VAINES H. - 1898 - 03/01/1898 – Age 36 – Collier. Waleswood, Skinner and Holford, Yorkshire. Crushed by Corves on engine plane. Died 5th Jan.

VALENTINE John (injured) - 1890 - 08/07/1890 – Age 25 – Drawer. Chanters 5 Foot, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Atherton, Lancashire. Injured by tubs which became uncoupled in the engine brow and crushed them as they were getting into a manhole. 2 injured.

VALENTINE John - 1898 - 01/06/1898 – Age 33 – Collier. Chanters, Fletcher Burrows, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place, from three slips, one known the other two could have been seen. Reckless delay in placing a prop between two 9 feet apart usual distance 3 to 4 feet.

VALENTINE Joseph - 1899 - 24/03/1899 – Age 18 - Engine attdnt. Ashton Moss, New Moss Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Crushed by tubs in engine plane shunt, want of room or manhole.

VALLANCE Herbert - 1891 - 02/03/1891 – Age 16 - Screen boy. Streetley, Shire Oaks Colliery Co., Worksop, Nottinghamshire. Crushed between the buffers of two railway waggons under the screens. No evidence to show what brought the boy at the waggons or what he was doing at the time of the accident. 11.50 am.

VALLANCE James (non-fatal) - 1892 - 14/12/1892 – Overman. Netherjohnstone No. 1, Belhaven Colliery Co., Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 2 injured.

VALLANCE Robert - 1898 - 10/05/1898 – Age 24 – Brusher. Birkenshaw, Larkhill Brickfields Ltd., Lanarkshire. Killed by a fall of roof stone in a district of longwall workings in the Virtuewell Seam, recently restarted.

VANCE David - 1890 - 13/03/1890 - Age 19 – Miner. Sundrum No. 3, George Taylor and Co., Ayrshire. Fall of coal.

VANSTONE W. - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Collier. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

VARDON John - 1897 - 03/02/1897 – Age 40 – Miner. Prestongrange, Summerlee & Mossend Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Haddington, Deceased was engaged making a cage seat, and a hole for a shot was lowered to a depth of 3 feet. The charge was two of seven cartridges of gelignite and while he was inserting the fourth an explosion occurred. The cartridges which apparently were frozen were being pushed back with the wooden handle of a mash.

VARDY John - 1896 - 13/04/1896 – Age 20 – Loader. Blackwell, A Blackwell Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was getting stone from the goaf to build a pack, when the roof fell upon him. The roof of the goaf should have been carefully examined by the stallman before deceased entered the same.

VAREY William - 1893 - 13/02/1893 – Age 28 – Stallman. High Park, Barber Walker and Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was holing the coal on the top or bannocking, when a sprag was knocked out liberating the roof which fell and killed the deceased.

VAREY William - 1896 - 30/04/1896. Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.

VARLEY George - 1899 - 06/04/1899 – Age 50 – Collier. Darcy Lever, Darcy Lever Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of coal from face of working place overhanging cracked, unspragged.

VARLEY W - 1898 - 25/04/1898 – Age 30 – Collier. North Gawber, Fountain and Burnley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

VARNHAM William - 1896 - 25/08/1896 – Age 34 – Stallman. Swannington, New Swannington Colliery Co., Leicester. Fall of roof. Deceased and another man were engaged in putting up a bar in the stall when a large quantity fell killing him and injuring the other man.

VASEY Thomas - 1896 - 24/01/1896 – Age 16 - Helper up. Brancepeth, Strakers and Love, Co.Durham. While riding in a set, a tub got off the way and the empty set ran into the full one, standing in the landing it threw the tub, in which he was in against, the side and killed him.

VASSIE John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 27/03/1893 – Age 17 – Miner. Barbaldie, H Walker and Cameron, Linlithgow. Fall of side. 24 days off.

VATER David - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 61 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

VAUGHAN Issac - 1894 - 20/10/1894 – Age 61 – Collier. Wombridge, Rose & Crown Hopley Bros., Wellington, Shropshire. Injured his side while knocking a sprag out. Died 18th Mar.

VAUGHAN John - 1895 - 03/09/1895 – Age 63 – Pitman. Lower Deep, Duffryn John Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Run over by a journey of seven trams. He apparently misjudged the position of the journey on the engine plane and was killed, about 20 yards from the engine house. Manholes were provided, 10 yards apart at this place.

VAUGHAN John - 1898 - 10/06/1898 – Age 42 – Collier. Abergorky, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Died 14th July from injuries received by the explosion of a charge of rouberite, which had missed fire on the previous day. Deceased was probably removing the wires with detonator attached, after pulling down the shattered stone caused by a shot alongside.

VAUGHAN John Edwin - 1892 - 03/05/1892 – Age 32 – Hewer. Ashton Vale, Ashton Vale Iron Co. Ltd., Bristol, Gloucester. Sudden irruption of water from an unknown and unsuspected old shaft, no record of which were found, even now. It was only sunk through the coal and it is supposed to have been 130 to 150 years ago. The seam had not been opened out upon. 2 killed.

VAUGHAN Pat (non-fatal) - 1891 - 30/06/1891 – Age 32 – Collier. Haywood, Haywood Gas Coal Co., Lanarkshire. Fall of coal.

VAUGHAN W. - 1899 - 03/08/1899 – Age 13 – Driver. Denaby Main, Denaby and Cadeby Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Run over by tubs on inclined plane. Died 9th August.

VEITCH Thomas (non-fatal) - 1891 - 22/12/1891 – Age 71 – Joiner. Cuttlehill, Wallace Bros., Fife. Crushed by cage. Still off.

VEITCH Thomas - 1894 - 30/03/1894 – Age 36 – Brakesman. Backworth, Church Owners of Backworth & West Cramlington Collieries, Backworth, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Scalded at a manhole door of a boiler. He endeavoured to take off the manhole door when, according to the evidence, there were still five pounds pressure showing on the steam gauge when the steam and water flew out and scalded him.

VENABLES W. - 1895 - 08/01/1895 – Age 59 – Collier. Monk Bretton, Monk Bretton Coal Co., Yorkshire. Run over by train on sidings. Died 11th Jan.

VENNER Edward - 1893 - 03/03/1893 – Age 14 – Driver. East Holywell, East Holywell Coal Co. Ltd., East Holywell, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. A stone fell out from between two balks, which were 7 foot apart at the flat. According to the evidence of the deputy, who was at the flat at the time and of others no danger had been apprehended. It is possible that the weight had ridden over from a longwall face, not far off, and so disturbed the roof.

VENNER Tom - 1898 - 01/12/1898 – Age 31 - Timber drawer. Seaham, Marquis of Londonderry, Co.Durham. He was drawing some props at the low end of an end, when a stone fell away at a slip in the roof and caught and killed him.

VENTERS James - 1891 - 26/05/1891 – Age 35 – Collier. Little Raith, Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Fall of roof.

VENTRISS C. * - 1896 - 30/10/1896 – Age 30. Liverton Cargo, Fleet Iron Co. Ltd., Loftus, Yorkshire.

VERDON John (non-fatal) - 1892 - 14/03/1892 – Miner. Carfin No. 2, Carfin Coal Co., Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 4 injured.

VERNE Samuel - 1896 - 27/06/1896 – Age 21 – Haulier. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fatally injured by journey, on parting, while assisting to start it, having fallen and been dragged by the side for 6 yard.

VERNON Charles - 1895 - 14/01/1895 – Age 28 – Collier. Audley, W Rigby and Co., Audley, Staffordshire. Irruption of water from old working. 77 killed.

VERNON Henry - 1891 - 31/08/1891 – Age 20 – Repairer. Malgo, Bristol Collieries Co. Ltd., Bristol, Gloucester. Explosion of firedamp at naked 10 lights which were prohibited at the place. 10 killed.

VERNON James - 1893 - 03/11/1893 – Age 52 – Sinker. Mosley Common, Bridgewater Trustees, Worsley, Lancashire. Crushed by hoppet of bricks lowered on to walling scaffold by engineman’s mike.

VERNON Thomas - 1892 - 26/10/1892 – Age 56 – Labourer. Cadley Hill, Hall and Boardman, Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Run over by the colliery locomotive, on a branch railway, between two collieries. It was a very foggy morning.

VIAL Benjamin - 1891 - 31/07/1891 – Age 33 – Miner. Tindene (metalliferous), Tindene Mining Co., Marazion, Cornwall. He was engaged "stopping" on the back of a drift when the brattle on which he was standing suddenly gave way and ran into the old workings, which were holed to form the level below and taking him with it buried him up to the shoulders. He lived for some time in this position but died before his comrades were able to extricate him which occupied four hours. At the inquest a verdict of "Accidental Death "was returned. Apparently reasonable precautions had been taken by the men in the level below.

VIAL Samuel (injured) - 1890 - 06/10/1890 – Age 17 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. The lad thoughtlessly put his hand on the balance-bob as he was coming up the man-engine and had three fingers badly bruised between the bob, and the shaft timber.

VICARY R. - 1899 - 30/08/1899 – Age 13 - Collier’s boy. Cwm, Crawshay Bros., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face rock, 8 feet x 4 feet x 2 foot thick, from a slant in the roof. One prop is said to have been under it. Seven feet seam.

VICKERS Andrew (non-fatal) - 1893 - 28/11/1893 – Age 16 - Pony driver. Loanhead, Shotts Iron Co. Edinburgh. Crushed by tubs.

VICKERS Andrew - 1899 - 23/05/1899 – Age 29 – Hewer. Bebside, Bebside Coal Co. Ltd., Bebside, Northumberland. Inquest attended. The deceased had neglected to sprag the jud he was kirving, and a portion of it fell from a sooty parting. There was a plentiful supply of suitable timber close a hand.

VICKERS C. - 1894 - 23/05/1894 – Age 31 – Collier. Thrybergh Hall, J and J Charlesworth, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Died 24th.

VICKERS Charles - 1890 - 24/04/1890 – Age 20 – Haulier. Dinas Steam, Dinas Main Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fell under and crushed by loaded tram having fallen off the shaft.

VICKERS Christy (non-fatal) - 1893 - 23/02/1893 – Age 44 – Fireman. Loanhead, Shotts Iron Co., Edinburgh. Fall of roof 28 days off.

VICKERS George - 1894 - 06/09/1894 – Age 22 – Hewer. West Auckland, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Auckland, Co.Durham. Burnt on arms and face by explosion of gas alleged to have gone past a fence. Died on the 7th instant.

VICKERS James - 1890 - 06/03/1890 – Age 20 – Loader. Bestwood, Bestwood Coal and Iron Coal Co., Nottinghamshire. Attempting to enter the cage, at the pit top, whilst the cage was in motion. He was struck by the cage and fell down the shaft.

VICKERS Thomas - 1893 - 14/09/1893 – Age 64 – Collier. Glyncorrwg, Glyncorrwg Colliery Co., Glyncorrwg, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face (a bell stone 9 feet x 5 feet x 1  inches thick) while filling coal. No props set up. No. 2 Rhondda seam.

VICKERS William - 1891 - 11/11/1891 – Age 14 - Helper up. Etherley, Henry Stobart and Co., Auckland, Co.Durham. Was found dead in the entrance to an adit. Death supposed to have been caused by suffocation from gases but a post-mortem examination revealed that the symptoms were not consistent with gas poisoning and that it probably resulted from syncope caused by over exhaustion while playing at football.

VICKOUSE H. - 1899 - 23/10/1899 – Age 13 - Lamp boy. Manvers Main, Manvers Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. His clothes saturated with oil caught fire at a gas jet. Died 25th Oct.

VIGERS John - 1894 - 11/04/1894 – Age 21 – Engineman. Shelton Rowhurst, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Hanley, Staffordshire. Leg broke by rail slipping off the truck during unloading. Vigers was only looking on.

VIGERS Edward (non-fatal) - 1891 - 28/01/1891 – Age 71 – Overlooker. Devon Great Consols (metalliferous), Devon Great Consols, Tavistock, Devon. He fell down the stairs, leading from the boiler-house to the engine-house, and dislocated his shoulder.

VIGGERS Thomas - 1890 - 13/02/1890 – Age 48 – Collier. Leycett, Harrison and Woodburn, Madeley Coal and Iron Coal Co., Madeley, Staffordshire. Fall of coal from roof in Rough 7 foot Seam.

VILE Samuel Burgess - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 31 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

VINTON William (non-fatal) - 1891 - 17/01/1891 – Age 30 – Miner. Wheal Crebor (metalliferous), Wheal Crebo, Tavistock, Devon. Without awaiting the proper and usual time in the case of a missed shot he was proceeding to the end to ascertain what was wrong and when within 12 feet of the hole it exploded causing him slight injuries. Special Rules one clause of which makes it a criminal offence for anyone to return to a "missed" hole before the lapse of at least an hour have since been established at this mine and must now be enforced by the agents unless they wish to be held responsible themselves.

VIRGO David - 1899 - 22/11/1899 – Age 39 – Collier. Black Vein Drift, Dowlais Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face clod, 5 feet x 1.5 feet x 6 inches thick. While pulling free a slip of coal it fell against and knocked out a prop which had been supporting it. Black seam.

VIZZARD Reuben - 1895 - 19/04/1895 – Age 34 – Hewer. Cowpen ‘Mill’, Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Cowpen, Northumberland. Inspection and inquest attended. Killed by a fall of stone from slips in the roof, in the presence of his marrow, who was close by but was not hurt.

VOBES James - 1895 - 01/08/1895 – Age 42 – Collier. Aberdare Merthyr, Aberdare Merthyr Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp in a stall in the Nine-feet seam. Naked lights used.

VODDEN Charles - 1894 - 20/01/1894 – Age 58 – Miner. High House No. 5 (metalliferous), Fletchers High House Mining Co., Frizington, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. An accident of a very simple character. He was seated on a plank boring, with his feet resting on loose ore. He stood up for some purpose and the plank was displaced. On attempting to sit down again he fell backwards and rolled about 6 feet down a bank of ore. He died the following day.

VOISEY James - 1897 - 09/09/1897 – Age 32 – Policeman. Lee Moor (quarry), Lee Moor China Clay Works. Killed on the 9th September on the self acting incline, in connected with railway belonging to the Lee Moor China Clay Works. They were supposed to have been black-berrying, and were walking down the middle of the railway line when knocked down by the trucks. 2 killed.

VOLE or COLE William Thomas - 1893 - 11/04/1893 – Age 16 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an underground fire. 63 killed.
