TABBERER John - 1899 - 11/01/1899 – Age 16 - Blacksmiths appnt. Threlkeld Granite Quarry, Threlkeld Granite Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was assisting his father to fit a new cast iron wheel on a shaft. The former was driving in the key when the wheel split and one half fell on deceased’s toe. Tetanus supervened and he died on the 27th January.

TABERNER Peter - 1898 - 07/09/1898 – Age 58 – Dataller. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inquiry made and inquest attended. A new drawer missed to scotch his tub in a brow which then overpowered him and running down it caught and crushed the deceased who was engaged at the time repairing the brow. He succumbed to the injuries received on the 15th instant.

TAGG George Thomas - 1899 - 15/09/1899 – Age 21 - Asst. onsetter. Swadlincote, Old Halls Collieries Ltd., Derbyshire. Deceased appears to have been attempting to unload and reload a two decked cage in the absence of the onsetter. He was caught and crushed by the floor of the upper deck of the cage.

TAGUE James (non-fatal) - 1894 - 16/05/1894 – Age 23 – Miner. Bellsdyke, Bellsdyke Coal Co., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof. 42 days off.

TAIT George - 1897 - 08/05/1897 – Age 28 – Hewer. Broomhill, Broomhill Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inquiries made. He was lying on the floor kirving in an ordinary bord in the whole working when it came away at the back and fell on him. Died May 12th.

TAIT George - 1899 - 17/07/1899 – Age 18 – Putter. Wearmouth B, Monkwearmouth Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Inspection made. He was crushed by a full tub which ended up when he was riding on the limbers. He was probably going too fast.

TAIT James (non-fatal) - 1890 - 13/11/1890 – Age 28 – Driver. Newbattle, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Jammed by tubs. Not yet returned.

TAIT John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 30/06/1893 - Age 18 - Pony driver. Penicuik, Shotts Iron Co., Edinburgh. Jammed by tubs. 42 days off.

TAIT Robert (non-fatal) - 1891 - 19/12/1891 – Age 16 – Collier. Fairhill, Archibald Russell, Lanarkshire. Explosion of gunpowder. 2 injured. 26 days off.

TAKLE George - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 28 – Collier. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

TALBOT George - 1899 - 09/08/1899 – Age 24 – Collier. South Wales Cwmtillery, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Monmouth. His skull was crushed against the roof by the edge or cotter bar of a tram which he was upsetting at a turn out. He died the following day.

TALBOT Henry - 1896 - 30/04/1896 – Age 41 – Micklefield. Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.

TALBOT John - 1894 - 21/02/1894 – Age 33 – Collier. Sherdley, Whitecross Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased was widening a level and when in the act of getting a slip down, on the higher side, the coal knocked out three props and the roof fell upon him before he could clear himself.

TALBOT William - 1890 - 04/01/1890 – Age 25 - Waggon lowerer. Worsley Menses, Worsley Menses Colliery Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Whilst lowering a waggon he was crushed against a post which was too near the rails to allow him to do his work with safety.

TANNER Eli - 1890 - 27/11/1890 – Age 48 – Collier. Bryngwyn, Executors of WG Cartwright, Bedwas, Monmouth. Fall of clod at the face. He was clearing over the coal and had taken no means to secure himself against this clod which is 6 inches thick. This seems one of those cases where the strict enforcement of rules would have saved the man's life but would no doubt have been opposed by the men as unnecessary had no accident occurred.

TANNER John - 1899 - 10/02/1899 – Age 39 – Overman. Dalbeath, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was endeavouring to pick up a screw key, which had fallen underneath the framework which carried some haulage pulleys, when his head was caught by a projecting portion of a clutch revolving with the shaft and crushed against the framework.

TANNER William - 1893 - 08/09/1893 – Age 32 – Collier. Glyn, Bryndu Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Fall of coal from the face directly after he commenced work. Result of inadequate spragging.

TANSH Henry - 1890 - 19/09/1890 – Age 45 – Miner. Nether Coy No. 1, Carron Co., Kilsyth, Ayrshire. Explosion of firedamp (two other men injured).

TANSLEY John B. - 1893 - 17/02/1893 – Age 17 – Stoker. Berry Hill Railway, H Warrington and Son, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Fell down shaft from pump inset.

TARBUCK Alfred - 1899 - 24/02/1899 – Age 25 - Shaft sinker. Stanley’s Sinking, Stanley Bros. Ltd., Warwick. Deceased and four others were working at the bottom of a sinking shaft when something fell down the shaft and killed him. Nothing was found to satisfactorily explain the matter as to what struck him or where it came from.

TARN Joseph - 1893 - 30/06/1893 – Age 22 – Hewer. Butterknowle, Butterknowle Coal Co. Ltd., Cockfield, Co.Durham. Hands and face burnt by explosion of gas. He passed two caution boards and a fence with a naked light. Died 10th July.

TARN Joseph - 1897 - 02/04/1897 – Age 48 – Stoneman. Woodland, Woodland Collieries Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He had fired a powder shot in the bottom of a stone drift and waited about forty five minutes and then went back and commenced to loosen the stone with a pick, when another explosion occurred injuring him so severely that he died shortly afterwards. The dirt had been driven a short time before, by means of gelatine dynamite, and it is supposed that a portion of a charge had not detonated and he struck it with a pick when loosening the stones.

TARPEY James - 1898 - 24/11/1898 – Age 43 – Dataller. Hewlett No. 2, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place. Although a collier had warned him he left a space unpropped, sounded not good.

TARRANT Edward G. - 1893 - 13/11/1893 – Age 17 – Labourer. Camerton, Miss Jarrett, Bath, Somerset. Explosion of dust. They having fired a shot in the roof, with half pound of powder, an ignition of dust caused an explosion which wrecked 1,000 yards of roadway. 2 killed.

TARREN William - 1899 - 06/05/1899 – Age 39 - Loco. Guard. Brandon Starkers and Love, Co.Durham. When lowering trucks down, from the screens, he got crushed between a truck and a wall. He was taken to the infirmary at Durham where he died one and a half hours afterwards.

TASKER George - 1896 - 24/10/1896 – Age 14 – Coupler. Cannock Chase, Cannock Chase Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Fall of roof in main coal.

TASKER James - 1895 - 07/05/1895 – Age 21 – Holer. Cannock Chase, Cannock Chase Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Fall of coal.

TATE John - 1894 - 14/08/1894 – Age 28 – Hewer. Thornley, Weardale Iron Co. Ltd., Thornley, Co.Durham. Head injured by fall of stone. Died on the 26th instant.

TATE Thomas - 1891 - 11/04/1891 – Age 17 – Mason. Usworth, John Bowes and Partners Ltd., Usworth, Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Explosion of steam boiler underground. 4 killed. 12.30 pm.

TATE William (non-fatal) - 1893 - 29/09/1893 – Age 39 – Miner. Snaefell (metalliferous). Unexpected fall of ground in stope. Tate is said to have tried the ground shortly before it fell and pronounced it safe. Three and half months off.

TATE William - 1894 - 25/06/1894 – Age 28 – Hewer. Broomhill, Broomhill Coal Co. Ltd., Broomhill, Northumberland. Inspection made. He was attempting to get into the workmen's carriages, when in motion, and fell under the wheels.

TATHAM David - 1893 - 12/06/1893 – Age 62 – Dataler. Manners, Manners Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Both were engaged in scaling up a fire in the mine but were suffocated by noxious gas issuing through a stopping which they were endeavouring to seal up. 2 killed.

TATLEY Moses - 1898 - 16/07/1898 – Age 40 – Fireman. Mabel, Crompton and Shawcross, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was a fireman assisting the packers in drawing timber forming the peck walls when a fall of roof occurred capping props and crushing the deceased.

TATLOCK James - 1898 - 02/05/1898 – Age 50 – Shifter. Murton, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. While putting a turn into a place and retimbering it, a fall of stone took place at a slip in the roof and killed them both. 2 killed.

TATTERSALL Thomas - 1896 - 10/01/1896 – Age 48 – Collier. Rowley, Executors of Col. Hargreaves, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place from between slips.

TATTON William - 1899 - 24/11/1899 – Age 14 – Driver. Shelton No. 1 Rowhurst, Shelton Coal Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Crushed by tubs while driving loads on level.

TAYLERSON N. - 1895 - 27/08/1895 – Age 20 – Driver. Wharncliffe Silkstone, Wharncliffe Silkstone Coal Co., Yorkshire. Caught by empty corves and pushed into the sump as the cage was descending.

TAYLOR A. - 1894 - 28/02/1894 – Age 63 – Labourer. Darfield Main, Darfield Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Run over by waggon.

TAYLOR A. - 1897 - 07/09/1897 – Age 18 – Filler. Woodthorpe, Nunnery Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

TAYLOR Abraham - 1896 - 05/05/1896 – Age 37 – Hewer. Heworth, Owners of Heworth Colliery, Heworth, Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was killed by a heavy fall of stone occurring in a broken jud quite unexpectedly. The place very shortly before had been considered in working order by the deputy.

TAYLOR Adam - 1898 - 24/03/1898 – Age 44 – Overman. Glenvault Fireclay, George Turnbull and Co., Dumbarton. A spark off his naked light ignited 14 lb of gunpowder, illegally stored in the mine.

TAYLOR Albert - 1899 - 23/10/1899 – Age 42 – Timberer. West Cannock, West Cannock Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof coal, 21 foot in length when ripping the road.

TAYLOR Alexander - 1899 - 09/04/1899 – Age 16 - Asst. ostler. Ferniegar, Archibald Russell, Lanarkshire. Deceased and another workman descended the shaft on the Sunday to feed the horses, and just as the cage arrived at a mid working, the Main Coal, they were both to get off, he fell into the shaft to the Splint coal, a distance of 11 fathoms. He was not the usual attendant on the horses but was acting in the place of another man who failed to turn out to his work.

TAYLOR Benjamin P. - 1893 - 11/05/1893 – Age 36 – Hewer. Framwellgate, Framwellgate Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Engaged filling a tub on the 3rd November 1892 when a piece of coal fell and severely cut his thumb. He was never able to work afterwards and died from the effects.

TAYLOR Charles (non-fatal) - 1892 - 26/11/1892 – Miner. North Motherwell, Merry and Cunninghame, Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working face.

TAYLOR Charles - 1892 - 29/01/1892 – Age 44 – Stoneman. Shilbottle, Shilbottle Coal Co., Shilbottle, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Explosion of gunpowder.

TAYLOR Charles - 1897 - 26/03/1897 – Age 57 – Roadsman. Devon, Alloa Coal Co., Clackmannan. Rupture of door or valve in a dam. 6 killed.

TAYLOR Charles - 1898 - 27/10/1898 – Age 22 – Quarrier. Duckworth Clough Quarry, Brooks and Pickup, Lancashire. Whilst lowering a stone, the crane chain, in passing from double to single coil, gave a jerk of 6 inches, jerking the handle out of his right hand, the handle struck him on the nose, knocking him into the well of the quarry, 13.3 feet deep. Died November 7th.

TAYLOR Charles - 1899 - 12/07/1899 – Age 57 - Chock drawer. Framwellgate, Framwellgate Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Drawing a jud in the brokens when large fall of stone took place and killed him.

TAYLOR Chistopher - 1899 - 18/07/1899 – Age 31 – Hewer. East Castle, East Pontop Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. While the deceased was hewing, a large circular stone suddenly fell from a slippery parting, two or three props being canted out by the fall. The deputy considered the place safe when he left it a short time previously.

TAYLOR Christopher - 1899 - 11/08/1899 – Age 28 – Hewer. Urpeth, C Charles Perkins and Partners, Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. While heaving in a narrow working a fall of stone took place from slips. About two hours previously the deputy considered the place quite safe but gave instructions to set more timber when the face was advanced a certain distance. This the deceased neglected to do.

TAYLOR Daniel - 1890 - 25/10/1890 – Age 29 - Taker off. Ashton Moss 6 foot, Ashton Moss Colliery Co., Audenshaw, Lancashire. Died 26th from an injury by a tub running down the gig brow where he worked, a prop supporting the gig having broken.

TAYLOR Daniel - 1896 - 30/04/1896 – Age 25. Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.

TAYLOR David - 1895 - 27/05/1895 – Age 35 – Labourer. Cwmaman, Cwmaman Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fell from 4 foot landing, a depth of 30 yards, the cage being suddenly lowered in response to a signal made from the 6 foot landing, while he was in the act of stepping out.

TAYLOR David - 1899 - 07/07/1899 – Age 19 – Labourer. Southam Iron Ore, Southam Haematite Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Poisoned by carbonic-oxide gas given off by burning timber. 4 killed.

TAYLOR Edward - 1892 - 21/11/1892 – Age 49 – Collier. Silverdale No. 6, Butterley Coal Co. Ltd., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Injured by fall of coal in a cage dip in 7 foot Banbury Seam. He had heart disease and bronchitis and died 1st February 1893.

TAYLOR Francis (non-fatal) - 1891 - 17/10/1891 – Age 25 – Drawer. West Benhar, Niddrie and Benhar Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of stone. Still off.

TAYLOR Fred - 1895 - 14/01/1895 – Age 28 – Collier. Audley, W Rigby and Co., Audley, Staffordshire. Irruption of water from old working. 77 killed.

TAYLOR G. - 1890 - 24/06/1890 – Age 48 – Banksman. Fryston, Fryston Coal Co., Pontefract, Yorkshire. Fell down shaft.

TAYLOR G. - 1893 - 28/03/1893 – Age 49 – Collier. Rothwell Haigh, J and J Charlesworth, Leeds, Yorkshire. Fall of roof, died 4th Apr.

TAYLOR George - 1890 - 02/05/1890 – Age 19 – Collier. Pochin, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. As shotfiring is only done when the persons, ordinarily employed, are out of the mine at night or between shifts, this man and his comrade had prepared a shot in the roof, where ripping was required, and having gone a distance on their way out Taylor turned back to fetch a shovel and passing under the stone, which they intended blasting, it fell upon him and killed him.

TAYLOR George - 1890 - 15/04/1890 – Age 19 – Collier. Pochin, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. A piece of overhanging clod and coal fell over the sprags, which were set, and rolled against him as he was on the floor using a large stone which they wanted to put into the waste. It came from a face slip.

TAYLOR George - 1890 - 15/09/1890 – Age 52 – Roadman. Park House, JH Pearson, Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fall of roof while repairing a jig road in Black Band Ironstone.

TAYLOR George - 1891 - 31/08/1891 – Age 39 – Furnaceman. Malgo, Bristol Collieries Co. Ltd., Bristol, Gloucester. Explosion of firedamp at naked 10 lights which were prohibited at the place. 10 killed.

TAYLOR George - 1893 - 06/06/1893 – Age 27 – Collier. Mosley Common, Bridgewater Trustees, Worsley, Lancashire. While setting a prop a quantity of roof fell on to him from between two slips. Prop ought to have been set sooner. Died 28th June.

TAYLOR Henry (non-fatal) - 1891 - 13/07/1891 – Age 45 – Labourer. Shieldhill, Carron Co., Stirling. Struck by crane handle. 84 days off.

TAYLOR Henry (non-fatal) - 1892 - 02/03/1892 – Age 17 – Pitman. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. The handle of a winch which he was working slipped from his hands and struck him.

TAYLOR Henry (non-fatal) - 1892 - 09/04/1892 – Age 25 – Pitheadman. Pentland, Clippens Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Crushed by tub. Still off.

TAYLOR Henry - 1895 - 15/11/1895 – Age 31 – Dataller. New Westhoughton, Westhoughton Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Lancashire. In drawing road 4 yds from face. He carelessly knocked out two props, being under a ley 18 inches thick. He could have stood under the hard main roof but trusted to its sounding good. Shotlighter present told him not to take the props.

TAYLOR J. - 1894 - 18/05/1894 – Age 23 – Byeworker. Featherstone, Featherstone Main Coal Co., Pontefract, Yorkshire. Fall of stone.

TAYLOR James - 1891 - 29/09/1891 – Age 46 – Fireman. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. There was a fall on a main road, and Taylor and another man went to repair it but whilst doing so another fall took place, some of which fell on the deceased causing injuries to which he succumbed on 9th October. 2.30 pm.

TAYLOR James - 1893 - 14/07/1893 – Age 42 – Collier. Treman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (6 feet x 3 feet x 14 inches thick) at face between timbers. Died 5th Nov. Two-feet-nine seam.

TAYLOR James - 1896 - 06/04/1896 – Age 19 – Loader. Riddings, James Oakes and Co., Nottinghamshire. He died from "intestinal obstruction" after an operation. He was reported as having had a slight accident but this did not accelerate his death. No inquest was held.

TAYLOR James - 1899 - 06/12/1899 – Age 54 - Waggon shifter. Tannochside No. 1, Archibald Russell, Lanarkshire. While bringing forward an empty wagon he appears to have been crushed by another two waggons, which unobserved had run forward by gravitation.

TAYLOR James - 1899 - 31/10/1899 – Age 45 – Stallman. Morton No. 6, Clay Cross Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was getting down coal from the face when a fall of roof occurred and fatally injured him. He died the same day.

TAYLOR Jesse - 1890 - 14/09/1890 – Age 53 – Dataler. Hanley Northwood, Hanley Colliery Co., Hanley, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp ignited by the fuse of a shot. Died 22nd October. Two others injured.

TAYLOR John (injured) - 1890 - 18/02/1890 – Miner. Ashton Moss 6 Foot, Ashton Moss Colliery Co., Audenshaw, Lancashire. Injured by coal thrown from the face by a cramp or subsidence of ground.

TAYLOR John (injured) - 1891 - 11/03/1891 – Age 20 – Drawer. Limehurst Peacock, Limehurst Coal Co., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Head cut against the roof, he having lost his light in coming out. Inspection and inquiry.

TAYLOR John (non-fatal) - 1891 - 08/04/1891 – Age 19 – Jigger. Arniston, Arniston Coal Co., Edinburgh. Fall of roof. 18 days off.

TAYLOR John (non-fatal) - 1892 - 28/05/1892 – Drawer. Garscube No. 6, James Dunlop and Co., Maryhill, Lanarkshire. Caught by runaway hutch.

TAYLOR John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 20/01/1893 – Age 30 – Miner. Carronhall, Carron Co., Stirling. Fall of coal. 119 days off.

TAYLOR John - 1890 - 03/09/1890 – Age 18 – Drawer. Garswood Hall, Garswood Hall Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. A drawer coming down brow omitted to put in a second scotch and the tub over powering him got away and caught deceased, who was at the bottom of the brow.

TAYLOR John - 1892 - 04/03/1892 – Age 29 – Fireman. Towneley, Brooks and Pickup, Towneley, Lancashire. Explosion of gunpowder. Two shots were prepared, deceased lit one and went back after report of the shot, when two yards from the face the second shot exploded, believed to have lit from the explosion of the first shot.

TAYLOR John - 1893 - 09/08/1893 – Age 14 - Pony driver. Blackhill No. 9, Summerlee and Mossend Iron and Steel Co., Maryhill, Lanarkshire. Pony ran away with a hutch of ashes and he fell and was run over.

TAYLOR John - 1893 - 10/01/1893 – Age 30 – Miner. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), Thomas Bolitho Sons and Others, St. Just, Cornwall. Irruption of water from Old Wheal Drea workings, which belong to the same mine. The plan being inaccurate misled the agent as regards the relative position of the workings. 20 killed.

TAYLOR John - 1893 - 25/07/1893 – Age 53 – Hewer. Cowpen Mill, Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Cowpen, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had gone about 8 feet under the ramble and had three props and a plank set and was apparently safe but a large stone suddenly fell from a slip running diagonally across the place and breaking off at the side knocking out two of the props which were under the lighter end of the stone. It would have been better if he got the ramble down.

TAYLOR John - 1893 – 30/07/1893 – Age 57 – Labourer. Ludworth, Weardale Iron Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died in hospital to-day from alleged injuries received to his foot while emptying a tub of stone on refuse heap a month ago. No confirmatory evidence it appears to be an old wound.

TAYLOR John - 1895 – 14/01/1895 – Age 40 – Crutter. Audley, W Rigby and Co., Audley, Staffordshire. Irruption of water from old working. 77 killed.

TAYLOR John - 1895 – 15/07/1895 – Age 34 – Collier. Westleigh, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. In working place, a large fall from between pronounced slips known to be there. Want of props 10 feet apart, want of directions on part of fireman having just left the place.

TAYLOR John - 1896 – 07/02/1896 – Age 38 – Shifter. Randolph, North Bitchburn Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. While walking on the waggonway he attempted to put some of his tools to the top of a tub, in a pony set, and got his head caught between the roof. Died on the 9th.

TAYLOR John - 1899 – 29/05/1899 – Age 37 – Fireman. Moss No. 4, Pearson & Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A part of the mine had been worked out and these two men (one being the fireman of the district) were getting out the rails and other things. They found firedamp had accumulated but they nevertheless, having put their safety lamps back, ventured into it to get an iron flat sheet which they had forgotten. They were both suffocated before they were got out. 2 killed.

TAYLOR Jonathan - 1894 – 28/02/1894 – Age 26 – Fireman. Riston, PW Pickup, Blackburn, Lancashire. Fall of roof in drawing road from clearly defined well known slip, it ought to have been pulled down. Died 4th Apr. About the time stated, a number of men were loosening props, which supported the roof in a roadway, and among them was Jonathan Taylor, aged 26, a fireman who lives at 2, Haworth Street in Rishton. This person was dropping props, by himself, and when he had dropped about half a dozen, a crack in the lower part of the roof occurred, and without a moments notice, a portion of the roof fell burying Taylor. Assistance was procured, but the unfortunate man was not extricated till three hours, when he was quite dead. It was then found that a stone weighing about ten tons had fallen upon the deceased, which had crushed him almost beyond recognition. His head was crushed to a pulp, and other parts of his body were dreadfully mangled. His body was brought to the pit mouth, and taken home. Deceased leaves a wife and one child. An inquest on the body was held at the Walmesley Arms, Rishton and Mr. W. Pickup of the Rishton Colliery. Richard Parker Banks, jig tenter at the Colliery residing at 2, Haworth Street, said the deceased was his brother-in-law, and they lived together. Deceased had been a fireman for four or five years, and had worked in the coal pit practically all his life. Thomas Addison, 27 Edward Street, Coal miner, said they had finished mining about two o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, and they then commenced to draw props. A verdict of Accidentally killed was returned. (Accrington Gazette.)

TAYLOR Joseph - 1898 - 19/12/1898 – Age 66 – Labourer. Twizell, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. When attempting to cross the railway, in front of a locomotive, he apparently misjudged the speed and was knocked down and killed. The engine was moving at about 3.5 miles an hour with the steam shut off.

TAYLOR Richard - 1892 - 05/02/1892 – Age 72 – Collier. Moss, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased had commenced holing the coal, alongside an old level, before propping the roof when a thin layer of stone fell upon him causing injuries to which he succumbed on the 17th instant.

TAYLOR Thomas - 1890 - 28/06/1890 – Age 50 – Waggoner. Muiredge, Bowman and Co., Fife. Fell before waggons. 2.30 pm.

TAYLOR Thomas - 1891 - 26/02/1891 – Age 46 – Collier. Moss, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. He was bringing a full tub down an incline when he slipped over a sleeper falling on his back and injuring his spine. He died on 23rd April. 8.0 am.

TAYLOR Thomas - 1892 - 24/07/1892 – Age 16 – Putter. Hamsterley, Hamsterley Coal Co., Hamsterley, Co.Durham. It is said that the boy got his head crushed between a prop and a tub on the 24th July, he continued at work until 1st September without complaining. He died on the 16th February 1893, and it is doubtful whether the accident had anything to do with his death.

TAYLOR Thomas - 1893 - 13/07/1893 – Age 44 – Dataller. Stoneclough, Stoneclough Coal Co., Manchester, Lancashire. Fall of side; came from a fault. A proper inspection would have discovered the danger and caused it to be secured either by pulling down or timbering.

TAYLOR Thomas - 1894 - 09/07/1894 – Age 38 – Stallman. Skeby, Skeby Colliery Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Fall of coal. Whilst pulling coal off the face, with a bar, a quantity fell on to him. He probably slipped in trying to get out of the way of the falling coal.

TAYLOR Thomas - 1896 - 13/11/1896 - Part owner. Parbold, stone (quarry), Winnard and Taylor, Wigan, Lancashire. He was standing below some men, who were getting stone, when one of the men pushed a stone down, warning the deceased he was going to do so. He was too slow in moving and the stone crushed his leg against another stone. He died shortly afterwards from the effects of this accident.

TAYLOR William - 1892 - 19/02/1892 – Age 62 – Miner. Buchshaft Iron (metalliferous), Henry Crawshay and Co. Ltd., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Fall of ground from a sandy joint. It seems that he was aware of the stone being dangerous, and he had set a prop under it and proposed setting another, telling his son that he would first work off a piece of ironstone at the side but while engaged doing so the stone fell and killed him. He was a miner of 40 years experience.

TAYLOR William - 1893 - 26/04/1893 – Age 27 – Drawer. Billinge Lane, Winstanley Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was descending the pit in the cage, with some other men, when the ascending cage stopped at the 5 feet mine to tiring up some night men. The deceased probably thought the cage had reached the bottom of pit and stepping out fell a distance of 36 yards and was killed. In future the cage, with men in, will be lowered direct to the bottom.

TAYLOR William - 1895 - 07/01/1895 – Age 19 – Drawer. Hewlett, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Alleged to have slipped and fallen into mine. Died on 26th. No proof that any injury was received in the mine.

TAYLOR William - 1898 - 18/01/1898 – Age 55 – Collier. Towneley, Brooks and Pickup, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place. Reckless disregard of faults in roof and neglect to prop.

TAYLOR William - 1899 - 11/08/1899 – Age 35 – Deputy. St Helens, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. Altering a pair of gears when the stone fell away and caught him on the back injuring him on the spine. Died the following day.

TAYTON Henry - 1891 - 18/09/1891 – Age 25 – Collier. Ocean Maindy, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Ystrad Rhondda, Glamorgan. While putting in a cog and filling up a cavity, formed by a fall of clod and coal at an overlap fault, a further fall occurred. Lower seam. Long wall.

TEAGUE Richard - 1890 - 16/06/1890 – Age 63 – Coupler. Saltwell, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcestershire. When uncoupling the D-link of the hauling rope he slipped and fell before the moving truck and was killed. Private branch railway.

TEAL R. - 1899 - 18/12/1899 – Age 58 – Blacksmith. Wharncliffe Silkstone, Wharncliffe Silkstone Coal Co., Yorkshire. His hand was struck on the anvil, blood poisoning supervened and he died 24th Dec.

TEASDALE Anthony - 1898 - 11/03/1898 – Age 19 – Labourer. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was working at a coal hopper and was found in it, covered with duff coal, but how he got there is not known. He was seen near the end of the shift, about 11.10 pm., and it was thought he had gone home and it was only when his father came to the pit next morning, to enquire where deceased was, that it was suspected he was in the hopper and a search being made it was found to be so.

TEASDALE E. - 1890 - 01/12/1890 – Age 14 - Tram boy. Allerton Bywater, S and HM Co., Castleford, Yorkshire. Injured by pulley.

TEASDALE Matthew - 1898 - 11/02/1898 – Age 54 – Hewer. Newbottle, Margaret Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Died while travelling outbye, on the engine plane, from heart failure. Ventilation all right.

TEBBETT Thomas - 1890 - 30/08/1890 – Age 36 – Stallman. Netherseal, Netherseal Colliery Co., Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Crushed by a loaded tub whilst endeavouring to lift it on to the rails. Injured May 17.

TEESDALE Harland - 1894 - 24/07/1894 – Age 28 – Shunter. Blackett, Blackett Coal Co., Blackett, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was shunting waggons, with a horse, and on trying to pass between the Buffers, when the waggons were too close, he was caught and crushed.

TEESDALE or TEASDALE Thomas - 1897 - 26/03/1897 – Age 19 - Stone putter. Eppleton, Hetton Coal Co., Co.Durham. Leg broken by a fall of stone while removing timber. Died eight hours afterwards.

TELFORD J. - 1896 - 02/12/1896 – Age 19 – Hurrier. Emley Moor, Jaggar and Co., Yorkshire. Fall of side. 2 killed.

TELFORD James Henry - 1897 - 12/04/1897 – Age 33 – Deputy. Framwellgate, Framwellgate Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was firing a shot in the longwall and there was a tub standing over the plate ends at the gateway, and after lighting the shot he went past this tub and down the gateway. The shot exploded and some of the coal knocked a prop out which hit the tub and it ran amain and caught the deceased, causing such severe injuries that he died the following day.

TELFORD John - 1897 - 30/09/1897 – Age 37 – Hewer. Linton, Ashington Coal Co., Northumberland. Inspection made. Deceased had fired a shot, the coals broke a prop 3 feet from the face. Instead of replacing the prop he filled all his loose coals and finding he had not sufficient to make out another tub he began hewing when a flat stone came away and killed him. The roof is not good and it is wet. Had he attended to the propping in all probability the accident would not have happened. There was plenty of timber ready.

TEMPEST John William - 1896 - 11/05/1896 – Age 24 – Hewer. Seaton Delaval, E&F Seaton Delaval Coal Co., Seaton Delaval, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Fall of coal at the working while he was filling his tub when a heavy fall of top coal occurred. His marrow said be had a stay in but it is very doubtful whether that was the case.

TENBY Peter (injured) - 1890 - 17/11/1890 – Age 32 – Miner. South Condurrow (metalliferous), South Condurrow Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Lost his footing and fell 10 fathoms on the flat lode. His injury was not serious.

TENNANT Archibald (non-fatal) - 1891 - 16/02/1891 – Miner. Kirkhill, Kirkhill Coal Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in working place.

TEREVETHAN William (injured) - 1890 - 16/05/1890 – Skipfiller. West Wheal Frances (metalliferous), West Wheal Frances Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Whilst engaged at his usual work one of the wheels of the skip passed over his foot and bruised it.

TERRY George - 1897 - 06/03/1897 – Age 22 – Sinker. Dover, Kent Collieries Corporation Ltd., Kent. Whilst engaged sinking a shaft water burst through the bottom. The hoppet was at the surface. The water rose rapidly only allowing six of the fourteen men in the shaft to escape. 8 killed.

TERRY George - 1898 - 02/04/1898 – Age 33 – Collier. Dukinfield Dewsnap, Dukinfield (New) Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Cheshire. Fall of roof between a small fault and a slip joint, at face of breasting in Roger mine, while he was cutting up to the fault line.

TETLEY J - 1898 - 29/10/1898 – Age 15 – Driver. Nostell, Lord St Oswald, Yorkshire. Fell off when driving, owing to corf leaving the rails, and was run over.

THACKRAY John - 1899 - 08/05/1899 – Age 43 – Engineer. South Tyne, W Hudspith, Northumberland. Inspection made. While foolishly stepping over the connecting rod while the pumping engine was in motion he was tripped up by the rod and fell underneath it.

THEOBALD Robert - 1896 - 14/01/1896 – Age 41 – Collier. Mosley Common, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place from between pronounced slips.

THICKETT W. - 1894 - 27/05/1895 – Age 23 - Water ladder. Woolley, Fountain and Burnley, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Injured by water barrel, died 30th.

THIRLAWAY John - 1892 - 05/02/1892 – Age 56 – Ropeman. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co.Durham. Died from the effects of a fall in the engine house lofts, while examining the ropes, 21st Jan 1889.

THIRWELL or THIRLWELL Thomas - 1896 - 31/10/1896 – Age 24 – Hewer. East Tanfield, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., East Tanfield, Co.Durham. Inspection made. This accident appears to have been very simple, a small stone having fallen from between timbers. It would have been better had he had another prop set. Died September 14, 1896.

THIRWELL Robert - 1892 - 12/04/1892 – Age 34 – Stoneman. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co. Ashington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Explosion of powder.

THIRWELL William (injured) - 1894 - 10/03/1894 – Age 51 – Fitter. Talk o’th’ Hill, Talk o’th’ Hill Colliery Ltd., Talk o’th’ Hill, Staffordshire. A piece of timber thrown from a circular saw struck him as he was passing four yards away. Arm broken and side bruised.

THOM James jnr. - 1897 - 07/08/1897 – Age 17 - Miner Gaturk Bank No. 1, William Dixon Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working face.

THOMAS A. - 1895 - 01/10/1895 – Age 25 – Carter. South Liberty, Aston Vale Iron Co. Ltd., Somerset. Killed on the spot by a fall of roof at the face from an unseen slip. The seam at this place is very steep.

THOMAS Albert Edward - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 25 – Fitter. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

THOMAS Alfred - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 21 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

THOMAS Alfred - 1893 - 15/07/1893 – Age 28 – Collier. Western, Ocean Coal Co., Nantymoel, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road while resting on side of heading. The place was said to have been well timbered. Six feet seam.

THOMAS C. - 1896 - 18/05/1896 – Age 23 – Filler. Denaby Main, Denaby and Cadeby Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

THOMAS Cadwaladr - 1896 - 12/06/1896 – Age 51 - Slate getter. New Welsh Slate, New Welsh Slate Co. Ltd., Merioneth. Breaking of a wooden bridge over which they were tramming too heavy a load of slate. Jones and Thomas were killed on the spot, William Evans died in a few hours, while another person Richard Evans was seriously injured. 3 killed.

THOMAS Charles - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 26 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

THOMAS Charles - 1892 - 21/11/1892 – Age 33 – Banksman. Llay Hall, ES Clark, Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was crushed by a full tub, from the upper deck, falling against him on the plates top of the pit; the deceased is supposed to have turned the catches before the cage was lowered on the keeps. Died Nov. 28th 1892.

THOMAS D.J. - 1893 - 30/01/1893 – Age 12 - Collier’s boy. Brithdir Dynevor, Duffryn Colliery Co., Neath, Glamorgan. Fall of side at face (coal and clod 27 feet x 16 inches x 22 inches thick) a most glaring case of want of sprags. Tir Edmund seam).

THOMAS Daniel - 1891 - 30/09/1891 – Age 32 – Sinker. Blaengwynfi, Glyncorrwg Colliery Co. Ltd., Blaengwynfi, Glamorgan. Overwinding of the bowk on which they were ascending the shaft of a sinking pit. 8 killed.

THOMAS Daniel - 1899 - 17/03/1899 – Age 42 – Collier. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face coal and clod 2.5 foot x 2 foot x 15 inches thick, fell off a slip while he was working away the bottom coal. He had been told by the fireman to take it down as it overhung by up to 7 inches, Four feet seam, 8 foot thick.

THOMAS David (injured) - 1899 - 19/08/1899. Llest, Llest Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 19 killed.

THOMAS David - 1890 - 29/07/1890 – Age 24 – Collier. Lewis Merthyr, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of top coal and a stone from the roof above in front of roadway. There was one prop in the middle and deceased was about to stand others. 4 foot seam. Longwall.

THOMAS David - 1891 - 07/07/1891 – Age 19 – Engineman. Werfa, James Evens and Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. He was attending a steam winch, used for drawing rubbish to the tip, and by some unknown means his clothes got entangled in it and he was drawn in between the two revolving shafts and crushed to death. The winch was fairly well fenced by iron bars.
