INCIDENTS WITH NO NAMES

1890 - 03/11/1890. Ravenhead, St. Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. An explosion took place in the Bastians Mine which killed one man. He went into a place where some gas had been reported in the morning and passed some men who were working with safety lamps. He had a naked light and the gas exploded at his candle. The name of the deceased is not given and the Inspector went on to say that the accident would not have happened if the man had a safety lamp.

1893 - 07/05/1893 – Tramp. Caldercruix, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Lanark. Fell down pit.

1894 - 18/05/1894 – Age 25 – Hewer. Newbottle D, Earl of Durham, Fencehouses, Co. Durham. Fall of stone from a slip in the face of a broken jud.

1896 - 01/08/1896 – Boy. Tibshelf, Babbington Coal Co., Derby. A boy was drowned in the colliery reservoir.

1896 - 02/07/1896 – Tramp. Hartington, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Derby. This tramp lay down on the colliery dirt tip and was suffocated. The dirt bank was on fire and he appears to have gone there for warmth.

1896 - 12/09/1896 – Tramp. Crumpmeadow. He was scalded to death, with another, having gone into the boiler ash pit for shelter during the night not knowing the stoker had unplugged the boiler and caused this man's death, the other managing to escape. Not comprised under the Act.

1896 - 14/11/1896. Yeadon (quarry), W Flesher, Yorkshire. Fall of ground from place within his control.

1896 - 23/04/1896 – Age 11 – Girl. Coalbrookvale, Monmouth. When playing near one of the colliery reservoirs she fell in and was drowned. Not comprised under the Act.

? James - 1890 - 08/04/1890 – Joiner. Overton No.2, Merry and Cunningham, Dreghorn, Ayrshire. Fell from scaffold.

AARON Abednego - 1892 - 15/10/1892 – Age 13 - Door boy. South Wales Heyworth, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Abertillery, Monmouth. Crushed between side of roadway and a tram drawn by a horse. It was travelling with the haulier instead of being stationed at the door which he had to attend to. This is a very undesirable practice as the hauliers make the boys do a great deal of their own work. The coroners jury condemned the practice and the manager promised to have it stopped.

ABBOT Thomas (non-fatal) 1891 - 10/09/1891 – Age 25 – Miner. Broxburn, Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Fall of shale. 33 days off.

ABBOT William - 1893 - 12/10/1893 – Age 42 – Miner. Rosedale (metalliferous), Carlton Iron Co. Ltd., Rosedale, Yorkshire. Head cut and other injuries by a shot blowing through from an adjoining place. Died on the 14th.

ABBOTT Ernest - 1898 - 02/12/1898 – Age 36 – Engineer. Bentley Brick quarry, Bentley Brick Co., Stafford. Overcome by foul air in pit shaft used as a well.

ABBOTT William - 1898 - 20/06/1898 - Age 56 – Reddsman. Gauchalland No. 2, Gauchalland Coal Co., Ayr. Fall of roof at his working face through failing to secure it when ordered by the fireman.

ABEL John (injured) - 1894 - 05/01/1894 – Age 35 – Miner. Minera (metalliferous). He slipped while walking and put his foot into a small cistern which received water from the hot well of a pumping engine. Foot scalded. 3 weeks off.

ABEL John - 1898 - 30/06/1898 – Age 47 – Collier. Chapel House, Executors of late E Smith, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had a long sprag set against the clod between the top and bottom and when engaged getting the bottom coal the clod gave way capping the sprag, and crushing the deceased. At the inquiry it was recommended that short sprags be used to assist the longer ones.

ABEL Philip - 1896 - 27/02/1896 – Age 60 – Dataller. Barlborough, Staveley Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Derby. Deceased died suddenly in the mine whilst at work. The doctor certified his death to be due to "cardiac failure." No accident occurred and no inquest was held.

ABERCROMBY George (non-fatal) - 1892 - 22/03/1892 – Drawer. Dumbreck No. 2, William Baird and Co., Kilsyth, Ayr. While descending shaft his arm was caught between the cage and a bunton.

ABLE Thomas (injured) - 1894 - 06/07/1894 – Age 26 – Getter. Wirral, Wirral Colliery Co. Ltd., Neston, Cheshire. Injured by a shot of roburite exploding while he was trying to recover it after a misfire.

ABRAHAM Daniel - 1891 - 16/07/1891 – Age 64 – Overman. Llantwitt Red Ash, Llantwitt Red Ash Coal Co., Llantwit, Vardre, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp.

ABRAHAM Josiah (non-fatal) - 1893 - 19/09/1893 – Age 19 – Miner. Phoenix United (metalliferous), Phoenix United Mining Co., Liskeard, Cornwall. He was on a plank wheeling ore into a pass when it tipped up causing him to fall a distance of 4 fathoms.

ABRAMS Richard - 1895 - 15/03/1895 – Age 46 – Examiner. Malgo Vale, Briston Collieries Co. Ltd., Malgo Vale, Somerset. Abrahams fired a shot which ignited gas in cracks in the roof or coal dust in the roadway which had not been damped thus creating an extensive explosion. 2 killed.

ABSOLOM John - 1891 - 26/02/1891 – Age 57 – Collier. Lewis’ Merthyr Hafod, Lewis’ Merthyr Navigation Collieries Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (top coal 22ins. thick) 7ft. long from between two slips 2ft. 8ins. apart at bottom and 1ft. at top and between the face and three props in line about 2ft. 9ins. back. 4-ft. seam. Long wall.

ACKLEY Samuel (injured) - 1894 - 02/11/1894 – Age 54 - Hooker on. Shelton No.2, Rowhurst Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Hanley, Stafford. Crushed by tub owing to being moved without signal. Side injured.

ADAM William (non-fatal) - 1892 - 09/2/1892 – Age 60 – Collier. Balgonie, CB Balfour, Fife. Fall of coal. Still off.

ADAMS Edward - 1891 - 23/02/1891 – Age 47 – Collier. Whitfield Chatterley, Whitfield Collieries Co., Tunstall, Stafford. Fall of roof at face from a slip in Hard Mine while preparing to set timber.

ADAMS Evan - 1894 - 19/01/1894 – Age 13 - Collier’s boy. Waun Llwyd, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. Fall of roof at the face of his working place in the Big Vein. The stone which was 4.75 feet long 2.2 feet wide and 9 inches thick at one side and feather edge at the other was released from slips by a weight. There were it seems several props set across the face but they were not close enough to catch this stone. I hope closer timbering will result after this and that the officials will see to its being done. There were two qualified colliers working in the place with him.

ADAMS George - 1891 - 14/09/1891 – Age 52 – Stallman. Pinxton No. 6, Coke and Co., Alfreton, Derby. Fall of roof. The deceased appears to have delayed setting the timber necessary for supporting the roof. Died 18th September. 9.30 am.

ADAMS J. - 1892 - 23/08/1892 – Age 21 – Fireman. Grange, Newton Chambers, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Explosion of boiler.

ADAMS James (non-fatal) - 1891 - 23/02/1891 – Age 43 – Roadsman. Bent, Bent Colliery Co. Ltd., Lanark. Fall of stone. 156 days off.

ADAMS James - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 36 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m., after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

ADAMS James - 1893 - 20/09/1893 – Age 27 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mine Adventurers, Camborne, Cornwall. Owing to its large run of ground the stull in the back of the 412 fathom level carried away and caught these men under it, as well as entombed another for 36 hours when he was released. They and others were at the time engaged strengthening it. 8 killed.

ADAMS John (non-fatal) - 1890 - 11/02/1890 – Age 39 – Miner. Billyford, Deans and Moore, Haddington. Fall of coal at face. 35 days off.

ADAMS John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 08/04/1893 – Age 28 – Miner. Ross, Thomas Barr, Lanark. Fall off roof.

ADAMS Thomas - 1899 - 24/08/1899 – Age 23 – Stoneman. Seaton Delaval, EF Seaton Delaval Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Adams and two others were setting timber preparatory to ridding a fall of stone at the face of a gateway when some stone slid from the fall and caught deceased.

ADAMS Tom - 1894 - 09/10/1894 – Age 45 - Deputy Winder, No. 20 (metalliferous), Parkside Mining Co., Winder, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was going down on the cage alone having previously instructed the engineman to stop at the eye. This was reached safety and a few minutes later the signal to lower men on was received. He was found lying across the cage on its arrival at the bottom quite dead his neck being dislocated.

ADAMSON Robert (non-fatal) - 1893 - 23/01/1893 – Age 17 – Haulageman. Devon, Alloa Coal Co., Clackmannan. Crushed between tubs 73 days off.

ADAMSON Thomas (non-fatal) - 1890 - 16/08/1890 – Age 20 – Miner. Wemyss, RGE Wemyss, Fife. Fall of Myslen stone, 107 days off.

ADAMSON Thomas - 1893 - 12/09/1893 – Age 59 – Viewer. Alloa, Alloa Coal Co., Clackmannan. Fall of stone.

ADAMSON Thomas - 1895 - 11/12/1895 – Age 20 – Drawer. Long Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A portion of the tubs got off the rails, on a jig, and came unhooked and running down the brow crushed the deceased among some empty tubs. He succumbed to the injuries January 6th.

ADAMSON William (non-fatal) - 1892 - 16/09/1892 – Age 17 – Drawer. Lassodie, Thomas Spowart and Co. Ltd., Fife. Crushed by tub, 40 days off.

ADAMSON William - 1891 - 28/01/1891 – Age 15 – Collier. Balognie, CB Balfour, Fife. Fall of coal.

ADDICOAT William H. (non-fatal) - 1893 - 13/11/1893 – Age 15 – Miner. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mine Adventurers. St. Just. Cornwall, While engaged shovelling off into the ram hole of platt at 150 fathom level a small stone fell from the hanging wall and fractured his skull. It appears there was a stull about 18 feet up but I see no reason why the place should not have been kept in a safe condition.

ADDIS Alexander - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 27 – Roadman. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion 290 killed.

ADDISON William - 1899 - 06/01/1899 – Age 64 - Truck loader. Great Wyrley, Great Wyrley Colliery Co., Stafford. Crushed between railway truck and brick pillar which carried the picking belt.

ADDSHEAD W. - 1896 - 23/07/1896 – Age 44 – Collier. Manvers Main, Manvers Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

ADDY B. - 1891 - 16/04/1891 – Age 39 – Collier. Carlton Main, Yor and Derby Coal and Iron Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of coal. Died 5th May.

ADLAM T. - 1890 - 21/04/1890 – Age 16 - Asst. hanger on. Treeton, Rothervale Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Injured by tub.

ADRIAN James (non-fatal) - 1892 - 20/12/1892 – Miner. Blackhill, Summerlee and Mossend Iron and Steel Co., Maryhill, Lanark. Explosion of firedamp.

ADRIDGE Benjamin - 1892 - 11/04/1892 – Age 34 – Engine-plane man. Bedworth Charity, Bedworth Coal and Iron Co., Bedworth, Warwick. Whilst at work in the engine plane a full tub became detached from the rope and running down and killed him. The accident was probably due to the handle of the clip catching something and thereby releasing the grip of the rope.

ADSHEAD Charles - 1890 - 02/05/1890 – Age 24 – Miner. Nook, Rowley Broad Oak Colliery Co., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Adshead smothered and Wolstenholme buried for 21 hours by gas and soft coal and black dirt being forced out of solid ground at the face of a narrow working being driven full dip. 1 killed 1 injured.

ADSHEAD Francis - 1894 - 06/09/1894 – Age 31 - Prop drawer. Duxbury Park, Duxbury Park Colliery Co., Chorley, Lancashire. Fall of roof in roadway whilst loosening a prop from slips all round which had not been seen.

AGAR Amos - 1896 - 22/09/1896 – Age 47 – Foreman. Loftus, Ironstone Pease and Partners Ltd., N. Yorkshire. Jumped on to a set between the buffers after signalling for it to start and fell off, two tubs passed over and killed him.

AGAR Edward (injured) - 1894 - 06/06/1894 – Age 32 – Miner. High Carr, Reps. of late JH Williamson, Newcastle, Stafford. Fall of ironstone from working face in Red Mine. Broken arm.

AGGNALL A. - 1893 - 21/04/1893 – Age 31 – Collier. Cortonwood, Cortonwood Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of coal, died 26th.

AGNEW Hathorn (non-fatal) - 1892 - 13/10/1892 – Miner. Lanemark No. 2, Lanemark Coal Co., New Cumnock, Ayrshire. While riding on a dook brae he got crushed against the roof.

AILES Job (injured) - 1891 - 16/06/1891 – Age 28 – Drawer. Bridgewater No. 3, Bridgewater Trustees, Worsley, Lancashire. Injured by his tub colliding with two tubs that another drawer was pushing out. Inspection and inquiry.

AINLEY B. - 1896 - 06/03/1896 – Age 33 – Collier. Morley Main, J and J Charlesworth, Yorkshire. Fall of side.

AINSCOUGH James Balney - 1897 - 18/02/1897 – Age 14 – Driver. Silksworth, Marquis of Londonderry, Co. Durham. He was driving a set of three full tubs when the first two got off the way and his head was crushed between the first tub and a prop.

AINSCOUGH Thomas - 1891 - 20/10/1891 – Age 32 – Collier. Norley, Norley Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was getting into the cage with three other men when the engineman suddenly lowered the cage and crushed him to death. The engineman was acting on a signal from the bottom and was not aware that men were about to descend as the banksman had omitted to warn him of this. The banksman's forgetfulness was the cause of the accident. 8.0 pm.

AINSCOUGH William - 1890 - 24/12/1890 – Age 18 – Drawer. Chequerbent Yard, Hulton Colliery Co., Over Hulton, Lancashire. Killed by roof falling in his drawing road.

AINSCOW Thomas - 1894 - 28/03/1894 – Age 49 – Collier. Wigan Junction, Wigan Junction Colliery Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. When leaving his work was racing with other man down a jig and struck his head against a step of rock in the roof and fell to the ground having his tea can in the same hand as his lamp he could not probably have seen the roof lower at that point. He succumbed to the injuries received on the following day.

AINSWORTH Edward - 1899 - 12/01/1899 – Age 30 – Miner. Roanhead Iron Ore, Kennedy Bros., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. About 20 feet of an ordinary timber drift suddenly collapsed burying the two men. Ainsworth was rescued after being entombed for 33 hours, apparently little worse, but he succumbed to shock on the 15th Jan. The place was well wooded and apparently secure. The right side consisted of solid ore the ore on the other side having been worked out although there was scarcely any open ground remaining. The roof was simply a mass of old wood and debris left from working previous heights and it is very unusual for sudden fall to occur in ground of this character. 2 killed.

AINSWORTH T. - 1890 - 07/11/1890 – Age 42 – Undermanager. Rotherham Main, J Brown and Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Struck on head. Died 15th Nov.

AINSWORTH William - 1890 - 31/03/1890 – Age 47 – Stallman. Clay Cross No 7, Clay Cross Iron and Coal Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. The stone fell away from a pot hole which appeared to be unknown to the deceased.

AINSWORTH William - 1898 - 02/09/1898 – Age 18 – Drawer. Crawford No. 1, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was pushing his empty tub along the drawing road at a point where the bars were six feet apart when a stone fell upon him two feet in width, from between two breaks crossing the airway. He expired half-an-hour after the accident.

AIRD Gilbert - 1897 - 24/11/1897 – Age 13 - Waggon trimmer. Portland Nos. 6 & 7, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Crushed between top of waggon and screen.

AIRD Matthew (non-fatal) - 1890 - 11/11/1890 – Age 16 - Oncost boy. Fence, Nithshill and Lesmahagow Coal Co., Lanarkshire. Explosion of gunpowder.

AIREY Joseph - 1897 - 29/04/1897 – Age 45 – Labourer. Applethwaite (quarry), GH Pattinson, Westmoreland. He was startled by a fall of stone, jumped off a ledge on which he was standing, a distance of eight feet, broke his ankle. Blood poison set in and he died on May 9th.

AITCHENSON James (non-fatal) - 1893 – 13/09/1893 – Age 37 – Miner. Woodmuir, Woodmuir Colliery Co., Edinburgh. Fall of roof. 22 days off.

AITCHINSON James - 1897 – 06/05/1897 – Age 56 – Hewer. Outfields, Outfields Colliery Co., Cumberland. Inquest attended. The deceased and marrow were working in a place 12 feet wide with a loose end and curved in about 3 feet and although warned by an official, a short time before the accident, had only one sprag set instead of several short when the coal fell over and caught him.

AITCHISON Colin (non-fatal) - 1892 – 28/11/1892 – Age 60 – Collier. Brewsterwells, George Laing, Fife. Fall of coal. 51 days off.

AITCHISON Robert - 1893 – 12/11/1893 – Age 43 – Master shifter. Seaton Burn, John Bowes and Partners Ltd., Seaton Burn, Northumberland. Inquest attended. He had been examining the workings of the mine, and was found dead on the rolley way. There were marks on deceased's ear and neck as if he had fallen over something.

AITCHMAN James (non-fatal) - 1894 – 14/06/1894 – Age 31 – Runner. Motherwell, John Watson Ltd., Lanark. Crushed by tub 70 days off.

AITKEN Allan (non-fatal) - 1894 - 15/05/1894 – Age 45 - Pony driver. Wishaw, Glasgow Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Lanark. Struck by tub, 145 days off.

AITKEN Charles (non-fatal) - 1891 - 03/12/1891 – Age 40 – Collier. Tarent, James Waldie and Sons, Haddington. Fall of fireclay. Still off.

AITKEN Edward (non-fatal) - 1890 - 13/08/1890 – Age 35 – Miner. Darngavil, Darngavil Coal Co. Ltd., Lanark. Explosion of firedamp. 21 days off.

AITKEN Robert - 1895 – 04/10/1895 – Age 44 – Miner. Dalmeny (shale), Dalmeny Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Fall of stone.

AITKEN William - 1895 - 10/05/1895 – Age 40 – Miner. Balbardie, Henry Walker and Cameron, Linlithgow. Fall of stone. 2 killed.

AITON Thomas (non-fatal) - 1891 - 28/10/1891 – Drawer. Trabboch, John Galloway and Co., Ayr, Ayrshire. Feet slipped while descending shaft and were crushed by cage.

AITTIS or ATTIS C.H. - 1894 - 30/08/1894 – Age 45 – Screenman. Newbottle, Earl of Durham, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. When proceeding from his work homewards he was seized with a fit of coughing resulting in a broken blood vessel from which he died shortly after.

AKEHURST Ernest F. - 1897 - 15/03/1897 – Age 18 - Labourer. Capenor Sand, James Hudson, Surrey. He was buried and suffocated by a quantity of loose sand which slipped down the sloping side of a sand pit as it was connected with underground workings for sand it was therefore legally a mine.

ALBORN George - 1896 - 12/05/1896 – Age 33 – Dataller. Langwith, Sheepbridge Coal and Iron Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was sawing a bar, to be fixed on a main road, when a fall of roof occurred and killed him.

ALCOCK Albert Ernest - 1896 - 19/08/1896 – Age 18 - Horse driver. Hall End, Morris and Shaw, Warwick. Deceased was crushed by a full tram of stone whilst riding on the shafts. Riding was against the rules of the mine.

ALCOCK John - 1895 - 11/07/1895 – Age 33 – Timberman. South Wales No. 1, Lancaster Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. While clearing a large fall on the main haulage road and making room for timbers a small stone fell from the roof and fractured his skull, death resulting in nine hours.

ALCOCK William Charles - 1891 - 15/04/1891 – Age 16 Driver Hall End, Morris and Shaw, Tamworth, Stafford. Deceased appears to have been riding on a full tub and either fell or was thrown off and fatally crushed. Pony working in sling gears had no power to stop the train. 1.10 pm.

ALDER John - 1894 - 04/12/1894 – Age 37 – Sinker. Abergorky, Burnyest Brown and Co. Ltd., Treorky, Glamorgan. Fatally injured by a small stone falling down the shaft. The stone either fell out of the bowk as it went up or off the doors when they were opened to allow the empty bowk to be lowered.

ALDERSLADE or ALLERDALE George - 1890 - 03/06/1890 – Age 39 – Hewer. Castle Eden, Castle Eden Coal Co. Ltd., Castle Eden, Co. Durham. Severe injuries to back by fall of coal and ramble while engaged kirving. He did not use sprags. Died in hospital on 2nd December.

ALDERSON George R. - 1890 - 10/02/1890 – Age 14 – Driver. Howden, North Beechburn Coal Co. Ltd., Crook, Co. Durham. Fell off limbers and was run over by a set of tubs.

ALDERSON Ralph - 1895 - 16/10/1895 – Age 14 – Driver. Lady Durham, Earl of Durham, Co. Durham. Fracture of skull while getting on limmers, while set was in motion, he fell and was crushed between tubs and side. Died 18th Oct.

ALDRED Edward (injured) - 1891 - 26/06/1891 – Age 46 – Drawer. St. George’s 7 Foot, Astley and Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Tyldesley, Lancashire. Injured by the rope in a balance brow the tub having escaped as he was scotching the wheel. Inspection and inquiry.

ALDRED Enoch - 1891 - 09/01/1891 – Age 59 – Dayman. Mosley Common No. 2, Bridgewater Trustees, Tyldesley, Lancashire. Killed by tubs on a gigbrow, close to a manhole, his lighted lamp and pick being in the manhole. Inspection and inquest attended.

ALDRED Isaiah - 1895 - 02/11/1895 – Age 50 – Fireman. Peelwood, Tyldesley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Had tapped water, by borehole, in abandoned workings three hours after the water broke through. It was found there were only 2 feet of coal between new place and the old place. 2 killed.

ALEXANDER James - 1898 - 15/09/1898 – Age 61 – Miner. Upleatham Ironstone, Pease and Partners Ltd., North Yorkshire. He was assisting the man he was working with to fill a tub with ironstone when a large piece of stone fell from the roof and killed him.

ALEXANDER Robert (non-fatal) - 1890 - 17/07/1890 – Pitheadman. Dechmont, Dechmont Colliery Co., Cambuslang, Lanark. His foot was crushed between two pipes.

ALFORD James - 1895 - 18/05/1895 – Age 48 – Miner. Princess Royal, Princess Royal Colliery Co. Ltd., Gloucester. A piece of clod fell on him from an unseen slip in the roof while putting coal down the face and caused injuries from which he died. The fall was due to a want of spragging and propping.

ALKER Jacob - 1891 - 12/05/1891 – Age 37 – Chargeman. Crawford, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Aspull, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was roofing down a face of widework and was building a pack when the roof fell upon him which also capped two props. The place was fairly timbered. 12.20 am.

ALKER James - 1893 - 26/01/1893 – Age 63 – Engineman. Duxbury Park, Duxbury Park Colliery Co. Ltd., Chorley, Lancashire. Getting out of cage at mouthing, missed his footing and fell 200 yards to the bottom of shaft.

ALKER John T. - 1898 - 24/06/1898 – Age 21 - Mining student. The Park, J and R Stone, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. In catching hold of one of the insulated handles of the switchboard for the electrical work in the underlooker's cabin at the pit bottom, the deceased placed his fingers beyond and received a fatal electrical shock. The installation, which was only partially completed by an electrical engineer worked at 110 H.P.. or a tension of 500 volts. At the inquiry it was recommended that the handles should be made longer and that the switchboard and connections should be cased off and that only an authorised person should use it.

ALLAN John - 1898 - 18/11/1898 – Age 19 – Putter. Eppleton, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Deceased was found quite dead between a tub and a prop with very slight signs of injury about him. A post mortem examination was made and one doctor gave it as his opinion that he died from failure of the heart's action, due to shock by an injury and another that death was due to natural causes. The jury at the inquest returned a verdict that he died from injuries received in the pit.

Deceased was working at the top coal when a fall of coal and roof stone suddenly occurred. The place was timbered up to within three feet of the slip of the coal and no signs of slips were seen previously.

ALLEN James - 1893 - 24/04/1893 – Age 59 – Carpenter. Brynn, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased had been doing some repairs in the pit and had come up to the surface and was in the act of getting some tools out of the cage when the engineman lowered the cage crushing the deceased. The banksman was required to do other work as well as attend to the signals and was not on the brow at the time of the accident, which showed great carelessness. The jury were of opinion that if the browman had been on duty, on the pit, the accident would not have occurred.

After preparing a shot, in some top stone, and drawing the timber out ready for firing the deceased carelessly went under the stone for some rails when the stone fell on him. 5.15 pm.

ALLISON J. - 1896 - 19/08/1896 – Age 45 – Shaftman. Garforth, Garforth Coal Co., Yorkshire. He and another were taking a trap door down the shaft on the top of the cage when he fell off to the bottom.

ALLISON John - 1890 - 13/06/1890 – Age 65 – Labourer. Halhill No. 1, William Baird and Co., Baillieston, Lanark. Caught by back balance of pumping engine while taking out a prop which had fallen into the pit beneath it.

ALLISON John - 1898 - 21/10/1898 – Surfaceman. Callendar, Callendar Coal Co., Stirling. Deceased and three other surfacemen were riding on a bogie over which they had control. The other men got off but deceased remained on until it ran into a waggon.

ALLSOPS John - 1893 - 05/10/1893 – Age 17 - Asst. haulier. Ferndale No. 5, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Ferndale, Glamorgan. Supposed to have fallen in running forward to open a door and horse and tram ran over him. The haulier said he was behind the two trams.

ALLWOOD Alfred - 1890 - 26/04/1890 – Age 29 – Shunter. Apedale, Sladder Hill Midland Coal Coke and Iron Co. Ltd., Newcastle, Stafford. Fell off truck while taking it to screens and was run over.

ALMOND Joseph - 1899 - 16/06/1899 – Age 33 – Drawer. Moss No. 6, Pearson & Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. There had been a weight across the longwall face with part of the roof coal fallen. They were taking a ribbing on the top side and were getting loose coal of the face without sufficient timbering when a fall of roof coal 6 feet in length fell upon the deceased. At the inquiry systematic timbering was recommended. The jurors believed the deceased met his death due to improper timbering.

ALSTON William - 1899 - 20/10/1899 – Age 47 – Dataller. Moorfields, Altham Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place after taking out five props, although a pronounced break was seen in the roof, he placed himself under the unsecured area, shovelling stones from a shot.

ALTHAM John (injured) - 1891 - 07/11/1891 – Age 60 - Waggon mover. Within’s Lane, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Radcliffe, Lancashire. Ribs broken, he fell in stepping down a slope to the railway siding. Inspection and inquiry.

ALTON Herbert - 1897 - 05/06/1897 – Age 38 – Stallman. Teversal, Staunton Iron Works Co., Nottingham. Fall of coal. Deceased was holing and a sudden falling of the coal, out the timber supports, fatally crushed the deceased.

ALTON Moses - 1892 - 26/06/1892 – Age 17 - Horse driver. Bretell Lane, Trotter Haines and Corbett, Brierley Hill, Stafford. Fall of roof in fireclay stall.

ALVIS George - 1894 - 24/04/1894 – Age 56 – Foreman. Varteg Hill, John Vipond and Co. Ltd., Varteg, Monmouth. Having coupled three trucks together, on the pit timber siding, for a horse to pull out he stood on a pile of timber at the side and in reaching forward to raise a brake he fell in front of the wheels which passing over him caused immediate death. He had been foreman for six or seven years.

AMBERY W. - 1890 - 25/04/1890 – Age 27 – Trammer. Darfield Main, Darfield Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

AMBLER Robert - 1897 - 20/07/1897 – Age 56 – Collier. Moss No. 4, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. While assisting his drawer to turn a tub of coal in his gateway he slipped and fell, injuring his back. He succumbed to the injuries received on 29 November 1897.

AMOS Thomas - 1893 - 23/08/1893 – Age 39 – Collier. Kingswood Speedwell, Kingswood & Parkfield Collieries Co. Ltd., Bristol, Gloucester. Having fired a shot he was clearing the coal to the place for loading into trams when a quantity of small and soft coal (20 and 30 cwt) fell from the face extinguishing his light and covering him up. His brother who worked with him obtained assistance without delay and he was soon got from under the coal but his life was extinct. The ventilation was totally inadequate and it is quite probable that had it been otherwise the lights would not all have been extinguished and that with earlier help and fresh air he might have revived.

ANDERS Henry - 1892 - 18/05/1892 – Age 53 – Daywageman. Ashtons Green, Bromilow Foster and Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. When clearing a fall on a roadway a stone fell on the deceased, there should have been a bar set to secure the roof.

ANDERSON Alexander (non-fatal) - 1890 - 15/04/1890 – Surveyor. Newton No. 1, James Dunlop and Co., Newton, Lanark. Explosion of firedamp. 2 injured.

ANDERSON David - 1897 - 04/09/1897 – Age 22 – Drawer. Devon, Alloa Coal Co., Clackmannan. Deceased had gone inbye to a working place for a tub and while the miners were completing the loading of it he began to shear the coal. A large block came away suddenly from a foul cleavage plane and rolled over him fracturing his pelvis. The miner had sounded the coal immediately before and believed it to be safe.

ANDERSON Frederick - 1890 - 24/10/1890 – Age 26 – Steeplejack. Common No. 11, Eglinton Iron Co., Cumnock, Ayrshire. Fell from a chimney which he was repairing.

ANDERSON George (non-fatal) - 1892 - 21/04/1892 – Age 18 – Collier. Gartness, Gartness Coal Co., Lanark. Struck by runaway tub 131 days off.
