As he turned to leave it a large stone fell at his side tilted over on him and knocked him down fracturing his thigh and some of his ribs one or more of which pierced his lung. He died two days afterwards.

Deceased was sitting on the side of the road, to put a drag in the tub whilst it was passing, and in doing so he was hit on the side of the head with the tub. 1.00 pm.

Crushed between two trucks, he was attempting to pass between a truck standing in a siding and those of his set which were in motion, but there was not room and he was crushed to death.

He was engaged in kirving a jud when a portion of the coal fell away at a cleat and injured his spine. No sprag was being use as should have been the case there being two loose ends to the jud.

PATTISON William H. - 1894 - 03/12/1894 – Age 19 – Putter. West Shield Row, Owners of South Derwent Colliery, Shield Row, Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Fall of stone, the roof is good and as a rule little timber is required. The stone fell at the junction of two roads.

PAUL George - 1896 - 21/11/1896 – Age 39 – Collier. Avan Hill, Avan Hill Colliery Co., Glamorgan. Fall at face, fireclay 5 foot 9 inches long 15 inches wide 10 inches thick. While edging coal down face not spragged.
PAUL James H. (non-fatal) - 1893 - 30/06/1893 – Age 22 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mine Adventurers, Illogan, Cornwall. A stone fell from the side of the shaft and injured his arm while he was engaged at the 150-fathom level erecting a staging.
PAUL William - 1897 - 02/03/1897 – Age 66 - Loco. Driver. Parkhead, Glasgow Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Collision on branch railway with Caledonian Railway loco. caused by both drivers neglecting their instructions.
PAULL Frederick (non-fatal) - 1891 - 03/10/1891 – Age 17 – Trammer. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. When bringing a full train on to the trip plat, with another trammer, he walked backwards and fell into the "plat", they having left it uncovered when last there.
PAULL Henry - 1892 - 05/04/1892 – Age 17 – Miner. East Pool (metalliferous), East Pool Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. When going down a footway, from the 190 to the 200 fathom level through an old "gunnis," he slipped and fell about six fathoms. He was carrying some nails down to a comrade, who was in the 200-fathom level repairing a chuck or pass, and seems to have kept them in his hand, which prevented his having a firm grip of the ladder, which was in good repair though steep underlying about 9 to 12 inches to the fathom.

PAYNE Joshua Moor - 1898 - 01/08/1898 – Age 23 – Putter. Hamsteels, Trustees of Joseph Johnson, Co.Durham. When taking an empty tub inbye it got off the way and displaced some timbers and this liberated a large stone in the roof which caught and killed him.

PEACOCK David - 1891 - 11/01/1891 – Age 40 – Engineer. St. Helens, St. Helens Colliery & Brick Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Scalded to death by the bursting of a steam pipe. 4.20 pm. 2 killed.
PEACOCK John - 1895 - 22/10/1895 – Age 49 – Roadman. Gibfield Arley, Fletcher Burrows and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. In engine plane downbrow, cleaning road, a descending empty train caught him, either he delayed getting out of the way or was standing by side of road instead of going into the manholes which were there for the purpose.

PEACOCK William J. - 1896 - 29/09/1896 – Age 16 - Flat lad. South Co.Durham, South Durham Coal Co., Co.Durham. Run over by a full set of tubs on a self acting incline and killed. He had got to a refuge hole, to let the empty set pass him, but had evidently forgotten the full one coming down, stepped out and was caught.

PEARCE E. - 1896 - 27/04/1896 – Age 25 – Collier. Houghton Main, Houghton Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Walking close behind some corves when the rope broke and two corves ran over him.
PEARCE Edward - 1892 - 24/09/1892 – Age 27 – Collier. Brynkinalt, Brynkinalt Collieries Ltd., Chirk, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was clearing his top coal, which he had just drawn, when a stone fell from between the props he had just drawn from between two slips in the roof.
PEARCE George (non-fatal) - 1891 - 05/05/1891 – Age 30 – Miner. Holmbush (metalliferous), Callington United Mines Ltd., Callington, Cornwall. A small stone came down the shaft and struck him on the leg in the plat at the 190. Very little notice was taken of the accident at the time, there being scarcely a mark visible on the leg but the man was laid up for six weeks through it.

PEARCE John - 1891 - 23/03/1891 – Age 28 – Labourer. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By the cage descending upon him while attempting to cross the shaft bottom instead of passing through the travelling road which was close by. It was his first shift and he had just descended.
PEARCE John - 1894 - 10/04/1894 – Age 31 – Collier. Dowlais Fochriw No. 1, Dowlais Iron Co., Fochriw, Glamorgan. Found fatally injured on main drift. He had been riding between the loaded trams of a journey and had either fallen or been thrown off and run over. He was not the rider on that incline.

PEARCE Samuel - 1897 - 23/01/1897 – Age 34 - Runner on. Priors Lee Woodhouse, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Shropshire. While putting a full tub into the cage another tub followed and crushed him against the cage. He had neglected to put a locker in the wheel of the second tub. Died 5th February 1897.

PEARCE T.H. - 1897 - 09/11/1897 – Age 13 - Door boy. Ocean, Eastern Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While walking down a gradient of 2 inches per yard, in front of a pony and tram with two sprags in it, the haulier being behind the deceased fell, and was trodden upon by the pony.
PEARCE Thomas - 1896 - 03/12/1896 – Age 56 – Byeman. Westminster, Westminster & Brymbo Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were engaged knocking out timber, in an abandoned road, when the roof gave way to a slip capping two props and burying him. It was recommended at the inquest that capping of timber in old workings should be done by practical men and that the underlooker should instruct them as to the best way to accomplish such work. 2 killed.

PEARSE George - 1899 - 17/02/1899 – Age 28 – Labourer. Railway Cutting, Shirebrook Quarry, WH Hutchinson, Derby. Deceased was working in a railway cutting and neglected to go to a place of safety during the firing of some shots. A piece of stone from one of the shots struck the deceased and killed him.

PEARSON Archibald (non-fatal) - 1892 - 23/11/1892 – Drawer. Cairnhill No. 6, William Baird and Co., Airdrie, Lanarkshire. While pushing out a hutch he was jammed by another drawer overtaking him.
PEARSON David - 1894 - 14/11/1894 – Age 45 – Miner. Cliffrigg & Slacks (metalliferous), William Winn, Great Ayton, Co.Durham. A heavy fall of whinstone from the roof of the mine. 2 killed.
PEARSON Edward - 1897 – 06/05/1897 – Age 50 – Waterman. East Hetton, Walter Scott Ltd., Co.Durham. Inundation of water in Cassop way of Harvey seam owing to working holing into old workings in Cassop Colliery. 10 killed.
PEARSON Ellis - 1892 – 28/11/1892 – Age 16 – Pony putter. Seghill, Jospeh Laycock and Co., Seghill, Northumberland. Inquest attended. It appears that the boy was driving two tubs down a slight incline when the pony stumbled and ran against the props, knocking two out which caused a fall of stone and injuries to Pearson. Died 17th January 1893.

PEARSON John - 1891 - 27/07/1891 – Age 17 – Driver. Newstead, Newstead Colliery Co., Newstead, Nottinghamshire. Crushed by loaded tubs on an engine plane. Accident caused by the breaking of a draw bar of a tub which allowed them to run away. 8.30 am.
PEARSON R.M. - 1891 - 13/06/1891 – Age 49 – Master sinker. Edmondsley, Edmondsley Coal Co. Ltd., Chester-le-Street, Co.Durham. The banksman in bringing a kibble on a tram back from the waste heap ran it against a chock which upset the kibble and threw the tram down the shaft, 2 killed. 8.15 am.
PEARSON Robert - 1890 - 21/04/1890 – Age 15 - Washer boy. Birley, Sheffield Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Walking across a hopper of slack. The surface of the slack gave way under him and he fell into it and was suffocated before he was discovered and could be rescued.
PEARSON Robert jnr. - 1896 - 28/07/1896 – Age 23 – Stoneman. Lily Drift, Joseph Cowpen and Co., Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. Explosion of gunpowder.
PEARSON Samuel - 1899 - 23/11/1899 – Age 46 – Underlooker. Point of Ayrshire, Point of Ayr Collieries Co. Ltd., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Two miners using safety lamps were driving a heading, which made gas very freely, when a small iron wedge flew back breaking a lamp glass causing an explosion of firedamp which injured the two men and setting the brattice on fire. An hour later, when the manager and underlooker were trying to put out the burning brattice, a second explosion took place causing their death. 2 killed.

PEAT William - 1893 - 30/01/1893 – Age 17 - Loco. Fireman. East Hetton, Walter Scott Ltd., Coxhoe, Co.Durham. Got his foot fast in a crossing. Several waggons ran over and took his leg off. He died shortly after.
PEAY John - 1894 - 01/01/1894 – Age 18 – Trammer. East Cannock, East Cannock Colliery Co., Hednesford, Staffordshire. Crushed by full tub against the side of the road on a descending gradient.
PECK Arthur - 1895 - 11/03/1895 – Age 21 – Haulier. Terrace, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. When descending in a cage, with seven other men, a splinter apparently from a brattice in the shaft penetrated his body (at the rectum) and entered upwards to the chest. Lived about 18 hours afterwards. The place whence the splinter came could not be traced nor can the manner in which the accident occurred be accurately explained.

PEEBLES David - 1899 - 07/04/1899 – Age 38 – Miner. Tillycoultry, Alloa Coal Co., Clackmannan. While taking out a piece of bottom coal the top coal fell on the deceased. The injury was supposed to be slight but he died from its effects nine days afterwards.
PEELE Matthew - 1896 - 21/04/1896 – Age 53 – Hewer. Brandon, Strakers and Love, Co.Durham. While taking the last coal off, in a broken jud, a stone fell from the roof and killed him.
PEGG Joseph - 1895 - 12/11/1895 – Age 38 – Labourer. Alma, GW Turner, Derbyshire. Deceased was using an iron bar to move a railway wagon from another. He stood across the rail, the bar slipped, and the wagon moving backwards caused him to be crushed between the two wagons.
PEGG Solomon - 1896 - 05/03/1896 – Age 70 – Screenman. Albert Derbyshire, Silkstone Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was proceeding to his work and in passing along the screen stage he fell through one of the loading holes.
PEGLER James - 1896 - 18/03/1896 – Age 62 – Sawyer. Lewis Merthyr, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fatally injured by a piece of wood he was sawing striking him in the abdomen.

PELLOW Richard (injured) - 1890 - 31/05/1890 – Age 64 – Labourer. Drakewells (metalliferous), Drakewells Mining Co., Gunnislake, Cornwall. The man was employed in watching the calciners and while lifting one of the dampers a piece of iron fell on his leg and broke it.
PEMBERTON George - 1893 – 27/04/1893 – Age 23 – Filler. Hafod, Ruabon Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was in the act of filling a tub of coal, near the face, which had been standing a few days. The coal had been holed about 4 feet with sprags set about 4 feet apart when a portion of the coal gave way over the sprags crushing the deceased against the tub. Long sprags will be used in future as well as short ones.
PENALUNA William (injured) - 1890 – 02/04/1890 – Age 34 – Miner. Wheal Basset (metalliferous), Wheal Basset Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Penaluna and his comrade were on a stage boring when the former accidentally fell off and received severe injuries to his head.
PENDER John - 1896 – 25/01/1896 – Age 16 – Drawer. Blackston, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Stirling. Fall of roof stone at longwall from above tramway which was laid along the face.
PENDER Mark - 1894 – 25/05/1894 – Age 18 – Brakesman. Hutton Henry, Hutton Henry Coal Co. Ltd., Wingate, Co.Durham. Severe sprain causing rupture while pushing a tub into tippler resulting in his death on the 6th June.
PENDLEBURY James - 1898 – 17/09/1898 – Age 48 – Fireman. Bridgewater No. 2, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place. A large stone, in falling, struck a loosened prop which he was drawing, and it wedged him against another fast prop.
PENDLEBURY John - 1894 – 02/04/1894 – Age 35 – Collier. Worsley Menses, Worsley Menses Colliery Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was killed by a fall of roof in the shunt where they had considered the roof good and had not been timbered for a distance of 5 yards.
PENDLEBURY William - 1891 - 13/09/1891 – Age 18 - Bank rider. Victoria 7 Foot, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Atherton, Lancashire. Injured by the lurry on which four tubs are placed in the brow; he dropped his sounding rod and fell off when endeavouring to recover it. Inspection and inquiry.
PENDLETON John - 1895 - 01/05/1895 – Age 21 – Dataller. Bestwood, Bestwood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Nottinghamshire. Deceased was taking a tram full of dirt into a stall when it overpowered him and crushed him. He was violating a rule of the mine by being in the front of the tram when passing down an inclined roadway.

PENGELLY John (non-fatal) - 1891 - 24/07/1891 – Age 25 – Miner. Phoenix United (metalliferous), Phoenix United Mining Co., Liskeard, Cornwall. Had his arm broken by an accidental blow from the mallet which his comrade was using whilst boring.
PENGILLEY Michael - 1899 - 06/05/1899 – Age 53 – Miner. Eston Ironstone, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., North Yorkshire. He was drilling a hole under some overhanging stone to bring it down when it suddenly fell upon him and killed him.
PENHALE Malachi D. (injured) - 1890 - 03/07/1890 - Miner agent. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Wheal Agar Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Captain Penhale was walking across a tramway, on a plank which gave way, precipitating him quite 15 fathoms. Besides a broken leg his injuries were not serious. The slipping of the board could not be accounted for.

PENMAN Archibald - 1897 - 11/11/1897 – Age 35 – Labourer. Cowdenbeath, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was engaged with others in putting a belt on a pulley, in connection with a coal washing machine, and in returning he passed through another belt and stumbling he was caught and drawn into the pulley.

PENNIE William (non-fatal) - 1892 - 05/04/1892 – Age 24 – Miner. Wheal Eliza Consols (metalliferous), Stephen Barker and others, St. Austell, Cornwall. A charge of dynamite, hot having blown, intended to utilise it and he was extending the same when some of the unexploded dynamite exploded and injured him.
PENNINGTON George - 1899 - 25/08/1899 – Age 30 – Collier. Bamfurlong Cross, Tetley Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were engaged working a piece of coal, that had been left back next to a fault, and were about completing it when the roof collapsed burying the deceased and capping the bars and props, for a distance of five yards square, the roof being very weak at that part. 2 killed.
PENNINGTON J. - 1895 - 30/10/1895 – Age 18 – Driver. Middleton, Middleton Estate and Coal Co., Yorkshire. While attaching corves to endless rope one of the corves ran over him.
PENNINGTON James - 1891 - 28/08/1891 – Age 45 – Dataler. Crop, St. Helens Colliery Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was cleaning up a return airway when he disturbed the packing on the high side which allowed the roof to fall and bury him. An examination of the place was made by the underlooker five minutes previous to the accident. 11.45 am.
PENNINGTON James - 1896 - 25/09/1896 – Age 20 – Collier. Ashton Green, Bromilow Foster and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were walking down the haulage downbrow, to their work, when a portion of the roof gave way nearly a foot thick burying the deceased. There was a joint at that point which had not been timbered. The officials had seen no signs of it giving way. The wide work was approaching this part on the lower side which must have caused a sudden crush of the roof over the brow. At the inquest it was recommended that the roadway should be barred. 2 killed.
PENNINGTON Joseph - 1892 - 17/02/1892 – Age 24 - Waggon lowerer. Moss, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was caught in the cog-wheels of the slack elevator, whilst proceeding to oil the main shaft, when the machinery was in motion which was against the rules.
PENNINGTON Simeon - 1895 - 11/01/1895 – Age 33 – Collier. Chanters, Fletcher Burrows and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Whilst entering the cage, at intermediate mouthing before signals, the green cage was lowered on to the top of the cage which crushed the deceased and knocked him out, he was found on a bearer 5 yards below. Engineman declared signal to lower was given. Hooker-on and two men along with deceased were prosecuted. Former fined 20s., latter 10s. each.
PENNINGTON Thomas - 1897 - 20/02/1897 – Age 35 – Dataller. Billinge Lane, Winstanley Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were engaged changing steel girders and repairing the main level when the roof gave way from a break on the side of the level capping five girders and burying the deceased.
PENNINGTON Thomas Frederick - 1890 - 09/06/1890 – Age 24 – Dayman. Ashtonfield Trencherbone, Bridgewater Trustees, Little Hulton, Lancashire. Died 12th by coal and clod from the side where he was ridding up.
PENNY Samuel - 1895 - 25/01/1895 – Age 30 – Miner. Phoenix United (metalliferous), Phoenix United Mining Co., Cornwall. He and his comrade (Stephens) were working in an over band stope, driving to meet a place which was being driven by another "pare of men." Stephens went to sound how far they were from holing and did so with an iron bar in a hole not knowing that it had partly miss fire. The remaining gelignite exploded injuring him slightly and blowing through to the other side, killed Penny.

PENNYCOOK William (non-fatal) - 1891 - 24/04/1891 – Age 14 - Coal cleaner. Mauricewood, Shotts Iron Co., Edinburgh. Injured by machinery. 50 days off.
PENPRAGE Edwin - 1897 - 22/12/1897 – Age 37 – Miner. Carn Brea Tin, Carn Brea and Tincroft Ltd., Cornwall. They had charged and fired three holes which had apparently exploded. It was however found that one of the shots had not done its work, a clearing out of the hole, to recharge it, some of the gelignite exploded killing this man and seriously injuring another.
PENROSE John (non-fatal) - 1891 - 13/05/1891 – Age 53 – Miner. Callington United (metalliferous), Callington United Mines Ltd., Callington, Cornwall. As he was preparing to bore a hole a stone came out from just above it and struck him on the arm.
PENTLAND David - 1890 - 01/09/1890 – Age 40 – Miner. Whitehill, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Fall of stone, pick pierced his head. 1.45 pm.
PEPPER David - 1891 - 15/05/1891 – Age 32 – Dataler. Apedale, Birley Midland Coal Coke and Iron Co. Ltd., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fell down cage dip, angle 39 degrees, while timbering.
PERCIVAL James (survivor) - 1898 - 19/04/1898 – Age 23 – Holer. Whitwick No. 5, Whitwick Colliery Co., Leicestershire. A fire broke out on the main airway of the mine and developed so rapidly that only six men, including the deputy, out of a total of 41 who were at work beyond the fire were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.
PERCIVAL James - 1893 - 10/05/1893 – Age 33 – Collier. Parr, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The shaft is 160 yards deep. The cages were fitted with two wire guides only and the cage appears to have swayed and caught at a bearer and threw the deceased out as the cage was ascending. The clearance was 18 inches. The jury recommended strongly three guides to each cage.
PERCIVAL Peter - 1898 - 12/10/1898 – Age 39 – Collier. Foggs, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in roadway, close to top of jig. Deceased was jigging a tub at the time. A prop carelessly knocked out by a drawer contributed to the cause.

PERKIN William Henry (non-fatal) - 1892 - 22/10/1892 – Age 22 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. The gig in which he and three others were descending to the 375-fathom level was suddenly interrupted by a plank laid across the shaft at the 302-fathom level. The plank not being strong enough to sustain the blow broke, and the splinters injured him seriously. The others escaped with a slight shaking. A reward of £5 was offered for information which would lead to the detection of the person or persons who placed the plank across the shaft, but it had not the desired effect.
PERKINS John - 1897 - 18/01/1897 – Age 18 – Collier. Llwynypia No. 3, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face clift, 8 foot x 5 foot from 10 to 1 inch thick, where the roof was propped. In pillar and stall. No. 3 Rhondda.
PERRETT Stephen - 1895 - 03/05/1895 – Age 51 – Collier. Powell Duffyn, George Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of clift, 3.5 feet x 2 feet x 15 inches thick in middle, from a slant between a road prop 3.5 foot back and the coal face as he was barring out a hack slip of coal. Six feet seam.

PERROT William - 1895 - 17/12/1895 – Age 44 – Collier. Elliott East, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof at the face from an unseen slip and a smooth bed above. The place appeared to have been generally well timbered.
PERRY Andrew - 1899 - 06/09/1899 – Age 23 – Loader. Nailstone, Nailstone Colliery Co., Leicester. Deceased was pushing an empty tub up an inclined roadway when he slipped down and bruised himself. He died on 8th October and the Coroners jury returned a verdict that ‘he died from blood poisoning following an abscess caused by violent accident sustained.’.
PERRY David - 1897 - 31/03/1897 – Age 27 – Labourer. Admiralty Stone (quarry), Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, Portland, Dorset. Fatally crushed between the counter balance carrier and the trolley of a travelling steam crane as the crane was being turned round. Apparently due to the absent mindedness on his part.
PERRY John - 1891 - 07/05/1891 – Age 24 – Collier. Newbridge Rhondda, Crawshay Bros. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (8 foot long x 4.5 foot wide cliff) from a slip just worked under and inside row of props 5 foot back. No. 1 Rhondda seam. Long wall.
PERRY John - 1897 - 09/09/1897 – Age 53 – Stoneman. Whitburn, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Inquest attended. Deceased, and others, had fired a shot in the left hand side which had no doubt loosened the stone on the other side where another shot was prepared. A jagged stone had been left on the top of a plank and the deceased decided to get it down. In doing so he loosened the stone on the righthand side of the place which came away upon him. There was no necessity for him to go under the stone.

PERRY William - 1892 - 23/08/1892 – Collier. Chanters, Fletcher Burrows and Co. Ltd., Atherton, Lancashire. Taking down coal. When coal fell the deceased stepped back, coal caught a prop and knocked it out, the prop caught the deceased.
PERRY William - 1894 - 28/06/1894 – Age 22 – Collier. Graig Fawr, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. Fall of roof at the face of his working place. The coal is only about 2 feet thick and so far as could be judged afterwards the place had been fairly well timbered.

PERRYMAN D. - 1893 - 06/05/1893 – Age 18 – Trammer. Wombwell Main, Wombwell Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Drowned in sump.
PERVIS William - 1894 - 05/09/1894 – Age 37 – Deputy. Pelton, Lord Dunsaney and Partners, Chester-le-Street, Co.Durham. He had finished drawing a broken jud and while examining the outlet a stone fell on to him.
PETERS Ralph - 1890 - 13/10/1890 – Age 17 – Drawer. Norley, Norley Coal and Cannel Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was holing for his father when the loose end of the coal fell on him. They had holed 12 feet across and a foot under but had no sprags set.
PETERS William - 1893 - 18/07/1893 – Age 57 – Lander. West Kitty (metalliferous), West Kitty Mine Adventurers, St. Agnes, Cornwall. While engaged tipping ore into the dressing floor, from the gangway, the tram toppled over and he fell with it 17 feet to the level of the ground and was killed. A chain was provided originally to prevent such an occurrence but its use had been neglected for some time past.

PETRIE Thomas (non-fatal) - 1890 - 20/06/1890 – Age 13 - Hanger on. Little Raith, Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Struck by tub. 48 days off.
PETTIFER William - 1896 - 22/08/1896 – Age 57 – Collier. Harrison & Woodburn, Madeley Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof while engaged in retimbering a heading in Rough 7 foot seam.
PETTIFORD Thomas - 1890 - 31/10/1890 – Age 18 – Haulier. Risca, London and South Wales Coal Co. Ltd., Risca, Monmouth. In consequence of the points not being right at the end of a stall road which he was driving past the tram jumped the rails and crushed him against the corner. Having left them right for his return journey, when going out, and not being aware that anyone in the meanwhile had to take a tram into this stall he omitted to check that the points were right for him.

PHEE James - 1898 - 29/06/1898 – Age 34 – Brusher. Bothwell Park, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. While repairing a road a stone fell from the side.
PHELPS Ebenezer - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 22 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.
