BERRY William - 1877 – 22/10/1877 – Age 22 - Miner. Blantyre, William Dixon and Co., Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 207 killed.

BERRYMAN John - 1873 – 01/11/1873 – Age 60 – Roadsman. Abersychan, Ebbw Vale Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. Fall down the pit.

BERRYMAN Joseph - 1872 – 13/08/1872 – Age 60 - Collier. Vobster, Naish Steeds and Hollwey, Monmouth. Jumped into cage at bottom after signal made to go on and got severely crushed. The cage had gone nearly a yard when this unfortunate man made a rush to get it. Joseph left a widow and one child and they received compensation of £5 from a fund set up in Bath on 21st March 1865 to relieve the dependents of colliers killed in the district. Apparently it only paid out if the man was married.

BERRYMAN William - 1874 – 17/01/1874 – Age 38 - Miner. Wheal Trenwith (metalliferous), GB Rosewall, St. Ives, Cornwall. The deceased and his brother had sollared an old abandoned shaft with granite posts. They had done the work in a slovenly way, the posts were not long enough and were put too high in the shaft in clay, not firm rock. One post gave way while they were covering the sollar with rubbish and the deceased went down the shaft with it and was killed.

BEST John - 1877 - 05/09/1877 – Age 49 - Miner. Normanby (ironstone) Bell Bros Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. Heavy fall of stone from roof while working in his place.

BEST Joseph - 1871 - 11/07/1871 – Age 15 – Putter. Pelton, Lord Dunsay and Partners, Chester-le-Street, Durham. Fall of stone.

BETTENS William - 1874 - 17/02/1874 – Age 22 - Miner. Trebarvah (metalliferous) Trebarvah Mining Co., Perranuthnoe, Cornwall Fell away from a temporary ladder in going down the winze while carrying a cartridge and fuse for a wet hole.

BIBBY Thomas - 1875 - 15/06/1875 – Age 22 – Engineman. Gillers Green, Gillers Green Colliery Co. Ecclestone, St. Helens Lancashire. Found drowned at bottom of sinking pit.

BICKLE Joseph - 1874 - 16/01/1874 – Age 14 - Miner. Old Treburgett (metalliferous), Old Treburgett Mining Co. Ltd., Camelford, Cornwall In climbing to the surface he fell through open doors in shaft where capstan rope was used although a minute before he had warned his father against them.

BIDDLE G. - 1877 - 20/07/1877 – Age 49 - Collier. Whitwood, H Briggs Sons and Co., Normanton, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

BIDWELL Jabez - 1870 - 04/02/1870 – Age 11 – Waggoner. High Houses, Townsend and Co., Bacup, Lancashire. Crushed between Waggons catching him in a passbye place.

BIGGS Robert - 1877 - 23/01/1877 – Age 26 - Mining engineer. Harris’s Navigation, Harris’s Navigation Steam Coal Co., Quakers Yard Glamorgan. Killed by overwinding. He and two others were ascending the shaft when the bowk was drawn up against the pulleys by the engineman losing control of the engine.

BIGGS Thomas - 1872 - 16/09/1872 – Age 27 - Collier. Coalpit Heath, Sir Greville, Smyth, Gloucester. Heavy fall of stone (Frog Lane). 2 killed.

BIGGS W. - 1873 - 27/01/1873 – Age 13 - Gin driver. Parkfield, Parkfield Colliery Co., Bilston, Stafford. Pushed a skip into the shaft and followed it. He had no business to be near it.

BILBERRY James William - 1875 - 18/12/1875 – Age 18 – Coalminer. Lee Thomas, Leach Bacup, Lancashire. Roof stone falling.

BILLING T. - 1870 - 01/06/1870 – Age 44 - Collier. Norton, Heath and Son, Burslem, Stafford. Burnt whilst firing a shot.

BILLINGE Joseph (injured) - 1879 - 12/12/1879 – Age 55 - Miner. Unity Brook, James Stott and Co., Kersley, Lancashire. Hurt by coal dropping between props. Trencherbone Mine.

BILLINGE Joseph - 1876 - 28/09/1876 – Age 35 - Collier. Bamfurlong, Cross Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Strained his back whilst lifting pipes.

BILLINGHAM J. - 1877 - 26/06/1877 – Age 45 – Pikeman. Furnace Yard, Furnace Yard Colliery Co., Oldbury, Worcester. Injured 21st. by fall of coal which he was trying to get down at the back of a gate road. Died this day.

BILLMAN Robert - 1879 - 11/08/1879 – Age 24 – Banksman. Alice Brooks and Pickup, Townley, Lancashire. Hands brushed by the cage descending before the winder had got the catches under cage. 1 killed 1 injured.

BILLS Benjamin - 1877 - 01/02/1877 – Age 16 - Slack carrier. Bumble Hole, W Turner, Dudley, Worcester. Rate of coal fell from a slip caused by a bump in thick coal pit.

BILLS J - 1870 - 06/08/1870 – Age 25 – Pikeman. Salt Well, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcester. Whilst assisting the loaders a piece of coal fell from the roof. He had neglected to timber.

BINNING John - 1871 - 10/07/1871 – Age 22 – Engineer. Govan, WS Dixon, Rutherglen. Scalded by steam while repairing the throttle valve of the steam engine. 3 killed.

BINNS James - 1876 - 20/04/1876 – Age 13 – Hurrier. Newmarket, S Broadbent, Bradford, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves.

BINTLEY George - 1873 - 08/07/1873 – Age 21 – Pumper. Chaloners (ironstone), Blocklow Vaughan and Co., Guisborough. Yorkshire. Crushed by tubs.

BIRBECK John - 1877 - 17/05/1877 – Age 27 - Collier. Wooley, Joseph Pease and partners, Crook, Durham. Injury to spine and jaw broken by fall of a large stone. Died 3rd June.

BIRCH A. - 1876 - 29/06/1875 – Age 24 – Sinker. Walsall Wood, Walsall Wood Colliery Co., Walsall, Stafford. While raising a hanging scaffold in sinking pit shaft it was necessary to take off a sling chain from one side. They were at work on it and incautiously stepping to one side caused by one half of the scaffold to drop sending them to the bottom. 2 killed.

BIRCH Edward James - 1877 - 11/10/1877 – Age 13 – Ponydriver. Pemberton, Jonathan Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas 36 killed.

BIRCH Francis - 1873 - 18/02/1873 – Age 17. Talke North, Stafford Coal Co., Newcastle, Stafford. Explosion of firedamp. 18 killed.

BIRCH James (injured) - 1871 - 16/12/1871 - Miner. Cat Hall, Baxenden, Lancashire. The men were engaged in driving down a drift, and in doing the work it is necessary to blast the roof. The men had drilled the hole and put in some gunpowder, and were ramming the charge home when by some means the shot fired. Crabb's left hand is so badly injured that the first finger had to be amputated which was performed by Dr. Russell, who is attending both men. His eyes are also injured and his face burnt. Birch, is still much more injured, the front portion of his head was laid open, and had to be stitched together, and it is feared he will lose his sight, the chest is also injured. Both men are lying at Mr. Grimshaw, Beerhouse, Chapel Street where they lodged. The men had copper protection for the rammers (to reduce sparks) but whether they were in use at the time is another question. Probably, the iron came into contact with the roof, and struck a spark which caused the explosion". (Accrington Times). 2 injured.

BIRCH Joseph - 1879 - 24/04/1879 – Age 31 - Miner. Habergam, Executors of J Hargreaves, Burnley, Lancashire. Crushed by tub on which he was in front of in taking it down a brow.

BIRCH W. - 1871 - 20/04/1871 – Age 17 - Horsedriver. Clifton, J Collins, Oldbury, Worcester. Fall of roof in gate road of a thick coal pit.

BLACKMORE James - 1874 - 17/09/1874 – Age 22 - Miner. West Chiverton (metalliferous), West Chiverton Mining Co., Perranzabuloe, Cornwall. He was in the skip taking out timber when it was drawn up and crushed him against some timber. The lander received a signal to wind up but it is not known from whom.

BLACKMORE William - 1875 - 21/05/1875 – Age 36 - Pitman. Snailbeach (metalliferous), Snailbeach Mining Co., Shropshire. They were repairing some of the timberwork of a shaft. The capstan rope by which they were suspended in the shaft gave way at the coupling and this precipitated the cage to the bottom of the shaft, 150 yards. The rope was evidently defective and had been used too long. The defective condition was not noticed by Edwards whose duty it was to examine it. 2 killed.

The Coroner’s jury added a rider to the verdict of accidental death that the piece of timber was too long for the weight upon it but it did not appear to me on visiting the place that the timber had broken by anything but a hidden defect.
