PROBERTS James Thomas - 1899 - 16/11/1899 – Age 28 – Collier. Agecroft, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in self acting incline when about to commence repairing two broken bars; six bars were reeled out, fall
22 foot long. 2 killed.

PROBERTS John - 1897 - 03/03/1897 – Age 59 – Dataller. Pendleton, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Removing fall in airway, between two working places, a stone slid from top of fall upon him. Stone 3 foot x 1.5 foot x 8 inches. Carelessly undermined stone. Died 6th Mar.

PROBY Thomas (injured) - 1894 - 28/03/1894 – Age 30 – Timberer. Ubberley, Chatterley Whitfield Collieries Ltd., Bucknall, Staffordshire. Fall from side of level in Hard Mine while repairing. Knee crushed.

PROCTER Walter - 1894 - 13/04/1894 – Age 22 – Loader. Audley, W Rigby and Co., Audley, Staffordshire. Fall of roof at working face from a slip in a level heading in 8 foot Banbury Seam.

PROCTOR Fred - 1897 - 26/02/1897 – Age 26 – Repairer. Apedale, Burley Midland Coal and Coke Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Large fall of roof while they were repairing a jig dip in the Bullhurst seam. Inclination 38 deg., 2 killed.

PROCTOR John (injured) - 1894 - 01/08/1894 – Age 31 – Shunter. Shelton Deep, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Hanley, Staffordshire. Fell while attempting to cross line between horse and truck his leg was run over by the truck causing a compound fracture.

PROCTOR N. - 1894 - 02/02/1894 – Age 45 – Bowling, Bowling Iron Co., Bradford, Yorkshire. Crushed by waggons. died 12th.

PROSSER David - 1895 - 25/01/1895 – Age 14 - Collier’s boy. Dowlais Fochriw No. 2, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Struck by a runaway tram on the main dip drift while on his way to work. The stop block at top had been opened but how or by whom there was no evidence to prove.

PROSSER David W. - 1893 - 11/04/1893 – Age 16 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an underground fire. 63 killed.

PROSSER Edwin - 1898 - 24/02/1898 – Age 59 – Collier. Cefn Brithdir, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof in his working place. A portion of a Bell stone, breaking off at a prop which was set under it, dislocated his hip joint. He died under an operation to reduce the dislocation on the 27th.

PROSSER Ernest Thomas - 1893 - 11/04/1893 – Age 18 – Collier. Great Western. Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an underground fire. 63 killed.

PROSSER Isaac - 1898 - 29/09/1898 – Age 64 – Overman. Forge Slope, Blaenavon Co. Ltd., Monmouth. While giving directions, for removing some additional side coal in the Main Heading which was being reopened after the strike, a fall of roof occurred killing him instantly.

PROSSER John - 1891 - 09/05/1891 – Age 24 – Loader. Shelton No. 1 Rowhurst, Shelton Iron Steel and Coke Co. Ltd., Hanley, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp caused by a gob fire.

PROSSER John - 1896 - 05/02/1896 – Age 45 – Collier. Naval Landy, Naval Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While adjusting rope on drum, of small haulage engine, the blast (compressed air) was turned on accidentally by the loose rope catching the lever and deceased was drawn on to the drum and killed. Another man assisting was injured.

PROSSER Thomas - 1893 - 10/11/1893 – Age 68 - Waggon repairer. South Wales, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Cwmtillery, Monmouth. A Great Western loco was about to take a train of loaded trucks from the branch line sidings and pushed up the waggons sufficiently to allow the sprags to be withdrawn. Deceased who was thoughtlessly leaning with his arm round one of the buffers was caught between two of them and died 12th Feb. 1894 from injuries received.

PROSSER Thomas - 1898 - 27/09/1898 – Age 37 – Haulier. Pochin, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Crushed when bringing a full tram along a stall road, he appears to have fallen in front of it. When found he was dead and lying across the road in front of the tram to which the horse was attached and standing quietly. When last seen he was walking in front of the horse.

PROSSER William - 1891 - 04/11/1891 – Age 26 - Rubbish tipper. Naval, Naval Colliery Co. Ltd., Penygraig, Glamorgan. While riding on full tram up the rubbish tip, an incline a tram wheel broke and deceased was crushed between the tram and a sheave. Riding is forbidden. Died December.

PROSSER William - 1894 - 20/07/1894 – Age 56 – Engineman. Aber Rhondda, Aber Rhondda Coal Co. Ltd., Porth, Glamorgan. Crushed by the crank or pumprod of a pumping engine which he attended during the night shift. It is
supposed he had been trying to save a dog which he kept as the dog was found dead under the rod.

PROTEOUS David - 1891 - 14/03/1891 – Age 24 - Boiler fireman. Loanhead, Shotts Iron Co., Edinburgh. Crushed by cage.

PROTHEROE Ben - 1896 - 28/04/1896 – Age 45 – Repairer. Ferndale No. 2, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall while repairing an airway in Five feet seam.

PROUD Ralph - 1892 - 03/11/1892 – Age 25 – Rolleywayman. Derwent, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Medmosley, Co.Durham. While pulling rope ends together, with a winch, the engine was started by mistake and the handle reversing struck deceased violently on the head.

PROUD James - 1893 - 22/12/1893 – Age 17 – Collier. Nantemelyn, Nantemelyn Colliery Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of rock roof (11 foot x 9 foot) from a clay joint in a narrow heading. No timbers had been stood. Proud died 5th Jan. 1894. Yard seam. 2 killed.

PROUT Thomas - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 35 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

PROVAN James (non-fatal) - 1890 - 16/05/1890 – Chainrunner. Neilston No. 3, Neilston Coal Co., Kilsyth, Ayrshire. Injured by water chest on which he was riding.

PROVIS George - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 33 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

PROW Janet - 1898 - 31/05/1898 – Age 16 - Hutch runner. Carronrigg, AG Morre and Co., Stirling. Caught by the spur wheels of the haulage engine after crawling through fencing with other girls to take a meal. Female.

PRYDE Abraham - 1895 - 11/10/1895 – Age 21 – Miner. Loanhead (coal and ironstone), Shotts Iron Co., Edinburgh. Fall of stone. 2 killed.

PRYDE Charles - 1893 - 07/02/1893 – Age 17 - Dook footer. Newbattle, Lothian Coal Co., Edinburgh. Crushed by tub.

PRYDE James - 1898 - 28/06/1898 – Age 62 – Miner. Newbattle, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased attempted to climb into one of a train of railway vans while in motion, for the purpose of being conveyed to his work. He fell, and two of the vans passed over his legs, causing injuries which resulted fatally.

PRYDE John (non-fatal) - 1891 - 28/10/1891 – Age 56 – Miner. Addiwell, Youngs Paraffin Light & Mineral Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Explosion of gunpowder. Not returned.

PRYDE Mungo - 1894 - 10/07/1894 – Age 23 – Dook headman. Newbattle, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Crushed by tub.

PRYDE Robert - 1892 - 02/08/1892 – Age 36 – Miner. Newbattle, Lothian Coal Co., Edinburgh. Explosion of shot.

PRYDE Robert - 1893 - 08/08/1893 – Age 20 – Miner. Donibristle, Donibristle Colliery Co., Fife. Fall of coal.

PRYOR James Bennett - 1894 - 24/01/1894 – Age 26 - Asst. timberman. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mine Adventurers, Illogan, Cornwall. He fell about 20 fathoms in the shaft, having apparently overbalanced himself
while engaged casing off the drawing shaft from the footway. Improved methods for working in the shafts appear to me to be desirable in many of the Cornish mines.

PRYOR John (non-fatal) - 1894 - 17/10/1894 – Age 38 – Shaftsman. Polberro (metalliferous), Polberro Mine Adventurers, St Agnes, Cornwall. Piece of timber fell and injured him while working in the shaft.

PUGH David - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 27 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

PUGH George - 1890 - 30/01/1890 – Age 20 – Haulier. South Griffin, John Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Blaina, Monmouth. At a double parting on the main horse road, in the Big Vein, he was found by another haulier under a tram which was off the rails. It is not exactly known how he came to he there but it is presumed that he was, as usual, riding on the "gun," and fell from it and was run over. The road is rather steep just there but he had sprags in the wheels of the tram.

PUGH George - 1897 - 21/05/1897 – Age 55 – Miner. East Roman Gravels Lead, Hope Valley Mining Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Explosion of a shot of gunpowder while he was attempting to unram it.

PUGH Henry - 1896 - 21/05/1896 – Age 20 – Haulier. Cymmer, Cymmer Colliery Co., Glamorgan. Found dead under loaded tram (his last journey for the day) which he was bringing out on a level road.

PUGH Hugh (injured) - 1894 - 04/07/1894 – Age 32 – Miner. Oakeley (slate). Explosion of remnants of a charge of guncotton while he was drilling a new hole. He had chiselled off the rock around the old socket and be believed that no part of it remained. Face and left arm injured. 23 weeks off.

PUGH Hugh - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 27 – Timberman. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

PUGH Hugh - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 32 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

PUGH Hugh - 1899 - 29/09/1899 – Age 19 – Miner. Rhiwgereiddyn Slate, Towyn Co. Ltd., Montgomery. While he was quarrying in a part of the mine, worked opencast, a stone fell and struck him on the head causing him to fall from a ledge a distance of 4 yd. Died the same evening.

PUGH J. T. - 1892 - 30/09/1982 – Age 32 – Trammer. Houghton Main, Houghton Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of coal 2 killed.

PUGH James - 1890 - 30/04/1890 – Age 32 – Miner. Parker, Bradford Colliery Co., Bradford, Lancashire. Died same day at Manchester Infirmary from injuries received by a slip from the roof.

PUGH John (injured) - 1890 - 02/03/1890 – Age 28 – Miner. Rhosesmor (metalliferous). After firing a shot in a rise he went up to see what it had done and a piece of the foot wall came away and scraped his leg. 3 weeks off.

PUGH John (non-fatal) - 1893 - 13/10/1893 – Age 72 – Labourer. Halkyn (metalliferous). Fell from a cart while loading hay, broke small bone of his arm. Not yet resumed work.

PUGH John - 1891 - 11/09/1891 – Age 55 – Labourer. Bute Merthyr, Lady Margaret Marquess of Bute, Treherbert, Glamorgan. Fall of face, slip of coal 6 foot long 2 foot thick, from between two cross-breaks, the face being insufficiently spragged. Deceased was stowing rubbish during night shift, Yard seam 2 foot 10 inches thick. Long wall.

PUGH John - 1896 - 07/01/1896 – Age 63 - Lamp locker. Castle, Crawshay Bros., Cyfartha Ltd., Glamorgan. Died on 8th September from “inflammation of the bladder, his death being hastened by the effect of the accident on 7th Jan. by striking his eye against a certain bracket.” Notice sent to inspector after death.

PUGH John - 1899 - 24/03/1899 – Age 25 – Collier. Snyed No. 2, Snyed Colliery and Brickworks Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of coal and roof at longwall face in Mossfield Seam. He was wedging coal off the face when a goth went off and some coal fell and knocked out a post and then the roof fell on him from a slip.

PUGH Joseph - 1896 - 06/06/1896 – Age 38 – Pikeman. Mud Hall, Dudley Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Fall of roof when carelessly drawing timber.

PUGH Thomas - 1895 - 09/09/1895 – Age 31 – Sinker. Dowlais, Cardiff Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Fell out of bowk, while ascending the sinking pit the bowk, having caught a byat supporting the pumps. 6 killed.

PUGH Thomas - 1898 - 21/09/1898 – Age 20 – Striker. Gigfran quarry, Brimingham Corporation Radnor. A revolver, which he had was out of order and while the quarry blacksmith was examining it at the smithy not knowing it to have been loaded it went off and the bullet entered the deceased's abdomen. Died on the 26th.

PUGH Thomas - 1898 - 26/04/1898 – Age 32 - Slate maker. Graig Ddu Slate Quarry, TP Whitaker, Merioneth. He inserted a charge of gelatine dynamite into a hole and then began to probe it with an iron scraper to ascertain whether the explosive had reached the bottom. The scraper got fast in a rent and while the man was tugging at it the charge exploded. he received terrible injuries to which he succumbed a month later.

PUGH William (injured) - 1891 - 18/09/1891 – Age 44 – Miner. Roman Gravels (metalliferous). He was inserting a fuse into a dynamite cap screwing it round in order to make it go in when the cap exploded and blew off parts of his fingers. 11 weeks off.

PUGH William - 1895 - 14/01/1895 – Age 16 – Driver. Audley, W Rigby and Co., Audley, Staffordshire. Irruption of water from old working. 77 killed.

PUGHE Owen (injured) - 1891 - 29/01/1891 – Age 55 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). While unloading blocks of slate in the mill he had his finger crushed between two of them. Three and a half weeks off.

PUGLEY George - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 20 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

PUGSEY John Charles - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 25 – Labourer. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

PUGSEY Robert - 1895 - 18/07/1895 – Age 52 - Collier Llest, Llest Colliery Co., Glamorgan. Killed by coal bursting off face, owing to a heavy pounce in the rock roof in No. 3 Rhondda seam.

PUGSLEY John Thomas - 1898 - 15/12/1898 – Age 21 – Hewer. Blackhill, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was hewing when a large stone fell from the roof and killed him.

PULLMAN William - 1892 - 26/11/1892 – Age 17 – Collier. Clay Level, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Rhymney, Monmouth. Fall of roof in a seam which is only about 28 inches thick. There is a following stone about 9 inches thick over this coal which has proved very treacherous in the past, this being the 7th. death caused by it during the last 12 years. There was an ample supply of timber in the place.

PULSFORD William Henry - 1894 - 23/06/1894 – Age 33 – Ripper. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. By an explosion. 290 killed.

PUNDALL N. - 1898 - 20/12/1898 – Age 23 – Collier. Rotherham Main, John Brown and Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

PUNTON James - 1898 - 22/08/1898 – Age 22 – Quarrier. Catcraig Limestone Quarry, P. Mitchell and Sons, Haddington. Deceased, in lighting a shot, dropped the fuse, with primer, into the hole after it was ignited, and a spark ignited loose gunpowder from a former charge lying around the hole, and he was burned.

PURCELL William (injured) - 1894 - 08/06/1894 – Age 56 – Holer. Staffordshire. No. 1, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Priors Lee, Shropshire. Foot injured by fall of roof at working face in Double Coal.

PURCIVAL J. - 1891 - 17/03/1891 – Collier. Tinsley Park, B Huntsman, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Injured by tub. Died 22nd.

PURDY John - 1893 - 01/12/1893 – Age 34 - Traffic manager. South Hetton, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland. Co.Durham. While attempting to sprag some waggons, on an incline, the sprag flew out striking him on the head and dislocating his neck.

PURDY William - 1890 - 24/12/1890 – Age 15 – Putter. Seaton Delaval, Seaton Delaval Coal Co., Seaton Delaval, Northumberland. On going into the face of coal with his pony a large stone fell from the roof. 8.30 pm.

PURNELL Jacob - 1895 - 20/08/1895 – Age 35 – Collier. Abersychan, Abersychan Elled Steam & House Coal Co., Abersychan, Monmouth. While examining and pulling down some roof coal, which he was sent to attend to, at the junction of his stall road a large fall occurred from between cross slips and buried him causing his death and injury to his son Jacob Furnell jnr. a lad of 14 years who has since retired from Colliery work.

PURSLOW John (injured) - 1891 - 14/07/1891 – Age 58 – Miner. Snailbeach (metalliferous). Had his hand caught between his waggon and the side of the level while tramming in a narrow place. It was the first time he had trammed in this level. 6 weeks off.

PURVIS William - 1890 - 27/01/1890 – Age 68 – Engineman. Hetton, Hetton Coal Co., Fence Houses, Co.Durham. Died from apoplexy while at his work in engine room. Not comprised.

PUTMAN Arthur - 1896 - 16/04/1896 – Age 17 – Driver. Eston Ironstone, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., North Yorkshire. While pushing a tub he slipped and fell between it and a prop and was crushed internally.

PYM James - 1896 - 09/12/1896 – Age 57 - Waggon trimmer. Abergorki, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed between the buffers at the screens.

PYRAH Thomas - 1897 - 07/01/1897 – Age 50 – Hewer. Wolley, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. While following his employment he ruptured his bowels and died on 20th.
