EADIE James (non-fatal) - 1891 - 15/10/1891 – Age 38 – Collier. Dysart, Earl of Rosslyn, Fife. Explosion of shot. Still off.

EADY John - 1897 - 01/07/1897 – Age 42 – Miner. Dolcoath Tin, Dolcoath Mine Ltd., Cornwall. Killed instantly by the explosion of compressed powder which he was forcing into a hole which was too small for the bobbin.

EAGLESTONE T. - 1897 - 31/07/1897 – Age 40 – Labourer. Harnorne Marl Quarry, WF Raybould, Staffordshire. Fall of marl from face which was undercut.

EALES Morgan - 1891 - 02/09/1891 – Age 22 – Collier. Naval, Naval Colliery Co. Ltd., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Killed on self acting incline while riding on loaded tram which had been sent away before the empty tram was attached at bottom.

EAMES John - 1892 - 20/02/1892 – Age 22 – Labourer. Cefn, J and W Wood, Kenfig Hill, Glamorgan. Crushed by boiler which was being removed from a truck on railway. 2 killed.

EARL William - 1897 – 23/10/1897 – Age 55 – Miner. Syke House Iron Ore, S and J Lindow, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was working amongst loose lumps of ore and stone in a large open place with a strong sandstone roof and the upper part of one of the lumps, at which he was working, suddenly slipped off from a parting not previously visible and rolling down struck Earl in passing.

EARLE Thomas F. (non-fatal) - 1893 - 14/10/1893 – Age 25 – Miner. Leven, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Fall of roof.

EARLY James (non-fatal) - 1891 - 23/03/1891 – Age 32 – Driver. Allanshaw, Allanshaw Coal Co., Lanarkshire. Crushed by tub.

EARLY John - 1891 - 09/07/1891 – Age 21 – Putter. Seaham, Marquess Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. This death was attributed to a blow on the head of which there was no evidence. Medical certificate death from natural causes.

EARLY Owen - 1895 - 05/06/1895 – Age 37 – Rolleywayman. Seaham, Marquis of Londonderry, Seaham, Co. Durham. He got entangled in the loose coils of a hauling engine rope and his leg was torn off. He bled to death.

EARNSHAW G. - 1896 - 05/02/1896 – Age 34 – Collier. Warren Vale, J and J Charlesworth, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Died 6th Feb.

EAST William - 1894 - 13/04/1894 – Age 31 – Collier. Dowlais Fochriw No. 1, Dowlais Iron Co., Fochriw, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (fairly good cliff) from two slips parallel to face and meeting 22 inches up. He had just worked up to the inside face slip stone 8 foot 6 inches x 3 foot 10 inches x 22 inches thick in middle. Ras Las seam.

EASTHAM Thoams - 1897 - 18/03/1897 – Age 37 – Banksman. Blainscough, Blainscough Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Crushed by a new cage being removed by weighing machine. The cage fell over upon him. Another workman had carelessly interfered with the cage, a high wind caused it to fall over. Died 19th Mar.

EASTHAM Thomas - 1891 - 09/07/1891 – Age 32 – Collier. Tawd Vale, Tawd Vale Colliery Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Deceased was lowered, with nine other men, to the New Arley mine mouthing in the shaft, and was not allowed time to get out of the cage safely before it was suddenly lowered, by the engineman, without any signal being given and the deceased fell a distance of 60 yards down the shaft. The engineman was very much to blame and had evidently not been attending to what he was doing. The jury said he was too old for his work. 5.45 am.

EASTON Alexander (non-fatal) - 1894 - 02/05/1894 – Age 18 – Miner. Woodend, Coltness Iron Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Jammed between tubs. 168 days off.

EASTON George (non-fatal) - 1892 - 24/05/1892 – Age 31 – Bottomer. Bathville, James Wood, Linlithgow. Bolt fell down shaft, 25 days off.

EATON Thomas (injured) - 1894 - 12/09/1894 – Age 20 – Waggoner. Bourne, Staffordshire Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Great Fenton, Staffordshire. Thumb crushed, while taking load through a door, by a piece of ironstone catching the door frame.

EAVES Robert - 1898 - 30/08/1898 – Age 21 - Lasher on. Billinge Lane, Winstanley Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A fall of side had taken place in the endless rope haulage downbrow, knocking out some props from under the girders, and when the two deceased, with others, had nearly completed removing the dirt that had fallen from the roof and side, a large stone gave way from the roof which fell upon them. 2 killed.

ECCLES William - 1899 - 02/05/1899 – Age 17 – Miner. Moorfield Bogside No. 1, J and M Craig Ltd., Ayrshire. Fall of roof at working face.

ECCLESHALL William - 1891 - 01/10/1891 – Age 56 – Bandsman. Muxton Bridge, Lilleshall Co., Donnington, Shropshire. Fall of roof coal while drawing a post in air way, near face, in the Double Coal. Died 2nd Oct.

ECKERSALL Edwin - 1896 - 30/03/1896 – Age 38 – Collier. Bridgewater, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place, from slip and joint, which ought to have been seen. Insufficient props, set two props in 55 square feet.

ECKERSLEY James Henry - 1891 - 19/08/1891 – Age 25 – Dayman. Bridgewater No. 1, Bridgewater Trustees, Worsley, Lancashire. Fatally injured by a thin scale of roof falling from the side of a slip where he was setting brattice. Died 28th. Inspection and inquest attended.

EDDIE Thomas (non-fatal) - 1891 - 26/10/1891 – Age 21 – Miner. Holmbush (metalliferous), Callington United Mines Ltd., Callington, Cornwall. Was working on a short ladder, in a rise winze which had just been communicated through, between the 145 and 120 fathom levels. The rat line with which he had suspended the ladder from the top gave way, and he with the ladder fell some fathoms to the bottom.

EDDY Henry - 1897 - 26/05/1897 – Age 17 - Asst. onsetter. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Strained himself, while pushing tubs, and died from strangulation of the bowels on the 30th inst.

EDDY Joseph - 1892 - 25/04/1892 – Age 52 – Collier. South Wales, Heyworth Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Cwmtillery, Monmouth. A scale of about 3 ins. thick suddenly burst from the rock roof upon him while working at the face, as this rock roof otherwise was very strong but occasionally did this, more timber was desirable in the working places.

EDDY Richard - 1899 - 16/12/1899 – Age 32 – Collier. Deep Duffryn, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at road, a fall of cliff occurred while knocking out timbers in a disused place.

EDDY William - 1893 - 10/01/1893 – Age 20 – Miner. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), Thomas Bolitho Sons and Others, St. Just, Cornwall. Irruption of water from Old Wheal Drea workings, which belong to the same mine. The plan, being inaccurate, misled the agent as regards the relative position of the workings. 20 killed.

EDEN David - 1897 - 20/12/1897 – Age 30 – Collier. Ashtons Green, Bromilow Foster and Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was bringing a tub of coal when a fall of roof occurred, opposite two road ends, capping three bars and burying the deceased. the roadway at that point ought to have been specially strengthened.

EDEN Peter - 1899 - 09/09/1899 – Age 57 – Hewer. Hebburn, C Wallsend & Hebburn Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was engaged in taking down the upper portion of the seam when a large mass of coal came away at a sooty parting knocking out a prop and fracturing his ribs. The deputy was present at the time but a previous examination had failed to disclose the presence of the back.

EDGAR James - 1898 - 09/05/1898 – Age 26 - Wagon shifter. Castlehill, Shotts Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Coal was being filled from a bing, and deceased was placing the loaded tub upon the winding cage at pit mouth, in order that they might be raised to the upper scaffold for screening purposes. Immediately after sending away the cage, with a loaded tub, he pushed another tub forward and fell with it to pit bottom, a distance of 30 fathoms. The shaft was fenced with a hinged gate which deceased neglected to close after placing the tub on the cage.

EDGAR Robert - 1899 - 25/09/1899 – Age 54 – Hewer. East Hedley Hope, Sir B Samuelson and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. While sitting hewing, a fall of stone occurred, in his place, causing serious injury to his spine. Died October 14th.

EDGE Israel (injured) - 1891 - 27/04/1891 – Age 33 – Drawer. Arley, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Atherton, Lancashire. Leg broken, he slipped on his way down the No. 4 gig-brow. Inspection and inquiry. Brow found right.

EDGE John - 1890 - 02/07/1890 – Age 45 – Miner. Newton No. 2, Trencherbone Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Clifton, Lancashire. Died November 7th from injuries, by filling only about two feet off the bottom coal, from which it appeared that paralysis ensued.

EDGELER John Lewis - 1898 - 02/03/1898 – Age 41 – Quarryman. Northfleet Chalk Quarry, London Portland Cement Co., Kent. While about to resume his work, of removing earth overlying the chalk, he fell down the face of the ledge and was killed on the spot.

EDGERLEY Adam (injured) - 1891 - 27/10/1891 – Age 68 – Waggoner. Blainscough Hall Siding, Blainscough Hall Colliery Co., Coppull, Lancashire. Leg injured. He fell in front of a railway waggon. Inspection and inquiry.

EDGINGTON James (rescued) - 1896 - 30/04/1896. Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.

EDMISTON James (non-fatal) - 1892 - 18/04/1892 – Age 19 – Collier. Southrigg, AM Graham, Lanarkshire. Fall of ice in shaft 42 days off.

EDMOND George (non-fatal) - 1890 - 15/01/1890 – Age 48 – Miner. Motherwell, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof, 83 days off.

EDMOND John (non-fatal) - 1894 - 18/05/1894 – Age 22 – Drawer. Prestongrange, Prestongrange Coal and Firebrick Co. Ltd., Haddington. Fall of coal.

EDMONDS Hugh - 1891 - 30/01/1891 – Age 45 – Sinker. Broadoak, Samuel Thomas, Loughor, Glamorgan. Deceased and three others were walling in a sinking pit and were shifting the stage up. They had got one half-moon into position and while sitting on the edge of this, with his legs overhanging adjusting the other halfmoon which was hung to the rope, he slipped off and fell 15 foot into water, 12 foot deep, and was drowned.

EDMUNDS Edward - 1892 - 21/03/1892 – Age 33 – Ripper. Tylacoch, Marquess of Bute, Treorky, Glamorgan. Fall of roof from between two known slips while wedging down a portion of the roof outside of the slips.

EDMUNDS Richard - 1893 - 11/04/1893 – Age 25 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an underground fire. 63 killed.

EDMUNDS Thomas - 1892 - 13/06/1892 – Age 25 – Haulier. Prince of Wales, United National Collieries Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. He, and two other hauliers, were taking their horses to the stable and had a short distance to travel on the engine plane, between two parts of the travelling road. The boy in charge of the signals, having left, they understood that the last journey had gone up but with their horses, on the engine plane, they heard the empty journey coming. Deceased apparently, in endeavouring to save his horse, was himself run over. The absence of the boy was due to a misunderstanding with the rider that he would not come down again.

EDMUNDS Thomas - 1893 - 28/02/1893 – Age 51 – Collier. Aberdare Works River Level, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fatally injured while illegally unramming a missed shot.

EDMUNDS Thomas - 1895 - 18/04/1895 – Age 56 – Collier. Plymouth Abercanaid Hills, Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by trams near pit bottom, where he was waiting to ascend the attendant having failed to detach the snap from the endless rope.

EDMUNDS William - 1893 - 11/04/1893 – Age 52 – Roadman. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an underground fire. 63 killed.

EDWARD Burke - 1892 - 14/07/1892 – Age 19 - Incline boy. Auckland Park, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Auckland, Co. Durham. While running a set of tubs, on an incline, they got off the way and drew out a baulk which fell on his head.

EDWARD John (injured) - 1890 - 16/04/1890 – Age 19 – Miner. Wrysgan (slate). A piece of the roof, of the level, fell upon his head. He had been told by the agent, half an hour before the accident, to take the piece down but had neglected to obey orders. 2 weeks off.

EDWARD William - 1893 - 29/11/1893 – Age 30 – Miner. Bwichglas (metalliferous), William Edward was pushing a cartridge of gelatine dynamite into a hole with a wooden rod when it exploded. The hole was 2 inches wide at the top to 1.5 inches wide at the bottom and the cartridges were seven eighths inch in diameter. There had been hard frosty weather about a week before the accident. Possibly he was using a somewhat hard cartridge. 1 killed, 2 injured.

EDWARDS Allen - 1897 - 22/09/1897 – Age 21 – Loader. Wynnstay, Wynnstay Collieries Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The contractor was wedging down the coal on the rise side of the level, when a piece four yards in length came off from a slip knocking two props out and crushing the deceased; Evans expired the day of the accident and Edwards died at the hospital the following day from the effects of the injuries received. 2 killed.

EDWARDS Caleb - 1894 - 17/02/1894 – Age 24 – Collier. Ffaldau, Ffaldau Collieries Co. Ltd., Pontycymmer, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (cliff 3 feet x 18 inches x 9 inches thick) on road at the edge of the rippings. Died 25th February. Nine feet seam.

EDWARDS Charles - 1896 - 08/09/1896 – Age 31 – Fireman. Adderley Green No. 8, Stirrup and Pye, Staffordshire. Fall of roof in level in Hard mine while he was pulling roof down.

EDWARDS Daniel - 1895 - 14/08/1895 – Age 65 - Road cleaner. Gelli Steam, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Run over by empty journey while cleaning the road.

EDWARDS David - 1893 - 06/01/1893 – Age 53 – Rockman. Braichgoch (slate). A block of slate slid down unexpectedly from the working face and the man hearing the noise ran away, unfortunately he happened to do so just where it was coming down, and he was struck and killed.

EDWARDS David - 1893 - 11/01/1893 – Age 20 – Rider. Squborwen, Samuel Thomas and Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Tram got off the rails and in jumping off the bridle he fell and was run over. Died 8th March.

EDWARDS E. - 1899 - 26/04/1899 – Age 31 – Collier. South Tunnel, Dowlais Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face cliff 5 foot x 23 inches x 5 foot thick while working away the coal. A big fall had occurred at the place some days previously. Top coal seam.

EDWARDS Edward - 1898 - 03/12/1898 – Age 54 – Labourer. Coed-y-glyn, Glyn Grantite Co. Ltd., Denbigh. While he was walking down the engine plane he trod on the wire rope and fell breaking a rib. Pleurisy and bronchitis set in and he died on the 13th. If he had not been a sickly man he would not have succumbed to what is usually considers slight injury.

EDWARDS Edward - 1898 - 19/04/1898 – Age 27 – Dataller. Whitwick No. 5, Whitwick Colliery Co., Leicester. A fire broke out on the main airway of the mine and developed so rapidly that only six men, including the deputy, out of a total of 41, who were at work beyond the fire, were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.

EDWARDS Ernest - 1898 - 13/08/1898 – Age 14 - Horse driver. Barlborough, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Derbyshire. He was driving a horse, down a roadway, when the horse took the wrong turn pulling the first tub off the rails and crushing deceased. He died the same day.

EDWARDS Esau - 1898 - 09/09/1898 – Age 69 – Bottomer. East Balquhatstone, John Nimmo and Son Ltd., Stirling. One side of the shaft is used from the Lady Grange seam to the Splint Coal a distance of 24 fathoms for passing down in the cage to attend to a pump. The shaft is then opened at the Lady Grange by raising two doors. Deceased was engaged closing these doors after the overman had ascended from the Splint Coal and in some unexplained manner he fell to the Splint Coal.

EDWARDS Evan - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 19 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

EDWARDS Evan - 1896 - 30/01/1896 – Age 43 – Ripper. Nixon’s Merthyr Vale, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., (and reduced), Glamorgan. Fall at face of a stone drift.

EDWARDS Frank - 1896 - 30/04/1896 – Age 35. Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.

EDWARDS G. - 1897 - 08/05/1897 – Age 33 – Cager. Walsall Wood, Walsall Wood Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Injured by descending cage. Died 31st May.

EDWARDS George - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 42 – Roadman. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

EDWARDS Henry (non-fatal) - 1894 - 02/05/1894 – Age 23 – Brusher. Binniehill & Lodge, John Watson Ltd., Stirling. Explosion of gunpowder 14 days off.

EDWARDS Henry - 1891 - 24/09/1891 – Age 49 – Shunter. Blaensychan, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. As he was engaged lowering a railway truck, to the screens for loading, he went to use the break handle which was on the pit bank or retaining wall side and where there was not proper space for a man to stand between the truck and the pit bank. While putting on the break he appears to have slipped and fallen, he was crushed against the retaining wall and thrown in front of the trucks and was then run over.

EDWARDS Henry?? - 1892 - 14/12/1892 – Age 49 – Collier. Bamfurlong Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Underground fire. (James Towey died on the 15th Dec). 16 killed.

EDWARDS Hugh - 1896 - 19/10/1896 – Age 41 - Asst. repairer. Pentre, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed against a collar while riding upon a full tram drawn by a horse. Died 2nd November.

EDWARDS J. - 1894 - 23/04/1894 – Age 60 – Stallman. Kiveton Park, Kiveton Park Steel Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

EDWARDS J.B. - 1895 - 04/02/1895 – Age 13 - Taker-off. Central, Central Staffordshire. Crushed by tub running loose down jig. He had neglected to hook empty tub to rope.

EDWARDS J.M. - 1898 - 02/07/1898 – Age 24 – Labourer. Onllwyn, Griffith Thomas, Glamorgan. He had been sent to a certain place for stone tools and on returning appeared to have missed his road and strayed into an abandoned heading where he was found suffocated. He had passed a brattice sheet, closed at the bottom, two sets of cross-timbers (danger marks) and travelled over several yards of fallen roadway.

EDWARDS James - 1891 - 21/09/1891 – Age 49 – Collier. Cyfartha, Castle Crawshay Bros. Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Fall of top-coal (about 6 feet x 5 feet x 25 inches thick) stood as roof between roadside props, 8 foot apart, close to face. Deceased had been told to prop the middle but had not done so. 9 foot seam. Long wall.

EDWARDS James - 1893 - 08/04/1893 – Collier. Fernhill, Fernhill Merthyr Colliery Co., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face while setting a prop. Died 16th March. Two-feet-nine seam.

EDWARDS James - 1893 - 28/06/1893 – Age 66 – Labourer. Camerton, Miss AN Jarrett, Camerton, Somerset. On the surface. When helping a tram, he stepped to a small wall at the side, and slipping fell about 9 feet to the ground which resulted in his death.

EDWARDS James - 1896 - 27/01/1896 – Age 35 – Collier. Ferndale Nos 7 & 8, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 57 killed.

EDWARDS James - 1898 - 08/10/1898 – Age 28 – Collier. Nixons Deep Duffryn, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face clift from smooth slip trough shape inside of props and close to Coal where a shot had been fired. Two feet nine seam.

EDWARDS John (injured) - 1892 - 05/02/1892 – Age 39 – Miner. Cwmystwyth (metalliferous). Accidentally set fire to the powder in his canister by a spark from his candle. He had omitted to put the top on the canister while he was on carrying it.

EDWARDS John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 18/04/1893 – Age 30 – Miner. Halkyn (metalliferous). Explosion of a detonator while inserting the fuse, his eyes injured severely. 8 weeks off.

EDWARDS John - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 20 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp, at naked lights, in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

EDWARDS John - 1890 - 14/11/1890 – Age 44 – Fireman. Brynkinalt, Brynkinalt Collieries Ltd., Chirk, Flint. Inspection made end inquest attended. He was going round the workings and appears to have gone, a short distance, into the waste to examine, when a stone fell out from two slips and from between the props.

EDWARDS John - 1890 - 30/09/1890 – Age 33 – Hitcher. Llwynpia, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Tonypandy Glamorgan. Struck by a piece of coal which fell down the shaft while he was drawing an empty tram from cage.

EDWARDS John - 1891 – 22/08/1891 – Age 40 – Pitman. Penrhiwfer, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Penygraig, Glamorgan. While deceased, and another pitman, were repairing the sides of the shaft above the 3 foot landing, a fall of side occurred and knocked them off the cage, broke the staging, and deceased fell through the opening that was made. The sides fell in below and the shaft became so dangerous that it had to be filled up re-sunk and timbered before his body could be recovered.

EDWARDS John - 1891 - 23/03/1891 – Age 59 – Repairer. Dinas Steam, Dinas Steam Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Buried by a fall of stone (cliff) from the side of a return airway where he and another repairer had gone to level down some falls.

EDWARDS John - 1891 - 29/08/1891 – Age 35 – Sinker. Llwynypia No. 2 Sinking, Glamorgan Coal Co., Llwynypia, Glamorgan. While engaged in putting timbering in the shaft he slipped and fell 12 foot. Died 9th September.

EDWARDS John - 1893 - 01/02/1893 – Age 40 – Repairer. Padeswood, Padeswood Cannel and Coal Co. Ltd., Mold, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The roof fell where they were working the pillars back which liberated a quantity of sand and gravel which was about 16 yards above the cannel seam suffocating the deceased through roadway being completely filled. Abandoned that district for safety the cover being absent 35 yards. 2 killed.

EDWARDS John - 1893 - 10/01/1893 – Age 37 – Miner. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), Thomas Bolitho Sons and Others, St. Just, Cornwall. Irruption of water from Old Wheal Drea, workings which belong to the same mine. The plan being inaccurate misled the agent as regards the relative position of the workings. 20 killed.

EDWARDS John - 1893 - 18/07/1893 – Age 48 – Hewer. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron Co. Ltd., Spennymoor, Co. Durham. Severe injury to back by fall of stone. Died on the 21st inst.

EDWARDS John - 1896 - 10/04/1896 – Age 21 – Collier. Ebbw Vale Marine, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Whilst getting coal in the face of the stall a large stone, in from the roof, fell on him and he died on his way home.

EDWARDS John - 1896 - 30/05/1896 – Age 36 - On sitter. Vauxhall, Vauxhall Colliery Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was removing prop wood, from the cage at the mouthing near the pit bottom, when the winding engine started. The engine man had placed an iron pin to secure the steam handle but he had not lowered it sufficiently through the hole as it came out accidentally. By the cage moving upwards deceased fell out fracturing has spine. Died June 11th.

EDWARDS John - 1898 - 13/06/1898 – Age 44 – Roadsman. Coleorton, Coleorton Colliery Co., Leicester. A set of 4 full tubs broke away from the endless rope, going up an incline, and running back struck deceased who was working in the roadway. He died next day.

EDWARDS Joseph - 1893 - 10/02/1893 – Age 46 – Ripper. Cyfartha Cwm, Crawshay Bros. Ltd., Merthyr, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road while resting under a portion of roof, which he and his partner had been trying to blast down. Lower two feet nine seam.

EDWARDS Josiah (injured) - 1890 - 09/05/1890 – Age 23 – Miner. Minera (metalliferous). One of the springs of the piston of a rock drill broke, Edwards thoughtlessly put his finger into the exhaust port and had the tip of it taken off by the movement of the piston. Six and a half weeks off.

EDWARDS Lewis (non-fatal) - 1891 - 21/11/1891 – Bottomer. Blackhill No. 9, Summerlee and Mossend Iron & Steel Co., Maryhill, Lanarkshire. Hand caught between sprag of hutch and a prop.

EDWARDS M. - 1898 - 24/02/1898 – Age 46 – Dataller. Denaby Main, Denaby and Cadeby Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Run over by corves on inclined plane.

EDWARDS Morgan - 1893 - 24/02/1893 – Age 40 – Repairer. Dowlais Fochriw, Dowlais Iron Co., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (7 feet x 4 feet x 10 inches thick) while reopening an old heading. Raslas seam.

EDWARDS Morgan - 1899 - 14/12/1899 – Age 70 – Doorkeeper. Lower Varteg, Lower Varteg Colliery Co., Monmouth. Run over by a journey of trams, while returning to his door from a parting, about fifty yards distant. The placing of ventilating doors upon engine or self-acting planes is a very objectionable practice and is the result of want of foresight. In this case it existed before the present owners took over the colliery.

EDWARDS Nathaniel - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 19 – Haulier. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

EDWARDS Peter (injured) - 1891 - 18/04/1891 – Age 27 – Miner. Oakeley (slate). Hughes was charging a crack with powder in order to break through a thin barrier of rock, Edward being on the other side it is supposed that a spark from Edward’s candle accidentally lit some of the powder, which had found its way through the crack, to his side barrier. 2 injured. Three and a half weeks off.

EDWARDS Phillip - 1891 - 09/09/1891 – Age 35 – Labourer. International, International Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Garw Valley, Glamorgan. Crushed by cage descending upon him while attempting to cross the shaft bottom.

EDWARDS Richard (non-fatal) - 1893 - 19/10/1893 – Age 36 – Rockman. Llechwedd (slate). Fall of a big block of slate from the working face. He had fired a hole in order to bring down the block but as it did not come away at once he climbed up and he said he would recharge the hole. At this moment the block fell and struck him. His partner had begged him to wait as is usual, before going up the face.

EDWARDS Richard - 1890 - 03/04/1890 – Age 26 – Shaftsman. North Hendre (metalliferous). He and his partners were preparing four shots in a crosscut and had set light to them. He got into the bucket with his partners and signalled to be drawn up out of the way of the blast. For some unknown reason he jumped out of the bucket and said he would get under some timber in the shaft, in spite of the entreaties of his companions to get into the bucket he persisted in crouching under the timber. His companions were obliged to ascend for fear of being blown to pieces as the fuse had taken fire and they heard him fall into the water at the bottom of the shaft after the last shot had gone off.

EDWARDS Richard - 1890 - 18/01/1890 – Age 59 – Labourer. Ynishir, Ynishir Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Run over by trams on engine drift while coming out from his work.

EDWARDS Richard - 1898 - 01/07/1898 – Age 33 – Labourer. Maes-y-gamfa Slate Quarry, Fred Walton and EH Davies, Merioneth. While he was raising a small stone, with a crane, he let go the handle and was struck by it on the nose. Died three days later. The crane was supplied with an efficient pawl and a brake but the deceased had shifted the former and had neglected to put it back.

EDWARDS Richard - 1899 - 30/03/1899 – Age 50 – Timberman. East Halkyn Lead, East Halkyn Mining Co. Ltd., Flint. While he was repairing an inclined shaft he somehow fell to the bottom a distance of 25 yards. Killed on the spot.

EDWARDS Robert - 1890 - 10/01/1890 – Age 37 – Miner. Spa (ironstone), Gjers Mills and Co., Guisborough,  Yorkshire. A piece of stone fell, knocking out a prop, which struck him on the head.

EDWARDS Roberts Rowland - 1898 - 17/11/1898 – Age 34 - Slate getter. Oakley Slate, Oakeley Slate Quarries Co. Ltd., Merioneth. While he was working in a stope terrace (floor) suspended in the face, he disturbed the rubbish on which rested a block of stone about 15 cwt., the block slid and cut his rope and so caused a fall of a distance of 6 yards. Killed on the spot.

EDWARDS Stephens - 1896 - 13/11/1896 – Age 48 – Loader. Holly Bank, Holly Bank Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Died 15th Nov. Fall of roof in stow head.

EDWARDS Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 10/12/1890 – Age 25 – Labourer. East Darren (metalliferous). A man who was striking a piece of timber, with a sledge, missed his blow and hit Edwards on the top of the forefinger of the left hand, finger broken. 11 weeks off.

EDWARDS Thomas - 1890 - 14/11/1890 – Age 63 – Labourer. Aberdare Merthyr, Aberdare Merthyr, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (shale and coal 7 foot x 5.5 foot) where it was double timbered and lagged. Smothered by the small stuff which ran through the timbers. 6 foot seam.

EDWARDS Thomas - 1891 - 01/04/1891 – Age 61 - Pump attdnt. Dinas Main, Dinas Main Colliery Co., Bridgend, Glamorgan. Knocked down by a full journey of trams on engine plane as he was travelling out towards the shaft.

EDWARDS Thomas - 1892 - 06/07/1892 – Age 52 – Collier. White Rose Level, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., New Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of roof at the face while holing. The stone fell from invisible slips. Being a strong roof generally the place was not as closely and regularly secured as it probably otherwise would have been. The manager promised in future that supports should be insisted upon at closer and more regular distances.

EDWARDS Thomas - 1892 - 18/10/1892 – Age 24 – Collier. Harris’ Navigation, Deep Navigation Collieries Ltd., Treharris, Glamorgan. Fell out of cage while ascending rope was unsheathed by a small cap being carried on to pulley.

EDWARDS Thomas - 1894 - 21/03/1894 – Age 39 – Miner. Hassockrigg, Coltness Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

EDWARDS Thomas - 1897 - 26/10/1897 – Age 39 – Timberman. South Duffryn No. 2 Hills, Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road, clift 9 feet x 5.5 foot x from 3 foot to 4 foot thick, breaking two pairs of timbers at edge of a previous fall about to be repaired. Nine feet seam.

EDWARDS Thomas - 1899 - 28/01/1899 – Age 49 – Collier. Westminster, Westminster Brymbo Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased attempted to cross between the journey of ten full wagons when they were standing, for more pressure of Compressed air, when the journey suddenly started on and the deceased got crushed between the wagons and some props.

EDWARDS Thomas Rees - 1895 - 08/05/1895 – Age 14 - Collier’s boy. Penycraig, Penycraig Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face in No. 2 Rhondda Seam, clift 3.5 feet x 9 inches x 12  inches thick in middle, from between two slants meeting at top, ripped to face that morning but left unsupported at end over coal.

EDWARDS Walter - 1895 - 26/02/1895 – Age 22 – Labourer. Plymouth-Abercanaid Hills, Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road in two feet nine seam. While clearing a small fall a second fall occurred. Roof ballasted rock supported by side props only.

EDWARDS William (non-fatal) - 1892 - 13/10/1892 – Age 17 – Miner. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mine Adventurers, St. Just, Cornwall. He slipped on the steps which lead over the cliff to the mouth of Wheal Cock shaft and cut his head.

EDWARDS William - 1891 - 13/05/1891 – Age 38 – Collier. Brithdir Main Colliery Co. Ltd., Neath, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp on entering his working place in the morning with a naked light as well as a safety lamp.

EDWARDS William - 1895 - 14/10/1895 - Age 45 – Collier. Penrhiwfer, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Found dead under a fall of roof, 6 foot x 4 foot x 7 inches thick, in his working place in a level in No. 2 Rhondda Seam. Not propped under stone which fell. Deceased worked alone that day.

EDWARDS William - 1896 - 13/01/1896 – Age 28 – Rider. Ferndale No. 4, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed between trams on rubbish incline, the rope having broken while deceased and another man were getting trams on the rails by the aid of engine and rope.

EDWARDS William - 1897 - 05/08/1897 – Age 48 - Loco. Shunter. Snailbeach Lead, Snailbeach Lead Mining Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Run over by, and crushed under a low flat waggon pushed by locomotive. He fell off in front of the waggon while stooping to lift Coupling chain. Died 15th August.

EDWARDS William - 1898 - 05/11/1898 – Age 38 – Pitman. Nixons Navigation, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fell from four feet landing while he, and others, were swinging a cradle-stage into the shaft on the upcast side of the brattice.

EDWARDS William - 1898 - 28/12/1898 – Age 26 – Rider. International, International Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side while filling loose coal, off main road, he attacked the pillar on the side where the clift above it (4 feet x 15 inches x 15 inches) fell upon him. Six feet seam.

EDWARDS William David - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 19 – Haulier. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion, 290 killed.

EDWARDS Zachariah - 1895 - 10/02/1895 – Age 30 – Pumpman. Duffryn Rhymney, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Rhymney, Glamorgan. Deceased had given the signal to be drawn up from the pump lodge but upon the cage reaching the top he was missing and a search being made his body was found at the bottom of the shaft down which he had fallen.

EDWARDSON Ezekel - 1897 - 03/08/1897 – Age 16 – Drawer. Edge Green, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The boy fell in the sump, between the cage bearers, which were about 14 inches apart and he was drowned in the water below. He appears to have thought the cage was at the mouthing. At the inquiry the jury suggested closer over to the sump.

EDWIN Walter - 1897 - 09/09/1897 – Age 15 - Horse driver. Riddings, Silkstone James Oakes and Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased and another driver were taking their horses to the stables and whilst passing along the roadway the deceased endeavoured to pass the horse in front of him when the horse kicked him on the forehead. He died on the 19th October.

EELEY John - 1896 - 17/08/1896 – Age 47 – Collier. Clough Hall No. 18, Birchenwood Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of coal from a slip at working face in a heading in 7 foot Banbury Seam. The coal reeled out a sprag in falling.

EGERTON Samuel - 1895 - 24/09/1895 – Age 35 – Stallman. Walsall Wood, Walsall Wood Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Fall of roof rock in working face. Died Oct.

ELAND Joseph - 1890 - 12/04/1890 – Age 56 – Deputy. Brayton Domain, Joseph Harris, Cumberland. Killed by large fall of roof while engaged drawing out a chock. 12.0 noon.

ELDER James - 1892 - 09/05/1892 – Age 20 – Miner. Little Raith, Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Fall of roof.

ELDER William - 1892 - 26/01/1892 – Age 40 – Miner. Cults (Metalliferous), James Martin, Fife. Fall of limestone.

ELEY Evan - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Age 37 – Collier. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

ELEY Samuel - 1899 - 19/04/1899 – Age 33 – Stallman. Cadley Hill, Halls Collieries Ltd., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was examining the roof of his working place when a quantity of stone fell and killed him. Deceased knew the stone was unsafe.

ELIAS Evan M. - 1897 - 31/03/1897 – Age 19 – Collier. South Rhondda, South Rhondda Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by runaway trams, an iron sleeper placed against the last one to hold them after the rope was detached having failed to do so and the trams ran down to the face of a dip.

ELIAS John - 1899 - 20/03/1899 – Age 38 – Collier. Graig, Waynes Merthyr Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck by a stone 182 lbs. weight which fell from the unwalled sides of the shaft through the cage Cover on to the deceased who was ascending, with another man. The shaft is 249 yards deep of which 68 yards is unwalled.

ELIAS Roger - 1893 - 25/08/1893 – Age 18 – Collier. Nant Merthyr, David Thomas, Crynant, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road while turning a tram at a parting for the haulier to pass out with full tram. Road not double timbered. Red seam. 2 killed.

ELIMAN Frederick - 1899 - 03/07/1899 – Age 37 – Quarryman. Clais Blue Lias Limestone Quarry, Charles Nelson and Co., Warwick. While at work a little distance from the quarry face a piece of stone fell from near the top and struck deceased on the head. He died the same day.

ELLIMAN William - 1894 - 16/10/1894 – Age 28 – Fireman. Harecastle & Woodshutts, Moss Bidder and Elliot Harecastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp caused by gob fire. 1 killed 12 injured.

ELLIOT Evan - 1894 - 16/02/1894 – Age 25 – Rider. Lady Windsor, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Ynysybwl, Glamorgan. While riding up engine plane between 16th and 17th tram in a journey of 24 trams the two trams left the rails and deceased either fell off or jumped off on the wrong side and was crushed between the train and a prop carrying the tail rope 2 foot 8 inches from the rail.

ELLIOT James (non-fatal) - 1890 - 16/04/1890 – Age 44 – Miner. Arniston, Arniston Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Struck by Coal falling from runaway tub. 2 injured. 47 days off.

ELLIOT John (non-fatal) - 1891 - 01/07/1891 - Miner. Garturk-Briton, William Dixon Ltd., Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working face.

ELLIOT John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 08/09/1892 – Age 65 – Bottomer. Muiravonside, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Stirling. Fall of stone.

ELLIOT John - 1896 - 08/09/1896 – Age 39 - Incline rider. Ocean, Eastern Ocean Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fell under waggons and was run over during shunting operations having apparently fallen off the brake lever.

ELLIOT John jnr. (non-fatal) - 1890 - 29/07/1890 – Miner. Grange No. 1, A Yates and Co., Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Fall of midstone from working face.

ELLIOT Joseph - 1891 - 02/11/1891 – Age 62 – Shifter. Boldon, Harton Coal Co., Boldon, Co. Durham. Inspection made. He commenced to take some stone down to make pony height before setting props to make the place safe when a fall of stone occurred. 2.45 am.

ELLIOT Thomas - 1890 - 07/04/1890 – Age 49 – Horsekeeper. Wardley, John Bowes and Partners, Wardley, Co. Durham. Died from abscess owing to injury to hip in 1889. 9.0 am.

ELLIOTT C. - 1890 - 07/02/1890 – Age 69 – Labourer. Manvers Main, Manvers Main Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of timber from a waggon.

ELLIOTT Isaac - 1898 – 13/01/1898 – Age 38 – Dataller. Peelwood, Tyldesley Coal Co. Ltd., Tyldesley, Lancashire. Fall of side in working place coal hanging after shot fired.

ELLIOTT John - 1890 – 05/03/1890 – Age 21 – Loader. Clay Cross No. 7, Clay Cross Iron and Coal Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Getting down coals when they fell and knocked two props out causing the roof to fall upon him.

ELLIOTT John - 1896 – 04/05/1896 – Age 27 – Coke filler. Cwmbran, Paten Nut and Bolt Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Crushed between buffers of railway trucks on the sidings whilst standing out of the way and not noticing what was going on.

ELLIOTT John - 1898 – 19/04/1898 – Age 40 – Dataller. Whitwick No. 5, Whitwick Colliery Co., Leicester. A fire broke out on the main airway of the mine and developed so rapidly that only six men, including the deputy, out of a total of 41, who were at work beyond the fire were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.

ELLIOTT Robert - 1895 – 14/11/1895 – Age 20 – Putter. Brancepeth, Strakers and Love Brancepeth, Co. Durham. Fell and sprained himself while pushing a tub and died from haemorrhage of the lungs 25th.

ELLIOTT Robert - 1895 - 18/09/1895 – Age 54 – Hewer. Boldon, Harton Coal Co., Boldon, Co. Durham. Inquest attended. Killed by a fall of stone from the roof at the coal face. Plenty of timber was at hand but it was not considered, by the deputy who had just been in and the deceased himself, necessary to set any.

ELLIOTT Robert - 1896 - 18/11/1896 – Age 57 – Miner. Eston Ironstone, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., North Yorkshire. He had fired a shot, which made a holing into another place, and without making an examination entered the place and was looking through the hole when a large piece of stone fell from the face and killed him instantly.

ELLIOTT William - 1895 - 20/08/1895 – Age 31 – Stoneman. Addison, Stella Coal Co., Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Killed by a fall of stone canting some props out in a place which was considered by the official in charge to be perfectly safe.

ELLIS Alic - 1899 - 13/01/1899 – Age 14 - Asst. onsetter. Birley East, Sheffield Coal Co., Derbyshire. Deceased had been attending to some full tubs near the pit bottom when others, upon a parallel road, were released from the endless rope. These required locking and he crossed over the road to attend to them when he slipped down and was crushed by the tubs. He died the next day.

ELLIS Charles - 1891 - 25/05/1891 – Age 40 – Engineman. St. Hilda, Harton Coal Co., Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had gone under the drums, for some purpose, and instead of coming out at the end of the drum pit he attempted to pass through the fly wheel when his weight moved the wheel and he was crushed between the spoke of the wheel and the brickwork. 11.30 am.

ELLIS Charles - 1899 - 05/07/1899 – Age 52 – Collier. Gwersyllt, Westminster & Brymbo Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was in the act of capping a sprag, with an iron puncher, when the coal fell off the face, knocked out two props, causing the roof to fall from between three slips upon the deceased.

ELLIS Charles - 1899 - 25/10/1899 – Age 42 – Shifter. Kimblesworth, Charlaw and Scariston Collieries Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. A piece of stone 6 feet by 3 feet by 13 inches thick fell from the roof, at a slip, after a shot had been fired, just as the deceased was passing and caught and killed him.

ELLIS Ebenezer - 1898 - 02/08/1898 – Age 30 – Fireman. Werfa, James Evens and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. He went into an airway leading from a stall in which there was an accumulation of gas and he was suffocated. He had himself discovered the gas and stopped work in this place and one adjoining. It was found that deceased after informing the manager of the gas and the stoppage of these places had actually written his report 'All safe and clear.'

ELLIS Edward - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Age 51 – Collier. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

ELLIS Edward - 1892 - 17/12/1892 – Age 40 – Shaftsman. Milwr (metalliferous). Fall of a bucket-rod while changing drop-clack. The men were thoroughly experienced doing their work in this manner. 2 killed.
