Two men were getting coal, one was at the pit bottom drawing coals out, whilst the other man, also a drawer was stationed at the pit mouth. Riley was working a few yards further in the pit than Baron, and one of our representatives was informed that he was getting coal from a point where he had been forbidden, by the manager. This coal was comparatively easy to get, but it is known among the men that to work it is a source of danger. Baron, whose business it was to take soundings of the roof, had just done so when the accident took place. He had sounded the roof and assured himself that all was right, when without a moments warning the roof of the workings caved in, bringing down about 100 tons of earth, stone and coal. George Egan, the drawer, was luckily just outside this particular workings, and escaped with out injury, but Baron, who was just within, was pinned to the ground by an immense stone. Poor Riley however had no possible chance of escape and was crushed and buried alive. As soon as Egan saw what had happened he rushed to Baron's assistance, but he found it impossible to remove, unaided, the stone that held his fellow worker a prisoner. He communicated therefore with those above, and when Baron was at last extricated it was found that his left thigh had been broken six inches above the knee. He was at once brought to the surface and conveyed to the East Lancashire Infirmary, where he now lies, and is making fair progress. The men having extricated Baron, redoubled their efforts in search of Riley. Shortly after Monday midnight one of the poor fellow's arms was found, and about half past two Tuesday morning his body was recovered. He was found in such a position as would indicate that he made a desperate attempt to escape. Of course he was dead, but not mutilated as badly as one might expect. (Darwen News, May 18th. 1898).
