REES Morgan John - 1895 – 17/05/1895 – Age 14 – Collier’s boy. Aberaman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While passing along the face a pounce burst a block of coal out from a regular back slip and a cross rider with a six-inch clod above it. It was 6 foot long, from 9 to 27 inches wide, and 4 foot thick, the full thickness of the seam. Not spragged. Seven feet seam.
REES or POWELL Thomas - 1891 – 29/09/1891 – Age 39 – Pumpman. Glyn Collenna, Glamorgan Colliery Co. Ltd., Llantrissant, Glamorgan. Drowned by an influx of water in face of a dip slant, in course of being driven. The water came from old workings the existence of which was unknown.
REES Pryce - 1892 – 02/09/1892 – Age 40 – Banksman. Vauxhall, Vauxhall Colliery Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inquiry made. Deceased was bringing two waggons down, the last one running stiffly, he proceeded with the first one towards the screens when the last waggon overtook him unexpectedly and deceased got crushed between the buffers. Died Sept. 12th.

REES Simon - 1895 - 22/03/1895 – Age 45 – Fireman. Bwllfa, Bwllfa & Merthyr Dare Steam Collieries (1891) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of clift, 3.5 feet x 1.5 feet x 2 inches thick on heading, not timbered at place.
REES Thomas (injured) - 1891 - 29/12/1891 – Age 27 – Miner. Oakeley (slate). Two gangs of miners were driving respectively east and west with the object of meeting. Rees, who was driving west retired some 20 yards to a place he considered safe, when the men driving east fired their shots. These broke through the intervening partition and Rees was struck on the neck by a stone which probably rebounded from the side of the level before hitting him. The explosive used was gelignite. 2 weeks off.
REES Thomas (non-fatal) - 1893 - 10/08/1893 – Age 28 – Miner. Oakeley (slate). He was ramming a wad upon a charge of gelignite with a brass yipped tamping bar when it exploded. Injuries slight. Three and half weeks off.
REES Thomas - 1890 - 08/12/1890 – Age 34 – Sinker. Tillery Vivian Sinking, Powells Tillery Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Abertillery, Monmouth. Nine shots, with 2.5 lbs. of gelatine dynamite each having been fired by electricity about 5.30 a.m. This shift of men came on at 6 and filled the loosened stone up until 1 p.m. when while a steel point was being driven to get up a stone which had been shaken, one of the shots or part of one which had previously failed to go off exploded, 10 men being at the time in the pit bottom. It resulted in the death of three men and serious personal injury to four others.

Crushed between tram of rubbish and road side, the tram having run down a heading with deceased about 20 yards in front of it. It was stated that the shaft-pin came on while deceased and the haulier were turning the horse and tram into a stall from the heading which was rising from 1 in 30 to 1 in 18.

He was riding up an engine plane, on the rope attached to the journey, when he either slipped off and fell in front of the journey or he was thrown off by the jerking of the first tram through its getting off the rails.

The hanging side of a vein working suddenly collapsed burying the deceased whose body was not recovered until the lapse of 15 hours. The upper portion of the worked out vein was timbered with pillars and "stemples," and the working had been officially examined only half an hour previous to the accident, and considered perfectly safe.

It was a half-inch rope having 5 strands of 6 wires each and its work appeared excessive.

The deceased was drawing down some top coal in the face of a pillar when the roof fell from between two slips upon him and capping three props.

REYNOLDS Henry - 1897 - 24/02/1897 – Age 40 – Collier. Ashton Vale, Ashton Vale Iron Co. Ltd., Somerset. Fatally injured by a tram running wild on a slightly inclined road as he was walking into his work. He apparently got confused and losing his light failed to stand on the side out of the way. Death resulted on the 28th.

REYNOLDS William - 1898 - 24/10/1898 – Age 7 – Child. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was climbing on to an empty set of waggons and fell off and two of them passed over his legs. He was taken to the infirmary at Sunderland, where he died the following day.

He was making a refuge hole in the shaft siding and was warned about the loose stone on top of the coal and told to get it off. He got some off but not all and it afterwards gave way and fell on him. His drawer mentioned he advised him to sprag it but he declined thinking it was safe.

RICHARD Goldsworthy (non-fatal) - 1894 - 07/02/1894 – Age 19 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mine Adventurers, Illogan, Cornwall. Fall of ground. Alleged to be from an Air Blast i.e. the ground being apparently in a state of tension, a portion flew off suddenly in pieces and injured them. 3 injured.
RICHARD Joseph - 1897 - 20/10/1897 – Age 37 – Loader. Bulwell Top Hard Coal, Babbington Coal Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of side. A small piece of clod fell from the side of the coal face and struck the deceased on the head. The injury was slight but the blow and concussion of the brain gave rise to "meningitis," which resulted in death on 8th November.
RICHARD Lord (injured) - 1890 - 21/11/1890 – Age 55 – Banksman. Rossendale Nabb, Tramway Branch, George Hargreaves and Co., Newchurch, Lancashire. Injured by falling 8.5 feet from the sett at the terminus of the endless chain tramroad from the pit C.
RICHARD Rees - 1895 - 20/04/1895 – Age 40 – Collier. Park Blaina and Park Colliery Co., Carmarthen. While holing, without sprags, a piece of coal 4 feet x 16 inches x 14 inches and clod 5 feet x 14 inches x 15 inches fell upon him. Pumpquart seam.
RICHARD William - 1891 - 14/11/1891 – Age 45 – Timberman. Cyfartha Castle, Crawshay Bros. Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. He was accidentally struck with a pick on 14th November but continued working until 21st. Died from blood poisoning on 31st.
RICHARDS Albert - 1891 - 25/11/1891 – Age 30 – Banksman. Dean Lane, Bedminster Coal Co., Bristol, Gloucestershire. He fell from a mouthing, about 50 yards from the bottom of the shaft, hither he and a youth had gone to attend to an auxiliary ventilating furnace. While taking a tram, with coal from the cage, it got off the rails and their lamp falling it was extinguished. He sent it to be relighted at the surface and sat down near the shaft to await its return. For some unexplained reason he got up approached the shaft and fell down the mouthing to the bottom. He was in the habit of going two or three times each night to attend to this furnace for some months.

RICHARDS Edward - 1892 - 15/02/1892 – Age 54 – Haulier. Dinas Clydach, Dinas Clydach Coal Co., Ton-y-Pandy, Glamorgan. His head came into contact with a brow of roof and he was knocked back and killed on the spot while riding on the shafts.

RICHARDS Edward - 1898 - 26/07/1898 – Age 24 – Hardgroundman. Ocean, Maindy Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side where room was being made for arching on main road, a piece of bastard fireclay 8 feet x 7 feet x 2.5 feet fell upon him. New seam.
RICHARDS Enock - 1896 - 09/06/1896 – Age 57 – Labourer. Cinder Hill, Babbington Coal Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased's duty was to oil the rollers on the engine plane. He was found dead under a set of empty trams which had evidently knocked him down.
RICHARDS George - 1898 - 17/06/1898 – Age 44 – Stallman. Hucknall No. 1, Hucknall Colliery Co. Nottinghamshire. He died on 4th September from blood poisoning arising from injury to the hand received in the mine. The injury appeared to be very slight and he continued at work for some time.
RICHARDS Henry (non-fatal) - 1891 - 17/03/1891 – Age 17 – Miner. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), Thomas Bolitho and Co., St. Just, Cornwall. The waggon with which they were tramming, at the 95-fathom level, having cap sized they attempted to right it, while doing so the runners broke, owing to dry rot, and they were precipitated together with the waggon into the "plat." 3 injured.
RICHARDS J. Selio (injured) - 1892 - 05/04/1892 – Age 48 - Ore dresser. East Darren (metalliferous). He was attempting to take a belt from a pulley and fell against the drive shaft and was knocked down, ribs broken. 3 weeks off.
RICHARDS James (non-fatal) - 1893 - 31/10/1893 – Age 58 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mine Adventurers, Illogan, Cornwall. He was engaged with a pick which resulted in a splinter of rock striking his eye.

RICHARDS James - 1895 - 23/09/1895 – Age 37 – Fireman. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co., Ashington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased, in running out of the way of a waggon coming down the road, slipped and fell in front of it.
RICHARDS John (injured) - 1890 - 01/12/1890 – Age 67 – Miner. Docloath (metalliferous), Docloath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. The man and his comrade were engaged in a stope above the 388 and the former, who had been at that level running stuff from the mill, in attempting to return to his comrade slipped off the stull and fell a distance of 18 feet sustaining injuries to his head and legs.
RICHARDS John (injured) - 1890 - 29/07/1890 – Age 37 – Trammer. Wheal Kitty (metalliferous), Wheal Kitty Mining Co., Scorrier, Cornwall. He had the bone of his face, just below the left eye, smashed through, slipping his feet and coming into contact with the waggon, being engaged at the time pushing a waggon load of tin stuff.
RICHARDS John (injured) - 1890 - 29/09/1890 – Age 18 – Miner. South Wheal Frances (metalliferous), South Wheal Frances Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. A rock fell from the level above that at which Richards was working and struck him on the foot injuring it slightly.
RICHARDS John (non-fatal) - 1892 – 15/07/1892 – Age 56 – Miner. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), Thomas Bolitho Sons and others, St. Just, Cornwall. While engaged charging a hole with compressed powder he, having probably applied some force to get the bobbin into the hole, it exploded and injured him severely.
RICHARDS John - 1892 – 09/04/1892 – Age 44 – Engineer. Wyndham, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Nantymoel, Glamorgan. Fell out of cage while descending alone.
RICHARDS John - 1893 – 26/10/1893 – Age 47 – Sinker. Tir Pentwys, Tir Pentwys Black Vein Steam Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. There were five men in the bottom of the sinking pit, lighting shots, and having done so they got into the kibble or bowk and signalled to be wound up. While doing so the signal rope broke and as the engineman paused before starting to wind up they were about to get out, to extract the fuses from the holes. Richards and a man named Matthews had got out when the engineman commenced drawing up the kibble or bowk he then caught the side of the kibble which was drawn up about 40 yards before they could give a signal leaving Matthews in the bottom. Before they could get the kibble properly to the mouthing, which there is at this place, he let go and it fell to the bottom. Matthews marvellously escaped almost uninjured. Previous shots (in rock) are supposed to have caused damage to the signal rope which escaped detection.
RICHARDS John - 1894 – 13/03/1894 – Age 42 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mine Adventurers, Camborne, Cornwall. He returned to a shot which he found had only partially done its work and asked for the dynamite canister and a detonator. Shortly after these were handed to him an explosion occurred which blew deceased four fathoms away and slightly injured his son John Richards jnr. It would appear as though he was recharging the hole.
RICHARDS John - 1898 – 19/04/1898 – Age 29 – Stallman. Whitwick No. 5, Whitwick Colliery Co., Leicester. A fire broke out on the main airway of the mine and developed so rapidly that only six men, including the deputy, out of a total of 41 who were at work beyond the fire were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.
RICHARDS Lewis (injured) - 1894 – 09/03/1894 – Age 70 – Tipman. Diphws Casson Slate Mine. His crowbar slipped while he was clearing the tip and he fell and cut his head. Six and a half weeks off.
RICHARDS or PRITCHARD Amos - 1896 - 27/01/1896 – Age 46 – Haulier. Ferndale Nos 7 & 8, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 57 killed.
RICHARDS Pryce - 1892 - 22/02/1892 – Age 46 – Contractor. New Tredegar, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., New Tredegar, Monmouth. He was travelling up an engine plane, in the dark, and was run over by the full trams. He was probably riding on the rope in front of the journey and slipped off thus getting under the trams.
RICHARDS Richard (injured) - 1890 - 23/06/1890 – Age 59 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath, Camborne, Cornwall. Both men, and another, were standing on a plank, laid across a winze drawing up a ladder, when the plank broke and all three fell into the winze. Williams fell 72 feet, had his collar-bone badly hurt, and Richards, who after falling 24 feet was caught by a piece of timber fixed across the Winze, he had one rib broken and others injured while Tippett, the third man who fell on Richards, escaped unhurt.
RICHARDS Richard (slate) - 1891 - 03/07/1891 – Age 52 – Miner. Oakeley (slate). A stone loosened by a blast which he had just fired fell down and struck him on the leg. 19 weeks off.

RICHARDS Samuel - 1899 - 06/04/1899 – Age 24 – Shunter. Bedworth, Charity Bedworth Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Warwick. Deceased was rubbing some chalk marks from the back end of a loaded truck when another loaded waggon was allowed to bump into it and crushed the deceased. He died the same day.
RICHARDS Taliesyn - 1895 - 07/12/1895 – Age 45 – Carpenter. Maritime, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. He fell off a beam on to roof over pit top and then on to railway, about 30 feet below. It was very windy and he may have been blown off. Died 9th Dec.

RICHARDS William Edward - 1895 - 29/03/1895 – Age 20 – Bankrider. Coalbrookvale, Coalbrookvale Colliery Co., Coalbrookvale, Monmouth. While walking or riding up the steepest part of the engine plane, on a journey of 13 trams, the chain broke and the trams ran back a short distance. Deceased was found under the trams with both legs broken. Amputation was performed but he died from the effects on the 4th of April.

RICHARDSON Alexander - 1898 - 30/08/1898 – Age 63 – Hewer. Cramlington Lamb, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Cramlington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was walking out-bye along the engine plane, when he was overtaken by the full set and killed. The manholes were at the proper distance, and the road wide and in good order.
RICHARDSON Charles H. - 1891 - 20/01/1891 – Age 24 – Surveyor. Bwllfa Dare, Bwllfa & Merthyr, Dare Steam Collieries (1891) Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Crushed to death by loaded journey on engine plane while travelling inbye alone. His safety lamp book and tape were found at the mouth of a man-hole and the compass and legs on the road opposite, 170 yards further on than where he was found under the ninth tram of the journey of 17.

The roof fell out bodily from between two steps about 8 yards apart, carrying a bar and some props before it and fell on the deceased who was passing under it with a tub at the time. 7.50 am.

RICHARDSON Herry - 1897 - 18/12/1897 – Age 25 – Holer. Amington 7 feet Coal, Glascote Colliery Co., Warwick. Fall of side. Deceased was commencing to hole the coal when the coal came over and killed him. From an examination of the Place, after the accident, it appeared the coal was overhanging.
