RADCLIFFE Henry - 1871 - 06/09/1871 – Age 22 - Drawer. Ince Moss, Pearson and Knowles, Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas. 70 killed.

RADCLIFFE Henry - 1873 - 25/02/1873 – Age 14 - Gin driver. Burwood Edge, Executors of L and E Hall, Buxton, Derbyshire. Fell out of tub while descending shaft. He had no business to be riding in a tub.

RADCLIFFE Henry - 1874 - 03/12/1874 – Age 27 – Contractor. Law, John Wilson, Carluke, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at stoops while drawing props.

RADCLIFFE James - 1875 - 09/08/1875 – Age 14 – Waggoner. Mill, Thomas Whittle, Duxbury, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp. He died 19th, Radcliffe 25th. 2 killed.

RADCLIFFE John - 1873 - 17/11/1873 – Age 20 - Dataller. Strangeways Hall, Mr Hayes, Wigan, Lancashire. Fall of roof while repairing engine brow.

RADCLIFFE Thomas (injured) - 1879 - 07/10/1879 – Manager. Mossfield Pumping, Thomas Simpson and Co., Atherton, Lancashire. Hurt by falling 10 yards in the shaft. The winding rope broke as they were putting in a signal. It was an old rope but they had examined it and thought it to be safe. 2 injured.

RADDOCK Jonas - 1873 - 06/05/1873 – Age 43 – Fireman. Edford, Walters Fussel and Brin, Edford, Somerset. An end had filled with carbonic acid gas and a danger signal was erected. In the meanwhile they commenced a windway to get at the face and sweep the blackdamp away. Raddock who wished to get faster on with these operations passed the danger signal and marched right into the very jaws of death so anxious was he to push on the new work.

RALPH Thomas Fleming - 1877 - 19/01/1877 – Age 30 - Slate dresser. Elterwater (metalliferous), D and JF Green, Ambleside, Westmoreland. Fall of large piece of rock which fell through roof of shed or workshop where he was working with others.

RALPHORN William - 1879 - 07/05/1879 – Age 24 - Collier. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. A large stone fell from between two faults carrying timber with it.

RALPHS Thomas - 1879 - 21/08/1879 – Age 40 – Underlooker. Strangeways Hall, Crompton and Shawcross, Wigan, Lancashire. He was examining the mouthing which had been partially filled up by the pit bank falling in when more rubbish fell which buried him and he was suffocated.

RANKINE John - 1873 – 20/05/1873 – Sinker. Clunny, Anderson and Goodall, Kirkcaldy, Fife. By the breaking of the crane rope they fell 8 or 9 fathoms. The rope was completely decayed at the point of fracture it was six years old and had been laying in store for three years. 2 killed.

RAPSON William - 1873 – 19/05/1873 – Age 22 - Miner. Crenver and Wheal Abraham (metalliferous), Crenver and Wheal Abraham United Mines Co. Ltd., Crowan, Cornwall. Fell down shaft. He had wheeled some stuff past the shaft and probably slipped while tipping the barrow.

RASBATCH J. - 1877 – 26/04/1877 - Collier. Princess Royal, Princess Royal Coal Co., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Fall of roof. This place had not been properly examined before the men went in and the owners were prosecuted.

RAY Thomas - 1879 - 22/10/1879 – Age 45 - Collier. Alexandra, St. Helens Colliery Co Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. The engineman started the engine the wrong way and the cage was taken up into the pulley when the rope broke and the cage with the men fell to the pit bottom. 7 killed.

REDFERN Aaron - 1873 - 26/09/1873 - Miner. Tapton, Taptow Coal Co. Ltd., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Was practicing holing and was cutting a spurn or coal sprag left to support the roof which suddenly fell on him. The head stallman was near him at the time.

REDFERN Richard - 1877 - 27/06/1877 – Age 15 – Waggoner. Great Harwood, Great Harwood Coal Co. Ltd., Accrington, Lancashire. Rope breaking as he was up an incline. He was riding on a wagon laden with coal which was being drawn up an incline by a rope, when the rope broke and the wagons containing the deceased went with considerable force to the bottom of the line of rails. He was so severely bruised and shaken that he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday. An inquest will be held on Saturday".

REED William - 1876 - 27/09/1876 – Age 41 - Pitman. Mynydd Gorddu (metalliferous), Mynydd Gorddu Mining Co. Cardiganshire. He was a man of considerable experience as a Miner and occupied the position of sub-agent had been requested by the principle agent to fire a large quantity of dynamite. The charge failed in its intended effect and he charged the hole a second time with powder as it was supposed and retired immediately afterwards to see the result and he and a companion were immediately rendered insensible. His companion recovered but could give no explanation as to the cause of them being made senseless.

On the morning in question the deceased was engaged in removing pillar, when a quantity of roof fell and caught him. He was extricated by his fellow workmen, and was found to have sustained a fracture of the skull, a fractured left leg and other injuries. Medical assistance was immediately obtained, but he died from his injuries as above stated. The deceased was 34 years of age, a widower and leaves five or six orphans. (Accrington Times).
