Deceased and his comrades went to their work in the 154 stope at 8 a.m. They bored three holes and blasted them. Having spent half an hour at lunch, they returned to the pitch and commenced boring again, after having first shot a hole that had not torn on the previous day. The hole they were now boring was about 7 inches deep when deceased's comrade left him for a few minutes. The latter however had not got more than about 15 fathoms away before he heard an explosion, and on returning immediately found deceased with a large hole in his throat. He died in two or three minutes. The inference was that Tresidder, when his comrade left, must have put a borer or piece of iron into the bottom of the old hole, that had failed to tear properly, in which there was probably part of an unexploded dynamite cartridge and thus caused the explosion but there was no evidence given at the inquest proving that this was so.

TRESIDDER Joseph (non-fatal) - 1891 - 12/05/1891 – Age 18 – Miner. West Wheal Frances (metalliferous), West Wheal Frances Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. A rock from the side of the 140-fathom level, in which he was working, bruised his foot and ankle.

A large fire was found to have broken out just below the 264 fathom level, near the man engine shaft rendering the pumping engine unmanageable. The four shaftmen mentioned went underground with a view to ascertain what had occurred but several hours elapsed without any alteration in the working of the engine or the reappearance of the men and it was then feared that they had been suffocated by the volumes of smoke that were issuing from the shaft. Tom Eva, another shaftman gallantly volunteered to descend in the skip to search for the men if someone would accompany him. He found a ready helper and worthy comrade in John Rule and both these men were quickly on their way to the 80 plat, where it was believed the men were to be found. The rescuers had not been long gone when a signal was given to draw them to the surface with the almost lifeless body of Weeks. The two men again descended, this time accompanied by another miner named Williams, and shortly returned with Trevarthen who was not quite so much overpowered. The rescuers made a third descent and ultimately discovered Sowden and Wake in the 80 level, so weak and exhausted that they were unable to signal to stop the skip. Under the treatment of the mine doctor the men soon recovered however, and the fire was prevented from spreading to other parts of the mine, as it was feared at first, it might and subsequently be extinguished by the pouring of water down the shaft As it happened comparatively little damage was done but it was only by the narrowest chance that a serious disaster to the mine from a financial point of view was prevented. 4 injured.

TREVARTHEN Joseph (non-fatal) - 1891 - 01/01/1891 – Age 60 – Pitman. West Wheal Frances (metalliferous), West Wheal Frances Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall.
