Run over by a runaway empty tram on an engine dip, the shackle having become detached through jerking caused by some of the other trains leaving the rails at a turn 800 yards higher up. 2 killed.
THOMAS William - 1895 - 17/01/1895 – Age 23 – Collier. Llanbradach, Cardiff Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. When engaged filling a tram with coal near the face of heading a large stone fell from the roof and struck him on the back causing injuries which terminated fatally on Feb. 12th 1895.

THOMAS William - 1895 - 23/08/1895 – Age 49 - Slate getter. Graig Ddu (quarry), TM Whittaker, Merioneth. Explosion of 75 lbs. of gunpowder which he had put into a hole in which three smaller charges had already been fired successively in order to enlarge the cavity and produce cracks, he was using an iron scraper in the hole to measure the height to which the powder rose and it is likely that a spark from it caused the ignition of the charge. Intervals of half an hour had been allowed between the successive firings. He was killed on the spot and another man, Vaughan, was injured.

THOMAS William Henry - 1892 - 31/12/1892 – Age 16 - Door boy. Risca, United National Collieries Ltd., Risca, Monmouth. While engaged doing the hauliers work, putting in sprags into the tram wheels, he stumbled and caused an abrasion of the skin on his arm. He continued to work up to 3rd Jan. when he further strained his arm. Pymaenia supervened and he died 9th Jan. The doctors evidence distinctly attributes the pymaenia to the accident.

The chain attaching two full boxes to the endless rope going upbrow slipped and the boxes, in running downbrow, collided with an empty tub at the level shunt causing a bar to be displaced which liberated the portion of which fell upon the three drawers who were having their breakfast at the time. The road was rough in places and ought to have been more substantially timbered. 3 killed.

THOMPSON John - 1898 - 10/09/1898 – Age 52 – Shaftsman. Clara Vale, Stella Coal Co., Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Another shaftman and deceased were engaged in removing a bunton, attached by a chain to a rope out of the shaft. The deceased was standing on a temporary scaffold, steadying the rope, when he overbalanced himself and fell a distance of 18 feet.

THOMPSON Joseph - 1898 - 03/02/1898 – Age 17 – Screener. Swalwell, Swalwell Garesfield Coal Co., Co.Durham. Inspection made. Deceased was replacing a full truck with an empty one, instead of passing outside one of the screen uprights, he attempted to go between it and the moving waggon, when he was crushed and received injuries from which he died on the following day.

THOMPSON Peter - 1895 - 17/01/1895 – Age 23 – Labourer. Albert Derbyshire, Silkstone Colliery Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. The two deceased were crushed whilst passing between the buffers of two railway wagons at the time that shunting operations were going on. 2 killed.
THOMPSON Richard - 1895 - 02/07/1895 – Age 16 – Driver. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co. Ltd., Ashington, Northumberland. Inspection made. Apparently a simple accident due to the neglect of deceased in putting in his cotter. The tubs had been off the road and the pony loosed off. After the tubs were put right the deceased unhooked his pony and got on to the limbers and started off the road, being on a decline. On coming to the bend, of the road where the pony would have to pull, the limbers came away and deceased fell under the tubs.
THOMPSON Robert - 1897 - 05/01/1897 – Age 52 - Clay getter. Bell’s Close Clay Quarry, Walter Scott Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made. Deceased at completion of his shift and after the quarry men had left the quarry ascended to a ledge, 7 feet or 8 feet high to get his jacket. According to the evidence he suffered from a weak heart and within the previous hour complained of a feeling of dizziness. Apparently he had a recurrence of this dizziness and had fallen from the ledge while in that state, as there was nothing in the condition of the quarry to account for the accident.

It fell over on them owing to an unseen slip at the back, and discharged two sprags which they had set before commencing to hole the coal. 2 killed.

THOMPSON William - 1897 - 31/08/1897 – Age 60 – Shifter. Usworth, J Bowes and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. Inquest attended. He was engaged clearing up the road near the face. It appeared he was possibly going in front of the tub, down a slight incline, when his head caught against a caunch. He had worked on the road for some time and it is inexplicable why he should have made so serious a mistake.
THOMPSON William - 1898 - 12/01/1898 – Age 14 – Wailer. Lumley, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. He was running across the branch railway when he slipped on the rails, just as two full trucks were being lowered down from under the screens, and the first wheel of the first truck passed over his leg. Died from shock the same day after the leg had been amputated.
THOMPSON William - 1898 - 17/01/1898 – Age 27 – Engineman. Choppington, Bebside Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was about to fill lubricators, attached to the screening machinery, but instead of stopping the engine or going around, he went over the screen belt and slipped on the cog wheels.
THOMPSON William - 1899 - 10/06/1899 – Age 39 – Quarryman. Middle Park, Limestone Quarry, Bowne and Shaw, Derbyshire. Deceased was recharging a shot hole a few minutes after it had been fired a spent awhile pouring grain gunpowder into the hole, it fired and exploded the whole of the gunpowder in his powder can. Two others were injured. Deceased died on the 14th instant.

THOMSON Hugh - 1897 - 22/01/1897 – Age 28 – Engineman. Little Raith, Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. The winding rope broke while deceased were descending the shaft. The rope was made of steel wires and 1.5 inch diameter and had been in use since August 1894. The shaft is 100 fathoms deep and the rope broke 20 fathoms from the cage. The shaft was warm from the presence of steam pipes. Tests made after the accident gave a breaking strain of 21 tons but torsional tests showed that the quality of the wire had much deteriorated. 2 killed.

THORNE John - 1891 - 10/12/1891 – Age 35 – Engineplaneman. Whitworth Drift, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. About 300 yards from the mouth of the drift he was engaged cleaning between the rails. At this point there is a curve but not a very sharp one. He either did not notice the approach of the first journey out, in consequence of the noise made by the rollers for carrying the rope or he misjudged its distance and continued at work too long. He was dragged about 60 yards before he was noticed and the engine stopped. He was then found dead under the train. There was at least 6 feet clear from the side of the rails besides large manholes 20 yards apart.

THORNTON Richard - 1896 - 26/05/1896 – Age 46 – Collier. Mount Pleasant, JB Gregory and Co., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. While his partner was engaged pulling down a piece of coal, off the face, a fall of roof occurred between two slips capping three or four props and killing the deceased.

THORP Peter (injured) - 1891 - 14/09/1891 – Age 17 - Engine tenter. Cleworth Hall, Black and White Tyldesley Coal Co. Ltd., Shakerley, Lancashire. Injured by the Cog wheels of the engine that was used for drawing mineral only along a plane. Inspection and inquiry.
THORPE H. - 1895 - 16/01/1895 – Age 30 – Byeworker. Soothill Wood, Soothill Wood Coal Co., Yorkshire. Crushed by Corves on engine plane.
THORPE Herbert - 1895 - 10/01/1895 – Age 14 – Horsedriver. Portland No. 4, Butterley Co. Ltd., Nottinghamshire. He attempted to lower an empty tub down an inclined roadway by going in front. The tub overpowered the deceased and ran over him.
THORPE James - 1890 - 16/09/1890 – Age 43 – Miner. Victoria 7 foot, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Atherton, Lancashire. Died 17th from injuries by top coal falling where he was working.
THORPE John (injured) - 1890 - 06/03/1890 – Age 35 – Drawer. Ashton Moss 6 Foot, Ashton Moss Colliery Co., Audenshaw, Lancashire. Thigh broken by roof falling from slips where he was filling coal that had been taken down the day before.
THORPE William - 1890 - 14/06/1890 – Age 52 – Stallman. Manners, Manners Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Whilst he was holing coals a piece of roof fell upon him.
THURKETTLE William - 1898 - 03/06/1898 – Age 35 – Hewer. Kimblesworth, Charlaw and Sacriston Collieries Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was hewing in a broken jud when the roof fell right across it at slips without any warning and killed him. The stone measured 18 feet long by 6 feet wide by 3 feet thick.

TIBBETTS Benjamin - 1891 - 06/03/1891 – Age 23 – Loader. Spingfield, Spingfield Colliery Co., Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. Fall of coal from roof caused by a bump.
TIBBETTS Joseph - 1893 - 23/10/1893 – Age 65 – Watchman. Bournchills, Bournchills and Withymoor Colliery Co., Netherton, Staffordshire. Fell down shaft from surface. 2 killed.
TICKLE James - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 23 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.
TICKLE James - 1895 - 27/07/1895 – Age 21 – Miner. Killifreth (metalliferous), Killifreth Mine Adventurers Cornwall. Along with a comrade he was being wound up about 80 fathoms by an underground compressed air engine, from the bottom of sinking shaft after lighting some shots. The candles, being extinguished, deceased was caught under the pump cistern which although only or 10 inches clear from the side of the kibble was not protected with sliding boards as it should have been.
TIDSWELL William - 1897 - 12/11/1897 – Age 31 – Dayman. Newstead Top Hard Coal, Newstead Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was setting a prop, to secure the safety of the stall, when a quantity of roof fell upon him. He died the next day.

TIERNEY John (non-fatal) - 1890 - 14/02/1890 – Age 27 – Miner. Burntisland, Burntisland Oil Co. Ltd., Fife. Fall of shale. 49 days off.
TIERNEY John - 1898 - 25/06/1898 – Age 30 – Hewer. North Bitchburn, North Bitchburn Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was finishing taking out part of a pillar of coal when a fall of roof took place and killed him.
TIFFIN Edward - 1897 - 06/04/1897 – Age 56 – Engineman. Allhallows, Allerdale Coal Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He descended the shaft, about 5 p.m., and signalled that he was all right. About 10 o'clock some workmen were being lowered and, on nearing the bottom felt the cage strike something, which turned out to be the deceased whose head was partly under the cage. It is thought that he had taken a fit. Everything was in order at the bottom.

TILCOCK George - 1898 - 24/02/1898 – Age 17 - Horse driver. Sewell, Chalk Quarry, BJ Forder and Son, Bedford. The deceased was driving a horse, after freeing it from the waggon, he stepped in front of a loaded wagon, running along the tramway and over. He died the following day.
TILEY James - 1895 - 23/12/1895 – Age 31 – Collier. Ebbw Vale Marine, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. Fall of roof from slips in the Old Coal. It fell from between supports while he was wedging down coal from the face.
TILEY Joseph (non-fatal) - 1893 - 18/11/1893 – Age 39 – Quarryman. Kingsdown (metalliferous), Bath Stone Firms Ltd., Farleigh, Somerset. In jumping to get clear of a detached piece of stone, which he was assisting to roll out from its place, he alighted unfortunately and fractured his leg.

TILLEY Edward - 1897 - 15/06/1897 – Age 74 – Wagonshifter. Rowlands Gill, Lily Joseph Cowpen and Co., Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was helping with the arrangement of the wagons near the screens. He drove his horse too near the wagons, which were standing, and attempting to cross from one side to the other he was caught and knocked down by the buffers.

TIMSON Thomas - 1898 - 19/04/1898 – Age 30 – Stallman. Whitwick No. 5, Whitwick Colliery Co., Leicestershire. A fire broke out on the main airway of the mine and developed so rapidly that only six men, including the deputy, out of a total of 41, who were at work beyond the fire were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.

TINKLER Robert - 1898 - 08/01/1898 – Age 45 – Rolleywayman. Murton, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died today from the effects of an accident caused by a fall of stone in March 26th 1889.
TINLIN Martin - 1896 - 15/09/1896 – Age 24 – Labourer. Grimshaw Stone Quarry. Executors of John Makinson, Lancashire. The face of clay cover was 22 feet high in two steps or benches. The top bench had been holed under and some piles had been partly driven behind to get the clay down but it failed to come, and the men went on working below, when a portion fell and struck the deceased.
TINSLEY D. - 1891 - 29/04/1891 – Age 19 – Dataler. Harrison & Woodburn, Madeley Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Leycett, Staffordshire. Crushed by tubs while lowering them down engine dip.
TINSLEY John - 1899 - 23/02/1899 – Age 38 – Collier. Hewlett No. 1, Arley Wigan Coal and Iron Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place up to pronounced fault, two more props set would have saved his life.
TIPLADY James - 1898 - 04/07/1898 – Age 39 – Hewer. Harraton, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. While hewing in a bord, a piece of stone fell away and caught him on the head and body, from the effects of which he died within a few minutes.
TIPPENY James (non-fatal) - 1892 - 19/09/1892 – Brusher. Orbiston No. 3, Summerlee and Mossend Iron and Steel Co., Bellshill, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp caused by a shot of gunpowder. 9 injured.
TIPPETT Albert - 1897 - 09/07/1897 – Age 23 – Labourer. Hanham, Briston United Collieries Co., Gloucester. Fall of roof. He was sent to fetch some timber for a place where he and another were repairing and is supposed to have gone back into a roadway and knocked out some timber and he was found with the fall above him. He died from the effects of the accident on the 21st January 1898.
TIPPETT Alfred Jabez - 1897 - 08/07/1897 – Age 24 - Hanham Pit, Bristol, Gloucester. Of Longwell Green. Tippett was making a wind hole on Jubilee Deep Side, with Thomas Stone and Thomas Hillman, both of St. George. Hillman went to get timber and heard a cry. He found Tippett lying in the road with a stone across his legs and another across his back. Tippett was admitted to the Infirmary with a broken back. It seems that he tragically lingered, for the inquest was not reported until the 29/01/1898.
TIPPETT James - 1891 - 22/01/1891 – Age 14 - Collier’s boy. New Tredegar, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., New Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of coal from the face. It came off at a slip and fell upon his head while in a stooping position. There was a sprag set within a yard of the lump but the slip rendered it ineffective.
TIPPETT Thomas (non-fatal) - 1892 - 02/03/1892 – Age 26 – Miner. Cooks’ Kitchen (metalliferous), Cooks’ Kitchen Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Fell off a scaffold or staging on which he was working in a stope.
TIPPINS Samuel - 1894 - 12/05/1894 – Age 66 – Repairer. Waun Llwyd, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. He tripped over the hauling rope while engaged cleaning the road. He injured his elbow lightly but continued his work. An abscess it appears formed subsequently which resulted in his death. Nothing was known of the case at the Colliery as he had not reported it, and his absence was taken no notice of in consequence of his having previously lost a great deal of time owing to ill health.

TODD Adam - 1898 - 22/06/1898 – Age 13 – Driver. Brandon, Strakers and Love, Co.Durham. He was standing by the side of the way, putting a sprag into his set, when a stone fell from between two slips in the roof and killed him.

TODD John - 1897 - 21/03/1897 – Age 42 – Deputy. Asby, Asby Colliery Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was a night shift deputy and as he had only a few men in the pit was working temporally at the pit top with the tubs. The mouth of the shaft is protected by moving bars and it was his duty to see that they were down after the cage had left the top. He appears to have worked for some time and had neglected to put one of these bars down and in shoving a tub towards the shaft, for the cage, he found himself at the wrong side and he and the tub went to the bottom. The accident happened at night but it was said that there was sufficient light at the place. The bars were in working order.
TODD John - 1899 - 08/06/1899 – Age 24 – Borer. Cragwood Whinstone Quarry, R Summerson and Co., Co.Durham. Killed by a stone from a gelatine shot. A quarryman was charging a shot hole and was using a steel tool for a rammer which caused a premature explosion.
TODD John - 1899 - 14/11/1899 – Age 35 – Miner. Fordell, Fordell Trustees, Fife. Deceased carrying some of his tools was ascending the shaft along with other miners and he fell off the cage.
TODD Joseph - 1890 - 08/09/1890 – Age 39 – Stoneman. Castle Eden, Castle Eden Coal Co., Castle Eden, Co.Durham. Died today from effects of sprain said to have been received slipping when loading timber in the pit on 9th of December last.

TODHUNTER Isaac - 1891 - 24/04/1891 – Age 60 - Lead miner. Woodend (metalliferous), Threlkeld Mining Co., Threlkeld, Cumberland. Deceased had fired a shot and was dressing the ground down, when a piece of rock fell from a slip on to him causing injuries which proved fatal. Inspection made and inquest attended. 6.0 pm.
TOFT Thomas - 1890 - 15/08/1890 – Age 44 – Shotlighter. Edge Green, Richard Evans and Co., Golborne, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had charged three shots and after lighting the first two was evidently trying to light the third when those first ignited exploded, and he was found dead under the coal. This was a gross breach of the rules.

TOLMIE James - 1891 - 10/01/1891 – Age 17 – Drawer. Mauricewood, Shotts Iron Co., Edinburgh. Crushed by tub.
TOMBLIN Dennis - 1898 - 31/08/1898 – Age 40 - Engine driver. Barnstone Limestone Quarry, Barnstone Blue Lias Lime Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased went down a well, to repair a pump, and was overcome by carbonic acid fumes which suffocated him.
TOMKINS Frederick - 1892 - 12/10/1892 – Age 15 - Taker off at bottom of jig. Bradford, Bradford Collieries Co., Manchester, Lancashire. Riding in last tub of empty train drawn by horse, along level the tub left the rail, knocked out two props causing the roof to fall on him.
TOMKINS Samuel - 1891 - 11/12/1891 – Age 24 – Collier. Vauxhall, Vauxhall Colliery Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was pulling coals off the face when a large piece of roof coal, 2 foot in thickness fell upon him and killed him. The roof was full of slips but a little more precaution, on the part of the deceased, and this accident might have been prevented. 10.30 am.
TOMKINSON James - 1897 - 06/09/1897 – Age 37 – Collier. Leycett Fair, Lady Madeley Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of coal from working face in Seven feet Banbury seam. Died 20th 1897. He was working in front of a piece of underholed coal, which should have been spragged by him.
TOMKINSON John - 1895 - 25/07/1895 – Age 29 – Hewer. Wardley, John Bowes and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. Inspection made. Deceased had prepared a shot in the top coal and whilst waiting for the deputy, who was in the other side of the double jud, he went recklessly under the coal to set a few shovels full to fill out his tub when the coal fell on him.
TOMKINSON Thomas - 1892 - 31/08/1892 – Age 36 – Crutter. Podmore Hall, Minnie, Midland Coal Coke and Iron Co. Ltd., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fall of stone from side of engine dip while widening road (in a crut).
TOMLINSON Anthony Alexander - 1895 - 17/11/1895 – Age 28 – Chargeman. Whinney Hill, Altham Colliery Co., Lancashire. In haulage road being repaired. A stone, 6 foot long, 8 foot 6 inches wide, fell on him as he was walking underneath. There were bars under the roof, a foot from the end of the stone. There should have been a bar under the ley edge. A married man, residing at 47, Henry street, Clayton-le-Moors, he was engaged underground cutting a road, a stone measuring six feet by four slipped, and the deceased who was in a stooping position received the full weight of the great stone on his back. The stone was removed, and the man released by his comrades and removed to his home, and later to the Blackburn Infirmary. His injuries were of a very serious nature, and faint hopes were entertained of his recovery. Deceased lingered on until Thursday. An inquest was opened on Friday, and after the evidence of the medical surgeon, which was to the effect that the deceased died from a rupture, the inquest was adjourned to Thursday in order that Her Majesty's Mines Inspector might be present. The adjourned inquest was held at Blackburn on Thursday when the jury returned a verdict of accidental death. It was stated that the stone weighed 4 cwt. and required four men to lift it off the deceased. One of the witnesses stated that he tried the roof on the Saturday before the accident, and it seemed quite safe. (Accrington Observer).
