LOVERANCE John - 1898 - 21/04/1898 – Age 31 – Collier. Rainford, Rainford Colliery Co., Rainford, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was going down the haulage, down brow, to his work when three full tubes broke away from the top of the brow, breaking the chain attached to the next three and running over the deceased before he was able to reach the manhole. At the inquiry it was agreed that the motion should not be started until the men reached the bottom and that a travelling road be provided through the return airway.
LOVERIDGE Nephi - 1890 - 06/02/1890 – Age 27 – Collier. Llanerch, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at naked lights in the No. 4 heading, off Cooke's slope, about 8.30 a.m. after the men had been at work in their places two to two and a half hours. 176 killed.
LOVERIDGE William - 1894 - 27/09/1894 – Age 31 – Ripper. Nantmelyn, Aberdare Merthyr Collieries Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on main level in Seven feet seam. Deceased and a labourer had been packing an arch and while standing under some timbers at one end of it four pair gave way and a heavy fall of roof came upon them killing deceased and injuring the other man.
LOVERING John - 1893 - 22/04/1893 – Age 13 - Door boy. Court, Herbert Dynevor Duffryn Colliery Co., Neath, Glamorgan. Crushed between trams while attempting to shackle them before they had come to rest on the parting.
LOVERING William - 1898 - 30/06/1898 – Age 45 – Tipper. Duffryn Rhondda, Duffryn Rhondda Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While using a prop, between two wagons not in line, the prop slipped and he was fatally injured by the two wagons meeting. Died 8th July.
LOW Thomas - 1898 - 21/12/1898 – Age 40 – Miner. Bothwell Castle No. 1, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Some props were knocked out on haulage road by hutches and while putting a hutch on the rails the roof gave way. Injured on 21st
Dec. 1898, and died on 11th August.
LOWBRIDGE Abner - 1892 - 06/01/1892 – Age 22 – Miner. Roughwood, Lowbridge and Harris, Short Heath, Staffordshire. Died January 10. Back fatally injured in a sinking pit by ascending full bowk falling upon him.
LOWDEN Thomas - 1899 - 23/02/1899 – Age 38 – Miner. Holebeck Iron Ore, Dalmellington Iron Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was thrown out of the cage whilst ascending to the surface.
LOWE Albert - 1895 - 18/02/1895 – Age 21 - Stallman. New London, Digby Colliery Co. Derbyshire. The verdict of the jury in this case was that he died from "blood poisoning." No accident or injury to cause death.
LOWE Fred - 1895 - 14/01/1895 – Age 27 – Loader. Audley, W Rigby and Co., Audley, Staffordshire. Irruption of water from old working. 77 killed.
LOWE George - 1899 - 21/03/1899 – Age 45 - Timber drawer. Main Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased was drawing timber out of a finished ribbing, about twenty yards in length, which was barred. They had only drawn a bar or two at the far end, when the roof came with a rush capping the bars and burying the deceased.
LOWE James - 1898 - 06/01/1898 – Age 39 – Shiftman. Pemberton, J Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were engaged ripping roof down in a roadway. The deceased was preparing the place for a bar when a piece of ley roof fell from a slip, on him, before he could clear himself.
LOWE John (injured) - 1894 - 23/11/1894 – Age 50 – Getter. Staffordshire No. 2, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Priors Lee, Shropshire. Fall of roof at working face in Flint Coal. Side bruised.
LOWE John - 1893 - 03/11/1893 – Age 30 – Sinker. Newbattle, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Stone fell from side of shaft. Died 24 days after from pneumonia. Not comprised.
LOWE John - 1896 - 30/10/1896 – Age 44 – Collier. Worsley Menses, Worsley Menses Colliery Co., Lancashire. Inquiry made. He was working at the face when a piece of bat and coal struck him on the head. He walked home and did not report the accident to the officials. He died at the infirmary November 8th after undergoing an operation.
LOWE Levi - 1891 - 16/10/1891 – Age 22 – Miner. Mosley common No. 4, Bridgewater Trustees, Tyldesley, Lancashire. Killed by roof clod falling as he was about to put another prop under. Inspection and inquiry.
LOWE Peter (injured) - 1890 - 15/05/1890 – Age 36 – Miner. Cranberry Lane, Ralph Entwistle and Co. Ltd., Over Darwin, Lancashire. Burned by cartridges igniting at their candles whilst preparing a shot in a stone drift. 2 injured.
LOWE R. - 1899 - 19/12/1899 – Age 32 – Collier. Llwynypia No. 1, Glamorgan Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face top coal, 3 foot x 3 foot x 1 foot thick, from between two props 6 foot apart while holing. Four feet seam.
LOWE Robert - 1891 - 15/09/1891 – Age 22 – Miner. Hewlett No. 2, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Westhoughton, Lancashire. Killed by roof from between two ships. 2 killed. Inspection and inquiry.
LOWE Thomas - 1891 - 07/05/1891 – Age 55 – Stallman. Moor Green, Barber Walker and Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Piece of roof struck the deceased upon the elbow causing a small wound. He finished his day's work but a few days afterwards erysipelas set in and proved fatal. Died 13th May. 2.0 pm.

LOWE William - 1899 - 02/02/1899 – Age 46 – Bandsman. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fell from top of upcast shaft to the bottom, 110 yards. He passed through fencing, in the fan drift, before having fully got his sight, but walked into the shaft.

LOWER Jacob - 1899 - 22/12/1899 – Age 31 - Top ripper. Cwmbran, Patent Nut and Bolt Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof near the coal face while knocking out props in front of the stall road in order to rip top for height.
LOWER Stephen - 1899 - 31/05/1899 – Age 16 - Collier’s boy. Llwynypia No. 2, Glamorgan Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face of Nottinghamshire, a fall 9 foot x 6 foot x 3 foot thick, broke down over three pairs of timbers where he was sitting eating his food. Upper Five feet seam.
LOWER Thomas - 1896 - 25/11/1896 – Age 25 – Fireman. Himley, Earl of Dudley, Staffordshire. Died 3rd Dec. Run over by empty railway waggon from which he had fallen.
LOWERSON James - 1899 - 09/10/1899 – Age 13 – Driver. Lumley, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co. Durham. He was getting his bait at a siding when a fall of stone came away upon him and crushed him against a baulk timber which was lying across the prop and killed him.
LOWERY Thomas - 1890 - 09/09/1890 – Age 50 – Mason. Bearpark, Bearpark Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Run over by a locomotive engine on top of coke ovens while attending to some repairs.
LOWES George - 1897 - 02/12/1897 – Age 38 – Stoneman. Woodland, Woodland Collieries Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Fell through a hole in a scaffold in a sinking shaft into 4.5 fathoms of water 59 feet below and was drowned.
LOWES John - 1894 - 26/10/1894 – Age 50 – Hewer. Edmonsley, Edmonsley Coal Co. Ltd., Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Fall of top coal which he had neglected to sprag.
LOWMAN George - 1892 - 26/08/1892 – Age 38 – Repairer. Park Slip, North’s Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 112 killed.
LOWN John - 1894 - 05/03/1894 – Age 63 – Stoneman. Burnopfield, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Burnopfield, Co. Durham. Inquiries made. On leaving the cage at the shaft top he slipped and broke his thigh. On the 14th July he died and at the inquest the jury came to the conclusion that the deceased died from heart disease accelerated by the accident.

LOWRIE David - 1895 - 22/10/1895 – Age 35 – Sinker. Bothwell Castle No. 3, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. The sinking kettle while ascending caught the midwall, the bow broke and it fell to the bottom. 2 killed.
LOWRIE Quintin - 1895 - 10/07/1895 – Age 19 – Engineman. Stonelaw No. 3, Farme Coal Co. Lanarkshire. Supposed to have been suffocated by the exhaust fumes from an oil engine.
LOWRISON Joseph - 1893 - 28/10/1893 – Age 47 – Backoverman. Walbottle, Walbottle Coal Co., Walbottle, Northumberland. Inquest attended. This was a simple accident. The full tubs were standing on the crossing and deceased was pulling them out of the way, of the empty tubs, when his foot slipped and he fell against the pony which was startled and dragged two of the empties over the deceased.
LOWRY George H.B. - 1891 - 19/09/1891 – Age 18 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. While ascending to the surface, by the man engine, he at the 40-fathom level slipped from the step was crushed and instantly killed. Apparently it was due to thoughtlessness.
LOWRY Thomas (non-fatal) - 1893 - 19/04/1893 – Age 19 - Mining student. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mine Adventurers, Camborne, Cornwall. While in the shaft watching a timberman at work he was struck in the back by a
small stone which fell from the descending skip.
LOWTHER Thomas - 1894 - 20/04/1894 – Age 27 – Hewer. Brandon Strakers and Love, Co. Durham. Died from the effects of injuries of the back caused by a fall of stone while attending to his work on 22nd. Mar 1893.
LOXLEY William - 1892 - 24/10/1892 – Age 16 - Collier’s boy. Cwmsychan No. 1, Abersychan Elled Steam and House Coal Co. Talywain Monmouth. Fall of coal and clod from the face. It came on while he was holing in consequence of a sooty parting. There were two sprags alleged to have been set against it. The manager and undermanager were in the place a few minutes before it occurred. Upon inspection this as well as the other places in the district appeared to have been fairly well secured.
LOY M.T. - 1891 – 31/12/1891 – Age 23 – Blacksmith. Waleswood, Skinner and Holford, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Burnt by hot iron. Died 12th Jan 1892.
LUCAS John J - 1897 – 28/09/1897 – Age 13 – Colliery Boy. Norths Tynewydd, Norths Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Run over by a journey of empty trams. He jumped out of a tram, ran in front, and in attempting to cross the line fell before the moving journey. Riding permitted.
LUCAS John J. - 1897 – 17/08/1897 – Age 13 – Collier boy. Nixon’s Deep Duffryn, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Run over by empty waggons which were being pushed by locomotive into the boiler siding while he was engaged stacking bricks near the line.
LUCAS Richard - 1890 – 10/03/1890 – Age 36 – Hauler. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 87 Killed.
LUCAS Thomas - 1895 – 08/07/1895 – Age 18 – Drawer. Ravenhead, St Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. Inquiry made and inquest attended. While in the act of taking his tub down a roadway it got off the road when another drawer came behind with his tub and crushed him.
LUCKMAN G.H. - 1894 – 06/09/1894 – Age 14 – Driver. Rockingham, Newton Chambers, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fell off the tub.
LUDLOW Charles - 1896 - 15/05/1896 – Age 18 – Hitcher. South Wales Cwmtillery, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Monmouth. Riding on a tram of coal on engine plane (alleged to be contrary to instructions) his head came in contact with an iron girder supporting the roof, resulting in injuries from which he died.
LUFF George - 1896 05/11/1896 – Age 59 – Collier. Blaenavon, Blaenavon Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof in his stall road while working alone. He was all right at 8 a.m. but when a haulier went into the place to fetch his full tram at 11 a.m. he was found quite dead under part of a fall, which had occurred from above the tram at a smooth top and side slips. There were road posts set at the sides close up to the face and collars to within about 9 feet.
LUKE George - 1895 – 07/05/1895 – Age 27 – Stoneman. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co. Ltd., Ashington, Northumberland. Inquest attended. The deceased had lighted a shot, which did not go off in the usual time and probably thinking that it had hung fire returned too soon and was killed by the explosion of the charge.
LUKE George - 1899 – 26/02/1899 – Age 54 – Shifter. Newbottle Dorothea, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co. Durham. Died today from injuries from a fall of stone when following his employment on February 15th. 1898.
LUKE Robert - 1894 - 03/10/1894 – Age 46 – Daywageman. Bersham, Bersham Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased and two other men were in a manhole when the jig was in motion, the empty tubs had passed up and the deceased stepping out too soon was crushed by the full journey coming down. The manhole was sufficient size for six men to take refuge.
LUKE Thomas - 1898 - 23/05/1898 – Age 46 – Deputy. East Hetton, Walter Scott Ltd., Co. Durham. When bringing a pillar back they had got 15 yards of goaf on and a very large stone fell and canted four rows of props out and killed these three men instantly.

LUNN Jeph. - 1892 - 26/09/1892 – Age 44 – Pikeman. Golds Hill, Job Edwards, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. A pike pierced his arm. Died October 14 from blood poisoning.
LUNN Samuel - 1899 - 19/08/1899 – Age 26 - Plane runner. Silver Hill, Stanton Iron Works Co., Nottinghamshire. He jumped down the shaft during the night and was found dead next morning. The jury found that he committed suicide.
LUNN William Thomas - 1894 - 25/07/1894 – Age 46 – Miner. Eston (metalliferous), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. On firing a shot a prop was knocked out and while resetting a large fall of stone took place and although warned he could not get clear of it.
LUNNY Walter - 1897 - 13/01/1897 – Age 58 – Stoneman. Wingate Grange, Owners of Wingate Grange Colliery, Co. Durham. Died in the mine while at his work, from which he had received no accident, and the ventilation was all right.
LUSCOTT Jeremiah - 1891 - 29/12/1891 – Age 39 – Collier. Knutton Manor, Knutton Manor Mining Co. Ltd., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fall of coal under holing in Black-band Ironstone Seam.
LUSH James - 1898 - 31/12/1898 – Age 15 – Labourer. Risca, United National Collieries Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof in a heading (where he was assisting a repairer) fractured his leg. He died on the 25th. January 1899.
LUSTY Wiliam - 1895 - 09/02/1895 – Age 21 – Sinker. Blaina Arrail Griffin, John Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Blaina, Monmouth. The deceased were descending the shaft to resume sinking operations. When about 56 yards from the bottom the hoppet struck the scaffold used for walling which was hung up against the side and caused the four men to fall to the bottom of the shaft where they were found dead. 4 killed.
LUTON J. - 1893 - 21/04/1893 – Age 33 – Pikeman. Himley, Earl of Dudley, Pensnett, Staffordshire. Died April 26th. Explosion of firedamp. 2 killed.
LUXLER Joseph (non-fatal) - 1894 - 27/06/1894 – Age 30 – Miner. Buckshaft (metalliferous), H Crawshay and Co. Ltd., Cinderford, Gloucester. In sliding down one of the holes or winzes on a ladder, about 10 feet long, from where he was working in a pocket of iron ore, he bungled and fell some feet receiving a slight scalp wound.
LYAL John - 1897 - 17/09/1897 – Age 53 – Deputy. Dinnington, J Bowes and Partners Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Lyall was laying a turn, and Hopper, who was passing the place, stopped to speak to him when there was a sudden fall of stone which came away from a couple of "jacks." 2 killed.
LYCETT John - 1890 - 12/02/1890 – Age 21 – Dataler. Bamfurlong Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Whilst jigging some tubs down an incline the jig prop came out and the roof above fell on the deceased. 8.30 am.

The deceased, after putting some tubs on the road in a jig brow, appears to have laid down to rest between the rails and gone to sleep. The next set ran over him. He had been at work about 15 hours in a very soft and warm atmosphere. 10 pm.

LYNCH Patrick - 1893 - 08/03/1893 – Age 30 – Packer. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were roofing down and had a bridge of about 6 yards to get down, which was 2 feet thick, and whilst drilling a hole at one end of this nearly the whole length of it suddenly fell catching the deceased who was sitting under it. The witnesses in their evidence said 10 props were under and knocked out by the fall.
LYNCH Thomas (injured) - 1890 - 10/01/1890 – Age 50 – Screener. Bedford Sidings, John Speakman, Bedford, Lancashire. Injured between railway waggon, one being overtaken by another.
LYNCH William - 1899 - 23/05/1899 – Age 50 – Labourer. Auchinlea, Sandstone Quarry, Thomas Gibb and Sons, Lanarkshire. A box of ‘shivers’ was being raised from the quarry hole, by means of a steam crane, at top when some pieces fell out of the box and struck deceased who was immediately below. He was warned to look out.
LYNCHLEY Thomas - 1895 - 29/01/1895 – Age 27 – Putter. Wearmouth, A Wearmouth Coal Co. Ltd., Wearmouth, Co. Durham. Inspection made. Deceased was trying to rush from one refuge hole to another, on the engine plane, and had apparently slipped and fallen in front of the sett.
LYNE Henry - 1893 - 15/02/1893 – Age 15 - Pony driver. Pewfall, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was driving a pony and was apparently getting on the journey to ride and fell over the front tub passing over him.
LYNES John - 1896 - 19/08/1896 – Age 44 – Haulageman. Hamilton Place, Bent Colliery Co., Lanarkshire. A rail being conveyed on hutches struck and knocked out a prop. The roof gave way and fell on him.
LYNESS George - 1895 - 25/05/1895 – Age 30 – Sinker. Neilsland, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. Plank fell in shaft.
LYNHAM Jonathan A. - 1899 - 03/07/1899 – Age 46 – Quarryman. Weston Stone Quarry, Bath Stone Firms Ltd., Dorset. The wire rope runner from the crane jib disturbed a stone at the edge of the quarry and caused it to fall on his head.
LYNN John - 1897 - 21/07/1897 – Age 29 – Hewer. Seaton Delaval Relief, Seaton Delaval Coal Co., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was breaking up coals, to fill the tubs, when a large stone fell, one end of it catching him. Fell from slips. His father-in-law who his marrow was present and considered the place well timbered and quite safe.
LYNN Nicholas - 1897 - 08/01/1897 – Age 57 – Enginewright. Lumley, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co. Durham. While tightening a bolt in the beam of the pumping engine the spanner slipped and he fell back over the shaft, a distance of 600 feet.
LYNN Ralph - 1897 - 27/12/1897 – Age 19 – Hewer. Sherburn Hill, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co. Durham. Killed by a fall of stone at a slip, in his working place.
LYON John - 1895 - 12/01/1895 – Age 26 – Labourer. Bickerstaffe, Bromilow and Foster and Co. Ltd., Bickerstaffe, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The grate to keep the pit warm during the frost set fire to the pit mouth and while the deceased was getting water on to extinguish the fire he slipped and fell down the shaft.
LYON John - 1898 - 28/05/1898 – Age 25 – Roadsman. Prescot, Prescot Colliery Co., Prescot, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The roof on the engine brow was unbarred, when a portion fell upon the deceased, opposite a level endway, whilst he was signalling the engineman. Bars would have prevented this accident.
LYON Thomas - 1894 - 19/07/1894 – Age 54 – Daywageman. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co. Ltd., Leigh, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased had taken out the sprags, under the top coal on the side of a return airway, and the coal not coming down as he expected he took his pick to loosen it when the coal fell crushing the deceased before he could clear himself.

LYONS William (non-fatal) - 1894 - 06/01/1894 – Age 19 – Driver. Eddlewood, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. Finger crushed by snibble, 8 days off.
LYTHE Frederick - 1892 - 05/12/1892 – Age 50 – Backoverman. Rosedale East (ironstone), Carlton Iron Co. Ltd., Rosedale, Yorkshire. Run over by a set of tubs on self acting incline plane.
LYTHGOE Thomas - 1893 - 26/04/1893 – Age 64 – Shotlighter. Eccleston Hall, Worsley Main Colliery Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was in the act of firing a shot in metal, they were roofing down from under which they had taken two sprags and a prop when a portion of the roof gave way to a slip crushing the deceased.
