KAY Thomas (injured) - 1879 - 27/06/1878 – Age 30 - Miner. Hagside, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Radcliffe, Lancashire. Leg broken, rope broke as he was with about 10 others riding up the engine brow against orders. The rope had been in about 10 weeks and was found to be defective.

KEAR Luke Lee - 1870 - 21/02/1870 – Age 12 – Doorboy. Parkend, Parkend Coal Co., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Thrown out of cart in which he was riding and the run over and crushed by it and the rib side of the road.

KEARNEY Thomas - 1873 - 23/04/1873 – Age 23 - Labourer. Ashtons Green, Messrs Bramall and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Fall of stone from side of sinking pit.

KEAST Richard - 1873 - 10/10/1873 – Age 67 – Lander. Wheal Uny (metalliferous), Wheal Uny Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Blow from the surge of a wire rope. He and another man were going to change the socket of a wire rope used for drawing up the skip. They had lashed the wire rope to one chain but not the second and were unwinding the rope from the cage previous to cutting it. The lashing suddenly slipped and the skip went down the shaft drawing the trope taught. The surge of the slack knocked both men over and both were injured, Keast fatally.

KEEPING Frederick - 1875 - 22/10/1875 – Age 43 – Sinker. Oakerthorpe, George Pearson and Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Getting water out of an old shaft. He went down to change the clack of pumps. Overcome by carbic acid gas fell out of the tub and drowned before being rescued.

KEITH Alexander - 1878 - 16/03/1878 – Age 21 - Collier. Langbyres, Barr and Higgins, Shotts, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof while brushing 2 feet from face. Longwall.

KELL William - 1877 - 26/04/1877 – Age 30 – Deputy. Bearpark, Bearpark Brancepeth Coal Co. Ltd., Brancepeth, Durham. Injury to head by fall of stone while drawing some back props. Died 4th May.

KELLETT John - 1877 - 11/10/1877 – Age 21 - Collier. Pemberton, Jonathan Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas 36 killed.

KELLEY Edward - 1876 - 25/11/1876 – Age 43 - Miner. Crossfield No.8 (metalliferous), Crossfield Iron Ore Co., Moor Row, Lancashire. Overwinding the men fell to the bottom of the shaft. 3 killed.

KELLY B - 1870 - 13/12/1870 – Age 13 - Hooker-on. Douglas Bank, John Grant Morris, Wigan, Lancashire. Falling into shaft.

KELLY George - 1876 - 26/06/1876 – Age 20 – Loader. Birley, Jeffcock and Dunn, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. Had worked with safety lamps previous to the morning of the explosion. Fireman neglected to thoroughly examine the heading before the men went to work. The fireman was committed for manslaughter and the manager and underviewer censured by the Corner’s jury. 5 killed.

KELLY George - 1876 - 26/07/1876 – Age 20 – Loader. Birley, Jeffcock, Dunn and Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 6 killed.

KELLY James - 1874 - 26/09/1874 – Age 15 - Drawer. Brookside, Messrs Simpson and Co., Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. On Friday morning he descended the pit in his usual health with some other youths. On arriving at the bottom he fell over a sledge - a low wagon carriage - and shortly afterwards he exclaimed "Oh my back" and became senseless. He was carried to the engine house on the pit bank, but died within a few minutes. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased died suddenly in the pit, and there was not sufficient evidence to show from what cause".

The men were charging or stemming a hole into which they had put a considerable quantity of powder. They put in more than usual to fill a loch or natural cavity which the birer had entered and by some means unexplained the powder exploded killing them both. They appeared to have been using an iron stemmer. 2 killed.

KENNEDY Stephen - 1875 - 10/02/1875 – Age 16 – Driver. Garrion Gill, Coltness Iron Co., Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. Crushed between tubs and prop at the top of an engine plane while detaching rope. He had no duty there.

KENNEDY Thomas - 1875 - 16/06/1875 – Age 49 - Miner. Dalton (metalliferous), Denny Bros and Co., Furness, Lancashire. The breaking of a steel wire rope while they were descending in a kibble. They were going by this mode contrary to the regulations of the mine which were posted up in the large print at the mouth of the shaft. A good ladderway was duly provided for their use but they went down by the kibble in order to save the slight labour of travelling the road. 2 killed.

KENNEY Henry - 1872 - 02/02/1872 – Age 36 – Sinker. Littleburn, North Brancepeth Coal Co., Durham, Co. Durham. Winch rope ran amain and knocked them out of the kibble causing them to fall to the bottom of the shaft. 2 killed.

KENNY James - 1876 - 08/08/1876 – Age 54 – Shiftman. Castle Eden, Johnson and Reay, Castle Eden, Co. Durham. Fall of roof while putting in baulk in stables. The stone fell from between two slips. Two men were engaged in the work.

KENNY John - 1872 - 26/03/1872 – Age 13 – Driver. Wingate Grange, Wingate Coal Co., Ferry Hill, Co. Durham. Going too near the shaft at a mid-landing, was caught by the descending cage.

KENWYN Joseph - 1871 - 14/04/1871 – Age 28 – Slopeman. Risca, TW Rhodes, Risca, Monmouth. A broken wheel threw the trams off the rails in the slope and killed him.

KENYON John - 1871 - 18/11/1871 – Age 27 - Miner. Woodpark, Fairbottom Co., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Roof falling.

KENYON Mesbach - 1872 - 24/06/1872 – Age 45 – Coalminer. Clayton, Leigh and Bradbury, Manchester, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in 2 Feet mine. Died 14th July. A flash in the upper end of the face work which he entered with a candle without trying with the safety lamp. The fireman had neglected to examine the far end for which he was prosecuted and fined.

KENYON Richard - 1874 - 28/11/1874 - Engine tenter. Baxenden, Baxenden, Lancashire. It seems that when the chain is stopped, the engine if stayed in a certain point requires a little help at the flywheel to get the crank over its centre. Kenyon, having turned the steam on seems to have applied his foot to the rim of the flywheel, which suddenly revolved, and before he could snatch it away the next arm of the wheel caught it, smashing it in a shocking manner. Amputation of the foot was found to be necessary, and the operation was successfully performed. The injured young man was a very steady workman, and he is much respected, and great sympathy is expressed for him, as he is an orphan and the sole support for his sister. (Accrington Times).

KENYON William - 1878 - 26/09/1878 – Age 43 – Fireman. Welch, Whittle Blainscough Hall Colliery Co., Welch, Whittle Lancashire. Falling out of a bucket when about half way up a small shaft about 12 yards deep which was being sunk in the mine. Having gone too soon after a shot had been fired and apparently overpowered by powder smoke mixed with a little afterdamp from a small blower of firedamp he gave an alarm and was hastily wound up by windlass.

KEOFE Michael (injured) - 1879 - 02/12/1879 – Sinker. Bedford, John Speakman, Leigh, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in No.2 sinking pit. No gas had been previously met with until 150 yards deep the floor began to rise and before they could get out of the way there was a sudden issue that fired at their candles. 2 killed 3 injured.

KERFOOT Adam (injured) - 1879 - 28/03/1878 – Age 60 – Furnaceman. Great Boys, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Tyldesley, Lancashire. Hurt by cage descending on him as he was wrongfully crossing under it when the cages were in motion.

KERFOOT S - 1879 - 07/03/1879 – Age 37 - Bye workman. Victoria, Rhodes and Dalby, Pontefract, Yorkshire. Fell with cage in shaft. 8 killed.

KERMODE John - 1878 - 20/06/1878 – Age 28 - Miner. Eskett (metalliferous), Eskett Iron Ore Co., Whitehaven, Cumberland. Fall of roof.

KERNICK Peter - 1874 - 21/12/1874 – Age 16 - Apparatus boy. Wingate Grange, Trustees of the late John Gully, Ferry Hill, Co. Durham. Crushed by truck.

KERR A. - 1872 - 18/05/1872 – Age 40 - Collier. Whitehall, Archibald Hood, Dalkeith, Mid Lothian, Fall of coal.

KERR Andrew - 1874 - 31/01/1874 – Age 26 - Collier. Linridge, Robert Forrester, Shotts, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at stops. Sean 9 feet thick.

KERR David - 1874 - 04/04/1874 – Age 59 - Labourer. Auchlochan Clin, Dunlop and Co., Lesmahagow Lanarkshire. Ran a hutch into the pit at the low scaffold when the cage was not there. Gate standing open.

KERR George - 1872 - 26/07/1872 – Age 40 - Roadsman. Rosehall No.12, R Addie and Sons, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on main road.

KERR Henry - 1871 - 12/10/1871 – Age 21 - Collier. Balgonie, Mr Balfour, Markinch, Fife. Fall of coal while holing.

KERR Hugh - 1872 - 20/11/1872 – Age 64 - Labourer. Nitshill, Nitshill Coal Co., Hurlet, Lanarkshire. Fell before empty waggons in motion on the lyes.

KERR James - 1873 - 12/04/1873 - Collier. Auldton, Andrew Spencer, Dalserf, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal at the stoops.

KERR John - 1874 - 02/03/1874 – Age 25 – Brusher. Blantyre, William Dixon Ltd., Blantyre, Lanarkshire. The men descended 10 minutes before to work at a new furnace within 20 yards of the shaft. Explosion of gas. No one else was in the seam. Being experienced men they were permitted to examine the place themselves and neglected to do so with a safety lamp. 2 killed.

KERR John - 1878 - 17/06/1878 – Age 20 - Collier. Ayrshire, JT Gordon, Ayr, Ayrshire. Fall of coal.

KERR William - 1875 - 07/06/1875 – Age 46 - Collier. Gadgirth No.1, George Taylor and Co., Ayrshire. Ayr Fall of coal.

KERR William - 1879 - 14/06/1879 – Age 14 - Pithead boy. Barncluith No.2, Srchibald Russell, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Run over by waggon. He was at his dinner and had crept below the waggon for shade on a hot day. Died 22nd June.

KERSHAW James - 1876 - 15/05/1876 – Age 17 – Coal cleaner. Ladyshore, John Fletcher, Little Lever, Lancashire. Falling off coal boat into the canal his boat hook having broken as he was taking a boat from the screens.

KERSLEY Samuel - 1878 - 17/10/1878 – Age 65 – Spademan. Victoria, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Atherton, Lancashire. Caught by railway waggon on siding.

He got frightened by a hole that he was about to let off taking fire too soon and instead of going down into the level he ran to a place where a man had just lighted another hole. This went off and he died soon afterwards from the shock he received.

While raising a hanging scaffold in sinking pit shaft it was necessary to take off a sling chain from one side. They were at work on it and incautiously stepping to one side caused by one half of the scaffold to drop sending them to the bottom. 2 killed.
