FADDIS Robert (non-fatal) - 1890 - 02/07/1890 – Drawer. Lightshaw No. 1, Eglington Iron Co., Muirkirk, Ayrshire. While breaking a race of hutches on self acting incline the empty hutches came up and jammed him against a prop.
FAGAN William - 1898 - 08/03/1898 – Age 63 - Lamp examiner. Whitehaven Croft, Whitehaven Colliery Co., Whitehaven, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased, who was employed at the underground lamp room, had for some reason gone on to the engine plane and was knocked down by an empty set.
FAHEY Thomas - 1891 - 15/11/1891 – Age 19 – Putter. Castle Eden, Castle Eden Coal Co. Ltd., Castle Eden, Co. Durham. Alleged to have sprained himself inwardly in June last. Nothing said about it until after his death. It seems the real cause of death was attributable to Consumption and not an accident.
FAHY James - 1892 - 20/01/1892 – Age 58 – Dataler. Cossall, Cossall Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased and other men were repairing a roadway when a piece of roof fell and injured his arm necessitating amputation. Died May 6th.

FAILEY Moses - 1890 - 07/11/1890 – Age 52 – Bandsman. Himley, J Newley and Co., Dudley, Worcestershire. Died November 11th. Fall of clod from the roof which he had loosened and beneath which he carelessly went.
FAIRBAIRN Robert - 1895 - 11/11/1895 – Age 24 - Loco. Fireman. Hutton Henry, Hutton Henry Coal Co., Hutton Henry, Co. Durham. He seems to have fallen on the line before the set and to have been run over by 12 waggons and loco. Both legs broken. Died 17th Nov.
FAIRBROTHER William - 1898 - 11/05/1898 – Age 14 - Horse driver. Cartwright Coal Miners Cooperative Co., Derbyshire. He was found dead under a loaded tram and from the position in which he was found he appeared to have been riding at the time of the accident which was contrary to the rules of the mine.
FAIRCLOUGH Richard - 1892 - 14/12/1892 – Age 14 - Lasher on. Bamfurlong Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Underground fire. (James Towey died on the 15th Dec) 16 killed.
FAIRCLOUGH Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 24/09/1890 – Age 18 - Hooker on. Croft Side 4 Foot, Darcey Lever Coal Co., Darcey Lever, Lancashire. Leg broken by a full tub which came down the gig brow with only the rope attached he having signalled without hooking the empty.
FAIRCLOUGH Thomas - 1892 - 26/01/1892 – Age 36 – Collier. Nook, Astley & Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Astley, Lancashire. He was taking an empty tub off the endless rope in a downbrow when a lashing chain broke, higher up, and four tubs ran down caught him causing severe injuries to his back. There was a manhole within five yards of where he stood and he appeared to think the tubs would pass him on the opposite road. Died 27th Jan.

FAIRFULL Thomas (non-fatal) - 1893 - 02/06/1893 – Age 41 – Miner. Dalbeath & Hill of Beath Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Explosion of gunpowder. 108 days off.
FAIRHURST George - 1896 - 18/09/1896 – Age 16 – Shunt minder. Billinge Lane, Winstanley Collieries Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A journey of 16 empty tubs, attached to the haulage rope, was being run into the shunt when the last tub was knocked off the rails and knocked out a prop out between the empty and full tub liberating a stone from the roof which fell upon the deceased. He ought to have remained in the manhole until the journey had properly landed at the shunt.

When in the act of working a stump of coal, in order to straighten the level, a stone gave way to a slip in the roof in the New Mine crushing him.

FAIRHURST T. - 1897 - 04/03/1897 – Age 54 – Gasman. West Riding, Pope and Pearson Ltd., Yorkshire. Crushed by a waggon which was being shunted into the gas house. Died 5th Mar.
FAIRHURST Thomas - 1892 - 07/01/1892 – Age 40 – Daywageman. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was assisting a contractor to put up some bars when a layer of bond fell from the roof upon him causing injuries to which he succumbed, 12th May.

FAIRS Joseph Christopher - 1898 - 19/04/1898 – Age 54 – Stoneman. West Auckland, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. When travelling to his work, on engine plane, he was caught by a full set coming out and so severely injured that he died about seven and a half hours afterwards.

FALKNER Francis - 1895 - 26/12/1895 – Age 17 - Ash wheeler. Piercey Brickworks, Joseph Hamblet, Staffordshire. Against orders he took a petroleum lamp into a Lancashire boiler flue, to clean it out, the lamp was upset and the oil catching fire fatally burnt him. Died 12th Jan 1896.

FARISH Joshua - 1899 - 29/06/1899 – Age 58 – Labourer. Whitburn, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Inquest attended. When repairing a tippler he was crushed between it and a tub which was being taken past. A post-mortem examination showed that death was due to pneumonia accelerated by the accident. He died July 7th.
FARMER Allan - 1897 - 31/08/1897 – Age 25 – Drawer. Limerigg, John Nimmo and Son Ltd., Stirling. Deceased was filling a hutch at a point in an old road where a new place was broken off when the roof above where the coal had been extracted fell over on to him.
FARMER Henry - 1896 - 18/12/1896 – Age 13 - Horse driver. New London, Digby Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. He was run over and killed by two loaded trams, which broke away down an inclined roadway, they met the deceased coming up with his horse and trams. The driver had forgotten to put the drag on behind the trams when going up the roadway.

FARNDON Joseph - 1896 - 08/09/1896 – Age 20 – Fireman. Ansley Hall Brickworks, Ansley Hall Colliery Co., Warwick. He was attempting to put a belt on a pulley, which was revolving at high speed, when he got entangled with the shaft and the belt.

FARNSWORTH William - 1893 - 13/02/1893 – Age 42 – Screenman. Awsworth, Awsworth Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Crushed by the spokes of a flywheel which moved whilst the deceased stood 'near it watching the engineman do some repairs.

FARRIMOND James - 1890 - 06/08/1890 – Age 16 - Lasher on. Orrell, Orrell Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was employed to guide the tubs round a curve pulley, on the endless rope road, when the rope sprang out of the pulley and caught him on the neck. He had been allowed to work on the wrong side of the rope.
FARRIMOND William - 1891 - 12/08/1891 – Age 40 – Joiner. Hindley Field, Norris and Lees, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection and inquiry made. He was erecting some new additions to the screens on the surface when he overbalanced and fell into the staging below, a distance of 21 feet. He died on 8th September. 6.40 am.
FARRINGTON Edward - 1896 - 20/02/1896 - Age 35 – Collier. Westleigh, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fell in cage from top to bottom of pit. Engineman started upwards instead of downwards. Disengaging hook fixed the cage but the safety catches, which should have held the cage, did not do so. 8 killed.
FARRINGTON James - 1892 - 17/09/1892 – Age 50 – Dataller. Moston, Platt Bros. and Co. Ltd., Moston, Lancashire. Fall of roof in level taking down timber to drop the following dirt when a large quantity came away, over bars, and caught him. Want of care in taking out too many bars at one time.

FARTHING Jonathan - 1899 - 06/06/1899 – Age 37 – Sinker. Cramlington High, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Cramlington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased and four others were working at the bottom of a sinking pit when the heapstead got on fire, owing to the upsetting of an oil lamp. Farthing came away holding on to the edge of the kibble but lost his hold and fell down the shaft.

FAULKNER Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 01/07/1890 – Age 22 – Miner. Whittaker Bridge 6 Foot, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Radcliffe, Lancashire. Thigh broken by top coal falling and knocking out his sprags.
FAWCETT Charles - 1897 - 25/11/1897 – Age 23 – Stoneman. Ushaw Moor, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co. Durham. He had fired a shot, which did not bring all the stone down, and he took a bar to pinch it off and got too far under it and when it fell away he was caught and killed.
FAWCETT Thomas - 1897 - 01/12/1897 – Age 19 – Driver. Whitehaven, William Whitehaven Colliery Co., Whitehaven, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. A number of workmen were being conveyed on the underground train, after work towards the shaft, the train being in charge of a properly appointed guard. When about 200 yds from the landing station and while the train was in motion deceased jumped out and was knocked down by the empty train going inbye. He was entirely to blame for getting out of the train when in motion contrary to the rules.

FAY Michael - 1893 - 07/04/1893 – Age 32 - Hooker on. Tawd Vale, Tawd Vale Colliery Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were working the coal back, close to the shaft, to finish which caused the brickwork to crush a piece of brick falling down the shaft fracturing the deceased's skull. A daily examination of shaft to be made instead of weekly.
FAYLE John - 1897 - 10/05/1897. Snaefell Lead, Snaefell Lead Mining Co. Ltd., Isle of Man. On descending the shaft, to go to their work on a Monday morning, they were overcome by carbonic oxide generated by an underground fire, of which they were wholly unaware. The timber in a level had taken fire accidentally probably from a lighted candle end stuck up against it on the previous Saturday. 19 killed and 5 injured of whom 1 died, 26th May.
FAZACKERLEY Charles (injured) - 1890 - 11/08/1890 – Age 40 – Roadsman. Victoria 7 Foot, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Atherton, Lancashire. Leg broken on the engine plane, by an endless rope, which he was helping to lift off a pulley, his clog having caught in a crossing and prevented him getting out of way.
FEAR John (survivor) - 1895 - 06/02/1895. Timsbury, Samborne Smith and Co., Timsbury, Somerset. A shot which proved to be over charged with powder ignited coal dust and thus caused an extensive explosion. The overcharge resulted from an unseen joint loosening the work which it was intended to do. 7 killed. Widower with a grown up family.
FEAR Joseph - 1891 - 06/08/1891 – Age 5. Clandown, Executors of late Charles Hollwey, Radstock, Somerset. During the school holidays he was playing on the rubbish tip and became entangled in the kitley around which the rope hauling trams was passed.
FEARNLEY Edward - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 55. Coombs, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 139 killed.
FEARNLEY J. - 1895 - 11/05/1895 – Age 21 – Collier. Acton Hall, Acton Hall Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.
FEARNLEY Peter - 1895 - 11/02/1895 – Age 29 – Collier. Yew Tree, Tyldesley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of coal from face, not sufficiently spragged.
FEASBY John - 1890 - 28/10/1890 – Age 43 – Miner. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. A large fall of roof took place while he was engaged making some stone down from the top of the seam.
FEATHER G. - 1897 - 03/12/1897 – Age 35 – Quarryman. Bracken Bank (quarry), C Whiteoak and Son, Yorkshire. Knocked from ledge to bottom of quarry, a distance of about 30 feet, by a fall of earth.
FEATHERSTONE John - 1899 - 05/12/1899 – Age 44 – Miner. Lingdale Ironstone, Pease and Partners Ltd., North Yorkshire. The deputy had cut a baulk hole and was waiting for deceased to take a shot off, preparatory to cutting the hole on the opposite side. The shot was fired and deceased went into the place when a piece of stone fell and killed him.
FEATHERSTONE Matthew - 1898 - 17/11/1898 – Age 15 – Coupler. Newfield, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Skull and arm fractured by falling down the shaft. Died the following day.
FEE Edward - 1893 - 16/08/1893 – Age 60 – Fireman. Hattonrigg No. 3, Summerlee and Mossend Iron and Steel Co., Bellshill, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp while inspecting with open lamp.
FEELEY John - 1891 - 10/04/1891 – Age 28 - Prop drawer. Wigan Junction, Wigan Junction Colliery Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was drawing props with another man and had drawn five or six but whilst drawing another the roof fell upon him. He received injuries to which he succumbed on 22nd April. 9.30 am.

FELLOWS Edward - 1895 - 27/03/1895 – Age 20 - Slate maker. Glynrhonwy (quarry), Glynrhonwy Slate Quarry Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. Explosion of blasting gelatine which his partner had put to thaw in some warm ashes outside the engine house. Killed on the spot.

FELTCHER James - 1895 - 13/02/1895 – Age 15 - Incline boy. Peelwood, Tyldesley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Employed at a shunt to unhook tub from rope, in self acting incline, and attach to rope in downbrow. Manhole not being convenient he stood in roadway, tubs from self acting incline got on wrong road and caught him.

FENTON George William - 1896 - 21/12/1896 – Age 18 – Driver. Barlborough, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was the driver for some workmen engaged in enlarging a roadway. A fall had occurred and deceased was following one of the workmen over the fall when other portions fell and killed him.
FENTON William - 1892 - 22/01/1892 – Age 33 – Dataler. Barlborough, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Staveley, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased stood under the gate lip and with a hammer knocked out a prop when the roof fell on him. Had he used a ringer and chain, in accordance with the Special Rules, his life would in all probability have been saved.
FENWICK John - 1895 - 07/06/1895 – Age 29 – Shifter. Waldridge, Owners of the Waldridge Colliery Co., Co. Durham. Died on rolley way from heart disease for which complaint he had previously been medically treated.
FENWICK Joseph - 1890 - 24/12/1890 – Age 34 – Hewer. Dunston, J Bowes and Partners, Dunston, Co. Durham. He was in the cage coming to the bank when one of the shoes fastened to the guides fell from the surface and went through the cover of the cage. 11.50 pm.

FERGUSON Henry - 1896 - 14/10/1896 – Age 29 – Hewer. Tizwell, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Tizwell, Co. Durham. Inquest attended. He had his hand on the top of his pick shaft when a small piece of stone fell on to him. He died On the 29th October from lock jaw.

FERGUSON Robert - 1899 - 25/12/1899 – Age 22 – Fireman. Longriggend, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was making the statutory examination of the working, before the miners commenced work, when he ignited some firedamp and was suffocated by the afterdamp. A Davy lamp was found near to his body, its bottom was screwed on but not locked and a hole three sixteenth of an inch was discovered in the crown of the inner gauze. An ordinary miners open lamp was found hooked to his cap a few yards off. Ventilation was induced by a furnace which was under deceased's charge during the whole of the previous day after. Two days after the accident the current was unable to turn the vanes of the anemometer in an airway 3 foot by 2 foot 2 inches.

FERN John - 1899 - 23/06/1899 – Age 48 – Stallman. Donnington, Granville Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Fall of roof while he was building cog at side of road near working face in Top Coal. The fall came from between two posts 4 feet apart over unfinished end of pack and rolled over into the road.

FERRIS Duncan - 1897 - 18/03/1897 – Age 16 - Shaft lad. Newbottle, Dorothea Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co. Durham. He left his own work and commenced without permission to onset at a staple bottom and while doing so was crushed between some empty tub and the staple framing and so severely crushed that he died shortly afterwards.
FERRIS Michael - 1897 - 14/06/1897 – Age 20 – Drawer. Edge Green, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was in the drawing road when a piece of rock stone, about 2 feet 6 inches wide, fell from the roof across the roadway upon the deceased. He succumbed to the injuries the following day. The roof which had been considered strong was propped but not barred.

FIELD Charles - 1899 - 18/10/1899 – Age 13 - Collier’s boy. Penrikyber, Penrikyber Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at Face Top Coal 4 feet x 3 feet x 13 inches thick from a back slip while filling coal the bottom, coal had been holed under 15 inches and was not spragged. Died 20th October. Six feet seam.
FIELD Thomas - 1894 - 28/04/1894 – Age 43 – Engineman. Slant End, J Bradley and Co., Kingswinsford, Staffordshire. Crushed against wall of engine house by air pump rod. Died 29th Apr.
FIELD Thomas - 1899 - 23/02/1899 – Age 35 – Miner. Slapeworth Ironstone, Sir B Samuelson and Co. Ltd., North Yorkshire. He and his marrow had a tub partly filled with ironstone and left it spragged up a short distance from the face when a powder shot was fired. A piece of stone, from the shot, hit and broke the sprag which let the tub away. They tried to stop it but found it was too heavy for them and getting out of the way deceased tripped over the rail and the tub wheel ran against his leg. Blood poisoning set in and the leg was amputated but he died on March 9th.

FIELDON James - 1895 - 02/05/1895 – Age 30 – Haulier. Celynen Newport Abercarne, Black Vein Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Returning along the engine plane to the shaft, at the end of his shift, he attempted to jump on a journey
which was in motion, in doing so he missed his footing and fell under the trams receiving injuries from which he died the following night.
FIELDS Mary - 1891 - 03/06/1891 – Age 25 - Waggon trimmer. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection and inquiry made. This woman had to trim waggons and with the intention of getting up on one, on the
brake side, she went between the buffers of a standing waggon and one being lowered by hand and was crushed. She could have gone behind the waggon quite as readily. Female. 11.0 am.
FIELDSEND Pharoah - 1897 - 14/12/1897 – Age 38 – Stallman. Glapwell, Sheepbridge Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Derby. Fall of roof. Deceased and another man were removing slack from the floor for the purpose of setting timber under the roof and between two slips when the roof fell and fatally injured the deceased. He died the same day. The other man was seriously injured.
FILDES Henry - 1898 - 12/01/1898 – Age 21 – Collier. Ashtons Green, Bromilow Foster and Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased had been holing in the coal and had set two sprags when a piece from the loose end fell on him which he had not made secure. He succumbed to the injuries received the following day.

FINCH Heneage - 1894 - 22/06/1894 – Age 50 – Tunneller. Prospect, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Standish, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. While working in front of the bars they fell on the deceased. The fireman had been there an hour previous, passed as safe.
FINCH James - 1893 - 29/12/1893 – Age 52 – Miner. Bunkers Hill, W Rigby and Co., Talk o’th’ Hill, Staffordshire. Fell down a staple pit 20 yds. deep owing to the breakage of a hemp rope.
FINCH Robert - 1893 - 29/12/1893 – Age 67 – Deputy. Moira, Moira Colliery Co., Leicestershire. The deceased was an official of the mine and was responsible for firing the shots. The mode of firing was by germans and the shot appears to have fired directly he lighted the end of the german.

FINCH William - 1896 - 12/12/1896 – Age 31 – Labourer. Haunchwood Tunnel, Sir A Hickman, Warwick. Crushed between two railway waggons. He was pushing at the buffers when the other waggons came up behind and crushed him. He died 23rd Dec.

The overman told deceased and his mates to take down some bad ground. These instructions were attended but apparently the work was not well performed as the fall came from the part of the working which they had been dressing down.

Deceased was engaged roofing down through a step, and had not secured the roof when a stone fell upon him as he was clearing the debris.

They were starting to take out a pillar and failed to secure the roof behind them before starting on the coal. As they advanced with the coal they reached a break in the roof and the whole working place came in upon them. Strong timber should have been set before starting but both men and officials relied on the strength of the unsupported roof. 2 killed.
