ELLIS Ernest (non-fatal) - 1892 - 10/10/1892 – Age 14 – Trammer. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mine, Adventurers, St. Just, Cornwall. He slipped and his head struck against the rail and train wheel.

ELLIS F. - 1893 - 17/04/1893 – Age 20 – Collier. Warren Vale, J and J Charlesworth, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Injured by tubs.

ELLIS J. - 1896 - 01/05/1896 – Age 55 – Sawyer. Wrenthorpe, D Micklethwaite and Co., Yorkshire. When cutting timber with a circular saw a piece flew back and struck him on the head.

ELLIS J. - 1899 - 19/10/1899 – Age 15 – Driver. Darfield Main, Mitchell Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Was driving horse with four full tubs when through some cause (unknown) he fell and was run over.

ELLIS James - 1894 - 24/01/1894 – Age 30 – Labourer. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mine Adventurers, St. Just, Cornwall. In order to ascertain the cause of a defect in an improvised boiler feed pump, which he and others were working by hand, he loosened one of the valve covers, whereupon steam and hot water flew out and scalded him so severely that he died from the effects 4th Feb.

ELLIS John (injured) - 1894 - 10/12/1894 – Age 50 – Collier. Shelton No. 3 Racecourse, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Hanley, Staffordshire. Fall of stone from working face in Pennystone Seam. Leg broke and back bruised.

ELLIS John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 01/03/1893 – Age 57 – Miner. Minera (metalliferous). He was stepping from one large stone to another and caught his leg between them, this caused him to fall and fracture one of the bones of the left leg. 51 weeks off.

ELLIS John - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 36. Coombs, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas 139 killed.

ELLIS John - 1898 - 07/11/1898 – Age 48 – Ripper. Elm, G Watkinson and Sons Ltd., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was engaged repairing roadways and when in the act of putting some loosened stones down from the roof more came than he expected and he was crushed against a tub.

ELLIS Joseph - 1897 - 14/01/1897 – Age 30 – Miner. Broxburn, Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was mending the holing of shale in which two shots had just been fired when it fell over on him the shale was not spragged.

ELLIS Owen (injured) - 1892 - 23/01/1892 – Age 56 – Quarryman. Llechwedd (Slate). Put his foot into the wheel used for reversing the sawing table and broke a small bone in his leg. 9 weeks off.

ELLIS Owen - 1894 - 28/01/1894 – Age 42 – Slate getter. Beryneglwys (slate). He was in the act of climbing 6 feet down an inclined shaft in order to release a block of slate which had caught on a ledge while it was being lowered with a winch. His chain slipped off supporting peg and he fell to the bottom of the shaft a distance of about 50 feet. It was ascertained after the accident that the supporting peg had been struck by the block of slate and the chain therefore loosened.

ELLIS Reuben - 1891 - 28/07/1891 – Age 29 – Stallman. Blackwell A, Lowmain Blackwell Colliery Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was getting coal when the roof fell upon him. 11.15 am.

ELLIS Richard - 1893 - 27/11/1893 – Age 54 – Foreman. West Cannock, West Cannock Colliery Co., Hednesford, Staffordshire. Crushed between two loaded trucks.

ELLIS Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 31/05/1890 – Age 21 – Miner. Maen Offeren (slate). Fall of 10 feet from the ledge of rock upon which he was standing giving way under him. He examined it and considered it safe. 6 weeks off.

ELLIS Thomas (injured) - 1894 - 11/04/1894 – Age 36 – Collier. Shelton Deep, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Hanley, Staffordshire. Fall of roof at working face in Holly Lane Seam. Thigh broken.

ELLIS Thomas (non-fatal) - 1893 - 07/04/1893 – Age 19 – Miner. Leven, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Fall of coal. 86 days off.

ELLIS Thomas - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 32. Coombs, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 139 killed.

ELLIS Thomas - 1893 - 10/01/1893 – Age 36 – Miner. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), Thomas Bolitho Sons and Others, St. Just, Cornwall. Irruption of water from Old Wheal Drea workings which belong to the same mine. The plan being inaccurate misled the agent as regards the relative position of the workings. 20 killed.

ELLIS Thomas O. - 1894 - 05/11/1894 – Age 31 – Miner. Bryneglwys (slate). Unexpected fall of several hundred tons of rock from the roof of the chamber in which he was working. The roof was about 30 feet above him and quite out of reach.

ELLIS William - 1892 - 05/02/1892 – Age 66 – Rockman. New Welsh Slate. Fall of rock from the roof of the chamber in which they were working. 2 killed.

ELLIS William - 1893 - 04/07/1893 – Age 60. Coombs, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas 139 killed.

ELLISON J. - 1892 - 21/10/1892 – Age 20 – Trammer. Norfolk, Newton Chambers and Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of stone. Died 9th Nov.

ELLISON John - 1893 - 17/03/1893 – Age 21 – Putter. Prudhoe, Mickley Coal Co., Prudhoe, Northumberland. Inquest attended. Deceased was bringing a full tub from the face to the flat and he was being followed by another putter who, although having a drag in the wheel, lost control of the tub which ran against the deceased killing him instantly. It is presumed that on starting the drag in the second tubs wheel was not far enough in and gradually worked out as the tub was in motion.

ELLISON Robert - 1896 - 26/03/1896 – Age 16 – Driver. Hedley Park, Mickley Coal Co., Northumberland. Inquest attended. Another driver was driving too fast and ran his tubs against those where deceased was standing and crushed him against the wall side. Died August 3rd.

ELLISON Thomas - 1894 - 11/01/1894 – Age 24 – Collier. Nook, Astley and Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Tyldesley, Lancashire. Fall of roof in waste. Taking out back prop alone, stone came from a pronounced break, 6 feet long x 2 feet thick.

ELLISON Thomas - 1898 - 13/01/1898 – Age 52 – Collier. Douglas Bank, Rose Bridge & Douglas Bank Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was working at the end of the longwall face, when a stone fell upon him, from the roof from between slips, capping two props and crushing the deceased. The fireman had examined the place about an hour previous to the accident and considered it safe.

ELLISON Thomas Henry - 1898 - 28/11/1898 – Age 35 - Engine tenter. Palmerston Brickworks Quarry, Manchester Brick and Building Co., Lancashire. Struck by belting when stopping engine. No fence.

ELSBY John - 1895 - 14/01/1895 – Age 47 – Contractor. Audley, W Rigby and Co., Audley, Staffordshire. Irruption of water from old working. 77 killed.

ELSON Joseph - 1891 – 07/08/1891 – Age 30 – Hooker. Madeley Wood, Shaws Madeley Wood Co., Madeley, Staffordshire. Fell down shaft from upper hooking place.

ELSTON Samuel - 1890 – 23/09/1890 – Age 48 – Repairer. Norths’ Navigation, Norths’ Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Maesteg, Glamorgan. While riding inbye on engine plane a tram left the rails at the junction of a road knocked out some timbers and the roof fell upon him.

ELTRINGHAM Henry - 1891 - 29/01/1891 – Age 35 – Hewer. Rock, Rock Colliery Co., Spennymoor Co. Durham. While walking outbye and near the shaft he fell down and died, it is supposed from heart disease.

ELVIN H. - 1894 - 07/11/1894 – Age 27 – Sinker. Acton Hall, Acton Hall Coal Co., Pontefract, Yorkshire. Injured while drilling a shot.

ELVIS James - 1896 - 11/03/1896 – Age 36 – Labourer. Ferndale No. 6, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. An excavation for the purpose of underpinning the winding engine, the bed suddenly collapsed while the deceased and five other men were working in it.

EMANUEL D. - 1899 - 20/09/1899 – Age 13 – Doorboy. Pont Henry, Pont Henry Colliery Co. Ltd., Carmarthen. Fatally injured by tram wheel as journey was passing the door which deceased attended. Died 13th Oct.

EMANUEL John - 1894 - 20/03/1894 – Age 33 – Timberman. Merthyr Vale No. 2, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Merthyr Vale, Glamorgan. Injured slightly by fall of side while walking outbye at end of shift. Died 24th Mar. Nine feet seam.

EMANUEL Thomas - 1893 - 28/02/1893 – Age 27 – Haulier. Harris’ Navigation, Deep Navigation Collieries Ltd., Treharris, Glamorgan. Died on 10th March from lockjaw resulting from injuries to his hand while spragging a tram wheel.

EMERY Edward - 1893 - 07/02/1893 – Age 36 – Brancher. New Rock, New Rock Coal Co., Radstock, Somerset. He was filling squibs, preparatory to blasting, and while so engaged sitting with two or three of his comrades a spark flew from one of their candles into the powder and ignited it. One of the others was also injured but he recovered.

EMERY George - 1899 - 29/11/1899 – Age 58 – Stoneman. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott Ltd., Co. Durham. He was in the act of drilling a hole into a stone to get it down when it fell away and killed him.

EMERY Tom Emerson - 1897 - 09/11/1897 – Age 14 – Driver. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott Ltd., Co. Durham. He was crushing past a tub and prop when the pony moved and his head was crushed.

EMERY William - 1893 - 09/02/1893 – Age 18 – Putter. Littleburn, North Brancepeth Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. He was hewing coal from the side of a road where he had no business and a large stone fell upon him.

EMETT Frederick - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 19 - Door boy. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

EMMERSON John - 1894 - 07/04/1894 – Age 35 – Hewer. North Bitchburn, North Bitchburn Coal Co. Ltd., Crook, Co. Durham. Severe injuries to body by fall of stone. Died on the 9th.

EMMERSON Joseph - 1893 - 22/07/1893 – Age 23 – Stoneman. Sacriston, Charlaw Coal Co. Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. Severe injuries to head by fall of stone.

ENDESBY O. - 1898 - 28/11/1898 – Age 50 - Stone getter. Thorpe Sandstone Quarry, G Armitage and Son, Yorkshire. Fall of ground from place beyond his control. 2 killed.

ENERBY Albert - 1891 - 06/07/1891 – Age 21 – Labourer. Moorgreen, Barber Walker and Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Returning from work and walking along the branch railway, he was run over by a train of empty trucks. 4.15 pm.

ENGLAND Albert - 1895 - 19/04/1895 – Age 22 – Dayman. Swanwick, CRP Morewood, Derbyshire. Fall of Coal. Deceased sat under some coal which was holed and knocked a sprag out with a hammer when the coal fell and killed him.

ENGLAND Charles - 1894 - 14/01/1894 – Age 34 – Engineman. Elliot, New Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. He attended a pumping engine situated in no offset from the side of the West Elliot Shaft 180 yards from the bottom. In consequence of the breakage of the condensers motion bar an escape into the engine room occurred which caused his death.

ENGLAND Willoughby - 1899 - 07/04/1899 – Age 14 - Horse driver. Clay Cross No. 7, Clay Cross Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was riding on the limmers or iron shafts, by which the horse is attached to the tubs, when from some unexplained cause the shafts broke and deceased fell off and was crushed by the tubs.

ENGLISH Alexander - 1890 - 23/08/1890 – Age 13 - Pony driver. Drumpeller Nos. 3 & 4, Summerlee and Mossend Iron and Steel Co., Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Supposed to have fallen and got jammed between hutches.

ENGLISH James - 1895 - 11/11/1895 – Age 22 – Runrider. Auckland Park, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Auckland, Co. Durham. While riding on a set of tubs he was reaching towards the signal wire and caught his head between the roof and the top of tub.

ENGLISH John George - 1898 - 22/08/1898 – Age 14 – Driver. Wearmouth, Wearmouth Coal Co. Ltd., Wearmouth, Co. Durham. Inquest attended. Being longer than usual, in coming to the flat a putter went in search of him and found him sitting on the limbers with his skull crushed between a balk and the timber. The timber was six inches clear above the top of the tub.

ENOCH John - 1894 - 18/12/1894 – Age 41 – Hitcher. Ferndale No. 2, D Davis and Son Ltd., Ferndale, Glamorgan. While crossing the shaft bottom, when cages were in motion, the cage descended on him and crushed him. Breach of Rules.

ENOS Staton - 1890 - 18/04/1890 – Age 33 – Stallman. Renishaw Park No. 1, J and G Wells Ltd., Eckington, Derbyshire. Fall of roof whilst wedging it down for the purpose of repairing the roadway.

ENSOR Henry - 1893 - 26/01/1893 – Age 32 – Dataler. Grassmoor No. 1 Tupton Coal, Grassmoor Colliery Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Was kicked on the head by a horse. Died 30th.

ENTWISTLE John (injured) - 1890 - 24/09/1890 – Age 38 – Miner. Scout Moor Engine Drift, Executors of Lawrence Duckworth, Shuttleworth, Lancashire. Injured by his shot getting ignited as he was preparing the slow match.

ENTWISTLE John - 1892 - 16/12/1892 – Age 29 – Collier. Snow Hill, Darcy Lever Coal Co., Darcy Lever, Lancashire. Fall of roof and coal, pulling coals down when coals fell, they brought down roof coal and dirt.

ENTWISTLE John - 1895 - 20/04/1895 – Age 53 – Dataller. Wharton Hall, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Alleged to have sprained himself on the 20th. Died on 19th from inflammation of the lungs, not proved to have arisen from the accident.

ENTWISTLE Joseph - 1896 - 04/11/1896 – Age 15 - Taker off. Haslingden Grane, Grane Brisk Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Slipped off cam wheel of brick press riding on the wheel.

ENTWISTLE Thomas. - 1893 - 21/07/1893 – Age 43 – Collier. Brackley Bridgewater Trustees, Middle Hulton, Lancashire. Knocked his head against a bar, 4 feet from floor, as he was walking in to his work affected the branches. Accident 6th Oct. 1892. Death 21st July 1895.

ENYON Benjamin - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 58 – Shackler. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

ENYON William - 1894 - 01/11/1894 – Age 22 - Asst. repairer. Lewis Merthyr Hafod, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on main road Four feet seam. Deceased and others were securing some timbers at the edge of a fall, which they had just cleared, when a further large fall occurred discharging four pairs of timbers upon him.

ERRINGTON Henry - 1892 - 16/08/1892 – Age 67 – Miner. Woodend No. 11 (metalliferous), Sir James Bain and Co., Woodend, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had fired three shots and was engaged in getting down the ore when a large piece fell from the face causing injuries from which he died on the 21st of the month.

ERRINGTON John - 1897 - 23/04/1897 – Age 54 – Hewer. South Pontop, UA Ritson, Co. Durham. Crushed between tubs and side, and cut about head and body by being caught by driver's set. There was plenty of room by the side of the way. Died on September 18th.

ERRINGTON John - 1898 - 22/01/1898 – Age 79 – Shifter. Roddymoor, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co. Durham. Died today from concussion of the brain and cardiac syncope, alleged to have been caused by tripping against a rail in the pit but there was no evidence to prove this and the jury turned an open verdict.

ERSKINE Hugh - 1899 - 27/12/1899 – Age 39 – Miner. Ingliston oil shale, Youngs Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased and two others worked in a room which was stripping a fault. When making his statutory inspection the fireman found a quantity of gas at the face and warned the miners not to enter the place until he had cleared it out. He entered the place alone and proceeded to waft out the gas with a piece of canvas. Deceased went in, in the dark, to speak to him, others shortly afterwards lifted a canvas screen and entered the place with naked lights. A violent explosion occurred whereby the whole four were severely burned. Deceased succumbed eight days afterwards.

ERSKINE Peter (non-fatal) - 1894 - 01/06/1894 – Age 21 – Miner. Callendar, Callendar Coal Co., Stirling. Fall of stone. Did not return to Colliery.

ERSKINE William (non-fatal) - 1892 - 07/10/1892 – Age 24 – Collier. Shieldhill, Carron Co., Stirling. Fell down stair pit. 84 days off.

ESCOTT John - 1896 - 13/05/1896 – Age 33 – Collier. Abergorky, Burnyeat Brown and Co., Glamorgan. Fall at face. Died 21st May. Four feet seam.

ETHERINGTON E. - 1896 - 21/05/1896 – Age 17 – Driver. Spring Gardens, Fearnley Garforth, Yorkshire. He was riding on full corf and in getting down fell against a stone and broke his neck.

EVA John (non-fatal) - 1892 - 20/09/1892 – Age 34 – Miner. South Condurrow (metalliferous), South Condurrow Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Fall of ground from the hanging wall.

EVA Stephen (injured) - 1890 - 05/12/1890 – Age 19 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Whilst shifting a large rock, after blasting, in a stope at the 88 fathom level it split into two parts one of which fell on Eva's knee cutting and bruising it rather severely.

EVA Thomas - 1897 - 09/01/1897 – Age 21 - Asst. shaftsman. Dolcoath Tin. Dolcoath Mine Ltd., Cornwall. Fell about 15 fathoms from a ladder in the Old Sump Shaft, up which he had climbed to the 200 fathom level to grease the rolls. He was picked up dead directly afterwards by his comrades.

EVANS Albert - 1896 - 04/08/1896 – Age 25 – Collier. Weigh Fawr, Philip Richard, Glamorgan. Fall at face, coal from rise side of a 15 feet wide dip, 16 inches per yard. Hughes ve inches.

EVANS Anthony - 1890 - 23/10/1890 – Age 15 - Incline boy. Cwmbach, Cwmbach Coal Co., Swansea, Glamorgan. He pushed three trams on to a steep incline before they were attached to the rope and was dragged down about 40 yards and crushed to death.

EVANS B. - 1899 - 09/08/1899 – Age 25 – Haulier. Ynyshir Steam, Ynyshir Steam Coal Co., Glamorgan. Horse ran away while the deceased and another haulier were riding on the front of the tram and a third man in the tram. Deceased's first day at this colliery.

EVANS Benjamin - 1896 - 06/03/1896 – Age 15 - Colliers’ boy. Nantwen, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Fall at face coal, from a slip slightly overhanging and with one sprag to it.

EVANS Benjamin - 1898 - 12/02/1898 – Age 52 – Repairer. Lewis Merthyr Hafod, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face of Nottinghamshire road while cutting out a prop which was too near the rails, the timbering collapsed and he was buried by a heavy fall. Four feet seam.

EVANS Charles - 1890 – 23/08/1890 – Age 22 – Dataller. Cannock Old Coppice, Cannock Old Coppice, Wyrley, Staffordshire. Thrown from cage when descending with seven other workmen.

EVANS Christopher - 1891 – 14/08/1891 – Age 35 – Haulier. Aberaman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on heading, a train on which he was riding having gone off the rails and struck out a pair of timbers. Road 8 foot wide, 6 foot high inside of double timbers fixed from 2 foot to 3 foot apart. Nine foot seam. Long wall.

EVANS D. Handle - 1890 – 04/10/1890 – Age 15 – Lamp boy. Maerdy Rhondda Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Maerdy Rhondda Fach, Glamorgan. Crushed between the crank and flywheel of a small engine which he had started without authority.

EVANS Daniel - 1894 - 07/04/1894 – Age 21 – Haulier. Celynen, Newport & Abercarn Black Vein Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. Fall of side in a stall where there had been a crush. He was following the horse and full train when a quarter to half a tram full of clod and crushed coal fell from the side, knocked him down and injured his back causing death within half an hour. He had been a haulier for some years and had also worked as a Collier. By increased use of timber and vigilance on the part of the examiner or fireman this accident might probably have been provided against.

EVANS Daniel - 1896 - 01/08/1896 – Age 32 – Labourer. Universal, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fell under loaded truck, the wheel of which went over his thigh.

EVANS Daniel - 1896 - 06/11/1896 – Age 47 – Airwayman. Wynnstay, Wynnstay Collieries Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was clearing a fall and timbering in the airway when a stone, about 6 inches square, rolled down the fall injuring his stomach. He walked out of the pit himself but the injuries proved fatal, he having ruptured himself some time previously.

EVANS Daniel - 1897 - 06/07/1897 – Age 23 – Collier. Great Mountain, Great Mountain Colliery Co. Ltd., Carmarthen. Fall of side at face coal, which was said to have been spragged.

EVANS Daniel - 1897 - 13/07/1897 – Age 38 - Master haulier. Gwaun Cae Gurwen, Gwaun Cae Gurwen Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Run over by loaded tram on which he was riding, the draw bar of the second tram, of a journey of seven having broken, causing the first tram to spring forward flinging him off.

EVANS Daniel - 1897 - 14/01/1897 – Age 23 – Collier. River Level, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face coal which although overhanging holes and 12 ft long was not spragged. Nine feet seam.

EVANS David (injured) - 1894 - 03/08/1894 – Age 23 - Slate loader. Moelferna (slate). The counterbalance waggon of the self acting incline somehow left the rails in its ascent and caused such a jerk to the descending travelling platform that the workman standing on it was thrown off and received a severe blow on the head causing concussion of the brain. Possibly the counterbalance waggon was thrown off the rails by a stone. 7 weeks off.

EVANS David (injured) - 1894 - 14/09/1894 – Age 29 – Smasher. Oakeley (slate). He was jumping a hole in a piece of loose rock, in the fall, when it rolled away from under his feet and threw him to the ground. Left thumb amputated. Fifteen and a half weeks off.

EVANS David - 1890 - 19/02/1890 – Age 40 – Rockman. Bryneglwys (slate). A huge block of slate, weighing about 25 tons, came away unexpectedly from the working face. The men had split off some of the foot of the big bloc, but they were of opinion that it would not come down without blasting.

EVANS David - 1892 - 26/10/1892 – Age 54 - Coal cleaner. Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, Gwaun- Cae-Gurwen Colliery Co. Ltd., Brynaman, Glamorgan. Crushed between waggons on siding.

EVANS David - 1892 - 30/03/1892 – Age 32 – Collier. Foxhole, Pwll Mawr Foxhole Collieries Co., Llansamlet, Glamorgan. Fall of side from edge of heading while filling tram. Insufficient spragging.

EVANS David - 1893 - 09/03/1893 – Age 66 – Haulier. White R Level, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., New Tredegar, Monmouth. Found dead on the main roadway 20 or 30 yards behind the trams which he was taking out and which were found to be off the rails on an inclined part of the road. He would seem to have been trying to put sprags into the wheels near the top of this steep part and to have, in some manner, stumbled in front of the trams which passed over him. He was, it seems, an old and experienced haulier although only employed three or four days on this road. The horse was a quiet and steady one.

EVANS David - 1894 - 21/05/1894 – Age 50 – Collier. Ferndale No. 1 D Davis and Son Ltd., Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fall of side (clod) at face. He received injury on the leg and died on 28th May from meningitis according to the medical evidence. Six feet seam.

EVANS David - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 38 – Fireman. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

EVANS David - 1896 - 03/10/1896 – Age 26 – Ripper. Cymmer, Cymmer Colliery Co., Glamorgan. Struck by a stone from a carbonite shot at a distance of 48 yards.

EVANS David - 1896 - 08/04/1896 – Age 45 – Fireman. Aldridge, Aldridge Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Died 14th Apr. Fall of roof while going his rounds.

EVANS David - 1896 - 19/02/1896 – Age 21 – Repairer. Fforchaman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall on road, stone, while cutting side to enlarge road. Six feet seam.

EVANS David - 1896 - 21/01/1896 – Age 30 – Repairer. Ocean, Western Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall on road stone 11 foot x 5 foot x 23 inches where a cog was being removed. Lower seam.

EVANS David - 1896 - 27/08/1896 – Age 16 – Trammer. Pontyberem, Pontyberem Collieries Co. Ltd., Carmarthen. Crushed at bottom of self acting incline by a tram coming down uncontrolled by brake, owing to a misunderstanding on part of the attendant.

EVANS David - 1897 - 16/04/1897 – Age 13 - Door boy. Abergorky, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While in the act of spragging a laden tram, he fell under it.

EVANS David - 1898 - 22/11/1898 – Age 39 – Collier. Ocean, Western Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face clift 8 feet x 3 feet x 6.5 inches thick while standing a prop under it. Lower seam.

EVANS David - 1898 - 25/02/1898 – Age 52 – Repairer. International, International Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face clift 5 foot x 4 foot x 21 inches thick from between two parallel smooth slips and between nearest props 4.5 foot back and face. Victoria seam.

EVANS David John - 1890 - 16/07/1890 – Age 15 – Haulier. Victoria No. 1, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. He was found doubled up and dead under a tram on a platform. He had evidently fallen in front of the tram while in motion but how it occurred is not exactly known. Probably he fell from the front end of the train while riding upon it.

EVANS Edward (injured) - 1894 - 30/04/1894 – Age 32 – Carpenter. Cefn Coch (metalliferous). While erecting a building he fell from a scaffold. Collar bone broken. Three and a quarter months off.

EVANS Edwin - 1895 - 03/10/1895 – Age 29 – Contractor. Gidlow, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They had bored two holes and charged them with roburite for roofing down but while he was in the set of knocking a prop out from under the roof at that point, it fell upon him to a slip crossing the roadway. The fireman was present at the time but did not detect the danger.

EVANS Elias - 1895 - 13/01/1895 – Age 42 – Mason. Cambrian Navigation, Thomas Riches and Co., Glamorgan. Whilst standing on bowk, at six feet landing, he was alarmed by an icicle falling down the shaft and in attempting to step off on to the landing, a distance of 1 foot 9 inches, his foot slipped and he fell back into sump.

EVANS Ellis (injured) - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 18 – Miner. Llechwedd (slate). He was tipping rubbish from a wheel barrow over a precipice. Somehow he fell over himself and dropped a distance of 27 foot. His barrow did not fall over, severe scalp wound. Five and a half weeks off.

EVANS Ellis - 1894 - 12/04/1894 – Age 28 – Smasher. Oakeley (slate). Fall of part of a derrick while he was assisting in raising an old boiler tube.

EVANS Ellis - 1896 - 27/04/1896 – Age 50 – Fireman. Wynnstay, Wynnstay Collieries Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The colliery was not working on the date when the deceased, who was a fireman, with others were engaged changing bars in one of the roadways. After knocking out one of the props from under one of the bars the roof suddenly gave way capping six bars and burying the deceased.

EVANS Evan (injured) - 1892 - 17/02/1892 – Age 25 – Miner. Craig Uchaf (metalliferous). He was preparing a charge of gelignite outside a level when a lump of stone fell on it and caused it to explode. The detonator had already been inserted. Thumb and forefinger of right hand blown off. 16 week off.

EVANS Evan - 1890 - 17/01/1890 – Age 29 – Haulier. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mardy Rhondda, Glamorgan. Jammed between a tram of rubbish, which had left the rails, and the arm of a pair of timbers where there was only 9 inches of clearance. There was plenty of room on other side of road.

EVANS Evan - 1890 - 22/03/1890 – Age 35 – Collier. Ferndale No. 3 D Davis and Sons Ltd., Ystrad, Rhondda, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (clift, 5 feet x 4 feet x 1 foot) from between two unseen slips at right angles to face. Two-foot-nine seam, 47  inches thick. Longwall.

EVANS Evan - 1891 - 03/07/1891 – Age 19 – Haulier. International, International Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Garw Valley, Glamorgan. Found dead under tram of rubbish, which he was bringing out with a horse. Road in good order 10 foot wide, 9.5 foot high dipping slightly. No fall had occurred, and the presumption is that he was riding on shafts and had fallen off.

EVANS Evan - 1891 - 05/02/1891 – Age 16 – Horsedriver. Bettisfield, Bettisfield Colliery Co. Ltd., Bagillt, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was riding on a full tub and was crushed between it and a low bar. Riding was strictly prohibited and the deceased knew the rule. 3.0 pm.

EVANS Evan - 1892 - 02/08/1892 – Age 57 – Repairer. Ferndale No. 1, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fall of roof while doubling timbers at edge of a previous fall.

EVANS Evan - 1892 - 04/06/1892 – Age 22 - Asst. timberman. Ocean, Eastern Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Ystrad Rhondda, Glamorgan. Fall of roof while reopening a double parting where there was an overlap fault crossing. 2 killed.

EVANS Evan - 1894 - 19/07/1894 – Age 33 – Collier. Plymouth Works, Abercanaid Hills Plymouth Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Deceased was injured on the back and hip by a fall of a piece of coal and clod while ripping and died on 15th Aug. "from Brights” disease accelerated by the injuries, according to the medical evidence. Gellydaeg seam.

EVANS Evan - 1899 - 17/04/1899 – Age 55 – Repairer. Maritime, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While ascending cage caught in byatt and they fell out. 2 killed.

EVANS Evan H. - 1897 - 01/04/1897 – Age 37 – Quarryman. New Vronheulog Slate Quarry, New Vronheulog Slate Co., Carnarvon. While he was engaged in excavating a cutting 18 feet deep and 13 feet wide at the top, about 3 cwt. of earth fell out from the side and knocked him against a waggon. Skull fractured. He died the following day.

EVANS Evan Pearce - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 33 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

EVANS Frank - 1891 - 20/06/1891 – Age 16 – Screenboy. Saltwells, Earl of Dudley, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Run over by empty railway trucks after his days work had finished.

EVANS Fred (injured) - 1894 - 02/05/1894 – Age 24 – Collier. Shelton No. 3 Racecourse, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Hanley, Staffordshire. Fall of ironstone at working face in Bassey Mine after drawing spraggs for shot firing. Lovekin's leg and foot bruised. Evans one leg broken and the other crushed. 2 injured.

EVANS Fred - 1899 - 19/08/1899 – Age 24 – Haulier. Llest, Llest Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 19 killed.

EVANS George (injured) - 1894 - 08/12/1894 – Age 45 – Engineman. Priors Lee Stafford, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Priors Lee, Shropshire. Ribs broken and side lacerated by spur gearing of capstan engine while attempting to oil a bearing with the engine in motion.

EVANS George - 1891 - 04/04/1891 – Age 17 – Collier. Tirpentwys, Tirpentwys Black Vein Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Fall of roof. A large stone fell from a pot or bell mould close to the face.

EVANS George - 1894 - 13/12/1894 – Age 69 – Pikeman. Moseley Hole. Thomas Jones, Staffordshire. Fall of top coal in a waste when getting builders. Cause previously unseen slips. Died 6th Jan 1895.

EVANS George - 1894 - 22/09/1894 – Age 22 – Collier. Bwllfa Dare, Bwllfa & Merthyr Dare Steam Collieries (1891) Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of side (clod) at face while lifting a large piece of coal on to tram. Probably he had accidentally knocked out a prop which was supporting the clod. Four feet seam.

EVANS George - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 30 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

EVANS George - 1895 - 20/12/1895 – Age 59 – Haulier. Llwynpia No. 1, Glamorgan coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While behind two teams of rubbish drawn by a horse another horse came up against him injuring him internally.

EVANS George - 1896 - 09/12/1896 – Age 14 – Collier. River Level, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Glamorgan. Drowned by an influx of water from the adjoining abandoned colliery. 6 killed.

EVANS George - 1897 - 11/10/1897 – Age 16 – Drawer. Hindley Field, Hindley Field coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. This accident occurred at a jigger shunt where a tub had to be lowered a short distance with a chain. This chain was not hooked as intended and the tub ran down and caught the deceased and crushed him against another tub. The shunt was low and narrow. Jury asked for it to be enlarged.

EVANS George - 1898 - 15/06/1898 – Age 52 – Collier. Westminster, Westminster Brymbo coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. While holding a light for his partner to pull down some clod from the roof at the face a stone accidentally struck the deceased fracturing his leg. He died at the Wrexham Infirmary July 7th, 1898, from blood poisoning.

EVANS Griffith (injured) - 1891 - 03/08/1891 – Age 46 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). Explosion of gunpowder in a hole while preparing to tamp it. Precise cause of explosion not known. Probably a spark from the candle. Hand slightly burnt. 3 weeks off.

EVANS Henry - 1890 - 09/09/1890 – Age 39 – Shotfirer. Plymouth Works, Plymouth Works mortgagees, Merthyr, Glamorgan. Killed by a shot in roof to which he had returned in the belief, apparently, that it had missed fire. He was an experienced Collier but it was his first shift as a shotman.

EVANS Henry - 1891 - 22/10/1891 – Age 34 – Sinker. Dowlais Cardiff, Dowlais Iron Co., Llanvabon, Glamorgan. Fell off walling stage into about 30 feet of water and was drowned.

EVANS Henry - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 30 – Timberman. Albion, Albion Steam coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion 290 killed.

EVANS Hugh (non-fatal) - 1893 - 01/09/1893 – Age 39 – Labourer. Rhoswydd (slate). His foot slipped while he was pushing a loaded waggon along a level and he fell between the waggons and the side. He was severely squeezed on the back. 19 weeks off.

EVANS Hugh - 1892 - 12/12/1892 – Age 34 – Timberman. Ynyscedwyn, Ynyscedwyn & Swansea Colliery Co. Ltd., Swansea Valley, Brecon. Fall of roof on road while repairing.

EVANS Isaac - 1894 - 26/09/1894 – Age 22 – Cogger. Wednesbury, P Williams and Sons, Tipton, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. Died 4th Oct.

EVANS Isaac - 1897 - 22/09/1897 – Age 40 – Contractor. Wynnstay, Wynnstay Collieries Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The contractor was wedging down the coal on the rise side of the level when a piece four yards in length came off from a slip knocking two props out and crushing the deceased; Evans expired the day of the accident and Edwards died at the hospital the following day from the effects of the injuries received. 2 killed.

EVANS Isaac - 1899 - 30/03/1899 – Age 20 – Collier. Park, Ocean coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fatally injured by the explosion of a quarter pound of roburite which had missed fired while using a mandrill in drawing down stone shattered by a second shot fired within 13  inches of the missed charge. Died 4th June.

EVANS Isiah (rescued) - 1896 - 30/04/1896. Micklefield, Joseph Cliffe and Sons, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 63 killed.

EVANS Issac - 1898 - 06/10/1898 – Age 28 – Collier. Norths Caerau, Norths Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face clod trough shaped fell from over the coal while clearing rubbish. Six feet seam.

EVANS Jacob - 1897 - 18/02/1897 – Age 67 – Haulier. Aber Rhondda, Aber Rhondda coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fell under loaded trams the pin fastening the gun of the horse's shaft, on which he was riding, having come out.

EVANS James (injured) - 1891 - 03/08/1891 – Age 16 - Lead dresser. Esgairfraith (metalliferous). He was shifting a water pipe which played a stream on to a revolving sieve and had his arm caught between the sieve and the trough in which it worked. Hand lacerated. He ought to have stopped the machinery before beginning his work. 8 weeks off.

EVANS James - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 23 – Collier. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.

EVANS James - 1894 - 27/11/1894 – Age 26 – Rider. Cleynen, Newport & Abercarn Black Vein Steam coal Co. Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. While engaged clearing a small fall on engine place caused by trams getting of the rails and striking against the arms a further fall occurred discharging three collars and burying him resulting in his suffocating before he could be released.

EVANS James - 1897 - 26/04/1897 – Age 59 – Collier. Plymouth Penyard Level Hills, Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by a full tram which was knocked away by large stones sliding down from a fall which he was clearing.

EVANS James - 1897 - 27/01/1897 – Age 23 – Collier. Mosley Common, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place. Insecurely propped.

EVANS James - 1898 - 08/10/1898 – Age 41 – Hitcher. Pochin, Tredegar Iron and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Killed instantly by a piece of coal falling down the shaft from the tram which was being banked at the surface.

EVANS James - 1898 - 19/04/1898 – Age 57 – Dataller. Whitwick No. 5, Whitwick Colliery Co., Leicester. A fire broke out on the main airway of the mine and developed so rapidly that only six men including the deputy out of a total of 41 who were at work beyond the fire were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.

EVANS James J. - 1898 - 14/05/1898 – Age 43 – Collier. Penygraig No. 2, Penygraig Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fall of side coal which was being holed without using sprags in the No. 2 Rhondda seam. Deceased was taking out the last bit of holing after it was cut on side.

EVANS Jenkin - 1897 - 08/05/1897 – Age 66 – Labourer. Ynysfaio, Troedyrhiw Coal Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, while shifting rubbish from between two slips two feet apart. Gorliwyn seam.

EVANS Jesse - 1896 - 27/01/1896 – Age 52 – Fireman. Ferndale Nos 7 & 8, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 57 killed.

EVANS John (injured) - 1890 - 20/11/1890 – Age 95 – Labourer. New Welsh Slate. A piece of rock weighing 3 to 4 cwt. fell from a height of 12 or 15 feet from the roof of the chamber where he was working and broke his arm which had to be amputated. Nine and half weeks off.

EVANS John (injured) - 1890 - 23/06/1890 – Age 38 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). Breakage of a ladder. He had fastened two ladders together in order to remove some unsafe rock from the roof of a chamber. Unfortunately he fixed the heavier ladder at the top the lower and weaker one broke causing him to fall. Arm and leg broken. 40 weeks off.

EVANS John (injured) - 1890 - 26/03/1890 – Age 41 – Timberman. Cwmystwyth (metalliferous). He was clearing away ore from a stope when a piece of the side came away unexpectedly and squeezed him. 8 weeks off.

EVANS John (injured) - 1891 - 28/01/1891 – Age 40 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). He was tramming a long block of slate along a level and in passing a curve the block swung round a little and squeezed Evans against the side. Eleven and a half weeks off.

EVANS John (injured) - 1894 - 04/05/1894 – Age 23 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). He had moved a block of slate with a crane and thinking it was firmly upon timber was about to remove the crane handle. The block suddenly lurched a little and caused the handle to fly round. Shoulder blade fractured. Ten and half weeks off.

EVANS John (injured) - 1894 - 11/09/1894 – Age 60 – Miner. Bryn-yr-afr (metalliferous). He was engaged fixing a 5 inches lift of pumps in the shaft and slipped while making a joint. He fell 3 or 4 fathoms and received two cuts to the head. 5 weeks off.

EVANS John (non-fatal) - 1892 - 06/07/1892 – Putter. Cadder No. 15, Carron Co., Maryhill, Lanarkshire. Run over by hutches caused by catching dook rope in shaft.

EVANS John - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 12 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading off Cooke's slope about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.

EVANS John - 1890 - 26/06/1890 – Age 12 - Door boy. Harris’ Navigation Deep, Navigation Collieries Ltd., Treharris, Glamorgan. On coming outbye he was knocked down by a journey on self acting incline. He had been in a manhole when ascending journey passed but did not wait for the descending journey to pass.

EVANS John - 1890 - 27/01/1890 – Age 76 – Engineman. Merthyr Vale, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Merthyr Vale, Glamorgan. In coming down a stair it is supposed that he slipped and fell against the balustrade which gave way and he fell to a floor 9 foot below.

EVANS John - 1891 - 20/01/1891 – Age 74 - Lamp locker. Cyfartha Cethin No. 2, Crawshay Bros. Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. In endeavouring to get out of the way of a journey while coming out on the main haulage road he either tripped over the rope or was struck with it and fell against a sheave which broke some of his ribs from the effects of which he died on the following day. There was a manhole opposite where he was found.

EVANS John - 1891 - 25/08/1891 – Age 27 – Tipper. Gelli Steam, Gelli & Tynybedw Colliery Co. Ltd., Ystrad Rhondda, Glamorgan. Fell over rubbish tip with tram which he was tipping.

EVANS John - 1892 - 19/02/1892 – Age 53 – Sinker. Gadlys, Graig Waynes Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Knocked off a scaffold by an explosion of firedamp and fell down shaft.

EVANS John - 1892 - 22/06/1892 – Age 45 – Labourer. Cyfartha Castle, Crawshay Bros. Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Knocked down by horse and tram while walking out in front of haulier.

EVANS John - 1892 - 22/11/1892 – Age 18 – Collier. South Wales No. 2, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Cwmtillery, Monmouth. Fall of coal and stone from the face of his working in the Old Coal. He was knocking out sprags from under the coal which had been left standing from the previous day. He apparently misjudged matters and it fell over upon him. He worked with his father (an old experienced miner) and youngest brother. They knew the coal was ready for falling and had agreed together that their first work should be to get it down. The deceased had been getting coal for a year or more.
