O’BRIEN George (non-fatal) - 1892 - 26/05/1892 - Pony driver. Rosehall No. 7, Robert Addie and Sons, Bellshill, Lanarkshire. Fell in front of his race and was run over.

O’BRIEN George - 1899 - 17/04/1899 – Age 21 – Brusher. Viewpark, R Addie and Sons Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at road head while putting in a building.

O’BRIEN James - 1898 - 09/05/1898 – Age 33 – Dataller. Moss No. 6, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was engaged building pack walls on the side of the roadway, when a portion of top coal and dirt fell upon him from between a slip and a break running parallel with the roadway.

O’BRIEN Matthew (non-fatal) - 1892 - 01/02/1892 – Brusher. Clydeside No. 1, Glasgow Iron and Steel Co., Uddingston, Lanarkshire. Explosion of compressed powder in shot hole while attempting to break it up with jumper. 3 injured.

O’BRIEN Michael - 1898 - 08/09/1898 – Age 61 – Wasteman. Hebburn, Wallsend and Hebburn Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was coming out-bye at the close of his shift and as he was crossing over the shaft siding he was knocked down by some full tubs and crushed between them and the side.

O’CONNER C. - 1894 - 16/07/1894 – Age 30 – Stoker. Gelli, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Ystrad, Glamorgan. Crushed by a tram of coal which was being lowered down a short incline to the underground boilers while he was standing in the road in front of one of them.

O’CONNER Michael - 1895 - 03/01/1895 – Age 29 – Collier. Cwm, Crawshay Bros. Cyfartha Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of rippings at face from 3 to 8 foot side 8 foot long, from 4 to 10 inches thick, weakened by a change from fireclay to clift with a smooth parting between. Two props discharged, Five feet six seam.

O’CONNOR Thomas - 1895 - 23/04/1895 – Age 42 – Quarryman. North Vennal (quarry), Robert Muir, Lanarkshire. Stone gave way and he fell from face of quarry.

O’DONALD C. - 1891 - 29/11/1891 – Age 16 – Driver. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Alleged to have sprained himself on the 17th instant but death was certified to be from peritonitis there being no trace of an accident.

O’DONNELL Michael - 1891 - 14/11/1891 – Age 41 – Labourer. Boldon, Harton Coal Co., Boldon, Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was pinching a large stone near the screens and did not notice the waggons were being moved and was knocked in front of them and run over. 10.45 am.

O’HARA Andrew - 1899 - 21/03/1899 – Age 38 – Miner. Camp No. 1, Camp Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. He was about to fire two shots of compressed gunpowder. He lit the fuse of one but the fuse of the other didn’t seem to ignite however he had to retire. On returning, after one shot went, the other went off also.

O’KEEF Nicol - 1896 - 15/12/1896 – Age 22 – Hewer. Newborough, Radcliffe Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inquiries made. He was injured by a fall of stone from between two slips, and died on the 21st of December.

O’LEARY Thomas - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 17 - Door boy. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

O’MARA Patrick - 1898 - 19/04/1898 – Age 45 – Stallman. Whitwick No. 5, Whitwick Colliery Co. Leicester. A fire broke out on the main airway of the mine and developed so rapidly that only six men, including the deputy, out of a total of 41, who were at work beyond the fire, were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.

O’NEIL Charles - 1896 - 18/07/1896 – Age 16 – Driver. Ravesworth, Charles Perkin and Co., Ravesworth, Co.Durham. Inquest attended. He was injured fall of coal and stone whilst standing near some men working in a roadway. Died 16th Nov.

O’NEIL Frances - 1897 - 18/01/1897 – Age 16 - Pony driver. Common No. 14, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Found dead below a race of hutches which he was bringing out along a level.

O’NEIL Frederick - 1890 - 17/02/1890 – Age 25 – Bricklayer. Edmondsley, Edmondsley Coal Co., Chester-le-Street, Co.Durham. Fell off a scaffold while raising some timber on to the top of a house. Not comprised.

O’NEIL Joseph (injured) - 1890 – 25/08/1890 – Miner. Annagher No. 3, Ulster Fireclay Works Co., Coalisland, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. Slightly burned by firedamp which exploded at their candles on cutting through into old workings. 2 injured.

O’NEIL Patrick (non-fatal) - 1890 - 18/10/1890 – Miner. North, Motherwell No. 3, Merry and Cuninghame, Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp while lighting a shot. 2 injured.

O’NEIL Peter (non-fatal) - 1890 – 30/01/1890 – Miner. Wellshot No. 1, David G Dunn, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Injured by a shot blowing through from the bottom of a blind pit while they were in a drift below it. 2 injured.

O’NEILL Francis (non-fatal) - 1894 – 16/04/1894 – Age 19 – Miner. Dewshill, Coltness Iron Co., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

O’PRAY John - 1891 – 13/02/1891 – Age 42 – Labourer. No. 4 Jacktrees (metalliferous), Carron Iron Co., Cleator Moor, Cumberland. The piece of stone, which fell, was known to be bad two days previous to the accident. This occurred through gross negligence on the part of the officials in allowing the deceased to work under this dangerous stone. Inspection made and inquest attended. 10.30 am.

O’SHEA Daniel - 1893 – 11/04/1893 – Age 16 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an underground fire. 63 killed.

O’SHEA John - 1899 – 12/10/1899 – Age 28 – Engineman. Great Western Hetty, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck by a portion of the flywheel of a hauling engine. The flywheel which was 10 foot diameter was known to have had two flaws in it and it broke while making about 100 revolutions per minute.

OAKELEY Thomas - 1896 – 30/04/1896 – Age 50. Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.

OAKELY W. - 1891 – 08/12/1891 – Age 30 – Collier. Wheldale, Wheldale Coal Co., Castleford, Yorkshire. Fire in engine plane. 5 killed.

OAKES James - 1892 – 28/08/1892 – Age 32 – Labourer. Abram, Abram Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased got crushed between two spring buffers of railway waggons, near the screens, while attempting to pass between them.

OAKES John (injured) - 1894 – 05/01/1894 – Age 16 – Asst. driver. Biddulph Valley Havelock, R Heath and Sons, Tunstall, Staffordshire. Leg broken by being run over by tubs drawn by a horse owing to another boy trying to put lockers in.

OAKES Joseph - 1897 – 23/08/1897 – Age 50 – Dataller. Crawford No. 1, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was making a new airway and had set a row of props on each side of the roadway and after boring a hole, to blow the roof down, he commenced knocking out the middle props when the roof fell on him before he could clear himself.

OAKES Thomas - 1898 – 15/06/1898 – Age 62 – Manager. Stonehouse, John Scowcroft and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inquiry made and inquest attended. He was knocking a prop out, from under some dirt near the face of coal, the dirt caught the prop as it was falling causing the prop to strike his arm. Erysipelas afterwards set in then syncope, from which he died.

OAKLEY William - 1891 – 02/04/1891 – Age 19 – Loader. Apedale Sladderhill, Midland Coal Coke and Iron Co. Ltd., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion. 10 killed.

OAKLEY William - 1896 – 12/08/1896 – Age 46 – Pikeman. Goscote Hall, Starkey Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of rock, roof displacing timber.

OAKS Felix - 1890 - 26/09/1890 – Age 46 – Bottomer. Cadzow, Cadzow Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Crushed by cage. 11.30 am.

OATES Arthur - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 18 – Coombs. ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 139 killed.

OATES Edward - 1891 - 12/05/1891 – Age 22 – Engineman. New Copley, Woodland Coal Co. Ltd., Cockfield, Co.Durham. Was found dead beside an under ground pumping engine, supposed to have been caught by the crank while oiling. 4.0 pm.

OATES Fred - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 15. Coombs, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 139 killed.

OATES James - 1896 - 19/10/1896 – Age 22 – Loader. New London, Digby Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased was in the act of picking up a small piece of coal when he fell over and died. The verdict of the coroner's jury was to the effect that he died of "heart disease.".

OATES John - 1890 - 03/02/1890 – Age 36 – Miner. No. 5 (metalliferous), John Stirling, Cleator Moor, Cumberland. Fall of iron ore. This accident occurred in a very high working. At the inquest evidence was given that this portion of the roof had not been examined for several days before the accident occurred, the excuse of the officials being that the roof was awkward to get at.

OATES Sidney M. - 1898 - 18/10/1898 – Age 14 - Collier boy. Castle, Crawshay Bros. Cyfartha Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face following a fall of side (coal). Roof appeared to have been fairly well timbered and coal spragged. Four feet seam.

OATES Thomas jnr. - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Age 20 – Collier. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

OATLEY James - 1890 - 14/02/1890 – Age 30 – Miner. Cook’s Kitchen (metalliferous), Cook’s Kitchen, Camborne, Cornwall. In this mine the skip is used for conveying the men from the bottom of the engine shaft to the 234 level. Thence they go to the main engine shaft and thus proceed to the surface. On this morning the deceased and his comrade joined the skip at the 880 level but the skip was too full to admit, Oatley getting sufficiently far down to be safe although he was not aware of this fact when he got on and consequently he was between the 270 and 234 levels, thrown into the shaft owing to the stretching of the rope. He was found at the 270 level and conveyed to surface within half an hour after the accident but whilst being conveyed to the Miners' Hospital he died. There was a rule, that only six men should ride in the skip at one time but since the accident rules have been specially printed setting forth the duties and obligations of the men in reference to riding in the skip and a responsible man is now in charge of each core to see that these rules are observed.

ODGERS Simon William (injured) - 1890 - 14/04/1890 – Age 17 – Miner. Wheal Basset (metalliferous), Wheal Basset Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Working on a stage, holding the drill to his comrade and on taking it out of the hole he lost his balance and fell off the stage. Injuries not serious.

ODGERS William (injured) - 1890 - 15/02/1890 – Age 22 – Miner. West Basset (metalliferous), West Basset Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Had his arm broken by a blow from a mallet. He was turning a borer to his comrade who accidentally missed it and struck the man's arm.

ODY Frank - 1897 - 12/02/1897 – Age 29 – Labourer. Works Warmley (quarry), Warmley Brick and Tile Co., Gloucester. A fall of ground, where he and others were engaged getting brick clay, killed this man and injured another. The clay was over hanging and came from a joint or slip. Special rules had not been established.

OGDEN George - 1891 - 03/03/1891 – Age 31 – Metalman. Arley, Executors of Col. Hargreaves, Over Hulton, Lancashire. Killed by roof which he was dressing to make a roadway. Inspection and inquest attended.

OGDEN W. - 1893 - 12/01/1893 – Age 26 – Stallman. Orgreave, Rother Vale Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of coal. 2 killed.

OGILVIE Peter (non-fatal) - 1891 - 28/07/1891 – Age 49 – Boggier. Loganlea, John McCulloch, Edinburgh. Fall of stone.

OGILVY David (non-fatal) - 1892 - 04/11/1892 – Miner. Dalziel No. 3, John McAndrew and Co., Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal.

OGLE J. - 1897 - 15/03/1897 – Age 30 – Shunter. Barrow, Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Yorkshire. Run over by waggon.

OLAMAN John George - 1898 - 31/03/1898 – Age 30 – Blacksmith. Sherburn Hill, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Died today from injuries received while working at a cage on the surface on March 19th, 1897.

OLD William - 1894 - 10/01/1894 – Age 37 – Stoneman. Holmside, Thomas Hedley and Bros., Chester-le-Street, Co.Durham. Fall of side stone while timbering a gateway.

OLDFIELD Edward - 1891 - 11/05/1891 – Age 21 – Filler. Ffrwd, James Sparrow and Sons, Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended He got on the trains to ride and came in contact with a pulley. Witnesses said it was well known that no one was allowed to ride. 1.30 pm.

OLDFIELD Edward - 1899 - 21/04/1899 – Age 37 - Engine driver. Ashton Vale, Frayne’s Ashton Vale Iron Co. Ltd., Somerset. Was found in the fly-wheel pit of winding engine, with his head severely injured, the just emptied water tank having been overwound and drawn into the engine house.

OLDFIELD J. - 1890 - 23/12/1890 – Age 28 – Collier. Woodthorpe, N Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of stone. Died 30th.

OLDFIELD J. - 1895 - 21/02/1895 – Age 15 – Driver. Cadeby Main, Denby and Cadeby Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Run over by Corves on an inclined plane.

OLDHAM William (injured) - 1891 - 17/07/1891 – Age 12 – Gigger. Roger, Dukinfield Coal and Cannel Co., Haughton, Lancashire. Injured by roof falling, hearing it coming he was caught in getting away. Inspection and inquiry.

OLDING Albert - 1896 - 27/01/1896 – Age 20 – Collier. Ferndale Nos 7 & 8, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 57 killed.

OLDROYD D. - 1898 - 19/08/1898 – Age 44 – Collier. Foxholes, W Wood and Sons, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

OLDROYD W. - 1890 - 28/02/1890 – Age 23 – Collier. Nostell, Lord St Oswald, Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of stone.

OLDS John - 1893 - 10/01/1893 – Age 25 – Miner. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), Thomas Bolitho Sons and Others, St. Just, Cornwall. Irruption of water from Old Wheal Drea workings which belong to the same mine. The plan being inaccurate misled the agent as regards the relative position of the workings. 20 killed.

OLIVE Edmund - 1895 - 25/04/1895 – Age 50 – Collier. Allens Green, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. In working place want of props feet from prop to face, fall 6 yards long.

OLIVE Nathan - 1892 - 10/08/1892 – Age 47 – Collier. Whittaker Bridge, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Radcliffe, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place from slip unseen, 2 foot square, 7 inches thick.

OLIVE Ralph (injured) - 1891 - 14/12/1891 – Age 45 – Miner. Ladyshore, John Fletcher, Little Lever, Lancashire. Legs broken by coal from a slip. Inspection and inquiry.

OLIVER A. - 1896 - 06/11/1896 – Age 50 – Enginewright. South Hindley, H Musgrave, Yorkshire. Run over by Corves on engine plane.

OLIVER Charles - 1898 - 26/10/1898 – Age 34 – Collier. Universal, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side top coal, 6 foot long, 2 foot wide, 2.5 foot thick, from a face slip after the sprags had been removed. Upper seam.

OLIVER Edward - 1896 - 05/08/1896 – Age 38 - Loco. Shunter. Bowden Close, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. He had put a truck into a siding and was afterwards passing with a load of trucks and was getting off them at the wrong side and was crushed between the track in the siding and the others. Died the following day.

OLIVER G. - 1896 - 30/09/1896 – Age 49 – Collier. Snydale, Rhodes and Dalby, Yorkshire. Strained himself when lifting corf. Died 5th Oct.

OLIVER James - 1897 - 06/05/1897 – Age 42 – Waterman. East Hetton, Walter Scott Ltd., Co.Durham. Inundation of water in Cassop way of Harvey seam owing to working holing into old workings in Cassop Colliery. 10 killed.

OLIVER John - 1893 - 08/02/1893 – Age 45 – Pikeman. Woodside, Cochrane and Co., Dudley, Worcestershire. Run down shaft in cage into sump. Of Bell Street, Pensnett. 3 killed.

OLIVER John - 1897 - 10/05/1897. Snaefell Lead, Snaefell Lead Mining Co. Ltd., Isle of Man. On descending the shaft to go to their work on a Monday morning, they were overcome by carbonic oxide generated by an underground fire, of which they were wholly unaware. The timber in a level had taken fire accidentally, probably from a lighted candle end stuck up against it on the previous Saturday. 19 killed and 5 injured of whom 1 died 26th May.

OLIVER John - 1899 - 07/08/1899 – Age 33 - Masons labourer. Holmside, Thomas Hedley and Bros., Co.Durham. He went up a scaffold, round an engine house, when under the influence of drink and lost his footing and fell a distance of 46 feet to the ground. Died on the 9th inst.

OLIVER John James - 1897 - 10/05/1897. Snaefell Lead, Snaefell Lead Mining Co. Ltd., Isle of Man. On descending the shaft, to go to their work on a Monday morning, they were overcome by carbonic oxide generated by an underground fire, of which they were wholly unaware. The timber in a level had taken fire accidentally, probably from a lighted candle end stuck up against it on the previous Saturday. 19 killed and 5 injured of whom 1 died 26th May.

OLIVER Richard (injured) - 1894 - 27/11/1894 – Age 49 – Getter. Madeley Court No. 7, Madeley Court Co., Madeley, Shropshire. Fall of roof while examining after a shot at working face Best Coal. Dawley was cut on his head and face and bruised on his back. Oliver's arm was broken. 2 injured.

OLIVER Robert - 1896 - 20/03/1896 – Age 14 – Screener. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co., Ashington, Northumberland. Inspection made. He was on the jigging plane and missing his footing, he fell in the Cog wheels. He had no business to be in the place at that time.

OLIVER Septimus - 1895 - 28/09/1895 – Age 28 – Sinker. Hazelrigg, Burradon and Coxlodge Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection and inquest attended. The accident was due to a mistake on the part of the engineman who lowered the kibble on to the deceased, who was at work on the scaffold fixing it at one side of the pit. The engineman stated that he thought the signal to lower to the scaffold had been give, and had lowered accordingly whereas the chargeman waiter-on said that no such signal had been given.

OLIVER Thomas - 1897 - 31/12/1897 – Age 70 – Labourer. Cliffe Limestone (quarry), Clay Cross Co., Derbyshire. Deceased had turned the points to allow six full waggons to pass. Hs appears to have been caught by one of the wagons and run over. He died the same day.

OLIVER William - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 55 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

ONION Arthur - 1897 - 12/03/1897 - Age 19 - Carter. Clay Cross, Clay Cross Colliery Co., Derbyshire. He was run over by the Colliery locomotive. Deceased appears to have strayed upon the railway.

ONIONS Isaiah - 1892 - 11/01/1892 – Age 49 – Stallman. Granville Eureka Seam, Granville Colliery Co., Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Fall of coal. Holing sprags gave way and allowed the coals to fall upon the deceased whilst he sat working under them. Died January 13th.

OPENSHAW John - 1892 - 23/09/1892 – Age 52 – Dataller. Bradley Fold, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Little Lever, Lancashire. In working place, cleaning up old fall pieces overhanging, allowed to remain so until it fell.

OPENSHAW Simeon (injured) - 1891 - 14/01/1891 – Age 56 – Miner. Brackley, Bridgewater Trustees, Middle Hulton, Lancashire. Injured by falling about nine feet into the entrance to engine brow tunnel, he having in the dark climbed the fence rails. Inspection and inquiry.

OPIE Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 02/06/1890 – Age 28 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft, Carn Brea, Cornwall. Opie was engaged in working in a stope in the bottom of the 234 level. A chain attached to a peg was used for getting down and up the stope and a part of this peg, it appears, got broken by some blasting which had been done in its vicinity, with the result that when the man took hold of the chain, in order to descend, it slipped and he was precipitated to the bottom. His injuries were of a minor character.

OPIE William (injured) - 1890 - 19/02/1890 – Age 18 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. Opie was engaged in tramming and got into the pass, to clear the stuff down into the waggon, when the stuff came away with a rush some of the stones striking him on the head and legs causing slight injuries.

ORAM Thomas - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 18 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

ORCHARD Bennett (non-fatal) - 1894 - 24/08/1894 – Age 35 – Shaftsman. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mine Adventurers, Illogan, Cornwall. Fell from ladders.

ORCHARD John - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 43 – Collier. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

ORKNEY Alexander - 1891 - 24/09/1891 – Age 34 – Hewer. Seaton Burn, J Bowes and Partners Ltd., Seaton Burn, Northumberland. Inquest attended. Fall of coal. Deceased neglected to set sprags to support the coal while he was kirving under it. 10 am.

ORMAND S.M. - 1896 - 07/12/1896 – Age 34 - Asst. timberman. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fall on road clift while repairing. Died 10th December.

ORME A. - 1899 - 19/04/1899 – Age 40 – Collier. Wharncliffe, Grayson Lowood and Co., Yorkshire. Explosion while stemming a shot of gelatine dynamite.

ORMISTON W.J. (non-fatal) - 1890 - 30/05/1890 – Age 30 – Engineer. Hermand, Hermand Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Fingers torn off by pinion wheel. 56 days off.

ORPIE Thomas - 1892 - 04/05/1892 – Age 15 - Miners boy. East Pool, East Pool Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. A small stone fell from the level above and struck him on the head while working in a stope.

ORR D.D. Roach - 1897 - 19/02/1897 – Age 46 – Hewer. Murton, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Severely injured about arm, chest, and internally. He was jumping off a set of empty wagons, on which he had been riding, and his coat caught and he was dragged off and run over. Died the following day.

ORR James (non-fatal) - 1892 - 03/02/1892 – Age 28 – Drawer. Pencuik, Shotts Iron Co., Edinburgh. Fall of coal.

ORR John (non-fatal) - 1890 - 20/01/1890 - Pony driver. Overjohnstone No. 2, Lord Belhaven’s Trustee, Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on drawing road.

ORR John - 1898 - 15/08/1898 – Age 22 – Miner. Climpy, Climpy Coal Co., Lanarkshire. Deceased, and his brother, were engaged 'winning’ out inside a hitch and while holing the coal the roof suddenly fell out from between two parallel lypes and injured the spine. He died 8th January, 1898.

ORWIN George - 1899 - 17/02/1899 – Age 32 – Dataller. Glapwell, Sheepbridge Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Fall of roof while deceased was preparing to take down the roof of a low place in the main roadway.

OSBORN Samuel - 1896 - 01/07/1896 – Age 60 – Mason. Ham Hill (quarry), Dorset. Died suddenly on the 1st July when at work. He was on a scaffold and is supposed to have had a fit and to have fallen on to another scaffold 3 foot 6  inches below. This case is not connected with works which come under my supervision in any shape or form but was reported to me by the company who employed him. Not comprised.

OSBORNE E. - 1898 - 16/04/1898 – Age 63 – Shunter. Monk Bretton, Monk Bretton Coal Co., Yorkshire. When moving waggons under the screens he was crushed between an axle bar and an upright.

OSBORNE James (non-fatal) - 1893 - 17/01/1893 – Age 19 – Pitman. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mine Adventurers, Camborne, Cornwall. Fall of loose stone from the side of the main engine shaft, while repairing the timber. 3 injured.

OSBORNE John - 1890 - 05/07/1890 – Age 39 - Boiler minder. Hebburn, C Tyne Coal Co. Ltd., Hebburn,  Co.Durham. Scalded while taking a manhole door off a boiler under the fire bars.

OSBORNE John - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 63 – Labourer. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

OSBORNE Mark - 1893 - 11/04/1893 – Age 26 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an underground fire. 63 killed.

OSBORNE Walter - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 26 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

OSBORNE William - 1893 - 06/10/1893 – Age 18 – Jigger. Podmore Hall No. 3, Midland Coal Coke and Iron Co. Ltd., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Said to have strained his hip while lifting a tub on to the rails. He died on the 14th October. The doctor who attended him gave a certificate stating, as cause of death, Primary strain of hip joint, Secondary suppurative synovitis peritonitis pleurisy. No inquest was held.

OSBORNE William - 1893 - 20/09/1893 – Age 37 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mine Adventurers, Camborne, Cornwall. Owing to a large run of ground, the stull in the back of the 412 fathom level carried away and caught these men under it, as well as entombed another for 36 hours when he was released. They and others were at the time engaged strengthening it. 8 killed.

OSTLE John - 1891 - 11/01/1891 – Age 27 – Engineman. St. Helens, St. Helens Colliery & Brick Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Scalded to death by the bursting of a steam pipe. 4.20 pm. 2 killed.

OSTLER David Rees - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Age 40 – Hitcher. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

OSTLER James - 1896 - 27/03/1896 – Age 32 – Miner. Glespin, Robert Swann, Lanarkshire. Deceased, and a fellow workman, were preparing charges for two shots when the powder in their cans suddenly exploded burning both men severely. Deceased succumbed to his injuries 11 days afterwards. There was no evidence to show how the powder was ignited.

OSTLER John (non-fatal) - 1891 - 14/04/1891 – Miner. Carfin No. 7, William Dixon Ltd., Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working face.

OSTLER Peter - 1892 - 19/02/1892 – Age 14 - Pony driver. Leven, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Fall of roof.

OSWALD Ellen - 1898 - 26/07/1898 – Age 16 - Screen hand. Garswood Hall, Garswood Hall Collieries Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Three girls sat down on a fence rail, at the edge of the pit black and it broke suddenly, being partly rotten with age, causing them to fall a distance of 25 feet to the ground. The bad state of the rail was partly hidden being bad where it was rocketed into upright. She succumbed to the injuries received on the 31st instant. Female.

OSWALD John - 1895 - 30/04/1895 – Age 49 – Miner. Muircockhall, Henry Ness and Co., Fife. Fall of coal.

OSWALD Thomas - 1898 - 29/12/1898 – Age 24 - Pony driver. Glencraig, Wilsons and Clyde Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was coming outbye with a loaded rake, and by some means unknown he fell in front of the tubs. It is supposed he was attempting to shift the points in entering the lye while the tubs were in motion and stumbled.

OTTERSON John - 1898 - 31/03/1898 – Age 54 – Labourer. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was cleaning the way when trucks were being shunted into the Coke yard. The men shouted to him but being very deaf he did not hear them and the trucks caught him and very severely injured him. He was taken to the Sunderland Infirmary and died the same afternoon.

OTTLEY W. - 1894 - 19/07/1894 – Age 30 – Trammer. Lidgett, Lidgett Coal Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

OTTOWELL Samuel - 1890 - 27/09/1890 – Age 50 – Stallman. Hartshay, Butterley Iron and Coal Co., Ripley, Derbyshire. Whilst at work he threw a prop on to a shovel, lying on the floor. This caused the shovel to fly up and strike him on the head. Died from effusion of blood on the brain

OVENAND William - 1897 - 23/06/1897 – Age 35 – Overman. Banknock Livingstone, John Young and Co., Stirling. Fall of roof at main road while redding a previous fall.

OVERSTON Stephen - 1891 - 05/08/1891 – Age 53 – Stoker. North’s Navigation, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Maesteg, Glamorgan. In going up a ladder, to top of boilers, he spilled some oil from a "Comet" lamp upon his clothes, and while oiling the mechanical stoker his clothes caught fire at the lamp. He died from burns on 13th Aug.

OVERTON Richard - 1892 - 23/01/1892 – Age 57 – Collier. Llyn, Gelli and Tynebeddw Collieries Co. Ltd., Nantyglo, Monmouth. In the Yard vein (which is only 20 inches thick) a stone shaped like a pigs back, 2 feet wide 5 feet long and 14 inches thick, in the middle, fell from the roof on him in his working place. The gob wall was up within 4 feet of the coal face.

OVETON Enoch (injured) - 1894 - 20/07/1894 – Age 17 – Driver. Overton’s Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Donnington, Shropshire. Crushed by tub. He was taking his tub along the wall face, going between the tub and the donkey drawing it.

OVINGTON John - 1892 - 14/12/1892 – Age 19 – Drawer. Bamfurlong, Cross Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Underground fire. (James Towey died on the 15th Dec) 16 killed.

OWEN C.W. (injured) - 1894 - 19/03/1894 – Age 23 – Loader. Lingard Lane, J and R Stott-Milne, Bredbury, Cheshire. Fall of coal at fault at working face. Leg broken.

OWEN David - 1892 - 20/05/1892 – Age 30 – Sinker. North Duffryn Sinking Hills, Plymouth Co. Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Fatally injured by the fall of a piece of stone from side of sinking pit.

OWEN David - 1894 - 19/01/1894 – Age 60 – Labourer. Cambrian Navigation, Thomas Riches and Co., Clydach Vale, Glamorgan. Crushed between two loaded trams. While in act of turning one tram on turntable another tram ran against him.

OWEN David - 1894 - 20/04/1894 – Age 27 – Haulier. Bwllfa Dare, Bwllfa & Merthyr Dare Steam Collieries (1891) Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. According to medical testimony he died on 6th May from blood poisoning, said to have been caused by the breaking of a boil on the lower part of the back by lifting a tram.

OWEN David - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 22 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

OWEN David - 1896 - 14/07/1896 – Age 49 - Slate shifter. Bryn Eglwys & Canrtybedd (slate), Abergynolwyn Slate Quarries Co., Merioneth. He fell six yards down an inclined shaft into which he had gone out of curiosity. Died the next day.

OWEN David - 1896 - 29/05/1896 – Age 21 – Rider. Dowlais South Tunnel, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Thrown off journey and run over by tram owing to broken hitching plate.

OWEN David George - 1892 - 01/12/1892 – Age 21 – Brakesman. Hendregorgan, United Anthracite Collieries Ltd., Cwmtwrch, Glamorgan. Lifted against the roof by the brake handle while running a journey curbs having caught the brake strap.

OWEN Elias (injured) - 1894 - 12/01/1894 – Age 21 - Slate getter. Oakeley (slate). He had filled a small paper cartridge with a few ounces of gunpowder and it somehow took fire from his candle while he was about to put it into the hole he was going to charge. Face slightly burnt. One and a quarter weeks off.

OWEN Evan (injured) - 1890 - 01/10/1890 – Age 43 – Rockman. Ratgoed (slate). A stone fell unexpectedly from the side of the large underground chamber, in which he was working, knocked him down and caused him to fall several yards. Foot, ankle and head hurt. 10 weeks off.

OWEN Evan (injured) - 1894 - 09/04/1894 – Age 16 - Slate getter. Oakeley (slate). Put his foot into a wheel for reversing and stopping the sawing table. Right leg broken. 7 weeks off.

OWEN Evan - 1893 - 14/02/1893 – Age 48 – Shiftman. Hafod, Ruabon Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased knocked a prop out, supporting the top over a manhole, with the intention of ripping it higher, and when in the act of clearing some of the dirt out of the same a stone fell from under where he had taken the prop, from between the two slips, causing injuries to which he succumbed on the 27th inst.

OWEN George - 1894 - 25/05/1894 – Age 48 – Collier. Deep Navigation, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Treharris, Glamorgan. Fatally injured by the fall of a piece of coal which he was drawing down. Died 12th July. New seam.

OWEN Griffith - 1899 - 13/02/1899 – Age 45 – Agent. Glanrafon Slate Quarry, Glanrafon Slate Quarry Co., Carnarvon. While he was ascending a ladder, about 400 tons of rock loosened by heavy rain unexpectedly fell from the side of the quarry. He was buried beneath a portion of it. Died the following day. Another man was injured.

OWEN Henry (injured) - 1890 - 18/04/1890 – Age 37 – Labourer. Ashton Moss Downcast Shaft, Ashton Moss Colliery Co., Audenshaw, Lancashire. Strained himself whilst screwing up the clack door of the bottom lift of pumps.

OWEN Henry - 1890 - 10/04/1890 – Age 18 - Night haulier. Merthyr Vale, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Merthyr Vale, Glamorgan. Kicked on the head and chest by a horse while taking it out for the night shift.

OWEN Hugh (injured) - 1890 - 02/08/1890 – Age 29 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). He was lowering a block of slate, by means of a crane, when he let the handle slip and it flew round and struck him. 1 month off.

OWEN James - 1891 - 31/12/1891 – Age 30 – Collier. Ocean Eastern, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Ystrad Rhondda, Glamorgan. Fell down shaft from upper seam landing.

OWEN James - 1894 - 05/12/1894 – Age 45 – Collier. National, United National Collieries Ltd., Wattstown, Glamorgan. Fall of bed of strong cliff roof at face (12 feet x 1 to 6 foot wide x 14 inches thick) from between slips. One prop was discharged. Four feet seam.

OWEN John (injured) - 1894 - 16/02/1894 – Age 29 – Collier. Highley, Highley Mining Co. Ltd., Highley, Shropshire. He knocked a post out while getting coal down causing a fall of roof. Leg broken.

OWEN John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 25/09/1893 – Age 48 – Rockman. New Welsh Slate. His foot slipped just as he started to climb up the working face with a chain and he fell against a rock. Ribs fractured. 4 weeks off.

OWEN John - 1892 - 12/02/1892 – Age 43 – Ostler. International, International Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Garw Valley, Glamorgan. Fell out of cage, a collier having signalled away from an upper landing too soon.

OWEN John - 1892 - 14/09/1892 – Age 40 – Ripper. Nixon’s Merthyr Vale, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Merthyr Vale, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road while ripping.

OWEN John - 1892 - 14/10/1892 – Age 37 – Haulier. Harris’ Navigation Deep, Navigation Collieries Ltd., Treharris, Glamorgan. Overstrained himself with lifting a loaded tram on rails.

OWEN John - 1894 - 04/10/1894 – Age 29 - Asst. rider. Ocean Dare, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Treorky, Glamorgan. While engaged at his duties, as a rider, a small stone fell through some laggings on his head raising a small lump. He worked until 16th October when he fell against a journey but finished his shift. On the same night he became unconscious and died 23rd November from cerebral softening and meningitis caused by the accident.

OWEN John - 1895 - 19/09/1895 – Age 40 – Repairer. Cwmaman, Cwmaman Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. The framing of an incline sheave gave way while a journey of trams were descending and deceased was struck either by the sheave or brake handle.

OWEN John - 1895 - 25/09/1895 – Age 66 – Roadman. Cwmanan, Cwmaman Coal Co., Glamorgan. Died 20th Nov. from blood poisoning following a slight injury to the thumb by a stone from the roof falling on it. Two feet nine seam.

OWEN John Glynne (injured) - 1894 - 21/02/1894 – Age 43 - Engine driver. Votty & Bowydd (slate). He went to an underground winding engine, a little before relief time, and without informing the day man of his arrival, and set to work to oil the bearings of the flywheel. The man unaware of his presence started the engine and Owen was badly squeezed about the chest. 8 months off.

OWEN Luke - 1895 - 17/04/1895 – Age 54 – Fireman. Mosley Common, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. In spinney brow, repairing rail, when a large fall of roof occurred, top end caught deceased only slightly injured. Not reported at time. Pneumonia set inches Died 10th May.

OWEN Moses - 1897 - 09/09/1897 – Age 19 – Collier. Ocean Park, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, when in the act of standing a prop a stone 3 feet x 2 foot from 1 to 9 inches thick, fell on his head. Lower seam.

OWEN Moses - 1899 - 19/01/1899 – Age 39 – Labourer. Cae Main, Gravel Quarry, Penmawenmawr UDC, Carnarvon. While he was standing close to the working face, which at that particular spot was not more than 8 feet high, some gravel loosened by the rain fell upon him and broke his leg. He died of shock and exhaustion on the 25th.

OWEN Owen - 1899 - 19/08/1899 – Age 37 – Collier. Llest, Llest Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 19 killed.

OWEN Richard - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 20 – Haulier. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

OWEN Richard - 1895 - 03/05/1895 – Age 21 – Miner. Moelferna (metalliferous), Moelferna & Dee Side Slate and Slab Co. Ltd., Merioneth. Fell 38 feet from the edge of his working plane, through returning immediately after blasting and missing his way in the thick smoke.

OWEN Robert (non-fatal) - 1893 - 23/01/1893 – Age 31 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). A large block of slate, which was suspended by a crane swerving a little and striking his head, injured it severely. 25 weeks off.

OWEN Robert O. - 1897 - 19/01/1897 – Age 25 – Miner. Glenrafon Slate Quarry, Glenrafon Slate Quarry Co., Carnarvon. He was being raised from the bottom of a small shaft, 50 feet deep, by means of a hand windlass with one foot in the loop of the rope. He somehow fell off, when nearing the top, and was immediately killed.

OWEN Samuel - 1896 - 02/04/1896 – Age 36 – Labourer. Gigfran, grit (quarry), Birmingham Corporation, Radnor. He was between two empty trucks trying to move them farther apart. It was no part of his duty and though ordered away by the foreman he remained there. A locomotive pushed up some full trucks which bumped against the empty ones. Owen was so badly injured that he died the same evening.

OWEN Thomas (injured) - 1891 - 23/04/1891 – Age 30 – Rockman. Llechwedd (slate). Explosion of a charge of gunpowder, which had missed fired while he was boring out the tamping. Man not prosecuted but discharged from the mine. 1 week off.

OWEN Thomas - 1890 - 27/08/1890 – Age 50 – Shiftman. Hafod-y-Bwch, Ruabon Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was preparing to set a bar, to replace a broken one, and as he was chipping the side a large stone fell from the roof and knocked out the broken bar which struck deceased. He had just set a new bar a yard away from the broken one.

OWEN Thomas - 1894 - 28/08/1894 – Age 51 – Collier. Aberdare No. 9, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of side (coal), which he was in the act of taking down, a much larger piece than he expected fell, it slid down a back slip of bottom coal and pinned his legs against the gob. Seven feet seam, died of apoplexy the following day.

OWEN William (injured) - 1890 - 08/05/1890 – Age 40 – Rockman. Llechwedd (slate). He had bored and blasted a pillaring hole, this did not throw down the block of slate. He returned after firing when a small piece came away and fell upon his arm and broke it. Nineteen and a half weeks off.

OWEN William (injured) - 1890 - 19/02/1890 – Age 50 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). After firing a pillaring hole, one piece of the block of slate came down. Owen then climbed up the working face by his chain and endeavoured with a crowbar to get the remainder down. More fell than he expected and a piece struck his leg and broke it. 36 weeks off.

OWEN William (non-fatal) - 1893 - 19/04/1893 – Age 62 – Rockman. Llechwedd (slate). While he was erecting a small stage on the working face of his bargain, a small piece of slate came away unexpectedly, slid down and struck him. Leg broken above the ankle. Has not yet resumed work March - 1894.

OWEN William - 1893 - 16/06/1893 – Age 20 – Haulier. Rhymney, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Rhymney, Monmouth. Run over by a tram, which he appears to have stumbled in front of while shafting or going in front of it while letting it down a road dipping 3 inches in the yard.

OWEN William - 1897 - 18/11/1897 – Age 35 – Labourer. Corwen Slate, Corwen Slate Co. Ltd., Merioneth. Through a misunderstanding, when he was called to move out of the way, a slate slab, which was being split off a big block resting on the ground; he ran towards it instead of away from it. He was struck, and died shortly after.

OWEN William John - 1895 - 24/04/1895 – Age 14 - Collier’s boy. Bedlinog No. 2, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. While filling coal, a piece of clod 3 foot long from 4 to 10 inches wide, 17 inches thick, fell and caught his foot and in endeavouring to clear himself he fell against the axle of a tram fracturing his skull. Clod not overhanging and not spragged. Upper four feet. Nottinghamshire. system.

OWENS Daniel (non-fatal) - 1890 - 18/11/1890 – Brusher. Bredisholm No. 6, Provanhall Coal Co., Ballieston, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal.

OWENS Francis - 1893 - 21/07/1893 – Age 31 – Deputy. Felling, John Bowes and Partners Ltd., Felling,  Co.Durham. Inspection made. When working through an old headways a fall of stone from slippery backs caught him. His marrow was in the act of handing him a prop to set when the stone fell.

OWENS Issac - 1893 - 12/05/1893 – Age 17 – Driver. St. Helens, St. Helens Colliery and Brickworks Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was driving when a full tub got off the rails and when lifting it on again he sprained himself, in a few days becoming seriously ill and dying within a week.

OWENS James - 1891 - 17/01/1891 – Age 48 – Shifter. Cramlington, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Cramlington, Northumberland. Inquiry made. A piece of stone fell from the roof and caused a slight wound on his head which was not considered serious but terminated fatally. 11.0 pm.

OWENS John - 1890 - 05/12/1890 – Age 53 – Dataler. Crawford No. 2, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiry made. He was engaged in laying a road along the wide work face and had to draw a prop to make room for it when the roof fell on him. The fireman had told him to set another prop first but this he neglected to do.

OWENS William (injured) - 1891 - 24/02/1891 – Age 52 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). Skull fractured by a stone that came from the working face while his partner was getting down loose rock. 16 weeks off.

OXLEY A. - 1892 - 16/02/1892 – Age 20 – Collier. Fox Holes, W Wood, Leeds, Yorkshire. Injured by tub, died 23rd.

OXLEY A. - 1899 - 09/08/1899 – Age 13 - Link carrier. Manvers Main, Manvers Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Run over by tubs on engine plane.

OXLEY H. - 1898 - 15/10/1898 – Age 38 – Collier. Manvers Main, Manvers Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

OXLEY T. - 1897 - 09/03/1897 – Age 15 – Driver. Woodthorpe, Nunnery Coal Co., Yorkshire. He was bringing full Corves out of the working face when he slipped and fell under the first corf.

OXLEY Thomas - 1894 - 09/01/1894 – Age 31 – Hewer. Etherley, Henry Stobart and Co., Auckland, Co.Durham. Died today from injuries received to spine and ribs caused by a fall of coal on 9th Sept. 1893.
