GORDON William - 1894 - 08/10/1894 – Age 55 - Pony driver. Corby Craigs No. 4, Dalmellington Iron Co., Dalmellington, Ayrshire. Crushed between front hutch of race and roadside.
GORE George - 1897 - 29/12/1897 – Age 53 - Furnace filler. Kettering Farm Ironstone (quarry), Kettering Iron and Coal Co., Northampton. An empty iron barrow was blown by a high wind, from the descending cage of a skeleton hoist at the furnace. The barrow fell a distance of 44 feet to the ground and struck the deceased. He died the same day.
GORE Margaret - 1891 - 04/05/1891 – Age 14 - Coal cleaner. Blainscough Hall Siding, Blainscough Hall Colliery Co., Coppull, Lancashire. Fatally injured. Arm ran over by a railway waggon that was moved when she was getting down. Inspection and inquiry. Died 8th at Wigan Infirmary. Arm amputated 7th. Attention at the inquest was called to time being scarcely allowed for her to get clear and to the danger of delay in amputating in such cases. Inquest attended. Female.
GORE Thomas - 1895 - 19/10/1895 – Age 20 - Loco. Cleaner. North Blaina, J and W Stone, Blaina, Monmouth. While engaged shunting on branch railway for some unknown reason he got between the buffers of two wagons and in doing so received injuries which resulted fatally. In consequence of the absence of the regular shunter he was working overtime.
GORIE James - 1899 - 27/01/1899 – Age 71 – Signalman. Balognie, CB Balfour, Fife. Deceased was employed as a signal man, a private railway, at a point where after a sharp curve on a falling gradient it passed under an over bridge on the further side of which there was a public footpath. After signalling that the road was clear an order to prevent anyone approaching by the public footpath he crossed the railway in front of some trucks which were being pushed round the
curve and was run down by them and killed instantly.
GORMAN Charles - 1899 - 16/05/1899 – Age 52 – Miner. Cadzow, Cadzow Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was engaged withdrawing the props from under the head coal, it suddenly fell on him.
GORMAN Thomas - 1898 - 23/05/1898 – Age 47 – Hewer. East Hetton, Walter Scott Ltd., Co. Durham. When bringing a pillar back they had got 15 yards of goaf on and a very large stone fell and canted four rows of props out and killed these three men instantly.
GORMAN William - 1897 - 30/04/1897 – Age 19 – Drawer. Bathville, James Wood Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was running inbye, along his drawing road, after taking breakfast and is supposed to have fallen. Death was supposed to have resulted from syncope produced by shock.
GORMLEY John - 1891 - 20/01/1891 – Age 27 – Hewer. Wearmouth, Wearmouth Coal Co., Wearmouth, Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was found on the engine plane under a small fall of stone. Several men had passed the place and had not noticed anything particularly wrong. 10.0 am.
GORMON William - 1899 - 19/01/1899 – Age 22 - Pony driver. Eglinton No. 1, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Found dead under the front hutch of a race of ten full hutches which he was taking out of a level.
GORNAL or GORMAL Richard - 1891 - 05/12/1891 – Age 41 - Iron ore dresser. Crossgates (metalliferous), Askham and Millom Iron Co., Crossgates, Lancashire. The deceased and his mate, in going into their working place, found several sets of timbers out and a large quantity of ore down. Before making the place secure they sent the ore out and left the place. Deceased afterwards returned for an axe when a large fall occurred, burying him. Inspection made and inquest attended. 11.0 am.
GORTON Ralph - 1894 - 22/03/1894 – Age 24 – Drawer. Agecroft, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Pendleton, Lancashire. Struck by chain end of rope, a full tub attached to other end of rope and on a windlass the full tub overpowered deceased and ran down the brow, 51 yards, drawing up the other end of rope which was free, at great speed. Died from fractured skull on 25th.
GORTON Richard - 1899 - 26/01/1899 – Age 65 – Wasteman. Murton, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. While travelling on the engine plane, to his work, he fell down and died from heart disease.

GOUGH Richard - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 60 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.
GOULAY Robert - 1898 - 05/02/1898 – Age 47 – Engineman. Neilston, James Wood Ltd., Stirling. He fell off a scaffold, apparently while tightening up a steam joint.

GOULD Sydney (non-fatal) - 1894 - 14/02/1894 – Age 20 – Miner. East Blue Hills (metalliferous), East Blue Hills Mine Adventurers, St. Agnes, Cornwall. Stones blown into his place from a shot drilled at the other side of a piece of ground. There was carelessness connected with the accident.
GOULD William - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 37 - Asst. timberman. Tymawr, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof near face of stall while clearing a fall. A pair of old timbers, at edge of fall, was accidentally knocked out by deceased throwing some timber towards the face and a large stone resting on the collar fell on him. Five feet seam.

GOULDING James - 1897 - 29/07/1897 – Age 34 – Hewer. Leasingthorne, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. While kirving in a band, 27 inches thick in the seam, he pricked a slip and the stone fell and killed him. He had been warned by the hewer next to him that the stone was dangerous.
GOULDING M. - 1890 - 25/11/1890 – Age 67 – Collier. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A fall of a pot hole, which capped a prop the man had just set under it.

GOURD John (injured) - 1890 - 05/02/1890 – Age 50 – Miner. Phoenix United (metalliferous), Phoenix United Mining Co., Liskeard, Cornwall. A small quantity of decomposed granite fell from the back of the 40 fathom level whilst Gourd and his comrades were engaged in timbering the place and struck the former on the area just above the elbow causing a fracture.

Both men went into some old workings to seek some rails, Gowland carrying a safety lamp and Dick a candle. When near the place they wanted to be and Gowland went in first to see if there was any gas but Dick following in too soon ignited some gas which was lying in the roof at his candle. 2 killed. 6.15 am.

GRAHAM George - 1893 - 28/06/1893 – Age 27 – Hewer. Allerdale, William Allerdale Coal Co. Ltd., Allerdale, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. After firing a shot, in the roof, the deceased began dressing the loose stone when a large stone fell on to him. An examination showed that the stone had fallen from between slips which were not noticed until after the fall.
GRAHAM George - 1899 - 30/12/1899 – Age 30 – Hewer. North Walbottle, North Walbottle Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was hewing in a newly opened longwall face when the first setting of the roof took place causing a sudden fall which canted out six or seven props. The place was well timbered.

Deceased was working in a part of the pit where safety lamps were used and he seems to have contrived to open his lamp and use candles which he had concealed about him and at which the gas ignited. 2.0 pm.

GRAHAM James - 1897 - 22/01/1897 – Age 34 – Fireman. Little Raith, Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. The winding rope broke while deceased were descending the shaft. The rope was made of steel wires and 1.5 inch diameter and had been in use since August 1894. The shaft is 100 fathoms deep and the rope broke 20 fathoms from the cage. The shaft was warm, from the presence of steam pipes. Tests made after the accident gave a breaking strain of 21 tons but torsional tests showed that the quality of wire had much deteriorated. 2 killed.

GRAHAM John - 1897 - 10/12/1897 – Age 39 – Fireman. Hartwoodhill, Shotts Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased entered a longwall place for the purpose of making his second inspection for the day. He crawled under the brushing and had just reached the face when a large stone suddenly fell upon him, killing him instantly.
GRAHAM Joseph - 1898 - 14/11/1898 – Age 58 – Shifter. Medmosley, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. While at work, in the pit, he was seized with an apoplectic fit and died the following morning.
GRAHAM Peter Robert - 1898 - 02/08/1898 – Age 14 – Coupler. Brayton Domain No. 3, Joseph Harris, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. His duty was to make up the set of empty tubs, at the shaft bottom, prior to its being driven away and after he had, on this occasion, coupled the last two together and given the driver the usual signal he attempted to pass between the last two tubs for some purpose or other, and slipping he was crashed against a wooden upright. There was no necessity for him to cross between the tubs.

GRAHAM Thomas - 1890 - 24/05/1890 – Age 21 – Banksman. No. 6 (metalliferous), Cleator Iron Ore Co., Cleator, Cumberland. Crushed by the flywheel of the winding engine. While assisting the engineman to get this engine off the centre the wheel suddenly revolved and carried him into the wheel pit killing him.

GRAHAM William - 1897 - 10/07/1897 – Age 27 – Brusher. Allhallows, Allerdale Coal Co., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Fall of stone. Two other men were with the deceased at the time. It appears a shot had been fired and they were breaking up the stone, for packing, when a large stone fell. The roof had been carefully examined by the men and a deputy after the shot and no danger was apprehended. It was not a place where props were considered necessary but there were plenty at hand if required. The stone, which would weigh nearly one ton and a half came away from an ordinary longwall break thick at one end and tapering to nothing.

GRAINGER Robert - 1898 - 09/12/1898 – Age 16 - Mainroad boy. Cinderhill, Babbington Coal Co., Nottinghamshire. He was found dead on an engine plane but there was no evidence to show how he came by his death. He was probably run over by a train of full tubs.

GRAPPER Benjamin - 1897 - 21/08/1897 – Age 76 – Labourer. Timber Hill Gravel (quarry), Lyme Regis Urban District Council, Dorset. Fall of overhanging ground in a gravel pit. He was excavating gravel improperly and dangerously, with the result which must be expected sooner or later under such circumstances. He worked for a contractor under the Lyme Regis Urban District Council.

GRAVELL W.J. - 1897 - 02/08/1897 – Age 15 - Rope sheave, Glyncorrwg, Glyncorrwg Coal Co., Glamorgan. Found dead on drum of small hauling engine, with rope coiled round his body. He had been working the engine in the absence of the engine man.
GRAVELL William - 1897 - 14/04/1897 – Age 15 - Collier’s boy. Caepompren, H and HE Smart, Carmarthen. Fall of roof at face, a large fall over a cog and two pairs of double timbers. Brasslyd seam.
GRAVES Charles Frederick - 1893 - 21/10/1893 – Age 24 – Shunter. Pleasley, Stanton Iron Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He went between two railway waggons to uncouple them, instead of using the shunting pole, when the engine driver moved the waggons before deceased was clear of the rails. Deceased had a foot fast in the points or would probably have been out from between the waggons. He died the same day.

GRAY Thomas - 1895 - 07/01/1895 – Age 57 – Shifter. Shire Moor, Shire Moor Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inquest attended. He was proceeding to his work underground when it appears he hit his head against a baulk which stunned him. He however went inbye and worked out the shift but he was unable to go to the pit afterwards and died on the 19th July.
GRAY William - 1896 - 17/11/1896 – Age 16 – Helper up. Esh, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co. Durham. He was attempting to push an empty tub up a gradient, that was too heavy for him, the tub ran back and his head was crushed against a prop. Died the following day.
GRAYSON J. - 1897 - 03/03/1897 – Age 59 – Banksman. Tinsley, Tinsley Coal Co., Yorkshire. He was jinneying a full tub, from the pit hill level, to the flat sheets below and forgot to put the chain round the pulley wheel. He was caught and fell with his head on the flat sheets.

A fire broke out, on the main airway of the mine, and developed rapidly so that only six men, including the deputy, out of a total of 41, who were at work beyond the fire, were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.

GREEN Charles - 1892 - 09/03/1892 – Age 47 – Deputy. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott Ltd., Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. While engaged, with another man, drawing chocks out of a jud a large stone fell from a slip in the roof.
GREEN Daniel - 1890 - 24/07/1890 – Age 48 – Collier. Parr No. 1, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. At the inquest he lived in Hardshaw Street, it was heard that he was working and had died from injuries received the Friday before. He was attended by the assistant to Doctor Heywood who stated that death was due to consumption accelerated by inflammation of the leg caused by the accident. Charlotte Williams, sister of the deceased, said he was taken to hospital on 11th. May as he had a piece of stone between his knee and his trousers and the wound had gathered. The Doctor thought that this condition had accelerated his death. It was stated that the man was a member of the Miners’ Association. The corner said that it was s an unsatisfactory case and the cause of death could not be stated exactly. The jury returned a verdict of Accidental Death.

GREEN George - 1894 - 12/04/1894 – Age 58 – Stoneman. Cowpen, Mill Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Cowpen, Northumberland. Inquest attended. The chargeman had examined and then sent the deceased in, to make the place safer, by setting props and when doing so a stone fell and killed him.

GREEN James - 1893 - 02/08/1893 – Age 56 – Deputy. Grinkle (metalliferous), Palmer and Co. Ltd., Mulgrave, Yorkshire. While barring down some loose top stone the bar slipped and he felt the stone falling, which caught him and fractured his skull.
GREEN James - 1895 - 11/07/1895 – Age 49 – Stoneman. Eppleton, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Eppleton, Co. Durham. While moving his tub his head caught a plank which knocked him down and a fall of stone took place striking his head.

GREEN James - 1897 - 13/05/1897 – Age 40 – Collier. Birley, East Sheffield Coal Co., South Yorkshire. He died from angina pectoris but an inquest was held and the jury returned a verdict that his death was accelerated by inflammation of the second toe of his left foot supervening upon his having accidentally injured that toe some time previously in the mine. No details of the accident could be ascertained. He was supposed to have been injured on either 14th April or 13th May. He died on 27th August.

GREENER John C. - 1893 - 19/05/1893 – Age 16 – Driver. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Died from rupture of one of the pulmonary arteries caused by a strain while lifting a tub on the way on 5th August 1892.
GREENER W.J. - 1897 - 01/02/1897 – Age 44 – Manager. Pemberton, J Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. While proceeding along the main and tail rope haulage level, in the Pemberton Four Feet Mine, with the undermanager, the deceased was fatally injured by being run into by the full journey of tubs and the undermanager seriously injured before they were able to get to a refuge hole. It was a rule to have a red lamp in front of every journey but the light had been jerked out, and the jury, at the place of the inquiry, desired to offer the expression that in their opinion the lamp tended to do more harm than good.
