MACHIN John Samuel - 1896 - 30/11/1896 – Age 29 – Collier. Newstead, Newstead Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Whilst ascending the upcast shaft, a bar of iron attached to the cover of the top of the shaft broke, and in its fall down the shaft it struck the deceased causing him to fall out of the cage to the bottom of the shaft.

MACHIN Joseph - 1896 - 16/04/1896 – Age 46 – Collier. Clough Hall No. 18, Birchenwood Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Large fall of roof in a place being driven in coal alongside an open goaf. The place collapsed for want of lateral support due to imprudent working.

MACHIN Walter - 1897 - 14/01/1897 – Age 18 – Loader. Tibshelf No. 3 Tupton Coal, Babbington Coal Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. A shot had been fired at the gate end and the two deceased and another man went to clear the rock away when a further and heavier fall of roof occurred and killed both persons. 2 killed.

MACHIN William - 1896 - 27/06/1896 – Age 48 - Shunting guard. Harecastle & Woodshutts, Bidder and Elliot, Staffordshire. He got off a loco. engine drawing three trucks at the rate of 4 miles per hour to turn points. In some unknown way he got under the wheels of the first truck and was run over when the truck got off the rails but either before or after he fell under the wheels, before or after could not be ascertained. The truck and rails were in fairly good order.

MACNAMANA Thomas - 1894 - 23/08/1894 – Age 18 - Haulier. South Wales, Rose Heyworth, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Cwmtillery, Monmouth. Run over by two full trams on sidings which was on an incline. He was bringing them down to where his horse stood and failed to get the sprags into the wheels. In attempting to stop them he in some way got under them.

MADDEN Frederick - 1892 - 01/11/1892 – Age 17 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. He fell on the edge of the stope on which he was working as a tributer with his father and brother. He apparently approached the edge of the stope, to speak to his brother, who had gone down to the level below and overbalancing himself where he died in a few minutes.

MADDISON Robert - 1897 - 26/08/1897 – Age 13 - Water leader. Beamish, Mary James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Beamish, Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was caught at the endless way knock-off. The road was a good one with plenty of room at the side, where he ought to have been walking, and there is no doubt that he had been riding on the rope. It was his second day at this particular work and he had been given instructions, on the previous day, as to his duties, by the man who accompanied him.

MADDISON Thomas - 1890 - 16/12/1890 – Age 25 – Shifter. North Biddick, Sir G Elliot MP, North Biddick, Co. Durham. Suffocated by gasses from old workings. 3 killed.

MADDISON Thomas - 1891 - 11/09/1891 – Age 38 – Deputy. Littleburn, North Brancepeth Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Died from the effects of an accident by fall of stone while following his employment in November 1883. No inquest held.

MADDOCK Peter - 1893 - 17/05/1893 – Age 35 – Collier. Sherdley, Whitecross Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inquiry made and inquest attended. When attempting to get to the cage they were crushing against each other and the deceased, who was carrying his tea can, had it forced into his ribs and although no ribs were broken he died from blood poisoning on the 22nd instant.

MADDOCKS John - 1891 - 19/06/1891 – Age 57 – Dataler. Bersham, Bersham Colliery Co., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased had just finished building a chock and went to sit down at the side of a stone pack when a piece of metal which was overhanging fell upon him and killed him. 2.0 am.

MADDOX John - 1893 - 11/04/1893 – Age 33 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an underground fire. 63 killed.

MADDOX Sydney Thomas - 1894 - 26/09/1894 – Age 16 - Lamp lighter. Silverhill, Stanton Iron Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Deceased was trying to stop a runaway horse near the pit bottom and was knocked down. He died next day.

MAGGS Edward - 1896 - 30/04/1896 – Age 26. Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp, 63 killed.

MAGGS William - 1897 - 08/10/1897 – Age 21 – Collier. Tredegar, Monmouth. Died on the 10th February. He is alleged to have knocked his knee against a tram. He worked a few turns after the accident but being in a weak state of health and consumptive was obliged to give up working. The doctor did not consider the accident in any way connected with the cause of death and I have therefore treated it as not comprised.

MAGOR William (injured) - 1890 - 10/06/1890 – Age 24 – Labourer. East Darren (metalliferous). Leg badly bruised by a cask of cement falling from a hand barrow which he and another man were carrying. Nine and a half weeks off.

MAHER John (injured) - 1891 - 12/06/1891 – Age 50 – Miner. Jarrow No. 5, Joseph Dobbs, Cloneen, Ireland. Hand injured by coal where he was holing. Inspection and inquiry.

MAHON William (non-fatal) - 1891 - 02/07/1891 – Age 30 – Fireman. Roughcraig, Stand Coal Co., Lanarkshire. Explosion of shot, 12 days off.

MAINWAREING William - 1893 - 19/12/1893 – Age 37 – Collier. Hem Heath, Hem Heath Mining Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fall of ironstone while he was holing in the Red Mine. It should have been better spragged. Died 29th December 1893.

MAINWARING Samuel - 1892 - 25/10/1892 – Age 36 – Stallman. Pilsley, Pilsley Colliery Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fell down on a heap of slack and expired. Died from heart disease. No inquest.

MAINWARING Thomas - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Age 45 – Repairer. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

MAIR David - 1892 - 26/03/1892 – Age 35 – Miner. Windyledge No. 1, WCS Cuninghame, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.

MAIR James - 1898 - 14/10/1898 – Age 44 – Fireman. Toms Forest Granite Quarry, John Fyfe, Aberdeen. Deceased and his brother were engaged clearing out some debris from a back in the granite, in order to put in a charge of gunpowder, when the rock fell away; they both jumped, but deceased was overtaken and fatally crushed.

MAIR John (non-fatal) - 1891 - 18/08/1891 – Engineman. Bardykes, Merry and Cuninghame, Newton, Lanarkshire. Hand caught between pinion wheels of washing machine.

MAIR John - 1891 - 22/09/1891 – Age 45 – Miner. Broomhouse, Haughead Coal Co., Mount Vernon, Lanarkshire. Fall of mid stone.

MAITLAND James - 1897 - 26/04/1897 – Age 19 – Craneman. Dyce Granite (quarry), A and F Manuelle, Aberdeen. Deceased was incautiously passing underneath a large block of granite, which was being raised by a steam crane, when the sling chain broke and the stone fell upon him from a height of about 50 feet.

MAJOR David - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 45 – Pumpman. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

MAKEPEACE JJ - 1891 - 23/06/1891 – Age 16 - Timber leader. Burnhope, UA Ritson, Lanchester, Co. Durham. Broken leg by fall of stone while assisting deputy to draw a jud in brokens; the stone fell from a parting. Died on 24th. 1.0 pm.

MAKEPEACE John - 1897 - 05/05/1897 – Age 53 – Hewer. Bewicke Main, Charles Perkin and Partners Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. A large stone fell on him from distinct slips in the shape of a triangle. The deputy was in the place fifteen minutes before and examined the place fully leaving it in what he considered in a safe working condition.

MAKER Thomas - 1898 - 16/06/1898 – Age 44 – Miner. Gawton Arsenic Devon, Gawton Co. Ltd., Devon. Fall of roof from the hanging struck and caused him to fall the stull, a distance of 18 feet. He died on the 3rd July.

MAKIN Abel (injured) - 1890 - 10/02/1890 – Age 28 - Prop taker. Brookside 4 Foot, Unsworth and Cowburn, Westhoughton, Lancashire. Injured by roof falling when drawing props.

MAKIN Robert (injured) - 1891 - 12/12/1891 – Age 40 – Miner. Foxholes, William and Robert Marland, Hollinwood, Lancashire. Leg broken by the gigging chain, he having put his full tub into the brow to gig without an empty tub being on at the bottom. Inspection and inquiry.

MAKINSON Edward - 1890 - 22/10/1890 – Age 27 – Miner. Blainscough Hall 6 foot, Blainscough Hall Colliery Co., Coppull, Lancashire. Killed by a fall of side breaking down the timbering as they were going in. The ground was on the move and caution had been given to keep back. 2 killed.

MAKINSON Ellen - 1894 - 17/10/1894 – Age 18 - Tub cleaner. Crawford, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Aspull, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. There were some tubs standing at the top of the wooden inclined stage and the deceased appears to have pushed one over and got in front to try to stop it when it overpowered her and causing such injuries that she died on the 31st instant. Female.

MALCOLM James - 1896 - 29/05/1896 – Age 19 – Miner. Lochhead, Lochhead Fireclay Co., Fife. Fall of fireclay by longwall.

MALCOLM Thomas - 1899 - 18/05/1899 – Age 36 – Sinker. Polkemmet, John Nimmo and Sons Ltd., Linlithgow. The accident occurred in a sinking pit. Deceased and two other sinkers were preparing to fire several shots, and prior to lighting these shots a canvas pipe was sent to the surface, fixed by a sling chain. On arriving there the pipe was detached and the chain was thrown into the shaft, the weight of which was to take the winding rope down to the bottom. By mistake the chain had also been detached from the rope and it fell to the bottom and struck deceased.

MALCOM James (non-fatal) - 1890 - 21/07/1890 – Miner. Pennyvennie No. 2, Dalmellington Iron Co., Dalmellington, Ayrshire. Fall of roof at face.

MALE Samuel - 1897 - 10/03/1897 – Age 24 – Collier. Cwmbran, Patent Nut and Bolt Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fatally run over and crushed on the endless chain haulage road, having stumbled and fallen in front of a loaded tram while attempting to put his mandrill on it. The tram passed over him inflicting internal injuries from which he died in about twenty minutes.

MALE William - 1895 - 19/04/1895 – Age 30 – Brakesman. North’s Wyndham, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Glamorgan. Run over by an empty wagon, the last of three which he was bringing down a siding having apparently fallen off the brake lever.

MALLETT John - 1897 - 05/08/1897 – Age 17 – Driver. South Moor, Hedley South Moor Colliery Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. When coming outbye, with a full set, his pony stumbled and caught and displaced some timber causing a fall of stone from the roof which killed him.

MALLEY James (injured) - 1894 - 23/10/1894 – Age 34 – Labourer. Mossfield, W Rigby and Co., Longton, Staffordshire. Arm broken by clack box of pump in blocks striking him.

MALLIE Alexander (non-fatal) - 1893 - 11/10/1893 – Age 19 – Miner. Cambusnethan, Thomas Barr, Lanarkshire. Explosion of gunpowder. 2 injured.

MALLIE William - 1891 - 29/07/1891 – Age 26 – Miner. Dalziel, Wishaw Coal Co., Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal.

MALLIN Eli - 1895 - 31/01/1895 – Age 30 – Pikeman. Netherton, Old M and W Grazebrook, Worcestershire. Fell form cage when ascending.

MALL INCHES Edward - 1893 - 12/07/1893 – Age 57 – Hewer. Watergate, Flimby Colliery Co., Flimby, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was assisting a putter to lift his full tub on to the rails when he slipped and fell and afterwards left the pit complaining of a pain in the chest. He died a few days afterwards from a ruptured lung.

MALLON John - 1898 - 02/04/1898 – Age 20 – Bottomer. Kenmuirhill No. 4, Dunn Bros., Lanarkshire. Thinking the cage was at the midworking he opened the gate pushed a hutch into the open shaft and fell after it. The indicator in the enginehouse was not in order.

MALLY John - 1898 - 06/07/1898 – Age 63 – Labourer. Clara Street Sandstone Quarry, Joseph Collinson, Northumberland. Enquiries made. He turned round to speak to another workman, and missing his footing he fell off the ledge on which he was working. Although he only fell a distance of five or six feet the injuries terminated fatally on the 10th July.

MALONE John - 1890 - 29/10/1890 – Age 27 – Collier. Main Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. As he was taking his tub to rise shunt a stone fell from between the bars and crushed his head against the tub.

MALONE Peter - 1895 - 14/09/1895 – Age 40 – Collier. Lea Green, Sutton Heath & Lea Green Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made, and inquest attended. The fireman, lighting the fuse of a shot without sufficiently examining the place caused the gas present at the face to explode causing injuries to himself and the deceased who succumbed to the injuries received on the 20th instant. The brattice at the time was 6 feet from the face, and the gas collected on examination afterwards with the brattice to that point.

MALOONEY Jeremiah - 1895 - 01/03/1895 – Age 39 – Shackler. Penrikber, Penrikber Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. A journey of five trams, of ashes, was being drawn up the rubbish tip incline when one of the shackles opened and four of the teams ran wild and caught the deceased at the bottom. He had neglected to attach the bar-hook.

MALPAS William - 1895 - 03/07/1895 – Age 48 – Collier. Lewis’ Merthyr, Bertie Lewis, Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of top coal and little stone in face or heading in four feet seam. He was about to take the Top Coal down and fix a pair of timbers under this roof when it suddenly fall upon him.

MALT George Herbert - 1897 - 03/01/1897 – Age 18 – Putter. Byers Green, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Injured by catching his foot against a sleeper and died from effects on the 20th.

MANDERS George - 1894 – 23/06/1894 – Age 32 – Haulier. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

MANDRY or MAINWAIRING Noah - 1890 – 10/03/1890 – Collier. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

MANGNALL James - 1896 – 21/12/1896 – Age 65 – Dataler. Leycett Fair Lady, Madeley Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof while retimbering in a crut. The fireman had told him to sprag a piece of overhanging stone before doing anything else but while his mate was getting the sprag he continued to work under the stone and it fell on him.

MANKERVIS Thomas - 1893 - 09/10/1893 – Age 48 – Miner. North Stank, Barrow Haematite Steel Co. Ltd., Stank, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased and another man were working on a cradle in the shaft, when the crab rope, which was made of hemp and unfit for use, broke and deceased fell to the bottom a distance of about 36 fathoms.

MANLEY John - 1891 - 05/05/1891 – Age 17 – Labourer. Glyn, Glamorgan Colliery Co. Ltd., Llantrissant, Glamorgan. Riding in empty journey on engine plane. A shackle pin came out, just as the journey was leaving the surface, six trams running wild down the drift dipping 1 in 4. Riding is prohibited and the rider had warned the deceased and caused him to get out but he jumped in again as the journey started.

MANN Charles - 1892 - 14/12/1892 - 14 - Lasher on. Bamfurlong Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Underground fire. 16 killed.

MANN H. - 1899 - 08/05/1899 – Age 14 – Driver. Don Pedro, H Briggs Sons and Co., Yorkshire. Run over by tubs on inclined plane. Died 14th May.

MANN John (non-fatal) - 1891 - 13/07/1891 - Stone picker. Auchinraith, Merry and Cuninghame, Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Hand crushed between pinion wheels in connection with coal picking table.

MANN Joseph Henry - 1890 - 15/01/1890 – Age 16 – Gangrider. Ashtonfield, Cannel Bridgewater Trustees, Little Hulton, Lancashire. Killed by his train of tub waggons running over him in the west engine brow his foot having apparently caught near a pulley and dragged him off his seat.

MANN Joshua - 1892 - 14/12/1892 – Age 42 – Collier. Bamfurlong Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Underground fire. (James Towey died on the 15th Dec) 16 killed.

MANNERING William - 1891 - 14/05/1891 – Age 45 – Metalman. Ashton Moss 4 Foot, Ashton Moss Colliery Co. Ltd., Audenshaw, Lancashire. Downes died 15th and Manering the contractor 19th from injuries on firing a shot in the Return Air, the explosive ordered to be used being securite but supposed to be compressed powder. 2 killed 2 other persons injured. Inspection made inquest attended.

MANNERS Joseph - 1894 - 03/07/1894 – Age 16 – Wagon greaser. Oakenshaw, Strakers and Love, Willington, Co. Durham. Riding on a waggon where he had no business to be, he fell off and was run over.

MANSELL George - 1890 - 03/12/1890 – Age 56 – Dataler. New Hucknall Low Main, New Hucknall Colliery Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof. Repairing a roadway and whilst taking out old timbers other timbers gave way causing a large fall of roof.

MANSFIELD George - 1890 - 04/08/1890 – Age 62 – Gateman. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co. Ltd., Leigh, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was under a waggon, putting up the bottom door, when some other waggons bumped against it and he fell under the wheel.

MANSFIELD John William - 1898 - 09/11/1898 – Age 19 - Train runner. Blackwell, A Blackwell Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased was riding on a set of 26 full tubs, up an engine plane, when he appears to have lost his light and in trying to reach the signal wires, to stop the train, he fell under the tubs and was run over.

MANUEL Edward - 1893 - 26/06/1893 – Age 65 – Collier. Ffrwd, James Sparrow and Son, Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was sitting against the coal face, watching his son drawing a prop in the pack, when a piece of coal and caunch fell from the roof, from between three slips. They should have secured the roof near face before attempting to take the back props out.

MANUEL John - 1895 - 04/06/1895 – Age 75 – Platelayer. Ocean Gawr, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Run over by a wagon and locomotive on the surface railway. Died 15th June, after amputation of arm.

MAPSTONE Frederick - 1899 - 28/01/1899 – Age 30 – Collier. Abercarn Prince of Wales, United National Collieries Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. Fall of coal from the face. Having holed the coal he appears to have tried to get it down and failing to do so he resumed holing without sprags. On reaching a slip the coal fell over on him.

MARBETH William - 1896 – 04/03/1896 – Age 18 – Haulier. Ocean Western, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While riding on gun in front of loaded tram his head came in contact with a collar, where the height was reduced from 7 foot 2 inches to 5 foot 11 inches, and was crushed between it and the coal on the tram.

MARBURY Oliver - 1890 – 24/01/1890 – Age 17 – Trimmer. Talk o’th’ Hill, Talk o’th’ Hill Colliery Co., Talk, Staffordshire. While working on the top of a full waggon, at screens, it was bumped by other waggons, owing to deficient brake power. He was knocked off and run over. Died 25th January.

MARCROFT Adam (injured) - 1890 – 14/06/1890 – Age 27 – Sinker. Great Lever No. 1, Earl of Bradford, Great Lever, Lancashire. Injured by a charge of powder going of whilst they were wrongfully undrilling it in a sinking pit, the electric battery having failed to explode the shot 2 injured.

MARGINSON George - 1899 – 10/03/1899 – Age 17 – Taker off. Linnyshaw, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Crushed by haulage rope and lashing chain, the latter having caught in a rail and pulled it up; the lashing chain allowed to go round the power wheels, contrary to orders given.

MARGISON J. - 1898 - 22/02/1898 – Age 38 - Collier. Corton Wood, Corton Wood Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of side.

MARKS David - 1897 - 15/09/1897 – Age 13 – Signaller. Cefn Slip, Bryndu Coal and Coke Co., Glamorgan. Crushed by fun journey, under which he fell in attempting to jump on to rope.

MARKS Thomas (non-fatal) - 1891 - 06/04/1891 – Reddsman. Newton No. 2, James Dunlop and Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp.

MARLAND Edwin - 1894 - 17/07/1894 – Age 36 – Fireman. Broad Oak, Broad Oak Colliery Co. Ltd., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Whilst a train of empties being lowered down engine brow, by break to drum, break strap broke. Uncontrolled the train ran away with the rope which came off the drum. The brow inclination 1 in 2. The rope went down the brow some distance caught deceased who was sliding on one of the rails after the train.

MARLEY John - 1894 - 21/12/1894 – Age 60 – Backoverman. Bedlington, Doctor Bedlington Coal Co. Ltd., Bedlington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Fall of stone. Some tubs ran amain owing to the welding of a link opening out. They smashed the runaway switch and jumped the rails at the points, knocking out the props from under the baulks at the junction of the full and empty roads. Deceased after examining the roof, which he thought shaken but good enough to work under for the time being, started to get the tubs on the road when the fall came away from a slip and buried him.

MARLEY Thomas - 1897 - 14/06/1897 – Age 28 – Deputy. Newton Cap, Henry Stobart and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. While drawing a jud a stone fell from a slip in the roof and crushed and killed him.

MARLEY William - 1898 - 23/08/1898 - 56 – Screener. West Wylam, Mickley Coal Co., Northumberland. Inspection made. The deceased crossing the railway when he was run over by a locomotive. He had come out of a cabin, and had evidently not taken the precaution to see whether anything was approaching.

MARLOW Reuben - 1897 - 12/05/1897 – Age 40 – Labourer. Kinson Clay (quarry), Kinson Pottery Co. Ltd., Dorset. Smothered by a run of sand which was 40 or 50 feet high above the clay. It was improperly worked being too perpendicular and I had called attention to the matter 5 or 6 months before. The coroner, by mistake, did not give me notice of the inquest, but he realised the dangerous method of working.

MARLOW William Thomas - 1896 - 22/08/1896 – Age 21 – Boatman. Griff, Griff Colliery Co., Warwick. Crushed between waggons at the canal wharf, which is situated about three-quarters of a mile from the mine. Deceased was not in the employ of the Colliery Company.

MARR Thomas (non-fatal) - 1892 - 08/07/1892 – Fireman. Meiklehill No. 4, Meiklehill Coal Co., Kirkintilloch, Ayrshire. Explosion of firedamp. 2 injured.

MARRINER James - 1892 - 22/09/1892 – Age 27 – Hewer. Usworth, John Bowes and Partners, Usworth, Co. Durham. Inquiries made. A heavy fall of roof from slips at the face he was hewing.

MARRIOT Sam (rescued) - 1896 - 30/04/1896 – Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp 63 killed.

MARRIOTT John - 1898 - 07/09/1898 – Age 32 – Labourer. Eppleton, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. By some means he displaced the fence and fell from the pit heap, a vertical height of 22 feet to the level of the branches below, and seriously injured his head. Died the same day.

MARRIOTT Robey - 1894 - 12/04/1894 – Age 18 - Horse driver. Silver Hill Low Main Coal, Stanton Iron Co. Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Whilst conveying eight full tubs of coal, along a roadway, he appears to have fallen down and the horse and tub passed over him.

MARRIOTT William - 1892 - 01/02/1892 – Age 21 – Collier. Moorgreen, Barber Walker and Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. He died from spitting blood stated to have commenced in the mine after eating his food. No accident or injury to the deceased and no inquest held. The doctor certified death was due to haemoptysis.

MARRIOTT William - 1896 - 26/11/1896 – Age 14 – Driver. Blackwell, B Blackwell Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof, whilst sitting on the side of a roadway, waiting for trams, a piece of rock fell from the roof and fatally injured the deceased. He died the same day.

MARROW William - 1896 - 05/12/1896 – Age 60 – Sinker. Robin Hood, Flimby & Broughton Moor Coal & Firebrick Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The downcast shaft was being deepened. The banksmen wrongfully used a loose piece of wood to prop the tram and this piece of wood working loose fell down the shaft and hit the deceased.

MARSDEN Alfred - 1892 - 09/05/1892 – Age 23 – Fitter. Bolsover, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Endeavouring to put a belt on to a pulley, whilst in motion, he was drawn into the pulley and fatally injured. Died May 12th.

MARSDEN Dennis - 1898 - 07/05/1898 – Age 65 – Joiner. Portsmouth Brickworks Quarry, Brooks and Pickup, Lancashire. Fell from an elevated tramway :30 feet.

MARSDEN John - 1896 – 17/01/1896 – Age 62 – Collier. Moss No. 2, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inquiry made. He was engaged moving dirt, which he had drawn down when some dirt and coal fell from a slip fracturing his leg and causing other injuries, to which he succumbed on September 29th.

MARSDEN John - 1899 – 03/02/1899 – Age 71 – Stallman. Coleorton, Coleorton Colliery Co., Leicestershire. Deceased expired at home, three weeks after receiving a slight injury in the mine. An inquest was held, when the jury returned a verdict of ‘death from natural causes’ as proved by a post-mortem examination.

MARSDEN John Henry - 1898 – 22/06/1898 – Age 23 – Hewer. New Brancepeth, Cochrane and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. He was hewing in the face of a broken lift when a large stone fell from between two slips displaced the timbers underneath it and killed him.

MARSDEN William - 1891 – 03/08/1891 – Age 45 – Miner. Hoddlesden, Joseph Place and Sons, Hoddlesden, Lancashire. Found dead in his place, roof having fallen and killed him. Inspection and inquiry.

MARSDEN William - 1892 - 08/06/1892 – Age 41 – Deputy. Whitburn, Harton Coal Co. Whitburn, Co. Durham. Inquiries made. In ascending or descending a staple a deputy who was with the deceased slipped and fell on to him. They were making an inspection of the mine previous to the pit starting work. Marsden died 30th Mar.

MARSDEN William George - 1895 - 19/09/1895 - Age 32 – Stallman. Renishaw Park No. 2, J and G Wells Ltd., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was in a heading wedging coal down when the roof fell upon him.

MARSEN Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 15/05/1890 – Age 47 – Miner. Cranberry Lane, Ralph Entwistle and Co. Ltd., Over Darwin, Lancashire. Burned by cartridges, igniting at their candles, whilst preparing a shot in a stone drift 2 injured.

MARSH A - 1899 - 07/08/1899 – Age 19 – Byeworkman. Whitwood, H Briggs Sons and Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Died 9th Aug.

MARSH Benjamin - 1890 - 18/03/1890 – Age 48 – Stallman. Grassmoor, Grassmoor Colliery Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of coal. Whilst he was getting down coal it fell upon him. Injured 6th December 1889. Died 18th Mar 1890.

MARSH Enoch - 1891 - 18/12/1891 – Age 14 - Points boy. Himley, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcestershire. Found dead upon rail after train of full trucks had passed the incline.

MARSH James - 1894 - 05/09/1894 – Age 14 - Lasher on. The Park, J and R Stone, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased had unhooked the lashing chain, from the tubs on the motion brow, when the hook got fast in a sleeper, which caused the rails to spring across the road and struck the deceased causing internal injuries that he died the following day. Lashing on stations will be boarded between the sleepers in future.

MARSH John - 1891 - 10/04/1891 – Age 48 - Engine tenter. Nook Jubilee Pumping Worsley 4 foot, Astley and Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Astley, Lancashire. Killed by the fly-wheel, of the underground pumping engine when inside the fence, apparently cleaning the engine. Inspection and inquest attended.

MARSH John - 1892 - 10/02/1892 – Age 32 – Sinker. Brackley, Bridgewater Trustees, Middle Hulton, Lancashire. Deceased and seven others being lowered in the cage were dashed to the bottom, thrown down, head of deceased was cut off, on cage rebounding between cage and portion of landing. Engineman alleged that the foot break did not act when be tried to put it in operation, that he then applied the steam break. Very probably the real cause was his making a mistake and in giving the engine steam, thinking he was shutting it off.

MARSH John - 1892 - 28/12/1892 – Age 28 – Collier. Ravenhead, St. Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inquest attended. The deceased was working in a ribbing, he had his bars within 30 inches of the face when some roof coal fell between the bar and face. He succumbed to the injuries received on Jan. 23, 1893.

MARSH Joseph - 1892 - 18/07/1892 – Age 20 – Driver. Hall End, Hall End Colliery Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Fall of timber in a gate-road through tub getting off the rails.

MARSH Matthew - 1892 - 17/11/1892 – Age 52 - Loco. Driver. Park, J and R Stone, Ashton, Lancashire. Inquiry made. The deceased fainted and in falling his head came in contact with some steel girders which were supporting an old locomotive in the engine shed causing injuries to his head that he died the following day.

MARSH Thomas (non-fatal) - 1894 - 08/05/1894 – Age 50 – Fireman. Pentland & Straiton, Clippens Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Explosion of firedamp.

MARSH Thomas - 1891 - 07/12/1891 – Age 16 – Drawer. Ravenhead, St. Helens Colliery Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The working place was 6 yards wide and no timber within 12 feet of the face. Fireman said he told the collier to set some props but did not wait to see him start to do it. The man never set them, and the roof fell on his son and killed him. Breach of Special Rules by the fireman. 8.0 am.

MARSH W. - 1898 - 05/11/1898 – Age 20 - Engine driver. Field Head Sandstone Quarry, G Smith and Sons, Yorkshire. Supposed to have overbalanced and fallen into the quarry while attending to the crane boiler fire.

MARSH William - 1899 - 13/04/1899 – Age 24 - Engine tenter. Croftside, Darcey Lever Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Scalded by steam, from steam pipe joint, whilst about to remedy India rubber ring blew out.

MARSHALL Albert - 1891 - 25/06/1891 – Age 47 – Sinker. King Sinking, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased men had just finished their meals and were descending the shaft to resume their work when in the descent it is supposed that the hoppet struck a bearer in the shaft and overturned, the four men falling to the bottom, a distance of about 60 yards. The engineman appears to have applied his brake too suddenly this would probably have the effect of chucking hoppet and causing it to get out of the centre of the shaft, 4 killed. 6.15 pm.

MARSHALL Alexander - 1891 - 29/09/1891 – Age 33 – Collier. Bathville, James Wood, Linlithgow. Fall of coal.

MARSHALL Alexander - 1897 - 16/12/1897 – Age 23 – Miner. Grangemouth, Grangemouth Coal Co. Ltd., Stirling. Deceased was taking off coal, when the roof fell upon him.

MARSHALL B. - 1891 - 15/12/1891 – Age 47 – Collier. Low Stubbin, Earl Fitzwilliam, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

MARSHALL David - 1897 - 08/12/1897 – Age 41 – Brusher. Barrwood No. 2, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Stirling. Fall of roof at roadhead while brushing the pavement.
