CADMAN William - 1896 - 05/11/1896 – Age 44 – Deputy. Holbrook, J and G Wells Ltd., Derby. Fall of roof. Deceased had fired a shot in the roof, of the roadway, and was examining the place previous to firing another shot in the same roadway when the roof fell and killed him.
CAFFERTY Daniel - 1896 - 31/12/1896 – Age 67 – Platelayer. Springside No.10. A Kenneth and Sons, Ayr. While jumping up on a bogie he fell off and the wheel passed over his leg.
CAFFERY Patrick - 1890 - 24/11/1890 – Age 16 – Driver. West Stanley, JH Burn, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Fracture of skull crushed between tub and a baulk of wood. Died following day.
CAIL John - 1894 - 14/12/1894 – Age 25 – Collier. Whitworth, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. While engaged wedging down some top coal, in his road near the face, it fell suddenly from some unseen slips and killed him.
CAIN Cornelius - 1892 - 09/09/1892 – Age 14 – Driver. Pegswood, Owners of Bentink and West Hartley Collieries, Pegswood, Northumberland. Inspection made. The deceased was found dead under the front tub. It is not known how the accident occurred but it is supposed that he fell on the limmers.

CAIN William H. 1894 - 13/07/1895 – Age 36 - Shaft sinker. Foxdale (metalliferous). Fall of bucket, kibble, which became detached from the spring hook (clevis) at the end of the winding rope.
CAININ Thomas - 1897 - 20/01/1897 – Age 23. Willington, Strakers and Love, Hewer, Co. Durham. Ruptured himself while hewing, died the following day.
CAINS Stephen - 1893 - 19/09/1893 – Age 63 – Collier. Kingswood Speedwell, Kingswood & Parkfield Collieries Co. Ltd., Bristol, Gloucester. The heading took weight and squeezed out the higher side timbers and pack (in steep measures). They came in suddenly and fastened him so that he could not escape. They were unable to extricate him for 12 hours when he was found to be dead.

CAIRNS Patrick - 1898 - 29/10/1898 – Age 16. Dauber, New Brancepeth Cochrane and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. He went into a hopper with three men to trim coal and was told not to go into the left side, where the thick coals were, but he went and at the same moment the slide underneath was opened to fill some tubs and drawn down by the rush of small coal and covered up. When extricated he was quite dead.

The deceased and his marrow were drawing timber out of an old headways and had safely got fifteen or sixteen yards drawn. At a point where a bord crossed the headways props and backs were set in a square with deals on the top and some lofting timber above as the roof was soft and bad and it was here where it is thought the deceased was easing a prop when the roof came in.

CALLACHIN Patrick - 1899 - 04/10/1899 – Age 42 – Labourer. Douglas, Coltness Iron Co. Ltd., Lanark. Deceased was engaged cutting out a seat, for a coal washing machine, when a fall of clay took place and fatally crushed him against a cart standing nearby.

CALLADINE John - 1898 - 27/04/1898 – Age 25 – Dayman. Alfreton Deep Hard Coal, Blackwell Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was engaged in fixing rails and setting timber in front of a coal holing machine, worked by compressed air, when a piece of roof fell and killed him.

CALLAN Sandy - 1897 - 10/05/1897. Snaefell Lead, Snaefell Lead Mining Co. Ltd., Isle of Man. On descending the shaft to go to their work on a Monday morning, they were overcome by carbonic oxide generated by an underground fire, of which they were wholly unaware. The timber in a level had taken fire accidentally, probably from a lighted candle end stuck up against it on the previous Saturday. 19 killed and 5 injured of whom 1 died 26th May.

In endless rope haulage brow said to have got crushed whilst lifting a tub on rails the rope running. Believe it to have happened whilst riding on tubs caught against air crossing 6 inches clearance above tub.

CALLENDER John - 1897 - 27/05/1897 – Age 14 – Miner. Oakbank, Oakbank Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased, who worked with his father, had just commenced his shift. He was "backening out" shale brought down by a shot fired on the previous day, when a large piece of midstone fell from the face causing injuries which terminated fatally on following day.
CALLIGAN Joseph - 1897 - 19/10/1897 – Age 26 – Miner. Ballochmyle Nos. 5 & 6, William Walker Hood, Ayr. While descending the shaft a fall of roof took place at the mouth of an air drift at the ground level and the falling stones crashed through the cage cover. The two deceased and another man fell out of the cage while a fourth who remained in the cage was injured. 2 killed.
CALLOW Robert (injured) - 1890 - 02/04/1890 – Age 45 – Miner. Laxey (metalliferous). Unexpected fall of stone from the side of his stope, 6 feet above him. Thigh broken. 48 weeks off.

CALOW Lavender - 1893 - 05/07/1893 – Age 38 – Engineman. Warsop, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Was unloading a sinking engine bed and died from syncope following a shock caused by quickly jumping away from the danger of being crushed by the engine falling from the truck.
CALWALADER Thomas - 1894 - 27/05/1894 – Age 39 – Contractor. Gidlow, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Standish, Lancashire. Inquiry made and inquest attended. The fireman and himself had been taking out a low bar on the main road a little time after a small stone fell from the place injuring his back. It was not thought serious at the time but the verdict at the inquiry was that he died from inflammation of the lungs accelerated by the blow.

CAMERON Adam - 1892 - 11/10/1892 – Age 25 – Brusher. Newton No.2, James Dunlop and Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Explosion of compressed powder while stemming a shot.
CAMERON Andrew - 1895 - 14/05/1895 – Age 29 – Hewer. Bedlington, A Bedlington Coal Co. Ltd., Bedlington, Northumberland. Inspection and inquest attended. A fall of stone occurred whilst he was at work and killed him. A case of these treacherous slips in the roof.
CAMERON Edward - 1897 - 03/09/1897 – Age 17 – Drawer. Broomhouse, Haughhead Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. While walking up the dook worked an endless rope, the rope broke and he was run over by a full hutch.
CAMERON Joseph - 1896 - 21/09/1896 – Age 68 – Hewer. Broughton Moor, Bertha Flimby & Broughton Moor Coal & Firebrick Co. Ltd., Broughton Moor, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was working in a 4-yards bord, the roof of which was bad and full of slips. A small trouble ran diagonally across the place from the right and there was a slip running along the right hand side of the place. In working out the coal he bared another slip at the face and the stone came away from these slips tapering off to a feather edge. One prop was canted out. An official was in about half an hour before and considered the place safe but it is doubtful considering the nature of the roof whether he should not have had another plank set. The nearest to the face was 6 feet away.

This boy lost his life through his own fault when attempting to move a railway waggon with which he had no right to interfere. By some means his leg got under the wheel, and he received injuries from which he died on the 4th inst.

CANDISS E. (injured) - 1894 - 17/09/1894 – Age 48 – Blacksmith. Madeley Court Halesfield, Madeley Court Co., Madeley, Shropshire. Balance weight fell through manhole of boiler in which he was working and broke his leg.

CANE Edward – 1897 – 27/07/1897 – Age 27 – Pumpman. Coed-y-moeth, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Crushed on the railway siding against the door of the weigh house by a waggon which came behind him. The arrangement was most unsatisfactory owing to the position of the door. The arrangement as to the position of the door however has been altered but the whole thing is too cramped and cannot even now be considered altogether satisfactory. In too many instances there is not sufficient space left between colliery sidings to provide proper safety between wagons and other more permanent obstacles in the way of pillars and walls.

Riding on a pony from his work to the pit bottom he caught his head against the roof and fatally injured himself. Died 18th March. Riding is strictly forbidden by the Special Rules. 4.30 pm.

Explosion of vertical boiler wetness of the fire-box, originally five sixteenths inches thick, reduced to nine thirty seconds inches, fit only for pressure of 17 lb. the pressure at the time may have been 65lbs.

CARLING Hugh – 1897 – 12/05/1897 – Age 21 – Hewer. Brancepeth, A Strakers and Love, Co. Durham. He was working in a place which holed into the goaf and a quantity of small stone fell from the roof covering him suffocating him.

CARLISLE William – 1893 – 15/11/1893 – Age 17 – Drawer. Alliance, Alliance Coal and Cannel Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The roof fell upon the deceased, near face of roadway, capping three bars which were set about 3 feet apart, the roof in that roadway being very broken with slips.
CARLTON R.W. – 1894 – 13/12/1894 – Age 14 – Screener. Washington, Washington Coal Co. Ltd., Washington, Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. In attempting to cross the railway, when some waggons were being shunted, he was run over.
CARLTON William – 1897 – 10/03/1897 – Age 42 – Hewer. Washington, Washington Coal Co. Ltd., Washington, Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. This man lost his life by a fall stone in the longwall face. It appears he had been reaching for a shovel at the face when a fall from slips caught him at the same time knocking out some props. Died April 28th.
CARLYLE William - 1898 - 18/01/1898 – Age 50 – Stallman. Wollaton, Wollaton Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof. A piece of the roof knocking a bar out and fatally injuring the deceased. He died 20th.
CARLYON Rockard (non-fatal) – 1893 – 07/03/1893 – Age 51 – Miner. Phoenix United (metalliferous), Phoenix United Mining Co., Linkinhorne, Cornwall. His comrade, in climbing up on the back of the lode to a tribute pitch, disturbed a stone which rolled down and struck his leg breaking it.

CARNE Richard (non-fatal) – 1892 – 10/06/1892 – Age 26 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mine Adventurers, Carn Brea, Cornwall. While engaged drilling a hole, which had reached a depth of 28 ins., an explosion occurred. It is thought to have been due to exudation from an unexploded cartridge of dynamite in the bottom of an adjacent old hole. 2 injured.
CARNEY Michael – 1896 – 28/05/1896 – Age 45 – Pusher on. Moss No.5, Pearson & Knowles Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attend. The deceased was hooking an empty tub at the bottom of a brow when a drawer accidentally let a tub run down the incline owing, he stated, to the rope to which it was attached coming loose crushing the deceased at the bottom of the brow.

CARR Hugh – 1899 – 18/03/1899 – Age 31 – Miner. Gartshore No.9, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Dumbarton. Apparently gas had lodged in a cavity caused by a fall and a further fall seems to have dislodged the gas which the air current carried to his naked light.
CARR James – 1893 – 14/04/1893 – Age 23 – Hewer. Walbottle, Walbottle Coal Co., Walbottle, Northumberland. Inquest attended. He was bending down kirving or picking stone dirt from the coal when a small piece of band fell on the back of his head forcing his mouth on to his knee which was cut and knocked two teeth out. He died on the 18th May from blood poisoning.

CARR John 1893 – 16/09/1893 – Age 18 – Incline boy. Pelton Fell, Lord Dunsaney and Partners, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Alleged to have received an accident by falling. A post-mortem examination showed that death was caused by exhaustion from typhoid ulcers of the intestines.

The deceased was working in a wide work face when a stone fell from the roof in line with face the place being propped to within 2ft. 6in. of face of coal. Died 11th. Dec.

CARTER Edward - 1896 - 14/11/1896 – Age 15 - Horse driver. Blackwell, B Blackwell Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Deceased appears to have been riding upon the crank of the shafts, when the cotter came out and the crank became detached from the shafts. He fell under the first tram of coal and was killed.
CARTER George - 1895 - 14/01/1895 – Age 40 – Collier. Audley, W Rigby and Co., Audley, Stafford. Irruption of water from old working. 77 killed.
CARTER James - 1895 - 06/02/1895 – Age 43 – Miner. Timsbury, Samborne Smith and Co., Timsbury, Somerset. A shot which proved to be over charged with powder ignited coal dust and thus caused an extensive explosion. The overcharge resulted from an unseen joint lessening the work which it was intended to do. 7 killed. Left a widow and 12 children, 10 of whom not of an age to follow any employment.
CARTER John - 1893 - 07/12/1893 – Age 29 – Collier. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased men were riding out in a gang of empty tubs, up a brow rising 1 in 7, when within 70 yards of the top the first drawbar broke and the tubs ran back about five yards, the trailer causing one of the rails to be displaced which penetrated through two of the tubs and injuring the two men afterwards succumbed to the injuries received. The men will not be allowed to ride on this engine plane in future. 2 killed.
CARTER John - 1897 - 30/04/1897 – Age 22 – Miner. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., N. Yorkshire. While holding a light for his mate who was barring down a piece of stone, another piece suddenly fell knocked him down and injured his leg and hand so severely that it became necessary to amputate both and he died the same day.
CARTER Richard - 1890 - 31/12/1890 – Age 26 – Miner. Wheal Grenville (metalliferous), Wheal Grenville Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. He was working on tribute below the 150 fathom level and having blasted two holes returned to the pitch. While examining the result of the shots a piece of the lode, about seven or eight tons, came away buried and killed him instantaneously. The manager a short while previously warned deceased to be careful of the part which came away. This accident was, by mistake, omitted from the list of fatal accidents in 1890.

Struck by a stone projected by a shot in an adjoining working place. The usual signal to fire was given but the deceased thought he was in position and did not move to his own working place.

CARTWRIGHT John - 1893 - 31/01/1893 – Age 52 – Collier. Nook, Broad Oak Coal Co., Ashton, Lancashire. They had just commenced to hole, in the mining’s above the seam of coal, when a great outburst of firedamp and small coal came from the minings from the face overpowered and buried them before they could get away. 3 killed.

CARTWRIGHT – William – 1899 – 09/06/1899 – Age 53 – Carpenter. Radford, Wollaton Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased was assisting to erect a headgear and while raising one of the iron caps, for the top of the woodwork, the hemp rope, used for the purpose, broke and caused deceased to fall from the top of the headgear to the ground.

The day fireman and furnaceman and another person were descending the shaft and cage stopped at the Rushy Park mouthing, for the day furnaceman to get out, when the deceased, who was at the mouthing, gave a signal to lower the cage and attempted, it is supposed, to enter the cage but failed to do so and fell 80 yards down the shaft.

CARVER John - 1898 - 04/02/1898 – Age 50 – Banksman. Sandycroft, Sandycroft Colliery Co., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased, it appears, had given the winding engineman a signal to wind up another tub of dirt but as the empty tub arriving from the tip he attempted to place the tub in the cage as the winding commenced when he was crushed by the cage descending and fell out at the landing gate below. He succumbed to the injuries the following day.
