A sudden weight came on and the roof fell, many yards in length, 6 feet wide 4 feet thick, in the waste of the working place.

KAY George - 1897 - 09/09/1897 – Age 16 - Asst. fitter. North Skelton (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., North Yorkshire. He was walking on a self acting incline and went into a refuge hole to allow the empty set to pass him. After it passed he came out forgetting about the full set coming down the incline and it caught and killed him.

KAY John - 1892 - 06/10/1892 – Age 48 – Rolleywayman. Cramlington, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Cramlington, Northumberland. Inquest attended. It is surmised that the deceased lost his light and getting confused was caught by the sett running on the incline.

KAY John - 1899 - 05/07/1899 – Age 22 – Hewer. South Garefield, South Garefield Colliery Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was working in a place, about nine feet wide, when a stone six feet in diameter fell from slips. More timber should have been set.

KAY Thomas - 1894 - 02/02/1894 – Age 13 – Drawer. Spindlepoint, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Kersley, Lancashire. Crushed by tubs, he had just put drag behind the last ten tubs, whilst they were being drawn on shunt in down brow. The link, next to the swivel at end of rope broke, tubs ran back 11 yards over the deceased, he had no business being there.
KAY William - 1892 - 10/09/1892 – Age 21 – Collier. Broad Oak, Broad Oak Coal Co., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Having knocked out a sprag from undermined coal he tried to pull the coal down, without resetting the sprag, he was passing in front of the coals when they fell and caught him.

KEAR George - 1892 - 25/01/1892 – Age 57 – Miner. China Iron (metalliferous), Henry Crawshay and Co. Ltd., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. A stone, from the side of the main road or the level where he was engaged repairing, fell unexpectedly and injured him. He was removed to the Gloucester Hospital but died on his way there.

KEARS John A. - 1890 - 04/10/1890 – Age 17 – Putter. Boldon, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Boldon, Co. Durham. Fell down a staple with a tub, 25 yds. 8.15 am.
KEATING John - 1890 - 22/03/1890 – Age 59 – Fitter. Cannock Chase, Cannock Chase Colliery Co., Brownhills, Staffordshire. He accidentally pulled a loose sand box of 8 cwt. from a locomotive engine frame upon himself, and was fatally injured. Private branch railway.
KEELING John - 1895 - 06/02/1895 – Age 55 – Examiner. Timsbury, Samborne Smith and Co., Timsbury, Somerset. A shot, which proved to be over charged with powder, ignited coal dust and thus caused an extensive explosion. The overcharge resulted from an unseen joint lessening the work which it was intended to do. 7 killed. Married with a family.
KEELING Matthew - 1899 - 16/10/1899 - Age 39 – Stallman. Cinderhill, Babbington Coal Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased received a broken leg, in the mine, and was undergoing an operation when he died before the operation was complete. The Coroners jury returned a verdict that ‘he died from the effects of an anaesthetic.’
KEEN James (non-fatal) - 1891 - 20/03/1891 – Age 27 – Labourer. East Pool (metalliferous), East Pool Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. Fell a distance of about nine feet from a tram road, on the surface, injuring his head and back.
KEETON S. - 1890 - 27/09/1890 – Age 37 – Rolleywayman. Thorncliffe, Newton Chambers, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Caught by tub. Died 29th.
KEIGHTLEY A. - 1896 - 20/10/1896 – Age 66 – Byeworker. Middleton, Middleton Estate and Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fell through a hole in pit bank when repairs were in progress.
KEIGHTLEY Isaac - 1893 - 28/02/1893 – Age 15 - Horse driver. West Hallam, Kilburne Coal West Hallam Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Deceased was walking in front of his horse and loaded tubs when the horse stepped on him and threw him down on the roadway. Died 2nd Mar.

KEIR Robert (non-fatal) - 1890 - 16/10/1890 – Miner. Stonelaw, FR Reid, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal.
KEITCH Herbert - 1898 - 26/09/1898 – Age 19 - Stone putter. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co., Ashington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased, along with two stonemen, retired while a shot was fired in a top caunch. On returning one of the stonemen examined the roof and then commenced to clear the stones away. The deceased was standing near when a large stone fell and killed him.
KELL Thomas - 1890 - 06/06/1890 – Age 28 – Hewer. Elemore, Hutton Coal Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Severe injury to back by fall of stone. Died on 28th inst.
KELL Thomas - 1894 - 25/10/1894 – Age 60 – Shifter. Leasingthorne, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Auckland, Co. Durham. Died in the pit from syncope on his way outbye. Ventilation all right.
KELL William - 1898 - 06/01/1898 – Age 50 – Hewer. Littleburn, North Brancepeth Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. After being about two hours in the face of his working place he was found by the putter quite dead. No fall of stone had taken place and the ventilation was good.
KELLETT William H. - 1897 - 31/03/1897 – Age 30 – Shunter. Malton, SA Sadler, Co. Durham. Got his foot fast in switch tongue and an empty wagon passed over it, breaking the ankle. Died on the 9th.
KELLIE William John (non-fatal) - 1892 - 23/09/1892 - Pony driver. Westburn No. 2, Westburn Colliery Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. While jumping off his race his head struck the roof.
KELLING Thomas - 1895 - 01/10/1895 – Age 31 – Collier. Pendleton, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. In working place, when taking out a prop, with short hammer, he stood on a higher side steep place. There was a stone, 4 feet long, known to be loose. When the prop was knocked out the stone fell.
KELLOCHAN John - 1892 - 12/04/1892 – Age 40 – Brusher. Carfin No. 6, William Dixon Ltd., Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on road while he was repairing it.
KELLON William - 1895 - 03/02/1895 – Age 57 – Miner. Wheal Kitty (metalliferous), Wheal Kitty Mining Co., Cornwall. They were engaged in the Vottle shaft, being lowered and raised by means of a hand winch of first and second motion. The men at the winch, finding them too heavy to raise on first motion, were changing to the second and in doing so omitted to fasten the drum. The rope became released and the deceased, who were hanging on it, were precipitated down the shaft. A winch of this description, for such work, is not satisfactory. 2 killed.
KELLOW James - 1896 - 22/10/1896 – Age 65 – Quarryman. Old Deiabole Slate (quarry), Old Deiabole Slate Co., Cornwall. They went from their working place, some 200 or 300 yards away, out of curiosity, and were standing on a large area of ground, which by observation of the cracks it was known to be on the move and from which the tools had been removed that morning. It suddenly fell away carrying them with it to a depth of 40 feet. The cracks had been watched for several days previous to the accident and clearly showed, if reasonably considered, that the place was dangerous, although not treated so by the officials or men. 2 killed.

KELLY Benjamin - 1892 - 10/03/1892 – Age 19. Trailer Park (metalliferous), Barrow Haematite Steel Co. Ltd., Dalton, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was caging bogies, at an eye in the shaft, and after taking an empty one from the cage was returning with a full one when he and the bogie fell down the shaft, the cage having been removed.
KELLY Daniel (non-fatal) - 1892 - 06/04/1892 – Age 41 – Collier. Cowdenbeath, Cowdenbeath Coal Co., Fife. Fall of stone. 162 days off.
KELLY Edward - 1891 - 28/09/1891 – Age 45 – Dataler. The Park, J and R Stone, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased and another man were ordered to chip the roof, for two bars, where it was too low, and were told to set props before proceeding to cut the roof but did not do so, and the roof fell upon the deceased who was the leading man. 4.0 am.
KELLY Edward - 1898 - 05/11/1898 – Age 50 – Quarryman. Bwlchgwyn Quarry, Bwlchgwyn Road Stone Co. Ltd., Denbigh. While he was working on a ledge, 14 feet wide, he somehow went over the edge and had a fall of 19 feet, fractured his skull. Died 9th.

KELLY Frederick - 1896 - 05/06/1896 – Age 28 – Carpenter. Foxdale Lead, Isle of Man Lead Mining Co. Ltd., Isle of Man. He inadvertently put his head over the fence of a shaft, near which he was working, and was struck by the skip. Killed on the spot.

KELLY James (non-fatal) - 1891 - 21/01/1891 – Age 48 – Miner. Phoenix United (metalliferous), Phoenix United Mining Co., Liskeard, Cornwall. A ladder on which he was engaged, taking down, sonic ground slipped and caused him to fall about 10 feet resulting in slight injuries to his back and left shoulder.

KELLY John - 1890 - 05/01/1890 – Age 22 – Miner. Postlethwaites (metalliferous), Postlethwaite's Eskett Mining Co., Eskett. Unramming a shot. He was boring out a shot, that had missed fire, when the charge exploded causing injuries which proved fatal on 10th Jan.
KELLY John - 1899 - 11/05/1899 – Age 53 – Sinker. Dysart, Earl of Rosslyn’s Collieries Ltd., Fife. The shaft was being re-sunk from the level of the Dysart Main coal seam. Deceased, and two other sinkers, descended on the cage to the Dysart Main coal bottom and while one of the men was preparing to fix the kettle rope, the winding rope, in order to descend to a bucket door of pump 11 fathoms below the deceased walked into the shaft and fell into the water 23 fathoms below. To reach the body grappling irons had to be used. No reason could be assigned for deceased’s conduct. The temporary fence had been removed immediately before.

KELLY Michael - 1896 - 31/08/1896 – Age 25 – Hewer. Wearmouth, A. Wearmouth Coal Co. Ltd., Wearmouth, Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. A sudden fall of roof took place in the brokens knocking out several props and crushing the deceased. His marrow was there at the time and the deputy had only been out of the place five minutes after having timbered up.

KELLY Robert - 1897 - 10/05/1897. Snaefell Lead, Snaefell Lead Mining Co. Ltd., Isle of Man. On descending the shaft, to go to their work on a Monday morning, they were overcome by carbonic oxide generated by an underground fire, of which they were wholly unaware. The timber in a level had taken fire accidentally, probably from a lighted candle end stuck up against it on the previous Saturday. 19 killed and 5 injured of whom 1 died, 26th May.
KELLY Thomas - 1894 - 05/01/1894 – Age 29 – Dataler. Ubberley, Chatterley Whitfield Collieries Ltd., Bucknall, Staffordshire. Fall of roof in engine dip during repairs.
KELLY Thomas - 1896 - 22/08/1896 – Age 16 - Horse driver. Markham No. 1, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Derbyshire. He received a slight injury at the mine on 25th February but died from "consumption" six months afterwards. No inquest was held.
KELLY Thomas - 1897 - 30/11/1897 – Age 41 – Dataller. Abram, Abram Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased, with others, was assisting to put some tubs on the rails in the endless rope haulage brow, and when the jigger started the rope the deceased tried to pull one of the tubs sideways to get it on the rails when he somehow got entangled and fatally crushed. There were two low bars at the place which were the chief cause of the accident.
KELLY Thomas - 1899 - 14/12/1899 – Age 37 – Stoneman. Trudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. He was preparing to timber the roof behind a canch he was taking down, when a large stone fell away at a slip and caught and killed him.
KELLY William (non-fatal) - 1891 - 02/04/1891 – Age 18 – Drawer. Mosside, Gavin Paul and Sons, Linlithgow. Fall of roof. 8 days off.
KELLY William - 1895 - 22/05/1895 – Age 18 – Ponydriver. Golborne, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Golborne, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was run over by a run away tub on the engine plane, dipping 1 in 3. He was waiting for the next gang and had turned the points for the journey. The gang rider stated the lad must have lost his light as his safety-lamp was found extinguished on the side of the roadway, some distance away on the lower side of the place where the tub ran over him.
KELLY William - 1899 - 17/03/1899 – Age 69 – Miner. Foxdale Lead Ore, Isle of Man Mining Co. Ltd., Isle of Man. A stone fell unexpectedly, from a place over him, and caused him to fall down the ore pass to a depth of 45 feet. Killed instantly.
KELSALL James - 1890 - 27/10/1890 – Age 41 – Collier. Sneyd, Sneyd Colliery and Brickworks Co. Ltd., Burslem, Staffordshire. A shot of tonite exploded while he was unramining it.
KELSHAW William - 1898 - 03/10/1898 – Age 34 – Roadman. Nook, Astley & Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Crushed by tub, being improperly moved on endless rope haulage road. Road too low in height, want of room.
KEMP George - 1898 - 14/10/1898 – Age 41 – Labourer. Chilmington No. 1, Limestone Quarry, JT Adams, Kent. While he was undermining the overburden consisting of sand, clay, loam and clay a portion fell suddenly on him. Internal injuries. Died next day.
KEMP James (non-fatal) - 1891 - 10/12/1891 – Age 19 – Miner. Holmbush (metalliferous), Callington United Mines Ltd., Callington, Cornwall. While engaged in the 120-fathom level of the "Flapack" lode, boring a hole a little to one side of a stone, which he and his comrades had failed to get down and which they left, as being safe, it dropped out and caught his feet breaking one and cutting the other.
KEMP John - 1893 - 04/03/1893 – Age 20 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mine Adventurers, Camborne, Cornwall. While engaged on a staging in the New East Shaft repairing the skip road at the 100-fathom level, he appears to have overbalanced and fallen away to the 125-fathom level where his dead body was found.
KEMP Samuel (injured) - 1890 - 15/01/1890 – Age 25 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Kemp was ascending to the surface using his the man engine and when at the 40-fathom level the sollar above him gave away and struck his light out and thus causing him to miss the next step, consequently he was caught by the engine and received injuries to his side and a finger which afterwards had to be amputated. Owing to the recent fire in this mine water had been turned into the man engine shaft and allowed to flow for several days. This had washed out the gravel etc., from round the joints of the sollars and working parts, so caused a certain amount of looseness, which the men in charge were engaged in repairing. In this case one of the lining boards had got loose and on the up stroke of the engine it came in contact with the sollar, knocking it out of its place.

KENAN John (non-fatal) - 1892 - 09/08/1892 – Miner. Douglas Park No. 1, Wilsons and Clyde Coal Co., Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal at stoops.
KENDALL Thomas - 1890 - 31/01/1890 – Age 19 – Drawer. Newton No. 2, Trencherbone Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Clifton, Lancashire. Died at the entrance to Manchester Infirmary, from his injury by roof, from between the chocks and the face of coal.
KENNAUGH John - 1892 - 09/02/1892 – Age 48 - Kibble filler. Reshen (metalliferous). The deceased and three other men were at a winch lowering a chain down a shaft. The chain was in two parts, joined by a screw shackle, and at the time of the accident it had no load on it. The shackle appears to have caught, for a few moments, on a board at the adit level and then to have slipped off causing a sudden jerk upon the winch and the handles move round half a turn. The deceased was struck on the head by one of the handles which was jerked out of his grip. His skull was fractured and he died in the course of 20 minutes.

KENNELEY John - 1898 - 22/03/1898 – Age 68 - Salt boiler. Walney Salt Works, Barrow Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Whilst lifting salt from the pans he dropped his ladle and in reaching to recover it he fell into the hot brine. Died 27th March.
KENNET or JONES Henry - 1890 - 20/09/1890 – Age 27 - Fan engineman. Plymouth Works, Plymouth Works Mortgagees, Merthyr, Glamorgan. He stopped the fan engine on the Saturday night, to make some small repairs to it. When done the engine being "on centre” he went into the fan chamber to move the fan round a little by getting on the blade and not having opened the cocks to drain the cylinder of steam the fan revolved quickly and he was drawn in and crushed.

On jumping off, to reach the brake, he stumbled and was caught by the wheel guard and pulled in before the wheels, three of which passed over him.

While about to reset an arm, which had slipped out of the notch, the collar gave way and in retreating he was struck either by the collar or a stone which fell along with it. While taking down a rock it slipped and caught deceased against the foot wall killing him instantly. The ground which came away was sounded by Kent and considered safe before he started work.

The deceased was in the act of drawing a tail rope down past the endless rope, far end haulage sheave, with his hand on the haulage rope, when he was drawn into the sheave and was crushed.

He was assisting the wagon drawer in pushing a wagon, and after doing so the plunger of the spring buffer which had stuck fast, sprang out striking him on the temple causing such injuries that he succumbed on the 10th.

KERVING Thomas - 1894 - 01/09/1894 – Age 60 – Miner. Postlethwaite’s Eskett (metalliferous), Postlethwaite Eskett Mining Co., Winder, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. A piece of tough shale fell from the side, without warning, and rolled over on the deceased who was filling ore. The working place had been inspected, by two different officials, between the men leaving the previous day and their return on the morning of the accident.
KESSEL James (injured) - 1890 - 20/03/1890 – Age 15 – Miner. Tolgullow United (metalliferous), Tributers and Halvaners &c., St. Day, Cornwall. The lad was engaged in wheeling stuff through the adit level to the plat, when it is supposed a short Board, over which he had to pass, slipped from behind him and he fall a distance of about 6 fathoms, sustaining a severe shock and some personal injury but not of a serious nature.
KESTERVAN James - 1897 - 31/03/1897 - Age 32 – Collier. Silverdale No. 6, Butterley Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Injured by a fall of roof coal, at his working place, in the ten feet seam. The injury was not considered serious and was not reported. He died from the effects on the 18th Nov. 1897.

Deceased slipped and fell into balanced drop cage, at the moment he had released the break lever for it to descend, and was killed by the top cross-bar crushing him against the platform.

KIDD James - 1896 - 31/10/1896 – Age 52 – Blacksmith. Southfield, William Black and Sons Ltd., Stirling. Deceased was replacing a bolt, underneath a waggon which stood among some others in a siding near to the pit. A train of empty waggons pushed into the siding, buffered against those already there and before the deceased could get out of the way he sustained injuries to which he succumbed 18 days afterwards.

KILNER William - 1890 - 18/06/1890 - 46 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). Unexpected fall of a piece of rock from half to three quarters of a ton from the side of the chamber in which he was working. The rock fell from a height of about 24 feet.
KING Alfred - 1893 - 06/06/1893 – Age 28 – Miner. Stank No. 7 (metalliferous), Barrow Haematite Steel Co. Ltd., Stank, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Fall of rock, some pieces of rock fell from the roof and sides of the working place on to the deceased, causing injuries which terminated fatally in a few minutes. It was elicited at the inquest that no examination had been made by any official either during this or the preceding shift. Had this been done the accident might have been prevented.

KING George - 1896 - 06/11/1896 – Age 32 – Collier. Bedwellty, Monmouth. Died suddenly from a paralytic stroke, being seized in the trains. He was conveyed home but died a two hours after. Not comprised under the Act.
KING Henry - 1895 - 20/08/1895 – Age 21 – Loader. Albert Derbyshire, Silkstone Colliery Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Fall of side pushing deceased against a pack and fatally crushing him.
KING Hugh - 1892 - 26/10/1892 – Age 36 – Miner. Cramlington, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Cramlington, Northumberland. Inquest attended. The deceased was riding in a set of tubs, up an incline, when something gave way and the tubs moving backwards ran off the rails and King was found injured in a refuge hole. The coupling shackle had given way and when afterward examined it was found that the bolt was too small for the hole and it had been imperfectly riveted. The result was that the riveted part of the bolt had become so small as to be able to pass through the hole in the shackle. If the shackle had been properly examined, by the person appointed for the purpose, its condition would have been seen and there was gross carelessness on his part in omitting to do so especially as men were in the habit of riding on the set. Died March 17th, 1893.

While deceased and another pitman were riding on an H-piece, which was being raised up a staple pit by means of two ropes, one of the ropes broke and in falling dragged deceased off and killed him.
KING Joseph - 1896 - 23/06/1896 – Age 51 – Dayman. Silver Hill, Stanton Iron Works, Nottinghamshire. Fall of side. Deceased was building a gate-end pack and had taken the lip of the roadway too far beyond the edge of the pack leaving the side unsupported. A piece of rock fell on him before he had completed building the pack wall. He died the same day.
KING Joseph - 1898 - 19/04/1898 – Age 30 – Stallman. Whitwick No. 5, Whitwick Colliery Co., Leicester. A fire broke out on the main airway of the mine and developed so rapidly that only six men, including the deputy, out of a total of 41 who were at work beyond the fire were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.
KING Lott - 1896 - 12/12/1896 – Labourer. Rolleston Sand (quarry), Rolleston Estate, Wiltshire. When getting sand from under a large boulder, part of it fell from a joint, and crushed him causing immediate death.

KINGSFORD Charles Hugh - 1890 - 25/11/1890 – Age 22 – Student. Polyear (metalliferous), Polyear Mining Co., St. Austell, Cornwall. Deceased was a young gentleman who had, for some time, been at Polycar studying mining. On the morning of the accident he was engaged with his comrade, a son of the mine agent, boring a hole in the lode at the 40-fathom level when a piece of ground fell from the back of the level and caught Mr. Kingsford. His injuries were of a severe nature but they did not prove fatal until eight days after the accident. Evidence was given at the inquest showing that every care was taken to secure the ground and two experienced miners who were present sounded and examined it thoroughly before the young men started boring when it was considered quite safe. It was seen after the accident that the rock which fell came off at a "Soapy', head.
KINGSTON James - 1896 - 01/05/1896 – Age 34 – Labourer. Gnwch, grit (quarry), Birmingham Corporation, Brecon. An iron nut fell from his boring machine, into the hole which was being drilled. Not being able to extract it he thought he would blow it out with some gunpowder and after inserting a fuse powder, into the hole, but he did not cover it in any way while striking a match to ignite the fuse, he let the fuse, by mischance, into the hole and fired the powder. He died 6th May from the injuries.
