SALKELD John - 1872 - 09/12/1872 – Age 32 – Sinker. Habergam, Executors of J Hargreaves, Padiham, Lancashire. The Banksman apparently not noticing that the lurry was off the shaft pushed in a tub of bricks and fell down with it amongst 5 men who were bricking the sinking shaft. 3 killed.

SAVILLE Edwin - 1876 - 26/06/1876 – Age 56 – Header. Birley, Jeffcock and Dunn, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. Had worked with safety lamps previous to the morning of the explosion. Fireman neglected to thoroughly examine the heading before the men went to work. The fireman was committed for manslaughter and the manager and underviewer censured by the Corner’s jury. 5 killed.

SAXTON Vincent - 1873 - 15/02/1873 – Age 14 – Driver. Old Hollingswood, Staveley Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Run over by tubs. Was riding on a tub.

SAYLES R. - 1872 - 05/02/1872 – Age 17 – Hurrier. Aldwarke Main, Aldwarke Main Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Coal fell on him while lifting it into a corfe.

SCARLETT E. - 1876 - 09/01/1876 – Age 65 – Sinker. Old End, S Groucott and Sons, Coseley, Stafford. He and another man cleaning up the sump several workmen employed in the upper seam came through the level to this shaft and when getting into the bowke displaced a brick which fell on him. Injured 8th. Died this day.

SCARRATT J - 1872 - 23/08/1872 – Age 32 – Loader. Silverdale (ironstone), Stanier and Co., Newcastle, Stafford. Fall of stone.

SCATTERGOOD George - 1874 - 26/10/1874 – Age 22 - Collier. Wincobank, John Crowley and Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 2 killed.

SCHOFIELD B. - 1874 - 06/06/1874 - Collier. Neville Hill, Norwegian Titanic Iron Co., Leeds, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Died 31st July.

SCHOFIELD Henry - 1878 - 12/12/1878 – Age 23 - Miner. Manor, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co., Kersley, Lancashire. Roof coal falling from back.

SCHOFIELD James (injured) - 1879 - 09/01/1879 - Banksman. Low Compton, Oldham Middleton and Rochdale Coal Co. Ltd., Oldham, Lancashire. Hurt falling from stage while stocking coal.

SCHOFIELD John - 1872 - 06/11/1872 – Age 29 - Miner. Pendlebury, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Pendlebury, Lancashire. Suffocated. A brattice cloth having been set on fire, by 3 miners, in some unexplained manner and the fire extending so rapidly to the coal the retreat of the deceased who were working was cut off. The fire extended 85 yds up the brow 20 yds along the right-hand level and 50 yds along the left-hand level before it was put out at a cost of £1500 in wages and materials. 6 killed.

SCHOFIELD Samuel - 1871 - 18/03/1871 – Age 45 - Miner. Tooter Hill, James Dearden, Bacup, Lancashire. Coal falling. Having holed he nicked the coal at the side and began holing again without having set a sprag.

SCHOFIELD Samuel - 1875 - 06/12/1875 – Age 35. Swaithe Main, Mitchell and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas 143 Killed.

SCHOFIELD Samuel - 1879 - 29/05/1879 – Age 34 – Dayman. Lower Moor, John Mayall’s executor (Edward Clegg), Oldham, Lancashire. While taking out broken pump rod of the shaft. Scofield was precipitated to the bottom and Walsh found dead in the cage, the rod having apparently slipped. 2 killed.

SCHOFIELD Samuel - 1879 - 29/09/1879 – Age 49 - Miner. Doe Samuel, Scowcroft and Sons, Kersley, Lancashire. Hurt by coal falling in his working place. Died 13th Oct.

SCHOFIELD Thomas - 1872 - 28/03/1872 – Age 13 - Drawer. Lovers Lane, John Fletcher and others, Atherton, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in 5 Feet mine. The portion of workings situated beyond a fault became foul in consequence of the space for the passage of air being too small and ignition was caused by a shot which blew out the stemming. 27 killed.

SEARLE Thomas - 1874 - 06/08/1874 – Age 10 - Tin Dresser. Florence Consuls (metalliferous), George Eveleigh, Marazion Cornwall. During the dinner hour the boy climbed on the framework of the buddle and was entangled in the shafting and killed.

SEARSTON Stephen - 1878 - 16/12/1878 – Age 19 – Loader. Tibshelf, C Seeley and Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Stallman fired a shot four yards from him while he was loading coals.

SEDDON ? - 1871 - 05/06/1871 – Age 13 - Loco Stoker. Scot Lane, William Woods and Son, Blackrod, Lancashire. Slipped as he was stepping on to the loco engine in the colliery siding.
