CORNISH Robert – 1875 - 07/07/1875 – Age 42 - Miner. Ballacorkish (metalliferous), Ballacorkish Mining Co., Ballacorkish, Isle of Man. A stone fell on his head while he was in the kibble. The injury was first considered of a very slight nature. He was well enough to walk home and he remarked that he could not account for the accident.

CORSER Thomas - 1876 - 30/12/1876 – Age 38 – Blacksmith. Burrs, The Patent Shaft and Axletree Co., Wednesbury, Stafford. He was sent to assist the blacksmith to repair the water tank which at the time was suspended over the open shaft and having called at the public house on the way he came somewhat the worse for liquor he, after being cautioned to keep clear of the pit, removed the fence laid hold of the tank and fell headlong down the shaft.

COTTLE William - 1879 - 27/12/1879 – Age 52 - Collier. No.22, Ebbw Vale Steel & Iron Co., Monmouth. After charging hole with gunpowder he was driving a pricker through the stemming when the shot exploded.

COTTOM Anthony - 1876 - 08/02/1876 – Fireman. Taylors Green, Lancashire. On Tuesday morning an explosion of gas, which proved fatal, occurred at the Spring Vale Colliery. About a quarter past six o'clock, two firemen named Anthony Cottom, residing at 29 Carr Row, Darwen, and Thomas Walsh descended the shaft of the pit as was their custom, for the purpose of seeing if all was right in the mine. When at the bottom of the shaft, they separated, each taking opposite directions. At this time Cottom had with a lighted lamp and a candle, but the latter was not lighted. Walsh returned up the shaft, but Cottom did not do so, and a search was made for him. The manager (John Jepson) and his brother (Ralph Jepson) took a lighted lamp, and when opening a door about 200 yards up the mine the stench of gas was so strong that they had to retreat. In a short time they were able to proceed with their search and found Cottom lying on his back. He was badly burnt all over the body, his skull was fractured, his arms broken, and other wounds were inflicted. At the inquest Betsy Ann Cottom residing in Carr Street said the deceased was her husband. (Blackburn Times) 1 killed 1 injured.

COTTON Stephen - 1875 - 16/02/1875 – Age 36 – Bandsman. Bullpiece, Darlaston Steel and Iron Co., Darlaston, Stafford. When he was putting on the sump planks a piece of timber fell down the shaft from under the lander at pit top.

COTTON William (injured) - 1879 – 26/08/1879 – Age 31 - Miner. Ashton’s Field, Bridgewater Trust, Little Hulton, Lancashire. Three toes crushed by falling dirt as he was sounding the roof were he had just taken down some coal.

COURTIS Ralph - 1873 - 17/05/1873 – Age 55 - Miner. South Great Work (metalliferous), South Great Mining Co., St. Hilary Cornwall. Blow from a winch handle. The piston of the pump handle had been raised by the winch after being repacked. Steam was given to send it down and as there was not enough slack chain the barrel of the winch was pulled round the handle and struck him.

COWELL George - 1879 - 17/01/1879 – Age 57 – Pikeman. Parkhead Furnace, Phillips and Co., Dudley, Worcester Fall of timber and loose gob caused by a bump. The bar of the setting stuck him down and the falling roof smothered him before he could be removed.

CRABB John (injured) - 1871 - 16/12/1871 - Miner. Cat Hall, Baxenden, Lancashire. The men were engaged in driving down a drift, and in doing the work it is necessary to blast the roof. The men had drilled the hole and put in some gunpowder, and were ramming the charge home when by some means the shot fired. Crabb's left hand is so badly injured that the first finger had to be amputated which was performed by Dr. Russell, who is attending both men. His eyes are also injured and his face burnt. Birch, is still much more injured, the front portion of his head was laid open, and had to be stitched together, and it is feared he will lose his sight, the chest is also injured. Both men are lying at Mr. Grimshaw' beerhouse, Chapel street where they lodged. The men had copper protection for the rammers (to reduce sparks) but whether they were in use at the time is another question. Probably, the iron came into contact with the roof, and struck a spark which caused the explosion. (Accrington Times). 2 injured.

The coal appeared so sound in this instance that one of the workmen was engaged at the time of the accident drilling a hole for a shot in the block which fell and killed Craddock.

The portion of workings situated beyond a fault became foul in consequence of the space for the passage of air being too small and ignition was caused by a shot which blew out the stemming. 27 killed.

CRAVEN William - 1871 – 13/05/1871 – Age 53 - Hewer. Montagu Main, Thomas Benson, Newcastle, Northumberland. Fell down shaft from Low Main.

CRAWFORD D. - 1875 – 16/09/1875 – Age 24 – Sinker. Blantyre, William Dixon Ltd., Blantyre, Lanarkshire. The deceased, along with another man, was engaged shanking No 3 pit, now in course of sinking at the above works. While removing a wooden water tank, the tackle by which it was being hoisted broke when on a level with the surface, and the tank, with Crawford in it, was precipitated to the bottom of the shaft, between 50 and 60 fathoms deep, falling into 10 fathoms of water. Assistance was procured, but when the unfortunate man was brought to the surface life was of course quite extinct. [Scotsman 17 September 1875]

CUNNINGHAME Francis - 1875 - 26/02/1875 - Age 23 - Collier. Dalharco No.2, Dalmellington Iron Co., Patna. Suffocated by gasses whist engaged putting out an underground fire. 3 killed.

CUNNINGHAME Thomas - 1874 - 24/10/1874 – Age 50 – Fireman. Cuttlehill, Henderson Wallace and Co., Dunfermline, Fife. A loose stone fell which he and another were endeavouring to get down (stoop and room).

CUPPLES Alexander - 1874 - 07/12/1874 – Age 16 - Collier. Bartonholme, Eglington Iron Co., Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Fall of roof.

CURLE J. - 1875 - 27/10/1875 – Age 27 – Sinker. Millfield, Patent Shaft and Axel Co., Wednesbury, Stafford. While dong repairs in the pumping pit the end of the gudgeon in pumping beam struck walling of the pit and broke the brickwork a piece of which fell down the shaft and struck him. Killed on the spot.

CURRANS James - 1870 - 13/08/1870 – Age 50 - Miner. Tigethaugh (ironstone), William Baird and Co., Denny, Stirling. Fall of roof.

CURRIE Duncan - 1877 - 02/11/1877 – Age 44 – Sinker. Barbauchlaw, James Wood, Bathgate, Linlithgow. Suffocated by choke damp in a sinking pit which had gone down on an old waste.

CURRIE James - 1878 - 06/11/1878 – Age 21 - Collier. Over, Dalserf William Barr and Sons, Dalserf, Fife. Fall of roof at stooping while drawing props from a lift which was worked off. 2 killed.

CURRY Joseph - 1879 - 09/12/1879 – Age 35 - Collier. Wooley, Joseph Pease and Partners, Crook, Durham. Crushed between tubs. On taking an empty tub away from the flat he neglected to sprag those he had left when they ran amain and caught him.
