SNEDDON William - 1878 - 14/10/1878 - Stone Miner. Hattonrigg, Mossend Iron Co., Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Men were working at both sides from a fault and had all but effected a communication. A shot from the opposite side blew through and the stones struck him.

SOCKWOOD George - 1870 - 23/02/1870 – Age 43 – Sinker. Bradley Wood, Charles Wheatley, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Fall of something down shaft.

SOLLOWAY G. - 1879 - 27/11/1879 – Age 40 – Pikeman. Bear Hall, Isaac Whitehouse, Bilston, Stafford. Having fired a shot inside of road, near the shaft, which loosened the coal, he incautiously got under it to bring it down when he was so severely injured that he died soon afterwards.

SOMMERVILLE Robert - 1872 - 29/10/1872 – Age 28 - Collier. Coney Park, John Barr, Denny, Stirling. Was injured by the self-acting fence at the pit mouth.

SOPHIR John - 1874 - 30/12/1874 – Age 50 - Collier. Southerhouse, Pettigrew and Spencer, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Fell from kettle as being lowered.

SORROWS J. - 1877 - 12/11/1877 – Age 46 – Pikeman. Oakham, Oakham Colliery Co., Dudley, Worcester. A rate of coal fell off side of rib pit in thick coal pit. The result of a bump. 2 killed.

SOULSBY Henry - 1878 - 16/07/1878 – Age 13 – Driver. Wingate Grange, Wingate Grange Coal Co. Wingate, Co. Durham. Dislocated neck caused by his pony falling.

SOUTHALL G - 1871 - 08/08/1871 – Age 37 – Bondsman. New Hawne, New British Iron Co., Halesowen, Stafford. Fall of roof in thick coal pit which rolled on him and crushed him to death against the rib.

SOUTHALL T. - 1873 - 01/12/1873 – Age 18 – Engineman. Rounds Green, Alston Colliery Co., Oldbury, Worcester. Dismembered by machinery.

SOUTHCOTT James - 1874 - 30/06/1874 – Age 57 – Quarryman. Chillaton (metalliferous), Messrs Simms Bros., Milton Abbott, Devon. The two men were killed by the fall of some overburden which rolled down the side and struck them. 2 killed.

SOUTHERN John - 1871 - 03/09/1871 – Age 60 – Screenman. Pensher, G Elliott MP and Co., Fence Houses, Durham. Fell off gangway.

SPEIGHT J. - 1876 - 30/05/1876 – Age 19 – Stoker. Bolton Green, P Priestley Charnock, Richard, Lancashire. Struck by one of the handles of a crab winch which he and others were working. The chain not having been tight on the barrel gave a jerk.

STANBERRY George - 1875 - 27/05/1875 – Age 38 - Miner. Hodbarrow (metalliferous), Hodbarrow Mining Co., Hodbarrow, Cumberland. The giving way of a piece of timber in the forebreast in which he was working.

STANDING John - 1875 - 05/08/1875 – Age 50 - Asst. fireman. Martholme, Great Harwood Colliery Co. Ltd., Great Harwood, Lancashire. Suffocated by firedamp which they apparently ventured too far into whilst dislodging it at night. 2 killed. They had been inspecting the air passages, and last night went down the mine at 2 o'clock in the morning. They did not return, and about 6 o'clock in the morning a search party went down. Both men were found to have died from choke damp. They were both married and had families".

STARKIE Ralph - 1879 - 06/12/1879 – Age 53 - Labourer. Long Lane, Edward Johnson, Wigan, Lancashire. He stumbled and fell on pit bank but continued to work for four days when he grew worse and died 17th.

STARKIE Richard - 1872 - 09/12/1872 – Age 39 – Sinker. Habergam, Executors of J Hargreaves, Padiham, Lancashire. The Banksman apparently not noticing that the lurry was off the shaft pushed in a tub of bricks and fell down with it amongst 5 men who were bricking the sinking shaft. 3 killed.

STARKIE Thomas - 1872 - 14/11/1872. Pelsall Hall, Morgan and Starkey, Walsall, Stafford. Irruption of water. 22 killed.

He and 2 others had nearly finished sinking a winze and tried to break through to the next level by a blast of 4lbs of gunpowder. He went down the winze very soon after the blast and complained of the heat, while being drawn up he fell to the bottom of the winze and the man who went down after him fainted and was got up alive. The first man was dead when he reached him and there was no evidence to show if he died from suffocation or the fall.

STREAT Frederick - 1879 - 23/05/1879 – Age 35 – Hitcher. Foxcote, Foxcote Colliery Co., Somerset. He opened the wrong door by mistake at an upper landing and pushed a tram into the pit and fell after it to the bottom of the shaft.

STRICKER Anthony - 1874 - 18/05/1874 – Age 37 – Sinker. Norley, Thomas Whaley and Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas in No5 pit. While sinkers were putting in bricking an explosion occurred of some gas that had accumulated under the scaffold coming from Ravin Mine which had just been sunk through. 4 killed.
