THOMAS David - 1891 - 10/02/1891 – Age 32 – Rider. Penydarren, Dowlais Iron Co., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. While following a journey of four trams up an incline the hitching plate, of the first tram broke then the bar hook attached to the last tram gave way and the trams ran back upon him crushing him to death.
THOMAS David - 1891 - 21/09/1891 – Age 17 – Collier. Humfrays Level, Rudry Merthyr Steam & House Coal Colliery Co. Ltd., Rudry, Glamorgan. Fall of coal from the face. It fell from a slip or natural face. It appears to be another case of a life lost through neglect of spragging. The case is however, in other respects also unsatisfactory with regard to the management although I have not been able to definitely fix a contravention of the Act.
THOMAS David - 1893 – 08/12/1893 – Age 24 – Banksman. Llanbradach, Cardiff Steam Collieries Co. Ltd., Pwllypant, Glamorgan. While putting the box or cradle into the shaft, for the fitters who were going to do some work at the pumps or steam pipes, the side boards around which he had put the chains for lifting it gave way and he fell down the shaft with it. The arrangements for this work were unsatisfactory.
THOMAS David - 1893 – 10/02/1893 – Age 23 – Collier. Llwyn, Nevill Druce and Co., Llanelly, Carmarthen. While riding on a water tank, with three others, in the absence of the rider the tank tilted and he fell off and was fatally injured. The incline rose 33 inches per yard. There was only 5 inches clearance between top of tank and timbers.
THOMAS David - 1893 – 11/10/1893 – Age 13 – Collier’s boy. Cwmaman, Cwmaman Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (rock) at face, while carrying coal along the face. This stall was said to have been fairly well timbered but the fall was such a large one that the statement could not be verified. Two-feet-nine seam.
THOMAS David - 1893 – 12/05/1893 – Age 39 – Fireman. Penrhiwfer, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Run over by trams while walking up slant. Died 25th June.
THOMAS David - 1895 – 02/10/1895 – Age 26 – Collier. Dynevoir-Brithdir Main Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While riding in a tram, sitting on a prop, he was crushed against the roof. Died 5th May. Riding not allowed.
THOMAS David - 1896 – 20/10/1896 – Age 56 – Roadsman. Gadlys Dyllas Drift, Waynes Merthyr Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall on road (stone 3 foot x 3 foot x 7 to 4 inches ) while laying rails before it was properly timbered.
THOMAS David - 1896 – 27/11/1896 – Age 60 – Miner. Freehold & East Holway (metalliferous), H Hotchkiss, Flint. He fell a distance of about 4 feet while descending some stopes by means of the cross-timbers (semples) and struck against the side of the excavation fracturing a rib. He walked home but pneumonia set in and he died on the 7th Dec.

THOMAS David - 1898 - 02/11/1898 – Age 39 – Repairer. Ferndale No. 2, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side on road where a fall of roof 12 foot in length was being cleared. Bute seam.
THOMAS David - 1899 - 19/08/1899 – Age 41 – Collier. Llest, Llest Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 19 killed.
THOMAS Donald - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 15 – Haulier. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.
THOMAS E. - 1899 - 05/11/1899 – Age 56 – Pumpman. Cymmer Glyncorrwg, Cymmer Glyncorrwg Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While going to his work, at a steam pump on a Sunday morning, he climbed over a fall of roof which had broken a steam pipe and was so overcome by the heat that he died shortly after being brought out. Doctor's evidence showed he was not scalded, and that death was due to shock and partial suffocation.
THOMAS E. - 1899 - 06/08/1899 – Age 45 – Fireman. Bedlinog No. 1, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Deceased had been helping to push a tram to the shaft when it is supposed he slipped on the rail and fell into the sump, just as the cage descended.

THOMAS Edwin - 1895 - 24/08/1895 – Age 24 - Night haulier. International, International Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. A bridge 5 yards long supported by five pairs of timbers collapsed as he was passing with his horse and empty tram. Six feet seam.
THOMAS Elias - 1892 - 14/05/1892 – Age 25 – Collier. Llwynypia No. 6, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Llwynypia, Glamorgan. Fall of side coal after knocking out sprag. Seam irregular, 13 foot thick and slanty.
THOMAS Enoch - 1894 - 09/10/1894 – Age 57 – Cartman. Hetty, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. While unloading his cart the horse bolted, throwing him out of the cart against the base of the chimney stack.
THOMAS Ephraim - 1895 - 26/08/1895 – Age 25 – Collier. Mardy Locketts, Merthyr Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof 7 foot x 2.5 foot x 1 foot thick at face, one prop discharged. Two feet nine seam. Died from injuries 17th January 1896.

THOMAS Evan - 1891 - 04/08/1891 – Age 13 - Lamp cleaner. Cymmer, Cymmer Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Foot injured by Fisher’s banking apparatus and died on 12th August after amputation. He had no right to be near the place.
THOMAS Evan - 1892 - 23/03/1892 – Age 16 – Collier. Ynyshir, Ynyshir Steam Coal Co., Ynyshir, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on double parting breaking through a stage left by night repairers.
THOMAS Evan - 1894 - 24/04/1895 – Age 34 – Collier. Powell Duffyn Fforchaman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of bastard rock, 7 foot x 5 foot x 18 inches thick in middle, from between two unseen slants, props close to edge but not under portion of roof which fell. Two feet nine seam.
THOMAS Evan - 1898 - 01/03/1898 – Age 48 – Collier. British Rhondda, Davis British Rhondda Steam Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face roof coal, 6 feet x 5 feet x 2.5 feet thick, from between four slips on crushing out one prop. Lower four feet seam.
THOMAS Evan - 1898 - 14/05/1898 – Age 55 – Fireman. Gwaun-cae-gurwen, Gwaun-cae-gurwen Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While exercising a horse, during the strike, he rode on a tram containing rubbish and the horse, being restive, suddenly stopped throwing deceased forward his head coming into contact with the sharp corner of the iron tram.
THOMAS Evan W. - 1898 - 20/07/1898 – Age 28 – Collier. Penygraig, Penygraig Colliery Co. Glamorgan. Struck by haulage rope and pulleys at a curve while passing out from their work. Two others injured. The strain which caused the pulleys to be torn from their fastenings was the result of a journey having been drawn into the terminal sheaf, the engineman having apparently missed his mark on the rope. 3 killed.
THOMAS Frederick (injured) - 1890 - 09/01/1890 – Age 30 – Miner. Cook’s Kitchen (metalliferous), Cook’s Kitchen Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. He was engaged in cutting down the side of a level, in order to sink a winze, when a stone came out of the side and broke his leg.
THOMAS Frederick - 1895 - 30/08/1895 – Age 30 – Collier. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co. Ltd., Bickershaw, Lancashire. Inspection and inquiry made. A temporary fence was placed around part of the staging platform to where coal was landed. Three planks had been left near the edge of staging, repairs to one of them, it fell to the ground door, a distance of 20 feet, said to have been disturbed by the storm blowing, the time it struck the deceased as he was passing below.
THOMAS G. - 1890 - 28/02/1890 – Age 40 – Collier. Sharlston, Sharlston Coal Co., Normanton, Yorkshire. Fall of stone.
THOMAS George - 1890 - 06/11/1890 – Age 14 - Asst wasteman. Merthyr Vale, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Merthyr Vale, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (clod, 13 feet x 4 feet x 2 feet) between face and gob wall. Five props discharged. The fall took place between two slants which were visible. 4 foot seam, 5 foot thick. Longwall. 2 killed.
THOMAS George - 1891 - 21/12/1891 – Age 48 – Collier. Bonvilles Court, Bonvilles Court Coal Co., Saundersfoot, Pembroke. Fall of roof (9 feet x 3 feet x 18 inches to nothing in thickness) at face of heading 7.5 feet wide being driven through seam of culm 4.5 feet thick. The roof (shale) was not double timbered up to the face. Props 3 feet apart on each side of roadway.
THOMAS George - 1896 - 28/08/1896 – Age 75 Labourer. Treefield Road Brickworks (quarry), William Roach, Gloucester. Fall of ground. The earth or bricking which fell from the side catching him, he fell and struck his head against one of the tram rails, resulting in death shortly after.
THOMAS George - 1897 - 03/11/1897 – Age 23 – Collier. Pandy, Naval Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, top coal and brass 2 foot x 10 inches thick, one prop discharged. Four feet seam.
THOMAS George - 1898 - 21/06/1898 – Age 44 – Labourer. Aberceg, Executors of the late Henry Powell, Monmouth. While letting two full railway trucks into the siding, after having been weighed, he slipped on the rail and was run over.
THOMAS Gomer - 1892 - 29/02/1892 – Age 27 – Fireman. Penrhiwfer, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Penygraig, Glamorgan. By explosion of dynamite which the deceased fireman was thawing at a paraffin lamp in the cabin near the shaft bottom. 3 killed.
THOMAS Gomer - 1894 - 06/01/1894 – Age 31 – Collier. National United, National Collieries Ltd., Wattstown, Glamorgan. Fall of top coal (roof) at face (5 feet x 2 feet x 14 inches thick). Died 21st May. Two feet nine seam.
THOMAS Griffith - 1890 - 25/10/1890 – Age 60 – Collier. Lewis Merthyr Coedcae, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof clift, 5 feet x 22 inches x 21 inches thick, between two vertical joints and a smooth slip close to face. Timbered on each side but no props where fall occurred. No. 8 Rhondda seam.
THOMAS Gwynne - 1893 - 10/10/1893 – Age 53 – Collier. Ferndale No. 4, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fall of roof, (11 foot 6 inches x 4 foot 6 inches x 15 inches thick) while placing a stone beneath some rippings which he was getting down by wedging. Five feet seam.
THOMAS H. - 1899 - 23/01/1899 – Age 27 – Fireman. Oak, Ffaldau Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road, a fall had occurred at the mouth of the level and some men were busy clearing when the fireman arrived. He went up on the fall to examine the roof when a newly put up collar broke which caused a fresh fall and buried him. Victoria seam.
THOMAS Hall - 1896 - 30/07/1896 – Age 36 – Stoneman. Hartford, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Hartford, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had fired a shot during the previous night and was riddling the stones and timbering into the face when a slab of stone fell on to his head. He appeared to have been taking ordinary care.
THOMAS Henry (injured) - 1894 - 18/01/1894 – Age 30 – Bricklayer. Grange, R Heath and Sons, Burslem, Staffordshire. Fall of roof in crut where they were building an arch. 2 injured. Leg broken.
THOMAS Henry - 1893 - 07/09/1893 – Age 50 – Platelayer. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Crushed by runaway trams at the bottom of the rubbish tip incline in consequence of the breaking of a hitching plate. Henry Thomas died 9th Sept. 2 killed.
THOMAS Henry - 1894 - 25/06/1894 – Age 22 – Labourer. Dowlais Longwork, Dowlais Iron Co. Cwmbargoed, Glamorgan. Run over by a rubbish wagon on the tip having stumbled in getting off the front buffer.
THOMAS Henry - 1895 - 01/06/1895 – Collier. Lewis Merthyr Hafod, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of clift 13.5 feet long from 3 feet to 6 feet wide 3 feet thick, from a face slip running down to coal just as he was in the act of pulling down the coal from under the foot of it, five props discharged. Four feet seam.
THOMAS Henry - 1898 - 12/09/1898 – Age 48 - Asst. repairer. Norths Caerau, Norths Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road, strong clift 3 feet x 3 feet x 6 inches thick, from a vertical joint visible before where ripping had just been done by blasting. Six feet seam.
THOMAS Herbert - 1893 - 27/09/1893 – Age 33 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on main road as he was passing. He had been cautioned by the rider not to pass as the roof was uneasy. Four feet seam.
THOMAS Howell - 1896 - 28/01/1896 – Age 50 – Collier. Blaennant, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp.
THOMAS Hugh (non-fatal) - 1893 - 29/09/1893 – Age 15 - Slate maker. New Welsh Slate. He inadvertently put his hand too far while dressing slates with a machine and had the flesh torn off one of his fingers. Still not resumed work March 1894.
THOMAS Hugh - 1898 - 03/03/1898 – Age 21 – Labourer. Penyrorsedd Slate Quarry, Penyrorsedd Slate Quarries Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. He was removing the overburden sitting of boulder clay. While undermining a portion fell upon him and killed him on the spot.
THOMAS Isaac - 1891 - 03/03/1891 – Age 17 – Rider. Gelli Steam, Gelli & Tynybedw Colliery Co. Ltd., Ystrad Rhondda, Glamorgan. Fell off journey on engine plane and was run over.
THOMAS Isaac - 1893 - 21/02/1893 – Age 28 – Metalman. Worsley Menses, Worsley Menses Colliery Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. When driving an exploring level, to prove through some disturbed ground, a fall occurred from between two steps crossing the road which they had neglected to timber. The officials should have instructed that the place should have been propped during their last examination.

THOMAS James - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 39 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.
THOMAS James - 1892 - 14/01/1892 – Age 39 – Pitman. Ferndale No. 2, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fell off cage while descending the band of the cage, caught the fangs and caused a jerk.
THOMAS James - 1893 - 10/01/1893 – Age 25 – Miner. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), Thomas Bolitho Sons and Others, St. Just, Cornwall. Irruption of water from Old Wheal Drea workings, which belong to the same mine. The plan being inaccurate misled the agent as regards the relative position of the workings. 20 killed.
THOMAS James - 1895 - 03/07/1895 – Age 46 – Collier. Cwmbargoed, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Fall of clod, 18 inches thick, 3 foot long 4 inches wide, while passing in front after trying to take it down. It was not overhanging and one sprag was near the end. Top coal seam.
THOMAS James - 1897 - 09/08/1897 – Age 63 – Engineman. South Duffryn Hills, Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by balance beam of Cornish pumping engine, which he had charge of, while attempting to pass under it.
THOMAS James - 1897 - 30/03/1897 – Age 34 – Haulier. Tir Pentwys, Tir Pentwys Black Vein Steam & Coke Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Run over by trams having apparently been riding on the gun or horse limbers and fallen off in front of the trams.
THOMAS Job - 1892 - 02/12/1892 -Age 41 – Collier. River Level, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face not sufficiently timbered.
THOMAS John (injured) - 1891 - 11/08/1891 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath, Camborne, Cornwall. While clearing away some of the foot wall, to make room for timber which they were about to set at the 314-fathom level, some rocks came away killing Tucker, breaking Thomas's leg and slightly injuring two of their comrades. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental Death." 1 killed, 1 injured.
THOMAS John (injured) - 1894 - 17/09/1894 – Age 41 - Slate getter. Oakeley (slate). The deceased, and another man, were trying to blast off from the side of a pillar, a huge block weighing between 40 and 50 tons. The 8 feet pillaring hole they had bored was charged and fired with time in succession without detaching the mass but about 20 to 30 minutes after the third firing a thin slab fell off and killed John Thomas. He and his partner sounded the place whence the slab fell and thought it safe.
THOMAS John (injured) - 1894 - 23/03/1894 – Age 48 - Slate getter. New Welsh Slate. A stone lying on the floor of his chamber turned over onto his foot and broke one of the bones. Six and a half weeks off.
THOMAS John (injured) - 1894 - 25/07/1894 – Age 22 - Slate getter. Oakeley (slate). While at work, in underground chamber, he was struck by a stone from a blast in a chamber two floors higher up. He knew a shot was going to be fired but did not think it necessary to retire. Severe wound on back of neck. Seven and three quarter weeks off.

THOMAS John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 01/06/1893 – Age 45 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). A big stone, which was being dragged with a crane, lurched and caused the handle to strike his arm and break it. Four and three quarter weeks off.
THOMAS John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 15/08/1893 – Age 47 – Tributer. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Wheal Agar Adventurers, Illogan, Cornwall. While travelling along the 150-fathom level, near the bottom of the pass, a small stone struck his head and cut it.
THOMAS John - 1890 - 03/04/1890 – Age 22 – Collier. Glanywern, Howell and Rees, Llansamlet, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (clod, 8 feet x 8 feet x 21 inches thick) in starting a stall off heading which was ripped through by the clod. Only one prop set. Seam 22 inches thick. Pillar and stall.

Fall of roof clift (7 feet x 4 feet x from 5 inches to 12 inches thick) between face and a pair of flats, 4 foot back on top and 2.5 foot at bottom in front of roadway. Two-foot nine seam. Long wall.
THOMAS John - 1891 - 13/02/1891 – Age 23 – Dataler. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased having been at work all night came to the shaft bottom to ascend and is said to have passed immediately under the cages whilst in motion, to get on the other side of the pit bottom, instead of using the passage at the side of the pit. This passage was both narrow and unprotected, and it is possible that he might have slipped off it and been caught by the descending cage. 7 am.

THOMAS John - 1894 - 09/06/1894 – Age 39 – Collier. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face. He was taking down a slip of coal, which in falling struck out a post causing a stone 20 inches x 10 inches x 9 inches thick to fall on him. He knew the stone was dangerous and intended pulling it down after filling the tram. Four feet seam. 6 foot 6 inches thick.

He was stooping down to pick up a steel wedge when a piece of clod (overlying coal 2 feet x 8 inches x 4 inches thick) fell cutting him on the head. Erysipelas set in from which he died on June 3rd. Six feet seam.

Fall of roof at face from between two parallel and visible slants, 22 inches apart, inside of a row of props 8 to 4 foot from face. He was making a place for a prop under this roof when it fell. Four feet seam; roof fireclay and cliff very slanty.

He was working at the coal face when he freed a slip, running parallel with the face, causing a stone to fall. They were forming a new road up the longwall face and as the roof appeared strong they had only propped it at the time of the accident on the goaf side.

Apparently he had been riding on the gun when taking two trams of rubbish into the workings and in some manner the pin fastening the gun to the tram fell out liberating the horse and causing Thomas to fall in front of the trams which passed over and fatally crushed him.

One fuse took fire sooner than they expected and they had to go away at once, leaving as they thought the second fuse unignited, on returning to set fire to the second hole, it went off as the fuse had taken fire originally, without their being aware of it. Thomas was very badly cut on the right hand and Parry slightly cut and bruised. 2 injured. 7 week off.

It was part of a bridge and untimbered.

THOMAS Richard M. - 1891 - 21/07/1891 – Age 49 – Collier. Whitworth Drift, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. He turned an empty train on its side, in order to allow a full one to pass. One of his fingers was in some way crushed and he thought little of it beyond that it prevented his working. Blood poisoning, however supervened, and he died on the 5th August.

THOMAS Samuel - 1890 - 21/04/1890 – Age 21 – Shaftsman. South Wheal Frances (metalliferous), South Wheal Frances Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Deceased was performing the duty of watchman with his father. About 3.40 a.m. they went underground to see that things were right. Deceased was in front and when they had readied the 130-fathom level the young man fell on to the 140, dashing up against a pump. The evidence at the inquest showed that the ladder was quite firm and, although steep was not vertical. It was supposed deceased must have slipped his hands causing him to fall.

THOMAS Solomon - 1897 - 05/08/1897 – Age 25 – Haulier. Darran, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Head crushed between two trams which he was coupling. He thought the injury very slight and went home, almost without help but died a few hours after getting there.
THOMAS Stephen Henry - 1892 - 18/06/1892 – Age 25 – Pumpman. Mill Close (metalliferous), Wass and Son, Darley Dale, Derbyshire. Went down to attend to the pumps and by some means fell from the ladder onto the landing.
THOMAS Thomas - 1890 - 03/10/1890 – Age 16 – Engineman. Dinas Main, Dinas Main Colliery Co., Gilfach Goch, Glamorgan. While oiling the elevators of a coal crushing machine the platform on which he stood gave way and he fell on a pulley 10 feet below. It appears that the iron hanger supporting one end of the platform had been caught by the revolving spur wheel. Deceased’s instructions were to oil the machinery when not in motion.

THOMAS Thomas - 1891 - 30/08/1891 – Age 54 – Engineman. Werfa, James Evens and Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. He went into a boiler to clean it, telling the stoker to open a valve to let in cold water but neglecting to open the drain cock to draw off the hot water in the feed pipes, when the cold water was turned on it blew the hot water from the pipes into the boiler upon him, scalding him so badly that he died five days afterwards.

Deceased, and another man, were clearing away some dirt, which had been cut earlier in the day. The coal, about one to one and half a ton slipped off the corner of the airway (the pitch being steep), and squeezed him to death.

THOMAS William (injured) - 1891 - 05/05/1891 – Age 46 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). He was moving an iron bar, which held up the guy chain of a crane, when the chain somehow struck him and in his fall he dislocated two ribs and hurt his spine. Three and a half weeks off.
