Complaining of tenderness during the night, the place was fomented and the doctor, next day, failed to notice any bruise. The lad was up and about the next couple of days but it then proved that the bowel was injured and peritonitis making its appearance he died on the 10th. Apparently a pure accident.

JOHNS Stephen - 1891 - 23/12/1891 – Age 48 – Miner. New Great Work (metalliferous), New Great Work Tin Mining Co. Ltd., Marazion, Cornwall. Drowned by an influx of water from old workings which they communicated with in driving on the north lode at the 12-fathom level. They were alone in the mine and went down to place a charge of dynamite against the face of the level, where water had been coming through in such quantities as to lead them to expect that old workings might be close at hand. There was no bore-hole kept in advance, as, previous to the water appearing, two or three days before the accident no old workings were anticipated. The agent or managers considered the end so broken up that he prohibited any drilling in the stone for fear of disturbing it by hammering and ordered this plan of blasting as the safest, which it certainly was. They went down the shaft at 2 o'clock and were last seen at 8 o'clock, by a youth sent down by the agent to inquire how things were going on. They were then at the adit thawing dynamite, and were, when he left, about to start for the end. A comrade who went down about 6-o'clock at the agent's request, to see how they were getting on, found the mine full of water up to the edit level. Upon subsequent inspection it was found that they had drilled a hole almost 6 inches deep at the breast of the end and evidently the result was to disturb the shattered shell of rock which was what the agent feared and on account of which he prohibited their doing any work, except to blast at the breast. The bodies were recovered on the 8th of January, when the water was in fork. 2 killed.

JOHNS Thomas Henry - 1892 - 01/09/1892 – Age 29 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. It was unknown whether it was one of the shots that not having gone off now exploded on being struck with a pick or a loose cartridge of dynamite but presumably it was the former.
