The deceased were in the act of connecting a new boiler, which had just been put into position with two others that were in full working order. Other men were engaged at the same time in repairing the piston of the engine, Wm. Bawden, the working engineer being in charge of the work. Orders were given to let the boilers idle for this purpose and the fires should have been drawn but instead of this they were damped down at 6 a.m. after the night core was finished. Shortly before 2 p.m. the men engaged to speak to him concerning their work. A few minutes after he entered the house the tube of one of the boilers collapse, filling the house with steam and boiling water and severely scalding all three men. Northy died from his injuries the day after the accident, Bawden died within five days and Hooper within eight days. I made an examination of the boiler and found that the plates that had given way averaged five sixteenth inches in thickness. They seemed in a fair condition.
