LADEN James - 1870 - 21/11/1870 – Age 40 – Fireman. Hattonrigg, Mossend Iron Co., Holytown, Lanarkshire. The men started work on Monday morning examining places. They went with naked lights expecting no firedamp but came on some and were so much burned that they only lived for three days. The furnace was newly kindled after having been out for 30 hours. 2 killed.

LAMB Richard - 1879 - 24/03/1879 – Age 19 – Putter. Castle Eden, Johnson and Reay, Castle Eden, Co. Durham. Fall of stone. Were sent to hew coal in a jud but crossed over to an old board where the timber was drawn out and no one had any business to go. 2 killed.

LAMERTON Joseph - 1873 - 16/06/1873 – Age 38 - Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Fall down shaft. He was looking at a timberman cutting timber and was startled by some stuff rattling down the shaft and in his hurry stepped into the shaft.

LANE J. - 1870 - 07/05/1870 – Age 45 – Bondsman. Bradley, GB Thorneycroft and Co., Bilston, Stafford. Fall of coal from between two conveying slips. He had just finished work preparatory to firing a shot in the coal which fell and proved fatal to him.

LANE James - 1873 - 19/09/1873 – Age 15 – Ponydriver. Lee Oldham, Middleton and Rochdale Co. Ltd., Oldham, Lancashire. Roof stone falling as he was passing in the engine brow.

LANE James - 1876 - 21/11/1876 – Age 36 – Coalminer. Ashtons Field No.2, Bridgewater Trust, Little Hulton, Lancashire. Irruption of water and stream which burst through a dam from the basement of the enginehouse into anew drift they were making for a culvery about 22 yards below the surface. Hobson was found dead. Lane died 18th Dec. 2 killed.

LANGMAN William - 1873 - 12/06/1873 – Age 29 – Filler. Wheal Emma (metalliferous), West Great Work Mining Co., Tavistock, Devon. Fell down shaft. He was in the plat waiting for the skip to come down and unseen by his comrade fell into the shaft. It is supposed he went to sleep and jumped up suddenly forgetting where he was.

LAVIS Richard - 1873 - 03/04/1873 – Age 46 – Trammer. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), R Boyns, A Chenhalls and others, St. Just Cornwall. In tipping a waggon the staple in the tram road to which a chain from the waggon was fastened broke the waggon went over the bank and knocked him over. He fell 30 feet.

LAWRENCE Jeremiah - 1873 - 08/12/1873 - Miner. Berehaven (metalliferous copper), Berehaven Mining Co., Allihies Cork, Ireland. A shot exploding in the Mountain Mine. The ramming or tamping it is said was nearly finished.

LAWRENCE John - 1879 - 08/09/1879 - Collier. White Barn, John Blakie, Newcastle, Stafford. Fall of roof.

LAWRENCE Nightingale - 1872 - 11/10/1872 – Age 34 – Coalminer. Hoddlesden, Joseph Place and Son, Over Darwin, Lancashire. The winding drum unkeyed as they were descending the shaft. 2 killed. On Friday morning the deceased's with another man got into the cage to be lowered down No.2 shaft, when the shield with which the rope and cages were attached got unkeyed, and the deceased's were precipitated down the pit, a distance of 50 yards. Their bodies were dreadfully lacerated, and Welsh, aged 19 died instantly. Nightingale, who was 34 years of age, lingered six hours after the accident. He sustained a fracture of the collar bone. Dr. Wraith attended Nightingale". (Blackburn Times).
