SACKFIELD James - 1896 - 03/03/1896 – Age 18 – Collier. Clifton Hall, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of coal from face, in working place, from a back overhanging 18 inches from vertical. Not spragged, ought to have been.

SADDLER Peter - 1894 - 14/02/1894 – Age 34 – Machineman. Westrigg, James Wood Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof. 2 killed.

SADLER C. - 1891 - 17/09/1891 – Age 57 – Engineman. Silkstone & Dodworth, Old Silkstone & Dodworth Coal Co., Barnsley Yorkshire. Scalded in boiler.

SADLER J. - 1894 - 18/01/1894 – Sinker. Acton Hall, Acton Hall Coal Co., Pontefract, Yorkshire. Fell down shaft.

SADLER John - 1897 - 07/07/1897 – Age 26 – Collier. Llanbradach, Cardiff Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Killed instantly by a fall in the working place. The roof of the Rock or House coal seam is generally strong and consequently timbering is frequently neglected and not kept up as closely as where there is a more fragile roof, hence lives and limbs suffer unnecessarily.

SAGAR William (injured) - 1891 - 09/11/1891 – Age 66 – Fireman. Gannow Top Range Arley, Executors of Col. Hargreaves, Habergam, Lancashire. Slightly burned by ignition of firedamp in a mouthing from the shaft in a seam that had been abandoned seven years without firedamp being seen. The barometer was falling suddenly. Inspection and inquiry.

SALES J. - 1890 - 15/10/1890 – Age 13 – Driver. Treeton, Rothervale Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Injured by tubs.

SALISBURY Thomas - 1895 - 03/12/1895 – Age 57 – Miner. Halkyn (metalliferous), Halkyn Mining Co. Ltd., Flint. Unexpected fall of a piece of stone from the foot-wall of a rise, the stone came from a place about 16 yds. above him and struck him while he was in the level.

SALKELD William (injured) - 1891 - 05/10/1891 – Age 38 – Miner. Towneley, Arley Brooks and Pickup, Towneley, Lancashire. Leg broken by roof from slips whilst holing. Inspection and inquiry.

SALT William - 1899 - 03/07/1899 – Age 16 - Asst. banksman. Great Fenton Homer, Staffordshire Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. While leaning against the fence, on the bank staging to look at birds below the rail, it broke and he fell to the ground. The rail was rotten but being painted no outward defect could be seen.

SALTER James - 1898 - 18/01/1898 – Age 22 – Haulier. Bedlinog No. 1, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road while following his horse towards the face, one pair of timbers discharged and about 3 tons of roof (coal) fell. Rhas Las seam.

SALTHOUSE or SALTERS Francis - 1893 - 02/11/1893 – Age 43 – Hewer. Herrington, Earl of Durham, Fence Houses, Co.Durham. He was caught by the full set of tubs while passing through between them at a landing.

SAMBLES John - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 30 – Hewer. Ravesworth, Charles Perkins and Partners, Ravesworth, Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was taking off the last part of the lift, when the deputy went into the place and had pricked through into the waste at one point. The deputy had a prop ready to set and was waiting whilst the deceased hewed some of the bottom coals to fill his tub when the stone fell from a slippery fracture crushing down the coal and canting the prop and causing instant death.

SAMPSON H. - 1891 – 14/01/1891 – Age 19 – Miner. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Wheal Agar Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Deceased, and his comrade, were engaged tramming at the 245 fathom level and while "dumping" the waggon at the plat the runner next the shaft broke and he fell, with the waggon, into the shaft. The timber proved to be of inferior quality and broke off quite short. A verdict of "Accidental Death" was returned but the jury considered that the timber man of the mine was to blame for not having noticed the nature of the timber and the captain of that part of the mine was so censured for not seeing that the entrance into the shaft was properly fenced.

SAMPSON John - 1899 - 18/12/1899 – Age 44 – Shotfirer. Lingdale Ironstone, Pease and Partners Ltd., North Yorkshire. His head was cut slightly by a fall of a small sharp piece of stone, off the face, nothing was thought of the injury at the time but erysipelas set in and he died on January 2nd 1900.

SAMPY J. - 1891 - 07/07/1891 – Age 34 – Sinker. Rotherham Main, J Brown and Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Stay broke, to which was suspended one of the chains of the scaffold, causing it to tilt when the men fell off. 4 killed.

SAMSON George (non-fatal) - 1891 - 18/12/1891 – Age 15 – Drawer. Haywood, Haywood Gas Coal Co., Lanarkshire. Crushed by tub. Still off.

SAMSON James - 1893 - 21/11/1893 – Age 36 – Miner. Stonelaw No. 3, Farme Coal Co., Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working face.

SAMSON John - 1897 - 29/12/1897 – Age 34 – Fireman. Ocean Park, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Killed by trams on an incline rising 2.5 inches per yard.

SAMUEL E. - 1899 - 23/11/1899 – Age 32 – Hitcher. Naval Pandy, Naval Colliery Co. (1897) Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck by a runaway tram which had started, owing to insufficient spragging, from the point where it was loaded with coal, gathered from the roadway. Died 2nd December.

SAMUEL Jacob - 1898 - 19/11/1898 – Age 29 – Haulier. Naval Pandy, Naval Colliery Co. (1897) Ltd., Glamorgan. Knocked down by a tram, which were being dragged forward, off the road by a haulage engine worked by a boy and not in proper order. There were no manholes on this portion of engine plane 115 yards long.

SAMUEL John - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 22 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

SAMUEL Philip - 1898 - 21/01/1898 – Age 24 – Haulier. Whitworth No. 2, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. While riding on a tram he was fatally crushed against timber which the horse disturbed in passing.

SAMUEL Samuel - 1892 - 01/12/1892 – Age 57 – Collier. Dunraven, Francis R Crawshay, Treherbert, Glamorgan. Fall of roof between two slips, 18 inches apart, close to the face at the road end. One prop 3 foot back under rippings.

SAMUEL Thomas - 1892 - 06/12/1892 – Age 38 – Collier. Nixons Navigation Cwm Cynon, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face. Died 29th June from injuries received on 6th Dec. 1892. Rhondda seam.

SAMUEL William - 1893 - 10/10/1893 – Age 57 – Blocklayer. Ysradgynlais, Ysradgynlais & Swansea Colliery Co. Ltd., Ysradgynlais, Brecon. Killed by the fall of a shoot under a screen. The shoot was not in very good condition.

SANDERS Amos - 1892 - 13/10/1892 – Age 39 – Stallman. Wyken, Wyken Colliery Co., Coventry, Warwick. Fall of coal. Deceased was preparing to fire a shot when some overhanging coal fell and fatally injured him. Died 26th October.

SANDERS Charles - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 43 - Asst. ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

SANDERS Edward - 1896 - 07/02/1896 – Age 30 – Collier. Pochin, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. While removing loose stone, after a shot, a large stone from the roof, which had probably been loosened by the shot, fell on him. A prop with a good lid, which was under it, was discharged.

SANDERS Frederick - 1892 - 25/10/1892 – Age 27 – Stallman. Denby, W Drury-Lowe, Derby, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased had been taking coal down and was about to set a prop when a large quantity of roof fell upon him. Died 30th Oct.

SANDERS Herbert - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 25 – Collier. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

SANDERS Joseph H. - 1899 - 28/01/1899 – Age 36 – Hewer. Woodhorn, Ashington Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. While filling coals at a longwall face, a large stone fell from between two slips and killed deceased. The place had been carefully examined by the deputy and was considered to be securely timbered.

SANDERS or SAUNDERS Robert - 1896 - 27/01/1896 – Age 30 – Ostler. Ferndale Nos 7 & 8, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp 57 killed.

SANDERS Raymond David - 1897 - 27/05/1897 – Age 41 – Labourer. Redditch Sand (quarry), George Huxley, Warwick. Fall of sand and earth. Deceased, and others, were loading sand from the face of the quarry when the sand slipped and buried the deceased. No one appeared to be in charge of the work.

SANDERS Richard (injured) - 1890 - 07/05/1890 – Age 25 – Miner. Watts Blake Bearne (clay), Watts Blake Bearne Co., Newton Abbot, Cornwall. The man was engaged at his usual work, at the bottom of the pit, when a piece of timber fell from about 20 feet above him and struck him on the side of the head near the ear rendering him unconscious. His injuries however were not of such a serious nature as was at first anticipated and in due time he recovered.

SANDERS Robert - 1899 - 01/02/1899 – Age 26 – Drawer. Collins Green, Collins Green Colliery Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased was standing by the side of his empty tub, which he had upset to let a drawer pass down with a full tub, when he was struck by a runaway tub, owing the drawer stated to one of two iron scotches falling out and the tub overcame him.

SANDERS W. - 1892 - 20/09/1892 – Age 32 – Collier. Aldwarke Main, J Brown and Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

SANDERS William - 1899 - 22/07/1899 – Age 62 – Joiner. Newfield, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He and other men were lifting a pair of legs, for a new gangway, when the feet slipped and they fell upon his head and killed him.

SANDERSON Benjamin - 1899 - 22/09/1899 – Age 66 – Hewer. South Medmosley, Owners of South Medmosley Colliery,  Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was working in a skirting and was supposed to be setting props and headtree when a fall of stone from slips took place. The working place was otherwise well timbered and the deputy was going into the place for the third time when the accident occurred.

SANDERSON F. - 1897 - 17/06/1897 – Age 15 – Driver. Cadeby Main, Denaby & Cadeby Main Coal Co. Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

SANDERSON George (non-fatal) - 1890 - 07/01/1890 – Age 24 – Filler. Addiwell No. 2 Muirhall, Youngs Paraffin Light & Mineral Oil Co., Edinburgh. Fall of roof. 64 days off.

SANDERSON H. - 1890 - 20/05/1890 – Age 22 – Trammer. Strafford, Strafford Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of stone.

SANDERSON J.T. (injured) - 1890 - 18/04/1890 – Age 34 – Miner. Whittaker Bridge 6 Foot, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Radcliffe, Lancashire. foot cut off by coal from a slip whilst he was spragging it.

SANDERSON James - 1891 - 03/08/1891 – Age 51 – Roadsman. Bredisholme No. 2, Glasgow Iron and Steel Co., Uddingston, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on road.

SANDERSON William - 1892 - 19/07/1892 – Age 52 – Hewer. Bebside, Bebside Coal Co. Ltd., Bebside, Northumberland. Inquest attended. As he was in the act of setting a prop a stone fell from between two slips.

SANDON John - 1891 - 13/10/1891 – Age 18 – Miner. Wheal Bassett (metalliferous), Wheal Bassett Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Fall of ground from unseen slips or slides where he was working in the "Great Flat Lode".

SANDS William - 1898 - 19/01/1898 – Age 30 – Hewer. Burnhope, UA Ritson, Co.Durham. When travelling outbye, by a day drift which passes the upcast shaft, he opened a door into the shaft and slipped in and fell to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of 516 feet and was killed instantly.

SANGSTER John - 1892 - 23/12/1892 – Age 44 – Hewer. Hebburn, Wallsend and Hebburn Coal Co., Ltd., Hebburn,  Co.Durham. Inquiries made. Riding on a full sett contrary to rules and was crushed against the roof.

SANKEY Henry - 1893 - 07/02/1893 – Age 43 – Stallman. Albert Derbyshire, Silkstone Coal Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of coal. Deceased was working under overhanging top coal, which had been unspragged contrary to the special rules of the mine. The top coal fell upon him.

SARAH Joseph - 1896 - 27/01/1896 – Age 21 - Tin dresser. Wheal Granville Tin (metalliferous), Wheal Granville Mining Co., Cornwall. He walked in some black tin, just drawn out of the burning furnace, and before it had been properly cooled. His feet were badly burned and in consequence of the state of his health death resulted a week afterwards.

SASSELL G. - 1894 - 26/10/1894 – Age 69 – Dataller. Cannock Lodge, Cannock Lodge Colliery Co., Bloxwich, Staffordshire. Fall of roof in untimbered rock road.

SATTERLEY John Warren - 1898 - 25/02/1898 – Age 60 – Miner. Carn Brea & Tincroft, Carn Brea & Tincroft Mines Ltd., Cornwall. Killed by a fall of hanging wall which he was preparing to set timbers.

SAULT J. - 1892 - 07/10/1892 – Age 36 – Filler. Denaby Main, Denaby Main Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

SAUNDERS Frederick - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 21 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

SAUNDERS Henry (non-fatal) - 1893 - 13/09/1893 – Age 47 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mine Adventurers, Carn Brea, Cornwall. He and others were engaged on a temporary scaffold, in a stope, and while about to change a drill he overbalanced or slipped and fell about 6 fathoms.

SAUNDERS Henry - 1898 - 29/12/1898 – Age 23 – Collier. New Tredegar, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fell from the descending cage. There seems every reason to think that this was the result of a fainting fit, to which he was subject, but whether it was so or not cannot be definitely ascertained. It in any case comes under the Coal Mines Regulation Act.

SAUNDERS John - 1897 - 30/10/1897 – Age 42 – Repairer. New Fancy, Parkend Deep Navigation Collieries Co. Ltd., Gloucester. Fall of rock roof in a roadway, where he was filling a tram of rubbish, which had been thrown back from a wind road. The place apparently took a sudden weight.

SAUNDERS Morgan - 1897 - 05/01/1897 – Age 23 – Collier. Broadoak, Samuel Thomas, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 5 killed.

SAUNDERS or SANDERS Robert - 1896 - 27/01/1896 – Age 30 – Ostler. Ferndale Nos 7 & 8, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 57 killed.

SAUNDERS William - 1898 - 25/08/1898 – Age 20 – Labourer. Lllanelwedd Andesite Quarry, William Lant, Radnor. While he was working at a crane, the jib of another crane broke, as a stone was being raised with it, and fell on him. Killed on the spot. The timber of the jib was quite rotten, inside the cast iron cap where it broke, but the rest seemed sound.

SAUNDRY William - 1895 - 02/10/1895 – Age 64 – Labourer. South Condurrow (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. He was seized with a paralytic stroke, while at work, from which he died next day.

SAVAGE David (non-fatal) - 1892 - 15/07/1892 – Miner. Drummuir No. 3, Glengarnock Iron and Steel Co., Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Fall of roof at working face.

SAVAGE George (injured) - 1890 - 16/09/1890 – Age 17 – Drawer. Agecroft Rams, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Pendlebury, Lancashire. Injured by a tub as it was about to be hooked on in the engine brow.

SAVAGE John (non-fatal) - 1890 - 29/09/1890 – Age 26 – Miner. Pumpherston, Pumpherston Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Explosion of shot. 14 days off.

SAVAGE Joseph - 1896 - 14/01/1896 – Age 32 – Carter. Golden Valley, A Brain and Co., Somerset. Whilst riding up the engine plane on a full journey, contrary to rules, he was crushed against the roof receiving injuries from which he died.

SAVAGE Peter (non-fatal) - 1890 - 27/03/1890 – Age 17 – Drawer. Bathville, James Wood, Linlithgow. Fall of roof. 24 days off.

SAVAGE Peter - 1899 - 15/05/1899 – Age 35 – Fireman. Ayrshire Drumley No. 1, George Taylor and Co., Ayrshire. While firing two shots of amvis, by electricity, one did not go off. He returned to examine the cable and, having done this, told a miner to again try the battery while he was standing close to the shot. The miner did as he was told and the shot went off.

SAVILLE David - 1891 - 15/07/1891 – Age 56 – Dataler. Pilsley, Pilsley Colliery Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was building a pack at the end of a stall and had knocked out a prop, which supported the roof near a faulty place. He appears to have done so for convenience in his work.

SAVILLE R. - 1894 - 19/05/1894 – Age 55 – Undermanager. Allerton Main, T and RW Bower, Leeds, Yorkshire. Gas, 3 killed, died 28th.

SAVILLE T. - 1890 - 19/05/1890 – Age 30 – Collier. Lane Head (metalliferous), S Cliffe and Son, Brighouse, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

SAXBY Alfred - 1897 - 17/03/1897 – Age 45 – Sinker. Shirebrook, Shirebrook Colliery Co., Derbyshire. The winding rope of a sinking shaft, about 490 yards deep, broke three yards from the cap when the hoppit had nearly reached the surface. It fell to the bottom of the shaft where 23 men were working and injured five others. He died on the 24th.

SAXON William - 1891 - 27/08/1891 – Age 20 – Haulier. North Dunraven, London & South Wales Coal Co. Ltd., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Run over by trains. He was taking some rails inbye and it was thought one of them slipped causing the horse to start too quickly.

SAXTON Henry - 1891 - 07/10/1891 – Age 19 – Striker. Cossall, Cossall Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. When descending the shaft the engineman stopped the cage and the deceased, thinking he was at the bottom, stepped out and fell about 50 yards. 5.0 pm.

SAYCE Henry - 1896 - 10/09/1896 – Age 22 – Rider. Powell’s Treaman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Found dead under the seventh tram of a journey of 20 on which he was acting as rider.

SAYER William - 1895 - 26/11/1895 – Age 29 – Labourer. Bill Street Brickfield (quarry), Kent. Some of the working face fell upon him unexpectedly and killed him on the spot.

SAYNOR George - 1897 - 18/03/1897 – Age 15 – Driver. Berwick Main, Charles Perkins and Partners, Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was probably trying to get on a full set of tubs and had fallen in front of the front tub. There was no evidence to show how it happened.

SCAHILL Thomas (non-fatal) - 1891 - 05/10/1891 – Labourer. Garscube No. 8 Killermont, Robert Addie and Sons, Maryhill, Lanarkshire. Hand caught by a hand crane.

SCAMMEL Edward - 1894 - 21/09/1894 – Age 22 – Collier. Gilfrachgogh, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Gilfach, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (5 feet x 2 feet 9 inches x 14 inches to 16 inches thick) at face between coal and props, stood 5 to 8 feet back, and died 21st October. No. 3 Rhondda seam pillar and stall.

SCANLAN Robert - 1898 - 04/07/1898 – Age 51 – Fireman. Drummuir, Glengarnock Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. A shot, apparently unknown to him, was being fired and it went off as he was passing.

SCARFE Joseph - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 16. Coombs, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 139 killed.

SCARGILL James - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 50. Coombs, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 139 killed.

SCARGILL Lot - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 28. Coombs, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 139 killed.

SCARGILL Robert - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 40. Coombs, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 139 killed.

SCARGILL Rufus - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 16. Coombs, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 139 killed.

SCARLETT John - 1891 - 19/10/1891 – Age 16 - Incline boy. Byers Green, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Willington, Co.Durham. While guiding the rope on to the drum, of an underground engine, he got caught by some means and was wound on to the drum by the rope. 2.45 pm.

SCARRY James - 1892 - 15/09/1892 – Age 25 – Dataler. Pemberton, Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiry made. As the deceased was drawing out a chock, it sprung out a portion striking him on the head, he worked his shift and walked home but he became unconscious having ruptured an artery, he died the following day.

SCHNEIDER William - 1899 - 08/09/1899 – Age 36 – Miner. Glenclelland No. 1, Kerr and Mitchell Lanarkshire. While descending the shaft, on the lower deck of the cage, he put out his head to listen to a companion speaking and got jammed between the cage and the pit mouth. It was his first day at the pit.

SCHOFIELD James (non-fatal) - 1892 - 23/09/1892 – Drawer. Drumpeller No. 1, Drumpeller Coal Co., Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Struck by a runaway hutch on a cuddie brae.

SCHOFIELD J. - 1897 - 17/02/1897 – Age 68 – Collier. Thrybergh Hall, J and J Charlesworth, Yorkshire. Run over by Corves on inclined plane. Died 20th Feb.

SCHOFIELD John - 1896 - 28/11/1896 – Age 54 - Pit carpenter. Orrell, Orrell Colliery Co., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was engaged with others fixing a pulley frame, across the endless rope motion level, when a stone fell from a slip in the roof on the frame and struck the deceased. He succumbed to the injuries received on Dec. 2nd.

SCHOFIELD Robert - 1890 - 07/11/1890 – Age 54 – Banksman. Jubilee, Platt Bros. and Co. Ltd., Shaw, Lancashire. Killed by falling down the shaft from the tower landing at the surface, he followed a tub, which he pushed in having apparently forgotten that he had lifted the fence and sent the cage up to the top landing.

SCHOFIELD Robert - 1893 - 20/03/1893 – Age 17 – Dataller. Peel Hall, James Roscoe and Sons, Little Hulton, Lancashire. Crushed by tub being lowered down engine plane, loaded with rails and sleepers. Not being sufficiently scotched it overpowered and ran away. Deceased held on to the tub until it collided with other tubs at the bottom of plane.

SCHOFIELD S. - 1891 - 26/08/1891 – Age 29 – Sinker. Morley Main, W Ackroyd and Bros., Leeds, Yorkshire. Fell down shaft.

The shot had miss fire 19 hours before and he was getting down the roof. It is supposed that a spark from his pick ignited the charge of powder which had missed fire.

SCOTHERN Samuel - 1895 - 24/12/1895 – Age 55 – Stallman. Birley, East Sheffield Coal Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. He was reported as having received a slight injury but he died on 6th Jan. 1896 from "pneumonia," not caused by the cut.

SCOTT Adam - 1891 - 01/09/1891 – Age 16 – Repairer. Garriongill, Coltness Iron Co. Ltd., Fife. Fall of coal and stone.

SCOTT Albert - 1895 - 06/05/1895 – Age 19 – Jigger. Moorgreen, Barber Walker and Co., Nottinghamshire. A train of full trams, passing down an inclined roadway, became detached from the rope and ran away. They caught deceased near the bottom of the incline and fatally injured him.

SCOTT Andrew (non-fatal) - 1892 - 27/10/1892 – Undermanager. Nethercoy No. 3, Carron Co., Kilsyth, Ayrshire. Explosion of firedamp. 2 injured.

SCOTT Andrew - 1899 - 08/11/1899 – Age 68 – Labourer. Clifton, Allerdale Coal Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was employed in tipping stones over a refuse heap, a portion which suddenly subsided carrying him away into the river Derwent. The river was in flood and had undermined the heap. The body was not recovered until nineteen days afterwards.

SCOTT Archibald - 1898 - 22/04/1898 – Age 17 – Drawer. Allanton, Morningside Coal Co., Lanarkshire. A set of ten loaded tubs was being lifted from a level at its junction with the engine dook. The two leading tubs were very lightly loaded and deceased was assisting the dook runner to guide them round the curve. When the strain came on the rope the tubs were pulled off the rails, towards the inside of the curve, and struck the deceased causing injuries to which he succumbed four days afterwards.

SCOTT George - 1897 - 30/04/1897 – Age 18 – Miner. Pumpherston Oil Shale, Pumpherston Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased appears to have been charging or stemming a shot and using a steel pinch or lever as a stemmer. The charge exploded killing him on the spot and seriously injuring a fellow workman.

SCOTT John Edward Lawson - 1896 - 17/07/1896 – Age 31 – Hewer. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co., Ashington,  Northumberland. Inquest attended. He was kirving the coal when a fall took place. He had neglected to set sprags or props.

SCOTT John William - 1892 - 12/12/1892 – Age 16 - Taker off. Ladyshore, John Fletcher, Little Lever, Lancashire. Playing with a rope used to tie props together. He had fastened one end to the bar and formed a loop; supposed to have been sitting on a tub with his hand through the loop, he slipped off the tub and was hung.

SCOTT John William - 1898 - 12/01/1898 – Age 21 – Dataller. Tibshelf No. 2, Babbington Coal Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased, was engaged in repairing a main roadway, of the mine, and they were taking down the roof to increase the height. Deceased was filling a tram when a portion of the roof fell and struck him before he had time to escape, after being warned that the roof was way.

SCOTT Joseph - 1894 - 19/12/1894 – Age 48 – Banksman. Donisthorpe, Checkland Son and Williams, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicester. Deceased was crushed between two full trams of coal whilst at work on the pit bank. He died 22nd.

SCOTT Matthew - 1895 - 31/07/1895 – Age 27 – Hewer. Washington, Washington Colliery Co., Washington, Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased, in order to work more freely, was taking some props out to set elsewhere when some stone fell on him from a hitch leader and slips.

SCOTT Michael - 1894 - 24/09/1894 – Age 55 – Miner. Montreal No. 5 (metalliferous), John Stirling, Cleator Moor, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. A temporary staging had been placed across the top of the shaft, to facilitate repairs, and the accident was caused by the engineman attempting to stop the cage at the pit top instead of stopping at the surface. 2 killed.

SCOTT Ralph - 1899 - 03/10/1899 – Age 30 – Miner. Eston Ironstone, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., North Yorkshire. He had shot out a piece of stone from the top, in which there had been an unseen slip, and this allowed the top to come away on to him and injure him so severely that he died short after being got to the hospital.

SCOTT Robert - 1896 - 11/08/1896 – Age 38 – Collier. Croftside, Darcy Lever Coal Co., Lancashire. Fall of roof from between slips known to be there, inefficient props. In working place.

SCOTT Robert - 1899 - 29/06/1899 – Age 53 – Roadsman. Dykehead, Summerlee & Mossend Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was laying a hutch road in to a stoop, which was about to be taken out, when a stone, 5 foot by 4 foot at extremes and 5.5 inches in thickness, suddenly fell upon him swinging out the props which had been under its lighter end. He sustained injuries to which he succumbed three days later.

SCOTT Robert A. - 1894 - 03/04/1894 – Age 16 - Waggon lad. Choppington, B Bebside Coal Co. Ltd., Choppington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. When lowering waggons towards the screens he was sitting on the brake lever of one of the waggons (a position he should not have been in) and must have slipped and fallen under the wheels.

SCOTT Thomas - 1892 - 13/07/1892 – Age 19 - Dook header. Newbattle, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Burned by oil.

SCOTT Thomas - 1893 - 26/05/1893 – Age 22 – Hewer. Coanwood, Coanwood Coal Co., Coanwood, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was hewing and in doing so exposed a back, which ran up into the roof, when the stone suddenly came away, to a feather edge, and breaking a plank under it. The deputy was in the place at the time but did not intend to set any more timber.

SCOTT Timothy - 1893 - 02/10/1893 – Age 40 – Onsetter. South Derwent, Owners of South Derwent Colliery, South Derwent, Co.Durham. Inspection made. Deceased was leaning over the gate, at the inset, talking to another onsetter at a seam below, when the descending cage caught his head. There is a proper and safe place for the onsetter to speak to the one below if necessary.

SCOTT William - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Age 29 – Collier. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

SCOTT William - 1898 - 10/09/1898 – Age 14 – Driver. Crake Scarr, Woodland Collieries Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was riding on the limbers and fell off in front of a set of empty tubs and the first two passed over him causing instant death.

SCOTT William - 1898 - 13/07/1898 – Age 52 – Miner. Fergushill No. 28, Archibald Finnie and Son, Ayrshire. When brushing his road a stone fell from between two slypes. Caused by want of crowns.

SCOTT William - 1899 - 31/01/1899 – Age 18 - Screen engineman. St Helens, Pease and Partners, Co.Durham. He was leaning on the fencing of a belt wheel and was caught by the belt and killed.

SCRAGG J.T. - 1893 - 15/11/1893 – Age 17 - Engine tenter. Talk o’th’ Hill, Talk o’th’ Hill Colliery Co. Ltd., Talk o’th’ Hill, Staffordshire. Crushed by drum of underground hauling engine.

SCRIMSHAW Rayner - 1896 - 30/04/1896 – Age 22. Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.

SCULLION John jnr. (non-fatal) - 1891 - 11/08/1891 – Miner. Garscube No. 8, Robert Addie and Sons, Maryhill, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at road head.

SCULLY Patrick - 1896 - 07/12/1896 – Age 40 – Collier. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co. Ltd., Leigh, Lancashire. Inquiry made. The deceased was pulling some loose coal off the face, and when stepping back a piece of ley over coal fell fracturing his leg below the knee. He died at the Manchester Infirmary whilst undergoing an operation on June 11th 1897.

SCUPHAM Charles - 1898 - 15/04/1898 – Age 17 - Horse leader. Skelton Park Ironstone, Bell Bros. Ltd., North Yorkshire. When coming outbye, with a set of full tubs, down a gradient of 1 in 36, he either slipped or caught his foot against a sleeper and fell in front of the tubs and three of them passed over him crushing him so severely that he was killed instantly.

SCURFIELD James - 1899 - 30/05/1899 – Age 38 – Hewer. Lumley, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. When hewing in a broken jud, he came across a slip at which some stone fell and killed him.

SCURR James - 1896 - 23/04/1896 – Age 49 – Shifter. Tudhoe, Weardale Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Side injured by a fall of stone. Died May 4th.

SEABORN George - 1896 - 25/12/1896 – Age 76. Snuff Mill (quarry), Bristol. Killed by falling into a disused quarry in consequence of the side of the lane not being properly fenced. The jury returned a verdict of "Culpable Negligence or Manslaughter" against the Manager Director of the company, and also against the Chairman and Sanitary Inspector of the Stapleton Rural District Council, which verdict was afterwards quashed on technical points.

SEABRIDGE Charles - 1891 - 23/06/1891 – Age 36 – Dataler. Longton Hall, Longton Hall Co. Ltd., Longton, Staffordshire. Fall of roof and sides on engine dip while repairing. In Great Row Seam.

SEAL Edward - 1898 - 18/08/1898 – Age 53 – Banksman. South Leicestershire, South Leicestershire Colliery Co., Leicestershire. He died suddenly whilst preparing to start the days work at the Colliery. His death was due to natural causes.

SEARES Frederick - 1892 - 16/11/1892 – Age 16 – Driver. Clifton, Clifton Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of side. A large piece of stone fell from the side of the roadway and struck the deceased as he was walking in front of his pony. He died 27th November.

SEARGANT J.B. (injured) - 1894 - 17/09/1894 – Age 18 – Waggoner. Shelton Deep, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Hanley, Staffordshire. Fell down and broke his arm while out at loosit.

SEARLE Walter - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 20 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

SEATH Alexander (non-fatal) - 1893 - 19/08/1893 – Age 22 – Miner. Donibristle, Donibristle Colliery Co. Fife. Fall of stone. 116 days off.

SEATORY John - 1891 - 07/10/1891 – Age 27 – Stoneman. St. Hilda, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Fall of stone whilst driving a crosscut through some old pillars. 8.40 am.

SEDDON Albert Alonzo - 1895 - 11/02/1895 – Age 32 – Labourer. Ashton’s Field, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. While lowering a waggon he slipped and dislocated his thumb, never worked any more. Died 25th May. No medical evidence, very doubtful if due to the accident.

SEDDON George - 1895 - 05/06/1895 – Age 35 – Collier. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co. Ltd., Leigh, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was getting coal at the face where there were breaks in the roof. The fireman had instructed him to work it endways but he was getting loose coal down the other way when the roof fell upon him. His road was chocked within 4 feet of the face.

SEDDON James (injured) - 1891 - 10/09/1891 – Age 16 – Drawer. Ringley, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Pilkington, Lancashire. Injured by roof falling where dirt was being stowed. Inspection and inquiry.

SEDDON James - 1892 - 27/10/1892 – Age 56 - Coal picker. Robin Hood Sidings, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Clifton, Lancashire. Fell from platform at screen, on private branch railway siding, alongside Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways Co’s main line. Fell 5 feet.

SEDDON James - 1896 - 06/03/1896 – Age 31 – Collier. Agecroft, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place from slips. Insufficient timber set. 2 killed.

SEDDON John - 1896 - 20/02/1896 – Age 51 – Collier. Westleigh, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fell in cage from top to bottom of pit. Engineman started upwards instead of downwards. Disengaging hook fixed the cage but the safety catches, which should have held the cage did not do so. 8 killed.

SEDDON Joseph - 1898 - 12/01/1898 – Age 35 – Collier. Princess, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was in the act of getting stone down, from over the face, when a stone fell upon him from between two slips in the roof. The road was propped on each side but not barred.

SEDDON Matthew (injured) - 1890 - 03/06/1890 – Age 55 – Dayman. Chequerbent Yard, Hulton Colliery Co., Over Hulton, Lancashire. Strained himself as alleged when stowing rubbish on some arching.

SEDDON Robert - 1893 - 02/02/1893 – Age 33 – Dataller. Pendlebury, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Pendlebury, Lancashire. The deceased, and another man, were building a pack in a finished place, deceased knocked out a prop when a great quantity of roof fell on him. Fireman had told them not to knock out any more props until the pack was built up.

SEDDON Thomas - 1896 - 06/03/1896 – Age 28 – Collier. Agecroft, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place from slips. Insufficient timber set. 2 killed.

SEDDON William - 1890 - 22/08/1890 – Age 29 – Collier. Rainford, Rainford Coal Co. Ltd., Rainford, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. This happened in an old road which had recently been re-timbered the bars being from 2 to 3 feet apart. He was about to reset one of the legs which had become displaced, when there was a heavy fall carrying five or six bars with it.
