SEGGIE John - 1899 - 04/04/1899 – Age 44 – Machineman. Craignair Granite Quarry, DH and J Newall, Kirkcudbright. While oiling the elevating machinery of the stone crusher he was caught by the buckets and killed.
SELFE Robert - 1892 - 29/07/1892 – Age 58 – Hewer. Dean Lane, Bedminster Coal Co., Bristol, Gloucester. A fall, infront of the face struck a prop and knocked it over, against him, and caused his death. The place was exceptionally high and as a matter of fact he stepped into the danger area when intending to stand clear in a safe place.

SELWAY Charles D. - 1893 - 20/12/1893 – Age 16 – Collier. Griffin No. 3, J Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Blaina, Monmouth. He was riding on the foot board of a Colliers train, going to work, and on arrival at the Colliery he got crushed against the platform.
SEMPLE Gabriel - 1896 - 03/03/1896 – Age 32 – Collier. Earnock, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof stone in stooping. He apparently was working coal off the side pillar from an old road in advance of his working face.

SEMPLE James - 1895 – 30/08/1895 – Age 14 – Bogie-runner. Bredisholm No. 3, Glasgow Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. The hutches, he was conveying along a haulage road, left the rails knocked out a prop and the roof fell on him.

SENOGLES William - 1897 – 10/05/1897. Snaefell Lead, Snaefell Lead Mining Co. Ltd., Isle of Man. On descending the shaft, to go to their work on a Monday morning, they were overcome by carbonic oxide generated by an underground fire, of which they were wholly unaware. The timber, in a level, had taken fire accidentally probably from a lighted candle end stuck up against it on the previous Saturday. 19 killed and 5 injured of whom 1 died 26th May.
SETTLE Joseph (injured) - 1891 – 24/12/1891 – Age 40 – Miner. Stopes No. 1, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Little Lever, Lancashire. Injured by falling to a depth of about 3 yards off the pit brow in a fog. Inspection and inquiry.
SEVER Aaron - 1894 – 29/09/1894 – Age 45 – Stallman. Alfreton, Blackwell Colliery Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased stood back in the goaf to allow a loaded tub to pass when the roof fell upon him. Died next day.
SEVERNS Thomas - 1895 – 15/02/1895 – Age 23 – Holer. Markham No. 1, Staveley Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Reported to have received a slight injury on the 6th, but the doctor certified that death was due to natural causes. No inquest was held.
SEWARD W. - 1899 – 07/10/1899 – Age 42 – Asst. repairer. Deep Navigation, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on the road, a small stone struck his leg, causing a very slight wound. Blood poisoning set in and he died Dec. 29th.
SEWELL James - 1892 – 31/05/1892 – Age 45 – Timberman. Doclcoath (metalliferous), Doclcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. The breakage of the winding engine pinion wheel shafts in the bearing, allowed the gig, in which the men were ascending, to run back from the 245 to the 375 fathom level. The brake rendered more or less by a portion of the wheel falling among the levers. 4 injured.

SEWELL Robert - 1894 – 01/03/1894 – Age 17 – Drawer. Westrigg, James Wood Ltd., Lanarkshire. Finger injured by fall of stone. Died from inflammation of the kidneys. Not comprised.
SEXTON Alfred - 1890 – 26/03/1890 – Age 27 – Deputy. Wyken, Wyken Colliery Co., Coventry, Warwick. Runaway tubs knocked out a prop which struck and fatally injured him. The horse, which had been drawing the tubs, was in sling gears and had no control over the tubs when coming down an inclined roadway.

SHAKESPEARE Enock - 1899 – 17/08/1899 – Age 56 – Stallman. Clifton, Clifton Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was withdrawing timber from the goaf when the falling stone ran out two other props and allowed the roof to fall upon him. He appeared to have been using a pick to get the timber out instead of a ringer and chain, as required by the Special Rules.
SHAND David (non-fatal) - 1893 – 30/06/1893 – Age 28 – Miner. Lochgelly, Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Fall at face.
SHANLEY Edward - 1896 – 03/07/1896 – Age 25 – Dataller. Elms, Wigan Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased was roofing down, and had not secured sufficiently the sides by bars when a portion gave way and fell upon him. The fireman had inspected the place and had not drawn his attention to the sides.

He was caught by some empty waggons which were being shunted. The whistle was blown but deceased apparently did not notice it.

SHARP Frederick - 1894 - 01/02/1894 – Age 21 – Shunter. Griff, Griff Colliery Co., Nuneaton, Warwick. Deceased was attempting to shunt the empty waggons when he was run over. Fly shunting was being done, contrary to the rules of the Colliery. He died the same day.
SHARP George - 1897 - 27/08/1897 – Age 19 - Loco. Fireman. Lindal Moor Iron Ore, Harrison Ainslie and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased and another man were loading a barrel of grease at a specially constructed platform. The bottom of the waggon and the platform was practically level and the proper method was to simply roll the barrel out. Instead of using the planks provided for the purpose they utilised the rails of a loose fence which were near to hand. The rails were too slender and they bent causing the barrel to roll back on deceased. He died the following day.

SHARP Thomas - 1891 - 25/06/1891 – Age 39 – Bricksetter. King Sinking, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased men had just finished their meals and were descending the shaft, to resume their work, when in the descent it is supposed that the hoppet struck a bearer in the shaft and overturned, the four men falling to the bottom, a distance of about 60 yards. The engineman appears to have applied his brake too suddenly this would probably have the effect of chucking the hoppet and causing it to get out the of the centre of the shaft. 4 killed. 6.15 pm.

SHAW George - 1893 - 23/11/1893 – Age 23 – Shifter. Burnhope, UA Ritson, Lanchester, Co.Durham. While descending the Fell pit the winding rope broke, when they had got about 80 yards from the surface, and they all fell to the bottom of the pit, about 150 yards. 4 killed.

SHAW James - 1892 - 25/10/1892 – Age 19 – Drawer. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was drawing in a road, which was getting low through the result of crush, and in taking a loaded tub out he knocked a bar down and the roof fell on him. No Previous complaint had been made that the bars were too low. Died 28th Oct.
SHAW James - 1899 - 08/11/1899 – Age 65 – Quarryman. Woodend Limestone Quarry, TF Tyson and Sons, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was barring down a loose stone, about 3 cwt from a ledge 2 feet above the quarry floor. No one actually witnessed the accident but apparently the stone slipped and the stone rolled on to him. A fatal result was not anticipated but he died the week after.

SHAW John - 1897 - 09/10/1897 – Age 28 – Collier. Wrexham & Acton, Wrexham & Acton Collieries Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased had been working at the face of Wickett, which was propped on each side of the road, when he came back about six yards from the face and was testing the roof with his pick, on the lower side of the props, when a stone fell upon him from between two slips in the roof.

SHAW Joseph - 1890 - 20/06/1890 – Age 25 - Hooker on. Orrell, Orrell Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was working at a mouthing, part way down, and whilst pulling an empty tub out of the cage the latter started suddenly and the deceased fell down the pit. The evidence was conflicting as to whether the signal had been given or not.

SHAW Joseph - 1898 - 19/04/1898 – Age 21 – Holer. Whitwick No. 5, Whitwick Colliery Co., Leicester. A fire broke out on the main airway of the mine and developed so rapidly that only six men, including the deputy, got out of a total of 41, who were at work beyond the fire were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.
SHAW Joseph - 1899 - 21/07/1899 – Age 60 – Quarryman. Stainton Limestone Quarry, Barrow Haematite Steel Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was boring a pop hole in a loose block of limestone when another stone, which was resting on the first mentioned block, canted over. The man fell in trying to get out of the way and the stone rolled on his head.
SHAW Matthew - 1892 - 17/02/1892 – Age 50 – Hewer. Whitburn, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Whitburn, Co.Durham. Inspection made and Inquest attended. He was busy nicking when a stone fell without warning from a slippery parting.

SHEEN Thomas - 1890 – 14/05/1890 – Age 14 – Colliers’ boy. Prince of Wales, Abercarn Coal Co. Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. Fall of roof near the face. The stone fell between couplings which were from 3 to 3.5 feet apart and it appears to have been due to a weight having come on the place.
SHEEVRING William - 1893 - 18/11/1893 – Age 32 – Quarryman. Corsham Down (metalliferous), Yockney and Co., Corsham, Wiltshire. Fall of roof or ceiling, 12 feet x 7 feet x 10 to 20 inches thick. The stone was loose on three sides and the top, and broke off at the remaining one. The men in these stone mines, as well as gangers and foremen, frequently trust the visible joints to an undesirable extent. They allege that they find, by long experience, that the beds sink and lock themselves quite safely after a short time.

SHELL Henry - 1894 – 25/01/1894 – Age 24 – Asst. hitcher. Ferndale No. 3, D Davis and Son Ltd., Ferndale, Glamorgan. While crossing the shaft bottom, from one side of the shaft to the other, the descending cage came down on them. He died in about two hours. Breach of Special Rules.

Deceased was riding on a clutch bogie, attached to a set of tubs, when it got off the way and threw him before the tubs, killing him instantly. 2.0 pm.

SHEPHERD Thomas - 1896 – 24/11/1896 – Age 37 – Hewer. Washington, Washington Coal Co. Ltd., Washington, Co.Durham. Inquest attended. Deceased, and his marrow, were working in a broken jud. At the commencement of the shift the deputy had examined the place, and timbered it with chocks props and planks. After working for some time the men examined the roof and saw a slip across the face. They set a prop and headtree and were making room to set an end prop when the stone fell.

SHEPPARD William - 1897 - 28/10/1897 – Age 64 – Shifter. Cowpen, Isabella Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inquest attended. He was ridding a shot when his fingers were caught by a stone on the tub top. Blood poisoning set in and he died on November 9th.
SHERIDAN Thomas - 1896 - 24/04/1896 – Age 32 – Drawer. Nook, Astley and Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in shunt, 20 yards from the working place. He was pulling down the roof when weighting commenced. The collier ought not to have permitted drawer to do this.

SHERRAT Elijah (injured) - 1894 - 12/05/1894 – Age 67 – Engineman. Whitfield, Chatterley Whitfield Collieries Ltd., Tunstall, Staffordshire. Legs crushed while ascending the shaft. He stumbled while getting into the cage and was drawn up with his leg out.
SHERRATT John - 1898 - 02/12/1898 – Age 47 – Collier. Sneyd No. 2, Snyed Colliery and Brickworks Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof at working face in Holly Lane Seam. The stone which fell was wedge-shaped, 2 feet 6 inches at wide end, and came from between two smooth slips which had not been detected. The place was timbered with posts, 4.5 feet apart, and there was loose timber at hand.

He was attempting to close the tip door of a truck, partly filled by holding a plank against the door and allowing another truck to pull it down a gradient against it, the plank broke through the end of the last truck and Sherratt was crushed between the buffers.

Deceased was driving two full tubs outbye when the pony, by some means was started, rushed away and he fell off the limbers and the tubs passing over him causing such severe injuries that he died within three hours of the accident occurring.

SHIPLEY Edward - 1894 - 18/07/1894 – Age 52 - Master shifter. Clara Vale, Stella Coal Co., Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. As he was walking from an inset to the onsetter at the bottom, his head was caught by the descending cage. There was no reason why he should have been in such a position as there was a special signal between the seams.

SHIPMAN Harry - 1899 - 15/09/1899 – Age 16 - Horse driver. St. John’s, Staveley Silkstone Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was found dead in front of a train of three full tubs and he appeared to have fallen in front of them and to have been dragged several yards and fatally crushed.
SHIPPEN Henry - 1890 - 16/07/1890 – Age 38 – Stoneman. Stargate, Stella Coal Co., Co.Durham. A shot had not exploded and after waiting 15 mins he returned to the place when the report of a shot was heard and he was found dead. 12.15 am.
SHIPPERLEY Charles - 1896 - 15/10/1896 – Age 44 – Brickmaker. Gayton Clay, Northamptonshire Brick and Tile Co., Northampton. He appears to have been attempting to put a belt upon a revolving shaft and got caught between the strap and the moving machinery. He died same day.
SHIRE Edward - 1898 - 10/11/1898 – Age 32 – Ripper. Llwynypia No. 3, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road, strong clift, from between three slips while it was being timbered after ripping. No. 3 Rhondda seam.

SHOOTER Arthur - 1894 - 21/05/1894 – Age 29 – Dayman. Selston, Barber Walker and Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Deceased was getting down overhanging coal when it fell upon him.
SHOPLAND William - 1898 - 07/12/1898 – Age 54 - Slope cleaner. Kay’s Slope, Blaenavon Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He appears to have slipped when entering a manhole in the slope and was caught by the 4th or 5th tram of a passing full journey and dragged to the mouth of the stope, about 200 yards, before the rider or overman who were on the journey became aware of his having been entangled.
SHORE Walter - 1898 - 25/10/1898 – Age 44 – Hewer. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co., Ashington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was kirving, when a stone fell from between a hitch (of which he was aware) and a slip. Ordinary precautions, as to timbering appeared to have been taken. He died on December 10th.
SHORROCK David (injured) - 1891 - 20/01/1891 – Age 39 – Sinker. Cranberry Lane Sinking, Ralph Entwistle and Co. Ltd. Over Darwin, Lancashire. Eye cut by a piece of stone that flew off when another person was dressing the side of the shaft Inspection and inquiry.
SHORT Alexander - 1898 - 08/012/1898 – Age 37 – Deputy. South Hetton, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. They were drawing a jud when a large stone, 20 feet long and 5 feet wide by 18 inches thick, fell away from a slip in the roof and killed them both. The slip was not visible before the stone fell. 2 killed.
SHORT George - 1892 - 25/02/1892 – Age 51 – Inclineman. Welton Hill, Welton Hill Colliery Co. (WH Beauchamp), Radstock, Somerset. Fall of roof at the top of a self-acting incline. The stone was alleged to have been considered unsafe by some of the men who worked up the incline but they failed until after the accident, to express their opinions to any of the officials who allege that they thought it was safe and who were supported at the inquest by the opinions of other men working up the same incline.
SHORT George - 1898 - 17/10/1898 – Age 45 – Quarryman. Westoning Clay Quarry, BJ Forder and Son, Bedford. He was getting clay when a piece fell from the face and broke his leg. The leg was afterwards amputated but it failed to save his life. He died on 11th November.

The deceased was working with his father and was riding on the limmers while the father was in the tub, going to a certain working place. Somehow the deceased got his head fast between a baulk and the tub top and on being released was found to be dead.

SHREAD Alfred - 1890 - 16/07/1890 – Age 45 – Bricklayer. Hockley Hall No. 4, Hockley Hall Colliery Co., Tamworth, Staffordshire. Whilst assisting bricklayers to build an arch, near the pit bottom, the centres gave way and the arch fell in fatally crushing him.
SHRIEVES H. - 1898 - 03/02/1898 – Age 60 – Engineer. Farrington, Farrington Collieries Co. Ltd., Somerset. He had been sent, by a firm of engineers, to superintend the fixing of a new pump and while steam was being turned on, from the surface, the rush of condensed water caused one of the joints to give way resulting in his being scalded on the hands and face. He died on the 6th.

SIMM Thomas - 1891 – 14/08/1891 – Age 19 – Drawer. Meadows, Lamb and Moore, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased was killed by a large fall from the side of a main roadway where it was considered no timber was required. The road was in strong grey metal. 9.45 am.
