UNDERWOOD Thomas (non-fatal) - 1892 - 03/05/1892 – Miner. Sundrum, Dalmellington Iron Co., Coylton, Ayrshire. Run over by hutch while drawing in front of it.
UNDERWOOD William - 1896 - 07/09/1896 – Age 49 – Labourer. Hollinswood, Ballast Hill (quarry), H Croom Johnson, Shropshire. Crushed between cage and spout of the slag crusher.
UNGOED Daniel - 1890 - 01/04/1890 – Age 15 - Collier’s boy. Norths’ Navigation Wyndham, Norths’ Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Maesteg, Glamorgan. Fall of piece of coal from slip and 16 inches of clod, above the coal face, was standing nearly square and not spragged and deceased was filling coal in front of it. 2 foot nine seam. Longwall.
UNSWORTH John - 1890 - 24/11/1890 – Age 29 – Miner. Brackley Dip Tunnel, Black & White, Bridgewater Trustees, Middle Hulton, Lancashire. Killed by the upper or white coal falling where he was taking it down.
UNSWORTH John - 1891 - 06/02/1891 – Age 33 – Collier. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was starting to reset a prop, which had been knocked down by his falling coals, and whilst stooping to make a place for the bottom of the prop a stone fell upon him, from over where the prop had originally been set. 3.0 pm.
UNSWORTH John - 1892 - 01/07/1892 – Age 32 – Dataller. Eatock, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Westhoughton, Lancashire. Whilst knocking out a prop he stood where he had knocked out three other props, when the prop fell a large stone came down on him 8 foot square. Gross Recklessness.
UNSWORTH John - 1895 - 31/05/1895 – Age 70 - Boiler tenter. Sherdley, Whitecross Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased accidentally fell into a hole, 4 feet deep, when they were removing a boiler a couple of planks had been thrown across the hole until it was levelled up again but he appears to have over balanced himself. He succumbed to the injuries received a month afterwards.
UNSWORTH John - 1896 - 15/06/1896 – Age 16 – Dataller. Woodshaw, Wigan Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made, and inquest attended. Deceased, with another elder man, had been drawing props from under some lay stone to get more height. This roof fell, to a thickness of 10 inches, and when they were proceeding to clear it away a portion of the upper roof gave way, the deceased being struck by the edge of the fall. He succumbed to the injuries received the following day.
UNSWORTH Joseph (injured) - 1891 - 30/04/1891 – Age 17 – Drawer. Wharton Hall No. 1, Bridgewater Trustees, Tyldesley, Lancashire. Leg broken by stone from the roof in the working bay. Inspection and inquiry.
UNWIN Joseph - 1891 - 03/07/1891 – Age 56 – Stallman. Unstone, Unstone Coal and Coke Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Whilst engaged pulling down roof, a slab of coal came from the face and fatally crushed him. Died 4th July. 1.0 pm.
UPTON Henry - 1893 - 10/02/1893 – Age 15 - Horse driver. Swannington, Cox and Turner, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicester. Deceased was taking a pony with one full tub and must have been driving furiously when, at a turn in the road, the tub got off the metals and knocked some timber out, which liberated the roof and fell upon him.
URE Alexander (non-fatal) - 1894 - 16/10/1894 – Age 15 – Drawer. Blackston, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Stirling. Fall of coal, 50 days off.
URIE Thomas - 1897 - 13/11/1897 – Age 45 – Furnaceman. Pollok Lochinch, Wilsons Clyde Coal Co. Ltd., Renfrew. Collapse of a brick retaining wall.
URMSTON James - 1891 - 15/07/1891 – Age 43 – Dataler. Old Boston, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased was assisting to retimber the main road way but whilst doing so the roof gave way bringing down with it a bar which was partly set and crushed him between the bar and side of the road way. A little more care on the part of the workmen would have avoided this accident. 11.30 pm.
UROE G. - 1894 - 26/05/1894 – Age 46 – Chargeman. Barrow, B H S Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.
URWIN James - 1897 - 27/05/1897 – Age 22 – Hewer. Clara Vale, Stella Coal, Co.Durham. Inquest attended. Fall of top coal. He had drawn his props from under the coal, preparatory to getting it down, and then discovering that some of his gear had been left at the face he went in to get it when the coal suddenly fell and caught him. Died June 27th.
URWIN Michael - 1899 - 29/06/1899 – Age 16 – Driver. Heworth, Owners of Heworth Colliery, Co.Durham. Enquiries made and inquest attended. When crossing from the horse hole, to hang his pony on to, some full tubs ran amain, he was knocked down by a full tub from another flat which had run amain in consequence of neglect to put in a sprag.
URWIN Samuel - 1892 - 03/02/1892 – Age 33 – Crutter. Ubberley, Chatterley Whitfield Collieries Ltd., Bucknall, Staffordshire. Fall of roof near face of crut while setting timber.
URWIN William - 1896 - 17/04/1896 – Age 20 – Putter. Eppleton, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Eppleton, Co.Durham. Head and neck crushed between roof and top of tub when riding on them. Died the following day.
USHER George - 1897 - 01/02/1897 – Age 47 - Coal hewer. West Auckland, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was going to his work and had just got into a cabin on the surface when he fell down and died from sudden failure of the hearts action.
UTTLEY F. - 1898 - 06/09/1898 – Age 30 – Collier. Greasborough, Greasborough Coal Co., Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 2 killed. Died 12th Sept.
