MADDOCK J - 1873 - 06/09/1873 – Age 48 - Miner. Skelton Park (ironstone), Bell Brothers, Guisborough, Yorkshire. Shot blowing through.

MADDOCKS James - 1875 - 03/05/1875 – Age 21 – Loader. Birley Vale, Jeffcock Dunn and Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Loading coals in a heading the roof fell in. He had previously been cautioned to set timber.

MADLEY Isaac - 1878 - 11/09/1878 – Haulier. Abercarn, Ebbw Vale Iron Co., Abercarn, Monmouthshire. Explosion of firedamp. 268 killed.

MAGGS George - 1873 - 13/09/1873 – Age 40 – Onsetter. Speedwell, Kingswood Co. Ltd., Gloucester. He slipped his footing and descending cage caught his leg which had to be amputated but the shock was too great. Died 20th.

MAGO Richard - 1875 - 02/03/1875 – Age 22 - Miner. Cragg’s Hall (ironstone), JW Pease and Partners, Saltburn, Co. Durham. Fall of stone.

MAGY Evan - 1876 - 05/01/1876 – Age 22 - Collier. Blanant, Aberdare Coal and Iron Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by falling part way down the shaft.

MAHON Michael - 1879 - 27/10/1879 – Age 45 - Miner. Whitehall, Archibald Hood, Lasswade, Edinburgh. He was passing along the level road and was struck by a runaway hutch and jammed against the side.

MAHONEY Patrick Sinker - 1879 - 02/12/1879 – Sinker. Sinker Bedford, John Speakman, Leigh, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in No.2 sinking pit. No gas had been previously met with until 150 yards deep the floor began to rise and before they could get out of the way there was a sudden issue that fired at their candles. 2 killed 3 injured. Died 21st.

MAHONEY Timothy - 1877 - 28/05/1877 – Age 35 – Stoker. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Taibach, Glamorgan. Killed by a boiler explosion.

MAILON George - 1872 - 16/02/1872 – Age 38 - Collier. Kimberley, Babbington Coal Co., Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Fall of coal in returning to his work after firing a shot.

MAKER James - 1876 - 27/07/1876 – Age 13 - Miner. Bedford United (metalliferous), Bedford United Mining Co., Tavistock, Devon. Fell from ladder in some stopes.

MAKIN John - 1870 - 22/12/1870 – Age 15 – Ponydriver. Haydock, Richard Evans and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Injured by coal boxes.

MAKINSON Edward - 1879 - 15/11/1879 – Age 49 - Collier. Hindley Green, John Scowcroft and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. After the top coals were got down and while he was sounding the roof preparatory to setting props a fall of roof came unexpectedly.

MALDOUNN Francis - 1874 - 18/10/1874 – Age 15 – Boy. Douglas No.3 (Oil shale), Merry and Cunninghame, Johnstone, Renfrew. Caught by cage at pit bottom.

MALLENDER Charles - 1878 - 07/01/1878 – Age 53 - Dataler. Norwood, Sheepbridge Iron and Coal Co., Killamarsh, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. They were building packs when the roof gave way. Packs had been left too far behind. 2 killed.

MALLISON Robert - 1877 - 20/02/1877 – Age 31 – Joiner. Garscadden No.2 (ironstone or fireclay), Merry and Cunninghame, Duntocher, Dumbarton. By a log of wood falling on him.

MALLOY Michael - 1870 - 13/04/1870 – Age 13 - Drawer. Palacecraig, William Baird and Co., Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Fall of stones from the side of the shaft.

MALONE John - 1878 - 07/09/1878 – Age 33 – Sinker. Corby Craigs No.2 (ironstone), Dalmellington Iron Co., Dalmellington, Ayrshire. Fell from a scaffold which was knocked out from under him by a buntin whilst being drawn up the shaft.

MALONE John - 1879 - 02/07/1879 – Age 38 – Brusher. Blantyre, No.1, William Dixon Ltd., Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 28 killed.

A brattice cloth having been set on fire by 3 miners in some unexplained manner and the fire extending so rapidly to the coal that the retreat of the deceased, who were working there, being cut off. The fire extended 85 yds up the brow 20 yds along the right hand level and 50 yds along the left hand level before it was put out at a cost of £1500 in wages and materials. 6 killed.
