RABBITS Frederick - 1893 - 20/07/1893 – Age 21 – Collier. South Wales No. 2, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Cwmtillery, Monmouth. A large fall of roof at the face. It came from a joint and a false bed above. He was working alone and it occurred at the end of the shift that he was not missed for two or three hours. He was found dead under the corner of the fall near the tram road.

RACE Thomas - 1891 - 24/05/1891 – Age 45 – Engineman. Haswell, Haswell Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co.Durham. Scalded to death by the bursting of the shut-off steam valve, while turning the steam on at the shaft after repairs to engine. 11.0 am.

RACEY Mark - 1893 - 26/12/1893 – Age 43 – Hewer. Hutton Henry, Hutton Henry Coal Co. Ltd., Wingate, Co.Durham. Sudden fall of stone while working in a broken jud. He met with a breaker which could not be seen.
RADAN Henry - 1898 - 23/12/1898 – Age 53 – Screener. Stanley, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was going down the waggon way whilst the set was running, and in passing on the inside of a curve (although told to go to the out side) he was caught by the rope and knocked under the waggon wheels.

RADCLIFF Charles - 1890 - 15/03/1890 – Age 27 – Haulier. Vochriw, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Crushed between loaded tram and shaft on which he was riding down heading dipping, 1.5 inches per yard, the horse having run away.
RADCLIFFE Richard - 1896 - 22/10/1896 – Age 55 – Quarryman. Old Deiabole Slate (quarry), Old Deiabole Slate Co., Cornwall. They went from their working place, some 200 or 300 yards away, out of curiosity, and were standing on a large area of ground, which by observation of the cracks it was known was on the move and from which the tools had been removed that morning. It suddenly fell away carrying them with it a depth of 40 feet. The cracks had been watched for several days previous to the accident and clearly showed, if reasonably considered, that the place was dangerous, although not treated so by the officials or men. 2 killed.

RADFORD Joseph - 1898 - 15/09/1898 – Age 35 – Hitcher. Cambrian No. 3, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. He pushed an empty tram forward into the open shaft at the Red Coal Landing and fell after it to the bottom.

RADFORD William - 1896 - 30/04/1896 – Age 56. Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.
RADFORD William - 1899 - 11/07/1899 – Age 49 – Shunter. Brereton, Earl of Shrewsbury, Staffordshire. On the Colliery branch railway. He was found lying in the 4 foot so badly injured that he could give no explanation and died 12th July.

RAE Robert - 1898 - 18/05/1898 – Age 30 – Manager. Birkrigg, Darngavil Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. The winding rope broke while deceased was ascending the shaft and he was precipitated to the bottom, a distance of 40 fathoms. The rope was made of steel and was 3.5 inches circumference, and had been in use since September 1894. The shaft is 67 fathoms deep and the rope broke 6 fathoms from the cage. Water constantly ran down the rope which caused internal corrosion. A series of tests were made with the broken ends of the rope and the average breaking strain was found to be 18 tons but the torsional strain was very little.

RAEY James - 1895 - 23/05/1895 – Age 56 – Deputy. Shire Moor, Shire Moor Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. A hewer fired a shot in the coal, to ranks a connexion with another place, with the result that the force of the explosion burst the coal down and killed a deputy who was at the other side. The deputy had previously told him that he would make a holing during the shift and to be careful. It was the hewer's duty to have ascertained that all was right before firing but the deputy was ill-advised in not informing the hewer he was going into the adjoining place.

When engaged in hewing he was warned by his marrow that way was uneasy. On attempting to come out he was buried under a large fall which came away from some slips and canted out several sets of timber.

RALPH Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 21/02/1890 – Age 35 – Miner. Cook’s Kitchen (metalliferous), Cook’s Kitchen, Camborne, Cornwall. Had his arm broken by falling against a barrow underground. He was climbing at the 234 level and through his foot slipping he fell backwards into the level a distance of about 2 feet 6 inches.

Deceased was working in widework and did not sufficiently sprag up the stone blind which separates the tipper and lower coals, so that it fell upon him and killed him. Had cut out a leg from under a collar, which he temporarily secured, as he thought about it however it fell on him, killing him instantly. A small quantity of stone also fell but not more than the weight of the timber which apparently caused his injuries.

He was crushed by runaway tub through an accidental failure of another boy to get a tub off an endless rope, which striking a pulley wheel caused the rope to jerk, the tub unhooked and ran down the brow and struck the deceased.

He was being raised up a small shaft, 32 feet deep, by means of a windless with one foot in a stopping when hearing the top he appeared to have lost his hold and he fell to the bottom. Killed instantly.

Waiting at the pit bottom to ascend and after the onsetter had signalled the cage away the deceased attempted to get on the cage. He was caught and crushed between the cage and the conductor stay.

RAY Joseph - 1896 - 17/10/1896 – Age 50 – Hewer. Walkmill, Moresby Coal Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inquest attended. He was caught by a fall of stone when working at the face. The deputy had left the place apparently quite safe 15 minutes before. He died on the 25th November.
RAY William - 1894 - 30/06/1894 – Age 27 - Trailer Winder. Gill (metalliferous), Winder Gill Iron Ore Co., Winder, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Fall down a staple pit. The front of this shaft was properly fenced but the back was quite unprotected. The trailers were, it transpired, accustomed to lunch here and in going round for this purpose the deceased skipped and fell down the pit.
RAYNER Henry - 1891 - 19/10/1891 – Age 36 – Dayman. Bankhouse Mountain, Oldham Middleton and Rochdale Coal Co. Ltd., Shaw, Lancashire. Killed by roof which he was dressing after a shot. Inspection and inquiry.
RAYNOR Suvion - 1890 – 20/10/1890 – Age 18 – Landing boy. Beechburn, Joseph Fryer, Crook, Co.Durham. Fall of stone in landing, which crushed his head against the top of a tub.
RAYSON John - 1892 – 22/11/1892 – Age 25 – Loader. Griff No. 4, Griff Colliery Co., Nuneaton, Warwick. Fall of roof. The "jig prop" at the top of a self acting incline had given way and knocked a second prop out. The deceased was engaged with the stallman when the roof fell.
REA Albert (injured) - 1894 – 25/07/1894 – Age 15 – Driver. Madeley Court, Madeley Court Co., Madeley, Shropshire. Arm broken by horse starting while he was replacing square on draught.
READ F.W. - 1894 07/12/1894 – Age 60 Collier. Brutcliffe, J Haigh, Leeds, Yorkshire. Fall of stone.
READ George - 1897 13/05/1897 – Age 17 – Horse driver. Hall End, Morris and Shaw Ltd., Warwick. Deceased was taking dirt into a stall and instead of stopping, as directed by the official, he attempted to lower, by hand from the tram down an inclined road. He was over powered, and being in front was crushed.
READ John - 1896 – 17/09/1896 – Age 39 – Collier. Lane End, Lane End Collieries Ltd., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were engaged clearing a fall and putting new bars up when a portion of the side gave way to a slip, capping the last bar they had set, killing the deceased and causing injuries to two other persons.
READ Robert - 1897 – 06/03/1897 – Age 54 – Sinker. Dover, Kent Collieries Corporation Ltd., Kent. Whilst engaged sinking a shaft water burst through the bottom. The hoppet was at the surface. The water rose rapidly only allowing six of the fourteen men in the shaft to escape. 8 killed.
READE William - 1897 – 08/06/1897 – Age 17 – Engineman. Conduit, Conduit Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Found dead between two horizontal hauling pulleys in a surface hauling engine house.
READER William - 1899 – 23/10/1899 – Age 13 – Collier’s boy. Llanhilleth, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of coal which burst off from a slip and a grimy back slip in his working place. The coal does not appear to have been overhanging thus proving that spragging is necessary in a thick seam even with a straight-up face.
READMAN Frank - 1897 – 07/05/1897 – Age 24 – Shifter. Dunston, J Bowes and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was pushing a stone kibble from a turn in the longwall workings and had just got through a canvas door when a stone fell out between slips and caught him in the back. The road had been examined as usual but nothing was seen here to indicate danger.

REAVELEY Charles - 1890 - 04/10/1890 – Age 53 – Deputy. Cowpen, Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Cowpen, Northumberland. Fall of stone. 2.30 pm.
REAY Jermiah - 1898 - 20/09/1898 – Age 58 – Hewer. Wearmouth, A Wearmouth Coal Co. Ltd., Wearmouth, Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased's marrow went out in search of the putter and on his return found that a large stone had fallen. Inflicting injuries on Reay from which he died on October 7th. The place had apparently been well timbered.
REAY John - 1890 - 11/10/1890 – Age 23 – Hewer. Elvet, Owners of Elvet Colliery, Durham, Co.Durham. Alleged internal sprain while pushing a tub in the pit. The doctor certified cause of death to be heart disease. Not comprised.
REAY Matthew - 1890 - 24/09/1890 – Age 13 – Driver. Tanfield Moor, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Tanfield Moor, Co.Durham. When leading a pony it turned round and hit him on the side of head. Died 6th Oct.
REDDIFORD Francis - 1890 - 16/09/1890 – Age 26 – Collier. Cwmdare, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by the explosion of a shot while unlawfully unramming the charge.
REDDING Alexander - 1891 - 22/09/1891 – Age 24 – Collier. Elphingstone, R and J Durie, Haddington. Fall of coal and blaes.
REDFERN Edward (injured) - 1892 - 03/02/1892 – Age 17 - Ore dresser. Halkyn (metalliferous). He had put some string around a revolving shaft, 7 feet above the ground, in order to play with it but it accidentally wound him up. Wrist dislocated and arm broken. 8 weeks off.
REDFERN John George - 1894 - 05/11/1894 – Age 46 - Pump engineman. Boythorpe, Boythorpe Colliery Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Whilst lying down resting in the pumping engine house he suddenly died from heart disease.
REDFERN Robert - 1890 - 22/07/1890 – Age 30 – Dayman. Broomstair, Great Dukinfield Coal and Cannel Co., Haughton, Lancashire. Killed by rock falling from the roof where the main engine brow was being widened.
REDHEAD William - 1893 - 03/11/1893 – Age 48 – Hewer. Brancepeth, Strakers and Love, Willington, Co.Durham. Broken leg by fall of top coal and jet. Leg amputated. Died on 13th.
REDMAN John (non-fatal) - 1891 - 24/10/1891 – Age 35 – Brusher. Kelty, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Fall of stone. 51 days off.
REDMAN T. - 1898 - 31/10/1898 – Age 38 – Quarryman. Great Mount Sandstone Quarry, J Greenwood and Son, Yorkshire. Fall of ground from place beyond his control.
REDMAN Thomas - 1893 - 07/09/1893 – Age 47 – Collier. Sirhowy No. 1, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Sirhowy, Monmouth. Fall of roof clod. It fell near the face from an unseen slips having been loosened by the vibration caused from wedging down some coal close to it.
REECE John - 1892 - 19/11/1892 – Age 26 – Drawer. Crop, St. Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased met with his death by main haulage rope breaking on engine brow, the journey running back down the brow crushing him, he was following the journey up to a shunt, if the trailer had been attached by the person in charge this accident might not have occurred.
REED Albert - 1897 - 27/05/1897 – Age 16 – Drawer. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co. Ltd., Leigh, Lancashire. Inquiry made and inquest attended. The deceased and another lad were taking two full tubs out along the level when another drawer, in bringing his tub down a brow at right angles to the level instead of stopping as he ought to have done on the flat at bottom of brow, ran his tub into the level crushing the deceased. He succumbed to the injuries received on June 2nd, 1897.
REED David - 1894 - 06/11/1894 – Age 19 – Haulier. Gelli, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Ystrad, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on heading from edge of ripping, not timbered. While lifting a loaded tram on the rail, about 16 square feet of clift 2 foot 9 inches thick fell suddenly upon them killing them on the spot. Six feet seam. 2 killed.
REED John - 1899 - 18/07/1899 – Age 24 - Coal cutter. Bourne Moor, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. He was fixing the cutter wheel on to the coal cutter when the compressed air was turned on, the valve to the engine had not been properly closed and the wheel revolved and caught his legs causing severe compound fracture. Died nine hours afterwards.
REED Thomas - 1891 - 26/12/1891 – Age 39 – Rolleywayman. Broompark, North Brancepeth Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Broken leg and other injuries by the cage coming down on to him while he was crossing the shaft in the cage hole, contrary to rules. Died on 29th instant. 8.40 am.
REED Walton - 1892 - 12/08/1892 – Age 24 – Miner. Groverake (metalliferous), Weardale Lead Mining Co., St. John’s Chapel, Co.Durham. While descending a shaft the cage halted and he, thinking it was at the bottom, got out and fell a distance of 12 feet, the cage after wards came down on to him.

REED William - 1897 - 12/08/1897 – Age 34 – Hewer. Shildon, Shildon Coal Co., Co.Durham. When hewing, a piece of coal flew out and cut his nose, erysipelas set in and he died on the 20th.
REEDER William - 1896 - 22/04/1896 – Age 64 – Miner. Eston Ironstone, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., North Yorkshire. While walking home on the tramway on the surface, he had been seized with a fit of dizziness and was leaning on an engine house window sill when a set of waggons passing caught him and killed him.
REES Ben - 1897 - 10/02/1897 – Age 37 – Haulier. Powell’s George, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Supposed to have been knocked off hook, on which he was riding, by the tail-rope while hauling rubbish from repairers.
REES Benjamin - 1896 - 23/02/1896 – Age 43 – Collier. Werfa, James Evens and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by runaway trams owing to rope not being attached.
REES Benjamin - 1898 - 09/04/1898 – Age 22 – Bratticeman. Naval Pandy, Naval Colliery Co. (1897) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fatally injured by head striking a beam which carried the tail rope while unlawfully riding.
REES Charles - 1899 - 17/02/1899 – Age 20 – Collier. Mardy No. 3 Lockets, Merthyr Collieries (1894) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face (road end) strong bastard fireclay 11 feet x 4 feet x 3 feet thick when drawing out a prop to get the roof down. Died 27th February. New seam.

REES David - 1891 – 25/07/1891 – Age 30 – Sinker. Cambrian Navigation, Thomas Riches and Co., Clydach Vale, Glamorgan. Fell down sinking shaft. Deceased, and the leader of the shift, were descending after shot firing on the bowk which ran in guides.
REES David - 1892 – 24/05/1892 – Age 38 – Hitcher. Griffin No. 3, John Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Balina, Monmouth. He fell out of the cage which was large and roomy while descending. He had come up only a few minutes before about some tools which had been sent out on a full tub. He was accustomed to riding up and down the shaft. There does not appear to have been any cause for his falling out as the engineman banksman and the man he had left in charge of the signals at the bottom stated that the machinery, cage, etc. were working smoothly.
REES David - 1895 – 06/05/1895 – Age 41 – Undermanager. Llanwit Red Ash, Llanwit Red Ash Coal Co., Llanwit, Glamorgan. While one of the owners was inspecting the workings the deceased, on a Mabon’s Monday when only a few labourers were at work, an explosion of firedamp occurred severely burning them both. Deceased died May 9th.
REES David - 1895 – 09/02/1895 – Age 55 – Collier. Morlais Vale, Morlais Vale Colliery Co. Glamorgan. Explosion of a small quantity of firedamp at the face of an exploring heading, the gas being ignited by the flame from a gunpowder shot fired in the coal. Safety lamps used. 2 killed.
REES David - 1898 – 15/08/1898 – Age 27 – Fireman. Llynfi Valley, Oliver Thomas, Glamorgan. A horse drawing a journey bolted and kicked the deceased on the head, throwing him down and the first tram ran over him.
REES David J. - 1890 – 29/11/1890 – Age 15 – Collier. Dowlais Bedlinog No. 2, Dowlais Iron Co., Gelligaer, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (clift-quarter, 20 feet x 4 feet x 6 inches thick) at face between Cogs and Coal. One prop discharged. Upper 4 foot Longwall. Francis had worked in a stall three years and according to the Colliery register, his age was 21. 2 killed.
REES Eden - 1899 – 07/04/1899 – Age 37 – Collier. Treaman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face cliff, 4 feet x 2 feet x 1 foot thick, from a slant running parallel to the coal. Died 16th December. Two feet nine seam.
REES Edward - 1892 – 07/04/1892 – Age 31 – Haulier. Plymouth Works, Abercanaid Hills, Plymouth Co. Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Struck by a piece of stone or coal falling from surface as the cage landed.
REES Edward - 1894 – 13/04/1894 – Age 27 – Master haulier. Park, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Treorky, Glamorgan. Killed by a lump of coal falling down the shaft, rebounding off the cage and striking him while he was waiting to ascend.
REES Edward - 1894 – 23/06/1894 – Age 18 – Door boy. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.
REES Edward - 1894 – 28/11/1894 – Age 26 – Sinker. Cambrian Navigation No. 3, Thomas Riches and Co., Clydach Vale, Glamorgan. While deceased and two others were fixing a stage in the shaft, at the five feet seam, he fell off the beam on which he was standing into the sump and was drowned. The water was only 9 foot deep and the top of it 4 foot below the stage.
REES Edward - 1896 – 31/07/1896 – Age 62 – Collier. Black Vein Drift, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Fall at face, clift roof, 3 foot x 2 foot x 3 inches thick, while resetting a prop knocked out by a shot in the coal.
REES Edward Henry - 1890 – 22/12/1890 – Age 17 – Stower. Abercwmboi, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (clod) between a break and a slip parallel to the face. The roof had been on work the previous night and some additional props had been put up, one of which was under the portion which fell. Yard seam, 5 foot thick, Longwall.
REES Frederick - 1890 – 14/07/1890 – Age 25 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. A bell stone fell from the roof near the face, it apparently was not previously visible. There was a prop with a lid under one edge of the bell.
REES Gabriel - 1895 – 08/09/1895 – Age 34 – Rider. Llwynypia No. 1, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side clift, 6 foot x 1 foot 10 inches x 1 foot, from the side of the road as he was passing.
REES George - 1890 - 18/01/890 – Age 42 – Repairer. Llwynpia, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Tonypandy, Glamorgan. While deceased, and another repairer, were removing two sheaves, in a tram on the engine plane, a journey struck him. They did not expect it was so near.

REES James Henry - 1893 – 31/01/1893 – Age 48 – Collier. Nook, Broad Oak Coal Co., Ashton, Lancashire. They had just commenced to hole in the mining’s, above the seam of coal, when a great outburst of firedamp and small coal came from the mining’s, from the face, which overpowered and buried them before they could get away. 3 killed.
REES Jenkin - 1892 – 26/08/1892 – Age 31 – Collier. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.
REES Jenkin - 1893 – 28/09/1893 – Age 35 – Repairer. Bryndu & Cefn, Bryndu Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Pyle, Glamorgan. By the breaking of a haulage rope while he was riding between trains, up the return slip. Slip 18 inches per yard.
REES John - 1892 – 02/09/1892 – Age 22 – Collier. Waen Llwyd, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. He was bringing a tram to the heading, for the haulier who having one off the rails in the heading, just opposite this stall, shouted to deceased to hold up and in his attempt to do so he slipped and got under the tram. He died on the 29th Sept.
