YALE Osborne (injured) - 1890 - 09/05/1890 – Age 23 – Engineer. Votty & Bowydd (slate). He was trying a lubricator for the bearing of a new revolving slate dressing machine and inadvertently set the machine in motion while his right hand was resting upon the fixed knife. The thumb and forefinger were very badly cut. 3 months off.

YARDLEY Joseph - 1890 - 21/03/1890 – Age 19 – Labourer. Cradley, Joseph King and Co., Stourbridge, Worcestershire. Found drown in the pit reservoir.

YARNOLD John - 1893 - 08/02/1893 – Age 63 – Dataller. Norton Cannock, Norton Cannock Colliery Co., Bloxwich, Staffordshire. Fall of roof when improperly drawing timber. Died 14th Mar.

YATES Charles - 1896 - 13/11/1896 – Age 15 - Horse driver. Clay Cross No. 2, Clay Cross Coal and Iron Co., Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Whilst attempting to lift a loaded tram on the rails the horse drew the tram forward and crushed the deceased between the tram and a prop set to support the roof. When found he was dead.

YATES Charles Henry - 1897 - 25/06/1897 – Age 36 – Collier. Linnyshaw, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Crushed by six tubs which ran away in the self acting incline, through the coupling link breaking open at the weld, they started to run immediately the jigger was removed catch at top of jig six ran away from ten others.

YATES Daniel - 1891 - 22/08/1891 – Age 38 – Dataler. Collins Green, Collins Green Colliery Co. Ltd., Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was gang riding and appears to have either fallen or been knocked off the rope upon which he was riding and was crushed by the set of tubs he was bringing out. The roadway at this place is both low and narrow and not fit for the persons to gang ride. 9.30 am.

YATES David - 1893 - 15/05/1893 – Age 32 – Timberer. Biddulph Valley, Havelock, R Heath and Sons, Biddulph, Staffordshire. Fall of roof while repairing roadway in hard mine.

YATES David - 1896 - 23/05/1896 – Age 39 – Collier. Shackerley, William Ramsden and Sons, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place, from a slip which ought to have been seen, following the premature removal of a prop.

YATES Edward - 1896 - 26/03/1896 – Age 41 – Stallman. Woodside Shipley, EM Mundy, Shipley, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was proceeding up the stall and went through the goaf, to be out of the way of a tram, when the roof fell.

YATES Henry - 1899 - 08/03/1899 – Age 36 – Collier. Pendlebury Shuttle, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place, a large area with only one prop, one more might have prevented the accident.

YATES J. - 1891 - 13/06/1891 – Age 43 – Corporal. Oaks, C Cammell and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Injured by bar. Died 17th July.

YATES James (injured) - 1891 - 16/11/1891 – Age 55 – Miner. Sandrock, James Lord and Brother, Norden, Lancashire. Injured by roof stone from a slip. Inspection and inquiry.

YATES James - 1890 - 22/02/1890 – Age 53 – Miner. Newton No. 2 Trencherbone, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Clifton, Lancashire. Died March 6th from injuries by roof where he as pillaring.

YATES James - 1892 - 12/06/1892 – Age 52 – Collier. Apedale Watermills, Midland Coal Coke and Iron Co. Ltd., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Leg crushed in brake wheel of jig; gangrene supervened. Died 5th July.

YATES James - 1899 - 18/02/1899 – Age 8 – Child. Adderley Park Clay Quarry, Adderley Park Brick Co., Warwick. He walked into a pool of water in the quarry and was drowned.

YATES John - 1895 - 18/06/1895 – Age 40 – Loader. Bullfield, Joseph Marsh and Sons, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp brought down by a fall from the side of Russell’s Hall fault. 2 killed.

YATES Thomas - 1891 - 04/08/1891 – Age 58 – Dayman. Aspen, Samuel Scowcroft and Sons Ltd., Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. Killed by roof from between slips where he was drawing props in pillaring. Inquest attended. Residing at 9, Grove Street, Oswaldtwistle. John Taylor, a Collier, said he was working next to the deceased when the rock fell. It was custom to move props when the Colliers were working, and it was the deceased’s job to remove them. Thomas Yates, son of the deceased, said his father was about 58 years of age. A verdict of "Accidentally killed" was returned by the jury.

YATES Thomas - 1895 - 18/12/1895 – Age 13 - Siding boy. South Moor, South Moor Coal Co. Ltd.,  Co.Durham. Head caught between two tubs while attending the haulage forks.

YATES W. - 1893 - 09/01/1893 – Age 25 – Trammer. Barrow, Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of stone.

YATES Wilbraham - 1893 - 20/05/1893 – Age 28 – Collier. Tonge, Jethro Scowcroft, Bolton, Lancashire. Fall of roof clod from breaks clearly to be seen before fall.

YATES William - 1892 - 08/12/1892 – Age 55 – Collier. Peelwood, Tyldesley Coal Co. Ltd., Shakerley, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place from slip. Ought either to have pulled it down or set more props. Died 15th January 1883.

YATES William - 1894 - 30/11/1894 – Age 38 – Collier. Alexandra, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A stone fell on the deceased, from between slips in the roof capping some props, which were at about 2 foot 6 inches apart. The fireman stated the props were set within two feet of the face when he examined the place an hour previously.

YATES Yates - 1897 - 15/12/1897 – Age 60 – Collier. Towneley, Brooks and Pickup, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place from a pronounced slip. Insufficiently propped.

YEARDLEY Henry - 1895 - 04/11/1895 – Age 14 – Miner. Barnsmuir, Barnsmuir Coal Co., Stirling. Fall of stone.

YENEM David - 1893 - 10/11/1893 – Age 32 – Shunter. Glyn, Bryndu Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Slipped off the buffer of a railway truck on which he was riding on the Colliery branch railway and received injuries from which he died, 18th Dec.

YEOMAN Thomas - 1897 - 05/08/1897 – Age 55 – Waggonwayman. Lumpsey (ironstone), Bell Bros., N. Yorkshire. Badly crushed about the thigh by set when working on the engine plane. He appears to have forgotten about the set as he was opposite a refuge hole. Died on the 7th.

YORK Frank - 1895 - 18/01/1895 – Age 35 – Brancher, Old Welton, Old Welton Colliery Co., Somerset. He appears to have lighted the squib instead of the slow match, thereby causing the immediate explosion of a shot, the stuff from which caught him in the breast. He only lived a few minutes.

YORK William - 1898 - 24/10/1898 – Age 61 – Miner. North Skelton Ironstone, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., N. Yorkshire. Died while at work in the mine from heart disease.

YORWERTH Thomas - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Haulier. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

YOULL William - 1895 - 05/03/1895 – Age 15 – Screener. Margaret, Earl of Durham, Co.Durham. He was crossing a driving belt, where he had no business, when he fell and was drawn up to the sheave and crushed.

YOUNG Alexander - 1894 - 19/03/1894 – Age 39 – Miner. Oakbank, Oakbank Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Fall of midstone.

YOUNG Andrew - 1890 - 24/03/1890 – Age 35 – Miner. Gilbertfield No. 2, Cambuslang Coal Co., Cambuslang. Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp.

YOUNG Charles - 1895 - 31/07/1895 – Age 51 – Roadsman. Glengyron No. 1, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. While disconnecting a pony’s tail chain from a hutch he fell and was run over by it.

YOUNG David (non-fatal) - 1890 - 10/06/1890 – Age 32 – Miner. Holmes, Holmes Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Explosion of firedamp. 7 injured, 27 days off.

YOUNG G.W. - 1893 - 17/09/1893 – Age 32 – Hewer. Rainton, Marquess of Londonderry, Fence Houses,  Co.Durham. Fall of roof while engaged getting coal.

YOUNG George (non-fatal) - 1893 - 05/12/1893 – Age 60 – Miner. Arniston, Arniston Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Fall of coal.

YOUNG George - 1897 - 05/02/1897 – Age 37 – Hewer. Wardley, J Bowes and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased and his marrow followed to the place after the fore shift had left and found it in a safe working condition. After working for some time they examined the roof and found it good. Shortly after a very heavy fall of stone came away without any warning from slips running parallel with the face and alongside the props.

YOUNG James (non-fatal) - 1892 - 03/11/1892 – Contractor. Woodhall No. 1, Barr and Higgins, Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Explosion of a shot, the fuse of which was lighted by another shot.

YOUNG James (non-fatal) - 1892 - 18/11/1892 – Age 56 – Collier. Swinhill, George Miller and Sons, Lanarkshire. Overwinding Still off.

YOUNG James (non-fatal) - 1893 - 07/02/1893 – Age 40 – Miner. Mauldslie, Waddell and Son, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

YOUNG James - 1897 - 15/01/1897 – Age 48 – Deputy. New Brancepeth, Cochrane and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Strained himself while lifting a coal tub and died from peritonitis on 21st inst.

YOUNG John (non-fatal) - 1890 - 01/07/1890 – Age 26 – Drawer. Balgonie, Charles B Balfour, Fife. Jammed by tub. 27 days off.

YOUNG John (non-fatal) - 1890 - 02/10/1890 – Age 35 – Miner. Pentland, Clippens Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Explosion of firedamp. 2 injured.

YOUNG John (non-fatal) - 1892 - 02/08/1892 – Age 46 – Roadsman. Mosside, Gavin Paul and Sons, Linlithgow. Fell against water pipe 4 days off.

YOUNG John (non-fatal) - 1892 - 14/09/1892 – Miner. Common No. 14, Eglinton Iron Co., Cumnock, Ayrshire. Hand crushed between two pieces of ironstone.

YOUNG John - 1891 - 18/11/1891 – Age 19 – Collier. Prince of Wales, Abercarn Coal Co. Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. Fall of coal and clod from the face while he was in a stooping position. His life was thrown away purely through neglect of spragging.

YOUNG John - 1897 - 07/12/1897 – Age 16 – Driver. Harton, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Inquest attended. It is stated that the boy was going inbye, and when about halfway between the landing and the flat the pony stumbled, and on getting up knocked a prop and plank out, the latter falling between him and the pony, which moved away and deceased was jammed between the tub and the plank.

YOUNG Robert (non-fatal) - 1891 - 15/04/1891 – Age 40 – Brusher. Leven, Fife Coal Co., Fife. Fall of roof.

YOUNG Robert (non-fatal) - 1891 - 22/12/1891 – Age 26 – Collier. Fauldhouse, William Dixon Ltd., Linlithgow. Fall of blaes. Still off.

YOUNG Robert - 1894 - 24/10/1894 – Age 36 – Hewer. Brownrigg, J Armstrong, Northumberland. Inspection made. Suffocated by stythe. The deceased, it would seem, had gone into the place where he met his death, either out of curiosity or to get something. He had been working there on the previous day with the owner of the mine but owing to the foul air he had been forbidden to go in by the owner.

YOUNG Robert - 1899 - 08/12/1899 – Age 17 - Small trimmer. Seghill, Joseph Laycock and Co., Northumberland. He was passing along the railway branch and was knocked down by a waggon moving slowly down. He was walking towards the waggon but had evidently been looking in another direction.

YOUNG Thomas - 1892 - 22/03/1892 – Age 27 – Miner. Seafield, Pumpherston Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Fall of shale and roof.

YOUNG Thomas - 1893 - 01/03/1893 – Age 56 – Collier. North’s Navigation No. 9, Norths Navigation Collieries Ltd., Maesteg, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (4.5 feet x 2 feet x 10 inches thick) at face while cutting at rib just inside a small fault. Victoria seam.

YOUNG W. - 1899 - 18/05/1899 – Age 27 – Labourer. Daldowie, Dunn Bros., Lanarkshire. When attempting to mount a loco., which was putting waggons into the siding, he fell and was run over.

YOUNG Walter (non-fatal) - 1893 - 06/11/1893 – Age 27 – Shunter. Muiredge, Bowman and Co., Fife. Fell before waggon.

YOUNG William - 1899 - 30/11/1899 – Age 15 – Chainman. Cambusnethen, Thomas Barrs Trustees, Lanarkshire. The surface hutch road passes under a road, by means of an archway, and deceased, while riding on the full rake seems to have been caught at the archway and dragged some distance.

YOUNGER John - 1892 - 26/04/1892 – Age 61 – Stoneman. Cramlington, Cramlington Coal Co., Cramlington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Whilst preparing a place for a baulk, in a rolley-way they were repairing, a stone fell from the side on to him. It is doubtful whether he had properly examined the place.
