Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.
WILLIAMS William R. (non-fatal) - 1893 - 31/08/1893 – Age 43 – Rockman. New Welsh Slate. When running to escape from a stone rolling down the working face he caught his hand in a waggon and broke one of the bones. Four and a half weeks off.
WILLIAMS William Thomas - 1890 - 16/12/1890 – Age 42 – Timberman. Naval, Naval Colliery Co. Ltd., Penycraig, Glamorgan. When sitting down, after dinner, a lump of brass and coal (about 60 lbs.) fell off the top of a prop and injured him internally. Died 19th December.
WILLIAMS William Thomas - 1893 - 09/08/1893 – Age 14 – Driver. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co.Durham. A pony's limbers became detached on an incline and the tubs ran amain crushing the deceased against a prop. It transpired one boy neglected to put in his cotteril and deceased to put in a chock.
WILLIAMS Willliam - 1896 - 30/10/1896 – Age 15 – Driver. Shankhouse, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was found dead in front of a set of tubs on the main horse road and it is supposed he fell from the top of the front tub and was killed.

WILLIAMSON Alfred - 1895 - 17/03/1895 – Age 24 – Engineman. Plumbley, J and G Wells Ltd., Derbyshire. He was drowned whilst attempting to rescue children who had fallen through the ice on the colliery engine-pond. All the children and deceased were drowned.

WILLIAMSON George - 1890 - 05/07/1890 – Age 14 – Driver. Lumley, 6th. Earl of Durham, Fence Houses, Co.Durham. While driving a set of tubs outbye, the pony fell, which caused three tubs to leave the rails and one of them caught the boy's foot crushing it badly and he died from lockjaw on 12th inst.

Deceased and another man were sent by the master shifter to remove a fall of stone, and whilst so engaged another fall occurred at a slip which completely buried him. Both were experienced men and the deputy had visited the place thrice during the night.

WILLIS William - 1893 - 06/11/1893 – Age 32 – Sinker. Framwellgate, Framwellgate Coal Co. Ltd., Durham, Co.Durham. While descending the shaft, with some deals on the top of the cage, it struck the side overbalancing him and he fell to the bottom, about 120 yards.
WILLIS William - 1894 - 19/04/1894 – Age 14 - Landing boy. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co., Ashington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was standing with his back against a large sheave, and alongside a rope running over another sheave, when the large sheave began to move and in trying to get out of the way he was in some way drawn in between the two sheaves.

WILLOCK George (non-fatal) - 1890 - 03/03/1890 – Drawer. Grange No. 2, R Yates and Co., Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Ran a hutch into the cage seat, as the cage descended, and he was injured.
WILLOUGHBY Robert - 1895 - 16/07/1895 – Age 55 - Coke burner. Pemberton, J Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection and inquiry made. Deceased was the foreman Coke-burner, and was lowering a wagon, it appears to have slipped off the brake between the wagon and a wall and he was crushed.
WILLS James - 1891 - 19/02/1891 – Age 23 – Timberman. East Pool (metalliferous), East Pool Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. He was engaged putting in timber in the 212 fathom level, when the stage on which he was standing gave way. He fell to the 228 level and sustained a compound fracture of the skull from which death ensued. There was nothing to account for the breaking of the stage.
WILLS Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 24/11/1890 – Age 50 – Miner. West Kitty (metalliferous), West Kitty Mining Co., St. Agnes, Scorrier, Cornwall. About a dozen men were on the plat at the adit level, among them being Wills and Evans. Winding was in operation in the same shaft and through the engine driver having apparently lost control of the engine the rope became over wound and broke. The kibble then fell back into the shaft and the debris struck the men on the adit plat. Evans was only slightly injured but Wills' leg was so badly fractured that it had to be amputated.
WILLS William (non-fatal) - 1891 - 08/12/1891 – Age 63 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. While engaged, stopping on a stage in the 314-fathom level, a small quantity of ground fell from the side and caused him to fall about 12 feet.

WILMOT Samuel - 1897 - 06/03/1897 – Age 38 – Chargeman. Dover, Kent Collieries Corporation Ltd., Kent. Whilst engaged sinking a shaft water burst through the bottom. The hoppet was at the surface. The water rose rapidly only allowing six of the fourteen men in the shaft to escape. 8 killed.
WILMOTT Joseph - 1898 - 04/08/1898 – Age 29 – Labourer. Twenty Mile Gravel Quarry, Josiah Smart, Hertford. Deceased was removing sand and gravel from under a bed of earth. This overburden gave way and the deceased was killed. Another man was injured.

WILSON Charles - 1899 - 13/07/1899 – Age 21 – Miner. Douglas, Coltness Iron Co., Lanarkshire. After firing and working off a bursting shot, in a 10 foot room, holed across its whole width, the deceased appeared to have gone under the holed coal to better the holing, preparatory to firing a cut shot. A large block of coal came away suddenly and killed him instantly. No gibs or holing props appeared to have been set.

Deceased, when going to his work, was killed by a fall of stone which occurred on a main road. Many men had passed the place previously without observing any danger.

He and another man moved a truck to an old level which they were filling with rubbish. They both got off the rails and deceased having lighted a light said he would go down and test the main level for damp. As he walked into the landing he unaccountably walked into the side of the shaft lifted the fence and walked straight into the shaft falling a distance of 44 yards.

WILSON Jesse - 1891 - 27/04/1891 – Age 17 Asst. hitcher. North’s Navigation, Wyndham North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Maesteg, Glamorgan. Fell down the shaft from a landing, only being used for sending up debris from another shaft in the course of sinking. There were two chains intended to be used as a fence to the shaft but they had not been so used by the hitcher who was up the pit at the time.

A fire broke out on the main airway of the mine and developed so rapidly that only six men, including the deputy, out of a total of 41 who were at work beyond the fire were able to escape. The bodies of the first nine mentioned in the list were shortly afterwards got out but 25 bodies had not been recovered by the end of the year. 35 killed.

WILSON Robert - 1895 - 29/05/1895 – Age 31 – Stoneman. West Cramlington, Owners of Backworth & West Cramlington Collieries, Cramlington, Northumberland. Inspection and inquest attended. Wilson had been timbering off a gateway, ready for a shot, and apparently, while altering some timber just on the outbye side of the caunch, the stone fell on him and crushed him to death.
WILSON Robert - 1898 - 21/11/1898 – Age 50 – Labourer. Wickham Chalk Quarry, Martin Earle and Co. Ltd., Kent. While he was at work, inside a kiln in the course of construction, a brick arch suddenly collapsed and fell upon him. He was so badly injured that he died in a few hours. The faulty material used in the construction aided by heavy rain caused the arch to give way.

WILSON William - 1893 - 07/07/1893 – Age 26 – Hewer. Cramlington, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Cramlington, Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was working in the brokens and after finishing his kirving he nicked the jud, somewhere about the middle, leaving it standing with two loose ends when the coal and stone fell on to him. Stays or sprags should certainly have been used in this case.

This accident was the result of a mistake, on the part of the Engineman, who, when he should have lowered the deceased raised them until they were crushed against the cross trees. 2 killed.

Whilst standing on a plank, repairing the shoot to a stone breaking machine, he fell and struck his head against a bank of timber causing concussion of the brain from which he died on 22nd June.
WILSON William - 1899 - 26/10/1899 – Age 33 – Hewer. Thornley, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. A fall of top coal occurred and so severely injured his head that he died immediately.
WILSON William Anderson - 1899 - 16/05/1899 – Age 14 – Driver. Boldon, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Inquest attended. When deceased was driving a pony attached to four full tubs he improperly took the cotter out of the limbers while still sitting on them and probably the jolting of the tubs dethatched the limbers, and he was run over. He subsequently died of blood poisoning.

WILTSHIRE James - 1891 - 11/11/1891 – Age 21 – Waggonshifter. Ferndale No. 2, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Ferndale, Glamorgan. He attempted to pass in front of two loaded waggons, which he was letting down the siding against others, in order to couple them and was caught between the buffers.
WIMBS John - 1893 - 25/01/1893 – Age 45 – Daywageman. Collins Green, Collins Green Colliery Co. Ltd., Earlestown, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased, with other contractors, were taking some side off a haulage road when some of the roof fell upon him. They had drawn some props previously and plucked what was loose in the roof, without replacing the props.
WINDERS William - 1899 - 10/10/1899 – Age 61 – Collier. Crop, St Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was getting coal in the lower side of his road when a fall of roof occurred between two slips, without any warning, capping three props and burying the deceased.

WINNING Gavin - 1896 - 27/04/1896 – Age 20 - Waggon shifter. Fairholm, Hamilton Colliery Co., Lanarkshire. Deceased was running two loaded trucks from a screen down to the siding. He was hanging upon the brake lever, at the front end of the rear waggon with his legs swinging under the buffers, when his foot caught he fell upon the rail and both wheels passed over his legs and arm.

He commenced working in a fortnight's time but died from inflammation from the effects of the blow, 29th Nov.

They were starting a road, off the airway, and had not secured the roof sufficiently when a stone fell from a break upon the deceased capping two props.
WINSTANLEY Peter - 1891 - 15/12/1891 – Age 17 – Drawer. Norley, Norley Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased jumped on a tram of full tubs, whilst in motion, and was crushed against a bar. Riding was well known to be against the rules of the colliery. 4.0 pm.

WINSTANLEY Thomas - 1897 - 13/09/1897 – Age 38 – Labourer. Garswood Hall, Garswood Hall Collieries Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased was engaged wheeling cinders along a plank, 21 inches in width, when he accidentally fell off the plank into a wagon causing serious injuries to his head from which he succumbed on the 21st instant.

WINTER James Sides - 1897 - 06/02/1897 – Age 19 – Hewer. Outfields, Outfields Colliery Co., Cumberland. Inquest attended. The deceased's father worked with him and was an eye witness of the accident. A piece of stone fell from the roof and crushed the legs and other portions of the deceased's body. From the evidence it appears the place was thought to be properly timbered up. Father and son were in the act of filling coal.
WINTER Joseph - 1898 - 08/12/1898 – Age 61 – Gatewayman. Wearmouth, Wearmouth Coal Co. Ltd., Wearmouth, Co.Durham. Inspection made and inquest attended. When taking down a caunch, in a longwall gateway, a large fall of roof suddenly occurred from slips not previously visible.

WINTER W - 1899 - 28/03/1899 – Age 30 – Lampman. Carlton Main, Yorkshire and Derbyshire Coal and Iron Co., Yorkshire. Cleaning lamps, standing on timber between hydraulic and winding cages, when the descending cage knocked him into the sump.
WINTERBOTTOM James (injured) - 1894 - 01/02/1894 – Age 50 - Pony driver. Bargoe, T Blocksage, Dukinfield, Cheshire. Fell from tippler on to the road below. Shoulder bone broken.
WINTERBOTTOM James - 1898 - 02/05/1898 – Age 63 – Collier. Dukinfield Dewsnap, Dukinfield (New) Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Cheshire. Fall of coal at working face in Great Mine. He failed to carry out the instructions of the fireman for securing the face before excavating further under the coal which fell and killed him.
WINTERBOTTOM Wellington (injured) - 1891 - 26/01/1891 – Age 38 – Miner. Limehurst 2 Foot, Limehurst Coal Co., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Injured by roof falling from between two slips, it knocked out three props. Inspection and inquiry.
WINTERS John - 1898 - 30/03/99 – Age 50 – Collier. White Mine, Ballycastle (Antrim) Colliery Co. Ltd., Co. Antrim, Ireland. Fall of side while repairing.
WINTLE George - 1892 - 21/11/1892 – Age 42 – Pitman. Parkend Castle Pumping, Parkend Deep Navigation Collieries Ltd., Parkend, Forest of Dean. While, with a comrade William Watkins, examining the shaft and pit work in a hoppet or kibble, he upset the paraffin oil from a torch lamp which he was using, resulting in him being burnt severely. He then fell to the bottom about 60 yds. Paraffin in such lamp and especially for such purpose is both unsuitable and dangerous.

WITCH John - 1898 - 12/10/1898 – Age 39 – Labourer. Wiveliscombe Slate Quarry, Wiveliscombe Slate Quarry Co. Ltd., Somerset. One of the sling chains, of a skip which was being hoisted on an aerial tram road, broke tipping the rubble etc. from the skip on to the men who were working below. Witch died in hospital the following day. One of his comrades was injured at the same time.
