JONES Rees - 1890 - 05/03/1890 – Age 35 – Labourer. Votty & Bowydd (slate). Struck by an empty truck on a pass-by at the foot of an incline. The truck was hooked on to the rope at the top of the incline when the pin of the link of the coupling chain came out and the truck ran away down the incline. The pin came out owing to the absence of or imperfection in the cotterel which had not been noticed. 3 killed.

JONES Rees - 1891 - 18/11/1891 – Age 34 – Repairer. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Rhondda Vach, Glamorgan. Struck on the head by a stone (about 1 lb. weight) while clearing a fall. He worked to end of shift and walked home. Died 23rd November; Four-feet seam. Long wall.

JONES Rees - 1894 - 20/09/1894 – Age 49 – Collier. Pentre, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Ystrad, Glamorgan. Fall of side (face slip of coal 7.5 foot long, 18  inches  wide, and 3.5 foot thick). He had holed the bottom coal, the whole length and width of the slip that fell had no sprags fixed. Six feet seam. Clear contravention of 22nd General Rule.

JONES Rees - 1897 - 03/08/1897 – Age 12 - Collier boy. Ynyshir Steam, Ynyshir Steam Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on Barry road, fireclay 8 feet x 3 feet x 1 foot over road, timbered. Nine feet seam which was not double. 2 killed.

JONES Richard (injured) - 1890 - 04/08/1890 – Age 33 – Miner. Aberllefenny (slate). He had inserted a cartridge of gelatine dynamite into a hole and was pushing down a second with a wooden stick when it jammed a little and exploded. Five and a half weeks off.

JONES Richard (injured) - 1890 - 28/01/1890 – Age 15 – Labourer. Wrysgan (slate). He was carrying a block of slate, which slipped through his hands and cut one of his hands severely. 1 month off.

JONES Richard (injured) - 1894 - 19/10/1894 – Age 21 – Labourer. British Gold (metalliferous). They had fired two holes with blasting gelatine. One did not work properly and they proposed to recharge it, after they proposed to recharge it, after clearing out what appeared to be a little dirt. The drill they put in to the hole became jammed. Jones struck it with a hammer and so caused the explosion of the remnants of the charge. Williams had his arms bruised and cut, Jones had his forearm and face cut. 3 weeks off.

JONES Richard (injured) - 1894 - 28/09/1894 – Age 37 – Labourer. New Welsh Slate. He was loading blocks on to a trolley when one of them shifted and cut the forefinger of his right hand badly. Joint of finger amputated. 6 weeks off.

JONES Richard - 1890 - 02/05/1890 – Age 25 – Shaftsman. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft, Carn Brea, Cornwall. Jones was engaged, with others, in sinking, and after firing a hole rode away behind the kibble, intending to take hold of the ladder but missed it and fell about 5 fathoms, receiving rather severe injuries to his knees, arms, and other parts of his body.

JONES Richard - 1890 - 28/06/1890 – Age 27 – Shunter. Black Park, Black Park Colliery Co. Ltd., Chirk, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was lowering a waggon down an incline and he was getting off the buffer on to the brake when his foot slipped and he fell under the wheels. Deceased had no business on the buffer.

JONES Richard - 1891 - 26/02/1891 – Age 22 - Horse driver. Monxton Bridge, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Donnington, Shropshire. Found dead under a tub to which his horse was attached, supposed to have been riding over tub chain.

JONES Richard - 1891 - 28/01/1891 – Ripper. Nixon’s Navigation, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fell upon a sheave on side of road while coming out from his work.

JONES Richard - 1892 - 08/07/1892 – Age 35 – Labourer. New Tredegar, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., New Tredegar, Monmouth. He apparently became entangled with the drum of the winding engine as he was found under it. He had been stationed to watch some temporary repair, which had been effected in connection with the indicator crank, he should have been outside the crank fencing. For what purpose he went inside the fence is not known.

Jones John - 1892 - 17/05/1892 – Age 39 – Miner. West Wheal Francis, West Wheal Francis Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Fall of ground on returning after blasting.

JONES Richard - 1893 - 02/05/1893 – Age 60 – Labourer. Bwllfa, Bwllfa and Merthyr Dare Steam Collieries Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fell down the upcast shaft from the Gorllwyn seam. He had no business there.

JONES Richard - 1894 - 14/02/1894 – Age 41 – Collier. Penygraig No. 2, Penygraig Coal Co., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Fatally injured by a piece of clod, 11 inches thick, which he was in the act of pulling down. Died 24th Feb. No. 2 Rhondda Seam.

JONES Richard - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 60 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JONES Richard - 1895 - 10/05/1895 – Age 22 – Rider. Maritime, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by runaway trams on engine plane. He was behind the journey for the purpose of attaching the tail rope, at the top of a rise, when the hitching plate of the third tram (in the journey of it) broke and before he could reach a manhole he was overtaken just as the bar-hook threw the teams off the rails.

JONES Richard - 1895 - 27/08/1895 – Age 43 - Slate getter. Penrhyn (quarry), Lord Penrhyn, Penrhyn, Carnarvon. Fell 38 foot from a ledge, while getting down loose rock with a crowbar. Died same day.

JONES Richard - 1896 - 29/06/1896 – Age 28 – Collier. Naval, Naval Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face, from between props 3 feet apart, roof "slanty," seam 8 feet thick.

JONES Richard - 1899 - 19/07/1899 – Age 70 – Flueman. Tynewydd, Norths Navigation Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road rock, 3 feet x 2 feet x 6 inches fell. He had cleared through the gob to a pillar of coal from which to work coal for the flue. No. 3 Rhondda seam.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1890 - 09/05/1890 – Age 40 – Miner. Halkyn (metalliferous). A charge of gelatine dynamite had missed fire and they attempted to bore out the tamping with a hammer and drill. The charge exploded and they were lucky to escape being killed. 21 weeks off. 2 injured.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1890 - 15/05/1890 – Age 30 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). He was in the act of detaching a block of slate, with a crowbar, when it fell over on to him and cut his toes badly. Five and a quarter months off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1890 - 26/03/1890 – Age 53 – Engineman. Glyndwr (metalliferous). Hand scalded by escape of steam while packing a steam tap. 1 day off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1891 - 23/04/1891 – Age 50 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). A stone, slung from a crane, slipped through its chain and cut his hand severely. One finger amputated. 16 weeks off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1894 - 15/05/1894 – Age 58 – Miner. Minera (metalliferous). Unexpected fall of the side of a stope. Back right hip and scalp lacerated. 7 weeks off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1894 - 16/03/1894 – Age 32 - Slate getter. Oakeley (slate). His supporting chain broke and he fell down the working face of his chamber. Severe shaking and shock to the system. Four and a half weeks off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1894 - 16/08/1894 – Age 25 - Slate getter. Oakeley (slate). Two holes about 21 inches apart were bored and charged with the idea of not firing No 2 until. No. 1 had gone off. No. 1 was duly fired and Jones returned in about three of four minutes to light No. 2, which exploded when he was 3 yards from it. The end on No. 2 fuse had not been clayed and was no doubt ignited by the fire of No. 1. One eye badly injured and blinded. Still disabled. March 1895.

JONES Robert - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 60 – Collier. Plas Power, Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made. Deceased failed to get all his coal down and recommenced holing without setting a sprag when the coal fell upon him.

JONES Robert - 1891 - 27/11/1891 – Age 45 – Banksman. Talwru, Vron Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was sending timber down the pit and after signalling to the engineman to "lower down," he attempted to push the timber farther into the cage, his foot slipped and as be fell the top of the cage caught him and crushed him against the edge of the banking platform. 8.30 am.

JONES Robert - 1893 - 04/04/1893 – Age 54 – Repairer. Wynnstay, Wynnstay Collieries Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased, and three other men, were travelling up a brow behind a journey of four full tubs when a new gang rider carelessly unhitched the haulage rope before the journey properly landed, the tubs ran back and caught the deceased before he reached the manhole. He succumbed to the injuries the following day.

JONES Robert - 1895 - 02/11/1895 – Age 45 - Slate getter. Penrhyn (quarry), Lord Penrhyn, Penrhyn, Carnarvon. While he was removing some slabs, produced at the edge of a tramway along one of the galleries, the pole supporting the slab slipped away unexpectedly and he overbalanced himself. He fell to the next gallery, a distance of 54 feet and was killed on the spot.

JONES Robert - 1895 - 10/01/1895 – Age 55 – Miner. South Llynypandy (metalliferous). Thomas Smith and James Dickson Flint. Fall of part of the roof of the level which he was driving. He and his partner fired two shots in the end and just as they returned a large stone fell from the roof, owing to the cap piece which supported it, having been dislocated by the blast. Killed instantaneously.

JONES Robert - 1896 - 03/06/1896 – Age 26 – Ripper. Lewis Merthyr, Trevor Lewis Merthyr Navigation Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall on road while cutting out a prop to draw down the roof. Five feet seam.

JONES Robert - 1896 - 11/07/1896 – Age 39 – Collier. National, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall on road while waiting at the parting of stall for trams. Roof not double timbered at spot. Four feet seam.

JONES Robert - 1896 - 21/01/1896 – Age 26 – Ripper. Naval, Nantygwyn Naval Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall on main road, in hard ground, while preparing it for arching.

JONES Robert - 1896 - 30/05/1896 – Age 24 – Sinker. Lumphinans, Cowdenbeath Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. A steam crane was in use for raising stuff from a sinking pit 11 fathoms down. At end of the wire rope was an iron cylinder acting as a hose and balance weight and the rope broke next this cylinder (probably weakened by fractures or cutting of wires causing the balance weight coming in contact with the pulley of the crane), allowing a kettle full of stones to fall down the shaft.

JONES Robert - 1896 - 30/12/1896 – Age 41 - Clay getter. Llay Hall, ES Clark, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased, it appears, attempted to cut out a missed shot of ammonia contrary to rules. The fireman stated that he had ordered him to leave the working place and go to the surface, and went part of the way up the drift with him, but some time later heard the shot exploded and on examining the place he found deceased had been killed by the shot with his pick lying by his side. The jury found the fireman guilty of negligence in not properly fencing off the area after the missed shot.

JONES Robert - 1897 - 08/10/1897 – Age 31 – Byeman. Plaspower, Broughton and Plaspower Coal Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was engaged at the bottom of the jig and got crushed by a runaway journey of four full tubs caused by the jig rope breaking. A hole 1.5 inches had been bored through the prop, which was eight inches thick, through which the bolt was passed to secure the pulley to the prop, at which place the prop broke. Cause, want of efficient machinery.

JONES Robert - 1898 - 23/12/1898 – Age 34 – Quarryman. Darbishires’ Granite Quarry, Darbishires Ltd., Carnarvon. The two men were engaged on a ledge in the Quarry, charging a vertical hole 15 feet deep with 20 lbs. of Rhenish gelignite. When they were pushing down some of the last cartridge, with a wooden rod, and probably before they had inserted the fuse and detonator the charge exploded. Both men were killed on the spot and a third was injured. 2 killed.

JONES Robert Ellis - 1895 - 05/03/1895 – Age 40 – Quarryman. Llwyngwern (Quarry), Llwyngwern Slate Quarry Co., Montgomery. Unexpected fall of rock from the working face. His partner had examined the rock a few days before, sounded it and considered it safe. Killed on the spot.

JONES Robert Isaac (injured) - 1892 - 09/09/1892 – Age 53 - Engine driver. Oakeley (Slate). The water gauge of a steam boiler broke and some pieces of glass flew into his eye. It was a new glass tube which had just been put in ten and a half weeks off.

JONES Robert Issac (non-fatal) - 1893 - 21/07/1893 – Age 19 - Hooker on. Oakeley (slate). Two waggons were being drawn up an incline and when about 20 yards from the top a link in the chain, at the end of the wire rope broke, the waggons ran down and collided with two empty waggons at the bottom. The slate in the runaways was thrown out and a large piece struck Jones. Six and a half weeks off.

JONES Robert R. - 1895 - 09/02/1895 – Age 22 – Rider. Penrikyber, Penrikyber Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by runaway tram of rubbish on engine plane, the rope having broken at the capping.

JONES Robert W - 1899 - 22/07/1899 – Age 42 – Quarryman. Dinorwic Slate Quarry, GW Duff, Assheton Smith, Carnarvon. While he was at work, loading from a heap of loose stones, a slate block weighing about 3 tons turned over on to him and crushed him to death.

JONES Robert W. - 1899 - 24/01/1899 – Age 42 – Quarryman. Penrhyn Slate Quarry, Lord Penrhyn, Carnarvon. A loaded waggon pushed between the legs of a so-called crane and struck a block of slate, which was suspended in it. The crane, which had been badly erected, together with the stone fell on to Roberts, he died from injuries 3 days after.

JONES Roger - 1892 - 26/07/1892 – Age 23 – Collier. Nixon’s Merthyr Vale, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Merthyr Vale, Glamorgan. Fall of roof rock, 11 feet x 5 feet x 2 inches, at face road end, inside of timbers.

JONES Rowland - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 39 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JONES Rowland - 1898 - 17/05/1898 – Age 15 - Appt. slate maker. Dinorwoc Slate Quarry, GW Duff, Assheton Smith, Carnarvon. He was temporarily assisting a brakesman at the top of a self acting plane and during the mans absence, for a few minutes, the lad pushed a waggon along the wrong line of rails and over the brow of the incline, instead of pushing it on to the travelling platform. He was carried over with the waggon and killed instantly.

JONES Samuel (injured) - 1894 - 19/02/1894 – Age 33 - Slate getter. Oakeley (slate). He fired a hole, which did not do full execution, and simply blew off about 1 foot of the top. After claying it out he charged it with gunpowder which he poured in from a tin canister. While he was about to ram in a wad of hay the gunpowder went off in his face, it was probably ignited by a spark from his candle. Totally blinded and permanently disabled.

JONES Samuel - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 19 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

JONES Samuel - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 43 – Haulier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

JONES Samuel - 1894 - 21/05/1894 – Age 30 – Collier. Dowlais No. 2, Dowlais Iron Co., Bedlinog, Glamorgan. Fatally injured by fall of roof (clod 9 inches thick) at face while working out a slip of coal. Props 4 feet back from face. Upper four feet seam. Died 11th July.

JONES Samuel - 1896 - 19/09/1896 – Age 56 – Labourer. Mount Pleasant Clay (Quarry), W Hancock and Co., Flint. While he was standing on a ledge, sorting out one kind of clay from another, a portion of the almost vertical working face fell from a height of 25 feet and killed him on the spot.

JONES Samuel - 1898 - 02/11/1898 – Age 48 – Collier. Bold, Collins Green Colliery Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A heavy fall of rock roof fell upon the deceased, over the drawing road, apparently from unseen slips although the rock was broken previously in the vicinity of the fall.

JONES Samuel Hughes - 1895 - 03/04/1895 – Age 19 – Labourer. Powell Lower Duffryn, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. In coming out, towards the shaft, the deceased, in some unaccountable manner, got astride the haulage rope and was carried up to the overhead drum and crushed to death.

JONES Simeon (non-fatal) - 1893 - 23/02/1893 – Age 19 - Slate maker. New Welsh Slate. He was sitting inside a sawing table and was filing a saw. He foolishly had not stopped the table and his leg was caught by a projecting set screw and squeezed. 6 weeks off.

JONES T. Morris - 1890 - 31/01/1890 – Age 26 – Sinker. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Drowned in a shaft by a sudden inrush of water and debris.

JONES Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 03/10/1890 – Age 45 – Miner, Minera (metalliferous). He was working out some loose ground which fell sooner than expected struck his shoulder and broke his collar bone. 32 weeks off.

JONES Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 08/09/1890 – Age 52 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Jones was working on a stage and a stone came down from the back, knocking out the plank on which he was standing. He fell about two or three fathoms down the stope injuring his nose and lips severely.

JONES Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 30/12/1890 – Age 52 – Miner. Peacock, Limehurst Coal Co., Limehurst, Lancashire. Thigh broken by coal forcing out his sprags.

JONES Thomas (injured) - 1891 - 10/04/1891 – Age 35 – Labourer. East Darren (metalliferous). Thumb crushed by a tram waggon while tipping it. 37 weeks off.

JONES Thomas (injured) - 1891 - 23/10/1891 – Age 40 – Miner. Stopes No. 2, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Radcliffe, Lancashire. Injured by roof falling in their working place. Inspection and inquiry. 2 injured.

JONES Thomas (injured) - 1894 - 14/12/1894 – Age 15 – Driver. Fair View, Coalbrookdale Co. Ltd., Dawley, Shropshire. Crushed by tub drawn by horse while going in front of tub to hold it back.

JONES Thomas (non-fatal) - 1893 - 12/06/1893 – Age 45 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). He was preparing to refire a hole, which had been blasted once and had produced a crack, accidentally he let the lighted candle end (snuff) fall into the charge of gunpowder which exploded. By good fortune he was only slightly injured. One and a quarter weeks off.

JONES Thomas - 1890 - 07/03/1890 – Age 47 – Sinker. Norths’ Navigation Caerau Sinking, Norths’ Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Maesteg, Glamorgan. Killed by a banking trolley falling down shaft.

JONES Thomas - 1890 - 18/09/1890 – Age 20 – Waggoner. Buckley, G Watkinson and Sons Ltd., Buckley, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The chain of a self acting incline broke and the full tub ran down and caught the deceased, who was standing on the landing plate, instead of at the side, as he should have been.

JONES Thomas - 1890 - 30/12/1890 – Age 34 – Collier. Cwmbargoed, Dowlais Iron Co., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Fall of roof while holing on top of seam. The stone discharged a prop, which was set to support it. Lower 4-foot, 3.5 foot thick. Long wall. Died 2Oth. Mar.

JONES Thomas - 1891 - 10/07/1891 – Age 62 - Day shifter. Nixons Navigation, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Merthyr Vale, Glamorgan. Fall of piece of clift about 36 inches x 15 inches X 33 inches thick from edge of ripping while stowing rubbish in stall.

JONES Thomas - 1891 - 11/05/1891 – Age 30 – Miner. Wharton Hall No. 1, Bridgewater Trustees, Tyldesley, Lancashire. Died on his way home, from injury by a block of one ton of coal falling suddenly from the face as he drew a sprag to let it fall. Inspection and inquest attended.

JONES Thomas - 1892 - 10/10/1892 – Age 51 – Banksman. Tylors, A Tylor and Co. Ltd., Tylorstown, Glamorgan. Fell down shaft from surface, in stepping off a box, having forgotten that he had just drawn back the trolly for the box to descend.

JONES Thomas - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 25 – Collier. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

JONES Thomas - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 31 – Jigger. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

JONES Thomas - 1893 - 02/04/1893 – Age 59 – Labourer. Cyfartha Castle, Crawshay Bros. Ltd., Merthyr, Glamorgan. Died from injuries received while moving wagons.

JONES Thomas - 1893 - 05/08/1893 – Age 26 – Hewer. Wingate Grange, Owners of Wingate Grange Colliery, Wingate, Co. Durham. Died today from injuries received to back and legs by a fall of stone on the 28th May 1888. He was working nearer the goaf than ordered by overman.

JONES Thomas - 1893 - 25/07/1893 – Age 64 – Engineman. Deep Navigation, Ocean Coal Co., Treharris, Glamorgan. Found dead under crank of air compressing engine.

JONES Thomas - 1894 - 21/11/1894 – Age 45 – Repairer. Wynnstay, Wynnstay Collieries Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was crushed through a runaway tub bumping against a tub he was pushing up a brow. The runaway tub was said to have got unshackled accidentally from another full tub which two other repairers were bringing out.

JONES Thomas - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 28 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JONES Thomas - 1894 - 25/05/1894 – Age 45 - Coal loader. Ebbw Vale No. 15, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. While engaged on a truck, at the screens, another truck bumped into it and caused him to fall down to the ground, in front of the wheels which passed over him. The truck, a foreign one, which caused the accident had a break on one wheel only which was not enough in the gradient of 1 in 80 at this point. He had been engaged about the Ebbw Vale Works for upwards of 30 years.

JONES Thomas - 1895 - 06/11/1895 – Age 32 – Haulier. Ammanford, Ammanford Colliery Co. Ltd., Carmarthen. Kicked by a horse in the surface stables.

JONES Thomas - 1895 - 13/02/1895 – Age 42 – Foreman labourer, Brook Hill (Quarry), Buckley Brick and Tile Co. Ltd., Flint. Unexpected fall of clay from the face of his working place. Died the same day.

JONES Thomas - 1896 - 09/12/1896 – Age 29 – Collier. River Level, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Glamorgan. Drowned by an influx of water from the adjoining abandoned Colliery. 6 killed.

JONES Thomas - 1896 - 17/06/1896 – Age 15 - Slag picker. Cefn, Bryndu Coal and Coke Co., Glamorgan. Crushed to death in a worn small coal conveyor, attached to a coal washer. It is not known how he got into it. The whole of it was fenced.

JONES Thomas - 1896 - 19/03/1896 – Age 22 – Rider. Forest, Elizabeth Thomas, Carmarthen. Crushed between roof and top of water tank, on which he was riding up slant.

JONES Thomas - 1897 - 04/05/1897 – Age 25 - Asst. timberman. Mardy No. 2, Lockets Merthyr Collieries (1894) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on main road, a small stone fell from a height of thirteen feet while retimbering the spot. Died from injury to the head May 25th.

JONES Thomas - 1897 - 08/03/1897 – Age 37 – Collier. Rose Heyworth, Lancasters Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouthshire. Fall of roof while he was engaged baring down part of it in his working place.

JONES Thomas - 1897 - 17/12/1897 – Age 28 – Timberman. Rose Heyworth, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof in consequence of a steel girder giving way in the main road where he was engaged repairing. The girder was not crushed down by the fall of roof (a very small one comparatively), but was rather shoved over when loosened by the work deceased was engaged upon.

JONES Thomas - 1898 - 11/02/1898 – Age 62 – Miner. New Pany-y-ne Lead, WH Arnott, Flint. Unexpected fall of a stone weighing 3 or 4 cwt. from the roof of a level where the deceased was commencing an overhand stope. He died in a few hours.

JONES Thomas - 1899 - 02/05/1899 – Age 21 – Collier. Cilely, Blindell Bros., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, fireclay 6 feet x 4 feet x 18 inches thick, from a slip between two props 6 foot 4 inches apart. Two feet nine seam.

JONES Thomas - 1899 - 04/05/1899 – Age 53 – Repairer. Bertie Lewis, Merthyr Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at  road cliff 6 feet x 5 feet x 28 inches thick, while reopening an airway. Deceased and his partner had failed to bar it down and at the time they were cutting under it. Nine feet seam.

JONES Thomas - 1899 - 14/09/1899 – Age 36 – Dataller. Aldridge, Aldridge Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof while repairing. Died 21st Sept.

JONES Thomas - 1899 - 14/12/1899 – Age 60 – Labourer. Hills Stone, Bath & Corsham Freestone Quarries Ltd., Wiltshire. Fall of earth from the breast where the slope shaft (at 1 in 2) from the surface was about to be commenced under cover.

JONES Thomas - 1899 - 15/12/1899 – Age 60 – Haulier. Lewis Merthyr, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Caught between a platform wall at Coke ovens and buffers of a wagon which he was assisting to turn on a turntable.

JONES Thomas - 1899 - 19/08/1899 – Age 18 – Collier. Llest, Llest Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 19 killed.

JONES Thomas - 1899 - 30/05/1899 – Age 58 - Horse keeper. Elm, G Watkinson and Sons Ltd., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was descending the No. 1 pit, to commence duty, and when the cage stopped part of the way down the shaft at the Hollin mouthing, to take the pumpman from that point main coal pit bottom, the deceased walked out of cage and fell to the bottom of the shaft. The pumpman is said to have spoken with deceased informing him he was going down with him but deceased must have forgotten himself.

JONES Thomas J - 1898 - 19/03/1898 – Age 39 – Collier. Glyncorrwg, Glyncorrwg Colliery Co. Glamorgan. Fall of side, top coal 10 inches x 30 inches x 18 inches thick. He fell while holing under it without sprags. Spine fractured and died 23rd Nov. No. 2 Rhondda seam.

JONES Thomas John - 1896 - 06/11/1896 – Age 19 – Collier. Ebbw Vale Marine, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. While filling a tram at the working face, a large stone fell from the roof killing him instantly and injuring another Collier named Bull. The place was well timbered.

JONES Thomas R. - 1896 - 07/08/1896 – Age 24 – Quarryman. Penyrorsedd slate (Quarry), Penyrorsedd Slate Quarry Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. He was struck by a large stone which he had loosened by his partners, and fell prematurely. Died the same day.

JONES Thomas Ruck - 1899 - 12/07/1899 – Age 28 – Hodder. New Fancy, Parkend and Deep Navigation Collieries Gloucester Ltd. In consequence of the winding rope climbing the trough of the pulley the cage in which he and three
others were ascending dropped back about six feet, jerking him out and causing him to fall about 280 feet to the bottom of the shaft.

JONES Thomas William - 1891 - 28/07/1891 – Age 26 - Drawer. Snydale Hall, Col. Le Gendre N Starkie, Westhoughton, Lancashire. Fatally injured by a prop, that was forced out, as he was wedging coal down. Inspection and inquiry. Died Sept. 30th. Inquest attended.

JONES Urias - 1897 - 01/10/1897 – Age 14 - Collier’s boy. Ebbw Vale No. 15, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof from between two pairs of timber, 2 feet 10 inches apart and about five yards back from the face, where he was filling a tram. He died on the 16th. February 1898.

JONES W. - 1893 - 28/07/1893 – Age 32 – Deputy. Saltwell, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcestershire. Explosion of powder. Died 13th Aug.

JONES W. - 1894 - 30/04/1894 – Age 30 – Sinker. Glass Houghton, TH Thorpe, Castleford, Yorkshire. Collapse of sinking shaft. 2 killed.

JONES W. - 1899 - 06/10/1899 – Age 54 – Brakesman. Maesteg, Norths Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Glamorgan. While riding on a locomotive a truck left the rails slewed round and came in contact with him causing injuries from which he died on 20th December.

JONES W. Matthew - 1897 – 15/01/1897 – Age 32 – Quarryman. Pantdreiniog Slate Quarry, Bangor Slate and Slab Quarry Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. While working with a crowbar, in loose rock, a piece fell upon him and inflicted injuries from which he died in six days.

JONES W.E. (injured) - 1894 - 01/03/1894 – Age 36 - Slate getter. New Welsh Slate. While standing on a small stage on the working face he was endeavouring to remove loose rock with a crowbar. He slipped and fell down the working face. Skull fractured. 8 weeks off.

JONES W.H. - 1894 - 08/08/1894 – Age 14 – Driver. Brownhills, W Harrison Ltd., Walsall, Staffordshire. Upon a surface tramway. The horse upon which he was riding stumbled, fell and rolled over him. He lived only an hour.

JONES W.T. - 1893 - 01/03/1893 – Age 14 - Collier’s boy. Abergorky, Byrnyeat Brown and Co., Treorky, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face (7.5 feet x 4.5 feet x 26 inches thick) from between two slips, while carrying coal near waste. Three props were said to have been discharged. Roof very slanty. Six feet seam.

JONES Walter - 1895 - 21/12/1895 – Age 58 – Collier. Ocean Lady, Windsor Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Died 27th April, from injuries received by fall of roof following a fall of coal which knocked out a prop. No 2 seam.

JONES William (injured) - 1890 - 02/09/1890 – Age 17 – Quarryman. Maen Offeren (slate). A piece of slate slipped from a load of blocks, on a trolley, and cut his toes. 9 weeks.

JONES William (injured) - 1890 - 25/10/1890 – Age 35 – Rockman. New Welsh Slate. He was splitting a block of slate, lying upon the floor of an underground chamber, when part slipped off and squeezed his foot. 8 days off.

JONES William (injured) - 1891 - 08/05/1891 – Age 35 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). Accidentally ignited a charge of gun powder, placed in a crack, by a spark from his candle. Five and half weeks off.

JONES William (injured) - 1891 - 16/04/1891 – Age 60 – Fitter. Bryn-yr-afr (metalliferous). While he was standing on a jigger, in motion, taking measurements, his clothes were caught by some revolving shafting. He should have stopped the machinery before doing his work. Ankle twisted. One and a half weeks off.

JONES William (injured) - 1891 - 28/11/1891 – Age 47 – Miner. Frongoch (metalliferous). He happened to see a detonator on the ground and examined it with his candle. It exploded and blew off the tips of the thumb and the first fingers of his right hand. Still disabled March 1892.

JONES William (injured) - 1892 - 01/04/1892 – Age 55 – Labourer. Oakeley (Slate). Two men were dragging a big stone, by means of a winch, the stone gave a lurch and jerked the chain; Jones let go his handle and it flew and broke his arm. Fifteen and a half weeks off.

JONES William (injured) - 1892 - 05/01/1892 – Age 37 – Rockman. Oakeley (Slate). Unexpected fall of several tons of rock from the working face where he was engaged in jumping a hole.

JONES William (injured) - 1892 - 12/02/1892 – Age 48 – Oiler. Frongoch (metalliferous). He was greasing the bearings of a pulley at the surface and put his arm in between the spokes. It was caught and broken. 5 weeks off.

JONES William (injured) - 1894 - 09/05/1894 – Age 50 - Slate getter. Votty & Boydd (slate). He was prizing off a block of slate with a crow bar when a small sharp piece came off, slid down the crow bar and cut off the forefinger of the right hand. Four and half months off.

He was leaving the Quarry before the proper time and was walking along a self acting incline down which slate was being lowered, through want of care on his part he was struck by the wire rope. Right leg broken. Still disabled March 1895.

JONES William (non-fatal) - 1893 - 07/12/1893 – Age 38 – Rockman. Llechwedd (slate). He turned the spur wheel of the crane winch, with his hand, and had his little finger caught between the Cog and severely fractured. 3 weeks off.

JONES William (non-fatal) - 1893 - 30/11/1893 – Age 57 – Rockman. Llechwedd (slate). While standing on the working face he slipped from his chain and fell 9 feet on to some stones, lying on the floor of the chamber. Some of his ribs broken. Four and a half weeks off.

JONES William (non-fatal) - 1894 - 26/07/1894 – Age 18 – Miner. Killefreth (metalliferous), Killefreth Mine Adventurers, Scorrier, Cornwall. Fall of ground from side level.

JONES William - 1890 - 05/03/1890 – Age 44 – Labourer. Votty & Bowydd (slate). Struck by an empty truck on a pass-by at the foot of an incline. The truck was hooked on to the rope, at the top of the incline, when the pin of the link of the coupling chain came out and the truck ran away down the incline. The pin came out owing to the absence of or imperfection in the cotterel which had not been noticed. 3 killed.

JONES William - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 17 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

JONES William - 1890 - 07/08/1890 – Age 21 – Rider. Cyfarth Castle, Crawshay Bros., Merthyr, Glamorgan. He had entered an old level for a natural purpose when a fall of roof occurred and slightly injured him. He walked home and had medical attendance on the two following days, for a wound on the leg. He took a chill after being out, and died on 27th August from "disease of the heart indirectly caused by the accident.".

JONES William - 1890 - 09/09/1890 – Age 21 – Haulier. Mountain Level, Crawshay Bros., Merthyr, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on level while passing with horse and tram. Two pairs of double timbers, 2 foot apart and some laggings were thrust out by the fall which went up 9 foot to the surface. Lower 7 foot level.

JONES William - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Age 18 – Hitcher. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

JONES William - 1890 - 13/12/1891 – Age 17 – Haulier. Deep Duffryn, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Hand slightly injured by tram on which he was riding tumbling off rails. Suffered subsequently from erysipelas and consumption and died 27th July. Inquest held; verdict "Accidental death.".

JONES William - 1892 - 18/07/1892 – Age 70 – Labourer. Cyfartha Cwm, Crawshay Bros. Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Fall of side on main road as they were passing in to work. 2 killed.

JONES William - 1892 - 19/02/1892 – Age 19 – Filler. Havod-y-bwch, Ruabon Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inquest attended. Deceased was clearing his working face, between his road and the next, when a full of coal came against him, owing to the Collier of the next road having drawn his sprags overnight, leaving the coal face unsupported.

JONES William - 1892 - 24/08/1892 – Age 30 – Labourer. Ynyscedwyn, Ynyscedwyn Colliery Co., Swansea Valley, Brecon. While descending main slant the carriages ran wild. 6 killed.

JONES William - 1893 - 22/12/1893 – Age 36 – Collier. Nantmelyn, Nantmelyn Colliery Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of rock roof (11 feet x 9 feet) from a clay joint in a narrow heading. No timbers had been stood. Proud died 5th Jan. 1894. Yard seam. 2 killed.

JONES William - 1893 - 23/11/1893 – Age 21 - Engine driver. Ferndale No. 3, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Ystrad, Glamorgan. Fell off front of journey and was run over. He had no authority to act as rider.

JONES William - 1893 - 28/11/1893 – Age 25 - Corporal. Hucknall No. 2, Hucknall Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. The deceased man injured himself whilst lifting a full tub on the roadway. He was using a belt and short chain and appears to have injured his spine. He died 11th Dec.

JONES William - 1894 - 03/05/1894 – Age 50 – Labourer. South Wales, Rose Heyworth Lancasters Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Abertillery, Monmouth. When unloading a railway truck, with pit wood, he appears to have received a strain which, owing to his having suffered previously, resulted in a strangulated hernia causing death. He does not appear to have complained seriously at the time nor to have received medical aid before reaching home.

JONES William - 1894 - 26/01/1894 – Age 20 – Loader. Point of Ayrshire, Point of Ayr Collieries Co. Ltd., Mostyn, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The props had been taken out, for getting the top coal down, and while they where cleaning the coal, that had fallen, some more top coal gave way to a slip, which they had failed to secure, and which came upon the deceased before they could clear themselves. 2 killed.

JONES William - 1894 - 26/01/1894 – Age 36 – Collier. Wynstay, Wynstay Collieries Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased, with 14 other men, were descending the shaft in a double decked cage, and when about 14 yards from the pit bottom the cage oscillated and touched the walling of the shaft causing the deceased to fall to the pit bottom. 2 killed.

JONES William - 1895 - 17/06/1895 – Age 12 - Collier’s boy. Bedlinog No. 1, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. While filling the coal box, at face, a piece of coal fell off and struck him and his head came in contact with the hitching plate of the train. The coal (5 foot 7 inches x 18 inches x 4 foot 4 inches thick) broke off at one sprag and discharged another. Upper Ras Las seam.

JONES William - 1895 - 22/02/1895 – Age 28 – Repairer. Lewis’ Merthyr, Bertie Lewis, Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of a stone, 5.5 feet x 3 feet x 2 foot thick, from between four slips. He was about to shift forward the road in a Nottingham face and contrary to orders knocked a prop from under this stone before fixing two flats, as instructed by the overman three hours previously.

JONES William - 1895 - 23/12/1895 – Age 50 – Contractor. Pemberton, J Blundell and Son, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was engaged roofing down, and had a shot rammed ready for firing but when knocking a prop out, and reaching it from under the roof, a stone fell upon him from between two slips killing him instantly.

JONES William - 1895 - 30/08/1895 – Age 14 – Beltboy. Pelsall, Walsall Wood Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Crushed by machinery when playing with a rope. Died 16th Sept.

JONES William - 1896 - 08/05/1896 – Age 25 – Collier. Lea Green, Sutton Heath & Lea Green Collieries Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. Inquiry made. The deceased, in the act of lifting a box on to the rails, slipped backwards his hands, coming in contact with the rail, causing such injuries that he died a week afterwards from inflammation of the ruptured muscles of the arm. The jury returned the verdict, in accordance with the medical evidence.

JONES William - 1896 - 12/06/1896 – Age 23 - Slate getter. New Welsh Slate, New Welsh Slate Co. Ltd., Merioneth. Breaking of a wooden bridge, over which they were tramming too heavy a load of slate. Jones and Thomas were killed on the spot. William Evans died in a few hours while another person Richard Evans was seriously injured. 3 killed.

JONES William - 1896 - 20/08/1896 – Age 35 - Day overman. Cambrian, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. While deceased, and the fireman, were riding in the last tram of a journey, it was thrown over by some props which had fallen off a tram in front.

JONES William - 1896 - 27/03/1896 – Age 19 - Timber drawer. Lea Green, Sutton Heath & Lea Green Collieries Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was assisting another man to draw timber and after they had drawn a number of props out, they appear to have trusted too much to the strength of the roof and when drawing a prop with a hammer the roof fell upon him.

JONES William - 1896 - 27/06/1896 – Age 17 – Shackler. Ferndale No. 7, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by trams, having fallen off while riding contrary to regulations between the first and second tram.

JONES William - 1897 - 02/04/1897 – Age 31 – Collier. Mardy, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Monmouth. When walking along a dip, heading to his work, he stumbled and fell on the point of a mandrill which he was carrying under his arm. It entered his neck and death resulted in about ten minutes from loss of blood.

JONES William - 1897 - 06/04/1897 – Age 54 – Deputy. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., North Yorkshire. He, and other deputies, were preparing to set a prop when a piece of ironstone burst off the side and caught him. Died same day.

JONES William - 1897 - 22/02/1897 – Age 35 – Collier. Nixon’s Navigation, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by a runaway tram on his stall road, a nail used as a pin to connect the horse's shaft to the gun having broken, on a gradient of 2 inches per yard.

JONES William - 1898 - 09/12/1898 – Age 52 – Collier. Ocean Eastern, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, fireclay 12 feet x 4 foot (in middle) x 22 inches thick. In taking down some clod a prop was knocked out. New seam.

JONES William - 1898 - 15/09/1898 – Age 55 – Hitcher. Ocean, Lady Windsor Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While scotching a loaded tram on the cage another one ran forward to the shaft and crushed him between the two trams.

JONES William - 1898 - 20/06/1898 – Age 44 – Haulier. Werfa, James Evens and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fell against a tram and broke a blood vessel from which he died.

JONES William - 1899 - 11/12/1899 – Age 43 – Quarryman. Dinorwic Slate Quarry, GW Duff, Assheton Smith, Carnarvon. He somehow fell from the ledge, on which he was at work, to a depth of 15 feet and fractured his skull. Died 16th December. His mate who worked with him also fell off the ledge and fractured his skull. It is not likely that the primary cause of the accident was a fall of ground, from their own working place, and that this carried them off the ledge.

JONES William - 1899 - 29/05/1899 – Age 44 – Haulier. Waun Llwyd, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. When walking in front of a full journey he stumbled and the first tram ran over him.

JONES William D. - 1896 - 04/08/1896 – Age 26 – Repairer. Main, Bryncoch Main Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 7 killed.

JONES William Edward - 1897 - 03/03/1897 – Age 42 - Asst. fitter. Tillery, Powell Tillery Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Crushed by arms of the spur wheel, of a new hauling engine, he having stretched between them quite unnecessarily when oiling. The drum was jerked at the time by full trains which were attached to the rope at the top of the incline.

JONES William F. - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 49 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JONES William G. (injured) - 1890 - 01/01/1890 – Age 23 – Miner. Oakeley (slate). He fell while he was holding a paper cartridge containing gunpowder in one hand and a raddle in the other. The powder took fire and he was slightly burnt. Three and a half weeks off.

JONES William H. - 1899 - 19/08/1899 – Age 44 – Repairer. Llest, Llest Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 19 killed.

JONES William Henry - 1892 - 25/02/1892 – Age 24 – Collier. Glyn, J and W Woods, Pontypool, Monmouth. Precipitated down the shaft from a cage in which they, and six others, were descending. The cage suddenly alighted, about 30 yards from the surface, upon a pump rod, which having broken fell across the shaft in consequence of insufficient Byatts to confine it to that part of the shaft in which the pumps are fixed. The breakage of the rod occurred between the ascent of the cage and its descent, an interval of three or four minutes only. 2 killed. Collier since transferred to Bryndu Coal and Coke Co. Ltd.

JONES William John - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 41 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

JONES William Owen (injured) - 1890 - 07/01/1890 – Age 50 – Rockman. Wrysgan (slate). He was passing a place near a place where other men were blasting, and though warned went on. He was struck on the hand by a stone from the blast. 5 weeks off.

JONES William R. (injured) - 1894 - 28/12/1894 – Age 22 – Labourer. Fron-boeth (slate). A piece of slate slipped away unexpectedly from the working face and struck Jones, who was at work on the floor of the chamber. Calf of leg cut. 7 weeks off.

JONES Willliam - 1895 - 06/12/1895 – Age 40 – Packer. Bold Collins Green Colliery Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made, and inquest attended. While the deceased was engaged making a pack wall in the face of wide work a stone fell upon him from some slips in the roof.

JORDAN Edward - 1895 - 11/01/1895 – Age 34 - Water course foreman. Coalbrook Vale, Coalbrook Vale Colliery Co., Coalbrook Vale, Monmouth. While unloading a waggon, of pit wood on the railway sidings, he either slipped off the waggon or a piece of timber caught him by the clothes and caused him to fall to the ground resulting in injuries from which he died.

JORDAN John - 1895 - 18/03/1895 – Age 32 – Hewer. Willington, Strakers and Love, Willington, Co. Durham. Died today from an injury to his back caused by fall of stone, 5th Nov. last.

JORDAN R. - 1890 - 23/12/1890 – Age 16 – Labourer. Plymouth Works, Plymouth Works Mortgagees, Merthyr, Glamorgan. Crushed by haulage engine which he had set in motion in the temporary absence of the engineman.

JORDON Fred - 1895 - 25/03/1895 – Age 30 – Stallman. Brickhouse, GH Dunn, Staffordshire. Fall of coal from roof and side of gateroad.

JOSE Thomas. H. (non-fatal) - 1892 - 09/03/1892 – Age 25 – Miner. Wheal Bassett (metalliferous), Wheal Bassett Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Fall of ground on returning after blasting.

JOSEPH Nelson (non-fatal) - 1890 - 20/10/1890 – Age 50 – Miner. Gilmerton, Gilmerton Gas Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Fall of Coal. 31 days off.

JOSEPH Opie (injured) - 1890 - 02/05/1890 – Age 45 - Asst. engineer. Wheal Basset (metalliferous), Wheal Basset Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Whilst standing across a trap hatch, in the enginehouse, one of the mans feet slipped and he fell against the opposite side fracturing one of his ribs.

JOSEPH Owen - 1891 - 07/01/1891 – Age 20 – Collier. South Tunnel, Dowlais Iron Co., Gelligaer, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp, which appeared to have accumulated at the face of his stall, owing to a sheet being down on the heading between the fireman’s examination and his going into the face within two hours. Top coal seam. Long wall. Naked lights used. Died 25th January.

JOSEPH Thomas - 1892 - 15/01/1892 – Age 29 – Collier. Cwmaman, Cwmaman Coal Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof from slips inside of posts 3 feet back from the face.

JOYCE Frank - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 24 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JOYCE J. - 1897 - 31/08/1897 – Age 60 – Loader. Fishley, Fishley Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof displacing timber.

JOYCE John (non-fatal) - 1891 - 28/09/1891 – Brusher. Hallside, James Dunlop and Co., Newton, Lanarkshire. Ignition of compressed powder while inserting it into a shot hole. 2 injured.

JOYCE Martin - 1891 - 08/08/1891 – Age 22 – Sinker. West Shield Row, Dickinson and Co., Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased, and another man, were lighting shots in a sinking shaft, and the former having some difficulty in getting one of his shots lighted persisted in waiting and trying to light it up (although called on by his mate to leave it) when three of the shots exploded, the stones striking and killing him. His mate had a miraculous escape. 12.20 am.

JOYCE Michael - 1892 - 02/02/1892 – Age 31 – Labourer. Shieldhill, Carron Co., Stirling. Suffocated in dross hopper.

JUBB J. - 1897 - 04/06/1897 – Age 65 - Clay getter. Wharncliffe Silkstone, Wharncliffe Silkstone Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of side.

JUDGE Matthew - 1893 - 13/04/1893 – Age 26 – Drawer. Pentland Clippens Oil Co. Ltd, Edinburgh. Jammed by hutches.

JUKES Benjamin - 1891 - 01/10/1891 – Age 53 - Ironstone getter. Netherton Old, M and W Grazebrook, Dudley, Worcestershire. Fall of coal at edge of Gubbin Hole.

JUKES D. (injured) - 1894 - 05/09/1894 – Age 22 – Collier. Clough Hall No. 4, Birchenwood Colliery Co., Kidsgrove, Staffordshire. Fall of coal from side at working face in 8- foot Seam. It should have been spragged. Broken leg and collar bone.

JUKES Edward - 1890 - 27/08/1890 – Age 36 – Miner. Wet Earth White Day Eye, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Clifton, Lancashire. Died September 27th from heart disease, accelerated by injuries from roof falling where he was moving dirt.

JUKES Samuel - 1890 - 12/08/1890 - Horse driver. Cannock Chase, Cannock Chase Colliery Co., Walsall, Staffordshire. Kicked by a horse on November 11th 1889, death resulting from the injury on August 12th 1890.

JUMP James - 1893 - 20/03/1893 – Age 15 – Driver. Allens Green, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Radcliffe, Lancashire. Was riding on the first tub. Owing to his driving too fast the tub left the rails and overturned on to him.
