ANDERSON John - 1898 - 01/08/1898 – Age 34 – Dataller. Creswell, Bolsover Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Deceased went to lower three empty tubs, part of a train of 16, down an inclined roadway on the pit bank. After taking a locker out of the front wheel the whole train came forward and deceased went in front to try and stop them. The front tub got off the rail and crushed deceased against the headgears. He died on the 6th August.

Standing behind full set landing, waiting for empty set, in coming in the set came full way and knocked full tubs away and they caught and killed him. The points were found to be fastened for full way of landing.

Driving recklessly down an inclined road without sprags in the wheels the limmers caught against a prop knocking it out and the roof fell on the deceased.

ANDERTON Daniel - 1896 - 22/08/1896 – Age 44 - Quarry owner. Horrocksford Stone (quarry), D and T Anderson, Lancashire. Fell from top of quarry to the bottom, 54 feet, whilst examining the baring. He slipped from path.
ANDERTON John - 1896 - 18/06/1896 – Age 50 – Joiner. Bamfurlong Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was using the saw bench, sawing a piece of timber; and after running the circular saw through it he turned round to shut off the steam. The timber overhanging the saw-bench was falling when it was caught by the saw which hurled it forward striking the deceased and fracturing his skull. He expired on the 2Oth. It is difficult to shield a saw of this kind but an attempt will be made.

ANDREW Samuel (non-fatal) - 1892 - 14/07/1892 – Age 48 – Stoper. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. While ascending the shaft by the main engine, the rod broke, and in falling with it about 12 feet his hand was injured.

ANDREW William (injured) - 1890 - 18/10/1890 – Age 22 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. Andrew was engaged in putting in a piece of timber in the bottom of the 234 fathom level and was standing in a ladder preparing the piece when he slipped and fell down the ladder-way, a distance of about 10 fathoms sustaining internal injuries and bruises.

ANDREWS Benjamin (non-fatal) - 1891 - 13/04/1891 – Age 40 – Miner. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mining Co., St. Just, Cornwall. While engaged sinking the skip shaft, under the 180-fathom level, a stone fell from a piece of ground three fathoms above, which was serving the purpose of a penthouse, and struck him on the head.
ANDREWS Henry - 1891 - 29/12/1891 – Age 30 - Loco. Guard. Pollington, Oakes and Co., Langley Mill. The deceased appears to have gone between the engine and a waggon, to couple it, and was fatally crushed between the buffers. His coupling pole was found by the side of the waggon. The accident, nearly one mile from the mine, and on the Midland Railway Company's sidings.
ANDREWS Henry - 1898 - 10/05/1898 – Age 64 – Labourer. Butterknowle, Butterknowle Colliery Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. When kirving clay on the surface, to mix with other daub, for coke ovens and brick making a piece fell over on him and killed him.
ANDREWS Joseph - 1890 - 18/12/1890 – Age 60 – Collier. Tyla Coch, Marquis of Bute, Treorky, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (5ft. x 3ft. x 18ins. thick) from a break close to face. Two props discharged by fall, Nine Feet seam Long wall.
ANDREWS Joshua - 1899 - 17/07/1899 – Age 31 – Hewer. Boldon, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased and his marrow were removing a small pillar of coal and while the former was in the act of setting a prop a stone fell from between two slips. The place had just been examined by the deputy and was considered safe and well timbered.

The breakage of the winding engine pinion wheel shafts in the bearing allowed the gig in which the men were ascending to run back from the 245 to the 375 fathom level. The brake rendered more or less by a portion of the wheel falling among the levers. 4 injured.
ANGROVE Richard (non-fatal) - 1893 - 23/11/1893 – Age 38 – Miner. Wheal Grenville (metalliferous), Wheal Grenville Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. While engaged at Fortescues shaft he slipped and fell 3 or 4 feet cutting his head slightly.

ANGROVER Charles (non-fatal) - 1891 - 29/04/1891 – Age 22 – Miner. West Wheal Seton (metalliferous), West Wheal Seton, Camborne, Cornwall. His collar-bone was broken by a chain which struck him while working in the shaft.
ANGROVER Thomas William (injured) - 1890 - 10/09/1890 – Age 22 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Had his jaw broken by a fall from a ladder in which he was standing for the purpose of removing some loose ground preparatory to timbering it. A large piece of ground fell on the lower part of the ladder cutting it in two and thus caused the accident.

ANGUS George - 1899 - 17/05/1899 – Age 14 – Driver. Derwent, Hunter Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Died today of tetanus from injuries received about a fortnight ago to one of his fingers. The nature and date of the accident is uncertain.
ANKERS George - 1894 - 05/11/1894 – Age 26 – Loader. Bunkers Hill, W Rigby and Co., Audley, Stafford. Crushed by tub after lifting it on to rails in thirling not having secured chain before doing so.
ANNEAR David (non-fatal) - 1891 - 13/02/1891 – Age 21 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. While unraming a "missed shot" exploded and injured his eyes. The hole having burnt itself out in the previous core the man wished to recharge it. It is supposed that a small quantity of nitro-glycerine remained in the bottom of the hole and exploded on the tool being introduced. It being contrary to general rule to unram a hole which has missed fire he was required to make a public apology in lieu of appearing before the justices.
ANNIBAL William - 1892 - 25/04/1892 – Age 70 – Banksman. Bestwood, Bestwood Iron and Coal Co., Bestwood, Nottingham. Whilst pushing a tub into the slackhoist the engineman started the engine. The deceased's finger was crushed and erysipelas setting in causing his death on the 19th May.
ANTHONY Edward - 1892 - 24/08/1892 – Age 35 – Labourer. Ynyscedwyn, Ynyscedwyn Colliery Co., Swansea Valley, Brecon. While descending main slant the carriages ran wild. 6 killed.
ANTHONY Francis - 1896 - 07/12/1896 – Age 56 – Quarryman. Wakeham Stone (quarry), BC White, Dorset. A stone (of overburden) which was being lifted and removed by means of a crane slipped out of the sling chain in consequence of a jerk caused by the chain riding on the barrel. The stone fell into the quarry below and rolled against him causing death in a few hours.
ANTHONY Frederick - 1890 - 26/06/1890 – Age 41 – Stallman. Clay Cross No. 7, Clay Cross Iron and Coal Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of coals whilst holing. The coals broke over the sprags owing to a slip in the coal.
ANTHONY John - 1891 - 19/02/1891 – Age 28 – Collier. Rhos, Rhos Colliery Co., Ammanford, Carmarthen. Fall of roof (rippings) 9ft. x 3ft. x 15ins. thick which deceased and his partner had tried to take down the previous day failing to do so they put one prop under the stone and in taking down a slip of coal this prop was knocked out. Stanllyd vein 4ft. thick. Long wall.
ANTHONY Samuel - 1892 - 31/03/1892 – Age 19 – Loader. Glapwell, Sheepbridge Iron and Coal Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Seized by a fit while waiting on the pit bank to descend and died after remaining unconscious for about an hour and a half. No accident or injury to the deceased and no inquest held.
ANTON Michael - 1894 - 20/03/1894 – Age 50 – Ganger. Duxbury Park, Duxbury Park Colliery Co. Ltd., Chorley, Lancashire. Crushed by tub coupling between 1st and 2nd tub of a train of eleven others became detached. Deceased was walking before the train, it is supposed the first tub bounded forward on becoming uncoupled and struck him. It would be easy to understand had he been riding but he was never known to ride. He was found between the rails and about 8 feet in front of the tub.
APLEN Fred - 1893 - 08/09/1893 – Age 39 – Collier. Tylors, A Tylor and Co. Ltd., Tylorstown, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on main road while he was passing into work. It was a double parting which was not timbered. Six feet seam.
APPLETON John - 1893 - 20/03/1893 – Age 29 – Hewer. Dorothea, Earl of Durham, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. While hewing in a jud he exposed a slip, and a fall of stone took place killing him.
APPLEYARD William (rescued) - 1896 - 30/04/1896. Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.
ARAM James - 1892 - 15/12/1892 – Age 32 – Onsetter. Bulwell, Babbington Coal Co., Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Piece of coal falling down the shaft struck the deceased as he was crossing the pit bottom. There was a road round the shaft and deceased was crossing the bottom, contrary to the rules of the mine. Died 19th December.
ARAM Joseph - 1890 - 06/04/1890 – Age 16 – Driver. Manners, Manners Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Crushed by the cage at the pit bottom whilst assisting the onsetter to unload tubs.
ARCHER Joseph - 1895 - 29/04/1895 – Age 15 – Horsedriver. Streetley, Shire Oaks Colliery Co. Ltd., Nottingham. Fall of roof. Some men were repairing the roadway and one of them injured by a fall of roof. Deceased went to his assistance when a large quantity of roof fell and killed him.
ARCHER William - 1890 - 06/06/1890 – Age 38 – Collier. Bamfurlong Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was holing when the coal came over onto him. It was uncertain whether he had a sufficient number of sprags set or not.

ARDEN Wright - 1899 - 06/10/1899 – Age 29 – Collier. Wharton Hall, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fall of roof, in level drawing road, while repairing from slip which ought to have been seen, he intended setting a prop, but deferred to long.
ARDINE William - 1898 - 07/08/1898 – Age 59 – Overman. Viewpark, R Addie and Sons Collieries Ltd., Lanark. While working on a hanging scaffold, putting in pipes, he fell down the shaft.
ARGYLE John William - 1893 – 26/10/1893 – Age 21 – Onsetter. Manners, Manners Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Whilst attempting to move the cage catches he lost his balance and fell head first into the sump. Died same day.

ARMOUR William Jnr. - 1899 - 10/10/1899 – Age 14 – Miner. Hamilton Place No. 1, Bent Colliery Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. The fireman lit the fuse of a shot of compressed gunpowder. No sooner was the fuse lit than it ignited firedamp and the deceased and another miner were all injured by the explosion. The shot afterwards went off.
ARMSBY Henry - 1899 - 30/10/1899 – Age 22 – Fitter. Lumpsey Ironstone, Bell Bros. Ltd., N. Yorkshire. The shot-firer had fired a shot in a place, which was just away, and returned with the fillers who commenced to remove some stone so that two props might be put up, which had been knocked out by the shot, when the timber above them suddenly gave way and this man was killed instantly.

ARMSTRONG Francis - 1896 - 12/06/1896 – Age 60 – Repairer. Donnington, Granville Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Fall from side of main drawing road while engaged in widening the road. Another man working with him was also injured. They had loosened the side for 6 or 7 yards, under a strong band of rock, and were standing in front of it trying to pull it down when the whole fell on them.
ARMSTRONG Frank - 1897 - 05/08/1897 – Age 25 – Driver. Glenboig, Glenboig Union Fireclay Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was proceeding down the horse dook leading his horse, when the roof, which was a brick arch, gave way and fell on him.
ARMSTRONG George - 1897 - 14/09/1897 – Age 36 - Hooker on. Garswood Hall, Garswood Hall Collieries Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A piece of coal fell down the shaft on his head while engaged taking the tubs out of the cage at pit bottom. The shaft was well provided with shields overhead but there was a space of nine inches unprotected, this space was needed for clearance.

ARMSTRONG John - 1896 - 22/04/1896 – Age 48 – Hewer. Axwell Park, Hannington Coal Co., Co. Durham. Inspection made. A large fall of stone, about 5 inches thick in the centre and thinning out to a feather edge all round, fell out from over the coal face and knocking out two props.
ARMSTRONG John - 1898 - 10/01/1898 – Age 52 – Hewer. Seaham, Marquis of Londonderry, Co. Durham. When going down the shaft he suddenly fell forward against another man and died before the cage reached the bottom of the shaft. Death was due to heart failure.

ARMSTRONG Richard - 1899 - 23/02/1899 – Age 30 – Miner. Charlestown (metalliferous), Charlestown Lime Co., Fife. Deceased was working in a place 30 feet in height when a stone supposed to have been loosened by the concussion from a shot fired in an adjoining place fell on him, fracturing his skull.

ARMSTRONG Thomas . jnr. - 1899 - 14/07/1899 – Age 16 - Landing boy. Handen Hold, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. An empty set was running to an engine landing when some of the tubs left the rails and ran into a full set behind him, which the deceased was standing near. He should have been in the refuge hole which was close at hand.

ARMSTRONG Tom - 1896 - 24/11/1896 – Age 26 – Stoneman. Auckland Park, Blocklow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. While engaged with some others, ridding, a fall of stone on the main road a piece of stone fell from the roof and killed him.
ARMSTRONG William - 1898 - 26/05/1898 – Age 22 – Hewer. Dinnington, John Bowes and Partners Ltd., Dinnington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was filling a tub of coal at a longwall face when a stone fell, without any warning, from between two slips. The deputy had examined the place a short time previous although aware of one slip he did not consider it necessary to set any timber.

ARNOLD Harry - 1899 - 08/06/1899 – Age 13 - Screenboy. Bentinck, New Hucknall Colliery Co., Nottingham. Deceased was throwing slack on to a travelling picking belt when the shovel he was using caught in the plates of the belt and dragged deceased on to the coal shoot where he was fatally crushed. He died same day.

While assisting in lowering a piece of timber in the shaft he was struck on the head by the handle of the tackle which was jerked out of his hand, timber caught on something and suddenly clearing itself jerked the rope.

ARUNDEL J. - 1899 - 19/11/1899 – Age 54 – Manager. West Silkstone, Thomas Smith, Yorkshire. Was examining pumping shaft on Sunday and engineman, instead of drawing him up ran him down rapidly to bottom of the shaft by mistake.
ASH Michael - 1890 - 12/12/1890 – Age 50 – Miner. Jacktrees (metalliferous), Carron Iron Co., Cleator, Cumberland. Fall of roof stone. This accident occurred in a very high working place and it had not been visited by a deputy or an official for 23 hours previous to the accident.
ASH Robert - 1893 - 25/05/1893 – Age 57 - Labourer. Celynen Newport, Abercarn Black Vein Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. Knocked down and fatally injured by a train which two timbermen were using on an inclined part of the North Engine Plane, they having failed to adequately sprag it.
ASH William - 1899 - 27/04/1899 – Age 48 – Collier. Ynyshir House Coal, Ynyshir Steam Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fatally injured while unlawfully riding in a tram containing two oil casks. Died 27th October.
ASHBURN George - 1892 - 28/11/1892 – Age 14 – Driver. South Tanfield, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., South Tanfield, Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Driving down a slight incline the pony stumbled and the limmers, catching a prop, it was knocked out and some of the roof fell on the lad.
ASHBURNER Levi - 1898 - 25/06/1898 – Age 69 – Miner. Croft iron ore, Lord Leconfield, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. A small quantity of soft ore fell from the roof, about 12 feet from the working face, and struck the deceased on the shoulder. He was an old and feeble man, or probably the accident would not have terminated fatally. He died on the 2nd July.
ASHBURY Thomas - 1895 - 07/01/1895 – Age 65 – Dataller. Netherseal, Netherseal Colliery Co. Ltd., Derby. Deceased was closely following a loaded tram up a steep incline when the chain broke. The tram ran back, the sprag failed to stop it and running off the rail it crushed deceased.

He, with others, was racing down a jig brow when the trams were started, he was caught and crushed at the entrance to a refuge place. Deceased was apparently aware that he was breaking the Rules. 3.30 pm.

ASHLEY Edward - 1898 - 12/02/1898 – Age 52 – Stallman. Shire Oaks No.2, Shire Oaks Colliery Co., Nottingham. Deceased fell forward and died suddenly while at work in the mine. An inquest was held and it was found that he died from cerebral haemorrhage not received any injury in the mine.

Deceased stood watching his loader withdraw a prop from the goaf by means of the ringer and chain. Directly the prop was loose the roof gave way and pushed out three props causing the roof to fall and strike deceased. He died the same day.
ASHMORE Joseph - 1898 - 15/03/1898 – Age 49 – Quarryman. Great Rocks Millers Dale Limestone quarry, Buxton Lime Firms Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was undercutting the face of the quarry when some of the overhanging rock fell over and fatally injured him. He died on the 18th.

ASHTON David John - 1893 - 20/12/1893 – Age 15 - Collier’s boy. Tillery Penybout, Powells Tillery Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Abertillery, Monmouth. Fall of roof. A bell-shaped stone fell from the roof, close to the face, striking him on the back of the head. The place seemed to have been fairly well timbered.

ASKEW William - 1897 – 01/09/1897 – Age 52 – Miner. Park iron ore, Barrow Haematite Steel Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A very simple accident. The drift was in soft ore, about 7 feet high by 3 feet wide, properly timbered and in good condition. He was working down some ore in the roof subsequent to blasting when a part of it, about the size of a man's head, fell and struck the end of his pick driving the shaft against his abdomen. He died on the 3rd Sept.

ASTBURY Thomas - 1894 – 14/06/1894 – Age 38 – Collier. Mount Pleasant, JB Gregory and Co., Buckley, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. They had been holing under the bottom coal and had set two sprags, having failed in their attempt to get the clod down which was over the coal, when a piece of the clod gave way striking the deceased against the back and causing such injuries that he died shortly afterwards.

By some means or other the deceased fell among the small coal in the washed coal hopper and was suffocated. The practice of standing up the coal inside the hopper has now been prohibited.

ATLINSON James - 1899 - 28/08/1899 – Age 15 – Driver. Blaydon Burn, Owners of Priestman Colliery. Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was driving a horse, attached to a set of full tubs, when the horse knocked out some timber causing a fall of roof. Another boy who was riding on the tub was injured.
ATSON Thomas - 1898 - 16/08/1898 – Age 23 – Hewer. Sacriston, Charlaw and Sacriston Collieries Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. After completing his work in the pit and having come to the surface, he attempted to get on to a set of full waggons for the purpose of riding on a private branch railway but slipped and the last waggon ran over and killed him. He was trespassing at the time.
ATSON William - 1892 - 26/01/1892 – Age 17 - Landing keeper. Washington, Washington Coal Co., Washington, Co. Durham. Inquiries made. He was running alongside a pony, which was drawing eight loaded tubs, when he tripped and fell in front of the tubs and received a compound fracture.
ATWELL Charles - 1898 - 10/05/1898 – Age 19- Weigh clerk. Lea Green, Sutton Heath & Lea Green Collieries Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A North Western engine driver shunted some wagons into the colliery sidings, at a great speed, without whistling to warn those about the screens, they ran against some wagons which deceased was passing between at the moment. He succumbed to the injuries received.
AUGWIN John T. - 1895 - 26/11/1895 – Age 14 - Miner’s boy. Levant (metalliferous), Levant Mine Adventurers, Cornwall. Crushed while ascending shaft, by the man engine, having only been a week at work in the mine. He lost his light and instead of waiting, as his father who was on the next step told him to do until he came up, he apparently tried to ascend further and missed his step.

AVANT John - 1898 - 21/09/1898 – Age 27 – Filler. Dolcoath, Tin Dolcoath Mine Ltd., Cornwall. Was engaged in a winze, dipping a water barrel, which while being drawn up became detached from the rope in consequence of the breakage of the Ubolt and falling down caused his death. The air winch was worked by a lad 16 years of age who as well as deceased was employed by a contractor. No supervision seems to have been exercised as to the condition of appliances by a competent person.

Fall of roof coal at the face, where he was at work alone, his butty not having come that morning. He alleged to have had a sprag against the coal when it fell and intended putting in another. The collier in the adjoining place assumed charge and responsibility for him. Although he had four or five years' experience he was much too young to be allow to work alone at coal getting.

AYERS Henry (injured) - 1890 - 14/07/1890 – Age 44 – Miner. Atlas (metalliferous), Atlas Tin Mining Co., Newton Abbot, Devon. A piece of ground fell from the roof of a stope in which Ayers was working and struck him breaking some of his ribs. The ground was secured by a prop, two or three days previously, but the hitch in the foot wall was not cut deep enough and consequently the prop gave way.

AYRE John Edward - 1892 - 27/01/1892 – Age 22 – Hewer. Throckley, Throckley Coal Co., Throckley, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Although the place was well timbered a stone suddenly fell from a pothole.
AYRE William - 1891 - 02/10/1891 – Age 41 – Miner. North Devon Clay (metalliferous), North Devon Clay Co., Torrington, Devon. He was engaged sinking a shaft, about 20 feet deep, when the bucket crushed him against the side, in consequence of the brake of the winch by which it was being lowered, slipping.
AYTACK Arthur - 1899 - 08/09/1899 – Age 22 – Shifter. Cambois, Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased and his marrow were ridding stones from a shot and building a pack at the face of a gateway. While Aytack was examining the roof, a stone fell from slips and a wet parting, and struck him on the back of the head and neck.
