IBALL Edward - 1897 - 05/10/1897 – Age 67 – Foreman. Etna Clay Quarry, R Ashton and Co., Flint. Unexpected fall of clay from the working face, 25 feet above him. Died following day. Another man had his leg bruised.
ICETON James - 1899 - 01/07/1899 – Age 29 – Blacksmith. Etherley Grange, Sir B Samuelson and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. These two men were repairing siphon pipes in the upcast shaft and for the purpose had a baulk across the shaft at the top of the Busty Seam level and when they were standing on it, it broke and they fell to the Bottom Busty, distance of 28 yards, and were killed. 2 killed.

ILEY George - 1899 - 08/05/1899 – Age 59 – Stoneman. Blaydon Burn, Owners of Priestman Colliery, Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was knocked down a staple by a set of full tubs which he had carelessly neglected to secure before taking away the first one to put into the cage. Another man who was loading timber on the cage at the staple bottom was also injured.

ILWAIN H.M. (non-fatal) - 1894 - 20/06/1894 – Age 16 – Miner. Eddlewood, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof. 20 days off.
IMSWORTH John - 1895 - 26/06/1895 – Age 37 – Collier. Scot Lane, William Woods and Son, Lancashire. In working place alongside a fault, from between two clips at right angles to fault slips, ought to have been men. Fall 18 feet long 6 feet wide. Three props set along face might have prevented. 2 killed.
INCE Peter - 1897 - 17/08/1897 – Age 30 – Brakesman. The Park, J and R Stone, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The locomotive was shunting 28 empty wagons into the siding and the deceased is supposed to have fallen under the wagons when attempting to put one of the brakes down.
INCH William (non-fatal) - 1892 - 22/10/1892 – Age 36 – Miner. Westfield (metalliferous), William Baird and Co., Edinburgh. Fall of limestone.
INGHAM Edward - 1892 - 09/03/1892 – Age 41 – Sinker. Summerhill, Westminster & Brymbo Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. A small piece of rock fell from the side of the shaft, above them, which they had not made secure when widening the shaft. Deceased was in the act of filling the hoppit when he was struck.
INGHAM William - 1897 - 06/02/1897 – Age 38 – Hewer. Wooley, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co. Durham. Killed by fall of stone from roof of his working place which fell away at two slips without any warning.
INGLEBY John - 1896 - 08/10/1896 – Age 46 – Stallman. Whateley, Hockley Hall and Whateley Colliery Co., Warwick. Fall of roof. Deceased was knocking prop out with a hammer when a large quantity of roof fell and killed him. Had he used a ringer and chain for the purpose, as provided by the rules, his life would have been saved.

INWOOD William - 1890 - 24/03/1890 – Age 36 – Sawyer. Blackwell, Blackwell Colliery Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Drawn into a belt pulley. Was trying to put a belt upon the pulley, whilst it was in motion contrary to the rule of the Colliery. He should have stopped the engine.

IRELAND Hannah Mary - 1899 - 01/03/1899 – Age 17 - Coal picker. Buckhill, Allerdale Coal Co. Ltd., Cumberland, Inspection made and inquest attended. While improperly passing across, picking belt in motion, the deceased fell on the edge of the frame and received injuries from which she died on March 11th. Female.

IRELEASE William - 1891 - 02/12/1891 – Age 65 – Miner. Killifreth (metalliferous), Killifreth Mining Co., Scorrier, Cornwall. He was holding the "fall," or end of chain, by which four men at a winch were letting down a roller to the Adit level. He allowed too much slack which resulted in a jerk. He in some way got entangled in the coils and was drawn to the barrel of the winch and so injured that he died on his way to the hospital.

IRVINE Samuel (non-fatal) - 1892 - 24/11/1892 – Chainrunner. Cadder No. 16, Carron Co., Maryhill, Lanarkshire. Fell off race while riding up the dook.
IRVING Charles - 1898 - 02/07/1898 – Age 62 - Loco. Driver. Broadrigg, John Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Stirling. Owing to the breaking of a coupling, a train of thirty nine empty trucks ran away on the main line, and collided with the Colliery locomotive which was shunting at the siding. The locomotive driver and brakesman were both very seriously injured the former succumbing to his injuries on the same day.
IRVING James - 1893 - 08/05/1893 – Age 37 – Stoneman. Walker, Walker Coal Co. Ltd., Walker, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. After drilling a hole in the top caunch on a waggon way and knocking out some props he foolishly went under the stone to knock more props out when a fall took place killing him. He could easily have knocked the props out without going under the caunch.
IRVING John - 1897 - 11/02/1897 – Age 19 – Putter. Felling, J Bowes and Partners Ltd., Co. Durham. Inquest attended. He appears to have sprained his back when lifting a full tub at the gate to help his pony to get a start, but it was not considered serious, nevertheless in a few days he had to be taken to the infirmary and died there on March 14th.
IRVING John - 1899 - 04/02/1899 – Age 19 – Labourer. Woodend Iron Ore, James Bain and Co., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The last of a set of five empty bogies had left the rails near the top of a selfacting inclined plane. In replacing this bogie it was accidentally detached from the set and running amain down the incline it struck the deceased. A manhole was close to him but instead of entering it, he in the excitement of the moment ran straight on. An improved coupling has since been introduced.
IRVING Joseph - 1899 - 28/04/1899 – Age 59 – Hewer. Broughton Moor, Flimby & Broughton Moor Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attend. He had just commenced to kirve at the longwall face when a stone (cauldron bottom) 4.5 foot diameter fell without any warning. The place had been inspected before and during the shift and was apparently well timbered.
IRVING William - 1890 - 12/05/1890 – Age 20 – Trailer. Glebe (metalliferous), Cleator Glebe Mining Co., Cleator, Cumberland. Fall of stone. The piece of stone that fell was examined by the overman at 7 a.m. of the day of the accident and finding it very bad he ordered Cullender to take it down. Cullender did not do so and allowed Irving to work under it. About 11.30 a.m. it fell and killed both the men. The overman did not go to see his orders were obeyed although the place was only a short distance from the shaft 2 killed.
ISAAC Abrahm - 1891 - 29/10/1891 – Age 18 – Labourer. Ocean, Eastern Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Ystrad Rhondda, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (strong clift) from between two unseen slips, 5 foot apart, running back from face to gob 12 foot distant. There were two rows of props (?) foot between in row but no prop happened to be under the part which fell. Bute seam 4 foot thick. Long wall.
ISAAC David - 1895 - 01/11/1895 – Age 68 – Labourer. Garth Merthyr, Garth Merthyr Colliery Co., Glamorgan. While upsetting a tram of rubbish his foot slipped and he fell down the tip injuring his scalp. Died of meningitis on 9th November.
ISAAC David J. - 1892 - 21/05/1892 – Age 15 – Shackler. Gwaun-cae-gurwen, Gwaun-caegurwen Colliery Co. Ltd., Brynaman, Glamorgan. Crushed between loaded tram while attempting to uncouple them before they had stopped parting.
ISAAC John - 1892 - 29/12/1892 – Age 42 – Fireman. Naval, Naval Colliery Co. Ltd., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road while clearing fall.
ISAAC William - 1894 - 21/04/1894 – Age 46 – Collier. Fernhill, Fernhill Merthyr Collieries Co., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Fatally injured by a fall of roof (cliff 9.5 feet x 3 to 6 feet and 15 inches thick) off a slip. A small fault ran through the roof at the spot making it weak and dangerous. There was a row of props from 3 to 6 feet back from the face but none under the roof, which fell. Died 22nd April. Yard seam.
ISHERWOOD William - 1894 - 24/12/1894 – Age 42 – Collier. Hewlett No. 2, Wigan Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Westhoughton, Lancashire. Fall of overhanging ley from face ought to have been pulled down. Had been trying to get it down yet stood before it when it fell and struck him on the back.
ISHERWORTH Thomas - 1898 - 13/06/1898 – Age 50 – Collier. Clifton Hall, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of coal from face. Insufficiently spragged.
ISLES Charles - 1891 - 28/04/1891 – Age 25 – Repairer. South Wales, Lancaster Speir and Co., Cwmtillery, Monmouth. Fall of roof. He was engaged assisting timbering while enlarging a heading which was crushed and while his comrade was preparing timber for setting he occupied himself, under some of the old timbers, filling out rubbish. A fall occurred which knocked these timbers out and crushed him.
ISON A. - 1891 - 07/08/1891 – Age 22 – Tinner. Glass Houghton, TH Thorpe, Pontefract Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 2 killed. Died 8th.
ISSOT J. - 1892 - 08/06/1892 – Age 27 – Byeworkman. Flockton, Miles Stansfield and Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.
IVEL John - 1898 - 18/02/1898 – Age 40 – Collier. Woodpark, Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Whilst removing fallen stone, in working place, a large piece broke off as he was passing under.
IVESON Henry - 1897 - 20/12/1897 – Age 21 – Labourer. Shap (quarry), Shap Granite & Patent Concrete Co. Ltd., Westmoreland, Co. Durham. Run over by a loco. engine on private branch railway. Tetanus supervened and he died on the 17th inst.
IVORY Daniel - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 21 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.
IVORY John - 1895 - 31/05/1895 – Age 37 – Roadsman. Abersychan, Abersychan Elled Steam and House Coal Co. Ltd., Abersychan, Monmouth. Having fired a shot at a double parting where the main road had become too narrow he was filling up the debris into trams when a stone fell from the side and struck his leg causing a compound fracture. His leg was subsequently amputated and he died on May 1st 1895 from the effects.
