This is another instance in which the roof, being strong timber, is not set as closely as it should be to guard against these hidden slips though of frequent occurrence. It was alleged that the deceased met with an accident at the pit while following his occupation on September 18th 1896, but resumed work shortly afterwards. It was also affirmed that in November or December the deceased met with a second accident at the pit. He ran into a prop, and slipping on the ground fell on the side of his face. After the accident deceased said he was knocked sick and his face was swollen. On the day following the accident, the deceased drew two or three tubs less than his usual number on account of being unwell. Deceased had a swollen neck after the accident, but none before. The injury Hamer received was on the left temple close to the eye. The boy went to the surgery several times. Th Doctor attended to him on the 7th of last month, when the case was hopeless. The Condition of the boy he attributed to the disease. The jury retired and handed in their verdict, which was to the effect that death was due to exhaustion resulting from a tumour of the face probably due to an injury received while at work as a drawer about nine months ago. (Accrington Observer, July 17th. 1897).
