JOICE John R. - 1893 - 20/09/1893 – Age 30 – Hewer. Bedlington, A Bedlington Coal Co. Ltd., Bedlington, Northumberland. Inquest attended. A man who was working with the deceased stated that the (deceased) was kirving in the coal when a stone fell from between a small fault and a slip on to him causing injuries from which he died on 28th October. He considered the place safe.

JOLE Charles (non-fatal) - 1894 - 31/03/1894 – Age 25 - Skip filler. Phoenix United (metalliferous), Phoenix United Mining Co., Linkinhorne, Cornwall. Leg crushed by skip.

JOLLY William - 1891 - 10/09/1891 – Age 30 – Collier. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A shot was fired on the top of a small rise step and the gas fired immediately the fuse was lighted. The fireman told the collier to light the fuse whilst he examined some 2 or 3 yards away having it is said, previously examined the face. There appears to have been some carelessness on the part of the shot lighter, he should have detected the presence of gas. Gas had been seen near this place a week or so previously. 2 killed. 11.0 am.

JONES Aaron (injured) - 1894 - 03/08/1894 – Age 28 – Miner. Minera (metalliferous). Explosion of remnants of a charge of Nobel's gelatine-dynamite, while his partner was boring a new hole with a percussive drill in the immediate vicinity of an old hole which had been fired the previous day and had duly broken the ground. Unexploded remnants of gelatine-dynamite were found after the accident. Face and eyes cut. 2 weeks off.

JONES Abraham - 1892 - 26/07/1892 – Age 33 – Ripper. Tynybedw, Gelli & Tynybedw Collieries Co., Pentre, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on main heading between a cog and prop 3.5 feet apart.

JONES Abraham - 1893 - 27/04/1893 – Age 18 – Engineman. Pemberton, J Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A spur wheel of an underground hauling engine broke and part fell on the steam pipe breaking it causing a rush of steam into the enginehouse. Deceased, who was driving the engine, was badly scalded. The engine room was provided with two exits and the wheel comparatively new. There was no apparent cause for it giving way.

JONES Abraham - 1894 - 17/05/1894 – Age 38 – Collier. Lady Windsor, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Ynysybwl, Glamorgan. Fall of side in stall road near face. Deceased and his partner had knocked out a prop to bring down some rippings which in falling brought down a fall of side, 15 foot long, 3 foot wide and 3 foot thick over the gob side where they had retreated to for safety. No. 2 or Six feet seam.

JONES Albert - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 14 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

JONES Albert - 1890 - 12/06/1890 – Age 14 - Door boy. Whiston, Wigan and Whiston Coal Co. Ltd., Prescot, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased had to mind two doors, 70 yards apart, and had to pass in front of the gang to get to the second door. While so doing he was knocked down and run over.

JONES Alfred - 1890 - 19/09/1890 – Age 17 – Haulier. Lewis Merthyr Coedcae, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Blocked between trams which he was bringing forward and others standing on siding.

JONES Alfred - 1895 - 17/06/1895 – Age 14 - Collier’s boy. Castle, Crawshay Bros. Cyfartha Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of face slip of coal, 10 foot long, as he was filling his coal box. Upper four feet seam.

JONES Alfred - 1898 - 03/10/1898 – Age 16 – Driver. Coppice, Coppice Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Crushed by tubs on main road.

JONES Amazia - 1893 - 11/04/1893 – Age 15 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an underground fire. 63 killed.

JONES Ben - 1893 - 13/11/1893 – Age 17 – Collier. Llantwit Merthyr, Llantwit Merthyr Colliery Co., Britton Ferry, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (a bell stone) at face. Roof propped on each side, Wenallt seam. Died on 17th November.

JONES Ben - 1896 - 28/08/1896 – Age 33 – Collier. Cwm, Crawshay Bros. Cyfartha Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face, stone, 13 feet x 5 feet x 1 foot thick, with only one prop. Bute seam.

JONES Ben - 1897 - 17/08/1897 – Age 44 – Collier. Glynes, Glynes Colliery Co., Carmarthen. Fall of roof at face, a bell stone from 7 to 9 foot diameter, unsupported. Bushy seam.

JONES Benjamin (injured) - 1890 - 15/09/1890 – Age 17 - Slate maker, Maen Offeren (slate). Part of one of his fingers cut off while putting a block of state on a sawing table. 4 weeks off.

JONES Benjamin (non-fatal) - 1893 - 06/06/1893 – Age 49 – Miner. Halkyn (metalliferous). After raising a piece of timber with the windlass he let the chain run down, without any lead and he was struck by the handle. Face bruised, tooth knocked out. 2 weeks off.

JONES Benjamin - 1892 - 31/05/1892 – Age 21 – Sinker. New Sinking, Main Colliery Co. Ltd., Duffryn, Glamorgan. Fall of stone from side of shaft which was not worked nor temporarily timbered.

JONES Benjamin - 1895 - 01/01/1895 – Age 24 – Rider. Cambrian Navigation, Thomas Riches and Co., Glamorgan. While riding inbye on last tram of journey with a tram loaded with 9 feet timber in front one of the props was jerked across the road and struck him. Six feet seam.

JONES Benjamin - 1896 - 27/01/1896 – Age 28 – Dataller. Black Park, Black Park, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attend. A quantity of surface debris fell down the shaft, which acted as a chimney to the underground steam boilers, the same falling on some heated ashes given off from the boilers. The deceased was applying a hose to the ashes when some more debris must have fallen which turned the steam back upon them scalding them so severely that they died of the injuries received. 2 killed.

JONES Benjamin - 1897 - 31/08/1897 – Age 63 – Pikeman. Springfield, Springfield Colliery Co., Worcestershire. Fall of roof through timber.

JONES Benjamin - 1899 - 22/06/1899 – Age 45 – Collier. Clifton Hall Trencherbone, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of coal from working face, overhanging 1 foot 6 inches, spragged at one end another sprag would have prevented it.

JONES Charles (injured) - 1891 - 18/03/1891 – Age 35 – Miner. Stopes No. 1, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Little Lever, Lancashire. Injured by roof which he was taking down. Inspection and inquiry.

JONES Charles - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 25 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JONES Charles - 1898 - 07/04/1898 – Age 58 – Collier. Bettisfield, Bettisfield Colliery Co. Ltd., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. A ripping shot had been fired on the jig, in the night shift, and cleared and while the deceased was preparing to clear and pack the remainder a stone fell upon him from between two slips in the back end of where the shot was fired. The place was propped on each side but not barred.

JONES Charles A. - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 19 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JONES D.J. - 1894 - 17/11/1894 – Age 18 – Collier. Dowlais No. 2, Dowlais Iron Co., Bedlinog, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (rock 50 square feet area from 6 to 12 inches thick) between the face and a row of props 8 to 10 foot back. It fell off at a slip which could have been seen before. Rowlands died November 21. Four feet seam. 2 killed.

JONES D.R. - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 15 – Haulier. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

JONES Daniel (non-fatal) - 1893 - 12/10/1893 – Age 18 – Carter. New Welsh Slate. Had his forefinger caught while unhooking a horse from a train of waggons. Piece of his finger cut off. Seven and a half weeks off.

JONES Daniel - 1893 - 12/04/1893 – Age 36 – Collier. Cyfartha Glyndurris, Crawshay Bros. Ltd., Merthyr, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (coal) (6 feet x 3 feet x 2 feet thick) while he was sounding it. One prop was discharged. Nine feet seam. Pillar and stall.

JONES Daniel - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 25 – Haulier. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JONES Daniel - 1897 - 18/01/1897 – Age 54 – Trammer. Penmaenmawr Diorite Quarry, Brundrit and Co., Carnarvon. An iron pin attaching a chain to a waggon broke; the waggon ran down an incline and killed the man who failed to get out of the way.

JONES Daniel - 1897 - 23/02/1897 – Age 41 – Repairer. Pencoed, Nevill Druce and Co., Carmarthen. Fall of roof on road while repairing where the roof had fallen to a height of thirty three feet. Four feet seam.

JONES Daniel E. - 1898 - 18/06/1898 – Age 25 – Haulier. Werfa, James Evens and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. His head came in contact with a collar while riding up a dip on a tram containing a water cask. Height of roadway at spot 5 foot 1 inch.

JONES David (injured) - 1890 - 15/01/1890 – Age 45 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). A block of slate resting on the ground which had been partly turned over by means of a crane fell back again when the chains were taken off and struck Jones on the knee. 12 weeks off.

JONES David (injured) - 1894 - 11/04/1894 – Age 17 - Slate dresser. Maen Offeren (slate). While he was dressing slate with a revolving knife machine he had the first and second fingers of his right hand so badly cut that parts of them had to be amputated. 7 weeks off.

JONES David - 1892 - 05/02/1892 – Age 42 – Rockman. New Welsh Slate. Fall of rock from the roof of the chamber in which they were working. 2 killed.

JONES David - 1892 - 11/10/1892 – Age 63 – Collier. Plymouth Works, Abercanaid Hills, Plymouth Co. Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Crushed between full and empty trams in trying to pass on endless rope haulage road.

JONES David - 1892 - 13/05/1892 – Age 43 – Collier. Woodshaw, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Aspull, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. There had been a break across the face of his working place and when he restarted feighing the coal, a stone from the break gave, knocking out two props and falling on the deceased.

JONES David - 1892 - 19/08/1892 – Age 28 – Collier. Ferndale No. 3, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fall of roof 8 feet x 6 feet at road end while knocking out a prop from below it to get the stone down.

JONES David - 1892 - 23/10/1892 – Age 41 – Repairer. Cambrian Navigation, Thomas Riches and Co., Clydach Vale, Glamorgan. Fall of a stone or piece of brick either from ascending cage or the side of the shaft.

JONES David - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 14 – Trammer. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

JONES David - 1893 - 12/06/1893 – Age 18 – Collier. Ocean Garw, Ocean Coal Co., Blaengarw, Glamorgan. Fatally injured by a loaded tram which had been left standing on an inclined road running back wild into their stall but how it came to do so was not satisfactorily ascertained. There appeared to have been carelessness in the changing of the trams. 2 killed.

JONES David - 1893 - 20/10/1893 – Age 47 – Repairer. Dowlais Fochriw No. 1, Dowlais Iron Co., Fochriw, Glamorgan. Fall of roof in old heading while building a stopping. Died March 6th, 1894.

JONES David - 1893 - 20/12/1893 – Age 23 – Drawer. Eccleston Hall, Eccleston Hall Colliery Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A balance box broke loose in a brow, through a faulty link in a coupling chain, causing it to break and get off the road knocking some timbers out and causing the roof to fall upon the deceased.

JONES David - 1893 - 23/01/1893 – Age 46 – Sinker. Dowlais Cardiff, Dowlais Iron Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by a large fall from the side of sinking pit. 8 killed. Died 22nd February, from injuries.

JONES David - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 23 – Ropeman. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JONES David - 1895 - 05/06/1895 – Age 27 – Rider. Morfa, Vivian and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by empty trams on engine plane, the hook at end of the drawbar having broken and thrown him off while riding in front of four teams.

JONES David - 1895 - 09/01/1895 - Age 24 – Miner. Cadzow, Cadzow Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of head coal.

JONES David - 1895 - 27/06/1895 – Age 48 – Haulier. International, International Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Run over by empty journey while oiling sheaves and rollers. He was acting as roadman for that day.

JONES David - 1896 - 12/06/1896 – Age 73 - Lamp station man. Gar Ocean, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck by a piece of coal falling down the shaft while about to ascend.

JONES David - 1896 - 13/04/1896 – Age 25 – Fitter. Naval Pandy, Naval Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fell from a mid-landing in stepping off the cage, which had been stopped there by a signal, unknown to deceased. He was intending going to the bottom and must have mistaken the landing for it.

JONES David - 1896 - 23/10/1896 – Age 38 – Repairer. Cae, Duke Loughor Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall on stall road while examining the place after the colliers had withdrawn themselves from it. Timbers were 5 feet apart. Five feet seam.

JONES David - 1896 - 27/01/1896 – Age 22. Ferndale Nos 7 & 8, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 57 killed.

JONES David - 1897 - 04/02/1897 – Age 22 – Collier. Pandy, Naval Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, stone 3 feet x 2 feet x 1 foot over a flat. New seam.

JONES David - 1897 - 10/03/1897 – Age 45 – Hardheadingman. Penrikyber, Penrikyber Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck by stone from a shot fired forty yards away.

JONES David - 1897 - 22/04/1897 – Age 22 – Quarryman. Upper Glynrhonwy Slate Quarry, Upper Glynrhonwy Slate Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. While he was pushing some blasting gelatine into a borehole with an iron scraper, it exploded, and inflicted injuries from which he died in a few hours.

JONES David - 1898 - 09/02/1898 – Age 16 – Enginedriver. Llwyypia No. 3, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Found fatally injured under the drum of a small haulage engine which he attended. There was no evidence to prove how he got there.

JONES David - 1898 - 16/11/1898 – Age 31 – Labourer. Llysfaen & Pentregwyddel Quarry, Kneeshaw Lupton and Co., Carnarvon. While he, along with others, was hoisting up a heavy piece of timber to one of the galleries (benches) by means of a hand winch, the piece shifted unexpectedly and caused the handle to fly back. He was struck by it and knocked over the edge of the gallery. He fell 60 feet and was killed on the spot.

JONES David - 1899 - 09/10/1899 – Age 24 – Collier. Cwmmawr, Cwmmawr Colliery Co., Carmarthen. Fall of roof at face, bell stone 12 feet x 8 feet x 2.5 feet thick in middle while holing, three props said to have been set under it. Rees' seam.

JONES David - 1899 - 26/06/1899 – Age 34 – Haulier. Abercrave, Abercrave Colliery Co., Brecon. Fatally injured by journey entering double parting, while deceased was stooping to see if the points were set right. Died 3rd July.

JONES David - 1899 - 30/09/1899 – Age 13 - Collier boy. Aberaman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Knocked down while apparently attempting to get on journey and was over.

JONES David Henry - 1892 - 16/07/1892 – Age 27 – Labourer. Glyn, James and W Woods, Pontypool, Monmouth. Fall of roof where room was being made for a double parting. The stone was released on the thick side by an unseen slip and it broke off at the edge of the gob on the thin side. Transferred to Bryndu Coal and Coke Co. Ltd.

JONES David John - 1892 - 20/09/1892 – Age 19 – Haulier. Llwynypia No. 1, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Llwynypia, Glamorgan. Fall of roof, 12 foot x 10 foot, on main road which was not double timbered.

JONES David Llewellyn - 1892 - 01/09/1892 – Age 14 - Door boy. Foxhole, Pwll Mawr Foxhole Collieries Co., Llansamlet, Glamorgan. Run over by trams while coming outbye after his days work.

JONES David T. - 1899 - 06/03/1899 – Age 42 -  Collier. Rhymney Merthyr, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof in his working place. It overhung at the side and broke off crop with the props. It seems one of those cases in which double timber should have been used instead of road posts.

JONES David W. - 1896 - 18/11/1896 – Age 21 – Collier. No. 9 Aberdare, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall at face. Died 30th Nov of lockjaw resulting from fracture of ankle.

JONES E. - 1896 - 03/03/1896 – Age 47 – Collier. Monckton Main, Monckton Main Coal Co. Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

JONES E. - 1897 - 05/01/1897 – Age 56 – Collier. Car House, John Brown and Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

JONES E.R. - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 17 – Trammer. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

JONES Eben (injured) - 1892 - 21/03/1892 – Age 38 – Rockman. Oakeley (Slate), He had lowered a block on to the ground by his crane and was standing by the side of it the block lurched a little and caused the crane handle to revolve and strike him. Nose broken. 2 weeks off.

JONES Edward (injured) - 1890 - 06/10/1890 – Age 32 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). He was working on the fall in the open when a stone weighing some hundredweight’s slipped away from a height of a few yards and rolled down and struck him. Part of his foot was crushed. 4 weeks off.

JONES Edward (injured) - 1891 - 08/01/1891 – Age 45 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). A piece of stone, projected by a blast, rebounded against the rock and struck him on the eye though he thought he was in a safe place. He has lost his eye. 19 weeks off.

JONES Edward (injured) - 1891 - 24/09/1891 – Age 22 – Trammer. New Minera (metalliferous). He fell down an ore shoot, while going to it without a light, he himself had neglected to put down the hinged cover after tipping a waggon into the shoot. 12 weeks off.

JONES Edward (injured) - 1892 - 02/06/1892 – Age 30 – Miner. Morgan (metalliferous). He was shifting the cradle of a rock drill and slipped, he caught the little finger of his right hand and injured it so that the top joint had to be amputated. Two and half weeks off.

JONES Edward (injured) - 1894 - 08/06/1894 – Age 30 – Slate getter. Oakeley (slate). Premature explosion of a small charge of gunpowder while he was ramming in tamping with a copper tipped stemmer. Ankle sprained. Five and half weeks off.

JONES Edward (non-fatal) - 1893 - 16/01/1893 – Age 53 – Miner. South, Halkyn & Rhydymwyn (metalliferous). Struck by a small stone, which fell down the shaft, possibly from a full waggon which had reached the top. 1 week off.

JONES Edward - 1890 - 01/03/1890 – Age 67 – Miner. Snowdon (metalliferous). He fell 7 feet while crossing a pile of rubbish in a level and broke some of his ribs. He was in a weak state of health and died unexpectedly of synope five days after the accident.

JONES Edward - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 33 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

JONES Edward - 1891 - 20/06/1891 – Age 56 – Roadsman. Elm, George Watkinson and Sons Ltd., Buckley, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was re-timbering a main roadway and was in the act of setting a prop when a large stone from under which he had just sawn two bars fell upon him and buried him. 3.0 am.

JONES Edward - 1891 - 23/04/1891 – Age 28 – Collier. California, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Aspull, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased was attaching his tally to his tub when a large stone fell from between two large slips running upwards to a point and crushed him against the tub. The place was fairly well timbered. 8.40 am.

JONES Edward - 1891 - 28/12/1891 – Age 27 – Collier. Tydraw, Beddoe and Son, Llamsamlet, Glamorgan. Fall of clift and coal while holing without sprags. Deceased was turning a stall, off side of heading, with 3 foot of ripping. 2 foot seam; 22  inches thick. Pillar and stall.

JONES Edward (injured) - 1892 - 06/02/1892 – Age 45 – Rockman. Oakeley. Roberts was pushing three pellets of gelignite into a hole with a wooden rammer when the charge exploded. 2 injured. 6 weeks off.

JONES Edward - 1892 - 11/05/1892 – Age 41 – Collier. Edge Green, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Golborne, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Whilst in the act of drawing a wooden chock out, in his working place, the roof fell upon deceased before he could get away.

JONES Edward - 1894 - 22/05/1894 – Age 54 - Door keeper. Cambrian Navigation No. 1, Thomas Riches and Co., Clydach Vale, Glamorgan. Run over by an empty journey, on an engine plane, where he was attending a door. Six feet seam.

JONES Edward - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 60 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JONES Edward - 1894 - 30/07/1894 – Age 26 - Haulage hand. New Broughton, T Clayton, Denbigh. Inquiry made. While he was in the act of guiding a journey of tub out of the pass-by, the shackle connecting the first two tub broke, and the first tub, being drawn along swiftly by the haulage rope, struck the deceased on the head before he could clear himself. He died at a London hospital after undergoing an operation March 28, 1895.

JONES Edward - 1895 - 05/01/1895 – Age 45 – Pikeman. Himley, Earl of Dudley, Staffordshire. Fall of roof coal when drawing timber. He was suffocated.

JONES Edward - 1895 - 19/10/1895 – Age 23 – Horsedriver. Hayes, Earl of Shrewsbury, Staffordshire. Fall of side. Horse also killed.

JONES Edward - 1895 - 27/07/1895 – Age 54 – Collier. Dinas Isha Ely, Rhondda Collieries Co., Glamorgan. Died on 20th December from injuries to his knee by a fall of clod from between two props at the face. No. 2 Rhondda seam; pillar and stall.

JONES Edward - 1896 - 01/08/1896 – Age 41 – Collier. Wynnstay, Wynnstay Collieries Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made. They had a stop block, to keep the tubs from running down the brow, which had been omitted to be fixed by the person last passing over it. Another person bringing a tub to that point expected the stopblock to be fixed when his tub overpowered him, and ran down the brow crushing the deceased who was engaged repairing the roadway.

JONES Edward - 1897 - 06/03/1897 – Age 19 – Trimmer. Ocean, Eastern Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Died from blood-poisoning, the result of injury to his heel by the wheel of a waggon which he was pushing under the screens.

JONES Edward - 1897 - 12/01/1897 – Age 20 – Collier. Park Hall, Park Hall Collieries Ltd., Weston Coney, Staffordshire. Large fall of roof and top coal at working face in Holly Lane seam. The fall came on at an undiscovered slip running parallel with and close to the Longwall face. It appeared probable that while endeavouring to get the coal down, after removal of sprags, the men had been in front of the coal. Dorricoit was killed on the spot, Jones died next day. 2 killed.

JONES Edward - 1898 - 27/09/1898 – Age 37 - Engine driver. Lester’s Minera Lime Works, CR Cowap, Denbigh. He fell off his locomotive while under the influence of drink and received injuries from which he died the following day.

JONES Edward - 1899 - 18/03/1899 – Age 40 – Banksman. Maindy, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fell through a space of 2 feet between cage containing water-tank and landing. No one else was there.

JONES Edward M. (injured) - 1891 - 23/05/1891 – Age 36 – Rockman. Lechwedd (slate). He had charged a crack with powder and finding that the snuff or candle end had failed to ignite the fuse he threw some stone to knock the snuff away. The snuff fell down and ignited some powder at the foot of the crack and so fired the whole charge. Face and eyes injured. 3 weeks off.

JONES Edwin - 1893 - 08/03/1893 – Age 30 – Dataller. Stopes No. 3, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Little Lever, Lancashire. A fireman had ordered him to try and get down some roof because it was broken and sounded hollow. After trying some time to get it down the fireman ordered him to put a bar up and left him. Whilst preparing to set the bar the roof fell, 5 feet 9 inches by 5 feet 3 inches by 4 to 8 inches thick.

JONES Elias - 1890 - 08/05/1890 – Age 44 – Miner. Talacre (metalliferous). The two men were standing upon a wooden stage or platform hanging by four chains from a hempen rope when it suddenly broke and the men were precipitated to the bottom of the shaft and killed. Two of the strands of rope had evidently been completely cut through and the third strand was half severed. There was no suspicion of foul play. It is possible that the rope was injured by a blow from some heavy castings which had been drawn up the shaft The sides of the shaft were in hard flinty rock. It is also possible that a stone falling down the shaft and rebounding from side to side may have injured the rope. 2 killed.

JONES Elias - 1893 - 28/04/1893 – Age 49 – Miner. Minera (metalliferous). Fall of a stage or bunning from the unexpected giving way of the rock, under the head of one of the pieces of timber which supported it. Jones was the taker of the bargain and had himself put in the bunning a week before the accident.

JONES Elias - 1897 - 04/11/1897 – Age 50 – Collier. New Duffryn, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof from an unseen slip. He was filling a tram, having only just finished setting timber. The place was fairly well secured (with Cogs and props) and the stone broke off at the side of the prop.

JONES Elijah - 1890 - 22/04/1890 – Age 32 – Holer. Tame Valley, Skey and Co., Tamworth, Staffordshire. He was seen to fall, whilst at work, and died immediately. Verdict, ‘Died from natural causes.’

JONES Ellis - 1892 - 14/06/1892 – Age 44 - Coke drawer. Towneley, Brooks and Pickup, Towneley, Lancashire. Crushed by waggon going up ladder to get into a high sided coke waggon. Locomotive shunting waggons on another line of rails pushed waggons against ladder. Deceased was thrown to the ground, and several waggons passed over him.

JONES Ellis - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 40 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion, 290 killed.

JONES Ellis - 1898 - 14/12/1898 – Age 40 – Collier. Plas Power, Broughton and Plaspower Coal Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were working a ribbing in the main coal seam, on the upper side of where there had been a break in the roof leaving the bind coal above them which gave way to the edge of the break capping two props and burying the deceased.

JONES Enoch - 1890 - 14/012/1890 - Shale miner. New Lodge, New Lodge Brick Works Co. Ltd., Burry Port, Glamorgan. Explosion of about 4 lbs. of powder in cartridges while handling them using a naked light. It was believed that he ignited the powder while inserting the fuse in one of the cartridges. Died 10th March.

JONES Enoch - 1892 - 18/11/1892 – Age 15 - Miner’s boy. Branch Railway, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Rhymney, Monmouth. Riding on the foot boards of the (evening) collier's train, he and three others were more or less seriously injured, they were knocked off by some waggons which were left standing on a siding too near the crossing.

JONES Ernest - 1896 - 28/03/1896 – Age 19 – Fanman. Meiros, Gas Coal Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 3 killed.

JONES Evan (injured) - 1892 - 02/04/1892 – Age 50 – Rockman. Oakeley (Slate). He was removing a roller from under a block of slate slung in the chain of a crane; the block slipped in the sling and caught his hand. Two finger badly crushed. 26 weeks off.

JONES Evan (injured) - 1892 - 19/12/1892 – Age 35 – Labourer. Aberllefenny (Slate). He was unloading a block of slate from a truck at the surface and somehow his crow bar slipped and struck him on the head. Two and a half weeks off.

JONES Evan (injured) - 1892 - 31/12/1892 – Age 24 – Rockman. Aberllefenny. He was assisting another man to lower a block of slate with a winch, and they used the handles instead of throwing them out of gear and depending upon the brake the rock proved too heavy for them, the handles were whirled round and Jones was struck on the forehead. 3 weeks off.

JONES Evan - 1891 - 03/07/1891 – Age 55 – Hardgroundman. Ynysfaio, Troedyrhiw Coal Co., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Deceased was in the act of crossing from one side of the shaft to the other, by way of the cage, instead of the proper side passage when the cage was raised and he was crushed against the shaft side. A hitcher had called "stand back the cage is knocked for," but he paid no heed to this warning. Breach of Special Rule 163.

JONES Evan - 1892 - 31/01/1892 – Age 49 – Pitman. Harris’ Navigation Deep, Navigation Collieries Ltd., Treharris, Glamorgan. Struck by rebound of a stone while loading rubbish in a lodge room.

JONES Evan - 1893 - 14/10/1892 – Age 38 – Sinker. Lea Green, Sutton Heath & Lea Green Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. While the deceased and seven other men were engaged walling the pit an explosion of gas took place, the deceased succumbed to the injuries received on the 20th instant.

JONES Evan - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 37 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

JONES Evan - 1895 - 16/10/1895 – Age 53 – Collier. Abergorky Glyncolly Level, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of clift 11 foot long 4 foot 9 inches wide 16 inches thick. While holing he struck a back when both coal and roof fell. One prop and one sprag were said to have been crushed out but the evidence hardly bore this out. Abergorky Seam.

JONES Evan - 1895 - 21/08/1895 – Age 47 – Hitcher. Coedcae Lewis, Merthyr Navigation Collieries Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck by the handle of a crab winch used to raise and lower a cage platform, the cage having been inadvertently lowered while deceased was working the crab. Died 16th August.

JONES Evan - 1896 - 04/08/1896 – Age 28 – Fireman. Main Bryncoch, Main Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 7 killed.

JONES Evan - 1896 - 21/08/1896 – Age 38 – Tunneller. Elliott East, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. While drilling a hole near a missed shot charged with carbonite and a detonator and which the battery had failed to fire it exploded killing deceased and injuring David Williams working who was with him. Presumably the hole which they were boring ran into the missed shot.

JONES Evan - 1898 - 09/05/1898 – Age 22 – Collier. Abergorky, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. A shot, said to have been charged with ammonite, and which had missed fire three days previously exploded probably while the deceased was withdrawing the wires and detonator. Deceased was removing some of the stemming.

JONES Evan - 1898 - 10/08/1898 – Age 51 – Pumpman. Nantyglo Pumping, Coalbrookvale Colliery Co., Monmouth. He fell down the shaft from the second landing, where he had gone to do some repairs to the pumps. The engineman wanting to remove the cage and receiving no signal from him caused a search to be made which resulted in his body being found at the bottom. He probably fell while stepping from the cage to the landing.

JONES Evans - 1892 - 19/01/1892 – Age 46 – Collier. Whitworth No. 1, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. While crossing the bottom of No. 1 shaft he was crushed by the descending cage. There appears to have been laxity about allowing men to cross the shaft instead of using the roadway for the purpose.

JONES Francis - 1893 - 07/07/1893 – Age 16 - Points boy. Ffrwd, James Sparrow and Son, Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was coupling and attending to the boxes on top of the brow. He apparently took the scotch out of the front of two tubs before putting points right at the top of the brow, while running in front, to put the points right, two of the tubs overtook him and knocked him down. These two he had omitted to couple to the others.

JONES Francis - 1894 - 30/05/1894 – Age 53 – Contractor. Vron, Vron Colliery Co., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was capping a sprag, with his pick, when the coal gave way to a slip which caught him before he could clear himself, the seam being 6 feet thick.

JONES Fred - 1895 - 30/03/1895 – Age 20 – Collier. Powell Duffyn, George, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased had just commenced to take down some overhanging clod when the roof (clift) 2 foot 2 inches thick fell from a face slip, close to coal back to gob, where it had previously fallen discharging the only prop within the area of about 40 feet. Four feet seam.

JONES Fred - 1899 - 28/03/1899 – Age 19 – Waggoner. Newton No. 2, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Crushed by tub which ran away down brown from the spunney brow from rope slipping off; he was standing in the brow whilst waggons running contrary to rule.

JONES Frederick - 1894 - 01/07/1894 – Age 45. Snibston, South Leicestershire Colliery Co., Coalville, Leicestershire. Doctor gave a certificate for burial but it being reported that the man had received an accident and inquest was held. The jury confirmed the doctor's certificate. Death due to "abscess of hand embolism, syncope," probably might be due to an accident.

JONES G. - 1897 - 09/07/1897 – Age 28 – Collier. Nunnery, Nunnery Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of side.

JONES George (injured) - 1890 - 01/12/1890 – Age 46 – Miner. Hewlett No. 2 Yard, Wigan Iron and Coal Co., Westhoughton, Lancashire. Leg broken by coal falling as he took out a sprag.

JONES George - 1890 - 19/12/1890 – Age 40. Newstead, Newstead Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Whilst pushing an empty tub he fell down and expired. No accident and nothing fell upon him. Verdict of Coroner's jury, ‘Death from apoplexy.’

JONES George - 1891 - 22/11/1891 – Age 27 – Repairer. Bedwellty, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. Riding out on a full tram his head was crushed between the top of the loaded coal and the roof. This was omitted from the statistics by mistake and will be included next year as if it occurred in 1892.

JONES George - 1894 - 19/03/1894 – Age 56 – Getter. Madeley Wood Kemberton, Madeley Wood Co., Madeley, Shropshire. Burnt by compressed gunpowder while inserting a charge in a shot hole, ignited by candle. Died 31st March.

JONES George - 1895 - 28/12/1895 – Age 62 – Collier. Point of Ayrshire, Point of Ayr Collieries Co. Ltd., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attend. They were engaged repairing and propping a roadway, the roof being coal, when he ventured to get some loose coal, beyond where he had timbered, the roof coal fell upon him from between two slips running along each side of his road.

JONES George - 1896 - 25/11/1896 – Age 24 – Shunter. Cwmtillery, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Monmouth. He stumbled, when getting under the buffers of some waggons, which he wanted to uncouple, before they had come to a standstill and was pushed along by the wheel of the second tram (which was loaded with pit wood) and killed. The man was to blame for doing what was dangerous and the management for (although cautioning him) not previously enforcing the prohibition of this dangerous practice.

JONES George - 1896 - 27/01/1896 – Age 19 – Labourer. Ferndale Nos 7 & 8, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 57 killed.

JONES George - 1896 - 27/11/1896 – Age 17 - Colliers’ boy. Lady Windsor, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face (clod) from between a prop 2 foot back and face about 3 foot x 2 foot x 1 foot thick No. 2 seam.

JONES George - 1897 - 02/11/1897 – Age 51 – Collier. Abergorky, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, clift about 11 foot x 6 foot in area inside of nearest timbers. Nine feet seam.

JONES George - 1897 - 24/03/1897 – Age 41 – Screeman. Plymouth Abercanaid, Hills Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. In coming down steps from screens to ground he missed his footing and fell, and was run over by the first of six empty waggons which at that moment were being shunted in by locomotive.

JONES George - 1899 - 07/07/1899 – Age 43 – Dataller. Birley, West Sheffield Coal Co., Derby. Fall of roof whilst repairing the roadway of an engine plane, probably due to cutting too near the bottom of a prop supporting one of the bars.

JONES George - 1899 - 28/09/1899 – Age 46 – Collier. Cardiff Navigation, TJ Masters, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face rock 6.5 feet x 3 feet x 2.5 foot thick, fell from between two slips while preparing to set a prop under it. Drydydd seam.

JONES George H. - 1891 - 12/01/1891 – Age 19 – Gangrider. Tyldesley 6 foot, Astley and Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Tyldesley, Lancashire. Died Feb. 2nd. from injuries by a train of tubs that came too quickly from the engine plane, he having omitted to hook the tail rope. Inspection and inquiry.

JONES Godfrey - 1893 - 23/01/1893 – Age 20 – Sinker. Dowlais Cardiff, Dowlais Iron Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by a large fall from the side of sinking pit. 8 killed.

JONES Gomer - 1893 - 15/09/1893 – Age 26 – Collier. Tower, Marques of Bute, Hirwain, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (clod 9 feet x 4 feet x 6 inches thick) at face. No timbers set. Seven feet seam. Died September 21st.

JONES Gower (non-fatal) - 1893 - 19/01/1893 – Age 44 – Miner. Halkyn (metalliferous). They set fire to the fuses of two holes charged with gelatine dynamite and retired to a safe place. After waiting a short time they went back to their working place under the impression that both shots had gone off. One hole however had hung fire and exploded almost immediately after their return. 1 killed 1 injured. 13 weeks off.

JONES Griffith (injured) - 1891 - 26/10/1891 – Age 49 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). He was working at the foot of a heap of slate and rubbish and had just lowered a block of slate on to the ground, with his winch, when a stone rolled down the heap struck the chain and caused the winch handle to revolve. It hit him, 7 weeks off.

JONES Griffith (injured) - 1892 - 18/05/1892 – Age 40 – Rockman. New Welsh Slate, Cwmorthin. Unexpected fall of two tons of rock from the side of a pillar, ribs fractured and a deep scalp wound. The party of men had been at work taking down loose rock from the side of the pillar two days before the accident and Griffith Jones had examined the place and thought it safe. 19 week off.

JONES Griffith (injured) - 1894 - 19/09/1894 – Age 50 - Slate getter. Oakeley (slate). His rope broke while at work and he fell down the working face of his chamber. Scalp wound. The rope was an old one which his partner had warned him not to use. 5 weeks off.
