JACK Andrew - 1896 - 24/12/1896 - Age 73 – Fireman. Arniston, Arniston Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was riding up an engine dook on one of a set of loaded tubs without having received permission from the manager. A coupling broke near the front of the set which ran back. Deceased jumped or fell off and was killed on the spot.

JACKSON G. - 1898 - 15/07/1898 – Age 20 – Inclineman. Wath Main, Wath Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Run over by Corves on engine plane.

JACKSON George - 1899 - 11/01/1899 – Age 55 – Stallman. Pleasley, Stanton Iron Works Co., Derbyshire. Fall or roof. Deceased went into the gate to pull some stone down which was bad. He went under the stone to examine it and when he knocked the stone it fell and killed him.

JACKSON George William - 1897 - 08/04/1897 – Age 27 – Miner. South Skelton (ironstone), Clay Lane Iron Co. Ltd., N. Yorkshire. Killed instantly by a fall of stone from the roof of his working place.

JACKSON James (non-fatal) - 1894 – 04/10/1894 – Age 40 – Miner. Rochsolloch, Airdrie Coal Co., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

JACKSON James (non-fatal) - 1894 – 10/11/1894 – Age 28 – Brusher. Eddlewood, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof. 42 days off.

JACKSON James - 1895 – 22/02/1895 – Age 23 – Hewer. Andrews House, John Bowes and Partners Ltd., Co. Durham. Inspection and inquest attended. A fall of stone, at a place considered to be safe, occurred on the engine plane and caught deceased as he was going from his work.

JACKSON James - 1896 – 27/01/1896 – Age 25 – Collier. Ferndale Nos 7 & 8, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 57 killed.

JACKSON John - 1899 – 06/12/1899 – Age 27 – Line drawer. Bellman Park Limestone quarry, James Carter and Co., Lancashire. Crushed by waggons on railway siding near lime kiln whilst placing a waggon others bumped up and crushed him. Rashly concluded shunting completed when not so Shunter was brother to deceased.

JACKSON John - 1899 – 29/09/1899 – Age 52 – Deputy. Brancepeth, Strakers and Love, Co. Durham. At the end of his shift he was riding outbye on his small tram and when passing a junction was told the set was coming behind him and he replied ‘all right’. The set shortly afterwards stopped and it was found he was under the third tub quite dead. The train was standing out of the way by the wall side.

JACKSON Jonathan - 1896 – 24/08/1896 – Age 41 – Deputy. Brayton Domain No. 3, Joseph Harris, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. A hewer, not being satisfied with the roof of his place, sought the deceased who after examining it commenced to arrange some props. In doing so he cut a small piece of side stone, when a heavy stone fell on him, slippery partings running all round.

JACKSON Joseph - 1894 - 26/10/1894 – Age 49 – Shifter. Hebburn, A Wallsend and Hebburn Coal Co. Ltd., Hebburn, Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Whilst re-adjusting a prop the baulks above slipped down followed by a fall of stone.

JACKSON Joseph - 1896 - 30/04/1896 – Age 30. Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.

JACKSON Joseph - 1897 - 24/04/1897 – Age 40 – Collier. Victoria, Darcy Lever Colliery Co., Lancashire. Fall of side in working place from a pronounced fault.

JACKSON Joseph - 1898 - 09/02/1898 – Age 14 - Signal boy. Cardenden Sandstone Quarry, Andrew Wilson, Fife. The slewing gear of a steam crane out of order and the slewing was being done by pulling a rope attached to the jib of the crane. Deceased was assisting. A sudden gust of wind blew the jib round, and the deceased held on to the rope too long, and he was pulled into the quarry.

JACKSON Joseph - 1898 - 25/07/1898 – Age 16 – Driver. Bradford, Bradford Colliery Co., Lancashire. Driving a horse along level with full tubs he was missed, he was searched for and found under the first tub. He appears to have fallen off front of first tub.

JACKSON Nicholas Harry - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 24 – Collier. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Pilkington, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place whilst taking out a prop, want of care and protecting props.

JACKSON Richard - 1894 - 19/06/1894 – Age 54 – Cager. Millfield, Patent Shaft and Axeltree Co., Wednesbury, Staffordshire. Fell from inset into sump, a depth of 20 yards.

JACKSON Robert - 1895 - 12/03/1895 – Age 17 – Putter. Burnhope, UA Ritson, Co. Durham. While riding on engine set, against rules, he was crushed to death.

JACKSON Robert - 1896 - 21/01/1896 – Age 51 – Collier. Tyldesley, Astley and Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof coal in working place. Want of props.

JACKSON Samuel - 1897 - 09/01/1897 – Age 34 – Dataller. Silver Hill, Staunton Iron Works Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of side. Deceased and other men were repairing the roadway when a large piece of the side fell and struck deceased.

JACKSON Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 05/02/1890 – Age 34 – Miner. Brackley Dip Tunnel, Black & White, Bridgewater Trustees, Middle Hulton, Lancashire. Head cut and ankle broken by coal from face which he was taking down.

JACKSON Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 22/04/1890 – Age 19 – Drawer. Broomstair, Great Dukinfield Coal and Cannel Co., Haughton, Lancashire. Leg broken by top coal, which was being taken down, rolling upon him.

JACKSON Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 31/07/1890 – Age 34 – Miner. Clifton Hall Trencherbone, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Clifton, Lancashire. Injured by top coal falling.

JACKSON Thomas - 1890 - 21/02/1890 – Age 36 – Bottomer. Jordanhill No. 6, James Dunlop and Co., Maryhill, Lanarkshire. The engineman raised the cage while he was adjusting a hutch on it and crushed him.

JACKSON Thomas - 1898 - 22/01/1898 – Age 26 – Miner. Lindal Moor Iron Ore, Harrison Ainslie and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A large piece of stone fell, without warning, from the side of the working place. It had been examined about an hour previously, and was considered perfectly safe.

JACKSON Thomas A. - 1897 - 20/05/1897 – Age 28 – Deputy. Loftus (ironstone), Pease and Partners Ltd., North Yorkshire. He and his mate were cutting holes to put a baulk of timber into the roof when a piece of top stone fell and injured him fatally.

JACKSON Tinnion - 1898 - 06/12/1898 – Age 60 - Coal washer. Robin Hood, Flimby & Broughton Moor Coal & Firebrick Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. When crossing between two stationary trucks he was crushed between the buffers in consequence of a third waggon being lowered against them. He died the following morning.

JACKSON Walter - 1896 - 30/04/1896 – Age 28 – Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.

JACKSON William - 1890 - 13/04/1890 – Age 61 – Furnaceman. Garswood Hall, Garswood Hall Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was going down the pit on the Sunday afternoon and by some means fell out of the cage and was killed.

JACKSON William - 1892 - 21/11/1892 – Age 30 – Roadsman. Bothwell Park, William Baird and Co., Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Run over by runaway hutches on a haulage road.

JACKSON William - 1892 - 23/02/1892 – Age 15 – Drawer. Butterworth Hall, Platt Bros. and Co. Ltd., Milnrow, Lancashire. Crushed by tub which ran away down slightly inclined road. Deceased was on the empty road and stepped in front of the runaway tub on a full road. Died 1st March.

JACKSON William - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 27. Coombs, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 139 killed.

JACKSON William - 1895 - 03/05/1895 – Age 23 – Drawer. Moss Arley, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. This accident was caused through trusting to scotches to hold the full tubs near top of a jig. The standing tubs were jammed by a drawer letting his tub run against them, which caused them to rush down brow crushing the deceased.

JACKSON William - 1895 - 22/08/1895 – Age 16 – Stoneman. West Wylam, Mickley Coal Co., Northumberland. Inquiry made and inquest attended. Explosion of a gunpowder shot when charging a hole in a stone drift, 2 killed. A third man was injured.

JACKSON William - 1896 - 15/05/1896 – Age 22 – Collier. Tawd Vale, Tawd Vale Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made, and inquest attended. There had been a shot fired at the face, which knocked out one or two props from under the roof and it was not clear whether they had been reset when a fall of roof occurred burying the deceased. The other parts of the working place appeared fairly well timbered.

JACKSON William - 1896 - 28/02/1896 – Age 40 – Quarryman. Hodge Close Slate (quarry), James Stephenson and Co., Coniston, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. deceased was working down some ground with a light crow bar, standing for the purpose on a projecting ledge of rock about 16 inches square. The bar slipped and he fell headmost to the bottom of the quarry, a distance of 21 feet.

JACKSON William - 1897 - 17/04/1897 – Age 52 – Miner. Clifton, William Allerdale Coal Co., Cumberland. Inquest attended. He was riding on a clutch bogie with some other men, contrary to orders, when he lost his hold and fell under the set. It seemed entirely due to the man's own fault.

JACKSON William - 1898 - 08/12/1898 – Age 35 – Collier. Sutton Heath, Sutton Heath & Lea Green Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A fall of roof carried over the landing plate of the drawing road capping three bars and burying the deceased as he was turning his full tub of coal.

JACOB Emanuel - 1893 - 29/07/1893 – Collier, Deep Navigation, Ocean Coal Co., Treharris, Glamorgan. Overstrained himself by pushing a tram. Died on 8th September.

JACOB George - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 40 – Collier. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

JACOB Lewis - 1893 - 11/04/1893 – Age 20 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an underground fire. 63 killed.

JACOBS Thomas - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 18 – Hitcher. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

JACQUES David - 1896 - 19/11/1896 – Age 24 – Hewer. Beamish Air, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Beamish, Co. Durham. Inquest attended. He was just through into the next headways but before doing so was in the act of setting a plank at the face when the stone came away from a sandy parting. As a rule little timber was required for the roof. Died 9th. Mar.

JACQUES Joseph - 1896 - 28/02/1896 – Age 15 – Driver. South Co. Durham. South Co. Durham Coal Co., Co. Durham. He was riding on the limbers, they came off, and he fell in front of the tub and got crushed.

JAMES Albert - 1890 - 15/01/1890 – Age 33 – Collier. Newbury, Westbury Iron Co. Ltd., Coleford, Somerset. Fall of coal from roof, timber and stowed rubbish as he was passing along an air-way. It was probably disturbed by a shot fired in close proximity where a connection was being made from a higher level.

JAMES Albert - 1898 - 16/03/1898 – Age 36 – Collier. Tyning, Earl of Waldegrave, Somerset. Fall of a Cap or Bell stone from the roof in his working place, fatally injured his head.

JAMES Atkinson* - 1899 - 28/08/1899 – Age 15. Blaydon Burn, Joseph Cowpen and Co., Blaydon Burn, Co. Durham.

JAMES Benjamin - 1890 - 27/10/1890 – Age 21 – Haulier. Gelli Steam, Gelli and Tynybedw Colliery Co. Ystrad, Rhondda, Glamorgan. Fall of side (8 feet x 2 feet x 2.5 feet) on heading, ripped up into hard ground which was not timbered. Two-foot nine Longwall.

JAMES Benjamin - 1896 - 04/07/1896 – Age 43 – Rider. Powell’s Lower Duffryn, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed between trams and side of road as journey was leaving the parting, the trams having got off the rails.

JAMES Charles - 1893 - 28/04/1893 – Age 70 – Screenman. Brithdir Dynevor, Duffryn Colliery Co., Neath, Glamorgan. Fatally injured by a lump of coal falling down the screen at which he was engaged. Died 10th May.

JAMES Daniel - 1891 - 16/02/1891 – Age 35 – Collier. Duffryn Main, Main Colliery Co. Ltd., Neath, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (cliff, 8 feet x 7 feet x 28 inches thick) from a slip, close to coal face, in pillar working. Props were set up about 3 foot apart and there appeared to have been four under the portion which fell. Graigola seam 5 foot 5 inches thick. Pillar and stall.

JAMES Daniel - 1897 - 03/02/1897 – Age 25 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. A fall of roof from three straight joints while fetching timber in his stall. Killed instantly.

JAMES David - 1895 - 30/07/1895 – Age 50 – Banksman. Ferndale No. 7, D Davis and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck by landing plate on top of shaft, the cage having caught it owing to jerking caused by the full tram having fallen out just before cage arrived at surface.

JAMES David - 1898 - 12/08/1898 – Age 34 – Electrician. Cleynen Newport, Abercarne Black Vein Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He had been lowered in the cage, to the Black Vein Landing, about 40 yards from the bottom of the shaft and had signalled the cage away. From some unknown cause he fell down the shaft directly afterwards, possibly he overbalanced when leaning over to reach some of the electric wires. He died on the 18th.

JAMES David - 1898 - 13/08/1898 – Age 22 - Engine driver. Balencil Coed quarry Balencil Coed Quarry Co., Pembroke. Killed by falling on crusher, when about to tighten a bolt, the machinery being at the time in motion.

JAMES David - 1898 - 15/02/1898 – Age 19 – Trammer. Weigh Fawr, Philip Richard, Glamorgan. He pushed forward a loaded tram and fell with it front upper landing having apparently forgotten he had signalled away the empty cage. The gate acting as a fence to the shaft was kept open during the sending away of trams.

JAMES David Owen - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 25 – Stoker Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JAMES David R. - 1898 - 05/10/1898 – Age 18 – Haulier. Merthyr Vale, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck by four runaway trams owing to the breaking of a hitching plate. It was discovered that the hitching plate had a flaw in it.

JAMES Elizabeth - 1894 - 30/08/1894 – Age 18 - Coal loader. Whitworth, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. Run over on the branch line, near the coke ovens, while on her way to work in the morning. An engine was pushing an empty colliers carriage in front and it appears to have impeded the outlook. Female.

JAMES Evan - 1894 - 27/09/1894 – Age 37 – Furnaceman. International Anthracite, French Anthracite Co., Abercave, Brecon. Explosion of gas.

JAMES Evan - 1898 - 15/03/1898 – Age 41 – Collier. Ebbw Vale Marine, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof in No. 2 Dip. Heading where he was ripping top, injured his back. He died on the following day.

JAMES Evans - 1893 - 07/09/1893 – Age 34 – Collier. Worcestershire, Phillip Richards, Forestfach, Glamorgan. Deceased and a trammer were about to lower a train, by means of a windlass, down a short incline, when the handle came off and he was pushed down the incline by the tram and killed. Five feet seam.

JAMES George - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 53 – Repairer. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

JAMES George - 1891 - 16/07/1891 – Age 39 – Collier. Kingswood Speedwell, Kingswood and Parkfield Collieries Co. Ltd., Bristol, Gloucester. Ascending the shaft after his day's work, he fell out of the cage when about 50 yards up from the bottom. He was one of six riding in the top deck, there being four more in the bottom deck. Those with him could give no explanation of the matter. They said he was holding the bar, provided for the purpose, when they started and that there was no larking going on. He must have been caught by one of the Byatts and thus pulled out. Everything appears to have been in good order and working smoothly.

JAMES Henry - 1892 - 16/01/1892 – Age 52 – Crutter. Tileries, Trustees of late Thomas Peake, Tunstall, Staffordshire. Fall of roof at face of a crut while getting loose top stone down.

JAMES Henry - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 37 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JAMES Isaac H. - 1892 - 02/11/1892 – Age 16 – Collier. Griffin No. 2, J Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Blaina, Monmouth. He was at the time of the accident in charge of a door on the engine plane. He appears to have been slow in opening the door and the journey carried it away. The rider at once signalled to stop, which was done within 15 to 10 yds. and upon a search being made he was found dead under the trams.

JAMES James ‘Largo’ - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 60 – Repairer. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

JAMES James - 1894 - 01/02/1894 – Age 27 – Collier. Dowlais Black Vein Drift, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. He was working out a slip of coal in the face of a stall road and whilst striking on the wedge a small piece of the wedge flew off and pierced his body at the pit of the stomach, from the effects of which he died 4th. Feb. 1894.

JAMES James - 1896 - 01/05/1896 – Age 50 – Labourer. Aston Bridge Stone (quarry), Colchester Wemyss and Co., Gloucester. A crowbar, with which we was prising out a stone slipped, and in consequence he fell over the edge of the quarry about 25 feet.

JAMES James - 1899 - 09/01/1899 – Shifter. Houghton, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co. Durham. While working in the main coal seam he complained of feeling ill and soon afterwards became unconscious. He was taken home and died the following day. A post-mortem examination was made and it showed that he died from inhaling some noxious gas such as carbonic acid and that his heart was in such a state that he would be affected by a smaller quantity that could be detected by the usual examination of the workings.

JAMES James - 1899 - 10/01/1899 – Age 57 – Shifter. Houghton, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co. Durham. Buried in Houghton Cemetery.

JAMES John (non-fatal) - 1894 - 03/05/1894 – Age 50 – Miner. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mine Adventurers, St. Just, Cornwall. A loose stone which had apparently lodged on a collar or a cross piece fell and cut his head.

JAMES John - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 44 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

JAMES John - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 30 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JAMES John - 1896 - 14/10/1896 – Age 18 – Collier. Ty Trist, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co., Monmouth. When walking out from work, with others, along the engine plane thinking the journey in front of them was going out it approached them, the others got safely into the manholes but deceased, failing to do so, was knocked down and fatally crushed.

JAMES John - 1899 - 01/06/1899 – Age 22 – Rider. Tower, Marquess of Bute, Glamorgan. Slipped when getting off the rope and was run over by a journey of water tanks.

JAMES Joseph - 1894 - 08/02/1894 – Age 50 – Collier. Brynn Hall, Brynn Hall Colliery Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was driving a ribbing in the Wigan Six Feet Seam and neglected to keep a bar near the face, as it advanced, when the roof fell upon him from between two slips.

JAMES Joseph - 1897 - 24/06/1897 – Age 24 – Loader. Titterstone Basalt Quarry, Field and McKay, Shropshire. Fall of stone from face of quarry, about 80 feet above where he was working.

JAMES Malcolm (non-fatal) - 1891 - 14/01/1891 – Age 63 – Collier. Drumclair, James Nimmo and Co., Lanarkshire. Fall of coal and blaes.

JAMES Phillip - 1890 - 26/04/1890 – Age 26 – Collier. Elliot, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., New Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of roof. He was engaged securing the place with props but owing to the slips and general condition of the place he should have used double timbers, so far his judgement was in error.

JAMES Richard (non-fatal) - 1892 – 24/02/1892 – Age 16 – Miner. Blue Hills (metalliferous), Blue Hills Mining Co., St. Agnes, Cornwall. Fall of ground on returning after blasting.

Owing to the large run of ground, the stull in the back of the 412 fathom level carried away and caught these men under it as well as entombed another for 36 hours when he was released. They and others were at the time engaged strengthening it. 8 killed.

JAMES Thomas - 1895 - 01/08/1895 – Age 27 – Repairer. Nixon’s Merthyr Vale, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of rock roof 16 feet x 5 feet (widest part) x 9 inches thick from irregular slants where a hole was being made through a stopping. Four feet seam.

JAMES Thomas - 1899 - 21/12/1899 – Age 24 – Collier. Dare, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed between an empty tram, which he was endeavouring to hold back, and a loaded tram near the face. A haulier was assisting him to change the trams but owing to the cross-bar slipping out of his hands he lost his grip. Died 25th December.

JAMES Thomas Henry - 1891 - 02/07/1891 – Age 15 - Collier’s boy. South Tunnel, Dowlais Iron Co., Gelligaer, Glamorgan. Fall of coal, 7 foot in length, part of a face slip 9 foot long from which two sprags had been removed and 12 foot of it taken down. Top coal seam, 1 foot 4.5 inches thick, Long wall. Insufficient spragging.

It appears that he was about to fire eight shots and had ignited seven but the eighth being a little damp delayed him longer than he expected and one of the shots went off before he had got clear.

JAMESON James - 1893 - 19/12/1893 – Age 26 – Shifter. Heddon, Heddon Coal and Firebrick Co., Heddon, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased and another man were making a place ready for the hewers when, without any warning, a stone fell from the roof. The place was considered safe by officials who had been in shortly before the accident happened.

JANFREY David - 1899 - 26/11/1899 – Age 35 - Pit sinker. Manton, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Nottinghamshire. Deceased was taken ill in the mine and died shortly after being conveyed to the surface. The Coroners jury found that his death was due to natural causes.

JARMAN R. - 1899 - 04/12/1899 – Age 43 – Repairer. Eastern, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at on road a piece of side which he was endeavouring to get down gave way suddenly and fell on his leg. Died 30th Dec. New seam.

JARRETT Thomas - 1899 - 07/07/1899 – Age 37 – Roadsman. Griffin No. 3, J Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. The collar of a pair of timbers appears to have been twisted out, owing to a crush in the roadway along which he was travelling to meet the examiner in order to accompany him on his rounds, in a district where no men were employed. The collar struck his shoulder but no coal or stone fell away with it. He died two days afterwards.

JARVIS Absalom - 1897 - 28/06/1897 – Age 16 - Donkey driver. Bersham, Bersham Colliery Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inquiry made and inquest attended. The deceased accidentally fell in front of tub, which was being drawn by a donkey which he was driving along a level. He succumbed to the injuries received at the infirmary.

JAYNE Elijah - 1898 – 30/04/1898 – Age 31 – Collier. Groeswen, John Cory and Sons, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face of a place 5 foot 3 inches wide, being driven for an airway nearest props were 11 foot back. Bad roof. No. 2 Llantwitt seam.

JEAL George - 1891 – 27/10/1891 – Age 33 – Collier. Cwmaman, Cwmaman Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face of heading, semicircular piece of rock from a smooth slip just reached breaking off 8 inches thick at row of props 5 foot back. No prop below part which fell. 2 foot 9 inches seam, 3 foot 3 inches thick. Long wall.

JEFFERSON John - 1896 – 13/04/1896 – Age 58 – Pumper. Brancepeth, Strakers and Love, Co. Durham. Killed in the 1896 explosion.

JEFFERSON T. - 1891 – 03/04/1891 – Age 18 – Byeworker. Park Hill, Victoria Coal Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of stone and coal.

JEFFERSON T. - 1892 – 04/04/1892 – Age 55 – Byeworker. St. John’s Locke and Co., Normanton, Yorkshire. Injured by loco.

JEFFERSON William - 1891 – 25/12/1891 – Age 52 – Rapperman. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott Trimdon Grange Co., Co. Durham. Descending from one seam to another he seems to have got into the wrong deck of the cage and was either drowned in such or crushed between the flat sheets and a bunton. 11.30 pm.

JEFFERY James - 1899 – 05/10/1899 – Age 14 – Miner’s boy. Dalquhandy, Waddell and Son, Lanarkshire. Deceased was in front of a loaded tub, in coming down a dipping road, he attempted to stop it by stiffening his body so that it acted as a stay and the pressure of the tub caused a compound fracture of the left leg from which he died a few hours later. Going in front of a loaded tub on an inclined road is prohibited by Additional Special Rule 5.

JEFFREY Christopher - 1892 - 09/06/1892 – Age 23 – Sinker. Greenside (metalliferous), Greenside Mining Co., Patterdale, Westmoreland. While engaged with others, in sinking a shaft, the bucket became detached from the rope and fell down the shaft, a distance of 12 fathoms.

JEFFREY Thomas - 1890 - 03/10/1890 – Age 40 – Hewer. Shildon Lodge, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Auckland, Co. Durham. While sitting, kirving, some coal fell breaking his collar bone and crushing him severely. He neglected to use sprags. Died on 5th.

JEFFREYS John - 1890 - 14/10/1890 – Age 12 - Door boy. Foxhole, Foxhole Collieries Co., Swansea, Glamorgan. Fall of stone from side (17 feet x 3 feet x 2.5 feet thick at back) where a stall was being started off, side of old heading. The boy was 50 yards away from his post. 6 foot seam 2.5 foot thick. Pillar and stall. 2 killed.

JEFFREYS John - 1895 - 11/12/1895 – Age 63 - Collier. Tydraw, Beddoe and Co., Glamorgan. Fall of clift, 2.5 feet x 10 inches x 2.5 feet thick from rise side of heading, at edge of a top hole 10 yds back from face. Two feet seam, pillar and stall.

JEFFREYS Thomas - 1892 - 05/11/1892 – Age 18 – Collier. Ynyscedwyn, Ynyscedwyn Colliery Co., Swansea, Valley Brecon. Fall of roof.

JEFFREYS Thomas - 1892 - 24/08/1892 – Age 18 – Collier. Ynyscedwyn, Ynyscedwyn Colliery Co. Swansea, Valley Brecon. While descending main slant the carriages ran wild. 6 killed.

JEFFRY William (non-fatal) - 1892 - 24/10/1892 – Age 19 – Miner. South Phoenix United (metalliferous), Phoenix & West Phoenix United Mining Co., Liskeard, Cornwall. He fell from a stage upon which he was working in an overhand stope.

JEHU Samuel - 1892 - 07/07/1892 – Age 21 – Collier. Penrikyber, Penrikyber Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. A piece of rock 9 sq. feet from 2 in to 18 in thick burst out of the roof, from a slant, and knocked the deceased against the tram he was filling. Roof not double timbered over roadway.

JELLY Thomas - 1893 - 14/11/1893 – Age 68 – Bottomer, Rigg Ferrier and Strain, Lanarkshire. Wandered into old road.

JELLY William - 1897 - 17/02/1897 – Age 22 – Collier. Braysdown, Daubeny and Scobel, Somerset. In consequence of an error of judgement, in removing a sprag, he was overpowered knocked down and run over by a full tram which he and another were taking down a steep road. He should not, in any case, have been in front of it.

JELLYMAN F. - 1892 - 18/10/1892 – Age 19 – Cogger. Great Wyrley, Great Wyrley Colliery Co., Cannock, Staffordshire. Fell under moving tubs.

JEMSON William - 1890 - 16/01/1890 – Age 48 – Undermanager. Cragshall (ironstone), Peace and Partners Ltd., Loftus, Yorkshire. He was standing near to the miner, who was baring some side stone, when a heavy fall of roof took place.

JENKIN Thomas - 1891 - 10/06/1891 – Age 19 – Collier. Pentre, Vivian and Sons, Llangyfelach, Glamorgan. Fall of roof clift 12 feet x 4 feet x 1 foot thick inside of slip 4.5 feet to 5 feet back from face the place being insufficiently propped. The fireman noticing the slip and the roof and had marked the place for four props and told the colliers (father and son) to prop the roof before starting on the coal. On his second round he saw that only one prop had been stood and he assisted the son (deceased) to fix another, leaving them with the understanding that the other two props were to be stood at once. This was not done, and about an hour afterwards the roof fell. "Two-foot" seam. Stall 18 yards wide.

JENKIN Thomas D. (non-fatal) - 1892 - 10/08/1892 – Age 46 – Labourer. Wheal Grenville (metalliferous), Wheal Grenville Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. In assisting to load a casting the pinch which he was using slipped and caused him slight injuries.

JENKINS Alfred - 1892 - 06/09/1892 – Age 26 – Miner. Stravenhouse, Trustees of John Thornton, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal.

JENKINS Christmas - 1892 - 01/11/1892 – Age 54 – Ashman. Ynyshir, Ynyshir Steam Coal Co., Ynyshir, Glamorgan. Fatally injured by explosion of steam boiler. 3 killed.

JENKINS D.J. - 1899 - 27/03/1899 – Age 27 – Haulier. Dowlais Cardiff, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Fall of roof, of road rock 2.5 feet x 2.5 feet x 18 inches thick, while riding in an empty tram laden with rubbish. The heading was not timbered. No. 2 seam.

JENKINS David - 1890 - 10/09/1890 – Age 25 – Trammer. Great Mountain, John Waddell and Sons, Llanon Llanelly, Carmarthen. Struck by journey of trams on parting of main engine plane, the first tram having left the rails. The men at the parting said a signal had been made to stop the journey there but the engineman denied that he received a signal.

JENKINS David - 1893 - 05/04/1893 – Age 20 – Collier. Glyn, Glyn Colliery Co. Ltd., Llantrissant, Glamorgan. While riding between trams, up an incline gradient 18 inches to 34 inches per yard, the hitching plate of the first tram broke.

JENKINS David - 1893 - 11/04/1893 – Age 31 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an underground fire. 63 killed.

JENKINS David John - 1892 - 25/07/1892 – Age 17 – Collier. Tylors, A Tylor and Co. Ltd., Tylorstown, Glamorgan. Killed by a large fall of roof in heading where it was partly double timbered with a space between 9 foot long and 9 foot wide without timbers. They were tumbling a tram at the spot. 3 killed.
