BAILY Thomas - 1875 - 16/06/1875 – Age 33 - Miner. Dalton (metalliferous), Denny Bros. and Co., Furness, Lancashire. The breaking of a steel wire rope while they were descending in a kibble. They were going by this mode contrary to the regulations of the mine which were posted up in the large print at the mouth of the shaft. A good ladderway was duly provided for their use but they went down by the kibble in order to save the slight labour of travelling the road. 2 killed.

Having cut through to a slip and taken out the spurns he fired a shot in the overhanging coal under which he incautiously went and was so severely injured that he died in the course of 2 or 3 hours.

The portion of workings situated beyond a fault became foul in consequence of the space for the passage of air being too small and ignition was caused by a shot which blew out the stemming. 27 killed.

BARNES James - 1870 - 20/04/1870 – Age 8 - Runner-on. Victoria, George Hargreaves and Co., Baxenden, Lancashire. Crushed by tub waggons as he was going out of pit in endless chain road. The inspector explained that the law required that no boys should be employed who were less than nine years of age. The boys employed were required to attend school two half days in a week, and each attendance to be not less than three hours in duration. The coroner summed up the evidence, and remarked that the violation of the Act of Parliament was a matter for the consideration of Mr. Dickinson as to whether he would report it to the proper authority. The jury returned a verdict of Accidental death. (Accrington Times). Bacup Times 31st December 1870. At Accrington Police Courts on Thursday, Robert Geldard, underlooker for Messrs George Hargreaves and Co. pits at Baxenden, was fined £5 and costs for employing a boy under the age of ten years underground in the pit in November last. The lad had been killed in the pit on 9th. November, being run over by a wagon.

BARNES Thomas - 1870 - 09/04/1870 – Age 57 – Roadman. Cwm Tillery, South Wales Colliery Co., Abertillery, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. He went into an old heading with a naked light to search for a sleeper and so fired the gas and was so badly burned he died 24th Apr.

BARNETT John - 1879 - 16/04/1879 – Age 50 – Carter. Wellsway, Countess Waldegrave, Somerset, Piece of clod rolled on to him in the working face. He was taken home and hopes were entertained for his recovery but he died two days later.

Scalded whilst repairing a line of 2-inch wrought iron steam pipes from the underground boiler the portion between the shut-off valve and the boiler having become disconnected allowing the steam to escape. 3 killed.
