UNDERWOOD Samuel - 1875 - 05/01/1875 – Age 19. Aldwarke Main, John Brown and Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 7 killed.

UNSWORTH Abraham - 1875 - 11/12/1875 – Age 18 - Taker-off. Pendleton, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Pendleton, Lancashire. Because a jig brow rope let a tub run against him at the bottom.

UNSWORTH Edward - 1872 - 31/01/1872 – Age 26 - Collier. Park Lane Mercer and Evans Wigan, Lancashire. Fall of coal.

UNSWORTH George - 1879 - 13/05/1879 – Age 15 - Pony driver. Crombuke Day Eye, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Atherton, Lancashire. Caught against the side by the front tub on which he was riding getting off rails.

UNSWORTH John - 1871 - 28/08/1871 – Age 38 - Miner. Howe Bridge 6 Feet, John Fletcher and others, Atherton, Lancashire. Coal falling from the face of his working.

UNSWORTH William - 1878 - 07/06/1878 – Age 23 – Jigger. Wood, Richard Evans and Sons, Haydock, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp after a sudden outburst. 189 killed.

UNWIN George - 1872 - 07/06/1872 – Age 14 – Driver. Springwell, Staveley Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fell from limmers of the coal tub and was run over.

UNWIN William - 1874 - 21/08/1874 – Age 58 - Miner. Eyam (metalliferous), Eyam Mining Co., Eyam, Derbyshire. Unexpected giving way of some rubbish which he and others were removing.

UPJOHN Elisha - 1879 - 13/01/1879 – Age 51 - Labourer. Dinas Middle, Coffin and Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Killed by an explosion of gas. 63 killed.

URCH R. - 1876 - 30/09/1876 – Age 35 - Collier. Risca, London and South Wales Co., Risca, Monmouth. Fall of roof, died Oct 9th.

UREN David - 1874 - 16/10/1874 – Age 32 - Miner. Tanybwlch (metalliferous), JT Campbell, Caernarvonshire. Fall of roof in a level he was driving.

UREN Thomas - 1874 - 11/02/1874 – Age 16 - Miner. Wheal, Unity Wood (metalliferous), Wheal Unity Wood Mining Co., Scorrier, Cornwall. Blown from a stone that fell down the shaft whether it came out of the kibble is not certain.

UREN William Vincent - 1875 - 03/04/1875 – Age 22 – Filler. Trencrom (metalliferous), Wheal Trencrom Mining Co., Lelant, Cornwall. Fell down shaft while crossing it on a plank.

URPETH Francis - 1877 - 03/05/1877 – Age 32 - Carpenter. Framwellgate, Framwellgate Coal Co., Durham, Co. Durham. While repairing a Waggon.

URWIN William - 1870 - 06/06/1870 – Age 15 – Ponyputter. Eden, Consett Iron and Coal Co., Shortley Bridge, Co. Durham. Fall of stone.

URWIN William - 1876 - 14/07/1876 – Age 29 – Joiner. West Shield Row, R Dickinson and Co., Gateshead, Co. Durham. Fell out of kibble.

USHER Thomas - 1874 - 03/09/1874 – Age 60. Sawyer, Backworth Maud Taylor and Co., Newcastle, Northumberland. Killed by splinter of wood flying from circular saw.

VALLALAY John - 1875 – 10/06/1875 – Age 19 - Drawer. Carfin, AG Simpson, Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Crushed between tub and roof on a brae.

VALLANCE Joseph - 1872 – 25/03/1872 – Age 24 – Hanger-on. Marehay, Butterley Co., Ripley, Derbyshire. Killed by piece of coal falling down shaft.

VALLELLY James - 1877 – 22/10/1877 – Age 32 - Collier. Blantyre, William Dixon and Co., Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 207 killed.

VARDY E. - 1871 - 30/09/1871 – Age 58 – Stoneman. Seaton, Delaval Lamb and Co., Newcastle, Northumberland. Fall of stone.

VARTY James - 1876 - 29/08/1876 – Age 51 – Waggonman. East Hetton, East Hetton Coal Co., Coxhoe, Co. Durham. Crushed between Waggons while setting out from screens.

VASEY William - 1874 - 23/01/1874 – Age 26 – Sinker. Rainton, Marquis of Londonderry, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Falling down a sinking shaft from kibble.

VAUGHAN David - 1876 - 26/07/1876 – Age 18 - Collier. Pontyclere, Pontyclere Coal Co., Cross Inn, R.S.O. Glamorgan.

VAUGHAN F. - 1874 - 20/05/1874 – Age 46 – Engineman. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Brierley Hill, Stafford. He was packing the piston of the engine cylinder and the cylinder lid fell on his head and killed him on the spot.

VAUGHAN John - 1877 - 20/11/1877 – Age 31 - Collier. Framwellgate, Framwellgate Coal Co., Durham, Co. Durham. Serious injury to back by fall of coal while holing under band in Busty seam. Died 30th Dec.

VAUGHAN Owen - 1873 - 27/09/1873 – Age 54 - Collier. Plaskynaston, Buckley and Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. Fall of coal in No.1 pit in Wall and Bench mine.

VAUGHAN Robert (injured) - 1879 - 09/07/1878 – Age 25 - Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Pendlebury, Lancashire. Leg broken by a scale of dirt falling from face in 5/4 Mine.

VAUGHAN Samuel - 1874 - 01/07/1874 – Age 20 - Collier. Cotterhill’s Farm, Daraston Steel and Iron Co., Tipton, Stafford. While standing in the inset on 2nd, a piece of brick fell out of a shaft which he was engaged to examine and repair and injured him so severely that he died on this date.

VAUGHAN Thomas - 1873 - 13/07/1873 – Age 68 - Labourer. Dyllas, Gadlys Iron Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by trams on the surface.

VAUGHAN Thomas - 1878 - 29/06/1878 – Age 42 - Collier. Mardy, Rhymney Iron Co., Monmouthshire. Fall of stone.

VEAL James O. - 1874 - 25/07/1874 – Age 17 - Smiths apprentice. South Hetton, South Hetton Coal Co., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Knocked out of cage while ascending with a tram plate.

VEAL W. - 1871 - 20/02/1871 – Age 38. Farmer Graig, Gadlys Iron Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by falling down pit.

VEALE Richard - 1877 - 23/02/1877 – Age 22 - Asist Carpenter. Frank Mills (metalliferous), Frank Mills, Christow, Devon. Injuries received from being caught by the whim chain which was put in motion as he was stepping across it.

VEDMORE William - 1874 - 06/03/1874 – Age 38 - Collier. East Slade, New Bowson Co., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Hurt by fall of coal. Died 9th.

VENABLES George - 1879 - 01/09/1879 – Age 48 - Collier. Denaby Main, Denaby Main Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

VERNON J. - 1876 - 28/02/1876 – Cager. Cannock and Rugeley, Cannock and Rugeley Colliery Co., Hednesford, Stafford. A lump of coal fell from ascending tubs and injured him 28th. Died 29th.

VESTY Joseph - 1875 - 12/10/1875 – Age 24 – Coalminer. Crumbouke, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Atherton, Lancashire. Coal rolling above his sprags. Died at Bolton.

VICARRY William - 1879 - 21/02/1879 – Age 15. Nipper, Montreal (metalliferous), John Stirling. Whitehaven, Cumberland. Crushed by bogie of ore at foot of brake road.

VICKERS J. - 1875 - 23/06/1875 – Age 18. Orgreave, Rothervale Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas.

VICKERS John - 1875 - 20/01/1875 – Age 35 - Miner. Upleatham (ironstone), JW Pease and Partners, Marske, Yorkshire. Fell off ladder in mine.

VICKERS John - 1876 - 17/02/1876 – Age 31 – Stallman. Netherseal, Netherseal Coal Co., Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. He had fired one shot and was drilling another hole trusting to his own examination of the roof sooner than set timber to secure the same.

VICKERS Thomas - 1874 - 16/07/1874 – Age 13 – Driver. Adelaides, Joseph Pease and Partners, Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Run over by tubs. 2 killed.

VIGGARS E. - 1870 - 19/07/1870 – Age 28 - Collier. Apedale, Stainer and Co., Newcastle, Stafford. Injured by the brake.

VIGGARS F. - 1879 - 20/09/1879 – Age 14 – Driver. Diglake, Rigby and Co., Stoke, Stafford. Run over by tubs.

VIGGARS S. - 1877 - 21/06/1877 – Age 36 – Butty. Apedale, Stanier and Co., Newcastle, Stafford. Stone rolled upon him down an incline of 45 degrees.

VIGGERS J - 1871 - 18/10/1871 – Age 22 - Collier. Podmore Hall, Cooper and Craig, Newcastle, Stafford. Crushed by tub on incline.

VINCENT Richard - 1874 - 20/10/1874 – Age 46 – Filler. Pednandrea (metalliferous), Pednandrea United Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. He was standing across the slack chain of the skip and did not move though cautioned when the skip was drawn up. He was killed either by falling from the skip or by being crushed against the sides of the shaft.

VINE Henry Charles - 1875 - 06/12/1875 – Age 20. Swaithe Main, Mitchell and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas 143 Killed.

VINE John - 1876 - 09/11/1876 – Age 62 - Hewer. Wearmouth Bell, Stobart and Co., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Crushed by full set of tubs on engine plane.

VIPOND George - 1873 - 12/02/1873 – Age 24 - Hewer. Bowden Close, Joseph Pease and Partners, Willington, Co. Durham. Fall of stone.

VOIZEY William - 1873 - 21/05/1873 – Age 19 - Hewer. Cramlington, Ann Joseph Lamb and Partners, Newcastle, Northumberland. Fall of stone.

VOSE Richard - 1877 - 12/06/1877 – Age 21 – Gangrider. Bickerstaff, Bromilow Forster and Co., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Fall of roof.

VYSE W. - 1872 - 18/12/1872 – Age 14 - Collier. Fenton Park, Fenton Park Co., Stoke, Stafford. Crushed on incline.
