CADDICK J - 1872 - 19/07/1872 – Deputy. Ebenezer, Executors of B Whitehouse, Bilston, Stafford. Whilst engaged throwing a fall of coal down a portion struck him and killed him on the spot.

CADMAN John - 1879 - 05/07/1879 – Age 43 – Pikeman. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Brierley Hill, Stafford. Preparing to set props in thick coal opening when a portion fell from between a tree and cog by which he was mortally injured 4th July. Died this day.

CARRINGTON Thomas - 1875 - 15/09/1875 – Age 48 - Miner. Miners Union (metalliferous), Union Lead Mining Co., Denbigh. He and senereral other miners were reopening on their own account a shaft which had been abandoned for many years. He was an experienced Miner and was timbering the side of the shaft and while thus engaged he trusted his weight to a piece of timber which had been formerly used for securing the side and which appeared externally sound. It was however so rotten that it broke without warning and caused him to fall to the bottom of the shaft.

They were sinking a windlass pit which had reached only 40 feet from the surface. One fell when he reached the bottom, the other fell while trying to rescue him. A few buckets of water dispelled the gas. 2 killed.

CHILD Irving - 1878 - 05/02/1878 - Miner. Hole House Pit, Cliviger, Lancashire. Died in his working place.

CHILD J. - 1877 - 17/02/1877 – Age 43 – Driver. St. John’s, Locke and Co., Normanton, Yorkshire. Crushed by waggons on surface. Died 18th Feb.

CHILTON David - 1872 - 06/11/1872 – Age 15 – Waggoner. Pendlebury, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Pendlebury, Lancashire. Suffocated. A brattice cloth having been set on fire by 3 miners in some unexplained manner and the fire extending so rapidly to the coal the retreat of the deceased were working being was cut off. The fire extended 85 yds up the brow 20 yds along the right hand level and 50 yds along the left hand level before it was put out at a cost of £1500 in wages and materials. 6 killed.

CHILTON J. - 1871 - 18/01/1871 – Age 14 - Horsedriver. Hednesford Cannock, Cannock Chase Colliery Co., Stafford. Explosion of firedamp. The force of the blast drove him against a door and killed him.

CHILTON James - 1876 - 25/03/1876 – Age 31 – Sinker. Chilton, South Durham Coal Co., Ferry Hill, Durham. Fell from cradle while changing high set bucket, 80 yards.

CHIN Frederick - 1878 - 11/09/1878 - Collier. Abercarn, Ebbw Vale Iron Co., Abercarn, Monmouthshire. Explosion of firedamp. 268 killed.

CHIVERS Isiah - 1879 - 19/11/1879 – Age 40 – Engineman. Princess Royal Haines and Co., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. He had been assisting in changing a cage and slipped at the top and fell down the shaft.

CHIVERS Joseph - 1879 - 10/02/1879 – Age 29 - Dataler. Kirkless, R Parry and Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased was riding down the engine plane against the rules and by some means caught his head against a bar the bar and some roof falling on him.

CHIVERS William - 1871 – 22/03/1871 – Age 31 - Collier. Clandown, Charles Hollwey, Clandown, Somerset. Fell down a staple and was killed. The protecting chain was not up as it ought to have been so that Chivers and the tub went right in and down to the bottom together. Neglect again!

CHIVERS William - 1875 – 25/03/1875. Foxcote, Somerset. Left a widow but no children. She received £5 compensation from the fund.

CHORLEY James - 1872 – 05/07/1872. Norley, Thomas Whalley, Wigan, Lancashire. Fall of stone.

CHORLEY Richard - 1878 – 07/06/1878 – Age 36 - Collier. Wood, Richard Evans and Sons, Haydock, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp after a sudden outburst. 189 killed.

CHRISP W.G. - 1876 – 06/01/1876 – Age 15 – Putter. Urpeth, C Hunt Perkins and Co., Gateshead, Co. Durham. Crushed by tub.

CHRISTIAN John - 1875 – 06/12/1875 – Age 32. Swaithe Main, Mitchell and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas 143 Killed.

CHRISTOPHER Joseph - 1877 – 22/10/1877 – Age 17 - Collier. Blantyre, William Dixon and Co., Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 207 killed.

CHRISTOPHER Thomas - 1878 - 12/03/1878 – Age 44 - Miner. Heskin Hall, Rev William Michelle Heskin, Lancashire. Burned. Went into a fenced place. Died 14th.

CHRISTOPHER William - 1870 - 27/01/1870 – Age 13 - Engine tenter. Ince Hall, Ince Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Injured by machinery on surface.

CHRISTY John - 1874 - 15/09/1874 – Age 47 – Coalminer. Linnyshaw, Bridgewater Trust, Worsley, Lancashire. Roof falling at unseen slip in a wide space.

CHUBB Robert - 1879 - 13/01/1879 – Age 30 – Timberman. Dinas, Middle Coffin and Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Killed by an explosion of gas. 63 killed.

CHURCH Thomas - 1879 - 26/08/1879 – Age 40 – Hitcher. Haywood, Little Dean Woodside Co., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Fell down while replacing staging 50 yards from bottom of shaft.

CHURM Samuel - 1879 - 18/07/1879 – Age 15 – Loader. Peacroft, R Atkiss Jnr., Bilston, Stafford. Improperly standing at the bottom of the shaft the balance weight (70lbs.) fell from the ascending chain and killed him. Caused by D-link working out of place.

CHURNSIDE William - 1877 - 23/01/1877 – Age 35. Stonehill, Roscow and Lord Farnworth, Lancashire. Suffocation. The mine became on fire but the inquest could not agree whether it arose from an explosion or blackdamp or the ingition of a brattice cloth. - 18 killed.

CHYANOWETH Edward - 1873 - 02/10/1873 – Age 20 - Miner. Penstruthal Consols (metalliferous), Penstruthal Consols Tin and Copper Mining Co., Gwennap, Cornwall. Fell down shaft just after tipping a barrow which he had wheeled in.
