While engaged repairing the Highbarrow Shaft, at the 50-fathom level, he appears to have overbalanced himself and fallen away to the 130-fathom level where his dead body was found.

Fall of roof in the main roadway of the mine which liberated a quantity of gas that and accumulated over the timber. The gas fired at the pony drivers naked light who were passing within a few yards of the main road at the time. 2 killed.

COMTHWAITE William - 1891 - 28/07/1891 – Age 22 – Sinker. No.1 Mouzell (metalliferous), Millom and Askham Haematite Iron Co., Mouzell, Lancashire. The top hand, not having the bogie properly over the shaft, the kibble on being detached from the rope fell down the pit striking deceased. Inspection made and inquest attended. 1.0 am.

CONDON William - 1894 - 05/06/1894 – Age 21 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mine Adventurers, Illogan, Cornwall. Fall of ground. A rock about 1.5 to 2 tons weight fell from the lip of a stope, on the back of the 197 fathom level, and fell into the underhand stope below this level. Rolling down, this stone killed deceased and injured another man (Michael Trevena).
CONDRON Patrick - 1897 - 22/11/1897 – Age 65 – Labourer. Lassodie, Thomas Spowart and Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased had finished his work for day and went to lift the jacket of another workman from off the draw hook of a waggon when loco engine pushed another waggon up and fatally crushed him.

CONLAN John - 1892 - 04/01/1892 – Age 23 – Screener. Beamish Air, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Beamish, Co. Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased, and another man, were sent to bring some empty tubs from the gangway of a tipping stage and in passing round them he either tripped or had a fit and fell down a shoot.

CONNELL Edward - 1898 - 04/08/1898 – Age 17 - Pony driver. Bothwell Park, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Run over in some unexplained manner by a race of full hutches he was taking along a road.
CONNELL George - 1898 - 14/02/1898 – Age 45 – Miner. Gilmilnscroft No.3, Gauchalland Coal Co., Ayrshire. While redding through an old road to reach a stoop the roof fell on him.
CONNELL Peter - 1896 - 18/05/1896 – Age 35 – Sinker. Bridgeness, Bridgeness Coal Co., Lanarkshire. Deceased and some others were redding out and repairing a shaft which had been disused for about 35 years. While examining the suction of a steam pump some debris slipped from the opposite side of the shaft and crushed his head between the suction pipe and the shaft side.
CONNELL Thomas - 1898 - 28/11/1898 – Age 36 – Hewer. Seaton Burn, John Bowes and Partners Ltd., Seaton Burn, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. When filling a tub a large stone fell from between two slips which had not previously been noticed. The place was being opened out on the longwall system and was well timbered with chocks.

CONNELLY Henry - 1899 - 20/05/1899 – Age 50 – Miner. Holytown No.5, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fireman went into a level, in which there had been no work for a week and which was not fenced off, when his naked light ignited an accumulation of firedamp. The fireman admitted that he had not inspected the face of this level. 2 killed. In addition to the deceased another five men were injured.

CONNOR Benjamin - 1893 - 27/12/1893 – Age 22 – Miner. No.3 (metalliferous), Mowbray Iron Ore Co. Ltd., Frizington. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had lighted two shots, only one of which exploded, and on returning to his place he omitted to examine the state of the roof when a sudden fall of stone took place killing him on the spot.

Deceased when trying to stop a waggon and standing on the brake was jammed between the top of the waggon and a post. He died on the 8th March 1894.
CONNOR Michael - 1896 - 10/04/1896 – Age 22 – Daywageman. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inquiry made, and inquest attended. The deceased was engaged breaking some rock stone for packing after they had set two props when a piece of rock stone fell upon him. The fireman had drawn his attention to the stone and had asked him to come from under it just before it fell upon the deceased.

CONSTANTINE Michael - 1890 - 09/12/1890 – Age 51 – Labourer. Norths’ Navigation, Norths’ Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Maesteg, Glamorgan. Fell off a wall about 5ft. high. Died 18th. December.
CONWAY Alexander (non-fatal) - 1894 - 12/02/1894 – Age 25 – Trimmer. Broadrigg, John Nimmo and Son, Stirling. Crushed by waggon 21 days off.
CONWAY Benjamin (injured) - 1894 - 10/07/1894 – Age 22 - Ore dresser. Nan-y-garw (metalliferous). He was about to shift a belt from a fast pulley to a loose one, with a piece of slick, when he slipped and was caught by a joint in the belt. Both bones of the right forearm broken below the elbow. Six and a half weeks off.
CONWAY Edward (injured) - 1890 - 26/02/1890 – Age 24 – Miner. Nant-y-Garw (metalliferous). While carrying a lighted candle and two detonators in his hand one of the detonators took fire and exploded knocking a hole clean through the palm of his hand. 12 months off.

CONWAY George (injured) - 1891 - 18/06/1891 – Age 16 - Lead dresser. Halkyn (metalliferous). Left foot caught and big toe crushed by coupling driving of the crusher. The lad had no business at the place and could not have gone there unawares. He probably went there while playing. 9 weeks off.
CONWAY George - 1897 - 16/02/1897 – Age 30 – Engineman. Nant-y-garw lead, Nant-y-garw Mining Co. Ltd., Brecon. While greasing some cog wheels in motion he was caught by them and crushed so badly that he died the same day.

COOK Charles - 1899 - 23/10/1899 – Age 27 – Collier. Cymmer, Insoles Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face cliff 6ft. x 6ft. x 12ins. thick inside of nearest flat 6.5ft. back from coal. No props had been set, he stood under it. Five feet seam.
COOK Frederick - 1898 - 14/07/1898 – Age 30 – Labourer. Sewell Chalk Quarry, BJ Forder and Son, Bedford. Deceased was assisting to lower four full trucks down the railway siding, he stepped over the brake lever and was fatally crushed under the trucks after being dragged some distance.

COOKE John - 1897 - 11/09/1897 - Tram rider. Tir, Pentwys, Monmouth. Died on the 3rd April from pneumonia. He is alleged to have strained his back when lifting a tram on the 11th September 1897 but continued to work until the 29th January, when he ceased work.

A fall of roof occurred at the face of his working place from between two Slips, one running along the coal face. He was in the act of setting a prop the fireman having given the deceased instructions to set some.

COONEY John (injured) - 1891 - 10/09/1891 – Age 38 - Dayman. Chequerbent Yard, Executors of Col. Hargreaves, Over Hulton, Lancashire. Injured by roof falling where he was removing dirt in a level; he having loosened the props. Inspection and inquiry.
COOPE Edwin - 1896 - 23/12/1896 – Age 48 – Collier. Ebbw Vale, Waun Llwyd Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof in his working place, from an unseen slant, fractured his thigh and he died from the effects on the 16th January 1897. The place was apparently well timbered.

COOPER George - 1892 - 21/10/1892 – Age 31 – Hewer. Cowpen, Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Cowpen, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The pony, with two full tubs, had stuck on an incline and deceased was assisting to start them when the pony backed and the deceased, who had his back to the tubs with his hands spragged against a baulk, received such injuries to the spine that he died the same night.

COOPER James - 1893 - 17/07/1893 – Age 26 – Jigger. Hole House, Cliviger Coal Co., Cliviger, Lancashire. Crushed by tub, probably lifting a full tub the endless chain being in motion.
COOPER James - 1895 - 22/01/1895 – Age 57 – Collier. Whinney Hill, Altham Colliery Co., Lancashire. Riding in on his sled it went between rails throwing him off, broke skin on elbow size of a pea; from blood poisoning died on 19th February. Margaret Cooper, wife of the deceased, said he worked at Whinney Hill coal-pit as a collier, until Tuesday afternoon. He complained the same evening of pain all over his body. He showed her his elbow, which was all black though the skin was not broken. He told her he had fallen off his sledge. (sledge; small flat four wheeled tram for riding to and from the coal face) On Thursday morning, she called Dr. Geddie, because he was much worse, but he died before the doctor arrived. Hiram Varley, sledge looker at Whinney Hill said his job was to look after the sledges. About a fortnight ago the deceased was rather late in going out of the pit, and being asked why he was late he replied that his sledge had left the metals (rails) and he had been thrown off. He advised the deceased to have his sledge repaired and not to use it, but he did not do so, and continued to use it. Dr. Geddie said the deceased had died from blood poisoning. The jury returned a verdict that deceased died form blood poisoning adding the rider that the proprietors insist that the men have their sledge in repair. (Accrington Advertiser).
COOPER James - 1898 - 12/10/1898 – Age 29 – Quarrier. Greensmoor Sandstone quarry, Richard Siddall, Lancashire. Large stone, being lowered by steam crane; deceased was placing a stone cog to keep lashing chain free of ground when he was caught by the large stone and crushed against a muck box.
COOPER John - 1895 - 11/12/1895 – Age 56 – Collier. Dungannon, Dungannon Colliery Co. Ltd., Tyrone, Ireland. Water broke through barrier between new place and old workings. Water had been tapped by boreholes nearly a week. Coal worked off the barrier after tapping water insufficient flank bores. 6 killed.
COOPER Joseph - 1891 - 24/02/1891 – Age 35 – Collier. Strangeways Hall, Crompton and Shawcross, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased men were working in wide work when the roof fell from between some hidden slips capping two props and burying both Rigby and Cooper who received injuries to which they succumbed. 2 killed. 10.45 am.
COOPER Joseph - 1893 - 17/04/1893 – Age 35 – Metalman. Aston Hall, Aston Hall Coal and Brick Co., Hawarden, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased and two other men were building a pack wall, near face of a roadway, when portion of this ley stone fell to a slip, capping three props, and crushing the deceased.

COOPER Richard - 1894 - 10/09/1894 – Age 28 – Repairer. Cambrian, Navigation No. 2, Thomas Riches and Co., Clydach Vale, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road. He was making room to fix a prop, under some old timbers supporting a bridge, which showed signs of weakness when they gave way. Red vein.

COOPER W. - 1899 - 12/12/1899 – Age 36 – Fitter. Low Laithes, Low Laithes Coal Co., Yorkshire. Was assisting the shunter on a siding when he was run over by a waggon. Died 14th December.
COOPER Walter James - 1897 - 22/12/1897 – Age 15 - Horse driver. Moorgreen, Barber Walker and Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased died from strangulation of the bowels. An inquest was held, it was reported that he was injured by lifting a tram in the mine. The jury returned the following verdict “strangulation of the bowels, there is not sufficient evidence to show that he had received an injury in the mine or any satisfactory evidence that he received any injury at all."
COOPER William - 1890 - 10/10/1890 – Age 37. Hucknall Torkard, Hucknall Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Died from blood poisoning due to a scratch on his thumb, but no evidence to show that such scratch or injury was due to an accident in the mine.
COOPER William - 1894 - 09/01/1894 – Age 36 – Stallman. Reservoir, Moira Colliery Co., Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicester. Fall of roof. Deceased was examining some bad roof shortly after a shot had been fired when it fell upon him.
COOPER William - 1898 - 18/08/1898 – Age 30 – Quarrier. Coppy Leasows Brick Quarry, J Joberns and Co., Staffordshire. Fell into the rolls upon top floor of engine house.
COOPER William - 1899 - 19/05/1899 – Age 31 – Quarryman. Brampton Clay Quarry, James Pearson, Derby. Fall of clay from the quarry face while deceased and two others were filling clay, which had previously been got down. Probably due to the face being slightly overhanging and considerable rain in the previous night. Another workman was injured.
COPE Arthur - 1892 - 13/10/1892 – Age 46 – Engineman. Ubberley, Chatterley Whitfield Collieries Ltd., Bucknall, Staffordshire. Fell off rolley while being drawn up engine dip and was run over and crushed.
COPE Daniel - 1890 - 08/12/1890 – Age 48 – Roadsman. Great Fenton, Staffordshire. Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Stoke, Staffordshire. Fall from side of level in Ash Seam. Cope was taking bottom up and undermined the stone which fell.
COPE Frank - 1891 - 15/05/1891 – Age 28 – Collier. Apedale Watermills, Midland Coal Coke and Iron Co. Ltd., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fell while carrying picks and a pick ran into his side causing injuries from which he died on the 4th June.
COPE T. - 1891 - 23/10/1891 – Age 36 – Collier. Swaithe Main, Edmunds and Swaithe Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Crushed by cage.
COPE William - 1892 - 25/10/1892 – Age 60 – Shunter. Tibshelf, Babbington Coal Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Crushed between the buffers of two waggon, which appear to have been moved whilst deceased was crossing between them.
COPELAND Christopher Robertson - 1899 - 06/12/1899 – Age 31 – Stonetipper. Acklington, Acklington Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased after assisting to plumb the shaft which was being deepened was told to take a torch lamp on to the heap but instead of going up the steps he unaccountably walked straight into the shaft the fencing of which had not been replaced after they had finished the plumbing. The accident occurred at night but the place was well lighted.
COPELAND James - 1895 - 06/05/1895 – Age 13 – Coupler. Brancepeth, Strakers and Love, Brancepeth, Co. Durham. He was ascending, with 5 other boys in a cage, when he appears to have slipped and fallen out and caught between the cage and the bunting.

COPPING Robert James - 1893 - 09/08/1893 – Age 27 – Inclineman. Eston (metalliferous), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. A full tub became uncoupled on an incline and ran back crushing him in such a manner that he died a few hours after.
CORBETT George - 1896 - 25/01/1896 – Age 58 – Carter. Epsom chalk (quarry), Executors of E Catchpole, Surrey. Fall of a small amount of chalk from the side of the pit where they were working. 2 killed on the spot.
CORBETT Matthew - 1894 - 27/06/1894 – Age 40 – Shaftman. Home Farm, Hamilton McCulloch and Co., Lanarkshire. Scaffold fell in shaft owing to crane running amain. 3 killed.
CORBETT Thomas - 1894 - 21/09/1894 – Age 43 – Dayman. Newstead, Newstead Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof. Deceased had pulled some coal off the face liberating a large quantity of roof which fell upon him.
CORCORAN T. - 1896 - 23/04/1896 – Age 45 – Packer. Darefield Main, Mitchell Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Crushed between a corf when lowering and a bar. He was in front of his corf.
CORDON John - 1890 - 10/06/1890 – Age 30 – Stallman. Bestwood, Bestwood Coal and Iron Co., Bestwood, Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof. Knocking a prop out with a hammer instead of using his ringer and chain.
CORDY Moses - 1891 - 04/01/1891 – Age 49 – Collier. Kingswood, Kingswood and Parkfield Collieries Co. Ltd., Bristol, Gloucester. piece of coal fell from the face while he was engaged wedging it down. He had just before fired a shot.

CORKHILL John - 1895 - 01/10/1895 – Age 44 – Miner. Snaefell (metalliferous), Snaefell Mining Co. Ltd., Isle of Man. Whilst he was getting down rock, loosened by a blast in an overhand stope, a huge piece which he thought was safe fell upon him and killed him on the spot.
CORKHILL Robert (non-fatal) - 1893 - 29/03/1893 – Age 54 – Engineman. Foxdale (metalliferous). While making some trials, with a newly erected condenser, he inadvertently placed himself so that he was struck by a moving guide rod. Leg broken below the knee. 4 months off.
CORLETT John (injured) - 1897 - 10/05/1897. Snaefell lead, Snaefell Lead Mining Co. Ltd., Isle of Man. On descending the shaft, to go to their work on a Monday morning, they were overcome by carbonic oxide generated by an underground fire, of which they were wholly unaware. The timber in a level had taken fire accidentally probably from a lighted candle end stuck up against it on the previous Saturday. 19 killed and 5 injured of whom 1 died 26th May.
CORNALL George - 1893 - 24/10/1893 – Age 47 – Deputy. Lofthouse (metalliferous), Pease and Partners Ltd., Loftus, Yorkshire. Severely cut on face and head by a shot blowing through from another place. Died on the 29th.
CORNELIUS John - 1896 – 27/11/1896 – Age 44 – Miner. Bellfield, William Barr and Sons, Lanarkshire. While taking out some cartridges of compressed gunpowder from his canister containing 2.5 lbs., a spark fell from his lamp which was on his Cap, into the canister igniting the contents and causing an explosion.
CORNER Thomas - 1895 – 12/09/1895 – Age 41 – Fireman. Hulton, Hulton Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Alleged to have been slightly injured in Feb. further alleged to have strained himself on the 12th September. Died on 27th from peritonitis not proved to have arisen from the accident.

He had allowed the clod to overhang the coal face without securely propping it when a portion of it fell upon the deceased from a break. Otherwise the place was well timbered.
CORRIGAN Peter - 1899 - 19/12/1899 – Age 40 – Miner. Cadzow, Cadzow Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. When bringing a loaded hutch, from the face of a low stooping place, deceased was in front of it and was crush against the timber.
CORRIGAN Robert - 1896 - 03/09/1896 – Age 52 – Collier. Ashtons Green, Bromilow Foster and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A fall of roof rock occurred in the wide-work face capping a prop and crushing the deceased. The fireman had drawn his attention to the roof an hour previously and had asked him to timber it.
