BATE Thomas – 1875 - 04/08/1875 – Age 20 – Bandsman. Himley, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcester. Fall of heath coal from thick coal roof. The men were assisting to set timber props when the fall took place. The fall was doubtless caused by two slips in the roof. 2 killed.

BATEMAN Christopher - 1873 - 07/06/1873 – Age 14 - Collier. Abersychan, Ebbw Vale Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. Fall of stone.

BATEMAN Edward - 1870 - 23/06/1870 – Age 45 – Inclineman. Price’s Tilery Colliery, John Jayne and Co., Monmouth. The coupling bolt came out and the trams overwhelmed him. Died 27th.

BATH Michael - 1873 - 20/06/1873 – Age 20 - Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mining Co., Pool, Dorset. Fall down a winze. He was helping take some timber off a tram - Waggon previous to sending it down the winze. He was blind in one eye which was turned towards the winze.

BEARDWERD Joseph - 1879 - 24/09/1879 – Age 23 - Back fireman. Newton Lamb and Moore, Wigan, Lancashire. For some unknown reason he went into a tunnel where some firedamp was lodging and was suffocated. It was fenced off and he had no business to be there as he knew of the presence of the gas.

BEATIE James - 1878 - 12/03/1878 – Age 19. Unity Brook, James Stott and Co., Kersley, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in Cannel Mine. An outburst of gas from the first large fall of roof in the west workings. Candles being used. 43 killed.

BECK Hugh - 1873 - 12/08/1873 – Age 60 – Pitheadman. Jawgraig, CJ Alexander, Falkirk, Stirling. He had gone into the pit in the morning to kindle a fire and he had fallen into the sump. He should not have been sent there.

BECKLEY James - 1879 - 26/06/1879 – Age 33 – Pikeman. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Brierley Hill, Stafford. Dropping a fall of heath coal in thick coal pit a piece suddenly broke off from an unseen slip and killed him.

BEDDIS James - 1877 - 07/02/1877 – Age 30 – Pumpman. Park End, Park End Coal Co., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Fell off scaffold down pit.

BEIRNE Thomas - 1878 - 11/01/1878 – Age 42 – Banksman. Pendwll, Thomas Clayton, Wrexham, Denbigh. He had temporally removed the fence in order to take a tank out of the cage and while so engaged, slipped and fell down the pit.

BELL Benjamin - 1879 - 06/03/1879 – Age 45 – Deputy. North Skelton (metalliferous), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Saltburn, Yorkshire. Severe internal injuries by fall of roof while setting timber.

BELL Cuthbert - 1873 - 05/06/1873 – Age 39 – Shifter. Charlaw, Elliott and Hunter, Chester-le-Street, Durham. Fall of stone.

BELLIS Edward - 1879 - 01/09/1879 – Age 30 - Collier. Bettisfield, Bettisfield Colliery Co. Ltd., Bagillt, Flint. He went in front of his tub which had stuck fast as he was jigging it down an incline when the chain broke and his head was caught between the tub and a low bar.

BENDELL Francis - 1871 - 21/02/1871 – Age 40 - Collier. Cwm Tillery, South Wales Co. Ltd., Abertillery, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp, 21st, in consequence of door being left open. Bendell was so badly burned that he died some days later. There was plenty of air for all purposes of safety if they had but minded their doors as was in fact their bounded duty.

BENNITT R - 1871 - 19/05/1871 – Age 44 – Pickman. Himley, Earl of Dudley, Brierley Hill, Stafford. Preparing to prop the roof and whilst pulling a piece of loose Brazils a rate (loose coal) fell from the side and so severely crushed him that he died soon after.
