GAFFNEY B. (non-fatal) - 1893 - 13/10/1893 – Age 30 – Miner. Pentland & Straitton Clippens Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Explosion of gas. 82 days off.

GAFFNEY Frank (non-fatal) - 1890 - 18/01/1890 – Age 32 – Miner. Pentland Clippens Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Pump rods bruised his heel. 9 days off.

GAFFNEY James (injured) - 1891 – 05/11/1891 – Age 18 – Carter. Aghabeby, Arigna Mining Co. Ltd., Co. Rosscommon, Ireland. Finger injured by a piece of coal in loading his cart at the pit. Inquiry.

GAFFNEY Terence - 1892 – 16/11/1892 – Age 50 – Miner. Gilbertfield No. 2, Cambuslang Coal Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Fall of Coal.

GAFNEY Terrence (non-fatal) - 1891 – 11/09/1891 – Miner. Hallside, James Dunlop and Co., Newton, Lanarkshire. Fell into the cage seat and broke his leg.

GAGE John - 1895 – 06/02/1895 – Age 38 – Examiner. Timsbury, Samborne Smith and Co., Timsbury, Somerset. A shot which proved to be over charged with powder ignited coal dust and thus caused an extensive explosion. The overcharge resulted from an unseen joint loosening the work, which it was intended to do. 7 killed. Left a widow and child.

GAINFORD Tyson - 1899 – 19/12/1899 – Age 23 – Labourer. Glebe Iron Ore, S and J Lindow, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He went to get a drink, from a runner of water in the direction of a neighbouring working. He was warned that a shot had just gone off, by the man who fired it, but as he could reach water without going to the working face none of them apparently thought there was actual danger. He however was struck by a piece which had been loosened by the shot.

GAIR John - 1890 - 16/09/1890 – Age 68 – Shifter. Heworth, Owners of Heworth Colliery, Heworth, Co. Durham. Fall of coal. 10.0 pm.

GALE Frederick (non-fatal) - 1893 - 13/09/1893 – Age 21 – Miner. Devon Great Consols (metalliferous), Devon Great Consols Ltd., Tavistock, Devon. A pile of rocks, forming a stilling on which he was sitting, gave way and he fell 2 or 3 fathoms with the rocks resulting in some bruises, etc.

GALE Joseph (non-fatal) - 1893 - 18/04/1893 – Age 24 – Shaftsman. Wheal Crebor (metalliferous), Wheal Crebor Co., Tavistock, Devon. He was taking a bar of iron (about 12 lbs weight) down the ladder road and missing his hold fell about 10 feet.

GALLAGHER John * - 1894 – 08/06/1894 – Age 14 – Cramlington, Cramlington Coal Co., Cramlington, Northumberland.

GALLAGHER John - 1894 – 11/06/1894 – Age 14 – Driver. St. Hilda, Harton Coal Co., St. Hilda, Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was found dead alongside his full tubs. Possibly he was attempting to get from one side of the road to the other by crossing the limmers and got his head crushed against a baulk.

GALLAGHER Robert - 1894 – 11/02/1894 – Hewer. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Alleged to have received an accident about 28 weeks ago but he recovered but died today from bronchitis.

GALLAGHER T. - 1893 – 20/06/1893 – Age 20 – Collier. Whitwood, H Briggs and Son, Normanton, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

GALLEY Thomas (injured) - 1894 – 07/06/1894 – Age 64 – Dataler. Great Fenton, Pender Staffordshire Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Fenton, Staffordshire. Fall of roof in jig dip, in Great Row Seam, while repairing his head and leg were injured.

GALLIER George - 1892 - 02/01/1892 – Age 19 – Filler. Westminster, Westminster & Brymbo Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was about to descend the pit, in the cage, when he attempted to jump off for some reason and got crushed between the landing platform and cage.

GALLOCHER Peter - 1899 - 13/01/1899 – Age 40 – Miner. Holmes Oil Shale Holmes Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. After lighting two shots of gunpowder, at the face of a crosscut mine, and retiring crying fire he appears to have gone back on them and was instantly killed.

GALLOWAY James (non-fatal) - 1892 - 20/12/1892 – Age 28 – Drawer. Oakbank, Oakbank Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Struck by cuddy Still off.

GALLOWAY John (non-fatal) - 1890 - 28/04/1890 – Age 36 – Overman. Holmes, Holmes Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Explosion of firedamp. 4 days off. 2 injured.

GALLOWAY Robert - 1892 - 07/03/1892 – Age 30 – Roadsman. Pumpherston, Pumpherston Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Fall of roof.

GALLOWAY William (non-fatal) - 1892 - 26/09/1892 – Miner. Haughhead, Haughhead, Uddingston, Lanarkshire. While riding on hutch, on an incline, he was injured by the chain breaking.

GALLOWAY William - 1890 - 30/08/1890 – Age 58 – Sinker. Kinneil, Kinneil Coal and Coke Co., Linlithgow. Explosion of firedamp. 2 killed. 5.00 am.

GAMPION or CAMPION James Henry - 1893 - 01/05/1893 – Age 14 - Ore picker. No. 9 (metalliferous), Barrow Haematite Steel Co. Ltd., Stank, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. This boy lost his life through his own fault when attempting to move a railway waggon, with which he had no right to interfere. By some means his leg got under the wheel, and he received injuries from which he died on the 4th inst.

GANNEN Patrick - 1895 - 10/03/1895 – Age 26 – Miner. Clyde, Wilsons Clyde Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fell from cage.

GARBET James - 1890 - 29/07/1890 – Age 23 – Blacksmith. Old Hall, W Bickley, Bewley, Staffordshire. Died August 5th. Scalded by escaping steam from a boiler.

GARBETT John (injured) - 1894 - 25/01/1894 – Age 22 – Collier. Norton, R Heath and Sons, Burslem, Staffordshire. Fall of roof at long wall face in Hard Mine. Back crushed.

GARBETT John - 1890 - 05/12/1890 – Age 56 – Dataller. West Cannock, West Cannock Colliery Co., Hednesford, Staffordshire. Died December 9th. Fall of rock roof which displaced the timber.

GARBETT Thomas - 1891 - 09/10/1891 – Age 53 – Stallman. Cannock & Rugeley, Cannock & Rugeley Colliery Co., Hednesford, Staffordshire. Fall of rock roof.

GARBUTT George R. - 1890 - 24/09/1890 – Age 20 – Onsetter. Burnhope, MA Ritson, Lanchester, Co. Durham. Fell from Harvey to Busty Seam, a distance of 40 yards. He ran a tub into the wrong side of shaft and was carried with it. The cage was at the other side.

GARBUTT Robert - 1899 - 02/02/1899 – Age 49 – Checkweighman. New Brancepeth, Cochrane and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. While at work he took an apoplectic fit and died the same day.

GARDENER Henry - 1896 - 28/01/1896 – Age 66 - Clay getter. Canada Clay (quarry), Edward Joseph Sill, Warwick. Deceased was undercutting the face of clay when it fell and killed him.

GARDENER John - 1891 - 14/05/1891 – Age 32 – Collier. Llwynypia No. 1. Glamorgan Coal Co., Llwynypia, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (about 12 feet x 8 feet x 20 inches thick) in face of heading just inside the double timbers. The seam the two foot nine was here thinner on the solid side than it had been on the waste side and the roof clift was lying in irregular beds. There were eight props with lids found below the fall. Seam 4 to 5 foot thick. Long wall. 2 killed.

GARDENER or GARDNER James - 1891 - 11/12/1891 – Age 20 – Hewer. Page Bank, Bell Bros., Willington, Co. Durham. Fall of top coal, which he had cut through without having first spragged it. 9.30 am.

GARDINER James (non-fatal) - 1893 - 08/02/1893 – Age 28 – Miner. Whitehill, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Fall of roof.

GARDINER or GARDNER Joseph - 1899 - 13/01/1899 – Age 54 – Hewer. Heworth, Owners Heworth Colliery, Co. Durham. Inquest attended. A stone fell from three slips in the roof without any warning. The deputy set a prop under the stone about two hours before and deceased had just set another when the accident occurred. Buried at St. Mary, Heworth.

GARDNER Alfed Thomas - 1893 - 11/02/1893 – Age 16 - Horse driver. Whitwick No. 6, Whitwick Colliery Co., Coalville, Leicester. Explosion of gas. Fall of roof in the main roadway of the mine which liberated a quantity of gas that had accumulated over the timber. The gas fired at the pony drivers naked light as they were passing within a few yards of the main road at the time. 2 killed.

GARDNER Fred - 1892 - 06/08/1892 - Age 22 – Collier. Ocean Dare, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Treorky, Glamorgan. Struck by trams getting off rails on engine plane at a junction where he was standing for journey to pass.

GARDNER George - 1896 - 27/01/1896 – Age 25 – Ostler. Ferndale Nos 7 & 8, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 57 killed.

GARDNER James * - 1895 - 01/08/1895 – Age 61. Margaret Winder (metalliferous), Winder Gill Iron Ore Co., Winder, Lancashire.

GARDNER James - 1893 - 17/11/1893 - Age 45 - Miner. Callendar, Callendar Coal Co., Stirling. Fall of coal.

GARDNER James - 1898 - 12/04/1898 – Age 20 – Bottomer. Clydesdale, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased, who was bottomer at a midworking, raised the gate which fenced the shaft in order to signal to the engineman to stop an ascending cage and place it at the landing. The cage was stopped a short distance above the landing and immediately set back to it but in the interval the deceased had pushed a tub into the shaft and had fallen with it. Had he signalled for the cage with his signal bell and only raised the gate after the cage had been placed at the landing the accident would have been prevented.

GARDNER John - 1894 - 19/12/1894 – Age 24 – Hewer. South Tanfield, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., South Tanfield, Co. Durham. Inspection and inquest attended. Injured by a fall of stone, having neglected to set a prop, and died within a year afterwards.

GARDNER Tom - 1894 - 13/01/1894 – Age 21 - Asst. timberman. South Wales, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Cwmtillery, Monmouth. As six railway trucks were being hauled up an incline, from the railway, for loading early in the morning the fourth in some manner got off the rails. He happened to be riding on one of the buffers of his truck and being knocked off he fell under the wheels and was instantly killed. He had been engaged at this work only about three weeks.

GARDNER William - 1890 - 11/03/1890 – Age 14 - Engine attdnt. Muirhead No. 19, Niddrie and Benhar Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Caught by crank. 2.00 pm.

GARDNER William - 1898 - 05/02/1898 – Age 33 – Miner. Ingliston Oil Shale, Youngs Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. While taking gunpowder out of a can, with which to charge a shot, a spark fell from deceased's lamp which was on his cap into the can igniting the contents and causing an explosion.

GARLAND William - 1890 - 07/01/1890 – Age 72 – Collier. Ashton Vale, Ashton Vale Iron Co. Ltd., Bristol, Gloucester. Fall of roof from slips. The place did not appear to me to have been efficiently secured before work was commenced or subsequent to the clod which had been propped under having fallen.

GARLECH Tim. - 1896 - 22/08/1896 – Age 22 – Haulier. Nixon’s Merthyr Vale, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall on road while waiting for the repairers to fill a tram. Four foot seam.

GARMAN William - 1898 - 08/10/1898 – Age 35 – Banksman. Moorfields, Altham Colliery Co., Lancashire. Cut in two by hauling chain running away whilst being lowered down the shaft.

GARNER George - 1899 - 06/03/1899 – Age 23 – Labourer. Sundon Chalk Quarry, BJ Forder and Son, Bedford. Deceased and several other men were engaged levelling the floor of a newly erected kiln for the lime. The wooden centre used for turning the kiln arch had been withdrawn. The kiln collapsed from end to end killing the deceased and injuring five other workmen.

GARNER John - 1891 - 14/02/1891 – Age 53 – Onsetter. Hucknall Torkard No. 1, Hucknall Colliery Co., Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. Assisting to fix timber to support the roof. A small piece of roof fell and fatally injured the deceased. Died 26th February. 8.0 am.

GARNER John - 1892 - 02/11/1892 – Age 21 – Waggonman. Long Lane, Swan Lane Brick and Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was in an empty waggon when the scotch gave way, he got caught between the top of the waggon and the slack box of scree, there being only a few inches clearance.

GARNER Joseph - 1891 - 29/04/1891 – Age 56 – Dataler. Ladies Lane, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Hindley, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was packing some debris in the widework and appears to have drawn a prop, to make room to work, when the roof fell upon him. The place was well propped. 8.0 pm.

GARNET George - 1894 - 28/12/1894 – Age 39 - Dataller. Ashton’s Field, Bridgewater Trustees, Little Hulton, Lancashire. Fall of overhanging roof at side of roadway unsupported.

GARNON W. - 1899 - 12/10/1899 – Age 22 – Collier. Cethin, Crawshay Bros. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, fireclay 10 feet x 2 feet x 31 inches thick fell from between two slips, no props under it. Upper Yard seam.

GARRETT John - 1897 - 30/04/1897 – Age 64 – Screenman. Renishaw Park No. 1, J and G Wells Ltd., Derbyshire. Six empty wagons were allowed to run away down the sidings and being unable to get out of the way was run over.

GARRITY John (non-fatal) - 1890 – 28/04/1890 – Reddsman. Bredisholme No. 4, Provanhall Coal Co., Baillieston, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on road. 2 injured.

GARRITY Luke (non-fatal) - 1892 – 17/08/1892 – Pony driver. Blackston No. 1, Blackston Mineral Co., Paisley, Lanarkshire. Fell in front of his race and was run over.

GARRITY Michael (non-fatal) - 1890 – 10/09/1890 – Age 28 – Miner Pumpherston, Pumpherston Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Explosion of shot. 21 days off.

GARRY Hugh (non-fatal) - 1892 - 18/06/1892 – Miner. Auchinharvie, Glengarnock Iron and Steel Co., Stevenston, Ayrshire. Fall of roof at working face.

GARSIDE David - 1897 – 20/04/1897 – Age 43 – Collier. Stockfield, Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place from a slip. Ought to have been seen.

GARSIDE J. - 1899 – 23/02/1899 – Labourer. Dewsbury Road Clay Quarry, G Oakes and Son, Yorkshire. The ‘jib’ of a crane, which collapsed, fell and struck him. Died 24th February.

GARSIDE John - 1897 – 06/05/1897 – Age 51 – Stoneman. East Hetton, Walter Scott Ltd., Co. Durham. Inundation of water in Cassop way, of Harvey seam, owing to workings holing into old workings in Cassop Colliery. 10 killed.

GARSWOOD Thomas - 1891 – 08/09/1891 – Age 45 – Undermanager. Tyldesley 7 foot, Astley and Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Tyldesley, Lancashire. Killed by top coal falling as he was showing a miner how to take a chock out. Inspection and inquest attended.

GARTH J. - 1895 – 27/06/1895 – Age 13 – Tool carrier. Clayton (quarry), R and D Jennings, Yorkshire. Fell into quarry while playing.

GARTSHORE Walter (non-fatal) - 1890 – 28/02/1890 – Miner. Ellismuir No. 3, Provanhall Coal Co., Baillieston, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp.

GARVEY Joseph - 1891 – 27/09/1891 – Age 33 – Miner. Croftside Trencherbone, Darcy Lever Coal Co. Darcy Lever, Lancashire. Killed by the empty tub that he was pushing colliding against a full tub, that escaped from a drawer on a slope, the iron scotch having come out. Inspection and inquest attended.

GARVEY Patrick - 1896 – 21/12/1896 – Age 43 – Daywageman. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was engaged rising rails, in an abandoned roadway, when a fall of roof occurred capping one of the bars and crushing the deceased. The night fireman stated he had informed the deceased, before sending him there, to make the place safe first before raising the rails as the road had been crushed badly.

GARVEY Peter - 1899 – 11/11/1899 – Age 22 – Brakesman. Ravenhead, St Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased was coming down, on a coal train, and was riding on a buffer and in putting his foot on the brake lever, to brake, he slipped and fell under the wheels and was run over.

GARVIE Owen (non-fatal) - 1891 – 09/09/1891 – Age 28 – Miner. Dalmeny, Dalmeny Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Fall of shale. 24 days off.

GASCOIGNE Robert - 1894 – 09/10/1894 – Age 52. Burradon, Burradon & Coxlodge Coal Co. Ltd., Burradon, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. After firing a shot in the coal the deceased returned to work when a fall of stone took place. From all appearances the place was properly timbered but the stone fell from slippery partings and top.

GASCOYNE Thomas - 1890 – 28/07/1890 – Age 47 – Banksman. Townfield, Gascoyne Lenthall and Co., Dronfield, Derbyshire. Attempting to steady a water tub, as it was coming out at the pit top. The tub drew him into the shaft and he fell to the bottom.

GASH John - 1898 – 14/02/1898 – Age 57 – Hewer. North Bitchburn, North Bitchburn Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Died while at work in his place from failure of the heart's action. Ventilation satisfactory.

GASKELL Henry - 1890 – 28/02/1890 – Age 34 – Collier. Orrell, Orrell Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. The roof fell close to the face from between two parallel slips capping three props. 11 pm.

GASKELL Henry - 1896 – 01/05/1896 – Age 43 – Collier. Moss, Pearson & Knowles Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attend. The locomotive was shunting waggons in the railway siding when the deceased attempted to cross between two full waggons, further ahead, which got blocked up. He was crushed against the buffer and killed. Footbridge will now be made for these sidings to the pits.

GASKELL Joseph - 1896 – 03/07/1896 – Age 38 – Daywageman. Newton, Clifton and Kerlsey Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place, taking out a chock under broken roof. Ought to have uncapped chock by pulling coal off.

GASKELL William - 1891 – 13/08/1891 – Age 36 – Fireman. Norley, Norley Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Part of the shaft had fallen in, just above a mouthing, and buried one of the cages to which was attached a flat winding rope, the other end of which was afterwards taken off the drum and clamped to the headgear. The other cage was then lowered down to the fall and a temporary scaffold fixed to it upon which the deceased men were at work when a second fall took place and forced the suspending rope through the clamps and it fell down the shaft upon them and killed them. The shaft walling was far too weak. 2 killed. 8.0 pm.

GASSEY Michael (injured) - 1891 – 31/03/1891 – Age 34 – Miner. Allen’s Green, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Radcliffe, Lancashire. Injured by tubs in the gig brow near meetings he instead of going into a manhole was watching the empty tubs when run upon by the full. Inspection and inquiry.

GATE Jonathan - 1894 – 22/02/1894 – Age 58 – Fireman. Seaton Moor, Flimby & Broughton Moor Coal & Fireclay Co. Ltd., Seaton Moor, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. It appears that the deceased was pushing an empty tub into a cage end, by some means, when it got to the wrong side of the pit, which had been left unfenced by the banksman, and fell down the shaft.

GATER Elijah - 1890 – 31/01/1890 – Age 42 – Collier. Corbridge, JM Watkin, Corbridge, Shropshire. Fall of stone from side of level in Hoo Marl. 2 killed.

GATER John - 1896 – 03/10/1896 – Age 56 – Dataler. Brownhills, R Heath and Sons Ltd., Staffordshire. Struck on head by jig post which was pulled out by a tub getting off the rails in the dip and striking the landing sill.

GATER Thomas (injured) - 1894 – 17/03/1894 – Age 71 – Carpenter. Apedale Burley, Midland Coal Coke and Iron Co. Ltd., Newcastle, Stafford. Concussion of brain caused by falling through a hole in upper floor of washing house in course of erection.

GATES Joseph - 1894 - 16/06/1894 – Contractor. Clifton, Allerdale Coal Co., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased who was road repairing with other men went to work in another part of the same roadway and was afterwards found under a fall of stone. What caused the fall is unknown.

GATIS William - 1890 - 13/09/1890 – Age 44 – Blacksmith. Hebburn, A Tyne Coal Co., Hebburn, Co. Durham. Scalded by the opening of a valve on the steam pipe connected to the underground engine. 2 killed. 11.30 am.

GAUNT Frederick - 1891 - 16/11/1891 – Age 57 – Stallman. Norwood, Sheepbridge Iron and Coal Co., Eckington, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Sudden weight caused a large piece to burst from the roof and knocked the deceased down, fatally injuring him. Died the same day. 7.0 am.

Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work, in their places, two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

GAVIN Patrick - 1890 - 25/08/1890 – Age 40 – Dataler. Moss Arley, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. He was getting out of the cage, at bank, before the catches had been put in and on the cage being lowered he was caught by the cage on the back as he sprang out.

GAVIN Philip (non-fatal) - 1892 - 03/06/1892 – Brusher. Govan No. 6, William Dixon Ltd., Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working face.

GAVIN William - 1895 - 20/02/1895 – Age 41 – Overman. Bowhill No. 2, Dalmellington Iron Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Caught in self acting incline by runaway hutches.

GAWNE Thomas - 1892 - 20/01/1892 – Age 26 – Labourer. Great Laxey (metalliferous). He was working at the foot of a heap of stuff resting on a bunning or stull (platform) and was causing it to run down into the level. While he was in the act of loosening a large stone it rolled down and caught him in the stomach causing internal injuries which resulted in his death three days afterwards.

GAYLARD George - 1899 - 16/12/1899 – Age 21 – Collier. Llwynypia No. 1, Glamorgan Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face. While filling a tram of coal piece of stone fell on his head from between two props about 5 foot apart. Died December 23rd. Four feet seam.

GAZE Thomas - 1894 - 08/06/1894 – Age 17 – Putter. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. After finishing his work in the pit he was trespassing on the branch railway and in attempting to get on to waggons, while in motion, he fell and was run over.

GEACH Samuel - 1899 - 11/09/1899 – Age 48 – Carter. Wheal Martyn China Clay Quarry, J Lovering and Co., Cornwall. He contracted for the carting of clay, in casks from the works to the ship, and while on the works tightening the chain by which he secured the casks and which belonged to himself a link broke resulting in one of the casks falling upon him. He was clearly in the employ of the firm and the accident, having occurred in or about the quarry, I have compromised it under the Act. Had it occurred away from the works it would not even have been covered by the Factory Act.

GEAR Alexander - 1898 - 04/07/1898 – Age 22 – Miner. Arniston, Arniston Coal Co., Edinburgh. Deceased was said to have been in the act of rising from the holing, to drill a shot hole in the head coal, which was 2 foot 2 inches in thickness, when about 18 cwts. of head coal suddenly slipped off and fell upon him.

GEARTY B. - 1896 - 27/11/1896 – Age 65 – Quarryman. Ringby (quarry), B Riley and Sons, Yorkshire. Overbalanced himself and fell off a plank.

GEDDES John (non-fatal) - 1890 - 17/09/1890 – Miner. Broomlands No. 7, Bourtreehill Coal Co., Irvine, Ayrshire. Explosion of firedamp.

GEDDES Robert (non-fatal) - 1890 - 26/02/1890 – Age 18 – Driver. Broxburn, Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Bruised by tubs. 22 days off.

GEE George - 1891 - 06/01/1891 – Age 22 – Dataler. Winstanley, Winstanley Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was going down on a tank with the morning fireman when the tank caught a bearer and partly upset and throwing him off he fell down the pit. 4.0 am.

GEE John Albert - 1898 - 19/04/1898 – Age 15 - Deputy’s boy. Whitwick No. 5, Whitwick Colliery Co., Leicester. A fire broke out on the main airway of the mine and developed so rapidly that only six men, including the deputy, out of a total of 41 who were at work beyond the fire were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.

GEE William - 1891 - 29/10/1891 – Age 19 – Drawer. Sutton Heath, Sutton Heath and Lea Green Colliery Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased stayed over time, along with seven other men, to clean a main hauling brow, when he appears to have disturbed the foot of a prop supporting a large stone which fell from between two slips and killed him. 5.0 pm.

GEE William - 1897 - 23/06/1897 – Age 8 - School boy. Pelton, Lord Dunsaney and Partners, Co. Durham. He was riding on a spring cart with a man and when it was crossing over a private railway it was caught by some waggons being shunted into the colliery siding and this boy was killed.

GEER Daniel - 1891 - 18/02/1891 – Age 34 – Collier. St. Helens, St. Helens Colliery Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inquest attended. The deceased, with another man, was repairing two broken bars but before new bars could be reset a piece of metal, from the roof, fell on to his foot. He went on working but subsequently his foot took bad ways and he died. He was injured on 24th Dec. 1890. 11.0 am.

GEESON George - 1895 - 11/02/1895 – Age 54 – Stallman. Silver Hill, Nottinghamshire. He died from natural causes whilst waiting on the pit bank to descend the mine.

GEGG Archibald (non-fatal) - 1894 - 22/03/1894 – Age 22 – Drawer. Glemboig, Glemboig Union Fireclay Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of clay at face, 175 days off.

GELL William - 1895 - 02/08/1895 – Age 47 – Collier. Pendlebury, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of coal from face, was getting coal from a place he had been ordered not to and had no sprags set.

GELLICKS Owen - 1891 - 22/09/1891 – Age 18 – Collier. Bent, Bent Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of coal and blaes.

GELSON William - 1899 - 11/10/1899 – Age 23 – Hewer. Wingate Grange, Owners of Wingate Grange Colliery Co., Durham. A fall of stone occurred at a slip, from under which he had hewed the coal, and caught him, he was so severely injured that he died about five hours afterwards.

GEMMELL John - 1896 - 17/08/1896 – Age 30 – Miner. Quarter, Colin Dunlop and Co., Lanarkshire. Fall of stone at face of close place.

GEMMELL Walter (non-fatal) - 1891 - 30/12/1891 – Age 12 - Bogie boy. Ferniegare, Archibald Russell, Fife. Crushed by bogie. Still off.

GEORGE Charles Frederick - 1890 - 13/06/1890 – Age 25 – Miner. Agecroft Doe, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Pendlebury, Lancashire. Killed by top coal falling unexpectedly from slips as they were taking it down. 2 killed.

GEORGE Edwin - 1892 - 18/02/1892 – Age 42 - Horse driver. Foxes Bridge, Foxes Bridge Colliery Co. Ltd., Cinderford, Gloucester. While engaged with a horse, shunting railway trucks on the colliery sidings, he was crushed between the buffers.

GEORGE John - 1892 - 20/12/1892 – Age 43 – Collier. Lower Duffryn, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof from between two slants, one of which had been visible for days. Roof insufficiently timbered.

GEORGE Lewis - 1891 - 17/11/1891 – Age 24 – Collier. Ocean Maindy, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Ystrad Rhondda, Glamorgan. Fall of roof strong clift, 7 feet x from 1 foot to 4 foot and 1 inch thick, at edge of ripping, between roadside props 10 foot apart. Seam 5 foot 8 inches thick. Long wall.

GEORGE Phillip - 1893 - 25/05/1893 – Age 16 - Collier’s boy. Seven Sisters, Evans and Bevan, Neath, Glamorgan. Crushed between the buffers of trucks while attempting to pass between them, a locomotive having at that moment joined the trucks.

GEORGE William - 1896 - 13/04/1896 – Age 27 - Loco. Fireman. Fordell, Fordell Trustees, Fife. Explosion of locomotive boiler. The engine was standing at the time of explosion. The shell gave way at a point where a crack had been observed and a stop rivet inserted.

GEROD George (injured) - 1894 - 08/06/1894 – Age 30 – Roadman. High Carr, Reps. of late JH Williamson, Newcastle, Staffordshire. Crushed by tub owing to breakage of a lift rail in jig dip.

GERRAD Arthur - 1897 - 14/11/1897 – Age 21 – Carpenter. Garswood Hall, Garswood Hall Collieries Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. When in the act of screwing a bolt up in the head gear, and resting on a beam, the screw key slipped as he was pressing it from him, causing him to fall to the ground, a distance of 24 feet. He died from the effects of the injuries received at the infirmary the same day.

GERRARD Thomas - 1899 - 25/08/1899 – Age 22 – Collier. Bamfurlong Cross, Tetley Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were engaged working a piece of coal that had been left back next to a fault and were about completing it when the roof collapsed burying the deceased and capping the bars and props for a distance of five square yards, the roof being very weak at that part. 2 killed.

GERRARD William - 1890 - 14/07/1890 – Age 63 – Collier. Rose Bridge, Rose Bridge & Douglas Bank Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was getting into the cage when the engine started, and he was crushed against the top of the mouthing. The hooker-on had omitted to signal to the engineman that he wanted the cage, as he should have done after coal winding hours, hence the accident.

GERRARD William - 1892 - 01/03/1892 – Age 45 – Blacksmith. Crow Orchard, Whitemoss Coal Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased were killed by a collision of the cages in the shaft caused by oscillation, the guide ropes being too slack. 3 killed.

GERRARD William - 1893 - 04/05/1893 – Age 16 – Driver. Norton, R Heath and Sons, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Fell off tubs drawn by a horse and was crushed under a tub. Died 6th May.

GERVAN Francis - 1898 - 29/09/1898 – Age 27 – Collier. Annagher No. 5, Ulster Fireclay Works Co., Co. Tyrone, Ireland. Explosion of firedamp, candle being used. Re-entry after an absence, to take a meal. Want of ventilation. 3 killed.

GESKELL George - 1897 - 29/04/1897 – Age 19 – Metalman. Giants Hall, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was engaged with the Contractor, ripping the roadway and packing it, when a stone fell from the roof upon the deceased, which they had failed to get down previously and had considered it secure.

GETHING David - 1899 - 09/02/1899 – Age 62 – Loader. Knowle, Knowle Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Crushed by lump of coal 8 foot 3 inches x 3 foot 3 inches x 2 foot 6 inches which slid from the rib and pinned him against a tree.

GETHING John - 1897 - 18/08/1897 – Age 42 – Stallman. Hucknall No. 1, Top Hard Coal, Hucknall Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was setting timber for the support for the roof near some old workings when the roof fell and killed him. The timber appeared to have been delayed, and it is probable that had it been set, when the coal was removed, the fall would not have occurred.

GETT INCHES John - 1892 - 21/07/1892 – Age 32 – Drawer. Tyldesley, Astley & Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Tyldesley, Lancashire. In working place from pothole not discovered room for one or two props. Fall 4 feet 9 inches diameter.
