PACKER Arthur - 1890 - 09/12/1890 – Age 22 – Drawer. Foxcote, Writhlington Huish and Foxcote Collieries Co., Radstock, Somerset. When he was about to enter the cage, at one of the landings in the shaft, it was moved by the engineman and he was so severely crushed that he died the same evening. The Coroner's jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against the engineman, but the magistrates dismissed the case when brought before them at the Kilmersdon Petty Sessions on the 30th December.

PACKING William - 1895 - 11/06/1895 – Age 58 – Collier. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiry made and inquest attended. While working at the coal face a small piece of coal fell on his knee, causing a slight injury, inflammation afterwards set in at the knee joint and he died on the 23rd instant.

PADDEN John - 1892 - 08/02/1892 – Age 27 – Shifter. Dinnington, John Bowes and Partners Ltd., Dinnington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Explosion of gunpowder.

PADON Thomas - 1896 - 24/01/1896 – Age 36 – Hewer. North Biddick, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Fall of a large stone from a slip when turning a place away.

PAGE Alfred (non-fatal) - 1892 - 21/01/1892 – Age 35 – Roadsman. Earnock, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. Crushed by machinery. 70 days off.

PAGE E. - 1895 - 15/03/1895 – Age 23 – Filler. Kiveton Park, Kiveton Park Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

PAGE G. - 1896 - 06/03/1896 – Age 13 – Driver. Staffordshire, Staffordshire Coal Co., Yorkshire. Run over by Corves when he was between them and his pony.

PAGET Joseph - 1898 - 22/02/1898 – Age 38 – Sinker. Kilton Ironstone, Walker Maynard and Co., N. Yorkshire. He was riding up the pumping shaft, in a loop, and when about 40 fathoms from the surface he was precipitated on to the scaffold about 40 fathoms from the surface. The spring hook came in contact with a permanent bunting, and was torn away and the loop was released.

PAGETT Frank - 1893 - 22/04/1893 – Age 26 – Collier. Ty Trist, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of coal and clod at the working face while engaged holing. The result of insufficient spragging.

PAINTER James - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 19 – Hitcher. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

PALFREYMAN H. - 1898 - 07/12/1898 – Age 31 – Collier. Ackton Hall, Ackton Hall Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

PALING Robert - 1898 - 07/02/1898 – Age 64 – Airwayman. Great Fenton Sutherland, Staffordshire Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Injured by fall of roof while repairing airway in Ash seam. He was preparing to set a post for protection while drawing a chock where the road was to be widened when the roof fell, 12 by 6 feet by 20 inches in the middle disclosing a slip. Died 16th Feb.

PALMER C. - 1890 - 08/02/1890 – Age 18 – Shunter. Park Hill, Victoria Coal Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Run over by waggons. Died 9th.

PALMER George - 1897 - 04/08/1897 – Age 33 – Labourer. Adderley Park Clay (quarry), Adderley Park Brick Co., Warwick. Deceased was on night duty and appears to have fallen from the top of the brick kiln he was attending to. Probably owing to darkness he missed his foothold.

PALMER James (non-fatal) - 1892 - 08/03/1892 – Labourer. Douglas No. 3, Merry and Cuninghame, Paisley, Lanarkshire. Caught by a full hutch in front of which he fell.

PALMER James - 1894 - 30/05/1894 – Age 22 – Trimmer. Cambrian Navigation No. 1, Thomas Riches and Co., Clydach Vale, Glamorgan. In attempting to jump from one waggon to another he fell under the waggon which passed over his legs severing both of them below the knees. Died 31st May.

PALMER Joseph - 1895 - 29/03/1895 – Age 14 - Pony driver. South Elswick, Elswick Coal Co. Ltd., South Elswick, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was crushed between a bunton and the descending cage of a small coal apparatus, where he had no right to be.

PALMER S. - 1892 - 05/08/1892 – Age 34 – Collier. Park Hill, Victoria Coal and Coke Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of stone.

PALMER Thomas - 1895 - 07/10/1895 – Age 20 – Loader. Pilsley No. 2, Pilsley Colliery Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Fall of side. He was passing between a tram and the coal face when a piece coal fell from the side.

PALMER William - 1893 - 13/05/1893 – Age 44 – Chargeman. Seaton Delaval, Seaton Delaval Coal Co., Seaton Delaval, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was working in a longwall gateway and foolishly went under the caunch, after the timber had been drawn, when the stone fell without warning from a loose end at one side and a back at the other. A shothole had been drilled and was ready for charging.

PARFIT James - 1893 - 12/07/1893 – Age 35 – Collier. Merthyr Navigation, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face while about to set a prop. The face had been standing a fortnight. Died from injuries received 26th July. Four feet seam.

PARFITT Frederick - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 41 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

PARFITT John - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 45 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

PARISH A. - 1891 - 31/12/1891 – Age 22 – Collier. Woolley, Woolley Coal Co. Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. 2 killed.

PARISH Aaron - 1894 - 28/06/1894 – Age 20 – Loader. Homer Hill, S Evers and Sons, Cradley, Worcestershire. Fall of clod under holing.

PARISH Edwin - 1899 - 17/04/1899 – Age 46 – Collier. Maritime, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While ascending the cage was caught in the byatt and they fell out. 2 killed.

PARISH Thomas - 1898 - 03/03/1898 – Age 50 – Deputy. Lumley, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. He, and another deputy, were going to draw the timber out of some back bords, he went first and when the other deputy went he could not find him, but on coming back he found him in a place end with a fall of stone upon him quite dead. He had no work to do in this place and why he went into it is not known.

PARK Alexander - 1898 - 02/02/1898 – Age 16 - Signal boy. Rubislaw, Granite Quarry, Rubislaw Granite Co. Ltd., Aberdeen. A stone weighing about 5 tons had been raised to the lip of the quarry, when the sling chain broke. The stone fell upon him and broke two of the timber guys, or side stays of a steam crane, which stood upon a ledge about 130 feet down causing it to topple over and fall a further distance of 60 feet. One of the broken guys struck the deceased and knocked him over the ledge.

PARK James (non-fatal) - 1890 - 24/11/1890 – Roadsman. Farm, Allan Farie, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. Ignition of compressed powder while breaking it down to fill a squib. 2 injured.

PARK James - 1896 - 25/03/1896 – Age 19 – Onsetter. Hodbarrow (metalliferous), Hodbarrow Mining Co. Ltd., Millom, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was pulling off the trucks from a double cage at the top when, in consequence, the banksman missing the kep at the pit top the cage lifted about 5 feet and fell back. The unexpected caused the deceased to slip and he was caught by the cage. Brakes were provided for the onsetter for the empty bogies but it appears to have been omitted. Their regular systems have now been enforced.

PARK John - 1892 - 11/01/1892 – Age 37 – Miner. Bellfield, William Barr and Sons, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof, 2.15 pm.

PARK Thomas - 1891 - 15/10/1891 – Age 51 - Iron ore miner. No. 5 Askam (metalliferous), Kennedy Bros., Askam, Lancashire. Deceased was engaged driving a limestone drift and after firing several shots he was cleaning his road up when a piece of rock fell from between two slips in the roof and struck him. Inspection made and inquest attended. 10.30. am.

PARKER A. - 1899 - 10/01/1899 – Age 36 – Collier. Rothwell Haigh, J and J Charlesworth, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Died 11th Jan.

PARKER Abraham - 1897 - 08/04/1897 – Age 30 – Hewer. Binchester, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd.,  Co.Durham. Killed by a fall of roof in his working place after a shot had been fired. The shot had been drilled into solid and displaced some timber.

PARKER Charles (injured) - 1891 - 02/02/1891 – Age 19 – Miner. Holehouse, Arley Cliviger Coal Co., Cliviger, Lancashire. Leg broken by coal falling when holing. Inspection and inquiry.

PARKER Francis (non-fatal) - 1890 - 03/07/1890 – Roadsman. Ellismuir No. 2, Provanhall Coal Co., Baillieston, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof while repairing a road.

PARKER Fred - 1894 - 14/08/1894 – Age 45 - Asst. timberman. Cymmer, Cymmer Colliery Co., Porth, Glamorgan. Fall of roof top coal and cliff (10 feet x 9 feet x 6.5 foot thick) at the face of a place, being driven through the gob, and which was not timbered within 9 foot of face. Four feet seam.

PARKER Henry - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Labourer. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

PARKER J. - 1897 - 15/02/1897 – Age 35 – Collier. Fryston, Fryston Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Died 17th Feb.

PARKER John - 1891 - 17/11/1891 – Age 60 – Stallman. Kilburne, Kilburne Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. The deceased was examining his working place before commencing work when a large quantity of roof fell upon him. 6.45 am.

PARKER W. - 1891 - 17/12/1891 – Age 14 – Driver. West Allerton, T and RW Bower, Leeds, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

PARKER W. - 1894 - 03/02/1894 – Age 50 – Collier. Wrye Hall, Rushforth and Wheatley, Bradford, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

PARKER W. - 1896 - 11/05/1896 – Age 43 – Labourer. Whitfield Chatterley, Whitfield Collieries Ltd., Staffordshire. Fell from pit bank on to railway, a distance of 12 feet, while lowering timber tram by steam crane. It was supposed that he was getting on to the tram to go down with it although this was forbidden. Died 14th May.

PARKER W. - 1898 - 30/09/1898 – Age 15 – Driver. Garforth, Garforth Coal Co., Yorkshire. Run over by corves. He may have slipped.

PARKES James - 1898 - 28/11/1898 - Age 26 - Pikeman. Coneygre, Earl of Dudley, Coneygre, Worcestershire. Fall from side of a coal pillar in a thick coal pit. 2 killed.

PARKES John - 1896 - 08/01/1896 – Age 55 – Pikeman. Coal Pool, John Hough and Son, Staffordshire. Fall of rubbish which displaced the timber.

PARKES Joseph - 1891 - 26/10/1891 – Age 40 – Drawer. Monkland, Calderbank Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of stone.

PARKES William - 1894 - 02/07/1894 – Age 72 – Oversman. Vauxhall, Vauxhall Colliery Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. While descending the steps from the pit bank he accidentally fell, when he was about four steps from the bottom and succumbed to injuries received on 8th. inst. There was a hand rail on one side of the steps but the doctor stated he had a touch of paralysis which might have affected him.

PARKIN Thomas - 1890 - 13/01/1890 – Age 25 – Onsetter. Storey Lodge, North Beechburn Coal Co., Evenwood,  Co.Durham. Severely crushed between tub and shaft side.

PARKIN Thomas - 1893 - 11/10/1893 – Age 36 – Onsetter. Castle Eden, Castle Eden Coal Co. Ltd., Castle Eden,  Co.Durham. Failing to sprag some tubs, which were running towards the shaft, he tried to stop them but was dragged into the cage hole and crushed to death.

PARKIN William - 1890 - 02/02/1890 – Age 16 – Driver. Butterknowle, Butterknowle Coal Co. Ltd., Cockfield,  Co.Durham. Thrown violently off a tub which got off the way while he was riding out-bye on it.

PARKIN W.H. - 1893 - 17/03/1893 – Age 20 – Miner. West Wheal Francis (metalliferous), West Wheal Francis Mine Adventurers, Illogan, Cornwall. Fall of ground from the hanging wall. The survivors alleged they tried it with a sledge a few minutes before.

PARKINSON George (injured) - 1894 - 26/02/1894 – Age 40 – Collier. Whitfield Chatterley, Whitfield Collieries Ltd., Tunstall Staffordshire. Fall of top coal and roof while drawing timber in waste in Cockshead Seam. Collar bone broken.

PARKINSON J. - 1897 - 19/10/1897 – Age 42 – Driver. Ringby (quarry), E Charnock, Yorkshire. He was driving a waggon with a 3 horse team on a cart road leading from the quarry when he fell and the waggon ran over him. Died next day.

PARKINSON James - 1894 - 05/11/1894 – Age 13 - Haulage boy. Pemberton, J Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire Inspection made and inquest attended. The boy was getting the haulage rope on to the drum to keep one lap from riding on another. He appears to have fallen forward on the moving rope and was carried rapidly between it and the drum and was crushed.

PARKINSON John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 20/09/1893 – Age 30 - Miner. Cornsilloch & Millburn, Archibald Russell, Lanarkshire. Explosion of gas, 41 days off.

PARKINSON Joseph - 1892 - 11/04/1892 – Age 66 – Collier. Denton, Denton Colliery Co. Ltd., Denton, Lancashire. Stone about 8 cwt fell from the roof on to him, while he was pulling coal from the face it came from a rank slip, not observed by deceased or by fireman when examining the place at 5.50 am. Accident 7 am.

PARKINSON Joseph - 1896 - 20/02/1896 – Age 22 – Drawer. Westleigh, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fell in cage from top to bottom of pit. Engineman started upwards instead of downwards. Disengaging hook fixed the cage but the safety catches which should have held the cage did not do so. 8 killed.

PARKINSON Richard - 1897 - 01/12/1897 – Age 14 - Haulage boy. Orrell, Orrell Colliery Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Four full tubs had been drawn up the brow by a tail rope attached to the far end of endless rope haulage to a flat shunt at the top of brow. Behind the last full tub a wooden sprag had been placed to prevent the tubs running back downbrow. This sprag gave way and the tubs ran down, crushing the deceased, who was following a journey of empty tubs going down. At the inquest the jurors stated that the company ought to have provided better appliances in the shunt for the purpose of preventing the tubs running back. Cause inadequate appliances.

PARKINSON Robert - 1891 - 10/09/1891 – Age 22 – Collier. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A shot was fired on the top of a small rise step and the gas fired immediately the fuse was lighted. The fireman told the Collier to light the fuse whilst he examined some 2 or 3 yards away having, he said, previously examined the face. There appears to have been some carelessness on the part of the shot lighter, he should have detected the presence of gas. Gas had been seen near this place a week or so previously. 2 killed. 11.0 am.

PARKINSON W. - 1896 - 09/12/1896 – Age 34 – Sinker. Calder, Mirfield Coal Co., Yorkshire. Crushed between pumps and the side of sinking shaft in which they were being lowered.

PARKS J. - 1893 - 17/03/1893 – Age 47 – Collier. Monckton Main, Monckton Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

PARLETT Walter - 1895 - 11/02/1895 – Age 29 – Labourer. Langwith, Sheepbridge Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Deceased was pushing at the buffer of a railway wagon when another wagon followed down the line and crushed him. Men are strictly forbidden to push at the buffer of a wagon. He died the next day.

PARLOUR Edward - 1894 - 06/11/1894 – Age 18 – Haulier. Gelli, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Ystrad, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on heading from edge of ripping, not timbered. While lifting a loaded tram on the rail, about 16 square feet of clift 2 feet 9 inches thick fell suddenly upon them killing them on the spot. Six feet seam. 2 killed.

PARNELL Samuel James - 1898 - 18/01/1898 – Age 15 - Collier boy. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, which appeared to have been fairly well timbered. Clod 4.5 feet x 2.5 feet x 6 inches thick fell. Four feet seam.

PARNSLEY William - 1899 - 13/11/1899 – Age 15 - Loco. fire boy. Kelton Iron Ore, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The youth incautiously leaned out in the brake van, and his head came in contact with a hurry or shoot erected in the pit siding.

PARR George - 1896 - 06/12/1896 – Age 63 – Fireman. Roughdales Clay (quarry), Roughdales Brick and Coal Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. He fell off the top of a brick kiln to the ground, a distance of 8 feet, when going round on the top to see the temperature of the fires. Fractured his skull.

PARR George jnr - 1890 - 26/03/1890 – Age 14 – Driver. Cottam, Renishaw Colliery Co., Eckington, Derbyshire. Crushed by loaded tubs. Supposed to have been removing something from in front of the tubs when the horse started and crushed him between the tubs and the side of the roadway.

PARR Thomas - 1896 - 05/12/1896 – Age 68 – Collier. Moss Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiry made. A stone fell injuring his thigh while he was engaged filling a tub. The deceased did not complain at the time and was able to walk home after finishing his shift. He died February 17th 1897, from pneumonia accelerated by the accident.

PARR Walter - 1895 - 02/07/1895 – Age 18 – Collier. Golborne, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Golborne, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased, with others was riding in a journey of empty tubs down a steep engine plane and was crushed to death through the tubs getting off the rails.

PARRY Charles - 1891 - 24/09/1891 – Age 51 – Labourer. Gilafch, Glamorgan Colliery Co. Ltd., Gilafch Goch, Bridgend, Glamorgan. Killed by the fall of a portion of wall of an old engine house being pulled down.

PARRY CM - 1897 - 29/05/1897 – Age 15 - Colliers boy. Cwm Bargoed, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face clod, from between two coals, 12.5 feet long inside of two props. Top coal seam.

PARRY David - 1893 - 11/08/1893 – Age 30 – Collier. Bettisfield, Bettisfield Colliery Co. Ltd., Bagillt, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was barring the coal down, when a portion fell against him fracturing his leg which had to be amputated. Died on the 14th inst.

PARRY David - 1895 - 08/01/1895 – Age 24 – Contractor. Parr, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was engaged driving a tunnel through goaf when part of the higher side gave way to a slip which had not previously been detected and fell crushing the deceased.

PARRY David W. - 1899 - 10/10/1899 – Age 13 - Collier boy. South Duffryn Hills, Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face coal and clod, 8 foot x 1 foot 9 inches x 35 inches thick, it fell from a false face slip on to the deceased who was sitting down. One sprag was crushed out. Bottom six feet seam.

PARRY E. - 1899 - 15/07/1899 – Age 36 – Collier. Simon Wood, Earl Fitzwilliam, Yorkshire. Fall of side.

PARRY Edward (injured) - 1892 - 20/08/1892 – Age 38 – Foreman. Hafotty (metalliferous). They had charged two holes with gelignite and were preparing to fire them. One fuse took fire sooner than they expected and they had to go away at once leaving, as they thought, the second fuse unignited on returning to set fire to the second hole, it went off as the fuse had taken fire originally without their being aware of it. Thomas was very badly cut on the right hand and Parry slightly cut and bruised. 2 injured. Nil days off.

PARRY Edward - 1893 - 09/01/1893 – Age 18 – Packer. Bold, Collins Green Colliery Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Whilst building a pack, along with his father, a stone fell from between two slips upon the deceased, they must have disturbed the roof by drawing props out.

PARRY George (non-fatal) - 1893 - 08/04/1893 – Age 22 – Miner. Phoenix United (metalliferous), Phoenix United Mines Co., Liskeard, Cornwall. Fall of ground (soft granite) from the back of the stope in which they worked. 3 injured.

PARRY Henry (injured) - 1891 02/07/1891 65 Rockman Maen Oferen (slate). A stone slid down a heap of rubbish where he was splitting a block of slate and struck him on the side. One rib broken and severe bruises. 10 weeks off.

PARRY Henry - 1896 - 08/10/1896 – Age 23 – Labourer. Ffaldau, Ffaldau Colliery Co., Glamorgan. Fall on heading where a previous fall had just been cleared. Two feet nine seam. Died 12th Oct.

PARRY Henry - 1899 - 22/03/1899 – Age 45 – Quarryman. Merthyr Vale Quarry, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fell from a ledge, to the bottom of quarry, a height of 100 feet. Ropes were kept at the quarry but were not used in this instance although owing to the great height it was necessary for safety that they should have been used.

PARRY John - 1890 - 16/09/1890 – Age 40 – Collier. Buckley, G Watkinson and Sons Ltd., Buckley, Flint. Inspection made. They were getting down top coal and propping under the new roof as they advanced when the new roof fell on the deceased.

PARRY John - 1890 - 27/02/1890 – Age 19 – Collier. Sirhowy No. 9, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Sirhowy, Monmouth. While he was engaged holing, a bell stone 5 feet in diameter fell upon his head and killed him. His props were too far asunder.

PARRY John - 1892 - 29/01/1892 – Age 60 - Rubbish tipper. Cambrian Navigation, Thomas Riches and Co., Clydach Vale, Glamorgan. Crushed between two trams on tip having neglected to sprag those behind.

PARRY John - 1895 - 11/10/1895 – Age 30 – Tipman. Dinorwic (quarry), GWD Assheaton Smith, Dinorwic, Carnarvon. He unnecessarily went in front of a train, of small quarry waggons, which were descending a slight gradient towards the tip at a speed of 8 or 4 miles an hour and attempted to adjust a chain attached to the front waggon, while walking backwards his foot was between two converging rails at the points, he fell and was run over. Killed on the spot.

PARRY John J. - 1899 - 03/10/1899 – Age 41 – Labourer. Alexandra Slate Quarry, Alexandra Slate Co., Carnarvon. A boiler was being drawn from a ledge in the pit by a stationary winding engine and the deceased, with two others, was stationed on the ledge with tackle to prevent the boiler from swinging and striking against the rock. Immediately it got off the ledge the men were overpowered and the deceased fell over the edge. Died the same evening.

PARRY John P. - 1898 - 24/09/1898 – Age 24 – Daywageman. Princess, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Haydock, Lancashire. Inquiry made. The deceased was sat down waiting for a hammer when a stone fell from the side of roadway injuring his back slightly. He died from inflammation of the brain accelerated by the accident at the Haydock Cottage Hospital. February 1st.

PARRY Robert - 1892 - 20/12/1892 – Age 64 – Byeman. Gwersyllt, Westminster and Brymbo Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was attempting to get a piece of coal end clod down with an iron bar, which was overhanging on the side of the roadway when he was caught before he could clear himself. He succumbed to the injures received January 19th 1893.

PARRY Robert - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 40 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

PARRY Robert (injured) - 1891 - 01/01/1891 – Age 24 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). He was tramming a block of slate 15 feet long which swayed a little and crushed his fingers against the sides of the level. 5 weeks off.

PARRY Rowland - 1895 - 22/02/1895 – Age 52 – Labourer. Cilgwyn (quarry), Cilgwyn Slate Co., Carnarvon. Stone fell from a place beyond his control and rolling down a rubbish heap struck him while he was loading a waggon. Died 26th Feb.

PARRY Thomas - 1898 - 16/11/1898 – Age 14 – Waggoner. Llysfaen Limestone Quarry, Raynes and Co., Carnarvon. He was playing with the waggons on a self-acting inclined plane, riding down on the full ones and jumping off when near the middle so as to ride up on the empty ones, he somehow fell under the full wagons and was killed.

PARRY William (injured) - 1892 - 14/09/1892 – Age 50 – Rockman. New Welsh Slate. His supporting chain broke as he was trying to remove a peg near the top of his bargain and he slid down the bottom and was badly shaken. 4 weeks off.

PARRY William (non-fatal) - 1893 - 19/10/1893 – Age 46 - Slate loader. Llechwedd (slate). Slipped against one of the rails while unhooking an empty waggon at the top of an incline, fell and broke the small bone (fibula) of his left leg. Still not resumed work March 1894.

PARRY William - 1891 - 17/02/1891 – Age 22 – Labourer. Abercrave, International Water & Sewage Purifaction Co. Ltd., Ystradgynlais, Brecon. Fall of roof (6 feet x 6 feet x 1 foot thick, cliff) on road. Repairers were about to renew a framing at a parting and had cut out the old timbers and taken down all the roof stone that appeared loose. Deceased was clearing away these stones when the fall occurred.

PARRY William - 1894 – 11/04/1894 – Age 71 – Collier. Hafod, Ruabon Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was walking along the engine plane around a curve when a journey of 20 empty tubs were coming to meet him and before he got in this manhole he was struck on the side and received such injuries that he succumbed on the 14th. There happened to have been a Compressed air hauling engine working there which would have hindered the old man hearing the journey.

PARRY William - 1899 - 18/06/1899 – Age 60 – Pumpman. Ynysfeio, Troedyrhiw Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Found drowned in 18 inches of water in the cage seat.

PARSON Edward - 1896 – 30/06/1896 – Age 39 – Rider. Fochriw No. 2, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Deceased was riding, contrary to regulations, between the tram on the engine plane and fell off, he was crushed between them and side wall.

PARSONAGE Timothy - 1897 - 05/08/1897 – Age 35 – Collier. Brynmally, Executors of T Clayton, Denbigh. Inspection made. A fall of roof occurred in a longwall face upon the deceased. The pack wall was within 4 feet of the face and propped in advance and it was stated that the deceased drove a prop from under the stone to get his tram rails down and he did not take the precaution of setting fresh props.

PARSONS H. - 1895 - 26/02/1895 – Age 64 – Dataller. Monckton Main, Monckton Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fell down and injured himself while pushing empty corf. Died 28th Mar.

PARSONS John - 1891 - 11/11/1891 – Age 30 – Collier. Meiros, Welsh Estate & Property Co. Ltd., Llantrissant, Glamorgan. Explosion firedamp. 3 killed.

PARSONS Richard - 1891 - 02/04/1891 – Age 13 - Horse driver. Apedale Sladderhill, Midland Coal Coke and Iron Co. Ltd., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion. 10 killed.

PARSONS Theodore - 1899 - 05/07/1899 – Age 27 – Labourer. Box Stone, Bath Stone Firms Ltd., Wiltshire. Crushed between railway waggon and loading stage, he having gone there to put down the brake. The waggons had been put in by the G.W.R. Co.'s engineman and shunter and Parsons intended to do a friendly action by putting down the brake, it not being his work to do so.

PARTERSON Andrew (non-fatal) - 1893 - 01/02/1893 – Age 31 – Miner. Drum, Bonnybridge Silica and Fireclay Co., Stirling. Fall of roof. 2 injured. 2 days off.

PARTINGTON Anthony - 1897 - 02/12/1897 – Age 39 – Collier. Ladyshore, John Fletcher, Lancashire. Fall of overhanging clod from working place. Broke over sprag. It would be far safer to work clod in advance of coal. The men ask an advance of six pence per ton to work in that manner. Died 17th January 1899.

PARTINGTON James - 1892 - 16/02/1892 – Age 63 – Engineman. Nook, Broad Oak Coal Co., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Crushed by cage at top of shaft. Although there was a banksman in attendance the deceased left his engine, went to the shaft, got into the cage to adjust the water barrel lever when, owing to the brake of the engine not being securely fastened the cage crept away and crushed him against the landing plates.

PARTINGTON John - 1895 - 09/12/1895 – Age 28 – Shunter. Yew Tree, Tyldesley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Crushed between chain and a waggon being draw along the railroad, the locomotive engine being on another line of rails. He attempted to unhook the chain from the waggon while in motion and on the wrong side of chain.

PARTINGTON Richard - 1891 - 20/02/1891 – Age 40 – Miner. Ladyshore, John Fletcher, Little Lever, Lancashire. Killed by roof from a fault where he was setting a prop. Inspection and inquiry.

PARTLOW Jacob - 1895 - 02/05/1895 – Age 13 – Horsedriver. Tibshelf No. 2, Babbington Coal Co., Derbyshire. He was found dead under the front of a loaded tram and appears to have been riding on the shaft iron when it became disconnected and threw him on the floor after which the tram crushed him.

PARTON or PAXTON J. - 1894 - 04/01/1894 – Age 21 – Corporal. Denaby Main, Denaby Main Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Strained himself, died 6th.

PARTON Thomas - 1896 - 12/03/1896 – Age 64 – Holer. Priors Lee, Woodhouse Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Fall of roof (coal and stone) near face of heading being driven alongside a fault in the double coal seam. There was also a fault immediately in front of which had not been observed before the fall.

PARTRIDGE Thomas - 1894 - 09/04/1894 – Age 15 - Pump attdnt. Whitwick No. 5, Whitwick Colliery Co., Coalville, Leicestershire. He was engaged to pump water with a small hand pump near where the hauling wheels are at work.
He was found crushed in the hauling wheels, and must have climbed over the fence which properly protected the machinery.

PASCOE Edward (injured) - 1890 - 13/11/1890 – Age 34 – Labourer. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath, Camborne, Cornwall. Pascoe was engaged on the surface floors and was struck in the eye by a bit of stone injuring the sight.

PASCOE James - 1893 - 17/01/1893 – Age 67 – Labourer. Foxhole, Foxhole Collieries Co., Llansamlet, Glamorgan. While he and others were unloading pit wood from trucks, standing on an incline with the brakes down and the wheels spragged, the upper truck moved forward and a temporary stage on which he was standing gave way and he fell amongst the wheels.

PASCOE John (injured) - 1890 - 17/12/1890 – Age 18 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. Climbing from a winze, by means of a chain, the lad slipped his hold and fell a distance of 8 fathoms. His injuries included a rupture of the bowels and bruises on his arms and legs.

PASCOE Josiah (non-fatal) - 1891 - 07/05/1891 – Age 15 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. While working in the bottom of the 185-fathom level a stone came down from an old stope above and struck him on the side of the head.

PASCOE Thomas C. (non-fatal) - 1892 - 18/07/1892 – Age 24 – Tunneller. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Fell away in a stope in the 170 fathom level while ascending the shaft (which he was employed sinking) having apparently become light headed. He had not been feeling well for some days previously.

PASS Matthew - 1895 - 26/06/1895 – Age 43 – Collier. Scot Lane, William Woods and Son, Lancashire. In working place alongside a fault from between two clips at right angles to fault slips ought to have been men. Fall 18 feet long 6 feet wide. Three props set along face might have prevented. 2 killed.

PASSMORE F.R. - 1897 - 12/05/1897 – Age 20 Labourer. Fremington Clay (quarry), CH Brannan, Devon. Fall of clay which they were working at and which was only 12 feet high and 10 feet wide at the face. The clay is hard, tough, and very heavy, not difficult to work, and is used for pottery purposes. I attended the inquest on Passmore who died in the County, but not the inquest on Stevens who died a day or two afterwards in the infirmary within the borough Coroner's jurisdiction. 2 killed.

PASSMORE James - 1897 - 09/04/1897 – Age 17 – Run rider. Bourn Moor, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. He was riding on the last tub of an empty set as it was going inbye on the engine plane when a large fall of roof took place and killed him.

PASTERFIELD J. - 1899 - 06/03/1899 - 45 – Quarrier. Thames Chalk Quarry, Gibbs and Co. Ltd., Essex. When crossing the tram rails, before wagons in motion, he slipped and was run over. Died 7th Mar.

PATCHETT William - 1899 - 14/12/1899 – Age 23 – Engineman. Clifton, Clifton Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased was found dead and badly mutilated under the crank of the fly wheel of an air compressing engine. He probably went through the fencing and was feeling if the bearings were hot when he slipped into the bed plate and was drawn under the revolving crank.

PATCHETT William Raynor - 1899 - 17/07/1899 – Age 23 - Asst. banksman. Cresswell, Bolsover Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Deceased got on the lower deck of the cage, for the purpose of cleaning it after the signal to lower had been given, and in trying to get off at the other side the cage it fatally crushed him between the cage and the pit bank timbers.

PATERSON Thomas - 1899 - 24/05/1899 – Age 38 – Fireman. Woodhall No. 1, Barr and Higgins, Lanarkshire. A blind pit was being pierced up a fault and was 15 yards high. Owing to inadequate ventilation gas had accumulated in the pit and deceased was attempting to clear it out. His safety lamp went out and he sent the miner working with him down the pit to relight it. The latter went back seven yards from the shaft, struck a match and ignited the gas getting himself injured while Paterson fell down the shaft. Two hours elapsed ere his body was got out.
