FISHER J. - 1897 - 13/03/1897 – Age 19 – Hurrier. Sharlston, New Sharlston Coal Co. Normanton, Yorkshire. In bringing out a full corf, out of the face, it struck against an empty one and crushed his head against the pack wall.

FISHER James - 1894 - 02/03/1894 – Age 55 – Miner. Postlethwaite’s Moor Row No. 5 (metalliferous), Miles Postlethwaite, Moor Row, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Fall of stone from a damp parting. The place had been inspected, by an official, previous to the men commencing work and the men themselves had examined this particular pillar lump and considered it safe. He died on the 2nd April.

FISHER William - 1890 - 26/06/1890 – Age 14 - Door boy. Westminster, Westminster & Brymbo Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The roadway had just been re-timbered by the deceased’s father, who had apparently left it safe, but a small stone fell as the boy was passing and caught him on the head.

FITTS Samuel - 1892 - 30/06/1892 – Age 48 – Miner. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. Both legs broken by a fall of stone while assisting to bar it down. Died 1st August.
FITZGERALD Dan - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 18 – Trammer. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.
FITZGERALD E.T. - 1895 - 20/09/1895 – Age 37 – Roadsman. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Glamorgan. Crushed by empty journey, at a branch road off main dip, the journey intended to go straight down the dip, having left the rails and struck against the lower side of branch road where deceased was sitting.
FITZPATRICK M. - 1898 - 05/01/1898 – Age 39 – Roadsman. Park Hall, Park Hall Collieries Ltd., Weston Coney, Staffordshire. He was going down an engine dip, with a journey of tubs riding on the rope, and was thrown off at a curve near shunt in level, either by the tubs getting off the rails or by his head striking a bar. Skull fractured.
FITZPATRICK Michael (non-fatal) - 1892 - 05/04/1892 – Miner. Bardykes No 1, Merry and Cuninghame, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Jammed between two hutches.
FITZPATRICK Peter - 1899 - 16/05/1899 – Age 33 - Pit bottomer. Foulford, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased, whose usual work was bottomer, was a handy man and for the shift he was engaged as dook runner. The rake which usually consisted of twelve tubs ran at an average speed of four miles an hour and the runner had permission to ride in front of the loaded rake when ascending the dook and behind in the empty rake when descending. No one saw the accident but the attention of a driver was drawn by the rope striking the roof and on examination part of the rake was found to be overturned at the top of the dook and deceased under it. He had apparently fallen off the front tub on which he sat.
FITZSIMMONS Charles - 1897 - 07/07/1897 – Age 60 – Oiler. Lochgelly, Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. While attending to his duties, on an endless rope haulage road, a take of fall hutches became detached from the rope and ran back to the deceased and crushed him.
FITZSIMMONS Charles - 1897 - 22/03/1897 – Age 60 – Filler. Prestongrange, Summerlee & Mossend Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Haddington. Deceased was riding down a dook on a bogie behind an empty descending rake when four empty tubs ran away from the top of the dock and overtook him.
FITZWILLIAM John - 1893 - 10/07/1893 – Age 62- Miner. No. 5 (metalliferous), Hodbarrow Mining Co. Ltd., Millom, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased had lighted the fuse of a shot and thinking it had misfired returned to the place when it exploded and killed him.
FITZWILLIAM John - 1893 - 10/07/1893 – Age 62 – Miner. No. 5 Millom, Hodbarrow Mining Co. Ltd., Millom, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. When the locomotive and a waggon were crossing the points the waggon got off the rails and crushed the deceased (who was holding the lever) against a gatepost.
FLAHERTY Donald - 1893 - 26/01/1893 – Age 69 – Labourer. Ferndale No. 4, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Ferndale, Glamorgan. While cleaning the rails, about the screens, a wagon moved forward a little and he fell with his leg under the wheel. Died 12th March.
FLAHERTY Patrick - 1895 - 01/03/1895 – Age 46 – Collier. Pewfall, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased went into his working place and commenced to draw a prop, which was in the way of his tub getting to the face. He must have misjudged the security of the roof which fell upon him.

FLAHERTY Thomas - 1893 - 11/01/1893 – Age 33 – Sinker. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was struck on the head by a brick falling down the shaft, most probably from where there was some unfinished walling at the ingate of the shaft at the surface.
FLANNAGHAN Hugh - 1891 - 18/08/1891 – Age 45 – Dataler. Garswood Hall, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased men were clearing up some metal roofing, which had been blown down some hours previously, when a quantity of metal from the sides of the roadway fell upon them and before they could get away a second fall took place and buried them. 2 killed. 6.15 am.

FLETCHER CW - 1894 - 17/04/1894 – Age 13 – Waggoner. Audley, W Rigby and Co., Audley, Staffordshire. Fall of roof from slips in main level in 10 foot seam. Head cut and thigh crushed.
FLETCHER Edward - 1893 - 16/03/1893 – Age 43 – Collier. Brynn Hall, Brynn Hall Colliery Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased, while bringing his tub down a brow, was overtaken and crushed by another tub, the scotch having come out and overpowered the other drawer. The road was narrow in the lower part where the accident occurred and the jury recommended the road to be made wider on one side.
FLETCHER Edward - 1893 - 31/07/1893 – Age 17 – Driver. Wearmouth, Wearmouth Coal Co., Wearmouth, Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. It was the deceased's duty to stop the set at the top of a bank, put two sprags in and then start again, but it is supposed on this occasion he did not stop the pony and was running alongside to get on the limmers when he was caught against a prop which was much nearer to the tubs than the others.

FLETCHER Isaac - 1896 - 17/04/1896 – Age 40 – Tunneller. Brynn Hall, Brynn Hall Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made. A shot had been fired, in the face of a tunnel, and the deceased had drawn some loose stone down from the roof, a stone fell from a step in the side, which they had not been able to secure, crushing the deceased. He succumbed to the injuries received May 1st.
FLETCHER John - 1893 - 05/09/1893 – Age 47 – Sinker. Tibshelf No. 3, Babbington Coal Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. He was descending the shaft, in a tub, when the tub caught a scaffold in the shaft and he was thrown out and fell to the bottom.
FLETCHER Joseph - 1899 - 08/08/1899 – Age 17 - Incline braker. Robin Hood, Flimby & Broughton Moor Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Fletcher and others were trying to land an empty set of four tubs which had failed to reach the bank (Fletcher being in front of the tubs) when a set of eight full tubs, attached to the other end of the set, were in motion, thereby causing the empty tubs and deceased to be dashed against the incline wheel.
FLETCHER Joseph Samuel - 1898 - 24/08/1898 – Age 42 – Header. Granville No. 1, Granville Colliery Co., Derby. Fall of coal. The deceased was in a heading, when the lower portion of the seam fell upon him. He had set a long sprag to the upper portion of the coal but neglected to set one to the lower part.

FLETCHER Samuel - 1894 - 19/04/1894 – Age 28 – Banksman. Bank Farm, H Brown and Co., Harecastle, Cheshire. Arm deeply cut by cotter axle of tub while he was tipping it.
FLETCHER Samuel - 1895 - 22/01/1895 – Age 56 – Dataller. Stanton, J and N Nadin, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was engaged repairing a roadway and should, by the rules of the mine, have set a prop to protect himself while setting bars to support the roof. He neglected to set the prop, although cautioned of the danger.
FLETCHER Thomas - 1893 - 23/02/1893 – Age 58 – Deputy. Pye Hill Low Main, James Oakes and Co., Riddings, Alfreton. Nottinghamshire. Deceased was firing a shot in the gate ripping and did not go far enough away. Some piece of rocks were blown down the gate and hit the deceased. Died 25th.
FLETCHER William - 1892 - 17/11/1892 – Age 18 – Putter. South Moor, South Moor Coal Co. Ltd., Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Passed a fence, contrary to orders, and commenced to hew coal when a fall took place killing him on the spot.
FLETCHER William - 1895 - 04/03/1895 – Age 52 – Miner. Rosedale (Ironstone), Carlton Iron Co. Ltd., Rosedale, North Yorkshire. Died in his working place from apoplexy while working with his son. Ventilation all right.
FLETCHER William - 1895 - 30/03/1895 – Age 16 - Rope lad. Beamish ‘Air’, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Beamish, Co. Durham. Inspection and inquest attended. The deceased was waiting at the bottom of the shaft to go to the surface. Evidently some misunderstanding had taken place with the signals given by the onsetter to the banksman and the engineman, at the surface, for on attempting to enter the cage it was moved away and the deceased fell into the shaft.
FLEW George - 1893 - 19/02/1893 – Age 30 – Labourer. Bryndu & Cefn, Bryndu Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Pyle, Glamorgan. While moving loaded trucks and walking backwards he was crushed between a truck and the retaining wall.
FLICK James (injured) - 1894 - 15/01/1894 – Age 45 – Getter. Donnington, Granville Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Donnington, Shropshire. Fall of coal while drawing a sprag at working face in Randle Coal. Two ribs broken and leg slightly injured.
FLINT. Thomas - 1899 - 27/03/1899 – Age 26 – Shunter. Clifton, Clifton Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased was coupling two waggons together, while they were in motion and being pushed under the screens. He got crushed between a waggon and one of the supports at the picking platform attached to the screens.
FLITCROFT James - 1890 - 03/06/1890 – Age 61 – Dataler. Hindley Green, J Scowcroft and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had been drawing some chocks and was taking out a prop when a stone fell and caught him. The jury expressed an opinion that timber should not be drawn while the Colliers were at work.
FLITCROFT William (injured) - 1890 - 21/10/1890 – Age 44 – Miner. Pendlebury Crumbouke, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Pendlebury, Lancashire. Injured by roof coal falling, it being burst off by a cramp or subsidence.
FLOOK ? - 1898 - 10/03/1898 – Labourer. Hollybrook Brickworks, Stoke Gifford. Killed on the 10th March by falling under a traction engine, of which he was in charge, on the highway near Stoke Gifford, some miles away from the works.
FLOOK Robert - 1894 - 14/12/1894 – Age 73 – Packer. Parkfield, Kingswood and Parkfield Collieries Co. Ltd., Bristol, Gloucester. A scale of roof 1.5 foot. x 2 feet x 4 inches thick on one side thinning to a feather edge on the other side, it fell on the back of his neck while engaged packing rubbish near the face. He died in the Bristol Infirmary two days later from exhaustion resulting from bronchitis and delirium following the injuries which alone would not have been sufficient to cause his death had he been a healthy man.
FLORY George - 1892 - 26/07/1892 – Age 30 – Stallman. Pleasley, Stanton Iron Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. The deceased stated that he had strained himself by lifting a full tub on the rails. He died from spinal and brain disease presumably caused by the strain. Died 5th August.
FLOWER George (survivor) - 1895 - 06/02/1895. Timsbury, Samborne Smith and Co., Timsbury, Somerset. A shot, which proved to be over charged with powder, ignited coal dust and thus caused an extensive explosion. The overcharge resulted from an unseen joint lessening the work which it was intended to do. 7 killed. Widower with a grown up family.
FLOWER James - 1894 - 06/10/1894 – Age 13 - Door boy. Griffin No. 1. John Lancaster and Co., Blaina, Monmouth. While engaged opening the door on the engine plane, which he was in charge of, the gang struck it, carried it away and killed him. The boy seems too young and weak to have been put at the place. An almost similar accident occurred about two years previously in one of this company’s pits. Doors should not, and need not, be put in engine planes.
FLOWERS James - 1892 - 03/05/1892 – Age 27 – Hewer. Ashton Vale, Ashton Vale Iron Co. Ltd., Bristol, Gloucester. Sudden irruption of water, from an unknown and unsuspected old shaft, no record of which had even now been found. It was only sunk through tile coal and it is supposed to have been 130 to 150 years ago. The seam had not been opened out upon. 2 killed.
FLOWERS John - 1891 - 04/12/1891 – Age 63 – Watchman. Llwynypia No. 2, Glamorgan Coal Co., Llwynypia, Glamorgan. Knocked down by journey of trams, while cleaning road after being warned to stand clear.
FLOYD Edward - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Collier. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.
FLYNN James - 1898 - 27/09/1898 – Age 19 – Carter. Hailes Sandstone Quarry, Edinburgh. Deceased was proceeding up the narrow side of a rising tram road, from the quarry, with two horses hauling a loaded cart of sandstone, and falling in front of the cart it passed over him. The horses were going at half a gallop.

FLYNN Thomas - 1892 - 14/01/1892 – Age 18 – Putter. Hutton Henry, Hutton Henry Coal Co. Ltd., Wingate, Co. Durham. Fall of large stone, at turn, while he was waiting for a tub being filled.

FOGGERTY Philip - 1899 - 20/02/1899 – Age 23 - Drawer. Bold, Collin Green Colliery Coal Co., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The chain, attaching two full boxes to the endless rope, going upbrow slipped and the boxes in running down brow collided with an empty tub at the level shunt causing a bar to be displaced, which liberated the portion of which fell upon the three drawers who were having their breakfast at the time. The road was rough in places and ought to have been more substantially timbered. 3 killed.

FOOTE Joseph - 1899 - 15/11/1899 – Age 45 - Labourer. Furzeyground Clay Quarry, Pike Bros., Dorset. When riding on a full truck, inside the clay pit, the break lever flew up and struck his throat. He died on the 8th December under an operation for tracheotomy.

FORBES Charles - 1898 - 11/03/1898 – Age 41 – Foreman. Braehead Sandstone Quarry, Turners Ltd., Linlithgow. Two masses of tirr, consisting of clay and small stones were being broken up by firing simultaneously a shot of gelignite in each, and a small stone appears to have been projected, which struck the deceased on the head. He was standing on the quarry top, 150 yards away.
FORBES George - 1897 - 09/04/1897 – Age 17 – Putter. Auckland Park, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. While going inbye, with an empty tub, a fall of stone from the roof took place, a piece of which hit him on the left side temple and killed him instantly.

FORD Albert (non-fatal) - 1893 - 07/11/1893 – Miner. Farleigh (metalliferous), Bath Stone Firms Ltd., Monckton Farleigh, Somerset. When running a loaded tram gravitation down the tram road on the surface his foot slipped from the brake level which flying up struck his head.
FORD Arthur - 1890 - 19/08/1890 – Age 20 – Grassmoor. Grassmoor Colliery Co. Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He was supposed to have been injured by straining himself in the mine but the doctor certified that he died from a chronic pelvic abscess. No accident happened to the man and he appears to have been in bad health for some time.
FORD Arthur - 1899 - 18/04/1899 – Age 22 – Haulier. Merthyr Vale No. 1, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed between a tram and an arm of pair of timbers which was discharged while clearing a fall on road.

FORD John - 1896 – 05/12/1896 – Age 71 – Holer. Griff, Clara Griff Colliery Co., Warwick. A loaded tram ran off the rails 10 yards down a self acting incline and the deceased went to put it on to the top of the incline but it ran down and fatally injured the deceased. The stop blocks had not been closed or the tram would not have run away. Died 1st Mar 1897.

The deceased was working in face of a down brow when a stone fell from a pot hole in the roof, he succumbed to the injuries received December 14th.
FORSHAW Edward - 1898 - 16/09/1898 – Age 16 - Haulage hand. Old Boston, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was in the act of attaching the trail bar behind the haulage sett, in the bottom shunt in the Higher Florida Mine where the roadway was about 12 feet wide, when a portion of the roof fell upon him from a slip. The roof in that part had been considered strong and not timbered. It was recommended that it should be barred for safety.
FORSHAW James - 1897 - 30/11/1897 – Age 21 - Hooker on. Tawd Vale, Tawd Vale Colliery Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inquiry made. The two deceased were drowned by the flooding of Tawd Vale Colliery, caused by a fall occurring into some old crop workings into which the River Tawd found its way and passing through the old workings and down the shafts drowning the two men who were the only persons below at the time. 2 killed.
FORSHAW James - 1899 - 29/05/1899 – Age 26 – Dataller. Moss No. 4, Pearson & Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A part of the mine had been worked out and these two men (one being the fireman of the district) were getting out the rails and other things. They found firedamp had accumulated but they nevertheless, having put their safety lamps back, ventured into it to get an iron flat sheet which they had forgotten. They were both suffocated before they were got out. 2 killed.
FORSHAW Robert - 1899 - 19/04/1899 – Age 26 – Hewer. Bebside, Bebside Coal Co. Ltd., Bebside, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. A shot had been fired in the coal and dislodged some timber, which deceased and his marrow were engaged renewing, when a large stone fell from some slips. The roof was known to be bad and consequently had been well timbered previously.

Deceased was travelling down the endless rope brow to his work, which was rather steep, when a full tub ran down through a chain getting loose and striking the deceased before he could reach a manhole. It was suggested at the inquest that the haulage should not start until the colliers are clear the brow.

Caught by tubs, which ran away in engine brow owing to carelessness of drawer not seeing that tubs were coupled. Deceased went 60 yards up brow without a light, sat down to empty his clogs, waiting for the drawer to bring a lamp.
FOULKS Arthur - 1898 - 04/08/1898 – Age 14 - Coupling boy. Markham No. 1, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was coupling tubs, to an endless rope, and to do this he had to walk backwards until the clip was attached. He stumbled over a roller and fell under the tubs fatal injuries. He died the same day.
FOUNTAIN John - 1898 - 17/06/1898 – Age 27 – Quarryman. Sewell Chalk Quarry, BJ Forder and Son, Bedford. Fall of chalk. Deceased was working at the quarry face and after pulling a portion down a further quantity fell and killed him.

Whilst unloading the lower deck of a cage a water tub on the upper deck came out and fell upon the deceased. The catch, which should have held the water tub in the cage, was defective owing to some bolts coming loose.
