GREENWOOD J. - 1890 - 26/07/1890 – Age 26 – Collier. Nunnery, Nunnery Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Crushed by tubs. Died 2nd Aug.

GREENWOOD J. - 1899 - 17/03/1899 – Age 55 – Quarryman. West End, Sandstone Quarry Co., Barrett and Sons Ltd., Yorkshire. Fell from a ledge to bottom of quarry, a distance of about 42 feet.

GREENWOOD John - 1894 - 02/08/1894 – Age 36 - Miner. Ashieburn, William McKinlay, Muirkirk, Ayrshire. Fall of roof at working face.

GREENWOOD R. - 1896 - 04/03/1896 – Age 47 – Undermanager. Morley Main, W Ackroyd and Bros., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

GREENWOOD Thomas William - 1895 - 16/12/1895 – Age 27 – Hewer. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Ryhope, Co. Durham. Heavy fall of stone in broken jud.

GREENWOOD William - 1892 - 05/08/1892 – Age 14 - Lasher on. Orrell, Orrell Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was a lasher-on to endless rope haulage and somehow got his head fast between rope and pulley which was working horizontally 3 feet from the ground.

GREESNMITH William - 1898 - 27/05/1898 – Age 53 – Stallman. Linby Top Hard Coal, Linby Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was pulling roof coal down when a fall of roof occurred and killed him.

GREGOR John (injured) - 1890 - 21/05/1890 – Age 23 – Shaftsman. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Carn Brea, R.S.O. Cornwall. Fell 4.5 fathoms through the stage on which they were standing in the shaft giving way. Phillips received a blow on the side but was not seriously hurt, while Gregor was cut above the eye and had his arm broken. The men had erected their own stage. 2 injured.

GREGORY G.T. - 1895 - 27/11/1895 – Age 52 – Labourer. Alexandrina, Marquis of Londonderry, Co. Durham. Knocked down and run over by waggons while crossing branches.

GREGORY John - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 26 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

GREGORY Johnathan - 1898 - 07/12/1898 – Age 27 – Collier. Abram, Abram Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was engaged getting coal, in the longwall face, when a fall of roof occurred from between two slips running parallel with the face, the place was being barred as the face advanced.

GREGORY Moses (injured) - 1890 - 03/07/1890 – Age 47 - Pump attdnt. Victoria 7 Foot, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Atherton, Lancashire. Hip bone splintered by catching pulley frame in the roof when riding up the engine brow.

GREGORY Nicholas - 1890 - 25/01/1890 – Age 49 – Undermanager. Longhirst, Ashington Coal Co., Ashington, Northumberland. Killed by fall of stone from roof while giving instructions to workmen. 9.0 am.

GREGORY Robert - 1890 - 20/02/1890 – Age 18 – Miner. Hamilton Place No. 1, Bent Coal Co., Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at road head.

GREGORY William (injured) - 1890 - 11/03/1890 – Age 32 – Miner. Agecroft Shuttle, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Pendlebury, Lancashire. Instead injured by a gig handle, which flew off the full tub that was being lowered, having stuck before reaching the bottom and then gone on again.

GREGSON James - 1897 - 21/12/1897 – Age 41 – Dataller. Moss No. 5, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was sent to clear a large fall, which had stopped at a bar, leaving a stone projecting and this stone eventually fell on the deceased, apparently they ought to have placed some timber under it. The fireman saw the place half an hour before the accident but did not detect the danger.

GREIG Andrew - 1894 - 05/09/1894 – Age 66 – Reddsman. Dalbeith, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Fall of roof and side.

GRENFELL Edward (non-fatal) - 1891 - 24/04/1891 – Age 15 - Asst. shaftsman. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mining Co., St. Just, Cornwall. His foot was caught under the wheel of a winch (worked by Compressed air) which he was interfering with in spare time.

Edward (non-fatal) - 1892 - 10/12/1892 – Age 17 – Miner. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mine Adventurers, St. Just, Cornwall. A small stone fell upon him while engaged breaking up some large rock which had been blasted down shortly before.

GRENFELL John T. (non-fatal) - 1893 - 01/12/1893 – Age 25 – Miner. Botallack (metalliferous), Botallock Mine Adventurers, St. Just, Cornwall. He had filled the skip at the 180-fathom level and before signalling it away he was examining it to see that the wheels were all clear. While so engaged a signal was given at some of the upper levels, by someone unknown who wanted to ride to the surface, and in consequence of which the skip was drawn up. He was caught up by it and carried several feet when he fell, his hip joint being dislocated.

GRENFELL Thomas (non-fatal) - 1893 - 30/01/1893 – Age 23 – Miner. Levant (metalliferous), Levant Mine Adventurers, St. Just, Cornwall. Fell into a hole under the tram road in consequence of the plank breaking while he was crossing upon it.

GRENFELL Thomas (non-fatal) - 1893 - 15/09/1893 – Age 17 – Miner. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mine Adventurers, St. Just, Cornwall. Not keeping himself within the gig or cage while ascending the shaft he was crushed against a beam forming part of pent house over the landing at the 160 fathom level.

GREWCOCK Joseph - 1898 - 24/03/1898 – Age 11 - Brick carrier. Wain’s Heather Horks Clay Quarry, Executors of A Wain, Warwick. In going for bricks he attempted to get on to an ascending cage or hoist when in motion and was crushed when the cage reached the floor above. He died the next day.

GREY Albert - 1896 - 14/07/1896 – Age 14 – Doorboy. Ocean Deep Navigation, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed between trams and the door at which he was stationed, having apparently neglected to open it soon enough to get out of the way.

GREY David - 1890 - 01/10/1890 – Age 59 - Wood cutter. Denbeath, Bowman and Co., Fife. Fall of material down incline. 5.15 am.

GREY Joseph - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 20 – Shackler. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

GREY Joseph Alfred - 1891 - 15/04/1891 – Age 35 – Stallman. Ellistown, JJ Ellis’ executors, Leicester. Fall of Coal. Deceased was wedging the coal down when suddenly it burst from the face and fell upon him. 2.30 pm.

GREY Richard - 1892 - 05/04/1892 – Age 26 – Mason. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mine Adventurers, Carn Brea, Cornwall. In consequence of the breakage of the strapping plate or anchor plate of the stay belonging to a steam derrick the jib fell upon him and broke his back. The derrick was in use for the building of a new pumping engine house and was the property of the contractor. There appeared to be a flaw in the iron at a weld but it is very questionable whether it could have been noticed with any ordinary examination. There should have been a strap on each side of the stay. Deceased was a mason and was at the time having a stone about 1.5 cwts (a comparatively small one) lowered into its place. The same derrick had lifted stones, 2 tons weight, at the same building.

GREY William (non-fatal) - 1890 - 10/02/1890 – Age 33 – Driver. Earnock, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

GRIBBLE Thomas (non-fatal) - 1891 - 14/04/1891 – Age 27 – Miner. South Wheal Frances (metalliferous), South Wheal Frances Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. His head was injured by the handle of a winch which slipped from his grasp. Gribble and his comrade were engaged changing a bucket when by some means the main rod caught the chain and caused a jerk.

GRIBBLE Thomas (non-fatal) - 1893 - 06/07/1893 – Age 22 – Miner. East Pool (metalliferous), East Pool Mine Adventurers, Illogan, Cornwall. While engaged at work, in a winze, he seems to have slipped or overbalanced and fallen on the mineral which caused injuries to his head and back.

GRIEVESON Thio. W. - 1893 – 30/11/1893 - Age 38 – Shifter. Littletown, Earl of Durham, Co. Durham. He had just entered the pit and while passing along the siding he fell and died from natural causes. The ventilation and lighting of the place was all right.

GRIFFIN J. - 1899 - 16/01/1899 - Age 13 - Scale picker. Soothill Wood, Soothill Wood Coal Co., Yorkshire. When playing he jumped over a fence and got his foot fast in the creeper chain.

GRIFFIN Thomas - 1896 - 02/05/1896 - Age 45 - Loader. Tividale Marl (quarry), Birmingham Canal Co., Staffordshire. Fall of marl clay from face of quarry, from a height of 14 feet. The face was incautiously allowed to hang over.

GRIFFITH Ben - 1894 - 24/04/1894 - Age 14 - Door boy. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. While leaning against the side of a heading a horse slipped on the rail and fell against him.

GRIFFITH D. - 1894 - 08/10/1894 - Age 21 - Haulier. Gwaun Cae Gurwen, Gwaun Cae Gurwen Colliery Co., Brynamman, Glamorgan. Kicked by a horse while on his way to the stables after finishing his work.

GRIFFITH David - 1893 - 01/11/1893 - Age 18 - Collier. Cyfartha Cwm, Crawshay Bros. Ltd., Merthyr, Glamorgan. Fall of face slip of coal (9 foot in length) which was said to have been spragged. Five feet seam.

GRIFFITH Evan - 1894 - 01/01/1894 – Age 32 – Collier. Gorseinion, Glasbrook Bros., Gorseinion, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp.

GRIFFITH Evan - 1897 - 18/11/1897 – Age 75 – Labourer. Garth Merthyr, Garth Merthyr Colliery Co., Glamorgan. Run over by journey, while cleaning the road, having failed to get out of the way.

GRIFFITH Hugh - 1892 - 04/06/1892 – Age 27 – Timberman. Ocean, Eastern Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Ystrad Rhondda, Glamorgan. Fall of roof while reopening a double parting where there was an overlap fault crossing. 2 killed.

GRIFFITH John (injured) - 1891 - 23/01/1891 – Age 36 - Rockman Park (slate). Premature and unexpected fall of slate rock from the roof, which was only a few feet above them and which had been sounded by them and pronounced safe a few days before. One and a half weeks off. 1 killed, 1 injured. 1 week off.

GRIFFITH John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 27/10/1893 – Age 59 – Labourer. Wrysgan (slate). He was tramming in a level and he pushed his empty truck against a full one, coming in the opposite direction, he had his nose badly cut by the projecting load of slate. Deafness prevented his hearing the approach of the truck. 13 weeks off.

GRIFFITH John - 1894 - 24/01/1894 – Age 55 – Ripper. Navigation, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on main road where the roof was being blasted to make height and width for arching it. Six feet seam.

GRIFFITH John - 1895 - 05/12/1895 – Age 54 – Miner. Oakley (metalliferous), Oakley Slate Quarries Co. Ltd., Merioneth. Boring a hole into a charge of gelignite which had missed fire. Five shots had been charged with gelignite in the day shift and ignited. Only four reports were heard but as part of the 5th hole was blown away it was concluded that two of the five shots had gone off precisely at the same instant. John Griffith, one of the nigh shift men, had no suspicion that any explosive remained in the hole and began boring another hole close to it and pointing towards it with the result that the hidden charge exploded as soon as it was struck by the drill.

GRIFFITH John R. - 1893 - 11/12/1893 – Age 24 – Rockman. Rhosydd (slate). Fall of a piece of slate weighing about 4 cwt which he was in the act of getting down. It caught his leg against a sharp stone and severed the main artery in the calf. Though his comrades succeeded in stopping the bleeding within eight minutes after the accident he died from the loss of blood and the shock in less two hours.

GRIFFITH Morgan - 1894 - 10/11/1894 – Age 30 – Collier. Gadlys Dyllas, Waynes Merthyr Co. Ltd., Llwydcoed, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 2 killed.

GRIFFITH Morris (injured) - 1890 - 28/03/1890 – Age 46 – Platelayer. Rhosydd (slate). He was struck by a piece of rock which fell upon the floor above him and unexpectedly rolled down the working face and struck him. 13 months off.

GRIFFITH Richard - 1894 - 04/06/1894 – Age 50 – Repairer. Cambrian Navigation No. 2, Thomas Riches and Co., Clydach Vale, Glamorgan. In attempting to cross a fall of roof, which he had brought down by cutting out some timbers, he struck against an old lag and brought a second fall upon him.

GRIFFITH Robert - 1898 - 29/09/1898 – Age 24 – Labourer. Pantdreiniog Slate Quarry, Bangor Slate & Slab Quarry Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. While he was riding in a cage, up an almost vertical shaft, the cage left the rails and he fell to the bottom of the shaft a distance of 19 feet. He died on the 3rd October.

GRIFFITH Rowland - 1895 - 10/04/1895 – Age 63 - Slate getter. Penrhyn (quarry), Lord Penrhyn, Carnarvon. He was in the act of wedging off a block of slate when a piece fell and killed him, by its blow or by knocking him off the ledge on which he was standing, and precipitating him to the floor below, a distance of 45 feet. Died almost immediately.

GRIFFITHS Charles - 1893 - 27/03/1893 – Age 45 – Hewer. Walker, Walker Coal Co., Walker, Northumberland. Inquest attended. He died on the 21st September and from the evidence given at the inquest he appeared to have strained himself whilst lifting a stone.

GRIFFITHS Daniel - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Collier. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

GRIFFITHS Daniel - 1892 - 20/02/1892 – Age 41 – Fitter. Cefn, J and W Wood, Kenfig Hill, Glamorgan. Crushed by a boiler which was being removed from a truck on the railway. 2 killed.

GRIFFITHS Daniel - 1896 - 23/12/1896 – Age 40 – Collier. Elms, G Watkinson and Sons Ltd., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was in the act of capping timber, in an abandoned road, when the roof gave way to a slip, knocking two props out and burying the deceased.

GRIFFITHS Daniel - 1897 - 24/08/1897 – Age 44 – Collier. Broadoak, Samuel Thomas, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, a bell-stone, 4 feet diameter. Penacillon seam.

GRIFFITHS David - 1890 - 09/06/1890 – Age 44 – Fireman. Cymmer, Cymmer Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fell out of cage while descending with two officials.

GRIFFITHS David - 1891 - 13/11/1891 – Age 26 – Collier. Great Mountain, Great Mountain Colliery Co., Tumble Llanelly, Carmarthen. Fall of piece of coal and clod from top of seam, while wedging the bottom coal. Big vein (anthracite), 6 foot 8 inches thick. Long wall.

GRIFFITHS David - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 36 – Fireman. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

GRIFFITHS David - 1894 - 26/01/1894 – Age 23 – Labourer. Wynstay, Wynstay Collieries Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased, with 14 other men, was descending the shaft in a double decked cage and when about 14 yards from the pit bottom the cage oscillated and touched the walling of the shaft causing the deceased to fall to the pit bottom. 2 killed.

GRIFFITHS David - 1896 - 09/11/1896 – Age 28 – Shunter. Hucknall Torkard No. 2, Hucknall Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased was lowering a waggon and appears to have forgotten another waggon on the same road. This followed slowly down and crushed deceased and he died same day.

GRIFFITHS David J. - 1890 - 16/01/1890 – Age 23 – Collier. Cwmaman, Cwmaman Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (clift, 6 feet x 3 feet x 18 inches thick) where he was turning a stall off a cross heading. One prop was below the part which fell. 6 foot seam. Longwall.

GRIFFITHS David Owen - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 17 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion 290 killed.

GRIFFITHS Enoch - 1899 - 15/08/1899 – Age 32 – Hewer. Brandon, Starkers and Love, Co. Durham. A powder shot, on being fired by the Deputy, William Carr, blew through a parting in the stone and ignited some firedamp in an old place and the effects of this caused the deaths of these six man. Enoch Griffiths and Frank Murphy were killed outright, Ralph Broadbent died on the 17th. and William Carr and George Robson on the 17th and Frank Robson on the 18th.

GRIFFITHS George - 1890 - 17/05/1890 – Age 60 – Collier. Nixon’s Navigation, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (coal 2 foot 9 inches thick) between two parallel slips 4 foot 9 inches apart and 5 foot 6 inches long. There were two rows of props between the coal and gob wall 5.5 foot back but no prop below the portion which fell. 6 foot seam, Longwall.

GRIFFITHS Griffith (injured) - 1894 - 18/07/1894 – Age 60 - Slate getter. New Welsh Slate. He (injured) was standing on the floor of his chamber and his partner was working near the top. A piece of slate rolled down the working face and struck him on the back. 4 weeks off.

GRIFFITHS Griffith (non-fatal) - 1893 - 18/05/1893 – Age 59 – Rockman. New Welsh Slate. A small piece of slate, which he was lifting, fell on to his big toe. 3 weeks off.

GRIFFITHS Griffith - 1891 - 30/06/1891 – Age 21 – Dataler. Bersham, Bersham Colliery Co., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inquiry made. The deceased was throwing dirt into the goaf behind a pack which was partly built when a sudden weight came over the place liberating a large piece of Blackstone which fell from between two props and killed him. 11.20 pm.

GRIFFITHS Griffith - 1896 - 01/09/1896 – Age 36 – Collier. Llanhilleth, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof from slips at his working face fractured his skull causing death. The place was well timbered.

GRIFFITHS Griffith - 1897 - 12/05/1897 – Age 42 - Slate getter. Tynddol Slate Quarry, Blackburn Roberts and Jones, Carnarvon. After retiring to a shelter while blasting was going on, he came out before the signal had been given, that all was right, and he was struck upon the head by a stone projected from a shot at a distance of 84 yard. Killed on the spot.

GRIFFITHS Griffith G. - 1897 - 15/06/1897 – Age 19 - Slate maker. Cloddfa’r Coed Slate Quarry, John Robinson, Carnarvon. Instead of climbing up by a ladder he endeavoured to leave the quarry by a disused path, which he had been warned not to take as it had become dangerous. He slipped and fell 86 feet and was killed.

GRIFFITHS Griffiths - 1894 - 25/07/1894 – Age 54 – Collier. Aberpergwm Pwllfaron Slant, Morgan S Williams, Glyn-Neath, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (clift 9 feet x 2.5 feet x 18 inches thick) close to face of a wide stall in which the roof was irregular. Deceased and his partner, who was also injured by the fall, had been told to secure the stone but failed to do so. Nine feet seam, 11 foot thick, Anthracite.

GRIFFITHS H.J. - 1891 - 25/02/1891 – Age 25 – Collier. Plymouth Works, Hill’s Plymouth Co. Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. While assisting another haulier to lift a tram on the rail, the horse, which had not been detached, started forward, and he was crushed against a cog at the corner of the stall road.

GRIFFITHS Henry (injured) - 1890 - 29/08/1890 – Age 51 – Rockman. Diphwys Casson (slate). He was working down some loose rock with a crowbar when a piece fell towards him and severely injured his left foot which had to be amputated. 30 weeks off.

GRIFFITHS Hugh (injured) - 1894 - 20/07/1894 – Age 48 - Slate getter. Llechwedd (slate). Explosion of charge of gunpowder while ramming in tamping with a brass stemmer. Third and fourth finger and part of his left hand amputated. Sixteen and half weeks off.

GRIFFITHS Isaac - 1892 - 22/02/1892 – Age 35 – Collier. Cambrian Navigation, Thomas Riches and Co., Clydach Vale, Glamorgan. Fall of coal at face dislodge some props and he was fatally injured by their fall.

GRIFFITHS James - 1896 - 02/03/1896 – Age 24 – Drawer. Moss No. 6, Pearson & Knowles Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The full journey on top of jig with scotches went against the Stop Block, which gave way, and the journey running down brow jerked the jig rope which caused a tub to strike the deceased who was at the top of the jig. He succumbed to injuries received on the 4th instant.

GRIFFITHS James - 1899 - 08/03/1899 – Age 15 - Pony driver. Main Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased had instructions to run alongside his pony instead of riding in or on the tubs. He was running alongside a quiet pony, going a quick walk, when he appears have slipped and fallen in front of the tubs which crushed him. The road appeared to he in good order.

GRIFFITHS John (injured) - 1891 - 25/09/1891 – Age 23 – Rockman. Braichgoch (slate). He was engaged in removing a crane, missed his footing and slid down the face of the rock to the next floor. Side and ankle injured. 1 month off.

GRIFFITHS John - 1890 - 06/03/1890 – Age 57 – Labourer. Great Mountain, John Waddell and Sons, Llanon Llanelly, Carmarthen. Crushed by a runaway tram, at bottom of an incline, the tram having been pushed over by the incline man before attaching the rope thereto.

GRIFFITHS John - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Collier. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

GRIFFITHS John - 1891 - 29/01/1891 – Age 18 – Haulier. Nantmelyn, Graig Humphreys and Griffiths, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (clift), "bell," from 3 foot to 4 foot dia. 10 inches thick, in centre close to coal face. One prop discharged. Graig seam, 2 foot 10 inches thick. Pillar and stall.

GRIFFITHS John - 1893 - 28/09/1893 – Age 20 – Shackler. Lower Duffryn, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Crushed between trams and side of road, the tram's having got away from the point where they were supposed to be left fastened by a chain until taken away by hauliers. There must have been some carelessness on the part of the hauliers. Died 29th Sept.

GRIFFITHS John - 1895 - 01/07/1895 – Age 47 – Repairer. Bettisfield, Bettisfield Colliery Co. Ltd., Flint. Inspection made, and inquest attended. They were ripping and repairing the main road and while in the act of setting a pair of timbers a portion of the top roof fell upon them suddenly which they had previously failed to draw down. 2 killed.

GRIFFITHS John - 1895 - 16/03/1895 – Age 48 – Stoneman. East Hetton, Walter Scott Ltd., Co. Durham. Premature explosion of a shot while engaged lighting it up.

GRIFFITHS John - 1897 - 06/12/1897 – Age 58 - Night examiner. Pochin, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. While making his second inspection in one of the main headings, a fall of side took place and fractured his thigh. He died on the 21st December from the injuries. There have been several accidents in the roadways, which should not be the case.

GRIFFITHS John - 1898 - 16/09/1898 – Age 40 – Shackler. Ferndale No. 4, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Appeared to have fallen near a door and then been run over by passing tram. Died after amputation of both legs 26th September.

GRIFFITHS John Henry - 1898 - 08/03/1898 – Age 16 – Labourer. Admiralty, Stone Quarry, W Hill and Co., Portland, Dorset. Crushed between two trucks on the railway incline which he was attempting to cross contrary to warnings by the quarrymen.

GRIFFITHS Joseph - 1892 - 15/12/1892 – Age 59 - Cutting Cogs. Llwynypia No. 1, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Llwynypia, Glamorgan. Fall of side from between two cogs 6.5 feet apart. Died 24th Dec.

GRIFFITHS Joshua - 1896 - 09/08/1896 – Age 20 – Fitter. Dowlais Cardiff, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Caught between a haulage rope and newly erected engine by the giving way of the supports to a sheave while a journey of trams was being run.

GRIFFITHS M.W. - 1896 - 24/11/1896 – Age 17 – Haulier. Ferndale No. 4, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck by a runaway tram, from a parting 160 yards distant and from behind which a bar hook had been removed by some unknown person. (Verdict manslaughter against this person was returned by coroner’s jury).

GRIFFITHS Morgan - 1898 - 22/09/1898 – Age 24 – Haulier. Ferndale No. 5, D Davis and Sons, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on a double parting, in five feet seam, arm of a pair of timbers having been knocked out by tram leaving the rails.

GRIFFITHS R. - 1899 - 17/05/1899 – Age 15 - Asst. haulier. Cambrian No. 2, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road cliff, 12 feet x 4 foot thick, while walking out of main return, two pairs of timber broke and a fall occurred.

GRIFFITHS Richard - 1896 - 01/09/1896 – Age 57 - Asst. repairer. Fochiw, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Fall while clearing rubbish from a fall following the removal of a framing. Road in Rhas Las (Nine feet) Seam.

GRIFFITHS Robert (injured) - 1890 - 25/09/1890 – Age 23 - Hooker on. Oakeley (slate). He was guiding an empty waggon over some points as it was being drawn up an incline at the surface when it turned over onto him. Leg broken. 9 weeks off.

GRIFFITHS Robert - 1898 - 25/11/1898 – Age 18 – Waggoner. Llay Hall, ES Clark, Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. A large stone fell from between two slips near the face of a drawing road, upon the deceased, when he was waiting for the next full tub to take out. The road was propped on each side but not barred.

GRIFFITHS Roger - 1890 - 31/12/1890 – Age 36 - Master haulier. Elliot, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., New Tredegar, Monmouth. Waiting at a bend in engine plane, for journey to come out, he sat down in the inner side of the rope the place of one of the sheaves broke causing the rope to fly to the side of the road and catching his leg, broke it. Blood poisoning set in followed by erysipelas in the other leg from which he died on the 28th January 1891.

GRIFFITHS Samuel - 1890 - 10/03/1890 – Age 50 – Collier. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.

GRIFFITHS Thomas - 1892 - 18/01/1892 – Age 23 – Rider. Ynysfaio, Troedyrhiw Coal Co., Treherbert, Glamorgan. While riding on empty tram, in middle of a full journey, down a steep incline the tail rope broke and the journey ran wild and they were killed by the wreckage at the bottom. 2 killed.

GRIFFITHS Thomas - 1898 - 18/11/1898 – Age 19 – Haulier. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road, clift 15 foot long x 6 foot wide, averaging 22 inches thick, fell as he was passing. A brattice door and 5 props were knocked out by the fall. Four feet seam.

GRIFFITHS W.D. - 1897 - 08/12/1897 – Age 12 - Collier boy. Great Western, Hetty Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fatally injured by a blow from an empty tram, while trams were being changed at parting of stall.

GRIFFITHS W.H. - 1896 - 03/11/1896 – Age 15 - Colliers’ boy. Dynea, Dynea Coal Co. (JL Smith and Co.) Glamorgan. Fall at face clod, 5 foot x 1 foot x 6 inches, which was overhanging and ought to have been taken down. Penygroes seam.

GRIFFITHS William (injured) - 1890 - 10/01/1890 – Age 22 – Rockman. Bryneglwys (slate). He and another man were lowering a block of slate with a winch and they carelessly omitted to use the brake. The load overpowered them and the handle was whirled round striking Griffiths upon the nose. One and a half week off.

GRIFFITHS William (injured) - 1890 - 30/09/1890 – Age 50 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). A loaded sled got off the rails underground and part of the load fell upon Griffiths as he was assisting to replace it on the rails. 8 weeks off.

GRIFFITHS William - 1891 - 07/03/1891 – Age 18 – Haulier. National, National Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Deceased and others were following a journey up engine plane when a hackle opened, five trams ran back on bar-hook, which tumbled the last tram and crushed deceased against side.

GRIFFITHS William - 1892 - 19/09/1892 – Age 15 – Labourer. Bower, W and R Murland, Hollinwood, Lancashire. Crushed by tubs on pit hill, removing a timber of tubs to spoil heap in front. Trying to stop them overpowered. Died 3rd October.

GRIFFITHS William - 1894 - 02/02/1894 – Age 38 – Collier. Blaina No. 3, Griffin John, Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Blaina, Monmouth. Fall of roof at the face of the West Level in the Old Coal. It appears from his own statement that he had fetched his heavy mandril and was just commencing to get the stone down when it fell and injured him. He was a Collier from boyhood and worked several years for this firm.

GRIFFITHS William - 1894 - 23/11/1894 – Age 43 – Packer. Bold, Collin Green Colliery Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. While the deceased was packing, behind the widework face, a stone fell from the roof, while he was in a kneeling position, and crushed him causing his death. There did not appear to have been any neglect.

GROCOTT Leonard - 1897 - 12/08/1897 – Age 29 – Onsetter. Lumpsey (ironstone), Bell Bros. Ltd., North Yorkshire. He was about to lift the snecks of the cage when a piece of stone, weighing about 2.5 lbs., fell down the shaft hit him on the head and killed him.

GROUT Charles - 1890 - 20/12/1890 – Age 27 – Miner. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. A sudden fall of stone took place, knocked out a prop which he neglected to replace.

GROVES George - 1896 - 27/01/1896 - Ferndale Nos 7 & 8, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 57 killed.

GROVES John - 1899 - 30/05/1899 – Age 44 – Pitman. Roman Gravels (metalliferous), Minsterley Mines Ltd., Shropshire. Ladder gave way while he was descending shaft.

GROVES William - 1896 - 11/01/1896 – Age 43 - Wood Labourer. Ansley Hall Brickworks, Ansley Hall Colliery Co., Warwick. He was building a stack of bricks when they rolled over and fatally crushed him.

GRUNDY Edward - 1892 - 23/09/1892 – Age 34 - Night fireman. Garswood Hall, Garswood Hall Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire Inspection and inquiry made. Deceased came up the pit with some lamps to light and to get his supper when in going down again he fastened the gate but must have mistaken the side of the shaft and he fell down the pit. As an official he used the lower landing, which was against the rule. He had three lamps with him lit at the time.

GRUNDY Herbert - 1897 - 05/03/1897 – Age 16 - Horse driver. Southgate, Shire Oaks Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. The two deceased were repairing a roadway and preparing for the timber when a large fall of roof occurred knocking out the timber and killing both persons. 2 killed.

GRUNDY Peter - 1898 - 07/10/1898 – Age 29 – Collier. Shakerley, William Ramsden and Sons, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place from a slip, which might have been seen, one prop would have prevented it.

GRUNDY Thomas - 1896 - 17/11/1896 – Age 37 – Rolleywayman. Wardley, John Bowes and Partners Ltd., Co. Durham. Inquest attended. He sprained his side when assisting with a tub. Apparently a simple accident but deceased was in a precarious state of health at the time. Died January 5th, 1897.

GRUNDY William - 1899 - 16/10/1899 – Age 44 – Brakesman. Brynn Hall, Brynn Hall, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased was a brakes man and was chaining some waggons, with a locomotive, past some points and when in the act of unhooking the chain he stumbled and got run over by the empty wagons.

GULLIFORD Charles - 1890 – 24/11/1890 – Age 14 – Putter boy. Wells Way, Trustees of Countess of Waldegrave, Radstock, Somerset. On reaching the top of a staple pit (about 15 yards) by a ladder, on his way to work, he apparently slipped and fell to the bottom. He was accustomed to the place and was accompanying his father at the time. He died on the 11th of Mar 1891.

GUNNING Worthy - 1899 – 25/03/1899 – Age 25 – Haulier. Tillery, Powells Tillery Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Found dead under the front of two trams which he was taking to the top of a Stapple Pit. It is presumed he fell in front of them and was run over but whether he was riding or not is unknown.

GUTHRIE William - 1899 - 04/10/1899 – Age 25 – Stoneman. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. After having drilled and charged with carbonite and stemmed a hole he assisted the shotfirer to connect it with the battery. The shotfirer came out of the gateway first and seeing another light come out he took it to be deceased's and so fired the shot. It afterwards transpired that it was the deceased's marrow who came out of the place and deceased had been in all the time and was so badly injured that he died on the 6th inst. The shotfirer said he only saw one light in the face when he was in and so thought he heard the deceased man shout ‘right' when the light came out.

GUTTERIDGE John - 1891 - 08/12/1891 – Age 35 – Hewer. Sherburn, Earl of Durham, Durham, Co. Durham. A very large fall of stone took place, without warning, while they were finishing a broken lift in a jud or stook. 3.30 pm. 2 killed.
